2. Football Vs Big Blue Football
Although the season may not started the way we would have liked, we have been persistent to get
better since the beginning of our journey. It could have been easy to pack up our bags and call it a year
early on. However, Big Blue football simply does not give up. Every player wears their jersey with
pride and holds their head high. During practice, we improve together and learn from our mistakes.
We are not a group of individuals, but a unified team. We cannot rely on one person to carry us on
their back, as we all have our individual tasks that need to be accomplished in order to be successful.
In my second year at Andover, I have learned that Andover football is more than just a commitment to
the game we all love. It is about flying to the

Charlie Horse
In Shadow of a Doubt, Hitchcock utilizes and stretches the ambiguous line between comedy and
suspense by utilizing smaller characters in the film to keep the story line moving, and to help break
sequence or rhythm of what the audience had been perceiving at the time. Many of the minor
characters were used as fillers , such as the waitress in the bar when Uncle Charlie and Charlie are
sitting in the bar, and makes the comment I would die for a ring like this ; or the quiet, gentle neighbor
Herb who is fascinated with the process of homicide and murder. It brings to the audience an
immediate comic relief, but similar to all of Hitchcock, leaves an unsettling feeling of fear and
suspense with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But in keeping in theme with the waltz, it is also a dance that has strategically placed steps and
movements that every good dancer knows, and cherishes. It sets up the mood immediately for the
audience subconsciously that everything is in strict moral uniformity and cleanliness, what a small
town should be: precise, well groomed, and normal, keeping in trend with the such prevalent
Hitchcockian irony.
One of the characters that stood out for me before even saying a word was the neighbor Herb. The
moment he came on screen, you could tell that there was something different about him. The first
thing you see when Herb enters on screen is an armful of crime magazines. It automatically sets the
audience s focus on Herb, putting all other characters aside, and attend to mainly on his character at
the present time. What makes him so fascinating? Is it the rimmed glasses? The soft timid voice? His
lack of physical presence? Personally, when I saw Herb enter, I thought immediately that he was going
to hold some significant role later on in the film, But as the film progresses, you realize that Herb is
just what he appears to be: a quiet good natured man who is fascinated with murder, and holds little
importance to the main story line. Or does he?
Hitchcock uses minor characters and applies them at certain

4. Watership Down Power Quotes
Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength,
mastering yourself is true power, says Lao Tzu. The rabbits in Watership Down that are aspiring
leaders deal with a constant battle that relates perfectly to Lao Tzu s quote. Some gain power through
their stature, others through their wit, but the truly effective leaders use the ideal attributes both from
themselves and the rabbits they are leading. The desire for power in this novel is exhibited through
aspiring leaders that lead in their own best interest and those who lead in the best interest of their

When Fiver, Hazel s younger brother, has a vision about the warren being attacked, he immediately
sets out to tell Threarah. After Fiver and Hazel finally reach the distanced Threarah, he ignores them.
Threarah scolds them for interrupting his sleep and his patience. This decision is important in
displaying the desire for power in Threarah; he knows that if he listens to Fiver he could lose
everything. The task of moving the entire warren would not only take mounds of time and effort, but
the decision would also be Threarah s. This means that if the move was a bad decision he could
possibly lose his power. Threarah is willing to risk the lives of his entire warren to safely retain power;
he is so caught up in being power hungry that Fiver s vision eventually becomes true and the whole
warren is killed. As our first example of a power crazy leader, this quickly shows the reader the social
hierarchy of the rabbits as well as the extent they re willing to do to maintain it. The next chief rabbit
that leads in his own interest is Woundwort, chief rabbit of the Efrafa warren. After having both of his
parents killed at an early age, Woundwort constructed this warren to stay under the radar from any
human contact. Woundwort is a classic tyrannical leader; he is

5. Between The World And Me, Reservation Blues Analysis
However, the actual school system was also a problem for Coates. When describing his dilemma
between street skills and education, he says: If the streets shackled up [his] right leg, the schools
shackled up [his] left. Fail to comprehend the streets and you gave up your body now. But fail to
comprehend the school and you gave up your body later (Coates 25). The way in which Coates
describes the shackle and giving up one s body creates a prison like connotation for school. He
emphasizes on the necessity of balancing one s schooling with education of the streets in order to
survive. In fact, Coates explains how There was nothing sanctified about the laws of the streets...But
the laws of the schools were aimed at something distant and vague (Coates 25). As schools have to
cater to the needs of all of its students, this restricted education inevitably creates a generalized and
vague curriculum aimed at the middle class. In order to combat this insipidity, schools ... Show more

