• Haunted House Soundscape:
– After listening to this soundscape, you can tell that there was a lot of
planning and research that went into the creation of this soundscape.
It is clear that the producer had a clear idea of what noises created the
eerie effect conveyed in the soundscape. The producer used easily
recognisable sounds to create an easy to follow soundscape as
creaking gates and doors are used to familiarise the audience with
where they are in the story. The use of thunder throughout builds
tension and I believe music is used with distortion to represent the
climax of the horror. There is then a scraping sound effect used as the
character of the soundscape is approached.
Existing Products Research
• Short Cuts – Portals
– They use background music which consists of a single note with a
changing audio level to create a mysterious tone throughout the intro.
A narrator is used in the intro to provide the listeners with a subject
question for the listeners to think about. There is then a use of
dialogue throughout the rest of the video to guide the listeners
through stories of portals and gateways. A lot of unique sounds are
used throughout the audio to further develop the feeling of mystery
through space.
Existing Products Research
• Millennium Falcon
– It is clear that a lot of planning and research went into creating this
audio as a lot of the sounds within it are not sounds you would
experience everyday with the story being in space. The producer
would have needed to be very creative with the ways they create
these sounds to make them seem realistic and how the audience
might imagine they sound like. Music isn’t used in this audio but a lot
of engine noises are used to create the soundscape atmosphere of
being inside a vehicle but there is also a lot of mechanical and digital
beeping to simulate being in a futuristic/alternative universe vehicle.
Existing Products Research
• The Archers – 18/11/21
– Musical intro, probably something played in episodes to familiarise the
audience with the podcast. Uses mainly dialogue throughout the
entire audio, this just guides the listener through the story without
really leaving too much room for imagination. The location is not really
talked about so listeners can still imagine what tat may look like but
the story itself is described in a lot of depth meaning different viewers
cant vary too much away from the story with their own perception of
the story.
Ideas
Idea Generation/Initial Reaction
• I always thought that doing foley would be a good experiment and good
knowledge to have. However, I would have preferred to do foley to a pre-
made video without audio rather than trying to create a story to then tell
through the use of foley.
• After some thinking about ideas for my audio project and some research, I
think I'm going to try a soundscape as I don’t particularly want to have my
voice narrating the entire story or have dialogue in the audio.
Idea Generation/Initial Reaction
• My ideas for a horror soundscape are that I would have a piece of horror
music subtly playing in the background throughout but then I would have
classic horror sounds such as creaking gates and doors as well as thunder
to try and guide the listener through the story. For example, I would have
the character that the story is following go through gates as they're
approaching some sort of building to help the listener imagine where they
are. This would then be followed by a series of footsteps as the character
comes even closer to the building, with a creaking door following this as
the character enters the building. I feel like this will give the listener room
to imagine the house but also give them clear points as to where they are
in this imaginary world they have created when listening to the audio.
Experiments
Foley
• Include your work on foley and some writing
about what went well, what could be better
and what you have learned.
• You should include a link and a screen shot.
Don’t embed your work, it won’t work.
Recording
• Write about your experiences of recording in different places.
• We found that recording was often challenging as we had to try find places
with little to no external noise. With only being able to record in and
around school this proved challenging a you can often hear cars in our
audio recordings.
• What effect did it have? How will this influence your project?
• It didn’t impact our experiments to much, you can only slightly hear the
cars in the final version but its quiet enough to almost sound like wind. In
my final project, I will just need to be patient in looking for the right place
and time to record.

Audience:
Who is your audience? Be very detailed; age, gender, social status, psychographic etc. Use the
Audience Classifications PowerPoint on Blackboard to help you develop this section.
Why would your project appeal to this person? Discuss each audience element in relation to
content (why would your product appeal to the age group? Why would your product appeal to
the gender? Etc.)
Project Concept (approx. 200 words)
What is the concept for your project and what are you going to make?
What did you learning during research that will help you?
