- uses a non-diegetic soundtrack to create an
intense atmosphere.
- sound effects give context to what’s going on.
- dialogue from the characters tells the story.
- The soundtrack gets louder as he gets further into
his speech to represent his power in what he’s
saying.

Ideas
Story
• Follows a band on tour slowly starting to find
it harder to carry on playing.
• Maybe a story a long the lines of bohemian
rhapsody but shortened and a different
ending.
Idea Generation/Initial Reaction
• A band member quits a band because he
doesn’t enjoy it anymore.
• The band go on to write a hit.
• They end up bumping into him in a venue
where they are playing and they end up
inviting him back into the band.
Idea Generation/Initial Reaction
• A fast developing ghost story.
• It would be presented with just speech from
the characters like the show would be so it
feels like you’re there.
• Starts by them being on call with their friend
on the phone.
• They stay at a bnb and throughout the night
they get woken up and they have to try and
escape.
Proposal
Working Title:
Locked
Audience: I think that my audience would be very broad because it could be anyone from the
age of 15-30 because it wouldn’t be the type of thing anyone under that age range listens too
because it may be too scary for them, and most people over the age of 30 wouldn’t listen to it
because they would maybe like something less scary and more relaxed because people above
that age like more relaxed things. It would for both male and female because it’s going to have a
male and female as the main characters in the story. It would be for a group of people that can
mainly go to bnb’s so that they can relate to the experience, but it could also be for people who
haven’t because the story could work in another similar location.
Project Concept (approx. 200 words)
What is the concept for your project and what are you going to make?
What did you learning during research that will help you?
My project is going to be about a story of two people that are supposed go into a bnb and it
ends up being haunted and they need to get out. It’s going to be dialogue without any narration.
Experiments
Foley
• We went and recorded a bunch of sounds and put them over a clip of
Shawn of the dead to try and recreate the sounds in the film. I found it
hard to record the right sounds needed because we were limited to the
college and we didn’t have things that were making the sounds in the film
like a fridge so we had to make our own sounds. For example when he
grabs a can we slammed a bottle against the floor and changed the pitch.
I found it easy to sync everything up in post however I struggled with
mixing the volumes of the sounds for them to sound real.
Nursery Rhymes
• For this I have chosen ‘the wheels on the bus’
• I have chosen this because I think that it
would be easy to add sound effects to and it’s
a nursery rhyme which everyone knows.
• I need sound effect for tires screetching
Recording
• Write about your experiences of recording in
different places.
• What effect did it have? How will this
influence your project?
Garage Band
• https://youtu.be/w8dTB0XPKIU
• I found garage band really easy to use, I’ve used it a
few times before this but I wasn’t too familiar with it.
I found everything easy to find and I was able to put
a beat together fairly easily in 2 hours.

Evaluation
Research
• I researched audio by going onto YouTube and the BBC website and
listening to different types of audio. I listened to audio dramas,
soundscapes and narrations. I decided that I liked the audio dramas the
best so I ended up going with that style of audio even though they can be
the hardest to make. I found that to successfully create this style you have
to make it sounds like the listener is in the room with them. I think that I
took a lot away from the things that I did research. For example, using
reverb in audio dramas when sound effects happen to make them sound
like they’re happening around you. I think that I could however of listened
to more audio to get more ideas for my project. I also think that I could of
listened to different genres to hear what they do differently. I decided that
I wanted to make the type of audio that I did because they were the ones
that I enjoyed the most and found the most engaging when I was listening
to some of them. I found the other ones, such as soundscapes to be very
un-engaging and boring.
Planning
• The strengths of my planning were that I knew exactly how I wanted my
story to come across. I was very inspired by the doctor who audio books
and I very much wanted it to sound intense. I think this really helped my
overall product because I could tell whoever was voice acting exactly how I
wanted them to say their lines to make it sound intense. I think that I
could of come up with a better story. I could of also made my planning a
lot easier by choosing a story that already exists and making something
out of that, so then the story is better and u can plan other things to do
with the audio with more time.
Time Management
• I think that I managed my time very well throughout this project. I
managed to plan for the first weeks. Then I produced it for 2 weeks and
then I had a week left for evaluation. This meant I had the same amount
of time planning as I did making it. I wish however, that I had spread out
my planning a bit more. I didn’t do too much planning in the first week
and did most of it in the second week. I feel like If I had done more in the
first week then I could of expanded on my ideas more and could of ended
up with a better end product.
Technical Qualities
• I found that my work was very similar to many BBC audio dramas. It didn’t
have a narrator and it sounded as if you were there in the room with
them. There was ambience used and sound effects to make it sound like
the listener is there. There was also the intro music that I made at the
start of my drama with the narration over the top which some audio
dramas have but not all of them. I put this in because I think that it gives
the story a good introduction and it gave me a chance to use my skills in
garage band. I used ambience and foley to make it sound like you are in
the room. I used clips of air con in the bnb reception to make it sound like
somewhere the listener would have been. I recorded this by going to a
shop and recording the ambience noise. For my sound effects I also added
reverb when they’re in big rooms to make it sound like an echo, and I used
compression in the cupboard to make it sound like a small space.
Aural Qualities
• I think that my work sounds good and it does sound like you are in the
place that the people in the story are. I am very happy with the sound
track I created. I made it very simple but I think that it fit the creepy
theme with it being so stripped back and not being overcomplicated as if
there is an absence of safety and other people and you’re all alone. I am
also very happy with the ambience noise that I created I think that it
makes the whole thing sound more real and gives the illusion that the
listener is there. I think that I could of perhaps mixed the tracks better so
they’re as loud as they would be in real life. I think that I could of done
better with the voice acting. I think that it can take away from being there
because it seems so unrealistic. I also think that I could of put a better
effect on the ghost voice because It sounds very metallic and not very
ghost like, I think I would have been able to do that with more experience
with audition.
Audience Appeal
• I think that I have appealed to my audience, because it is very much
doctor who like and it fits the age range of 15-30 year olds. It might be a
bit too tense for somebody who is above the age of 30 and they might
want to listen to something a bit more relaxing than a horror story. On the
other hand it might be a bit too scary for people under the age of 15. I
think the part where Ethan is trapped in his room is where it’s most fitted
for that age range as it is the most tense part. However, the other parts
could easily fit all the age ranges as it isn’t scary and it’s just people
talking. However later on it starts to get a bit more tense and strange so it
might begin to edge towards more older people.

