Pre-Production
Matthew Burniston
Pre-production• What are you making?
– The concept for my product is a British crime drama, appealing to a predominately male audience, with
mature content – hopefully cover the mental state of criminals such as serial killers; as well as things like
depression and anxiety. I'll be working in three mediums – a short sequence, a title sequence and a poster
for the overall product – which would be a series broadcast weekly on TV. By including a sequence before
the title sequence – showcasing a murder, it will fit into the crime and drama section – as murder is a crime
and the way I'll be shooting all this is for the effect of drama, with the title sequence causing suspense as it
cuts its way into the end of scene, leaving the audience to think. In both my title sequence and poster, I'll be
using the expression's and poses of the main character/characters to help convey the emotions of the
episodes (-e.g. the drama,) whilst also using gritty and realistic colours to convey the lower and more serios
tones that would be seen throughout the series. If broadcast, this would be aired on late night BBC 1 –
fitting into the BBC drama department style – like such hits as - “Luther” and “Bodyguard.” It would also be
aired of a several weeks period, on a series on Saturday nights – at 54 minutes, per episode (so my audience
won’t be done after a full week of work and I’ll have their attention, whilst having them aired weekly will
allow for a week's whole suspense and waiting for the last episode to be resolved...)
• Why?
– Through this year (both in and out of college) I’ve seen the progression of my skills and confidence – in
things such as filming, prior to this year I hadn’t actually filmed anything and though I started of quite week
in things such as my Irn-Bru project, I saw some progression in my music video – which will play into my title
sequence and pre-title sequence; my photoshop skills – with the addition in things like - “Refine Edges” and
the - “Lasso Tool,” to efficiently cut around things; and I’ve finally learnt how to use the basics in Premier. I
want to work in these three mediums as I take interest in them – I very much like making posters in
photoshop, as demonstrated in my own time; I want to create the pre-title sequence in the hope of
developing my skills further as that’s something I’d like to do when I’m older – directing – especially a crime
drama; and I’d like to do a title sequence as I love seeing title sequence with the blended and well-crafted
imagery and I’d really have a go at go this – not to mention being able to compare this year’s to last year's
standard of work – by recreating and comparing last year's work – e.g. a poster and title sequence for a
crime series.
Reflection:
Pre-production• Who is it for?
– Male: Because stereotypically men are more drawn to violence and action than women my product will
appeal more to then in the sense this will be a more action driven crime drama – fitting more into the horror
and thriller genres. On top of this, from my surveys, I discovered that the majority of my audience were male
than any of the other genders.
– Primary Age – 16 to 20: This age demographic was mostly picked up from the questionnaires I did – being
the most picked age out of all the age groups. On top of this, because both the primary and secondary age
groups – it'll allow me to make my product for a mature-er audience, being able to cover more serios theme
and more frightening elements
– Secondary Age – 25+: This age demographic was mostly picked up from the questionnaires I did – being the
second most picked age range.
– Belonger: Being a tv series, this will apply for an audience that will constantly be tuning in to watch the
series as it goes on and it's also possible it could pick up and appeal further to a small cult following that
tunes in weekly?
– Middle Class: As a lot of the characters and cast in this production will fit into this class – thus adding a
relatability factor into my product.
• Where will it appear/on what?
– My main product (the title sequence and pre-title sequence – as part of what would be the series) will
appear on the BBC as BBC drama; with the poster being a different medium that doesn't go on TV, so it'll
appear in places like bus shelters and busses – with the intention of pulling them into my actual product.
Reflection:
Pre-production – Location Hunting:
Whilst searching for a bypass or something on the lines of a bypass (-
for the main location for that would featured in the pre-title sequence
scene and in the background for the poster,) I found what I'd consider
the ideal location outside The University Of York...
The reason for me choosing this location as it plays into the
expectation of dogy events taking place in things such as ally ways and
underpasses – whilst also having a lot of friends who are willing to
help out on campus – making this an easy set to get to for my cast and
crew (-e.g. my friends...)