7. Romanticism In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein
Mary Shelley s Frankenstein
INTRO: While the Age of Enlightenment emphasized reason and knowledge, the following literary
period from 1800 to 1850 known as Romanticism was characterized by creativity, emotion and
relationships. Mary Shelley s novel Frankenstein, written in 1818, exemplifies this style of literature in
its use of imagery, tone and symbolism. By implementing a writing technique known as frame
narrative, a perspective is presented as a story within a story within another story, etc. In this particular
book, the reader is introduced to an explorer named Robert Walton, whose letters begin as first person
narration, which transition into the viewpoints of the other main characters in Frankenstein. On his
voyage to the North Pole, Walton writes letters to his sister in England that explain his encounter with
a scientist named Victor Frankenstein, who in turn tells his story of how he created a monster.
Frankenstein s creation then narrates and defends the life unwillingly thrust upon him. Finally, a group
known as the cottagers offer a different perspective of the entire matter, which primarily focuses on
the creation s interactions with society.

compared to Frankenstein s monster s self described fallen angel, which is essentially the adversary
and antagonist of its creator. The same holds true for the Shelley s subtitle the Modern Prometheus,

8. Freedom Of Religion Is The First Amendment In The Bill Of...
Freedom of religion or freedom of belief is a principle that supports the freedom of an individual or
community, in public or private, to manifest religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship, and
observance. It also includes the freedom to change one s religion or belief. Freedom of religion is
considered an essential human right. In a country with an established religion, freedom of religion
generally means that the government allows religious practices besides the established religion, and
does not persecute you if you are not that religion. Freedom of Religion is the First Amendment in the
Bill of Rights. It allows us to think and express what we believe. But, around the world and in the
United States, this freedom is eroding. Churches, religious organizations, and individuals face more
and more restrictions as they express their beliefs or serve in society. Religious freedom is important
to a diverse society or community. It allows different faiths and beliefs to grow and spread. Religious
freedom protects the rights of all individuals, whether they are religious or not. Religion has an
important spot in society. To spread its positive message, a religious group needs physical, social, and
legal space to practice. All lawful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

One of the major challenges that cardiac tissue engineering should cope with it effectively, is the
generation of a thick vascularizable, cardia tissue to diffuse oxygen beyond the limited distance

optimize amount of decellularization agents related to tissue types, age, and sex is critical to determine
successful recellularization and remodeling of the engineered heart [47]. Obviously, the perfusion

Therefore, an optimal recellularization methods would be at the forefront of diminishing thrombosis in

11. Theme Of Criminality In Treasure Island
Treasure Island is a novel written by Robert Louis Stevenson, and directed by Byron Haskin in the
movie Treasure Island (1950), the themes of Criminality and Exploration are evident throughout the
book. Throughout this essay, I shall discuss about the importance of both themes and how they
represented through the story of Treasure Island . The theme of Criminality is shown throughout the
book when Billy Bones (the Captain) and Long John Silver (the antagonist) receives the Black Spot,
which symbolises the official verdict or judgement of one s crime. It consists of a round piece of paper
or card, with a black spot on one side, and the other conveys a message delivered to the accused. The
reason why pirates are so afraid of legal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This also shows when they finally receive the treasure, but then instantly realize the number of lives, it
had taken just to get hands on it. On account of the crime and punishments visible through the story,
the theme of criminality is evident right throughout the story. The theme of Exploration is shown
throughout the novel when Jim and his allies successively received the map, since it shows the needs
of exploration to receive the treasure, while also transforming Jim from an ordinary child to a sailor
and a hero. However, the map also symbolises the vanity of desire. Each and every person wants the
map and seems willing to go to preposterous ends to grab the map. Ironically, Stevenson sooner or
later shows us that the map was useless from start to end, thanks to Ben Gunn excavating the treasure
to another place, which in turn, puts the most recent possessor (Silver) not into a final delight, but into
a significant frustration. This also symbolises the futility of hunting for reward. And thereupon we all
entered the cave. It was a large, airy place, with a little spring and a pool of clear water, overhung with
ferns. The floor was sand. Before

