• Case File True Crime Podcast Spotify
– This podcast is the retelling of true crime cases, in a truthful, but eerily unsettling way. The episode I
am looking at is Case 118: The Chicago Tylenol Murders.
– The podcast begins with the increasing pace of a heartbeat to flat line, which fits the context of the
show about the taking of lives and murder. The connotation of the flat line is not only about life loss
or death, but has connotations of hospitals which are very clinical and sometimes scary places, and
possibly the notion of giving up, as some of the episodes of the podcast are unsolved mysteries. By
using the build up of a heart beat, and the crescendo, it matches the listeners heart beat, and builds
up tension.
– Throughout most of the episode, the music is only very silently in the background, buried under the
voice of the narrator. If you are not concentrating enough, or really listening intently to the narrator
and the story he is telling, it is always difficult to tell weather or not there is music and background
noise there, or if its just your mind playing tricks. The use of this very low and almost non-existent
sound, makes the reader question themselves, as they are being told a usually unsettling story about
murder and death. With the majority of the pod being silent apart from the subtle background
music, you begin to feel very immersed in the story, only deterring from listening when you are
reminded there is sound in the background.
– The main sound use is from the narration. The narrator retains a very melancholic tone throughout,
as he is being respectful to the people who have sadly been killed, but also takes pauses and breaks
for drama purposes, however the details of the true crime stories are drama enough to keep the
reader listening. To enhance what are already dramatic and horrific crimes, the writer of the script
has made it sound less like a news story with this inclusion of many adjectives about the settings and
adverbs to intensify what is being told to you, turning it more into a horror story, making the reader
immerse more, as the fact the contents is so abominable it cant be real.

• The Archers: Tom and Natasha's Wedding Vows
• https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p072ykm3
– The clip is all diegetic sound, which was probably done as the exchanging
of wedding vows is a very special and intimate thing, only shared by the
people the bride and groom want there with them. Because of this, the
voice actors playing the bride and groom sound very comfortable with
each other, expressed in the way they are speaking loudly and clearly. The
use of the stutter in the script, and the voice actors delivery, makes it
seem more realistic, and makes the listener connect more with the
character and it becomes more relatable.
– They also use diegetic sound in the form of laughter, which gives the wider
impression that they are all in a setting, such as a church or a registrar
office, as there is some slight reverb in the background, but possibly not
enough to suggest that they are in a church.

• Beach Soundscape
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIUTO4gx5Eg
• There is a lot going on in this soundscape, as you would expect on what sounds like a
busy beach.
• Everything in the soundscape is diegetic sound, with nothing distracting the listeners
from the fact they are on the beach. Overlaid are sounds that you would always expect
to find on the beach. Sea-gulls, the sound of waves as well as a subtle soft breeze. With
only these sounds, the listener would feel as though they were alone in nature, giving a
sense of escapism and paradise to whoever may be listening.
• However adding the voices of the people changes the soundscape to something
completely different. The voices in the beginning are loud and imposing, giving the
listener the impression that they are closer to them at this moment, and as we get
further through the soundscape, the voices soften and quietens giving the listener the
impression that they are further away, over all telling us that they have walked away all
from the use of volume. In a more subtle way, a similar thing happens with the seagulls,
as their caws dissolve slightly to possibly not indicate that they have flown further away,
just moved to a different place. All together and layered on top, it sounds like a busy day
at the beach, and a most likely sunny and calm day, as there is little wind and no
indication of rain.

• Dark Ambient Horror Mix
• https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5B6aaGwpSY
– The soundscape is full of very eerie noises, to create the spooky
ambience. They have mostly used industrial sounds which are not
natural and come from man made things, giving the listener a feeling
of unknowing , a fear that as humans we naturally are born with as a
way to protect us. With this supplied as the base tone, it creates an
image for the listener of abandoned human buildings, filled with
ghostly and other worldly beings.
– The slow almost purring of something the listener doesn't’t know, is at
a similar rate of breathing, as it builds and drops. This for some people
could be seen as calming as it matches their own biology, however it
could be seen as quite hypnotic for the person listening, giving the
sense of a slow call into the unknown and darkness of the sound.

Ideas
Idea Generation/Initial Reaction
• My initial reaction about this project was interest, as I have worked
with audio before, but I didn’t have as much freedom to do what I
wanted. I enjoy writing spooky stories, so it will be exciting to see
where this takes me, and I enjoy trying to come up with interesting
ideas, however this might mean that the production is more
difficult than if I perhaps did a simpler idea. I think the parts I will
find difficult in this project is actually making the story scary and
spooky, as its easy to communicate over a written story, but there
are more aspects to consider when it comes to audio, as I wont
have a visual aspect to work with. I am excited to work with Foley
again however, as doing the experiments was really fun and it made
me think a lot more about how to recrate simple things such as
walking and opening doors which I would usually neglect.
Proposal
Working Title:
Grace
Audience:
My audience is younger teenagers between 13-16, as the story isn’t as much of a scary story,
more of a story about a ghost, so it will appeal less to an older audience who usually want a real
fright. There is no social status that this is targeted, as the arts such as audio plays should be
available to everyone and anyone who is interested. The gender of listener might appeal to more
girls as the story only contains female characters, however boys might just as well be interested
due to the topic that it is about a blind woman.
