Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a gram-positive bacteria that produces crystal proteins during sporulation. These crystal proteins, also known as delta endotoxins, have insecticidal properties. There are over 80 subspecies of Bt identified based on flagellum antigens and other characteristics. Bt was first isolated in 1901 in Japan as the cause of silkworm disease. It was later used commercially as a pesticide starting in the 1920s. The crystal proteins are encoded by cry genes, which are located on plasmids in most Bt strains. These cry genes have been classified into different groups based on amino acid sequences and insect target ranges. The crystal proteins are activated in the insect midg
