Slavery In The Old South
This historical analysis will define the argument put forth by James Oakes (1998) about the misguided
view of slavery as a paternalistic system of economics in the Old South. The paternalistic/honorific
view of slavery is incorrect because of the underlying system of capitalism, which allowed
slaveholders to exploit, commercialize, and commoditize slaves for profit. More so, Oakes (1998)
shows how the industrial Northern was simply a different form of capitalism that often cooperated
with the agrarian South in exploiting slaves as a method of low cost labor. Machine technology
allowed northerner manufacturers to exploit low wage laborers in industry, yet the South relied
heavily on the exploitation of slaves for agrarian production. Oakes ... Show more content on

The only conflict between the two capitalist systems was the outdated methods of human labor that
the South relied upon to compete with the increasingly industrialized methods of farming that the
north was using as they expanded into western territories. Oakes (1998) defines the capitalist system
as the driving force for economic conflicts between these two regions of the United States: Having
repudiated the suggestion that all poor people in America ought to be enslaved, conservatives argued
instead that slavery, as practiced in the South, represented the fulfillment of destiny (Oakes, 1998, p.
215). This economic view of low cost labor defines how Oakes (1998) understands the underlying
profitability of a capitalistic system, which temporarily sustained a cooperative relationship between
the North and South. The difference between these two societies was the method in which low cost
labor could be exploited through wage slavery in the North and outright slavery in the South. The
roots of capitalism are also found in the willingness of colonial slaveholders to join the American
Revolution because it would free them from the exploitative bonds of British capitalism that hindered
their ascension to greater wealth as land owners and slave holders: Colonial slaveholders had
enthusiastically joined the Revolution against Britain: most saw no conflict between its libertarian
principles and the perpetuation of slavery (Oakes, 1998, p.241). These are important aspects of the
underlying profitability of slavery in the capitalistic system of economics, which often overrode the
principles in favor of gaining access to low cost slave labor during the antebellum era. In this manner,
the capitalistic

The Influence Of The Renaissance Witch Hunts
Renaissance Witch Hunts The witch hunts took place during the 1450 s to the 1750 s, most notably in
England and Salem, Massachusetts. They also took place in Italy and other smaller places in the
United States. women were always witches, almost never men and there were a ridiculous amount of
things that would accuse you of being a witch. If you wore black, you were a witch. If you enjoyed
reading, you were a witch. If you had a mole/birthmark, you were a witch. The reasons go on and on
but I won t bore you with that.
What is witchcraft/witches Witch craft is defined as a form of sorcery and often portrayed as a sign of
the devil, the practice of magic, especially black magic; the use of spells and the invocation of spirits,
according to the dictionary. Unfortunately, this is not a concrete answer because the definition would
imply this being a bad thing. The existence of glinda the good witch contradicts this statement. Also
the wicca religion makes the definition a little questionable because they don t necessarily practice
witchcraft with evil intent. They do match up with the things that would make you a witch,
(Connecting with nature and other things) they don t match the stereotypical look of a witch with the
large and deformed nose, pointed hat and broom flying abilities. We don t have a clear cut idea for
what witchcraft is but, we have a general idea as to what it is.
As to what witches are, they are people who practice/is accused of practicing witchcraft and

Summary Of Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets
The book I read was Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, written by J.K. Rowling. The story
takes place at Hogwarts, a school of witchcraft and wizardry. Harry Potter is a student at Hogwarts,
and Ron and Hermione are his best friends. The main focus was a secret chamber hidden in the school,
that has been opened and was opened years before. There were attacks on the students by a basilisk
snake, which was put there by an evil wizard named Voldemort. Harry, Ron, and Hermione kept
searching for clues to find out how the attacks were happening until they were lead right to the answer.
Over all, the book was a good story and was very exciting and creative. The story begins when Dobby,
a small house elf, warns Harry about something bad in Hogwarts. Something bad did happen. It was
the chamber. It was being opened and attacks were coming from it. Harry was trying to figure out who
was planning the attacks, what was in the chamber, and who opened it. Harry, Hermione, and Ron
made assumptions about who opened it before, and tried to figure out who it was by making potions,
spying, and talking to different people about it. They often met in the girls prefects bathroom to talk.
Once when they were in there making a potion to get ideas out of people, they came across a magical
diary by a person named Tom Riddle. Harry figured out how to work the magic diary and was told that
his friend Poole2 and the professor of magical creatures, Hagrid opened the chamber before, but the