Proposal
Working Title:
Abandoned Building Soundscape
Audience:
I think that my target audience will have quite a wide range. I don’t think its too age specific besides younger
people probably below the age of 13 seen as though it’s a horror story. Then maybe older people also may not
want to listen to a horror story so I think the age range is probably going to be like 13-40 years old. My
soundscape will not cost money so its for both the working and middle class. Gender wont have an impact on
my target audience as the soundscape isn’t gender specific.
Project Concept (approx. 200 words)
Character is a ghost hunter and goes to explorer a building deep in the countryside. She’s tipped about
paranormal activity in the building by a fellow resident of the small village. Upon going to investigate the
abounded building, a thunderstorm moves over the small village. Seeking shelter from the rain, the ghost
hunter moves through the yard and into the building. After exploring the building with no sighting of
paranormal activity, a strange noise grows louder from upstairs. In hopes of finding paranormal activity to
report, the ghost hunter makes her way upstairs to investigate when she is greeted by a tall ominous figure.
Bright red flames burst from within the figure as it raises its hand flat in knife like position vibrating so fast the
figure's hand appears as a blur. In single swift jab the ghost explorer falls to the ground lifelessly.
I’ve learned from my experiment that’s I should try to plan locations as finding a quiet location is really
important for getting good audio recordings. If this is not possible, I should adjust the sensitivity of the audio
recording device to the best of my ability to try remove unwanted background noise.
Planning
Story
• Character is a ghost hunter and goes to explorer a building deep in
the countryside. She’s tipped about paranormal activity in the
building by a fellow resident of the small village. Upon going to
investigate the abounded building, a thunderstorm moves over the
small village. Seeking shelter from the rain, the ghost hunter moves
through the yard and into the building. After exploring the building
with no sighting of paranormal activity, a strange noise grows

report, the ghost hunter makes her way upstairs to investigate
when she is greeted by a tall ominous figure. Bright red flames
burst from within the figure as it raises its hand flat in knife like
position vibrating so fast the figure's hand appears as a blur. In
single swift jab the ghost explorer falls to the ground lifelessly.
Script Draft
• Rain and thunder noises introducing the listener into the scene.
• Creaking gate noise to guide the listener towards the abandoned building.
• Mud squelches under characters boot as she approaches the building.
• Creaking door and floor boards as the character enters the building.
• Steps on wooden floor as the character navigates round the building with
an electronic scanner, hoping to find paranormal activity.
• Electric scanner beeping and buzzing.
• Strange noise from upstairs.
• Creaking as the character moves up the stairs towards the strange noise.
• The electrical device beeps faster as the strange noise grows louder.
• A helicopter propeller like buzzing sounds grows louder.
• The strange noise stops for a brief second but the bursts out even louder
with flames behind the figure and a loud vibrating hand.
• The character whimpers/screams.
• A fast wind sounds as the figure ends the characters life in the blink of an
eye.

Production
Daily Reflection Day 1
• Recording on day 1 didn’t go to well as all the Tascam recording devices
were booked from college meaning I had to use my phone to record audio
in and around college. Just outside of college is also quite a busy area with
a busy road and because I was using my phone to record, I was not able to
adjust the sensitivity of the microphone meaning it picked up pretty much
everything around me but it did record the audio in a pretty high quality. I
was able to use the denoiser effect in premiere pro to reduce the
background noise a bit which made the audio sound a lot better due to
the high quality it was recorded in. Although the background noise is still
there, it is a lot quieter than it was before. I created the starting sequence
of my soundscape on day 1 but struggled to create a sound for thunder
that sounded anything close to the real sound so I probably wont include
thunder in my soundscape. Overall, it was quite a successful day and I
think the start of my project sounds better than I imagined.
Daily Reflection Day 2
• On day 2 I recorded the sequence where the character enters the
abandoned building. I did all my recording at home as I learned from day 1
that recording at college with my phone was quite a challenge. This way I
was able to get sounds with little to no background noise meaning the
denoiser effect was able to remove any background noise there may have
been and it resulted in some of my clearest, high quality sounds. I
recorded a creaking door and creaking floorboard using a balloon as I
planned but I found that if I added some water to my hand before
recording, I was able to create different pitches for variation in the
floorboards rather than just repeating the same sound. I also recorded a
metal hinge on the door by using some scrap metal and trying to replicate
the sound of a hinge the best I could by hitting it against the ground, I
thought this sound was actually quite effective in making it sounds like the
character was using a door. I tried to record a metal gate sounds but I
wasn’t able to find anything to use that sounded like a heavy metal gate.