Liz Bayram the Chief Executive at the Professional Association of Childcare and Early Years
(PACEY), wrote an article for the Telegraph news paper dated September 4th 2014 entitled Parents

early years. Beginning school is a major life transition for children and their families with some
children taking this transition in their stride, yet others seeing it as a period of anxiety, uncertainty and
confusion. In order to discuss the challenges faced by children starting education it is important to
examine the emotional and social issues, how attachment impacts upon readiness for education, how
resilience to risks experienced may affect coping with starting school and communication during

60% of patients with epilepsy who are seizure free for a minimum of 2 years. Taking their pills at a
specific time each day is essential to their health because it can help them have a better life and be
seizure free. Next, it is important for the caregiver to protect the patient from injury during a seizure
episode. This protection will help to ensure that the person having the seizure will fall and be guided
gently to the floor. It is essential to move anything that might cause further injury to the person during
the seizure. If the patient is already on the floor, do not try to hold the person down or move the
person because that can cause further injuries. Turning the patient on their side during a seizure will
help keep their airway clear of any fluids that they may produce during the seizure. After a seizure
episode, the aide will check to see if the person has any injuries or if the person is having trouble
breathing. If there is an obstruction in the airway they can use their fingers to clear the mouth of vomit

15. Christopher Mccandles s Applied Human Development In...
While reading Into the Wild several aspects of Christopher McCandles development and lived
experiences can be applied to the topics that were examined in Applied Child Development. In
particular, the themes of scarcity, parental involvement, distancing, and the culture of affluence are
extremely salient in discussing Christopher McCandles experiences.
Scarcity
Feinberg introduces scarcity as the concept of having an inadequate supply of a certain need that is
crucial to the development of the individual (Feingberg, 2015). For example, an individual can
experience scarcity in money, space, time, love or support, and housing which all have an effect over
time on their interactions with systems around them (APSY 418, 7/5.2017). Christopher experiences
scarcity both through his own choices and as a result of the relationship that he had with those around
him. For example, in his relationship with his father Christopher experiences a scarcity of affection
and nurturing that would have softened the impact of his father parenting style and demand for
perfection. This lack of emotional support, despite the presence of basic needs, cause Christopher to
develop a lack of attachment to his father and made it easier for him to break off from his family later
in his life. On the other hand, Christopher chooses to experience a scarcity of money, shelter, and other
basic necessities when he leaves civilization and tries to survive in the wilderness. the lack of human

17. Consumerism In Willy Mink
The most extreme form of submission to the new order of society, centered around objects and waves
and radiation (DeLillo 1) is Mink, who represents the epitome of consumerism culture. The
description of Mink by Lentricchia on page 113 covers the descriptions of the novel perfectly. Sitting
in front of the TV, throwing fistfuls of Dylar at his mouth, babbling, Willy Mink is a compacted image
of consumerism in the society of electronic media, a figure of madness, but our figure of madness. At
the same time the author reveals an additional fact about DeLillo s piece, specifically that it is relevant
to our day and age and not a science fiction novel, but rather a cutting depiction of contemporary life.
The next analysis stems from the scene in which Jack attempts to kill Mink for providing his wife with
an unapproved substance called Dylar and having an affair with her. ... Show more content on

Dominating and (almost) destroying a man who simply isn t there, or whose own self is thoroughly
dispersed by chemical media, transnational migration, leaves Jack s monstrously meaningful

tendencies is the transformation of person into intangible data waves, thus not only embracing media
culture, but being a medium of it. As Jack describes it, He was watching TV without the sound.
(DeLillo 305) The sound is transported from or through Mink as opposed to the television blaring it
out, which shows his deep involvement with the television. He also cannot be described by Jack,
which means that he is of another species essentially, no longer earthly, but rather a superiority. Also,
by the fact that Jack is unable to murder him and Mink s deep involvement, DeLillo points out the

expensive properties you would have to have very rapid sales or you would have to sell at a price
which would be sacrificing desired returns. While it is hard to generalize, as every transaction is

the property is located. EX. if we purchase a property for $100,000 and the assessed value is $30,000,