Pre-production – Poster Planning:
As I'm going to have my leading protagonist to pose
against the underpass for my poster – I looked into
some differnet posses I could do? -

Pre-production – Colour:
Because I'm attempting to create a BBC drama I'll be
sampling/mimicking a colour grade of an official BBC
product I feel fits.
Based on Luther, this will be the color grading and
scheme I'll be following in the pre-title sequence -
and a loosely modified one in my poster? The
clours used in this is made up of a lot of beiges
with some uses of greens and oranges – whilst
also using a spectrum of tones – although avoiding
whites to often be replaced with a range of
bieges...
In my experiments, I really like the colour and style of
this poster I tested on. The colours are made up of
range of faded purples – used in the shadows; with the
use of lime green in the lighter tones. Unlike the colour
grade I took from Luther the tones and colours in this
piece will consist of more faded tones, with the
aplicance of stronger pulls of colour in things like
shadows and highlights.
Pre-production – Style Sheet:
Link:
https://www.dafont.com/adlinnaka.font
This will be the font I will be using this font for the
logo of my product – fitting in will a lot of other
BBC drama logo that I'd researched on Google
images. A lot of logo are simplistic enough to work
in just a singular colour (such as black or white)
and often being left as quit plain (less abstract) -
however very readable.
Link:
https://www.dafont.com/ace-sans.font
As I want my logo to stand out, I want to use a less bold font to help
make my logo stand out more from all the other text – as I will be
planning to use other text through my production.

Contingency Planning
Potential Issue Solution
People may drop out, fall ill or just might not
just show up – whether they're an actor or part
of the crew.
It's always a good idea to have backups for the
cast – especially when a lot of the characters I'll
be using in my piece are replicable. On top of
this, it's also a good idea to ask people in
advance and who'd be willing to participate.
I might not have enough space on my
camera to film.
Make sure the SD card is clear – before I use it
and take what footage I can off the card on to a
computer or laptop when I can.
I could loose footage or files because of
corrupted files or by accident.
Ensure that files are saved to a safe place –
at all times, whilst also making sure to have
a back up copy also saved somewhere
safe.
My camera doesn't have a good
enough aperture to film in the dark.
To avoid such an issue, it could
be recommendable to film to film on greyish
day, then add additional effects to the colour
grade to make it appear like night – but also
take some potential reference photos to
support this.
Health and Safety
Potential Issue How will the issue be
avoided?
There could be glass on the floor when the cast
member need to pretend to be the dead corpse
of their former character.
To prevent this hazard, constantly check the
for dangers – especially when a cast
members need to lie on the floor and if a
must – absolutely ensure the floor is
cleared to a safe standard
Someone could trip over and injure themselves
or twist their ankle.
Bring a first aid kit onto set and keep an eye out
for uneven ground to warn people.
When walking backwards with the camera, I
can't see where I'm going – which could lead to
injury.
Have extras keep an eye on where you're
walking and call out for you when there's a
potential hazard or someone's walking towards
me as I am – I will also wear a hivis-jacket to
warn people.