Daily Reflection Day 3
• On day 3 I finished recording everything and finished editing the project
and compiling all my sounds. I think that some of my sounds were really
nice and replicated the sound I was trying to create really well but some
sounds I had to record outside of college on my phone which created a lot
of background noise that can be quite overwhelming at the start. The
editing process was quite simple, I only changed the pitch on some of the
sounds to try make it sound more accurate like the balloon noises I used
to create squeaky floorboards and doors. The rest of the editing was just
putting all the recordings in order and volume matching them, so no
sounds were too loud compared to the others. I finished my project on day
3 as I was unable to think of a sound to create that would replicate the
main character dying by a blade, I decided to just use a heartbeat sound
effect by using some cloth as I found a tutorial of it on YouTube by a foley
artist. I used this heartbeat sound to try show the listener the character
had died.
Evaluation
Research
• I think the research for this project went well as I was able to find out how
foley is created and the preparation that goes into it and how they make
some of the most commonly used sounds. During the research period I
also used this time to look at some foley artists on YouTube which helped
me a lot later on in the project during the production section as I had
researched some of the sounds that I planned to make and use in my
project. I watched YouTube tutorials on how to create a heartbeat sound,
squeaky floorboards and squeaking doors which I used all of these later on
in my project and they came out to be some of my best sounding noises.
Planning
• Overall I think that my planning was pretty good as I knew what sort of
story I wanted to create before starting the production section which
saved me quite a lot of time but I didn’t plan how my story would end, this
meant that on the third day when I eventually got to the end of my story I
didn’t know how to finish it off, I wanted to have the main character die
after finding the villain of the story but I didn’t know how to do this using
just sounds. I think that if I had planned my story out just a little bit better
I would have been able to create a good climax and ending to my story as I
think my beginning and middle of the story is a lot better than the ending
as I planned out the beginning and middle in a lot of depth and knew
exactly what I wanted to do before recording.
Time Management
• I think that my time management was really effective during this project
as I didn’t find myself rushing at any point during the project. I think that if
I had used slightly more time to plan it would have worked out for the
better in hindsight but I didn’t want to not have enough time in
production like I have left myself in previous projects. I would rather have
something close to finished to upload and to be marked than have
something that I wanted to do so much more to and therefore not be
close at all to finishing the project how I wanted to.
Technical Qualities
I think on the technical side of this project it all went pretty smoothly as I was
able to edit the sounds to how I wanted them with ease, and I was able to put
all my recorded sounds together in the order that I wanted them in. However,
I didn’t manage to book an audio recorder from college as I had left it too late
so I did have a technical issue in that I used my phone to record the audio that
I wanted to collect around college, this meant that I had quite a lot of
background noise in my audio recordings as I didn’t have the option to change
the sensitivity of the recording like I would on an audio recorder had I booked
one from college, this meant that the quality of some of my recordings was a
bit worse than some that I did at home.
Aural Qualities
I think that my project sounds of high quality in parts, but some parts have a
lot of background noise in them which I think reduces the overall quality of
the soundscape. I really like the sounds I created using a balloon such as the
floorboards and door hinge as I think they sound really close to how they do
normally. I also like the sound of the fire which I used bubble wrap, wind and
a crisp packet to create. I think that the rain at the start is effective in creating
atmosphere for the darkened mood throughout the soundscape. Overall, I
think that my project sounds pretty good besides the background noise but I
am happy with the project for the most part.