21. In The Garden Of Beast Summary
Book Review: In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson
Larson, Erik. In the garden of beasts: love, terror, and an American family in Hitlers Berlin. 375
pages. New York: Crown Publishing Group, 2011.
Erik Larson is a known journalist who writes non fiction historical books. He graduated from the
University of Pennsylvania, where he studied Russian history. He further attended Columbia
University, where he received a master s in journalism. He worked for The Wall Street Journal, and
later contributed to Time Magazine. He has also written for The Atlantic, Harper s, and The New
Yorker. Larson s research for his work is known to be dense. Aside from researching primary sources,
Larson is known to immerse himself in the atmosphere he is writing about. For example, while he was
writing In the Garden of Beast, Larson traveled to Germany and became part of the history that he was
writing about. He has stated in numerous accounts that he does his own research, not only because he
believes it is the most enjoyable part of his job, but also because he believes that if he is writing about
history, he should personally interpret it.
Larson s In the Garden of Beasts is written about the experience that William E. Dodd encounter
during Hitler s regime. Dodd became the first ambassador to Hitler s Germany in a year that proved to
be the turning point in the relationship between the World and Germany. As Larson states in his book,
William Dodd was not the first choice of FDR. Dodd had no

The Role of Science, Ethics, and Faith in Modern Philosophy
ABSTRACT: Curiously, in the late twentieth century, even agnostic cosmologists like Stephen
Hawking who is often compared with Einstein pose metascientific questions concerning a Creator and
the cosmos, which science per se is unable to answer. Modern science of the brain, e.g. Roger Penrose
s Shadows of the Mind (1994), is only beginning to explore the relationship between the brain and the
mind the physiological and the epistemic. Galileo thought that God s two books Nature and the Word
cannot be in conflict, since both have a common author: God. This entails, inter alia, that science and
faith are to two roads to the Creator God. David Granby recalls that once upon a time, ... Show more

Paradoxically, the third model, which argues for a fusion or unity of science and theology has
naturalistic as well as theistic proponents. For naturalists like Willem B. Drees, personal experiences,
including religious experiences and consciousness, are all part and parcel of nature (1996: 245).
Hence, Drees concludes that the distinction between personal and impersonal relations provides no
basis for distinguishing supernatural and natural phenomena (1996: 245). Naturalists like Drees, then,
consider religious beliefs and moral codes as products of evolution or natural processes alone, which
leave no room for a Creator, let alone a transcendent God.
In contrast, theists like Phillip E. Johnson and Alvin Plantinga criticize the prevailing scientific
paradigm in the natural sciences for excluding questions concerning design, purpose, value, First
Principles, and ultimately the Creator God. According to Johnson, the scientific method or
methodological naturalism leads imperceptibly to, and buttresses, metaphysical naturalism that
excludes the transcendent and God. For Johnson, this reductionist methodology has impoverished
science and led to a corrosive moral/ethical relativism affecting social theory, law, and practice, since
naturalistic metaphysics leads inexorably to relativism in ethics and politics, even though many
naturalists dislike relativism and try hard

The first European known to have landed in Wisconsin was Jean Nicolet. In 1634, Samuel de

between them and the Huron and expand the fur trade, and possibly to also find a water route to Asia.
Accompanied by seven Huron guides, Nicolet left New France and canoed through Lake Huron and
Lake Superior, and then became the first European known to have entered Lake Michigan. Nicolet
proceeded into Green Bay, which he named La Baie des Puants (literally The Stinking Bay ), and
probably came ashore near the Red Banks. He made contact with the Ho Chunk and Menomenee

24. Eastern Variations Of Cinderella
Folk tale is a valuable fortune of human beings, giving readers a closer exposure to cultures all over
the world. One of the most popular folk tale is Cinderella a story about a good girl facing persecution
of her cruel stepmother and sister. Almost all Cinderella versions in the world share the same themes
and motifs but the function of plots and motifs might perform differently in distinctive local cultural
contexts. Two Eastern variations of Cinderella Tam Cam and Neang Angkat in Vietnam and Cambodia
respectively are typical examples. The two stories are similar in terms of theme, motif of magical help
and presence of Buddhist beliefs. However, regarding the specific reincarnation, supernatural power