The article I choose was The Division of Labor in Lesbian, Gay, and Heterosexual New Adoptive
Parents written by Goldberg, A.E., Smith, J.Z, Perry. The article explains the benefits of same sex
marriage becoming adoptive parents. There actually a better result for the kids in this setting. The kids
will grow with a different idea of gender roles growing up and have better profitable future. The
author concludes that parents with same sex can share the housework and child care than relating to
sexual orientation. We also found that lesbian and gay male couples had paid labor patterns, in which
expected gender differences did not come too. For heterosexual couples, women were more common
to become the primary caregivers and in charge of the house work. Sexual orientation and gender roles

Creative Expression in Hunduism Essay
Creative expression in Hinduism is often incorporated through rituals and daily tasks. Hindu women
have the opportunity to express themselves creatively through the daily creation of kolams, also
known as Rangoli. Kolams are intricate drawings that serve as a proclamation to the world of various
meanings, and also a unique form of communication, dependent on their design. These kolams can
express many meanings such as announcing that their home is welcome to others, announce special
events, worship deities, and celebrate festivals.
Every morning, the woman of the household designs a new kolam pattern outside the front of their
door. The women first sweep their thresholds, sprinkle them with a solution of cow dung and water
and cover the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The presence or absence of the kolam on the front stoop is equivalent to announcing that a household
is open or closed to the world, a cultural category that sends off a capacious sense of hospitableness or
hospitality, specifically, the willingness and ability to feed stranger, (Pintchman, 88). This can be
interpreted as the idea that the family has a surplus of food and is willing to help people in the
community who need it. This means if there were someone wandering the streets: a community
member, visitor, or stranger, they would read this kolam as a very strong encouraging sign that they
might be able to receive a bowl of hot food or other hospitality from this family.
Another way that kolams can be used is to announce special events for a household, such as births,
deaths, or menstruation cycles. In some households, when a child is born, special elaborate designs
may be made for the kolam of that day, to announce the child s birth. Certain symbols and figures
would be used to indicate that it was the birth of a child. In other castes and parts of India, the birth of
a child may not be announced through the design of a special kolam. (Pintchman, 89) This is one of
the instances that vary if it is announced by kolam or not. If there is a death in the family, usually there
is an absence of a kolam. The same goes for if the woman of the house is menstruating. It can also be
a way of presenting that it is the first

Should Pluto Be Considered A Planet Essay
Many may urge that Pluto should be considered a planet for it has similar characteristics as the planets
of the Solar System; however, others still believe that Pluto should not be considered a planet because
of its slight differences and conditions that are not matched.
Pluto is recognised by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) as a dwarf planet for it doesn t
match the third condition of what defines a planet. IAU proposed three conditions to becoming a
planet. The first condition being: (a) is in orbit around the Sun; the second condition being: (b) has
sufficient mass for its self gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic
equilibrium (nearly round) shape; the third condition, in which Pluto has not met the standards to,
being:(c) has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit. Pluto doesn t meet the standards to the final
condition as Pluto follows the orbit path of some asteroid like objects in space and are surrounded
with these objects. If people were to ignore the third condition and recognise Pluto ... Show more

Reporters with interest in Pluto have published many articles related to the matter of whether Pluto
should be considered a planet. Many are opposing the opinion that Pluto should not be considered a
planet as the third condition is very vague. For instance, the Earth s neighbourhood could be
considered as not cleared out as the moon is following it around; Jupiter is continuously having
contact with asteroids named Trojans, and Neptune s orbit crosses over with Pluto s orbit. The
Guardian stated in one of it s articles that Pluto should not have a ban from being a planet due to its
small size. IAU, however, has not made any regards on this criticism. These opposing views about
Pluto may be correct in a way; however, factually speaking, Pluto is still not considered as a planet as
IAU has not made any changes towards its definition of the word,

Psychological Issues In The Graduate
One of my favorite movies is The Graduate released in 1967 and based on the 1963 novel The
Graduate by Charles Webb. It is regarded as a classic and shows a lot of psychological issues of the
60s brought on by social norms. An older neglected housewife named Mrs. Robinson seduces a recent
21 year old graduate, Benjamin Braddock.. During the 40s until the 70s, because of mother s strong
involvement in their children s life, many children never learned to take care of themselves. Benjamin
is a clear consequence of that as he spends his summer lying in the pool all day. Mrs. Robinson is
herself a victim of her time. She admits to Benjamin that she is in a loveless, boring marriage and lost
her youth because she got pregnant with her daughter Elaine