Audience Appeal
I do think that the story I created was quite interesting however I do think
that it may be quite challenging to follow and understand for listeners as they
won't have had any understanding of the project prior to listening to it. This is
something I could work on for my next audio project if I ever end up doing
one, but I did find it quite challenging to create a story using nothing but
sounds that I had created myself. I think that if I were to have used a bit of
narration throughout the story to explain parts of my story, it would have
been a lot easier for the listener to understand.

  • 3. Existing Products Research • Haunted House Soundscape: – After listening to this soundscape, you can tell that there was a lot of planning and research that went into the creation of this soundscape. It is clear that the producer had a clear idea of what noises created the eerie effect conveyed in the soundscape. The producer used easily recognisable sounds to create an easy to follow soundscape as creaking gates and doors are used to familiarise the audience with where they are in the story. The use of thunder throughout builds tension and I believe music is used with distortion to represent the climax of the horror. There is then a scraping sound effect used as the character of the soundscape is approached.
  • 4. Existing Products Research • Short Cuts – Portals – They use background music which consists of a single note with a changing audio level to create a mysterious tone throughout the intro. A narrator is used in the intro to provide the listeners with a subject question for the listeners to think about. There is then a use of dialogue throughout the rest of the video to guide the listeners through stories of portals and gateways. A lot of unique sounds are used throughout the audio to further develop the feeling of mystery through space.
  • 5. Existing Products Research • Millennium Falcon – It is clear that a lot of planning and research went into creating this audio as a lot of the sounds within it are not sounds you would experience everyday with the story being in space. The producer would have needed to be very creative with the ways they create these sounds to make them seem realistic and how the audience might imagine they sound like. Music isn’t used in this audio but a lot of engine noises are used to create the soundscape atmosphere of being inside a vehicle but there is also a lot of mechanical and digital beeping to simulate being in a futuristic/alternative universe vehicle.
  • 6. Existing Products Research • The Archers – 18/11/21 – Musical intro, probably something played in episodes to familiarise the audience with the podcast. Uses mainly dialogue throughout the entire audio, this just guides the listener through the story without really leaving too much room for imagination. The location is not really talked about so listeners can still imagine what tat may look like but the story itself is described in a lot of depth meaning different viewers cant vary too much away from the story with their own perception of the story.
  • 8. Idea Generation/Initial Reaction • I always thought that doing foley would be a good experiment and good knowledge to have. However, I would have preferred to do foley to a pre- made video without audio rather than trying to create a story to then tell through the use of foley. • After some thinking about ideas for my audio project and some research, I think I'm going to try a soundscape as I don’t particularly want to have my voice narrating the entire story or have dialogue in the audio.
  • 9. Idea Generation/Initial Reaction • My ideas for a horror soundscape are that I would have a piece of horror music subtly playing in the background throughout but then I would have classic horror sounds such as creaking gates and doors as well as thunder to try and guide the listener through the story. For example, I would have the character that the story is following go through gates as they're approaching some sort of building to help the listener imagine where they are. This would then be followed by a series of footsteps as the character comes even closer to the building, with a creaking door following this as the character enters the building. I feel like this will give the listener room to imagine the house but also give them clear points as to where they are in this imaginary world they have created when listening to the audio.
  • 11. Foley • Include your work on foley and some writing about what went well, what could be better and what you have learned. • You should include a link and a screen shot. Don’t embed your work, it won’t work. • https://youtu.be/cK9lsP5-zUA
  • 12. Recording • Write about your experiences of recording in different places. • We found that recording was often challenging as we had to try find places with little to no external noise. With only being able to record in and around school this proved challenging a you can often hear cars in our audio recordings. • What effect did it have? How will this influence your project? • It didn’t impact our experiments to much, you can only slightly hear the cars in the final version but its quiet enough to almost sound like wind. In my final project, I will just need to be patient in looking for the right place and time to record.
  • 13. Proposal Working Title: What is it called? This can change if you think of something better later Audience: Who is your audience? Be very detailed; age, gender, social status, psychographic etc. Use the Audience Classifications PowerPoint on Blackboard to help you develop this section. Why would your project appeal to this person? Discuss each audience element in relation to content (why would your product appeal to the age group? Why would your product appeal to the gender? Etc.) Project Concept (approx. 200 words) What is the concept for your project and what are you going to make? What did you learning during research that will help you?
