Josh Palmer
Story
• A serial killer has kidnapped a child. The child is tied up to a
chair and the killer is talking to the child. Firstly the killer is
talking to the child and he is saying that he will do things
like cutting him up and chopping his ears off.
• Secondly the killer will get knifes and torture weapons out
to try and scare the kid.
• Thirdly you can hear shouting from other kids that are
trying to save the child and then the killer goes out the
door
• Fourthly you then hear 4 gunshots and the killer comes
back in the room and says that they have been sorted out.
• Finally you hear a massive bang and the video ends.

– In this video you are in a interrogation room and they
use 3d audio (holophonic sound) to make it sound like
you are actually in the room with the people speaking.
They use two mics and pqan the audio to give a 3d
effect. They use foley to get the SFX to sound so real.
It has no music but it is still scary because it sounds so
real. It has a 3 characters in it and they all have a
distinct voice. They use a binoric dummy mic to record
it. The use of SFX and dialog is major in this. If it is not
done right you would not know what is going on.

– There are plenty of sound effects in this show. There are sound effects when
something is happening for example when the person gets up you can hear his
metal bottle banging against another and then you hear footsteps to confirm
that he has got up. There is also a part where you can hear some sort of gas or
water being sprayed. At this part there are a few more sfx that occur. It is like a
trance of mumbling.
– The music sets the whole mood. For example at the start the music sounds
quite mysterious and at the end the music gets really loud and powerful. It
shows that the guy speaking is in charge.
– You can tell this is set in the 1900s as the voices sound really old and it seeks
like it is recorded on an old recorder.
– The whole feel to this is that it is mysterious at the beginning then it starts to
get scary by the end. I am guessing middle aged people would enjoy things
like this.

– Analysis
– The sfx are used for tense moments and context to the
narration.
– The music was really mysterious when talking about the mirror
which led to the audience imagining what it could be. But when
we found out what the mirror was the music got louser and the
faster. This created a intensity to the audience. You could tell
this was old fashioned by the word the narrator was using. He
was using words like finery and quilts to describe clothes.
– The whole tones of the story was quite mysterious. Until the
end it got really tense. At the very end however you started to
feel sorry for the girl.

Working Title:
8th street killer
What is it called? This can change if you think of something better later
Audience:
Who is your audience? Be very detailed; age, gender, social status, psychographic etc. Use the
Audience Classifications PowerPoint on Blackboard to help you develop this section.
Why would your project appeal to this person? Discuss each audience element in relation to
content (why would your product appeal to the age group? Why would your product appeal to
the gender? Etc.) My target audience is aged 15 – 25. it is mostly students as they are more
aware of these types of audio than everyone else. The target gender is male as they normally like
to listen to more action/horror things over females. Any class can listen to this as long as they
have a pair of earphones and access to youtube. There social class I am targeting would be
middle class as this is just the average person. As long you have access to YouTube then you can
listen. The pycographic that I am targeting is belongers as they are just the average person. My
story is uk based and they are normally patriotic towards their country.

Sound Effects
Sound Effect Needed How I Will Create the Sound
Creaky door I will find a creaky door and shut it and
open it until I get the right sound.
Creaky floor I will find a creaky floor or door and keep
stepping/ closing the door and opening it
to find the perfect sound for a creaky
floor.
Rain I will shake a bush to make it sound like
heavy rain and then I will add it all
together to make it longer.
Foot steps I will simply record my own footsteps. I
will make some louder and some quieter. I
will also pick up the pace of the footsteps
and slow them down, in case I need a
different pace.
Knife slash (Sharpening on metal) Scraping my phone against a metal bar.
Throat cut I will get this online and make sure it is
royalty free as I don’t know how to create
a sound that sounds like a throat being
cut.