Project Concept (approx. 200 words)
The concept of my project is about a blind woman who moves into a new apartment, living
independently for the first time, and believes she is receiving help from a woman named Grace
from blind aid, however in the end it is revealed it is the ghost of a woman who was killed a few
years ago in the flat. She does not know she is a ghost however, as she cannot see the dead
woman's spirit, and knows no better than to trust her. The fact that Grace is good to her, is all the
more shocking at the end, as we expect all spirits and ghosts to be demonic and horrific things,
but really they are just an after print of what used to be.
Experiments
Foley
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Qi5tDDVgEY
At the very beginning, I focused on the gate, as it is the first thing
we see. To create the sounds for this section, using a sound
recorder, we opened and closed a door and recorded the
creaking. I think this worked quite well, as put with the visuals of
him opening the gate, I do think it is believable. To make the
SMACK sound, we slammed on the same door we used for the
creaking. I think worked well, however in post I could have
maybe turned it down a bit, as it is quite imposing.
To add more of an atmosphere that Shaun was outside, I decided
to add some rustling to give the impression the wind was blowing
slightly. To do this, we went outside and recording leaves rustling
on trees, but we also scrunched leaves up in our hands too. I think
the idea was good, however the execution wasn’t the best, as you
could tell that it wasn’t really the leaves in the picture. To improve
this, I think I would lower the volume of the leaves, and overlap
more sounds to make it seem more authentic.
The sound use in the shop I think was where I did the best although there
were things to be improved on. To collect the sounds we went to the shop
downstairs to get some ambient noise, and get noises for the opening and
closing of fridges, which was helpful. When recording for when Shaun if
picking out the cans however, we forgot to take the cans out of the fridge, so it
sounded really echoey and didn’t work at all. Instead we left the sounds out.
The opening and closing of the fridge was successful as we had lots to work
with in the shop, and by slamming the doors we had plenty of volume to mess
around with.
Recording
• I enjoyed doing the foley task as it meant that we could go to
different locations to find different sounds, and explore different
options and have lots of room to experiment. We used outside and
inside locations, which both had their positives as well as negatives.
It was definitely more difficult to film outside as the microphone
picked up a lot of background noise such as the noise from the road
and people walking around. Inside of college we did a lot in
corridors and and in the small shop, but we found that it was either
too echoed too much, or the recording wasn't loud enough to be
heard. This will influence my project as it will help me when I come
to recording things such as dialogue and sounds. As I will not be
able to play the recordings back immediately, it means that I will do
more than one recording as insurance to make sure I have done it
the best way I can, and I will be more aware of where I am filming,
the times I am filming (i.e if its going to be busy in my house and on
roads ect).
Garage Band and Nursery Rhyme
To experiment and get myself more familiar with
Garage Band and Adobe Audition, I recorded myself
singing a nursery rhyme, and experimented with the
effects and tools within the program. To begin with, I
imported my voice recording that I did on my phone,
where I used voice memos and the microphone on my
ear phones to pick up the best sound.
I experimented with the RAZOR tool to cut out a
mistake in my recording, which I will probably use
more when it comes to my final recording.
I then sectioned other parts of the recording, and did separate edits
such as adding effects and speeding or slowing the clip down, into those
sections. This let me do lots of exploring of Adobe Audition and to
explore the tools I can use in my own project. I used things such as
PITCH SHIFTER to change the way my voice sounded completely, and
effects such as WIDE SPOOKY ECHO which adds a lot of reverb, and I
think I will use this to add atmosphere in my project.
I also added a track that I made in
garage band using RAIN CLOUDS
which is a synth track, and that added
a spooky atmosphere to the whole
thing, I think I will explore this further
for my planning.
Planning
Script Draft For my first draft, to make sure I knew exactly the
direction the ghost story was going in, I created a brief
timeline with little dialogue, and sectioned it into
Beginning, Middle, and End so I knew what was
happening at each part of the story. This was really
helpful as it meant that in my head I knew what was
going on so I could feel confident when I came to
writing the script.
In this draft, I decided on the names of the characters,
how many characters there would be, the setting of
the story, and the timeline. I didn't’t do it in too much
detail, as I didn't’t have too much time, but I did it in a
way that I understood what was going on. In certain
parts I include small sections of dialogue to signify
where the dialogue between characters was an
important part of the story, and it also gave me a
chance to really think about what they were going to
say, and I could always polish it and improve it in the
second draft.
Script Final In the final script I used a mixture of dialogue, stage
directions and narration to move the story forward. I
originally was planning on it being completely the characters
dialogue, but after reading through and having difficulty
creating dialogue, I decided that having narration would be
a good way to break up the story and summaries quickly
what was going on. The stage directions were also really
important as it shows me that that’s where sound is going to
be important and it also tells me that I need to get certain
sounds for that section.
I also have sections where there’s
lots of dialogue which is important
to the development of the story
here, and where sound is important,
but it will act as more secondary and
as an atmospheric part of the audio,
where as in other sections its in the
for-front.

Production
Daily Reflection Day 1
On the first day, I started by creating the
opening jingle for the play, so that I could
create the feel of the play from the very
beginning. I didn't’t want it to be too
complicated, as I felt that this would
overwhelm the listener. I decided to stick
to synth sounds as they create a state of
unsettlement for the listener, but it also
draws them in with the growing tension
and crescendo.
To make it less jarring, I added a gradual fade
to the jingle. By doing this the tension drops
slightly before the story begins, making the
listener want to continue. At the end, I
added a string track, as string instruments
can be quite jarring and creating some
unpleasant sounds and brings along
unpleasant feelings. I decided to keep the
string instruments on a low pitch as I think a
high pitch would be too much and just deter
the listener from continuing onward. The
long note also acts as a symbol of a pulse flat
lining, creating foreboding for the story to
come.