Legality Ethicality of Financial Accounting
Legality and Ethicality of Financial Reporting Accounting professionals consider standard practices of
accounting and board of accountancy rules when creating ethical standards. Accountants also consider
state and federal laws. Ethics and the law works hand in hand therefore should be on the minds of
those considering the commission of fraud. The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Excello, Terry Reed,
was considering doing such by posting a $2.1 million transaction to raise year end earnings. Terry
Reed, CFO of Excello, committed the unethical practices in this case. Reed had considered the $2.1
million transaction to collect the earnings from a sale that was not to occur until January 2011. By
posting the transaction in December 2010, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of three things can happen in the Excello case. First, Reed may transfer the merchandise to an off
site location and record the sale at the end of 2010 because there is no violation of Excello s shipping
rules and GAAP standards (Mintz, 2011). Second, Reed can transfer the merchandise to the customer
and promise a refund to the customer s account after 2010 report filing (Mintz, 2011). Like the first,
this option is also unethical. Besides manipulating the financial reports, these choices post a risk for
Excello that the sale may never fruition. Both options allow the customer to return the goods after
Excello posts the revenue, thus violating the GAAP s revenue recognition principle. Third, Excello
could offer the customer a 10% discount to purchase the merchandise before December 31, 2010. This
option being the most ethical decision because no fraudulent activity occurs. The employees who are
acting unethically in this case are Terry Reed, CFO, and Marty Fuller, controller of Excello. Fuller is
covering the bases by calling meetings with the accounting staff and requesting that the merchandise
sell and post according to the GAAP standards. Fuller is being unethical by trying to get around the
GAAP and AICPA codes. Reed is unethical because he requests the accounting department to find
ways around the rules to increase the 2010 earnings by posting a sales transaction before the revenue

Strange Fruit Controversy
Following our nation s reconstruction, racist sentiments continued to occur and White on Black
violence was prevalent throughout society. The horrible act of lynching African Americans was
thoroughly widespread in the United States, particularly in the South. It is said that approximately
4,742 individuals were lynched between 1882 and 1968; of the victims, 3,445 or seventy three percent
were African American (Perloff 315). An image of two lynched young men inspired Abel Meeropol to
create the poem, Strange Fruit, later converted into a song by Billie Holiday. On August 7, 1930 in
Marion County, Indiana, three young African American men, Thomas Shipp, Abram Smith, and James
Cameron were charged with the murder of a white man and the rape ... Show more content on

The lyrics paint a picture that most would want to turn away from. He uses vivid imagery by referring
to the black bodies in the beginning of the song by stating that southern trees bear a strange fruit (1).
Fruit is usually sweet and appealing however, in this case, Meeropol uses the fruit as a metaphor to
describe the bodies hanging from the trees giving the lyrics tremendous significance. Also, in the first
stanza, Meeropol says blood on the leaves and blood on the root (2) to signify that the guilt of the
white people forever remains on the southern trees. This line is powerful because Abel Meeropol is
outwardly deploring the South for lynching. At this time, there had been no other African American
who had spoken out against racists and White on Black violence, making Strange Fruit such an
important touchstone. Meeropol shows the extent of racism by

Mexican American Sociological Perspective
I will be applying the three major sociological perspectives, which include functionalism, conflict
theory, and symbolic interactionism to the experiences of Hispanic Americans. No ethnic group
attracts more public attention than the Hispanic people do due to their large numbers, their residential
clustering, and bilingual programs and signs associated with them making them a recognizable ethnic
group. Hispanic people who live in poverty or the small number involved in gangs, drugs, or other
criminal activity get more attention and generate negative stereotypes, but most of them live as
members of the middle class. Functionalist Perspective: Hispanic Americans are increasing at a rapid

He mentions that Hispanics have higher median earnings than Blacks, but their educational levels fall
far below what African Americans have achieved. Parrillo argues that the Hispanics fall behind other
groups in educational attainment due to the limited formal education of parents. Mexicans are the least
educated while Cubans are the most highly educated. Parrillo also mentions Hispanic Americans
median income fall below Asians and Whites, but their median income is above African Americans. I
don t disagree with the fact that Hispanic Americans fall in terms of education and Parrillo s point of
having a low education due to their parent s level of education is definitely a fact. Overall, Hispanic
Americans greatly contribute to the American economy and help make small businesses become
successful. My one question to Parrillo s analysis would be what would happen to the economy once
the newer generations of Hispanics become educated. My prediction would be that the small
businesses would collapse due to no one making up for labor intensive job positions. The future shall

Mild behavior (Redirection, interrupting, talking while teacher is talking) 1.Token economy (earn
tickets or money for prize or preferred activity) Overview: A token economy is an intervention
designed to promote appropriate classroom behavior. Students are rewarded for selected behaviors
with a token. They have the opportunity to cash in for a desired item or activity once they have earned
a set number of tokens. Tokens may be awarded over a period of time for acceptable effort and work
(Shea Bauer, 2012). The tokens provide immediate feedback for positive behavior and earning
multiple tokens will give more choices of a reward at the designated purchasing or cash in time. The
teacher should determine what behaviors earn students a token (i.e. raising a quiet hand). The desired
behaviors are explained to students using positive terms and posted where they are easily visible. A
physical token should be chosen, such as a raffle ticket or paper coin. Students should be aware of
what they are able to buy with their tokens (i.e. pencils, extra break time). The prizes should be based
on student interests. Para Use of Strategy: Paraprofessionals can provide input on target behaviors
based on observations. Once the teacher has gone over the rules with students, paras can help enforce
the intervention by reminding students of the rules and distributing tokens as students earn them. The
tokens should be given directly following an appropriate behavior.