Daily Reflection Day 1
• Log your thoughts and feeling related to what you have
produced. Discuss methods and tools you have used.
Reference everything you have done today. Use
screenshots
– Today went really well. Firstly I started to record the audio clips
and SFX. Firstly I recorded all the sound effects I planned on
using because I could not record my dialog first as not all of my
cast was ready. After I then recorded all of the dialog from my
cast using a hand held device. I had no where really sound proof
so we had to do it in an open area, this turned out well though
as it sounded more realistic and not too studio based. After
putting the audio files onto the computer I put them into
premier pro, chose the ones that worked and cut them up to
make them fit in with how I want to edit it.
Daily Reflection Day 2
• Today went really well. I gathered the online
sound effects that I could not make myself. I
then placed them all into premier and fit them
in where I wanted them. I then started to cut a
few of them down to fit them in with the
dialog. I did this by using the razor tool.
Daily Reflection Day 3
• Today I finished the rest of the cutting down
of all of my dialog and sound effects and got
onto making them work together. I dragged
the clips on the timeline and made there be
some timed pauses that would help with the
overall effect of the audio story. I also faded
my clips so the audio would flow a lot better
with the story and that there wont audio cut
off points.
Daily Reflection Day 4
• Today I added a backing sound effect. Thunder.
This helped me a lot as I felt like the audio story
needed something in the background to make it
seem a lot more realistic. I trimmed the thunder
at some points, using the razor tool, to make it
sound better with the story. I used the audio gain
tool to increase/decrease the audio levels at
some points. I then made the finishing touches to
the story to make sure everything flowed the way
I wanted it to.
Evaluation
Research
• What were the strengths of your research?
– There were plenty of strengths of my research. One of them was that I got a chance to
look at how the professionals did it and how and where they used sound effects. This
helped me know where to use sound effects and realise that if I don’t use them right the
whole thing wont make sense or feel as scary.
– Another strength would be that the other stories gave me an idea on what to do my
story on. I was initially going to do a torture chamber but then I quickly realised that it
would just be boring and I should have an actual story.
How did your research help your product?
– My research helped my product because it helped me to figure out a good structure of
my story. I realised that to keep is mysterious at the start was quite common so I wanted
to make it different and start off with the information, then go to the mysterious part,
then the plot and then the ending.
There were not a lot of weaknesses during my research apart from the fact that I only
looked at one gengre and time period dramas. I looked at 1900s based horrors. I could have
looked at different types of storys such as modern love storys to see how they have done it
different. I doubt this would have had much of an effect but I could have done different plot
points. I didn’t know how to do a love plot point as well as I could have I didn’t research it.
Planning
• A strength of my planning would be that it helped me decide what I was going
to do for my final product and how I was going to make my story. Planning
helped me know what SFX I was going to be using and how I was going to be
using them. I planned out all of the things I needed for my product in advance.
This made things a lot quicker and easier, it gave me more time on actually
editing the audio to make it sound really good.
• There was a weakness in my planning which was that some of the foley sound
effects that I initially planned on doing did not work as I planned. I needed to
find a creaky door, however there were no doors that creeked around college
so I had to get one online and it took me a good 15 minutes to find the right
one as a lot of them didn’t sound right. I should have thought it out more in
depth. I also had the same problem with my footsteps and floor creek SFX.
This wasted about 1 hour of production time that really could have helped me
improve my overall product by giving more time to edit. To improve my
planning I would have thought it out more and think of a different way to
make these SFX.
Time Management
• I think that I manged my time of producing the actual product ok but I
could have don’t a lot better. I managed to get my product in on time
however I reckon I think I could have improved if I had more time. If I had
more time I would have improved the overall flow of the audio story by
shortening/increasing the timing on things like the placement of the clips
and the timing in-between them I would have also done this to the fades
and the audio gains to make sure I got the best out of it. I would have also
made the overall story better. If I had more planning time I would have
thought out some more plot points to make the story a lot more
interesting.
Technical Qualities