Daily Reflection Day 2
On day 2, I recorded my dialogue. I decided that it
would be better to do it on my phone and not on
a hand-held recorder, as they are really sensitive
and pick up lots of noise, and I didn't’t want
noises from around college to be picked up and
ruin the dialogue.
Once I had finished recording my dialogue, I
created a new project on Adobe Audition and
imported all of my audio recordings I made for
sound effects, and the audio I had done that day.
Although I hadn’t used audition before, it was
quite a simple platform to work on, and I got used
to it quite quickly. Some sections of audio on the
same recordings worked well, but other parts
were slightly muffled or we had messed up certain
lines. So that I could keep the good stuff that
worked well for the project, I used the “clip” tool
to make selections, and deleted the bits that I
didn't’t want.
Daily Reflection Day 3
On day 3, I started really bringing all my dialogue, and my Foley sound
effects together to create a piece. As I had quite a few different
sounds that represented different things, I started to organize them
and put them on their own separate tracks. For example, in the
beginning I have a lot of sound effects for Grace, when she makes the
tea ect, so I put them on a separate track named “Grace’s
movements.” I also did the same with Annie's, and I created a
separate track for the ambient noise at the bottom. I kept the
dialogue in the same track however, as I didn't’t record the lines
separately so it was all in one block of recording.
I also created a transition composition for the
section where the kettle is boiling, as I wanted
something to represent the transition between
them first meeting, and their first real
conversation as friends, but I wanted to make it
eerie with some light tones underneath.
Daily Reflection Day 4
On Day 4, I got further into production. Most of
day 4 I spent adding more dialogue and sound
effects to go with it, however today I also did
some pitch shifting and experimentation. To
make one of the characters voices sound more
jarring, angry, and “other worldly”, I used the
pitch shifter too lower the pitch of Graces voice.
I did this on multiple sections and used to razor
tool to select the part of the recording I wanted.
To also add to the demonic voices I added sound
effects. On top of the pitch shift this really added
to the sound and helped add to the atmosphere.
I also created a new piece of transition music, and this
time it was to show that time had passed. Initially I
wanted to have a ticking clock sample, however I was
unsure on how to do this in Garage Band, so instead I
used some high pitch notes that slowly ascended. To
keep the theme, I also added an underlying synth track
to add tension. I used the “String Cycle” instrument as
at this point in the story nothing bad has really
happened and it’ still quite joyful as the friendship is
building, however there is a slight bit of foreboding in
the eerie synth.
Daily Reflection Day 5
After the work I did on Day 4, I listened through the whole
piece to make sure it was all working. Whilst doing so, I
realized I had left out quite a lot of sound effects, and had
chance to add more in places, however I didn't’t have the
resources to record more Foley. I decided however to go
online to this website, and download sound effects I could
use. This worked very well, as I could communicate what
was happening more, and I could also download music to
build tension and mood.
Some of the voice acting I had done,
didn't’t communicate what I wanted
as well as I would have liked, so I
decided to use sections of the
dialogue from that part in the story,
and layerd them on top of the
original to create a sense of panic.
This worked well and I also did it in
some other parts as well.
Daily Reflection Day 6
On the final day, I added the final
pieces of my dialogue, soundtrack and
sound effects, and once I was certain
everything was assembled, I listened
through one final time to clean and
polish anything that I wanted to
improve.
Once everything was as I liked, I
exported my work. To do this, I
selected EXPORT, MULTITRACK
MIXDOWN, and ENTIRE SESSION. I
saved it into the same folder as the
rest of my tracks including the garage
band tracks I had created.
One of the improvements I made at the end
once listening through was to create samples
from through the play, and add them to the
final telling of Grace’s story. To make them
more spooky, as some of the sections I took the
samples from were genreal speech, I added
reverb onto them and used the effect WIDE
SPOOKY ECHOE in Adobe Audacity a lot, as this
helped to create an atmosphere.
Evaluation
Research
• Due to the project being Audio based, I found it more difficult to research. A
lot of the audio plays I looked at either had a lot of speech and had sound
effects as secondary, or there were a multitude of sounds but they were very
short or very long. I think looking at soundscapes that didn't’t necessarily link
to the project, helped me understand how to layer sounds to create a good
setting, and helped me understand how to think in detail about sounds I
would need, that would normally not be thought about, for example
ambience. To improve on my research, I think I could look at a few more
examples and try to not let the length deter me. Although it was difficult to
find good examples that you didn't’t have to sit for a while to listen to, it would
have helped me understand the structure and the way different audio plays
and audio projects could be created, and different concepts that could be
created from that, in a better way. I think that the research I did, however,
helped me just enough to build my understanding and make me think about
things I could do. Once I had done some solid research, I got the chance to do
some Foley Sound recording to a clip from the film Shaun of the Dead. This
was really fun as it meant we had to think carefully about what sounds are
around us and how we can record them and layer them in a way to make our
own soundscape pieces.
Planning
• As I enjoy writing more story based things with more description and less speech, I
came up with lots of ideas for stories quite quickly, however it was difficult for me to
translate that into a more dialogue based form. To decided what story idea was best, I
made mind-maps of my 3 favourite ideas with detailed points including what effects I
would need, the settings, the characters and actors ect. This was really helpful as I
prefer to learn in a visual way with everything that is important to the progression of
the project easily visible. This was one of my strengths in planning, as I believe if I had
done it another way it would’t have been as easy for me to come to a conclusion.
