Sundiata: an Epic of Old Mali was written by D.T. Niane and translated by G.C. Pickett. D.T.
Niane was a historian who received this version of Sundiata s epic from Djeli Mamoudou
KouyatГ©, a griot. In fact, there is not a true author for this epic due to the fact that it has been
transmitted orally for many years. This epic justly showed the type of culture Africa had at the time
taken place and has defined the type of people who use to reside there. Sundiata: an Epic of Old
Mali withholds many themes, but only some of importance: the transmission of the epic, politics,
religion, and destiny.
It can be argued that the orality of Sundiata versus the written translation is an important theme of
the epic of old Mali. This story has been translated several times into several different languages.
The epic of Sundiata originated as an oral epic performance that was performed by various African
griots or bards. It was a challenge translating the oral tradition into written form. Thus concluded
that orality is a better form of transmission than writing. Transmitting oral passages into writing can
be easily falsified. Oral communication is more unquestioning than writing. Interesting enough, the
griots are important persons who transmitted Sundiata: an Epic of Old Mali through many lineages.
Griots were not only historical orators, but they were also important political figures.

Chinese culture is largely surrounded by the idea of balance. We see this in Yin and Yang, and a
balance between light and dark, or tall and short. While the Americanized version of this concept
is the difference between the two, the original concept looks at how yin and yang balance each
other and work together. This idea of balance is integrated in the idea of the five seasons and the
elements that represent those seasons. The five elements are also related to Taoism in many ways.

When we two parted/ In silence and tears (1 2). The tone is immediately set as being sorrowful

Abstract
China s economy is growing ever larger, but is that enough to get the Chinese Renminbi (more
commonly known as Yuan) to be accepted as a global market currency? This paper will look into
the liberalization, but with Chinese characteristics, of five determining factors in becoming a
country whose currency is a global reserve currency. These factors are as follows: economic size,
macroeconomic policies, flexible exchange rates, financial market development, and finally having
dollar. In 2005, China announced the move stating it was a move towards allowing the Yuan to
eventually float freely. However, China still maintained intense government control by abandoning
its peg to the U.S. dollar and simply moving it to link with a handful of other world currencies
(Schuman, 2012).
So while this step may have paved the way towards a floating currency, it was s step taken that
also kept in place a way for tight government control and regulation. Then, in 2008 to help curb the
effects of the global financial crisis, China s economy once again pegged it s currency to the U.S.
dollar. Since, China has removed that peg and in 2010 again announced to the world that is was
committed to resuming reforms of the Yuan exchange rate and increasing currency flexibility
(China Daily, 2010).
It seems that with flexible exchange rates in China, it feels like two steps forward, one step
backwards. While they are indeed moving toward a floating exchange rate, it is a slow going
process filled with exhaustive government control and regulation.

For the movie assignment in this class I felt it was best to pick a film that I was very familiar
with. After careful consideration of a few of my personal favorite movies I choses the film Django
Unchained. I chose this film because of how the elements of it line up with this assignment in a

good beating bad.
To properly understand this movie it is important to first list the characters by good and bad roles.
In the good rules were characters such as Django and Dr. King Schultz. In the bad roles were

2.6 Second order nonlinear optical measurements
Powder second harmonic generating (SHG) measurements of polycrystalline material 2 were
performed using a modified Kurtz NLO system using 1064 nm radiation [33]. A DAWA Q
switched Nd:YAG laser, operating at 20 Hz, was used for the measurements. Because the SHG
efficiency has been shown to depend strongly on the particle size, polycrystalline samples were
ground and sieved (Newark Wire Cloth Co.) into distinct particle size ranges (20 45, 45 63, 63 75,
75 90, 90 125, 125 150, 150 200, 200 250, 250 Ојm). To make relevant comparisons with the
known SHG materials, crystalline О± SiO2 and LiNbO3 were also ground and sieved into the
same particle size ranges. Powders with the particle size in the range 45 63 Вµm were used for
comparing the SHG intensities. All the powder samples with different particle sizes were placed
in separate capillary tubes. No index matching fluid was used in any of the experiments. The SHG
light, i.e., 532 nm green light, was collected in reflection and detected using a photomultiplier tube
(Hamamatsu). To detect only the SHG light, a 532 nm narrow pass interference filter was attached
to the tube. A digital oscilloscope (Tektronix TDS1032) was used to view the SHG signal. A
detailed description of the equipment and the methodology used has been published [34].