They started off with old
fashioned music so you new
instantly that it was old. This
worked well as for horror
stories older are really scary.
In this it was a
narration throughout
the whole thing with
only a few lines of
dialog when needed.
There was a lot of music in
the back ground to set the
scene.
My story starts off with
dialog and introduces you
with the ‘bad guy’ straight
away.
You don’t actually
hear the bad guy.
The whole thunder
effect in the background
worked really well with
the dialog. I made a gap
of dialog at the end
when everything was all
silent and then I put
some thunder in. this
made the audience feel
tense as they didn’t
know what had
happened to sam.
I faded a lot of
my dialog so it
fit in with
everything. It
made it flow
really well.
The majority of my SFX were
foley. The best one I used was
the rain SFX. I shuck a bush and
it sounded exactly like rain.
My audio was
recorded on a
handheld device.
I feel like my story could have been more detailed because after
actually making the story I realised that some of the SFX didn’t
work and there could have been time where other SFX could
have been done.
Aural Qualities
I think that my audio sounds really good. The use of sound effects could have been improved if
I made more using foley, chosen the right ones to fit the scene and if I had a few more in.
However some of the sound effect that I did use worked really well. The knife slash and the
rain in particular worked really well to set the scene. The knife slash and the dialog together
really set the scene and instantly told the audience that the kid was in danger and potentially
about to get hurt. The rain sound effect, using a bush to make it, worked well because rain I a
sign of sadness and this was used when all the characters were found dead. I could say the
same thing about the thunder, it is associated with danger and I used it when all the kids were
in danger.
I feel like in this I went a little bit too creative so it made me forget all about the actual story
line. I was thinking too much on how the sound effects worked together I feel like I forgot
about how the dialog did too. I could improve by making more dialog clips to fit in the middle
to maybe explain more context about the murderer.
I feel like I could have added some actual music in as well to set the scene even more. This
would have worked well when the kids were planning on saving their friend.
Audience Appeal
Was for 15 – 25 year olds because
it was really scary and it had a lot
of murder in it. Any younger I
don’t think they could of handled
it.
I feel like these are the only two
things that actually appeal to my
target audience. I didn’t really do
anything that appealing to my
audience.
Most my characters where English
so this would appeal to belongers.

  • 2. Story • A serial killer has kidnapped a child. The child is tied up to a chair and the killer is talking to the child. Firstly the killer is talking to the child and he is saying that he will do things like cutting him up and chopping his ears off. • Secondly the killer will get knifes and torture weapons out to try and scare the kid. • Thirdly you can hear shouting from other kids that are trying to save the child and then the killer goes out the door • Fourthly you then hear 4 gunshots and the killer comes back in the room and says that they have been sorted out. • Finally you hear a massive bang and the video ends.

Existing Products Research • Show Name Here – Analysis https://youtu.be/u163wC6mP2A – In this video you are in a interrogation room and they use 3d audio (holophonic sound) to make it sound like you are actually in the room with the people speaking. They use two mics and pqan the audio to give a 3d effect. They use foley to get the SFX to sound so real. It has no music but it is still scary because it sounds so real. It has a 3 characters in it and they all have a distinct voice. They use a binoric dummy mic to record it. The use of SFX and dialog is major in this. If it is not done right you would not know what is going on.
  • 4. Existing Products Research • doctor who – Analysis https://youtu.be/ZA50biqUB-8 – There are plenty of sound effects in this show. There are sound effects when something is happening for example when the person gets up you can hear his metal bottle banging against another and then you hear footsteps to confirm that he has got up. There is also a part where you can hear some sort of gas or water being sprayed. At this part there are a few more sfx that occur. It is like a trance of mumbling. – The music sets the whole mood. For example at the start the music sounds quite mysterious and at the end the music gets really loud and powerful. It shows that the guy speaking is in charge. – You can tell this is set in the 1900s as the voices sound really old and it seeks like it is recorded on an old recorder. – The whole feel to this is that it is mysterious at the beginning then it starts to get scary by the end. I am guessing middle aged people would enjoy things like this.