The Gospel of Luke is one of the four gospels as part of the new testament. The Gospel of Luke is said
to have been written around 85 ce. As Luke was not an eyewitness for the events he describes, he was
dependent on previous writings such as the Gospel of Mark. The purpose of the Gospel of Luke is to
communicate the life and teachings of Jesus in a way that promotes the significance of God and his
divine nature. Luke makes an effort to make his readings relatable to readers from different religious,
ethnic, and social backgrounds. As a result, Luke makes an effort to create an easily relatable story
through his use of language and writing structures, in order to create a persuasive argument for his
readers to convert to Christianity. One ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His last words before his crucifixion were Father, into your hands I commend my spirit are notable to
the readers of Luke as they show the calm resolution of Jesus despite his plea of innocence, further
displaying the admirable characteristics he possesses. Luke ends his gospel with the resurrection of
Jesus, and uses the story to further convince his audience of Christianity. If Jesus had only died and
never been resurrected, his death would have been like the normal death of a human. However,
through his resurrection he is further established as someone free of sin, and rewarded for his
demeanor with life after death. To readers of the Gospel, not only does the resurrection persuade
believers in life again after death, (a tempting philosophy for his audience to believe in), but also
shows that Jesus has survived and is still there to help believers in his faith. By describing the
resurrection of Jesus, Luke presents his audience with the belief that Jesus is immortal and therefore
always there to respond to an individual s prayers and

Cinderella In Charles Perrault s Cinderella Frozen In Time
Cinderella Frozen in Time: Why Cinderella continues be portrayed as a victim in the era of feminism
Cinderella has changed so little over time that it seems we re still in the 1700 s reading Charles
Perrault s first edition. And yet it remains one of the most popular fairy tales read to
Joshi 8 children. The role of women continues to be either the cruel, evil one or the good, docile one
while the prince continues to be the saving grace of the helpless girl. The skeleton hasn t changed
much as well. A damsel in distress, saved by a knight in shining armor, who falls in love with her and
they live happily ever after. Does this sound familiar? This sentence might as well be a fairy tale. We
ve seen this over and over in Cinderella, Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White.
I chose Cendrillon or the Little Glass Slippers by Charles Perrault as my fairy tale. I grew up reading
the Disney story book, inspired by Perrault s version. I can still imagine the animated faces even
though it s been years since I ve read that book. My tale is a modern adaptation of Cendrillon, where
the character is not weak willed or naive. The main focus is on justice and on her relationship with her
step siblings and her Prince which is much more than superficial attraction. In Perrault s version,
Cinderella s father remarries after the death of her mother. Her step mother s cruel treatment and
aggravation is due to her own daughters unpleasant deposition when compared to Cinderella s good

Civil Litigation Detection Paper
A civil lawsuit involves an individual, business or governmental agency that is seeking relief from
another individual, business or governmental agency. They seek the reimbursement of monetary
damages or equitable relief for harm caused to an individual or group.
Parties to civil suits may choose to have their cases decided by a jury or a judge only. Most cases are
negotiated outside of the courtroom and a settlement agreement between the parties is entered.
When a person, group of people or business entity feels harmed by another usually consults with an
attorney in an effort to resolve the dispute and obtain equitable relief or money damages. The attorney
interviews witnesses and perform legal research. If there is a legitimate cause of action against the
wrongdoer, the attorney and client executes retainer agreement,

Criminal actions involve injustices against the people of the state and are filed by the state or federal

battery a person can be charge criminally and sued civilly.
In criminal cases an individual accused of a serious crime is rarely desirous of arguing a case to a
judge only. An accused and the prosecutor negotiate a mutually satisfactory disposition of the case
without going to trial whereby the defendant usually agrees to plead guilty to a lesser charge in return

