ā¢ Price of Fear ā Specialty of the House
ā¢ None Diegetic: strings music at start, jump scare sound
ā¢ Voiceover: A man speaking about how he likes food and adding some context
ā¢ Dialogue: talking bout a restaurant called spearows
ā¢ Narrator: deep voice
ā¢ Diegetic Sound: walking, train honking, cars in background, motor way sounds,
people in the background with faint murmuring (gives the impression f a crowded
room).
ā¢ I really like how the audio fades from voiceover with no other background sounds
to diegetic sounds of a street and dialogue, it creates a sense of prolonged
juxtaposition that really stands out quite nicely.
4. Existing Products Research
ā¢ Haunted House Soundscape
ā¢ None Diegetic: unsettling drrr deea suspense sound effect, raggid distortion soud
ā¢ Diegetic Sound: crows, thunder, rain, walking on stone surface, door opening, knocking on
door, door slowly opening, lights turning on, wooden boxes being moved, wind, bells
ā¢ Soundscape: someone moving around in a house, you can tell the weather is rainy
ā¢ The sounds come in one after another, which really helps draw the focus to each one of
them. The is a sense of movement.
ā¢ The use of windy and bell sounds is quite unsettling when compared to the silence it is
encompassed by.
ā¢ The rain stopping also helps to further explore the sounds that are being played by creating a
sudden silent atmosphere that allows them to stand out more.
ā¢ The video starts the slowly turn rom very diegetic sounds to a lot of no diegetic suspenseful
music and sounds.

5. Existing Products Research
ā¢ Doctor Who
ā¢ It has suspenseful piano music at the beginning, with the actor for the doctor
speaking in a sudden tone with large breaks in between.
ā¢ The actors for bar and is mum are also good, as they have the right accents and
express the desired emptions well.
ā¢ The speaking has reverb so it sounds like its been filmed in a room.
ā¢ The sound of a gas canister being opened is followed by a spraying sound
ā¢ One of the characters voice starts to echo and crack to indicate some sort of timey
wimey stuff is happening.
ā¢ The is a bit of slight music behind what they say.
ā¢ The doctor goes from seemingly aggravated calm, to speaking in a way that incites
fear.
ā¢ The doctor has a speech that incites fear, going through all his tittles.
8. Idea Generation/Initial Reaction
My initial thoughts regarding the set brief is that this could be a fun chance to try and
experiment with telling a story without visuals, by either a form of narration or by
using pure audio.
The difficult aspects of this project will be knowing what sounds I should use and
when, because the are so many different sounds I could make, but I wont necessarily
know how to make them or use them.
Sound Project
The story
The
Characters
The Tone
The Non-Diegetic Sounds -music

9. Idea Generation/Initial Reaction
Ideas for sounds:
Walking crunch on stones or walking on dirt
Scraping wood
Eeriness of birds and nature, natural but quite sounds
Heavy breathing
Backpack sounds
Starts off seeming peaceful with sounds of a guy being on a walk, then start to slowly
here other footsteps that are quite or something and suspense non diegetic sounds
slowly creeping in, till the guy is running, the music becomes very suspenseful and the
nature sounds start to sound more sinister. The image in my head for the sound is
currently a walk that turns from day to dark with themes of red, and keep getting
quicker
11. Foley
Foley sounds: I created the zombie sounds by growling and making generic zombie
sounds myself and using parametric equalizer sound effect to make them sound
distant,, I also created a bit of a sound I used with ne of them by recording
squishing sound from me itching my eye.
I created a neck scratch sound by simply scratching my neck.
I created a gate scratching on ground sound by scratching my nails across carpet.
I created the fridge opening sound by kicking a wall, and created the fridge sounds
by recording the sound of an electric window opening.
I created a yawn sound and ouch sound by recording my own voice.
I created the wind sounds by blowing air near the mic and adding a parametric
equalizer effect onto it to make it sound distant and less human like, while also
massively decreasing its original audio levels.

12. Recording
I recorded my audio in quite a few locations:
Tesco ā was very noisy with lots of people, but was beneficial for the fridge
sounds which I ended up not using.
College bus stop: recorded stomping sounds on stone there, but students are
way louder than most people and kept on walking by and talking real loud,
plus the motorway was right next t that spot
The studio: was very quite and had a lot of things which I used to make
sounds e.g. carpet, walls, desks, chairs.
13. Garage Band
On garage band I discovered an array of interesting sounds and tunes that I
was able to utilise to make some interesting effects. I learned the basics of
the software and got to experiment with some of the different instruments
and cords. The output of my trial and error was a pretty coo suspense rising
lightspeed sound effect. The sound was made by pressing four keys in a row
progressively to build the rise, and then let them go and add a more out of
sink cord to break it.