Existing Products Research • The Mirror - Horror Audio Story https://youtu.be/6zcstz- Dq0c – Analysis – The sfx are used for tense moments and context to the narration. – The music was really mysterious when talking about the mirror which led to the audience imagining what it could be. But when we found out what the mirror was the music got louser and the faster. This created a intensity to the audience. You could tell this was old fashioned by the word the narrator was using. He was using words like finery and quilts to describe clothes. – The whole tones of the story was quite mysterious. Until the end it got really tense. At the very end however you started to feel sorry for the girl.

  • 9. Proposal Working Title: 8th street killer What is it called? This can change if you think of something better later Audience: Who is your audience? Be very detailed; age, gender, social status, psychographic etc. Use the Audience Classifications PowerPoint on Blackboard to help you develop this section. Why would your project appeal to this person? Discuss each audience element in relation to content (why would your product appeal to the age group? Why would your product appeal to the gender? Etc.) My target audience is aged 15 – 25. it is mostly students as they are more aware of these types of audio than everyone else. The target gender is male as they normally like to listen to more action/horror things over females. Any class can listen to this as long as they have a pair of earphones and access to youtube. There social class I am targeting would be middle class as this is just the average person. As long you have access to YouTube then you can listen. The pycographic that I am targeting is belongers as they are just the average person. My story is uk based and they are normally patriotic towards their country.   • 11. Sound Effects Sound Effect Needed How I Will Create the Sound Creaky door I will find a creaky door and shut it and open it until I get the right sound. Creaky floor I will find a creaky floor or door and keep stepping/ closing the door and opening it to find the perfect sound for a creaky floor. Rain I will shake a bush to make it sound like heavy rain and then I will add it all together to make it longer. Foot steps I will simply record my own footsteps. I will make some louder and some quieter. I will also pick up the pace of the footsteps and slow them down, in case I need a different pace. Knife slash (Sharpening on metal) Scraping my phone against a metal bar. Throat cut I will get this online and make sure it is royalty free as I don’t know how to create a sound that sounds like a throat being cut.