  • 14. Proposal Working Title: Abandoned Building Soundscape Audience: I think that my target audience will have quite a wide range. I don’t think its too age specific besides younger people probably below the age of 13 seen as though it’s a horror story. Then maybe older people also may not want to listen to a horror story so I think the age range is probably going to be like 13-40 years old. My soundscape will not cost money so its for both the working and middle class. Gender wont have an impact on my target audience as the soundscape isn’t gender specific. Project Concept (approx. 200 words) Character is a ghost hunter and goes to explorer a building deep in the countryside. She’s tipped about paranormal activity in the building by a fellow resident of the small village. Upon going to investigate the abounded building, a thunderstorm moves over the small village. Seeking shelter from the rain, the ghost hunter moves through the yard and into the building. After exploring the building with no sighting of paranormal activity, a strange noise grows louder from upstairs. In hopes of finding paranormal activity to report, the ghost hunter makes her way upstairs to investigate when she is greeted by a tall ominous figure. Bright red flames burst from within the figure as it raises its hand flat in knife like position vibrating so fast the figure's hand appears as a blur. In single swift jab the ghost explorer falls to the ground lifelessly. I’ve learned from my experiment that’s I should try to plan locations as finding a quiet location is really important for getting good audio recordings. If this is not possible, I should adjust the sensitivity of the audio recording device to the best of my ability to try remove unwanted background noise.

  • 17. Script Draft • Rain and thunder noises introducing the listener into the scene. • Creaking gate noise to guide the listener towards the abandoned building. • Mud squelches under characters boot as she approaches the building. • Creaking door and floor boards as the character enters the building. • Steps on wooden floor as the character navigates round the building with an electronic scanner, hoping to find paranormal activity. • Electric scanner beeping and buzzing. • Strange noise from upstairs. • Creaking as the character moves up the stairs towards the strange noise. • The electrical device beeps faster as the strange noise grows louder. • A helicopter propeller like buzzing sounds grows louder. • The strange noise stops for a brief second but the bursts out even louder with flames behind the figure and a loud vibrating hand. • The character whimpers/screams. • A fast wind sounds as the figure ends the characters life in the blink of an eye.

  • 23. Daily Reflection Day 1 • Recording on day 1 didn’t go to well as all the Tascam recording devices were booked from college meaning I had to use my phone to record audio in and around college. Just outside of college is also quite a busy area with a busy road and because I was using my phone to record, I was not able to adjust the sensitivity of the microphone meaning it picked up pretty much everything around me but it did record the audio in a pretty high quality. I was able to use the denoiser effect in premiere pro to reduce the background noise a bit which made the audio sound a lot better due to the high quality it was recorded in. Although the background noise is still there, it is a lot quieter than it was before. I created the starting sequence of my soundscape on day 1 but struggled to create a sound for thunder that sounded anything close to the real sound so I probably wont include thunder in my soundscape. Overall, it was quite a successful day and I think the start of my project sounds better than I imagined.
  • 24. Daily Reflection Day 2 • On day 2 I recorded the sequence where the character enters the abandoned building. I did all my recording at home as I learned from day 1 that recording at college with my phone was quite a challenge. This way I was able to get sounds with little to no background noise meaning the denoiser effect was able to remove any background noise there may have been and it resulted in some of my clearest, high quality sounds. I recorded a creaking door and creaking floorboard using a balloon as I planned but I found that if I added some water to my hand before recording, I was able to create different pitches for variation in the floorboards rather than just repeating the same sound. I also recorded a metal hinge on the door by using some scrap metal and trying to replicate the sound of a hinge the best I could by hitting it against the ground, I thought this sound was actually quite effective in making it sounds like the character was using a door. I tried to record a metal gate sounds but I wasn’t able to find anything to use that sounded like a heavy metal gate.