Because it was all audio based, it meant that I couldn't’t use things such as mood
boards and style sheets, as there was no need to, and in the past I have relied on this
process of planning a lot, so it helped me explore new ways to think about the project. I
also did a lot of work on the script, as it was really the only way I could see the timeline
of the story and actually read it, and therefore I made 2 different drafts which helped
me understand what was going on. I think to improve however I could have done a third
and final draft as when it came to recording I don’t think some of the dialogue was as
impactful as I wanted, as it it what you are relying on with sound and audio. Doing the
Foley task also got use used to recording in different places, and how , for example,
standing outside would effect the quality and the sound of the voice, compared to if we
were inside in a large hall. This prepared us for doing our own recordings as it made me
aware of problems I might have in the future.
Time Management
• As I mentioned in the planning section, if I had had more time, I would have
liked to look over my script again and change some more things before coming
to recording. A lot of my time planning was spent on my script, which ended
up being very long, so I couldn't’t prioritise other things as I had already used
up a lot of time. To improve, I would have shortened my script and spent more
time on other parts of planning such as the sounds I would need and how to
collect them. Due to my script being very long, it meant that my final audio
piece was quite long, and went over the allocated time. Although it was long,
it didn't’t really finish the production too late, and the last day I spent mostly
cleaning and polishing, so I think over all my time management was quite
good. On the other hand, it took me quite a while to collect the sounds I
needed, and when it came to production I found that I didn’t have everything I
needed, so had to go back the next weekend to collect more sounds. Although
it would have been better if I could have got all the sounds I needed in one go,
it didn’t take too much time, and I also used sound effects I found on the
internet.
Technical Qualities
• As my project was less of a horror story, and more a story ABOUT a ghost, it took place in a mostly normal setting, an
apartment. Because of this is meant lots of the story involved a lot of daily general domestic tasks to fit the setting,
and because of this it meant that it was easy for me to collect sounds myself using a hand held recorder. By using a
handheld recorder, it meant that it was very sensitive which meant that it picked up lots of small sounds that you
wouldn't’t usually notice, which was good for creating ambience, but it also meant I had to extra careful whilst
recording, making sure that I didn't’t move too much whilst recording, and you couldn't’t hear too much background
noise. Because it also wasn’t a digital recorder, it meant that I couldn't’t listen to the recording immediately after, I
had to record things a few times over to make sure that I got everything I needed in one go. Although it wasn’t very
detrimental to the collection of the sounds if they weren't perfect first time round, it was sometimes inconvenient
when I came to listen to it and realized it wasn’t the way I wanted, and had to re-record certain things.
• For recording dialogue, instead of using the hand held recorder, I decided to use the voice-memos app on my
phone, as I didn't’t want the microphone to pick up too much background noise from college, where most of the
recording took place. This worked quite well as when you listened to the dialogue you did get the sense that you
were in a small apartment and it seemed more real than if it had just simply been the voices into the microphone,
and I was happy with the way it turned out. Contrastingly with the narration, I did want it to sound as though it was
in a studio, and that there wasn’t any sense of setting at all, so the listener just heard the voice and the story. I still
used the voice memo app for the narration, but I spoke directly into the microphone on my earphones to pick up the
voice as crisp and in as much quality as possible. This worked really well and you could tell a clear difference
between the two separate dialogue recordings I did.
• To enhance some of the recordings and to make them more spooky, I used a lot of effects in adobe audition, and
mostly used the WIDE SPOOKY ECHO, as this added reverb but not so much that you couldn't’t tell what the
character was saying. I also used the PITCH SHIFTER a lot to suggest the characters voice had changed, and mostly
used it on Grace when she was angry or upset. Due to a few issues with cast members and recordings, I had to ask
my cousin to help, and mine and her voices sounded quite similar when I listened in post production, so I used the
pitch shifter here also to make our voices sound more contrasting.
Aural Qualities
• When I first came to production and had all my recordings and my effects in front of
me, I was feeling really worried about the overall quality and standard of the project.
However when I began putting it together and it began to take shape, it think I began to
feel more confident, as I could fix the majority of things I didn't’t like, and used lots of
effects to enhance and amplify the story.
• The the audio for my voice recordings and dialogue, I think it wasn’t the best quality
wise, as in a lot of the clips it sounded quieter in certain sections, and louder in others,
but with the effects I used it did up the quality slightly.
• Certain parts of dialogue such as the part where Annie falls and hurts her leg, the acting
was the best pre-editing. However when I wasn’t happy with it and how it didn’t really
add anything to the story, I decided to layer over different sound clips to emphasize
what was going on, and how Annie was going delusional with the pain. I also did this at
the very end when Graces story was being told. I think the way that I solved this
problem was quite creative, and did actually really help the atmosphere and feel of the
story at those certain parts, and without doing this I think it would definitely be lacking
at points.
• I think something that I could improve in the future, if I had more time, would be to
make all the sounds and dialogue sound level, as some sections sounded un-equal and
it has effected the quality slightly.
Audience Appeal
• My target audience were younger teens around 12-16, as the story wasn’t
supposed to be a horror, more just a story about a ghost, and I don’t think
this would appeal to an older audience who usually want a good scare and
to feel impacted after they have listened.
• I think my target audience would listen to this, as it includes other genres
such as aspects of mystery and thriller, with the reveal at the end that
Grace isn’t alive, and in fact died years before.
• I think the certain aspects of the audio project that would appeal to the
audience is the reveal at the end, which might shock younger audiences in
contrast to older audience who might find the twist within the play and
the ending might be more lack luster. I also think that the female
friendship and the caring friendship that they have, which would appeal
more to a female audience. I think the idea that we are also being told the
story of a blind woman might appeal to more people as it’s not really
discussed.