14. Proposal
Working Title:
The ghostly, hunted, ghost hunter.
Audience:
Who is your audience? age: 13-40, gender: not specific, Social status: working wage family
It will have male and female characters, and since men and women are both into horror it will be
aimed at both, and also other genders. The age range will appeal as it is a story that will be more
modern and also by scary, but not too scary, as to why it is 13 and up and why 40 is the upper
end (cause generally older folks are not as good with modern ideas). It would be a free YouTube
type horror story, so it would be ideal for middle class families.
Project Concept (approx. 200 words)
My concept is to make a ghost story based around three guys in a ghost hunting team who are
looking for ghosts and have a lot of humours conversations. The main character is going to have a
tragic backstory where he has experienced trauma, i.e. maybe losing his family when he was
younger in an accident. I also plan to have some sort of backstory or explanation for the ghosts
and why they continue to haunt the living. Since It will be set in an abandoned school, maybe the
children where all just scared so that is why they where there, maybe the teacher would be
protective and the one who was doing all of the evil stuff and controlling ghosts. The could also
be a demon in it who was the cause of the main characters trauma as a child.
16. Story
Boy sees his house burn down, his whole family inside. He is an individual
that attracts ghosts, heād so far only met friendly ghosts, but a demon or bad
ghost comes and tricks him into letting out out,, and it kills his family, still out
there. Next part the boy is grown up and is a ghost hunter and uses that story
as an opener (unclear if it was real or not), but a real one, followed by an over
eccentric camera man who knows him well and an alcoholic bum, who seems
selfish but actually values his friends above all else. Both of them do not
believe in ghosts, however MC has seen them all his life, cuts to a story of
them hunting ghosts, inspirational and stuff, says I am coming for you, demon
name at end.
Story will be a scary atmosphere in an abandoned preschool, have scary
childrenās music start playing at one point, camera man is cared, bum who is a
bit drunk is just tired and not all that scared, make it funny a bit, but also
tense, mc tells them to get stuff like sulphur an draw a pentagram, ghosts are
just children laughing and them moving around corridor (swipe sounds, laugh
form different directions. They summon/trap the child's ghost, h asks it about
the demon and then it gives some inf, but then the are more children's
ghosts, and cliff hanger.
17. Script Draft
Say title name, and vol 1
Fire sounds and maybe some screams leading into it, deep breathing in panic at what
he sees, sounds of outside
Mc as child: mumā¦ dadā¦ gran granā¦

Con Opening monologue: I lost everyone that day, my mother, father and
grandmother who I had lived with for all my life, consumed in an instant by an hellish
inferno of my own making. The demon who's name was burned deep into my soul,

Con: GREAT WORK DAVE, NOW I HAVE TO SAY ALL THIS SH*T AGAIN! (angry)
Dave: sorry... (depressed lifeless)
Camera man: Its ok Con (Constantine), we can voiceover your backstory in post
production, lets just get this over with, this place gives me the creepsā¦
Con sighs and says (still a little irritated): Fine, but Dave's better keep his mouth shut,
Iāve only agreed to this cause heās your cousin.
Camera man: Dave shut your trap.
Dave: yes
Silence and them walking down corridor and breathing and maybe a bit cold sound,
they stop

children, crying out for help in their final moments to their mothers and fathers. Join
us as we venture into the unknown and search for the school spirit .
Camera Man: And thatās a take
Con: right lets move onto the next shot

Con is using a detection machine that is making ghost detection type sounds,
It suddenly becomes more alert, signalling the presences of a ghost, they stop
Con: weāve got a presence
Con: Dave pass me the chalk
Dave ruffles through bag and stops once or twice, then hands him chalk, hear the