First of all, though both having been influenced by Buddhism, the reincarnations of main characters in
the two stories are somehow different because they are also affected by other ideologies and cultures.
In Vietnamese Tam Cam, Tam undergo four times of reincarnation (a nightingale, a white cedar tree, a
wooden loom and a persimmon fruit) whereas in Neang Angkat, the girl reborns two times. The
reincarnation process of Tam is linked with Confucian ideology of female virtues and behaviour. For
instance, her transformation from a persimmon fruit into a human shape to do the housework and cook
for the old woman represents the virtue of skillful of work, which is one of four Confucian virtues that
Vietnamese women need to obtain (Bui, 2009). Differently, two forms of reincarnation in Cambodian
Cinderella a banana tree and a grove of bamboo only describe two symbolic images of this eastern
country. Another difference is the supernatural power. Whereas the Bụt in Tam Cam stands for the
Buddha, the Spirit of Virtue in Cambodia s Neang Angkat is said to be stand in for her dead mother
(Bettelheim, 1974). The Bụt is a religious image, appearing in many other folk lores in Vietnam and
willing to help whoever encounter difficulties while the Spirit of Virtue in Neang Angkat is just a
symbol of motherhood. It is the strong and eternal love of the dead mother that helps Angkat

25. Single Gender Schools
Many people believe that single gender schools have no positive effect on students, research shows
otherwise. In single gender schools there is less drama, it helps preserve culture, there are less
stereotypes, and test scores and confidence levels rise. Single gender schools have many positive
impacts, and they help students prepare for the future.
For starters there is less drama at an all girls school. Since there aren t any guys on campus, you aren t
gonna be jealous of a couple at school. Another reason there is less drama is that you aren t vying for
the guys attention. This also leads to more modesty. Loran Wilbur , who went to an all girls school
said, There was a lot less pressure for appearance at Wellesley. Girls usually just wore sweat pants and
a t shirt. Lastly you don t have to worry about how a guys gonna treat you because of how you look. A
lot of drama is based on relationships and attractions. Remove the opposite gender from the equation
and you have lessened the problem drastically.
Next off single gender schools help preserve many different cultures. In the Islamic or Muslim culture
the co ed schools are promoting illicit relationships, teenage pregnancies, dating, girlfriend boyfriend
culture, extravagance where both sexes throw their parents hard earned money on materialism and
luxurious items to attract the opposite sex (http://defence.pk/threads/co education spreading

27. Why is Hubel and Wiesel s Description of the Classical...
The ultimate goal for a system of visual perception is representing visual scenes. It is generally
assumed that this requires an initial break down of complex visual stimuli into some kind of discrete
subunits (De Valois De Valois, 1980, p.316) which can then be passed on and further processed by the
brain. The task thus arises of identifying these subunits as well as the means by which the visual
system interprets and processes sensory input. An approach to visual scene analysis that prevailed for
many years was that of individual cortical cells being feature detectors with particular response
criteria. Though not self proclaimed, Hubel and Wiesel s theory of a hierarchical visual system
employs a form of such feature detectors. I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Applying this notion to mammalian vision is however problematic; humans for example, are capable
of visually perceiving greater detail and variety than a frog and would thus require considerably more
of these uniquely coded feature detectors. The notion of a grandmother cell was thus introduced to
highlight the entailment of such a theory; if every unique stimulus requires its own feature detector
cell, an absurdly high number of neurons would be required for humans to represent the vast variety of
visual scenes encountered in a lifetime.
Aware of this shortcoming, Hubel and Wiesel (1962,1965,1968) were cautious not refer to feature
detectors when examining the receptive fields of the mammalian visual cortex of live cats (Hubel
Wiesel, 1962) and monkeys (Hubel Wiesel, 1968). Nonetheless, it is now widely accepted that Hubel
and Wiesel s theory of simple, complex and hyper complex cells remains a form of the original feature
detector theory, albeit formulated into a more economical hierarchical structure. (Lennie, 2003;
Martin, 1994) Hubel and Wiesel (962, 1965) concluded that vision involved a hierarchical process
starting in the retina, continuing through the lateral geniculate body, the primary visual cortex and
possibly even into areas V2 and V3. As sensory information travels further up the hierarchy, it passes
through progressively higher order cells that become increasingly

in Northern California before Colorado not too long ago, and it didn t seem to be talked about over
there, as they haven t implemented TABOR. I decided to read up on it to gain a greater perspective of
what the Taxpayer Bill of Rights entails.
The first concept that I learned about was that under TABOR in Colorado, taxpayers would now be
able to vote before taxes were raised by local and state governments. The voters must approve the tax
raise. In addition to that concept, the revenues that had previously been collected as a result of prior
tax rates were not to be spent without tax payer approval, should those rates have increased quicker

while TABOR isn t perfected, there have been improvements made within the Colorado economy
since tabor. This conclusion was made after comparing the Colorado economy 10 years before
TABOR had been introduced in 1992 to the Colorado economy 10 years after TABOR was