Pre-Production Crime Drama

  • 2. Pre-production• What are you making? – The concept for my product is a British crime drama, appealing to a predominately male audience, with mature content – hopefully cover the mental state of criminals such as serial killers; as well as things like depression and anxiety. I'll be working in three mediums – a short sequence, a title sequence and a poster for the overall product – which would be a series broadcast weekly on TV. By including a sequence before the title sequence – showcasing a murder, it will fit into the crime and drama section – as murder is a crime and the way I'll be shooting all this is for the effect of drama, with the title sequence causing suspense as it cuts its way into the end of scene, leaving the audience to think. In both my title sequence and poster, I'll be using the expression's and poses of the main character/characters to help convey the emotions of the episodes (-e.g. the drama,) whilst also using gritty and realistic colours to convey the lower and more serios tones that would be seen throughout the series. If broadcast, this would be aired on late night BBC 1 – fitting into the BBC drama department style – like such hits as - “Luther” and “Bodyguard.” It would also be aired of a several weeks period, on a series on Saturday nights – at 54 minutes, per episode (so my audience won’t be done after a full week of work and I’ll have their attention, whilst having them aired weekly will allow for a week's whole suspense and waiting for the last episode to be resolved...) • Why? – Through this year (both in and out of college) I’ve seen the progression of my skills and confidence – in things such as filming, prior to this year I hadn’t actually filmed anything and though I started of quite week in things such as my Irn-Bru project, I saw some progression in my music video – which will play into my title sequence and pre-title sequence; my photoshop skills – with the addition in things like - “Refine Edges” and the - “Lasso Tool,” to efficiently cut around things; and I’ve finally learnt how to use the basics in Premier. I want to work in these three mediums as I take interest in them – I very much like making posters in photoshop, as demonstrated in my own time; I want to create the pre-title sequence in the hope of developing my skills further as that’s something I’d like to do when I’m older – directing – especially a crime drama; and I’d like to do a title sequence as I love seeing title sequence with the blended and well-crafted imagery and I’d really have a go at go this – not to mention being able to compare this year’s to last year's standard of work – by recreating and comparing last year's work – e.g. a poster and title sequence for a crime series. Reflection:
  • 3. Pre-production• Who is it for? – Male: Because stereotypically men are more drawn to violence and action than women my product will appeal more to then in the sense this will be a more action driven crime drama – fitting more into the horror and thriller genres. On top of this, from my surveys, I discovered that the majority of my audience were male than any of the other genders. – Primary Age – 16 to 20: This age demographic was mostly picked up from the questionnaires I did – being the most picked age out of all the age groups. On top of this, because both the primary and secondary age groups – it'll allow me to make my product for a mature-er audience, being able to cover more serios theme and more frightening elements – Secondary Age – 25+: This age demographic was mostly picked up from the questionnaires I did – being the second most picked age range. – Belonger: Being a tv series, this will apply for an audience that will constantly be tuning in to watch the series as it goes on and it's also possible it could pick up and appeal further to a small cult following that tunes in weekly? – Middle Class: As a lot of the characters and cast in this production will fit into this class – thus adding a relatability factor into my product. • Where will it appear/on what? – My main product (the title sequence and pre-title sequence – as part of what would be the series) will appear on the BBC as BBC drama; with the poster being a different medium that doesn't go on TV, so it'll appear in places like bus shelters and busses – with the intention of pulling them into my actual product. Reflection:
  • 4. Pre-production – Location Hunting: Whilst searching for a bypass or something on the lines of a bypass (- for the main location for that would featured in the pre-title sequence scene and in the background for the poster,) I found what I'd consider the ideal location outside The University Of York... The reason for me choosing this location as it plays into the expectation of dogy events taking place in things such as ally ways and underpasses – whilst also having a lot of friends who are willing to help out on campus – making this an easy set to get to for my cast and crew (-e.g. my friends...)
  • 5. Pre-production – Poster Planning: As I'm going to have my leading protagonist to pose against the underpass for my poster – I looked into some differnet posses I could do? -
  • 7. Pre-production – Scene Story Boarding: Shot length: 00:01:00 Shot type: Panning - mid shot. Screen time: 00:00:05 Action: People will be walking past the other end of the bypass – establishing the location more – leading into the frame wipe out with somebody walking by. (This shot will also fade in and frame wipe out.) Shot length: 00:01:00 Shot type: Panning - wide shot. Screen time: 00:00:04 Action: This will be a still shot foreshadowing the scene of the crime, whilst further establishing the location – as cars and busses can be seen passing. (This shot will frame wipe in, with the rest being regular cuts until stated otherwise...) Shot length: 00:00:20 Shot type: Mid shot. Screen time: 00:00:08 Action: This is the first half of the victim/female character walking towards the underpass – with a very slight look of discomfort on her face...

  • 9. Pre-production – Scene Story Boarding: Shot length: 00:00:03 Shot type: Close up shot. Screen time: 00:00:03 Action: The phone is rinning in her hand – revealing an unkown number's calling her and cauising to think about answering the phone or not – eventually swiping and picking up the phone. Shot length: 00:00:03 Shot type: Close up shot. Screen time: 00:00:04 Action: The camera focsuses on the woman's eyes taking up both a confused and concerned look on it – staring at her phone. Shot length: 00:05:00 Shot type: Mid Shot. Screen time: 00:07:00 Action: From a distance a woman can be seen talking on the phone, with a quick adjustment in focus revealing a dark figure with a knife- r.