Hear him pressing buttons and camera noises
CM: 3, 2, 1 and rolling
Con: spiritus adsint et astra formis tuis revela (Latin for: spirits be present and reveal
your astral forms)ā¦ timeo meam fortitudinem (fear my strength)
Silences then sounds of spirit being summoned, laughs and giggles
Dave: whoaaa
Camera Man: Cons the real deal
Con: oh poor soul, trapped in this horrible place, forgive us for summoning you, we
offer our prayers to you, and may you move on peacefully to the afterlife
Ghost child laughs in a happy niece way that then becomes sinister
Con: oh crap
Con: DAVE, SAM, RUN! ITāS A CLASS 4
They run, sound of cameras being fried and ant after theyāve stopped in kitchen
Con: we should be safe in here
Dave: what was that?
Con: a class 4 spirit, and a powerful one at that.
Sam: CONSATATINE, MY CAMERAS!
CON: theyāre completely fried, aint no chance weāre getting them back
Sam: Ugh!
Hear multiple children singing and it getting louder slightly
Dave: uhm, guys. How many children where killed here again?
Con: ohhhā¦ crapā¦
18. Script Final (proof read)
Aware By Charlie Stevens:
Imagine you're in your room all alone...
You are sat down on your recliner unable to move.
The Time: 2:34 am.
The rain is pouring down at an ungodly pace.
You can hear the wind as it blows through your open window.
Then you hear itā¦ the sound off metalā¦ it starts off quietlyā¦ louder.
Louder! LOUDER!
Then, it stopsā¦
It is currently 2:35 am. What sort of lunatic would be delivering mail at
such a time?
It matters not. You take a deep breath and exhale to clam yourself. You
close your eyes and try to get back to sleep.
1..2ā¦3ā¦4ā¦5ā¦6ā¦7ā¦ā¦..
You open your eyes expecting to see the morning rays of sun shine
gleaming through you window, instead all you see is darkness.
Weirdly enough you lap is turned off.
Having left it on before you went to sleep you come to the conclusion
that the lightbulb must have blown.
You sit there listening to the rythm of your breathing taking comfort in
the silence of it all.
(Breathing and scare by ghost breath)
What.. What is this? Your breathing seems to have gotten quicker. Youā¦
Iā¦ We are not alone.
Poem bit in reverse ghost sound.

24. Daily Reflection Day 1
ā¢ Today I started recording my sounds, It went
well and I have gotten what I wanted by using
Garage band and what I have.
25. Daily Reflection Day 2
ā¢ Realised that I do not like my Project. Still
going to try and use some of the effects I
made, but am currently rewriting it.
26. Daily Reflection Day 3
ā¢ Have rewritten script and recorded new
speaking lines. Also started the editing.
27. Daily Reflection Day 4
ā¢ Did most of the editing yesterday. Put on the
finishing touches and am waiting to upload it
in a bit.
29. Research
ā¢ My research about demon names and all of that became useless in the
end. My research on how to use audition to create certain audio effects
worked, as I was able to create a few unique effects and also use the
denoise feature to make my speaking lines more clear. Over all, I think I
shouldāve done more research on how to build tension, as my piece does
not give enough of it, in my opinion.
30. Planning
My original planning was quite good, however I changed my story completely,
so that became useless. I think my second plan worked well though, as I
wrote it out on the script thoroughly and got all the sounds I wanted in a
somewhat similar way that I envisioned it in my head. My planning was a bit
open, which is fine for me who like to improvise a few bitts, however this may
cause me to waste unnecessary time by leaving such openings, which can
lead to a more overall poor product that is less structurally sound.
31. Time Management
ā¢ My time management was less than great, as I left myself few days to
actually finish my new project idea. I shouldāve been more decisive on
what I wanted, and managed my time accordingly. Next time I would have
my plan decisively chosen and break down how much time I think I will
need,, then add some contingency.
32. Technical Qualities
My work is petty good in my opinion, however when compared to other
narration, it lacks. The mic is more ruffled than other pieces I heard, and the
sound is a bit random in some cases, which can lead to confusion. My piece has
some quite nice sounding despite this. I was able to utilize the Denoise technique
quite well, to get rid of a lot of background noise form speaking parts. I was also
able to use garage band quite well when creating sound effects. I also used echo,
reverse and other effects on my piece. I recorded quite a bit of foley on my phone
and used my pcās microphone to record speaking parts and a few other sound
effects. A foley method I used was recording the mini collectable trolly slam the
back bit as the letterbox sound.
33. Aural Qualities
I think it sounds good. In terms of creativity, it was not quite to the scale of my
original plan, but I settled on a much simpler story as it was easier to execute
properly. I particularly like the garage band sounds as they are quite nice
sounding, was well as my ghost sound bit at the end. I would improve my mic
quality by adding on the sound reducer, as I had lost it at the time of making
and found it after it had already bee submitted. This would have made the mic
quality much better.
I would say that its strengths are being easy to understand and sounding nice.
I would say its weaknesses are having some sounds that maybe should have
been changed and having some muffled bits when speaking.
34. Audience Appeal
Simple to understand. Waking up at night and feeling scared. I have
appealed by making use of funky and interesting sounds generated by
garage band. I have appealed by also making it seem calm but deadly.

Go over as many slides as necessary. Research at least 3 products.
Discuss the use of sound effects, music and performance. How have the producers suggested a location/time period and created a tone/feel
Try to break down what you can hear. How do the different sound elements work together? How do sound effects add to the drama? What part does music play in the work?
Try to listen to a variety of different types of radio programme. If you listen to drama and documentary, you will give yourself a better understanding of what exists and what is possible. It will also help guide your project.