  • 3. Existing Products Research • Case File True Crime Podcast Spotify – This podcast is the retelling of true crime cases, in a truthful, but eerily unsettling way. The episode I am looking at is Case 118: The Chicago Tylenol Murders. – The podcast begins with the increasing pace of a heartbeat to flat line, which fits the context of the show about the taking of lives and murder. The connotation of the flat line is not only about life loss or death, but has connotations of hospitals which are very clinical and sometimes scary places, and possibly the notion of giving up, as some of the episodes of the podcast are unsolved mysteries. By using the build up of a heart beat, and the crescendo, it matches the listeners heart beat, and builds up tension. – Throughout most of the episode, the music is only very silently in the background, buried under the voice of the narrator. If you are not concentrating enough, or really listening intently to the narrator and the story he is telling, it is always difficult to tell weather or not there is music and background noise there, or if its just your mind playing tricks. The use of this very low and almost non-existent sound, makes the reader question themselves, as they are being told a usually unsettling story about murder and death. With the majority of the pod being silent apart from the subtle background music, you begin to feel very immersed in the story, only deterring from listening when you are reminded there is sound in the background. – The main sound use is from the narration. The narrator retains a very melancholic tone throughout, as he is being respectful to the people who have sadly been killed, but also takes pauses and breaks for drama purposes, however the details of the true crime stories are drama enough to keep the reader listening. To enhance what are already dramatic and horrific crimes, the writer of the script has made it sound less like a news story with this inclusion of many adjectives about the settings and adverbs to intensify what is being told to you, turning it more into a horror story, making the reader immerse more, as the fact the contents is so abominable it cant be real.
  • 4. Existing Products Research • The Archers: Tom and Natasha's Wedding Vows • https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p072ykm3 – The clip is all diegetic sound, which was probably done as the exchanging of wedding vows is a very special and intimate thing, only shared by the people the bride and groom want there with them. Because of this, the voice actors playing the bride and groom sound very comfortable with each other, expressed in the way they are speaking loudly and clearly. The use of the stutter in the script, and the voice actors delivery, makes it seem more realistic, and makes the listener connect more with the character and it becomes more relatable. – They also use diegetic sound in the form of laughter, which gives the wider impression that they are all in a setting, such as a church or a registrar office, as there is some slight reverb in the background, but possibly not enough to suggest that they are in a church.
  • 5. Existing Products Research • Beach Soundscape https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIUTO4gx5Eg • There is a lot going on in this soundscape, as you would expect on what sounds like a busy beach. • Everything in the soundscape is diegetic sound, with nothing distracting the listeners from the fact they are on the beach. Overlaid are sounds that you would always expect to find on the beach. Sea-gulls, the sound of waves as well as a subtle soft breeze. With only these sounds, the listener would feel as though they were alone in nature, giving a sense of escapism and paradise to whoever may be listening. • However adding the voices of the people changes the soundscape to something completely different. The voices in the beginning are loud and imposing, giving the listener the impression that they are closer to them at this moment, and as we get further through the soundscape, the voices soften and quietens giving the listener the impression that they are further away, over all telling us that they have walked away all from the use of volume. In a more subtle way, a similar thing happens with the seagulls, as their caws dissolve slightly to possibly not indicate that they have flown further away, just moved to a different place. All together and layered on top, it sounds like a busy day at the beach, and a most likely sunny and calm day, as there is little wind and no indication of rain.
  • 6. Existing Products Research • Dark Ambient Horror Mix • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5B6aaGwpSY – The soundscape is full of very eerie noises, to create the spooky ambience. They have mostly used industrial sounds which are not natural and come from man made things, giving the listener a feeling of unknowing , a fear that as humans we naturally are born with as a way to protect us. With this supplied as the base tone, it creates an image for the listener of abandoned human buildings, filled with ghostly and other worldly beings. – The slow almost purring of something the listener doesn't’t know, is at a similar rate of breathing, as it builds and drops. This for some people could be seen as calming as it matches their own biology, however it could be seen as quite hypnotic for the person listening, giving the sense of a slow call into the unknown and darkness of the sound.

  • 12. Idea Generation/Initial Reaction • My initial reaction about this project was interest, as I have worked with audio before, but I didn’t have as much freedom to do what I wanted. I enjoy writing spooky stories, so it will be exciting to see where this takes me, and I enjoy trying to come up with interesting ideas, however this might mean that the production is more difficult than if I perhaps did a simpler idea. I think the parts I will find difficult in this project is actually making the story scary and spooky, as its easy to communicate over a written story, but there are more aspects to consider when it comes to audio, as I wont have a visual aspect to work with. I am excited to work with Foley again however, as doing the experiments was really fun and it made me think a lot more about how to recrate simple things such as walking and opening doors which I would usually neglect.
  • 13. Proposal Working Title: Grace Audience: My audience is younger teenagers between 13-16, as the story isn’t as much of a scary story, more of a story about a ghost, so it will appeal less to an older audience who usually want a real fright. There is no social status that this is targeted, as the arts such as audio plays should be available to everyone and anyone who is interested. The gender of listener might appeal to more girls as the story only contains female characters, however boys might just as well be interested due to the topic that it is about a blind woman. Project Concept (approx. 200 words) The concept of my project is about a blind woman who moves into a new apartment, living independently for the first time, and believes she is receiving help from a woman named Grace from blind aid, however in the end it is revealed it is the ghost of a woman who was killed a few years ago in the flat. She does not know she is a ghost however, as she cannot see the dead woman's spirit, and knows no better than to trust her. The fact that Grace is good to her, is all the more shocking at the end, as we expect all spirits and ghosts to be demonic and horrific things, but really they are just an after print of what used to be.
