3. Existing Products Research
• Sport commentary
– They have music on in the background but it is
very faint so the audio stays entertaining but you
can still easily hear the people talking which is
most important.
4. Existing Products Research
• A piece of cake
– There are sound effects to accompany were the
actors are and what they're interacting with such
as a cat meowing, doors closing, phone ringing,
and seagulls squawking, this lets the listener
imagine the scene very easily and will make them
feel more involved.
5. Existing Products Research
• Dune
– Most films will add in sound effects after filming,
these can be such examples as walking,
background noise, music or sound effects (for
example the noise of gunshots)
6. Existing Products Research
• Youtubers
– When they add music or sound effects they make
it so the voice can be heard over them or add
them in if there isn’t a voice to hear and so no
obstruction with the vocals.
– The music and sound effects they use will be used
because of the scenario they're in an so can help
immerse the viewer in the experience.
9. Idea Generation/Initial Reaction
I found some urban legends on the internet that
I thought about using, for most of them I didn’t
get a good idea straight away and they wouldn’t
have worked too well for a radio drama but
eventually found Mothman and got an idea that
with the use of Mothman seems like it can work.
10. Idea Generation/Initial Reaction
The initial reaction for Mothman was received
much better as I came up with an idea for a
radio drama including him much easier and
faster than any of the other urban legends
which would have been harder to implement
within a radio drama or something similar to
that.
12. Foley
• Include your work on foley and some writing
about what went well, what could be better
and what you have learned.
• You should include a link and a screen shot.
Don’t embed your work, it won’t work.
13. Shaun of the dead foley
I believe that the audio for the video was quite believable, some parts are worse than others such as when
the character enters the shop, the audio for the fridges and fans/ air conditioning are too loud and you can
sometimes hear a change in audio even though its supposed to be the same noise.
The walking of the character sound okay but does sometimes look out of time with the audio, the running
mans audio could have gone on for longer and if the audio was longer then there should be heavy fades on
both ends of the audio clip.
There probably should have been more background noise like the wind or birds and animals making noise,
with the audio I used, you can only really here the foot steps of the character.
The character looks like he sometimes makes noises like sighing, scratching and yawning, none of which I
included so I should have made and added those noises but made them subtle so they blend in rather than
standing out. I did try and add a police siren to be in the distance and it works quite well but doesn’t really
blend well and probably needed to have more of an echo sound to fit in better.
The noise of the character tripping sound very good in my opinion but when he trips in the store I had to
use the same noise of him tripping outside because I didn’t record one for inside so that didn’t sound right
when he trips in the store.
The noise of the cans being picked out of the fridge was pretty good but its unfortunate that I had to use
multiple clips for the fridge and fan noise when I could have had one long, continuous so it would sound
much more natural, however I did have a heavy fade for the audio of the shop as the character entered
which sounded good. The end of the clip just before it fades to black, I didn’t really add any noise for the
character using the freezer so I should have done that.