Stephen Crane s The Open Boat
While taking a cruise to Jamaica for vacations, the ship you are at starts to sink. How do you think
people in the ship would react to this scenario? Stephen Crane, an American author, wrote the story
The Open Boat . The story is about a boat sinking in the middle of the ocean with four men. The
characters presented by Crane in the story are a cook, an oiler, a correspondent, and the captain.
Although the story is narrated from the view of the correspondent; Crane gives the reader some
particular characteristics of the captain. The goal of this paper is to interpret the character of the
captain by discussing his actions, feelings, and quotes presented by Crane. A captain is an individual
who takes leadership and responsibility in a vessel. People think that a captain can just be found in
large ships; however, captains are necessary in any kind of boat, ship, or yacht. Therefore, in the story
Crane gives the authority to the captain. The captain is the one in charge in the boat and the one that
gives directions to the other three men. Throughout the story we can see that the other three men
respected the captain and his decisions. If the three men wanted to something, they would first
consulted with the captain before doing it. After the sinking of the boat, the captain was really
devastated because it was his responsibility and he fail. In the beginning of the story Cranes defines
the captain very sad and with the impotence of not being able to do anything. (Crane, page

Loneliness in Cannery Row, by John Steinbeck
As night falls on Cannery Row actuality and fear overwhelms the souls as they lay awake at night. At

During the day the things the people of Cannery Row use to fill their void. To give them happiness is
gone and for those long hours of the night they are truly alone. The cats, the parties, and companions
are gone just for a second. But they return in the morning to calm the weary and the broken spirits of

Although Frankie has never had much love he knows what it means and he finds it in Doc. With Doc
he is not alone. Doc is his protection, his comforter. He is also a father figure who he looks up to.
Undoubtedly Doc and Frankie share something and it is there intellectual capacities. Their intellect
predisposes them to a certain form of loneliness. It is of course on the opposite spectrum. Doc is
highly and unusually intelligent while Frankie is on the slow side. They find it hard to fit in with the
people of Cannery Row because they cannot find a place where they fit in intellectually. We can all
think back to the smart kid or who we would refer to as the nerd in high school. They were the kids
who always sat alone at lunch who did not go to dances or social events. Never got asked to prom and
had very little friends. If you are too smart you are a nerd and if you are too slow you are dim witted.
Therefore is safe to say intelligence plays a huge role in loneliness. Doc chooses to be to put all his

The Failure Of Vocation Ltd Essay
1. Identify the problem The scope of this essay is using the professional knowledge to critically
analyze the failure of Vocation Ltd in 2015. This essay will provide three of possible categories of
corporate failure that contributed to the failure of Vacation Ltd, and using suitable accounting theories
explain these. Further more this essay will choose suitable Corporate Governance Principles to try
preventing the failure of Vocation. This essay focuses on the problem of Vocation Ltd ignoring the
external pressure, such as: changing of policy. In Australia the corporate failures means the insolvency
that a company cease its business operation(Michaela 2012, 365 366). The categories of corporate
failures are six possible reasons that lead the failure of corporate(Mickelwaith 2006, 2 6). The
accounting theory is a way to explain the accounting practice or prescribe how accounting should be

Mechanical calculators came on the scene shortly after the slide rule was developed. Instead of
needing the operator to apply algorithms to perform calculations as was the case with manual
calculators, a mechanical calculator implemented algorithms autonomously. The operator entered the
numbers for the calculations and pulled a lever/turned a wheel and the calculation would be carried
out. Mechanical calculators were developed in 1623, one of them was called Shickard s calculator,
which contained a series of interlocking gears. It had ten spokes and each spoke on a gear represented
a digit. Each time that the gear made one complete revolution, it moved on to the next gear which was
one notch to the left in order to carry the one . Moving on to 1642, Blaise Pascal developed what was
known as the pascaline. A pascaline was a mechanical device that was used for both addition and
subtraction as well as division and multiplication. Gottfried Whilhelm von Leibniz created a similar
calculator in 1673. In 1820, however, Thomas de Colmar s Arithmometer was the first mass produced
mechanical calculator. Soon, calculators wouldn t need human power in order to operate. In 1822,
Charles Babbage created plans for a device that would be called the Difference Engine that would run
only on steam power. It was made to rapidly and accurately calculate large tables of numbers that were
used for engineering and astronomical applications. The blueprints for the Difference Engine

Media Hurt Relationships
Social Media Can Hurt Relationships Nearly all communications are now done through some form of
social media. Today around seven in ten Americans use social media to connect with their friends or to
entertain themselves. In 2005 when the Pew Research Center began to track social media use, just 5%
of American adults used at least one of these platforms and by 2011 half of all Americans began to use
social media (Pew Research Center). Today 69% of the public uses some type of social media (Pew
Research Center). Social media can negatively hurt relationships because of miscommunication and
words are exchanged that normally would not be exchanged in person.
Relationships are put on the line due to social media. The Pew Research Center says that overall
reports have shown that young adults are more likely to report tension in their relationships over
technology use while just one in ten online adults 65 and older say the same (Lenhart Duggan). A girl
will not have a good first impression if a guy is on his phone the whole time while on their first date or
vice versa. Family relationships and trust will have a hard time growing if a parent communicates with
their child or a child lets their parent know something through social media. Words are exchanged that