  • 15. Foley https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Qi5tDDVgEY At the very beginning, I focused on the gate, as it is the first thing we see. To create the sounds for this section, using a sound recorder, we opened and closed a door and recorded the creaking. I think this worked quite well, as put with the visuals of him opening the gate, I do think it is believable. To make the SMACK sound, we slammed on the same door we used for the creaking. I think worked well, however in post I could have maybe turned it down a bit, as it is quite imposing. To add more of an atmosphere that Shaun was outside, I decided to add some rustling to give the impression the wind was blowing slightly. To do this, we went outside and recording leaves rustling on trees, but we also scrunched leaves up in our hands too. I think the idea was good, however the execution wasn’t the best, as you could tell that it wasn’t really the leaves in the picture. To improve this, I think I would lower the volume of the leaves, and overlap more sounds to make it seem more authentic. The sound use in the shop I think was where I did the best although there were things to be improved on. To collect the sounds we went to the shop downstairs to get some ambient noise, and get noises for the opening and closing of fridges, which was helpful. When recording for when Shaun if picking out the cans however, we forgot to take the cans out of the fridge, so it sounded really echoey and didn’t work at all. Instead we left the sounds out. The opening and closing of the fridge was successful as we had lots to work with in the shop, and by slamming the doors we had plenty of volume to mess around with.
  • 16. Recording • I enjoyed doing the foley task as it meant that we could go to different locations to find different sounds, and explore different options and have lots of room to experiment. We used outside and inside locations, which both had their positives as well as negatives. It was definitely more difficult to film outside as the microphone picked up a lot of background noise such as the noise from the road and people walking around. Inside of college we did a lot in corridors and and in the small shop, but we found that it was either too echoed too much, or the recording wasn't loud enough to be heard. This will influence my project as it will help me when I come to recording things such as dialogue and sounds. As I will not be able to play the recordings back immediately, it means that I will do more than one recording as insurance to make sure I have done it the best way I can, and I will be more aware of where I am filming, the times I am filming (i.e if its going to be busy in my house and on roads ect).
  • 17. Garage Band and Nursery Rhyme To experiment and get myself more familiar with Garage Band and Adobe Audition, I recorded myself singing a nursery rhyme, and experimented with the effects and tools within the program. To begin with, I imported my voice recording that I did on my phone, where I used voice memos and the microphone on my ear phones to pick up the best sound. I experimented with the RAZOR tool to cut out a mistake in my recording, which I will probably use more when it comes to my final recording. I then sectioned other parts of the recording, and did separate edits such as adding effects and speeding or slowing the clip down, into those sections. This let me do lots of exploring of Adobe Audition and to explore the tools I can use in my own project. I used things such as PITCH SHIFTER to change the way my voice sounded completely, and effects such as WIDE SPOOKY ECHO which adds a lot of reverb, and I think I will use this to add atmosphere in my project. I also added a track that I made in garage band using RAIN CLOUDS which is a synth track, and that added a spooky atmosphere to the whole thing, I think I will explore this further for my planning.
  • 19. Script Draft For my first draft, to make sure I knew exactly the direction the ghost story was going in, I created a brief timeline with little dialogue, and sectioned it into Beginning, Middle, and End so I knew what was happening at each part of the story. This was really helpful as it meant that in my head I knew what was going on so I could feel confident when I came to writing the script. In this draft, I decided on the names of the characters, how many characters there would be, the setting of the story, and the timeline. I didn't’t do it in too much detail, as I didn't’t have too much time, but I did it in a way that I understood what was going on. In certain parts I include small sections of dialogue to signify where the dialogue between characters was an important part of the story, and it also gave me a chance to really think about what they were going to say, and I could always polish it and improve it in the second draft.
  • 20. Script Final In the final script I used a mixture of dialogue, stage directions and narration to move the story forward. I originally was planning on it being completely the characters dialogue, but after reading through and having difficulty creating dialogue, I decided that having narration would be a good way to break up the story and summaries quickly what was going on. The stage directions were also really important as it shows me that that’s where sound is going to be important and it also tells me that I need to get certain sounds for that section. I also have sections where there’s lots of dialogue which is important to the development of the story here, and where sound is important, but it will act as more secondary and as an atmospheric part of the audio, where as in other sections its in the for-front.

  • 26. Daily Reflection Day 1 On the first day, I started by creating the opening jingle for the play, so that I could create the feel of the play from the very beginning. I didn't’t want it to be too complicated, as I felt that this would overwhelm the listener. I decided to stick to synth sounds as they create a state of unsettlement for the listener, but it also draws them in with the growing tension and crescendo. To make it less jarring, I added a gradual fade to the jingle. By doing this the tension drops slightly before the story begins, making the listener want to continue. At the end, I added a string track, as string instruments can be quite jarring and creating some unpleasant sounds and brings along unpleasant feelings. I decided to keep the string instruments on a low pitch as I think a high pitch would be too much and just deter the listener from continuing onward. The long note also acts as a symbol of a pulse flat lining, creating foreboding for the story to come.
