4. Existing Products Research
ā¢ The Archers
The audio drama follows the fictional stories of multiple families in the town
of Ambridge. The show is the longest running radio soap-opera, having aired
18,700 episodes since 1951 on BBC Radio 4. The show has multiple rural
themes as the show follows farmers, and was initially intended to be a show
about everyday country folk; but morphed into a rural based drama. The
show runs for 12 minutes each episode, with each episode garnering five
million listeners, with one million listeners on the internet.
5. Existing Products Research
ā¢ Doctor Who
The audio drama is a spin-off to the popular BBC show Doctor Who, about
some alien who travels in time with his blue time machine. The drama carries
over the same dramatic beats as the show, with a one-dimensional villain
ultimately being defeated by the titular āDoctorā. The TV show has been
running since 1963 and has had many audio adaptations, this being one of
many with the one of many Doctors in it. It primarily appeals to a wide age
range, from early teenagers to essentially the elderly, as well as both genders;
as one of the main aspects of the brand being its wide appeal due to it
catering to many demographics in different ways ā action/adventure appeals
to teenage boys etc.

8. Idea Generation/Initial Reaction
ā¢ I want to create an audio drama that has
comedic and horror elements, centred around
four people in a cathedral. The timeline jumps
a couple times, making this a non-linear
narrative. The timeline jumps from the
characters being interrogated by the police in
the present and to the cathedral in the past.
9. Proposal
Working Title: St Peterās Ghost
What is it called? This can change if you think of something better later
Audience:
Who is your audience? Be very detailed; age, gender, social status, psychographic etc. Use the
Audience Classifications PowerPoint on Blackboard to help you develop this section.
Why would your project appeal to this person? Discuss each audience element in relation to
content (why would your product appeal to the age group? Why would your product appeal to
the gender? Etc.)
Project Concept (approx. 200 words)
What is the concept for your project and what are you going to make?
What research did you need to conduct and how will it help you make your project?
10. Proposal
Working Title:
St Peterās Ghost
Audience:
15-30 year old boys. My show appeals to this demographic because it includes language theyād
enjoy, with some of it verging on vulgar or crass; thereās also some lad-like banter throughout as
the characters are constantly making jokes out of each otherās expenses.
Project Concept (approx. 200 words)
Iām going to make a comedy, verging slightly on horror, radio short about some friends
investigating a ghost in St Peterās cathedral. The concept came about whilst I was researching
ghosts for the project and came across one called the Cocklane Ghost, who supposedly lurks
around St Peterās Cathedral in London.

18. Daily Reflection Day 1
ā¢ I started listening to radio/audio dramas to get
an understanding to how they work, I listened
to the archers and some of the recommended
Doctor Who one. I also researched ghosts and
ghost stories, as I have to make a ghost story.
After researching I started and finished my
script for the project, with it involving one of
the ghosts I researched.
19. Daily Reflection Day 2
ā¢ I recorded 95% of the character dialogue,
which took about an hour, I recorded in two
locations ā a stairwell and another closed off
stairwell. I have just started to put the audio
clips into premiere.
20. Daily Reflection Day 3
ā¢ I finished putting all the dialogue audio clips
together, which took a while due to me sifting
through a load of outtakes and bad takes. I
also finished putting all the sound effects into
my project and layering them so that they fit
nicely.
21. Daily Reflection Day 4
ā¢ I fully finished editing the project and now Iām
finishing any other little things that need
doing, like he evaluation.

24. Research
ā¢ Radio/Audio dramas are a purely acoustic performance, meaning there is
no visual stimulus, the only narrative information is given through sound.
ā¢ Ghost stories often include ghost content, ghosts being the supposed
ethereal representation of a dead person's soul, in media there are either
good ghosts or bad ghosts ā most horror properties have bad ghosts.
25. Planning
ā¢ To record the chair sound effect Iām going to pull out a chair on a hard
floor, as carpet wouldnāt work due to the fact that carpet wouldnāt be in a
police interrogation room, plus it wont make much of a noise. I will put the
recorder close to the chair, so that it picks up the sound.
ā¢ To record the phone ringing Iām going to put the recorder close to a phone
record it as I call the phone.
ā¢ To record the far away foot steps Iām going to position the recorder a
distance away from someone walking on a hard floor, again because police
station corridors donāt have carpet, not that Iād know, and because carpet
wouldnāt make a good enough sound.
ā¢ To record the requisite door sound effects Iām going to put the recorder
close to the door and record it opening and closing/locking.
26. Planning
ā¢ To record the struggling sound effect Iām going to position the recorder
and record me and another person scuffing about on the floor with our
feet, whilst making groaning sound effects. This is to convey the guys tying
someone up and dragging him to the confession booth.
ā¢ To record the muffled screams I'm going to smother my face with
something, likely a T-shirt, and record myself screaming into it.
ā¢ To record the loud crash of a chair being thrown I'm going to gather some
refuse that will get me the sound I want, and position the recorder close
to me throwing said refuse as hard as I can on the floor.
27. Time Management
I managed my time pretty well, however I had to rush some of the recording
because they were taking too long, due to insecurity in my actors and me
forgetting to record certain lines. Rushing was a common theme throughout
my work on this project as I kept running out of time, likely due to me missing
a day because of illness. I feel like a positive of my project was that everything
was finished in time, however the rushing and annoyance of recording
bogged the experience down.
Next time I would make sure my actors are properly prepared, meaning they
know what theyāre going to say and do. I feel this would be a plus because it
would cut down on time, so that Iād have more time to make it and save on
the stress of recording.
28. Technical Qualities
I feel like my projects technical quality is quite good as the recording quality is quite
nice, and everything was layered well in editing, as nothing overlapped. To avoid
overlap with the dialogue and background diegetic sounds I simply lowered certain
audio volumes to a point to where itās low enough, but detectable. I feel like a negative
was with some of the recordings having some external noise, like my friends, who were
helping me, laughing in the corner of the room. The other recordings were done one-
on-one in a closed off room and the recordings came out a lot better.
Next time I would carry on with the concept of recording one-on-one in a closed-off
environment, as it yields better results and cuts down on the grievances of recording
with additional problems.
29. Aural Qualities
I would say my projectās aural quality is quite good, a majority of the narrative takes
place in a cathedral, so the voices are quite echoed. I accomplished this by doing a lot
of the recording in a stairwell, which if you didn't know, have a lot of echoes. This adds
to my project because it links to the story and adds depth to the recording.
I wouldnāt necessarily say there were any negatives with my projectās aural quality as
it fits with the story. I used sound effects to aid my projects aural quality, like diegetic
city sounds and such but werenāt included in the recording of the dialogue, perhaps
next time I could include such pre-thoughts.
30. Audience Appeal
My projects target demographic was older children, like teenagers and young adults,
15-30. I used the Line of Appeal comedy and humour to appeal to this demographic,
with the project having jokes throughout it. I feel like my project was successful in
appealing to my demographic, I kind of used primary research, as I showed my project
to my sixteen-year-old friend and he really liked it and found it funny.
I feel a certain negative of my project could be some of the content matter, an
argument could be made that some of the content is too adult for the younger side of
my target demographic, however I wouldnāt overly be concerned about it. For next time
Iāve been advised to be less controversial with my script, just so its PG.
