This document summarizes research on developing a novel polymeric surfactant based on sugar for use in hand washes. Researchers synthesized various sugar-based polymers and analyzed their properties. Polymer S1 was selected for use in hand wash formulations due to its excellent cleaning performance, high viscosity, and desired HLB ratio. Hand wash compositions containing 25-35% of polymer S1 were developed. Analysis showed compositions HW4 and HW5 had desirable pH, viscosity, surface tension reduction comparable to a commercial hand wash product. The sugar-based polymer is an eco-friendly alternative to petroleum-based surfactants commonly used in hand washes.