  • 10. Pre-production – Scene Story Boarding: Shot length: (However long the lines are.) Shot type: Mid shot. Screen time: 00:00:05 Action: The woman is still talking on the phone (talking the given lines,) beofore quickly ending the call and continuing to walk again.) • 13. Pre-production – Scene Location: This is a colour quardinated map of my films shoot – in which will later be applied to my shot list to show where the filming will take place. For my shot list I will be taking taking the shots from my story boards and oder them acorrding to the block I'll be filming in and when within that. • 14. Pre-production – Colour: Because I'm attempting to create a BBC drama I'll be sampling/mimicking a colour grade of an official BBC product I feel fits. Based on Luther, this will be the color grading and scheme I'll be following in the pre-title sequence - and a loosely modified one in my poster? The clours used in this is made up of a lot of beiges with some uses of greens and oranges – whilst also using a spectrum of tones – although avoiding whites to often be replaced with a range of bieges... In my experiments, I really like the colour and style of this poster I tested on. The colours are made up of range of faded purples – used in the shadows; with the use of lime green in the lighter tones. Unlike the colour grade I took from Luther the tones and colours in this piece will consist of more faded tones, with the aplicance of stronger pulls of colour in things like shadows and highlights.
  • 15. Pre-production – Style Sheet: Link: https://www.dafont.com/adlinnaka.font This will be the font I will be using this font for the logo of my product – fitting in will a lot of other BBC drama logo that I'd researched on Google images. A lot of logo are simplistic enough to work in just a singular colour (such as black or white) and often being left as quit plain (less abstract) - however very readable. Link: https://www.dafont.com/ace-sans.font As I want my logo to stand out, I want to use a less bold font to help make my logo stand out more from all the other text – as I will be planning to use other text through my production.

  • 18. Contingency Planning Potential Issue Solution People may drop out, fall ill or just might not just show up – whether they're an actor or part of the crew. It's always a good idea to have backups for the cast – especially when a lot of the characters I'll be using in my piece are replicable. On top of this, it's also a good idea to ask people in advance and who'd be willing to participate. I might not have enough space on my camera to film. Make sure the SD card is clear – before I use it and take what footage I can off the card on to a computer or laptop when I can. I could loose footage or files because of corrupted files or by accident. Ensure that files are saved to a safe place – at all times, whilst also making sure to have a back up copy also saved somewhere safe. My camera doesn't have a good enough aperture to film in the dark. To avoid such an issue, it could be recommendable to film to film on greyish day, then add additional effects to the colour grade to make it appear like night – but also take some potential reference photos to support this.
  • 19. Health and Safety Potential Issue How will the issue be avoided? There could be glass on the floor when the cast member need to pretend to be the dead corpse of their former character. To prevent this hazard, constantly check the for dangers – especially when a cast members need to lie on the floor and if a must – absolutely ensure the floor is cleared to a safe standard Someone could trip over and injure themselves or twist their ankle. Bring a first aid kit onto set and keep an eye out for uneven ground to warn people. When walking backwards with the camera, I can't see where I'm going – which could lead to injury. Have extras keep an eye on where you're walking and call out for you when there's a potential hazard or someone's walking towards me as I am – I will also wear a hivis-jacket to warn people.
  • 20. Production Schedule Day/Lesson Tasks Friday (03/05/19) • Late Night – Film-Shoot • Late Night – Photo-Shoot (In preparation for the following the weeks – in production.) Tuesday (07/05/19) • Select my favourite picture out of those taken. • Create a Logo for my product (which will both be applied in the poster and title sequence.) • Piece together the poster from the selected picture and logo – with applied editing of colours and lighting effects. Wednesday – Friday (08/05/19 - 10/05/19) • I'll edit together the footage for my pre-title sequence together with music and additional audio if needed? • I will apply the intended colour grade to my product and additional effects (such as the frame wipe.) • I will also be using the studio to film character parts for my title sequence.