  • 14. Daily Reflection Day 1 • Log your thoughts and feeling related to what you have produced. Discuss methods and tools you have used. Reference everything you have done today. Use screenshots – Today went really well. Firstly I started to record the audio clips and SFX. Firstly I recorded all the sound effects I planned on using because I could not record my dialog first as not all of my cast was ready. After I then recorded all of the dialog from my cast using a hand held device. I had no where really sound proof so we had to do it in an open area, this turned out well though as it sounded more realistic and not too studio based. After putting the audio files onto the computer I put them into premier pro, chose the ones that worked and cut them up to make them fit in with how I want to edit it.
  • 15. Daily Reflection Day 2 • Today went really well. I gathered the online sound effects that I could not make myself. I then placed them all into premier and fit them in where I wanted them. I then started to cut a few of them down to fit them in with the dialog. I did this by using the razor tool.
  • 16. Daily Reflection Day 3 • Today I finished the rest of the cutting down of all of my dialog and sound effects and got onto making them work together. I dragged the clips on the timeline and made there be some timed pauses that would help with the overall effect of the audio story. I also faded my clips so the audio would flow a lot better with the story and that there wont audio cut off points.
  • 17. Daily Reflection Day 4 • Today I added a backing sound effect. Thunder. This helped me a lot as I felt like the audio story needed something in the background to make it seem a lot more realistic. I trimmed the thunder at some points, using the razor tool, to make it sound better with the story. I used the audio gain tool to increase/decrease the audio levels at some points. I then made the finishing touches to the story to make sure everything flowed the way I wanted it to.
  • 19. Research • What were the strengths of your research? – There were plenty of strengths of my research. One of them was that I got a chance to look at how the professionals did it and how and where they used sound effects. This helped me know where to use sound effects and realise that if I don’t use them right the whole thing wont make sense or feel as scary. – Another strength would be that the other stories gave me an idea on what to do my story on. I was initially going to do a torture chamber but then I quickly realised that it would just be boring and I should have an actual story. How did your research help your product? – My research helped my product because it helped me to figure out a good structure of my story. I realised that to keep is mysterious at the start was quite common so I wanted to make it different and start off with the information, then go to the mysterious part, then the plot and then the ending. There were not a lot of weaknesses during my research apart from the fact that I only looked at one gengre and time period dramas. I looked at 1900s based horrors. I could have looked at different types of storys such as modern love storys to see how they have done it different. I doubt this would have had much of an effect but I could have done different plot points. I didn’t know how to do a love plot point as well as I could have I didn’t research it.
  • 20. Planning • A strength of my planning would be that it helped me decide what I was going to do for my final product and how I was going to make my story. Planning helped me know what SFX I was going to be using and how I was going to be using them. I planned out all of the things I needed for my product in advance. This made things a lot quicker and easier, it gave me more time on actually editing the audio to make it sound really good. • There was a weakness in my planning which was that some of the foley sound effects that I initially planned on doing did not work as I planned. I needed to find a creaky door, however there were no doors that creeked around college so I had to get one online and it took me a good 15 minutes to find the right one as a lot of them didn’t sound right. I should have thought it out more in depth. I also had the same problem with my footsteps and floor creek SFX. This wasted about 1 hour of production time that really could have helped me improve my overall product by giving more time to edit. To improve my planning I would have thought it out more and think of a different way to make these SFX.
  • 21. Time Management • I think that I manged my time of producing the actual product ok but I could have don’t a lot better. I managed to get my product in on time however I reckon I think I could have improved if I had more time. If I had more time I would have improved the overall flow of the audio story by shortening/increasing the timing on things like the placement of the clips and the timing in-between them I would have also done this to the fades and the audio gains to make sure I got the best out of it. I would have also made the overall story better. If I had more planning time I would have thought out some more plot points to make the story a lot more interesting.
  • 22. Technical Qualities https://youtu.be/6zcstz-Dq0c They started off with old fashioned music so you new instantly that it was old. This worked well as for horror stories older are really scary. In this it was a narration throughout the whole thing with only a few lines of dialog when needed. There was a lot of music in the back ground to set the scene. My story starts off with dialog and introduces you with the ‘bad guy’ straight away. You don’t actually hear the bad guy. The whole thunder effect in the background worked really well with the dialog. I made a gap of dialog at the end when everything was all silent and then I put some thunder in. this made the audience feel tense as they didn’t know what had happened to sam. I faded a lot of my dialog so it fit in with everything. It made it flow really well. The majority of my SFX were foley. The best one I used was the rain SFX. I shuck a bush and it sounded exactly like rain. My audio was recorded on a handheld device. I feel like my story could have been more detailed because after actually making the story I realised that some of the SFX didn’t work and there could have been time where other SFX could have been done.
  • 23. Aural Qualities I think that my audio sounds really good. The use of sound effects could have been improved if I made more using foley, chosen the right ones to fit the scene and if I had a few more in. However some of the sound effect that I did use worked really well. The knife slash and the rain in particular worked really well to set the scene. The knife slash and the dialog together really set the scene and instantly told the audience that the kid was in danger and potentially about to get hurt. The rain sound effect, using a bush to make it, worked well because rain I a sign of sadness and this was used when all the characters were found dead. I could say the same thing about the thunder, it is associated with danger and I used it when all the kids were in danger. I feel like in this I went a little bit too creative so it made me forget all about the actual story line. I was thinking too much on how the sound effects worked together I feel like I forgot about how the dialog did too. I could improve by making more dialog clips to fit in the middle to maybe explain more context about the murderer. I feel like I could have added some actual music in as well to set the scene even more. This would have worked well when the kids were planning on saving their friend.
  • 24. Audience Appeal Was for 15 – 25 year olds because it was really scary and it had a lot of murder in it. Any younger I don’t think they could of handled it. I feel like these are the only two things that actually appeal to my target audience. I didn’t really do anything that appealing to my audience. Most my characters where English so this would appeal to belongers.