14. Recording
• Write about your experiences of recording in
different places.
• What effect did it have? How will this
influence your project?
15. Recording
It was a lot more difficult recording audio than I thought as there was always things
interrupting the recording like people speaking or just unwanted background noises.
It can also be hard to mimic something like walking because it has to be close enough
that it looks normal and fits with what you're watching. However it was fun and
interesting when we found random objects or things that actually ended up sounding
like they fit quite well, such as the part of the clip when the character grabs the gate,
we recorded a plank of wood falling but it fits well with the clip.
When it comes to recording my audio for the radio drama, I will want to use a room
with little to no other sounds so the audio is just what I want it to be, for example I
might want just a voice and no background noise with it.
For other sound effects, I should make a list of what I need and how I could record it
once I have drafted the story for the radio drama, this would be helpful for when I'm
recording so I can just tick off what I need, I should also record the same noise a few
times because one take might sound better than the other /so I have more options.
16. Garage Band
• Include your work with Garage Band, and
some writing about what went well, what
could be better and what you have learned.
• You should include a link and a screen shot.
Don’t embed your work, it won’t work.
17. Garage Band
• I enjoyed using the garage band but didn’t have enough time,
I made something that could possibly be used in my radio
drama that sounded quite scary but again, didn’t have enough
time to make it sound better or more refined.
• I learnt how to use the basics of garage band and create some
music that I was okay with, if I had more time I could have
learnt more tools and added to the music I made.
18. Proposal
Working Title:
”A moth into flame”
Audience:
The audience will probably be around 16 or 18 to 30 or 40 year olds as this is meant to be scary and a younger
or older audience probably wont care much for a horror audio experience. Could be male or female but will
appeal to someone who enjoys stuff like audio books with a theme of horror, I think the product would appeal
to both males and females because there are things both genders like in it.
Project Concept (approx. 200 words)
I'm going to try and make what I believe is a radio drama in the setting of a recording studio and outside at
night. There will be one main character and the Mothman and the Mothman will scare the main character at
the middle and end of the drama. The main character is in disbelief of Mothman until his encounters with him,
the main character has an audience because he does radio stuff and the audience end up making fun of him
for not believing in Mothman and then encountering him.
I learnt about how there are lots of noises that you need to consider when creating audio for something and
understood what an audio drama was and got an understanding of what they're like.
21. Story draft
• Radio guy is on air and talking to his audience about
Mothman, guy says he doesn’t believe in Mothman
• Later that night he's walking home and starts running
home because he is spooked by what might be Mothman,
he pretends it a bird
• Next day later at night, the guys back in the radio booth
and talking to his audience, the audience ask if he saw
Mothman, the man is silent but then says it was a bird
and continues to say Mothman Is fake
• Mothman then attacks the window trying to enter, the
man is scared and panicked, the audience tell him to turn
the light off so he does and then Mothman leaves, the
man breaks down and the audience laugh at the guy
22. story
The main character is some sort of radio guy or podcaster and is in his booth live on air, he
has a live chat with his audience so they can communicate, answer questions or have
debates with him. He begins talking about the Mothman as there is news that the
Mothman as either killed or abducted people, he says its all fake and says that people are
just trying to get money and fame out of this fake creature and claiming that people are
missing because of it.
When he's walking home he thinks he can see a man like figure with wings flapping and
gliding in the dark night sky and so gets scared and runs the rest of the way home,
slamming the door behind him and soon convincing himself that he was making it up in his
head because of what he hear prier to that situation.
The next day he is back in the booth (at work) and is talking about his journey home as it is
winter and its cold so he’s just trying to make conversation with his audience. However one
person asks him if he saw Mothman on the way home as a joke, but this cause the main
character to be silent for a few seconds until passing it off to the audience as just seeing a
bird in the sky then also saying again about how Mothman isn’t real and people are being
stupid for believing in it.
Then Mothman flies into the closed window and starts scratching and trying to get in
because of the light, the main character reacts a lot and the audience tell him to turn the
light off, he does and eventually Mothman flies away, the main character breaks down as
the people make fun of him for his response prier to encounter with Mothman, end.
23. Script Draft
Man is in the radio booth on air, talking about things like weather, news and how people are
doing using the live chat. A member of the audience makes joke and people use the laughing
noise for the live chat, after the man plays the joke off he talks about Mothman and the
disappearances of animals, objects and people.
The man says he doesn’t believe this and people want fame, money and sympathy.
The scene will fade to the man walking home in the dark, Mothman will be there and scaring
him but the man and audience wont know this yet. He will run home in fear but play it off as if it
were a bird and the wind.
The next day he will be back in the radio booth and talk about how its getting darker sooner
outside and that he couldn’t believe how cold and dark it was when he went home last night, an
audience member jokingly asks him if he saw Mothman while walking home. The man is quiet
but eventually plays it off and says “its funny you mention that”, and says it was a bird.
After that he talks about other things trying to get off the topic of Mothman, but then Mothman
attacks the window and tries getting in, the man panics and gets scared, the audience spam the
man to turn the light off, the man eventually does and slowly the Mothman backs off and flies
away, the man breaks down and the audience start laughing at him. Then it slowly fades to
silence.

29. Daily Reflection Day 1
• Recorded the voice audio all in one go and
looking for some sound effects online
30. Daily Reflection Day 2
• Putting the sound effects and voice recordings
together and adding affects to the clips
31. Daily Reflection Day 3
• Nearly finished but need extra recordings and
noises to finish, left room for the last
recordings so just making the rest of the audio
complete
32. Daily Reflection Day 4
• Recorded some extra sound effects and voice
audio that was needed to finish, added the
new bits in and finished editing
34. Research
I researched what radio dramas are and used the example of
“war of the worlds 1938 original broadcast” to influence my
work as they both are set in radio stations but there is more
actual drama in my piece and it is less of the just radio station
setting. My Mothman audio task is mostly a mix of the “war of
the worlds 1938 original broadcast” and another radio drama I
took inspiration from called “A piece of cake” which is basically a
drama but just the audio so you have to imagine what is
happening, which is the same idea I was going for with the
Mothman.
35. Planning
I planned what to say and what noises I needed by making a
script that had all the audio spoken by the main character and all
the sound effects and music in the background, this gave me a
list of what I needed to do and could think about what I could
make myself and what would probably need to be found online,
such as the scream of the Mothman.
36. Time Management
I tried to do all the voice recording and sound effects in one day
so the rest of the time could be spent editing and adding
anything else I needed, I ended up needing to recorded more
last minute so that shouldn’t have happened but apart from
that, I did spend my time well and made it easy to be able to
focus on editing with all the clips I needed.
37. Technical Qualities
Added lots of effects to the audio to make it sound more like
what I was going for, for example making the Mothman
sound like its outside a window and trying to get in through
the window. I could have used a better room as there was
some echo and didn’t sound exactly like a studio room but it
didn’t really make a big impact on the sound.
38. Aural Qualities
I think that I did a okay job at making it possible to imagine
what's happening in the Mothman as I added quite a few
sound effects and made changes to existing sounds to make
them fit what I was going for, however there are some parts
where the voice isn’t that easy to understand but that is
mostly up to me not being good at voice recording and partly
because of the radio affect I put on the voice when the
character is in the studio.
39. Audience Appeal
This is defiantly not for children or older people but
could possibly be enjoyed by teenagers or adults as it is
supposed to be scary or at least unsettling and isn’t that
easy to understand if you're younger or older.

Go over as many slides as necessary. Research at least 3 products.
Discuss the use of sound effects, music and performance. How have the producers suggested a location/time period and created a tone/feel
Try to break down what you can hear. How do the different sound elements work together? How do sound effects add to the drama? What part does music play in the work?
Try to listen to a variety of different types of radio programme. If you listen to drama and documentary, you will give yourself a better understanding of what exists and what is possible. It will also help guide your project.