  • 27. Daily Reflection Day 2 On day 2, I recorded my dialogue. I decided that it would be better to do it on my phone and not on a hand-held recorder, as they are really sensitive and pick up lots of noise, and I didn't’t want noises from around college to be picked up and ruin the dialogue. Once I had finished recording my dialogue, I created a new project on Adobe Audition and imported all of my audio recordings I made for sound effects, and the audio I had done that day. Although I hadn’t used audition before, it was quite a simple platform to work on, and I got used to it quite quickly. Some sections of audio on the same recordings worked well, but other parts were slightly muffled or we had messed up certain lines. So that I could keep the good stuff that worked well for the project, I used the “clip” tool to make selections, and deleted the bits that I didn't’t want.
  • 28. Daily Reflection Day 3 On day 3, I started really bringing all my dialogue, and my Foley sound effects together to create a piece. As I had quite a few different sounds that represented different things, I started to organize them and put them on their own separate tracks. For example, in the beginning I have a lot of sound effects for Grace, when she makes the tea ect, so I put them on a separate track named “Grace’s movements.” I also did the same with Annie's, and I created a separate track for the ambient noise at the bottom. I kept the dialogue in the same track however, as I didn't’t record the lines separately so it was all in one block of recording. I also created a transition composition for the section where the kettle is boiling, as I wanted something to represent the transition between them first meeting, and their first real conversation as friends, but I wanted to make it eerie with some light tones underneath.
  • 29. Daily Reflection Day 4 On Day 4, I got further into production. Most of day 4 I spent adding more dialogue and sound effects to go with it, however today I also did some pitch shifting and experimentation. To make one of the characters voices sound more jarring, angry, and “other worldly”, I used the pitch shifter too lower the pitch of Graces voice. I did this on multiple sections and used to razor tool to select the part of the recording I wanted. To also add to the demonic voices I added sound effects. On top of the pitch shift this really added to the sound and helped add to the atmosphere. I also created a new piece of transition music, and this time it was to show that time had passed. Initially I wanted to have a ticking clock sample, however I was unsure on how to do this in Garage Band, so instead I used some high pitch notes that slowly ascended. To keep the theme, I also added an underlying synth track to add tension. I used the “String Cycle” instrument as at this point in the story nothing bad has really happened and it’ still quite joyful as the friendship is building, however there is a slight bit of foreboding in the eerie synth.
  • 30. Daily Reflection Day 5 After the work I did on Day 4, I listened through the whole piece to make sure it was all working. Whilst doing so, I realized I had left out quite a lot of sound effects, and had chance to add more in places, however I didn't’t have the resources to record more Foley. I decided however to go online to this website, and download sound effects I could use. This worked very well, as I could communicate what was happening more, and I could also download music to build tension and mood. Some of the voice acting I had done, didn't’t communicate what I wanted as well as I would have liked, so I decided to use sections of the dialogue from that part in the story, and layerd them on top of the original to create a sense of panic. This worked well and I also did it in some other parts as well.
  • 31. Daily Reflection Day 6 On the final day, I added the final pieces of my dialogue, soundtrack and sound effects, and once I was certain everything was assembled, I listened through one final time to clean and polish anything that I wanted to improve. Once everything was as I liked, I exported my work. To do this, I selected EXPORT, MULTITRACK MIXDOWN, and ENTIRE SESSION. I saved it into the same folder as the rest of my tracks including the garage band tracks I had created. One of the improvements I made at the end once listening through was to create samples from through the play, and add them to the final telling of Grace’s story. To make them more spooky, as some of the sections I took the samples from were genreal speech, I added reverb onto them and used the effect WIDE SPOOKY ECHOE in Adobe Audacity a lot, as this helped to create an atmosphere.
  • 33. Research • Due to the project being Audio based, I found it more difficult to research. A lot of the audio plays I looked at either had a lot of speech and had sound effects as secondary, or there were a multitude of sounds but they were very short or very long. I think looking at soundscapes that didn't’t necessarily link to the project, helped me understand how to layer sounds to create a good setting, and helped me understand how to think in detail about sounds I would need, that would normally not be thought about, for example ambience. To improve on my research, I think I could look at a few more examples and try to not let the length deter me. Although it was difficult to find good examples that you didn't’t have to sit for a while to listen to, it would have helped me understand the structure and the way different audio plays and audio projects could be created, and different concepts that could be created from that, in a better way. I think that the research I did, however, helped me just enough to build my understanding and make me think about things I could do. Once I had done some solid research, I got the chance to do some Foley Sound recording to a clip from the film Shaun of the Dead. This was really fun as it meant we had to think carefully about what sounds are around us and how we can record them and layer them in a way to make our own soundscape pieces.
  • 34. Planning • As I enjoy writing more story based things with more description and less speech, I came up with lots of ideas for stories quite quickly, however it was difficult for me to translate that into a more dialogue based form. To decided what story idea was best, I made mind-maps of my 3 favourite ideas with detailed points including what effects I would need, the settings, the characters and actors ect. This was really helpful as I prefer to learn in a visual way with everything that is important to the progression of the project easily visible. This was one of my strengths in planning, as I believe if I had done it another way it would’t have been as easy for me to come to a conclusion. Because it was all audio based, it meant that I couldn't’t use things such as mood boards and style sheets, as there was no need to, and in the past I have relied on this process of planning a lot, so it helped me explore new ways to think about the project. I also did a lot of work on the script, as it was really the only way I could see the timeline of the story and actually read it, and therefore I made 2 different drafts which helped me understand what was going on. I think to improve however I could have done a third and final draft as when it came to recording I don’t think some of the dialogue was as impactful as I wanted, as it it what you are relying on with sound and audio. Doing the Foley task also got use used to recording in different places, and how , for example, standing outside would effect the quality and the sound of the voice, compared to if we were inside in a large hall. This prepared us for doing our own recordings as it made me aware of problems I might have in the future.