How to Create an Engaging Audio Drama

  • 2. Research- If you are unable to find your own examples, you can use the ones below. • The Archers (audio drama) • https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006qpgr/episodes/player • Short Cuts (documentary/factual) • https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01mk3f8/episodes/player • Lore (documentary/factual) • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3RGz7Q_qlI • Doctor Who (audio drama) • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZA50biqUB-8 • Soundscapes • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIUTO4gx5Eg • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JVm2IZ3ChU • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nc5YHodcXpM DELETE THIS SLIDE WHEN DONE
  • 3. Existing Products Research • Doctor Who - uses a non-diegetic soundtrack to create an intense atmosphere. - sound effects give context to what’s going on. - dialogue from the characters tells the story. - The soundtrack gets louder as he gets further into his speech to represent his power in what he’s saying. -
  • 4. Existing Products Research • The Archers – Use dialogue between characters to create a story. – Non diegetic sound effects are used to create and atmosphere and give context to where the characters are. – The sound track shows the start and the end of the show.
  • 5. Existing Products Research • Short cuts – Uses diegetic audio of things that they are talking about in the documentary. – Non diegetic use of music to create emotion of the subjects that they are talking about – Descriptions of the things bing seen – Non diegetic uses of sound effects of what they are describing. – Soundtrack over the top of of speaking shows that it’s the introduction to the documentary. – Sound effects over the sound track sets the scene.
  • 6. Existing Products Research • Beach soundscape – Non diegetic sound of the landscape – Sound effects used of stereotypical things that you would think of being at the beach to create the atmosphere for the listener. – A lot of the sound effects to make things seems like they’re all happening at the same time and like there’s lots of people like there would be at the beach.

  • 9. Story • Follows a band on tour slowly starting to find it harder to carry on playing. • Maybe a story a long the lines of bohemian rhapsody but shortened and a different ending.
  • 10. Idea Generation/Initial Reaction • A band member quits a band because he doesn’t enjoy it anymore. • The band go on to write a hit. • They end up bumping into him in a venue where they are playing and they end up inviting him back into the band.
  • 11. Idea Generation/Initial Reaction • A fast developing ghost story. • It would be presented with just speech from the characters like the show would be so it feels like you’re there. • Starts by them being on call with their friend on the phone. • They stay at a bnb and throughout the night they get woken up and they have to try and escape.
  • 12. Proposal Working Title: Locked Audience: I think that my audience would be very broad because it could be anyone from the age of 15-30 because it wouldn’t be the type of thing anyone under that age range listens too because it may be too scary for them, and most people over the age of 30 wouldn’t listen to it because they would maybe like something less scary and more relaxed because people above that age like more relaxed things. It would for both male and female because it’s going to have a male and female as the main characters in the story. It would be for a group of people that can mainly go to bnb’s so that they can relate to the experience, but it could also be for people who haven’t because the story could work in another similar location. Project Concept (approx. 200 words) What is the concept for your project and what are you going to make? What did you learning during research that will help you? My project is going to be about a story of two people that are supposed go into a bnb and it ends up being haunted and they need to get out. It’s going to be dialogue without any narration.
  • 14. Foley • We went and recorded a bunch of sounds and put them over a clip of Shawn of the dead to try and recreate the sounds in the film. I found it hard to record the right sounds needed because we were limited to the college and we didn’t have things that were making the sounds in the film like a fridge so we had to make our own sounds. For example when he grabs a can we slammed a bottle against the floor and changed the pitch. I found it easy to sync everything up in post however I struggled with mixing the volumes of the sounds for them to sound real.
  • 15. Nursery Rhymes • For this I have chosen ‘the wheels on the bus’ • I have chosen this because I think that it would be easy to add sound effects to and it’s a nursery rhyme which everyone knows. • I need sound effect for tires screetching
  • 16. Recording • Write about your experiences of recording in different places. • What effect did it have? How will this influence your project?
  • 17. Garage Band • https://youtu.be/w8dTB0XPKIU • I found garage band really easy to use, I’ve used it a few times before this but I wasn’t too familiar with it. I found everything easy to find and I was able to put a beat together fairly easily in 2 hours.