The Legal Approach Of The American Constitution
The Legal Approach: This approach is very tricky to control the president, and therefore, it is very
important to block and prevent any tyrannical regime because it is all about laws and legislatures. In
here, the American constitution is very important and leads the way. It shows that how the constitution
plays a role in presidency. Through this, the significant advantage of this approach is that the president
and his or her presidency is controlled by the constitution, laws, legal precedents and customs. The
legal approach limits the power of the president, and put some boundaries of the presidential warrant,
reach and powers to prevent any tyrannical kind of regimes. This approach also determines that how a
president uses his or her authority with other branches of the federal government, such as judiciary,
the congress and bureaucracy. The Institutional Approach: The Institutional Approach is a traditional
old and significant one that affects the attitudes of the president towards the institution of the
presidency. Because of this, this approach deals with legislature, executive, judiciary, political parties,
interest groups, and the president himself/herself. The presidential institution exists to handle three
sets of responsibilities, regardless of who is president: policy issues, political targets, and the daily
workload (Nelson, year, 41). Of course, the presidency as an institution is very important. Also, a
president plays an important role in this institution.

Copper And Zinc Reaction Lab Report
In retrospect, the practical was very easy to follow and achieved the desired results. In order to
quantify the amount of electricity generated through the spontaneous redox reaction, a multimeter was
used to measure the follow of electricity between the Copper and the anode. This gave us an increased
reliability and accuracy than using an analogue voltmeter. When it was calculated, the reaction
between the Copper and Magnesium in theory had a potential difference of 2.58v. The Copper and
Zinc reaction was also calculated to have the expected potential difference of 1.1v whilst the Copper
and Lead had 0.7v. When looking at the half equations of the various reactions, the electron transfer
direction can be gathered. The place of oxidation is the side which loses electrons and the place of
reduction, which gains them. Therefore, it can be determined that the electron flow direction is from
the anodes [ which are Zinc, Magnesium, and Lead], the oxidization agents, to the Copper cathode, the
reduction agent. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These differences across all three reactions ranged from 0.056 volts and 1.58 volts. The potential
cause for these inaccuracies are numerous. The occurrence of these inaccuracies may have been due to
random errors such as the sizes of the filter paper and meta strips, inaccurate measurements of the
solutions, weight of the metal strips. In addition, the introduction of systematic errors may have also
increased the inaccuracies in the results. Some systematic errors which occurred were: not sanding any
of the metal strips as well as not having a specified amount of time for soaking the filter paper. These
errors both random and systematic may have been minimised or highlighted through conducting
various repetitions of the practical investigation so that results can be averaged to be more accurate

Fibromyalgia Summary
Chapter 1
History of Fibromyalgia
Brief History of Nervous System Disorders
The systematical correlation and illustration of neurological diseases were made in the 19th century by
Philippe Pinel and Xavier Bichat in France. In the United Kingdom, Matthew Baillie, Robert Hooper,
Charles Bell, Richard Bright, Joseph Swan, Robert Carswell and James Hope penned the 1832
Anatomy Act. Thomas Willis conducted examinations of the nervous system through both an analysis
of symptoms and clinical observations. Robert Whytt examined the pupil. James Parkinson studied the
tremor. Moritz Romberg, William Gowers, Carl Wernicke, and Hermann Oppenheim wrote manuals
and textbooks. Monographs first appeared in 1920.
Willis described neurological disorders, revealing the clinical methodology becoming the basis of
modern medicine. He studied seizures (partial seizures, epilepsy, and movement disorders) asserting
they are a consequence of activity in the brain. Willis also classified hysteria as a brain disorder. He
penned descriptions of headache, apoplexy, neurosyphilis, narcolepsy, paracusis, mental retardation,
and other psychiatric disorders.
Whytt distinguished nervous, hypochondria, and hysteria diseases. Gowers wrote A Manual of Disease

English Language Learning Program Analysis
Candelaria Lopez tried to learn English before, but it did not work. She could not always make it to

There are numerous upon numerous different styles of art from traditional art to new media art.
Traditional genres of art such as painting, drawing and ceramics create pieces of work that are done by

technological devices. In addition, digital media art can be in a form of a video, sculpture, installation