  • 35. Time Management • As I mentioned in the planning section, if I had had more time, I would have liked to look over my script again and change some more things before coming to recording. A lot of my time planning was spent on my script, which ended up being very long, so I couldn't’t prioritise other things as I had already used up a lot of time. To improve, I would have shortened my script and spent more time on other parts of planning such as the sounds I would need and how to collect them. Due to my script being very long, it meant that my final audio piece was quite long, and went over the allocated time. Although it was long, it didn't’t really finish the production too late, and the last day I spent mostly cleaning and polishing, so I think over all my time management was quite good. On the other hand, it took me quite a while to collect the sounds I needed, and when it came to production I found that I didn’t have everything I needed, so had to go back the next weekend to collect more sounds. Although it would have been better if I could have got all the sounds I needed in one go, it didn’t take too much time, and I also used sound effects I found on the internet.
  • 36. Technical Qualities • As my project was less of a horror story, and more a story ABOUT a ghost, it took place in a mostly normal setting, an apartment. Because of this is meant lots of the story involved a lot of daily general domestic tasks to fit the setting, and because of this it meant that it was easy for me to collect sounds myself using a hand held recorder. By using a handheld recorder, it meant that it was very sensitive which meant that it picked up lots of small sounds that you wouldn't’t usually notice, which was good for creating ambience, but it also meant I had to extra careful whilst recording, making sure that I didn't’t move too much whilst recording, and you couldn't’t hear too much background noise. Because it also wasn’t a digital recorder, it meant that I couldn't’t listen to the recording immediately after, I had to record things a few times over to make sure that I got everything I needed in one go. Although it wasn’t very detrimental to the collection of the sounds if they weren't perfect first time round, it was sometimes inconvenient when I came to listen to it and realized it wasn’t the way I wanted, and had to re-record certain things. • For recording dialogue, instead of using the hand held recorder, I decided to use the voice-memos app on my phone, as I didn't’t want the microphone to pick up too much background noise from college, where most of the recording took place. This worked quite well as when you listened to the dialogue you did get the sense that you were in a small apartment and it seemed more real than if it had just simply been the voices into the microphone, and I was happy with the way it turned out. Contrastingly with the narration, I did want it to sound as though it was in a studio, and that there wasn’t any sense of setting at all, so the listener just heard the voice and the story. I still used the voice memo app for the narration, but I spoke directly into the microphone on my earphones to pick up the voice as crisp and in as much quality as possible. This worked really well and you could tell a clear difference between the two separate dialogue recordings I did. • To enhance some of the recordings and to make them more spooky, I used a lot of effects in adobe audition, and mostly used the WIDE SPOOKY ECHO, as this added reverb but not so much that you couldn't’t tell what the character was saying. I also used the PITCH SHIFTER a lot to suggest the characters voice had changed, and mostly used it on Grace when she was angry or upset. Due to a few issues with cast members and recordings, I had to ask my cousin to help, and mine and her voices sounded quite similar when I listened in post production, so I used the pitch shifter here also to make our voices sound more contrasting.
  • 37. Aural Qualities • When I first came to production and had all my recordings and my effects in front of me, I was feeling really worried about the overall quality and standard of the project. However when I began putting it together and it began to take shape, it think I began to feel more confident, as I could fix the majority of things I didn't’t like, and used lots of effects to enhance and amplify the story. • The the audio for my voice recordings and dialogue, I think it wasn’t the best quality wise, as in a lot of the clips it sounded quieter in certain sections, and louder in others, but with the effects I used it did up the quality slightly. • Certain parts of dialogue such as the part where Annie falls and hurts her leg, the acting was the best pre-editing. However when I wasn’t happy with it and how it didn’t really add anything to the story, I decided to layer over different sound clips to emphasize what was going on, and how Annie was going delusional with the pain. I also did this at the very end when Graces story was being told. I think the way that I solved this problem was quite creative, and did actually really help the atmosphere and feel of the story at those certain parts, and without doing this I think it would definitely be lacking at points. • I think something that I could improve in the future, if I had more time, would be to make all the sounds and dialogue sound level, as some sections sounded un-equal and it has effected the quality slightly.
  • 38. Audience Appeal • My target audience were younger teens around 12-16, as the story wasn’t supposed to be a horror, more just a story about a ghost, and I don’t think this would appeal to an older audience who usually want a good scare and to feel impacted after they have listened. • I think my target audience would listen to this, as it includes other genres such as aspects of mystery and thriller, with the reveal at the end that Grace isn’t alive, and in fact died years before. • I think the certain aspects of the audio project that would appeal to the audience is the reveal at the end, which might shock younger audiences in contrast to older audience who might find the twist within the play and the ending might be more lack luster. I also think that the female friendship and the caring friendship that they have, which would appeal more to a female audience. I think the idea that we are also being told the story of a blind woman might appeal to more people as it’s not really discussed.

Editor's Notes

  1. Go over as many slides as necessary. Research at least 3 products. Discuss the use of sound effects, music and performance. How have the producers suggested a location/time period and created a tone/feel Try to break down what you can hear. How do the different sound elements work together? How do sound effects add to the drama? What part does music play in the work? Try to listen to a variety of different types of radio programme. If you listen to drama and documentary, you will give yourself a better understanding of what exists and what is possible. It will also help guide your project.