  • 33. Research • I researched audio by going onto YouTube and the BBC website and listening to different types of audio. I listened to audio dramas, soundscapes and narrations. I decided that I liked the audio dramas the best so I ended up going with that style of audio even though they can be the hardest to make. I found that to successfully create this style you have to make it sounds like the listener is in the room with them. I think that I took a lot away from the things that I did research. For example, using reverb in audio dramas when sound effects happen to make them sound like they’re happening around you. I think that I could however of listened to more audio to get more ideas for my project. I also think that I could of listened to different genres to hear what they do differently. I decided that I wanted to make the type of audio that I did because they were the ones that I enjoyed the most and found the most engaging when I was listening to some of them. I found the other ones, such as soundscapes to be very un-engaging and boring.
  • 34. Planning • The strengths of my planning were that I knew exactly how I wanted my story to come across. I was very inspired by the doctor who audio books and I very much wanted it to sound intense. I think this really helped my overall product because I could tell whoever was voice acting exactly how I wanted them to say their lines to make it sound intense. I think that I could of come up with a better story. I could of also made my planning a lot easier by choosing a story that already exists and making something out of that, so then the story is better and u can plan other things to do with the audio with more time.
  • 35. Time Management • I think that I managed my time very well throughout this project. I managed to plan for the first weeks. Then I produced it for 2 weeks and then I had a week left for evaluation. This meant I had the same amount of time planning as I did making it. I wish however, that I had spread out my planning a bit more. I didn’t do too much planning in the first week and did most of it in the second week. I feel like If I had done more in the first week then I could of expanded on my ideas more and could of ended up with a better end product.
  • 36. Technical Qualities • I found that my work was very similar to many BBC audio dramas. It didn’t have a narrator and it sounded as if you were there in the room with them. There was ambience used and sound effects to make it sound like the listener is there. There was also the intro music that I made at the start of my drama with the narration over the top which some audio dramas have but not all of them. I put this in because I think that it gives the story a good introduction and it gave me a chance to use my skills in garage band. I used ambience and foley to make it sound like you are in the room. I used clips of air con in the bnb reception to make it sound like somewhere the listener would have been. I recorded this by going to a shop and recording the ambience noise. For my sound effects I also added reverb when they’re in big rooms to make it sound like an echo, and I used compression in the cupboard to make it sound like a small space.
  • 37. Aural Qualities • I think that my work sounds good and it does sound like you are in the place that the people in the story are. I am very happy with the sound track I created. I made it very simple but I think that it fit the creepy theme with it being so stripped back and not being overcomplicated as if there is an absence of safety and other people and you’re all alone. I am also very happy with the ambience noise that I created I think that it makes the whole thing sound more real and gives the illusion that the listener is there. I think that I could of perhaps mixed the tracks better so they’re as loud as they would be in real life. I think that I could of done better with the voice acting. I think that it can take away from being there because it seems so unrealistic. I also think that I could of put a better effect on the ghost voice because It sounds very metallic and not very ghost like, I think I would have been able to do that with more experience with audition.
  • 38. Audience Appeal • I think that I have appealed to my audience, because it is very much doctor who like and it fits the age range of 15-30 year olds. It might be a bit too tense for somebody who is above the age of 30 and they might want to listen to something a bit more relaxing than a horror story. On the other hand it might be a bit too scary for people under the age of 15. I think the part where Ethan is trapped in his room is where it’s most fitted for that age range as it is the most tense part. However, the other parts could easily fit all the age ranges as it isn’t scary and it’s just people talking. However later on it starts to get a bit more tense and strange so it might begin to edge towards more older people.

Editor's Notes

  1. Go over as many slides as necessary. Research at least 3 products. Discuss the use of sound effects, music and performance. How have the producers suggested a location/time period and created a tone/feel Try to break down what you can hear. How do the different sound elements work together? How do sound effects add to the drama? What part does music play in the work? Try to listen to a variety of different types of radio programme. If you listen to drama and documentary, you will give yourself a better understanding of what exists and what is possible. It will also help guide your project.