The Problem With Subprime Mortgages And Minorities
The problem with Subprime Mortgages and Minorities
When it comes to buying a home there are a few things you need first. Of course you need money , but
what if you don t have the money but you want to get a home? Well you would apply for a loan, but
there are two loans you could qualify for and those two are known as prime loans and subprime loans.
There are far too many cases where there are well qualified people with the credentials to get a prime
loan but were denied, forcing them to settle for worse forms of credit such as subprime loan. The
problem is that it is unethical to even offer these subprime loans because of the debt that it puts
subprime borrowers in. Through my research I have gathered I have determined that well qualifying
minorities, in particular blacks and Hispanics, have been denied prime mortgages based on race and
prejudices, making them easier prey for less convenient loans such as subprime mortgages, which
results in higher default and foreclosure rates amongst minority residences.
Subprime loans A subprime loan is a loan given to people who generally have bad to below average
credit and are charged with higher interest rates because of past credit history. Subprime mortgages

The American Dream Of An Unbiased Judicial, Executive, And...
Many Americans have the good fortune to be brought up believing that they can trust their
governmental system. Unfortunately, the American Dream of an unbiased judicial, executive, and
legislative branch cannot be equally accessed by all Americans. Some parents find it is necessary to
dispel the myth of the American Dream for their children, to protect their young minds from future
mental strife and in some cases to protect their bodies from future physical harm. This is a reality in
our country today. In the increasingly tense political and social environment corruption festers and bad
politics reign. While the situation may seem hopeless, it is important to realize that the struggle to
ensure equal rights for all has been a cause that countless people have been committed to throughout
the history of our country. They have dreamt and continue to dream of a better future, one in which
race and economic status do not define a child s potential. People have been fighting for equal
treatment since nearly the founding of the nation first to end slavery, then to stop the legal and social
practice of segregation. While discovering its point of origin is unlikely, it is possible to examine the
time frame which saw the struggle for equality fully developed into the Civil Rights Movement. The
movement reached its peak in the 1950s and 1960s with significant figures like Martin Luther King

* Le Massif Resort: While the number of skiable acres is only a scant 410, you can rest assured that
this doesn t mean a shortage on challenges. In fact, this ski resort is more tailored to the advanced
skier versus the beginner, though there are some slopes for the beginners as well. It is in close
proximity to Quebec City so there is no shortage of things to do when you are not hitting the slopes.
Although, you shouldn t expect to do much more than ski at this resort as many of the locals peg this

St Luke s Anglican School Analysis
In film theory, documentary is increasingly identified as film, a story and, it can be argued, as fiction
like any other film. There can be two types of documentaries which include, Objective and Subjective.
A subjective documentary is personal interpretations of facts or events that is not impartial. A
objective documentary consists of observed facts and is unbiased. Our assignment was to develop a
documentary on a topic of our choice and choose what type of documentary we would like to do. We
chose to do a subjective documentary on Why St Luke s Anglican School is a Good School. Our target
audience was 15 years old students at St Luke s Anglican School. When choosing the groups, the final
outcome was Harry, Letitia, Alister and myself. I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also when deciding who does what jobs, we should have evenly spread the jobs out, as we had people
doing multiple things and others only doing one. When choosing a topic we did have trouble as
opinions did differ as some people didn t want to do the topic St Luke s is a Good School. We did
change topic ideas a couple of times, however, when sitting down and talking about ideas for the topic
first topic we chose which was, St Luke s Anglican School is a Good School, we came to the
conclusion that the topic St Luke s is a Good School would be great. As this assignment was to be
done at school we had all our interviewees at one place, which made it easy for us to film. Overall, I
think that we were able to capture the reality of why St Luke s is a good school, this being that we got
a good range of different people s opinion on the school, teaching and

Proto-Feminism In Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter
Proto feminism, the prelude of the modern day ideals of feminism, by advocating some of the ideals of
feminism, is embodied in may early pieces of American literature such as Nathaniel Hawthorne s The
Scarlet Letter. Striving for social, economic and political equality between the two sexes, feminism
aims to abolish the patriarchy that exists in so many of the world s nation. Unlike its latter form, proto
feminism was radically different from feminism as proto feminists promoted some aspects of
feminism while repudiating others. (Thorpe, J.R.)While very few men would be considered proto
feminists, women such as Abigail Adams and Louisa May Alcott, are regarded as some of the most
influential proto feminists. Alongside Louisa May Alcott, Nathaniel Hawthorne s works embodied
elements of proto feminism through promoting equality between the two sexes. (Proto Feminist
Literature) In Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne, an adulterous woman forced
to show her sign of sin, is a proto feminist promoting equality of the sexes through showcasing the
strength of women, promoting the end of patriarchy, and humanizing the female sex. In Nathaniel