  • 25. Daily Reflection Day 3 • On day 3 I finished recording everything and finished editing the project and compiling all my sounds. I think that some of my sounds were really nice and replicated the sound I was trying to create really well but some sounds I had to record outside of college on my phone which created a lot of background noise that can be quite overwhelming at the start. The editing process was quite simple, I only changed the pitch on some of the sounds to try make it sound more accurate like the balloon noises I used to create squeaky floorboards and doors. The rest of the editing was just putting all the recordings in order and volume matching them, so no sounds were too loud compared to the others. I finished my project on day 3 as I was unable to think of a sound to create that would replicate the main character dying by a blade, I decided to just use a heartbeat sound effect by using some cloth as I found a tutorial of it on YouTube by a foley artist. I used this heartbeat sound to try show the listener the character had died.
  • 27. Research • I think the research for this project went well as I was able to find out how foley is created and the preparation that goes into it and how they make some of the most commonly used sounds. During the research period I also used this time to look at some foley artists on YouTube which helped me a lot later on in the project during the production section as I had researched some of the sounds that I planned to make and use in my project. I watched YouTube tutorials on how to create a heartbeat sound, squeaky floorboards and squeaking doors which I used all of these later on in my project and they came out to be some of my best sounding noises.
  • 28. Planning • Overall I think that my planning was pretty good as I knew what sort of story I wanted to create before starting the production section which saved me quite a lot of time but I didn’t plan how my story would end, this meant that on the third day when I eventually got to the end of my story I didn’t know how to finish it off, I wanted to have the main character die after finding the villain of the story but I didn’t know how to do this using just sounds. I think that if I had planned my story out just a little bit better I would have been able to create a good climax and ending to my story as I think my beginning and middle of the story is a lot better than the ending as I planned out the beginning and middle in a lot of depth and knew exactly what I wanted to do before recording.
  • 29. Time Management • I think that my time management was really effective during this project as I didn’t find myself rushing at any point during the project. I think that if I had used slightly more time to plan it would have worked out for the better in hindsight but I didn’t want to not have enough time in production like I have left myself in previous projects. I would rather have something close to finished to upload and to be marked than have something that I wanted to do so much more to and therefore not be close at all to finishing the project how I wanted to.
  • 30. Technical Qualities I think on the technical side of this project it all went pretty smoothly as I was able to edit the sounds to how I wanted them with ease, and I was able to put all my recorded sounds together in the order that I wanted them in. However, I didn’t manage to book an audio recorder from college as I had left it too late so I did have a technical issue in that I used my phone to record the audio that I wanted to collect around college, this meant that I had quite a lot of background noise in my audio recordings as I didn’t have the option to change the sensitivity of the recording like I would on an audio recorder had I booked one from college, this meant that the quality of some of my recordings was a bit worse than some that I did at home.
  • 31. Aural Qualities I think that my project sounds of high quality in parts, but some parts have a lot of background noise in them which I think reduces the overall quality of the soundscape. I really like the sounds I created using a balloon such as the floorboards and door hinge as I think they sound really close to how they do normally. I also like the sound of the fire which I used bubble wrap, wind and a crisp packet to create. I think that the rain at the start is effective in creating atmosphere for the darkened mood throughout the soundscape. Overall, I think that my project sounds pretty good besides the background noise but I am happy with the project for the most part.
  • 32. Audience Appeal I do think that the story I created was quite interesting however I do think that it may be quite challenging to follow and understand for listeners as they won't have had any understanding of the project prior to listening to it. This is something I could work on for my next audio project if I ever end up doing one, but I did find it quite challenging to create a story using nothing but sounds that I had created myself. I think that if I were to have used a bit of narration throughout the story to explain parts of my story, it would have been a lot easier for the listener to understand.

  1. Go over as many slides as necessary. Research at least 3 products. Discuss the use of sound effects, music and performance. How have the producers suggested a location/time period and created a tone/feel Try to break down what you can hear. How do the different sound elements work together? How do sound effects add to the drama? What part does music play in the work? Try to listen to a variety of different types of radio programme. If you listen to drama and documentary, you will give yourself a better understanding of what exists and what is possible. It will also help guide your project.
