7. Mood Board Analysis
How does your mood board inspire your project?
• My mood board includes a lot of screenshots of candid footage, some of which is actual
reality, whilst some are fictional but presented as reality. Considering the fact that I want to
create a ‘mockumentary’ style of video journalism, this inspires me in the way that they give
me an idea of the elements that go into making something like this.
• There’s certain uses of colour within my mood board that I want to incorporate into my video
in certain ways, for one of the scenes I’m thinking of tinting the video red to signify the
violence of the scene. This is similar to the image in my mood board as it was similarly used
in the movie to communicate violence. I may also switch between colour tones so signify a
change, for example cutting from an industrialised area, full of grey, to the forest, which is
colourful.
How will your mood board influence your final product?
• I will use the examples and their visuals to create a video in a similar style and genre to them,
using a ‘mockumentary’ style crossed with video journalism with semi-scripted parts.
• I intend to use some of the locations that are in my mood board, specifically the forest, as a
part of the narrative is the presenter going into the woods.
8. Key Influences
• Video Journalism/Documentary
• The type of video journalism and documentary film making I enjoy
the most are ones made by creators like Michael Moore, Chris
Tordoff (Francis ‘Viper’ Higgins). Most of which feature candid
footage and depictions of real life, with certain parts being played
up for laughs.
• As for what elements from these examples I want to incorporate in
to my final project, I would say the technical qualities of having
narration/over dub of information over relative footage. For
example, Michael Moore will have a script of information that he
will say and record, but he has it play over footage of things that
relate to what he’s talking about, like if he’s talking about people
buying guns and he wants to explore and present that as being
gratuitous, he will show candid footage of people with excessive
amounts of guns/paraphernalia, normally cut with them saying
something conventionally out of touch and biased. Essentially
choosing how to represent one side of a group or thing with visual
and audible information, to build up an image/idea in the viewers
mind.
9. Key Influences
• Trailer Park Boys/Mockumentary
• Trailer Park Boys is a Canadian comedy-mockumentary series
following the day to day misadventures and failed success stories
of three friends in a trailer park. The show is a key influence to
this project as it was the first of many comedy style
mockumentaries that introduced me to the genre, other notable
examples being: ‘This is Spinal Tap’, ‘Hardy Bucks’ and ‘The Office’.
• I like this particular genre of film making due to the cinema verite
aspect of it, cinema verite being a type of film making
characterised by a realistic, documentary style, where in a way
the camera becomes one of the characters and it is made aware
that the characters know they are being filmed. This is different to
fourth wall breaking in the way that it is established in the film’s
reality that someone is actually filming the events as they’re
happening, as opposed to breaking the fourth wall, where the
character/characters know they’re in a piece of fiction.
10. Key Influences
• Dark Comedies/Evil Dead 2
• Dark comedies are characterised by a type of humour that often
makes fun of taboo or discomforting topics, like murder/death,
mental health, war and such, essentially juxtaposing and contrasting
the tonally dark and light.
• Popular examples of the genre being: Breaking Bad, American
Psycho, Fight Club, Hot Fuzz and mainly Evil Dead 2.
• I will take influence from Evil Dead 2, and other dark comedies, with
it’s use of over the top, humorous violence, and style of comedy. The
film’s plot is also similar to my premise which is convenient for me as
it can give me ideas on possible options for what happens in my
narrative that I can take influence from.
• It also informs the tone that I’m going for, as I want to include
elements like gratuitous over the top violence and include subdued
subtext on industrialisation, but I don’t want to darken the tone and
end up creating a drama. I plan to avoid this by undercutting these
dark elements with humour, again, juxtaposing the dark with the
light.