Uterine fibroids are very common, causing symptoms in about 25 percent of women. Fibroids are
benign, or noncancerous, tumors that grow in the walls of the uterus. It s not understood why fibroids
develop, but scientists and doctors believe that genetics may play a role.
There are several factors that put women at a greater risk for developing fibroids. These factors
include:
Age: Most women who get fibroids are between the ages 18 and 45. In African Americans, fibroids
are often found at an earlier age. After menopause, fibroids typically shrink.
Nulliparity: Women who have never been pregnant, or haven t carried a pregnancy past 20 weeks, are
at a higher risk of developing the growths.
Family History: Women with family members that have had fibroids are at an increased likelihood of
developing them. Some research shows that if a woman s mother had fibroids, she is three times as
likely to develop them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Weight: Women who are overweight are at a high risk for developing the growths. For very obese
women, the likelihood of fibroids is two to three times greater.

who are diagnosed with fibroids, however, do have one of the following 10 symptoms.
1. Heavy Vaginal Bleeding
Women with fibroids may have very heavy bleeding during their menstrual periods or may bleed in

meringue topping Meringue making sends many otherwise good bakers into a tailspin when their lus
trous topping weeps (beads of liquid sugar rise to the surface) and deflates into a shriveled version of
its initial glory. Here is a meringue that holds its shape and stays fluffy without weeping. The step of
warming the egg whites and dissolving the sugar which takes just a few seconds before beating the
meringue is its key to success. I like a generous topping, so this amount will cover any 9 inch pie in a
thick, billowy layer. You will need an electric mixer to make it. Makes meringue topping for one 9
inch pie ⅔ cup egg whites (about 5 eggs)
½ cup sugar
½ teaspoon cream of tartar
¼ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon vanilla extract Combine the egg whites and sugar in a large stainless steel or glass bowl. (I
don t recommending using a plastic bowl; it can hold a greasy film that will keep the whites from
beating to full volume.) Set the bottom of the bowl over a pan of sim mering not boiling water. Stir
gently for a minute or two, using a spoon or your finger, until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture
feels warm. Remove the bowl from the water and add the cream of tartar and salt. Beat at high speed
until the whites stand in stiff peaks that droop just slightly when the beater is lifted. De pending on the
power and speed of your mixer, this will take 1½ to 3 minutes, more or less, but appearance is a better
indicator than time. Beat in the vanilla.

Miscommunication between the dietitian and patient can lead to key problems for treatment of health.

that maybe we haven t addressed the problem completely. They both show us difficult relationships,
with all the blame usually being put on the woman even if she had done nothing wrong.
Section 1 instantaneously judging
The authors are both male, and therefore may find it easier to relate to the male characters, however
coming from two different time perspectives their representation and vision of women is surprisingly
similar. The main similarity being the theme of women being instantaneously judged by the male
characters, without even getting to know them. A quote from of mice and men to support this is: don t
you dare take a look at that bitch, i dont care what she says and what she does. I seen em poison
before, but i never seen no piece of jail bait worse than her (page 54). In this quote george is warning
lennie of Curley s wife. We see sexism here because not only is george calling her a bitch , a
derogatory term to call a female, he is also assuming that because she comes across as a flirt she is a
woman who will get men into

40. Reflection Of A Discourse Community
Introduction
Paul Ryan once said, Every successful individual knows that his or her achievement depends on a
community of persons working together. We do not often realize how important it is for everybody to
work together to achieve a goal. A community is a group of individual people gathered together to
form a whole, like a school, local church, government entity, non profit organization, sport team, etc.
This whole can make reference to a discourse community.
According to John Swales, discourse communities are unions where individuals have a common
purpose, and communicate to achieve this. There are six characteristics that make up a discourse
community. They are a set of common public goals, mechanisms of communication among its ...

Literature Review
In the article, The Concept of Discourse Community, John Swales defines what a discourse
community is, and yet, he strongly argues that a discourse community must meet six specific
characteristics. A social group must have a set of common goals, methods of intercommunication
between its members, feedback, the usage of genres, a determined lexis, and a rank that defines the
level of expertise each member has.
With that being said, Swales highlights the need of a clarification of what differs a discourse
community from a speech community. In Erik s Borg (2003) article, Discourse community , the
concept of a speech community refers to actual people who recognize their language use as different
from other language users. (p.398) Additionally, Swales states that discourse communities recruits its
members by persuasion, training, or relevant qualification and speech communities recruits its
[members] by birth, accident or adoption . Even though speech communities do share similar
linguistic rules among its members, norms, and theories, they do not share common a common goal.
They lack communication among its members, and lastly, they do not accomplish the utilization of
genres like a discourse community does.
Moreover, it is established that genres are how things get done, when language is used to accomplish
them (Martin, 1985). Swales (1990) indicates that discourse

41. Regeneration in Public Housing Essay
Australia s public housing is not adequately providing safe and secure housing for the disadvantaged
and needy. This paper will demonstrate the issues that arise from the poorly planned public housing
developments, particularly the issues concerning spatial concentration of commission homes in low
socio economic areas. Australian government agencies are currently exploring solutions to the
problems caused by public housing estates, developed primarily following World War II to address the
shortage of housing. These homes built around the period of 1940 1960 have created stressed suburbs
(National Archives of Australia, 2011). The physical problems of aged infrastructure and inadequately
designed housing reflect only part of the issues ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This paper suggests reforms for developments to incorporate broader selections of estates that will be
helped, which also should include low cost private rental areas. Moreover, it demonstrates the need for
urgent media attention on this issue to generate more funding towards these projects. Concentrated
Public Housing Concerns Research has shown that there is a cycle of negative effects that result from
highly concentrated public housing which further impacts on disadvantaged tenants (Baum et al.,
1999). Within this research, those residing in public housing estates and areas of concentrated low
income private rental housing were identified as the most disadvantaged, in terms of employment,
income levels and education opportunities ( Arthurson, 2008, p. 1). Public policy in the field of
housing needs to address the balance of social mix within older public housing estates to prevent this
continuous cycle. In the urban studies literature, this concept is variously referred to as social mix ,
tenure mix or residential mix (Athurson, 2002, p. 22). Housing tenants from areas of high
concentrations of social housing are perceived as having significant associations, whether rightly or
wrongly, with a range of issues including antisocial behaviour, crime, welfare dependency and
depictions of a socially excluded underclass (Arthurson, 2005). To remedy some of these issues, the
housing authorities have implemented various regeneration policies to

43. The Mantled Howler Monkeys
Howler monkeys are infamous for their extremely loud calls that can be heard from several kilometers
away. Alouatta palliate, otherwise commonly known as the mantled howler monkey, is one of the most
studied howler monkey species. The mantled howler monkey taxonomy shows that it falls under the
Haplorhini suborder and the Plattyrhine (New World Monkey) infraorder. It then falls under the
Atelidae family and the Alouatta genus. The mantled howler monkey can be separated easily from
other howler monkey species in the Alouatta genus by its coloration and the long guard hairs located
on its sides, for which it received its species common name mantled (Henderson, 2000). There are
three recognized subspecies of Alouatta palliate (Rylands et al., ... Show more content on

This is supported by the fact that there is both a high level of ecological competition and high
dispersal rates (Jones, 1980). As mentioned previously, when reaching sexual maturity male and
female both generally disperse from their natal groups (Campbell and Di Fiore, 2005). A consequence
of this is that most social groups are composed of non related individuals. There have been few studies
done to better understand the reasons for this phenomenon. This phenomenon could be observed for
several reasons that are commonly found in other primate species. Dispersal of females is likely due to
avoid the harm of inbreeding within the group. Also, the dispersal of males is likely due the search of
better mate finding opportunities in other groups. Besides these two more classical theories there is
one other theory that might better explain dispersal of both sexes. Glander (1992) proposes that
competition against a less related individual for the role of the alpha position would be more favorable
than competition between a closely related kin. Unlike the other two hypotheses, this hypothesis has
been supported by data that members are more likely to survive when they join a group with no
closely related kin. If we followed the inclusive fitness theory we would expect to see that older
members of the group would disperse,