Then the very nature of the opposite sex, or its long hereditary habit, which has become like nature, is
to be essentially modified before woman can be allowed to assume what seems a fair and suitable
position. p.114
In order for women to gain power, Hester believes that society must first be destroyed, created again,
and changed if women would like to gain power. Through this transformation occurring, males and
females will finally be able to live in mutual happiness. Thus, the patriarchy must end for women to
be able to gain power in society. Promoting the end of the patriarchy and an era of female equality,
Nathaniel Hawthorne promotes the ideals of proto feminism in The Scarlet

The Disney Princess Effect Essay
The Disney princesses are a common sight in any household with girls under the age of 8. However,
these seemingly harmless women contribute to a darker theme in media. In her essay, Little Girls or
Little Women? The Disney Princess Effect , Stephanie Hanes uses storytelling, strong facts, and
helpful alternatives to effectively persuade parents that the media is targeting young girls with
sexualized content, argues that this content is harmful to them in a number of ways, and inspires
parents to take action. Stephanie Hanes utilizes emotive storytelling to connect with her readers and to
show them specific examples of how sexualized media can impact young girls. One story that Hanes
uses is that of Mary Finucane and her daughter Caoimhe. When her daughter was around three years
old, Finucane began to see a change in how Caoimhe acted. She would no longer run around like one
would expect of a carefree toddler, instead she would sit around and wait for her prince (Hanes 509).
This change in behavior alarmed Mary Finucane, and she began to suspect that the Disney princesses
were to blame. After further research, Finucane came to realize that these princesses led to problems
from self objectification to cyberbullying to unhealthy body images. (Hanes 510). Prompted by her
experience, Finucane decided to start a blog dedicated to her attempt to break the grip that Disney had
on her daughter (Hanes 510). Finucane s blog gained popularity, as many other parents were having

  • 3. Slavery In The Old South This historical analysis will define the argument put forth by James Oakes (1998) about the misguided view of slavery as a paternalistic system of economics in the Old South. The paternalistic/honorific view of slavery is incorrect because of the underlying system of capitalism, which allowed slaveholders to exploit, commercialize, and commoditize slaves for profit. More so, Oakes (1998) shows how the industrial Northern was simply a different form of capitalism that often cooperated with the agrarian South in exploiting slaves as a method of low cost labor. Machine technology allowed northerner manufacturers to exploit low wage laborers in industry, yet the South relied heavily on the exploitation of slaves for agrarian production. Oakes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The only conflict between the two capitalist systems was the outdated methods of human labor that the South relied upon to compete with the increasingly industrialized methods of farming that the north was using as they expanded into western territories. Oakes (1998) defines the capitalist system as the driving force for economic conflicts between these two regions of the United States: Having repudiated the suggestion that all poor people in America ought to be enslaved, conservatives argued instead that slavery, as practiced in the South, represented the fulfillment of destiny (Oakes, 1998, p. 215). This economic view of low cost labor defines how Oakes (1998) understands the underlying profitability of a capitalistic system, which temporarily sustained a cooperative relationship between the North and South. The difference between these two societies was the method in which low cost labor could be exploited through wage slavery in the North and outright slavery in the South. The roots of capitalism are also found in the willingness of colonial slaveholders to join the American Revolution because it would free them from the exploitative bonds of British capitalism that hindered their ascension to greater wealth as land owners and slave holders: Colonial slaveholders had enthusiastically joined the Revolution against Britain: most saw no conflict between its libertarian principles and the perpetuation of slavery (Oakes, 1998, p.241). These are important aspects of the underlying profitability of slavery in the capitalistic system of economics, which often overrode the principles in favor of gaining access to low cost slave labor during the antebellum era. If you wore black, you were a witch. If you enjoyed reading, you were a witch. If you had a mole/birthmark, you were a witch. The reasons go on and on but I won t bore you with that. What is witchcraft/witches Witch craft is defined as a form of sorcery and often portrayed as a sign of the devil, the practice of magic, especially black magic; the use of spells and the invocation of spirits, according to the dictionary. Unfortunately, this is not a concrete answer because the definition would imply this being a bad thing. The existence of glinda the good witch contradicts this statement. Also the wicca religion makes the definition a little questionable because they don t necessarily practice witchcraft with evil intent. They do match up with the things that would make you a witch, (Connecting with nature and other things) they don t match the stereotypical look of a witch with the large and deformed nose, pointed hat and broom flying abilities. The story takes place at Hogwarts, a school of witchcraft and wizardry. Harry Potter is a student at Hogwarts, and Ron and Hermione are his best friends. The main focus was a secret chamber hidden in the school, that has been opened and was opened years before. There were attacks on the students by a basilisk snake, which was put there by an evil wizard named Voldemort. Harry, Ron, and Hermione kept searching for clues to find out how the attacks were happening until they were lead right to the answer. Over all, the book was a good story and was very exciting and creative. The story begins when Dobby, a small house elf, warns Harry about something bad in Hogwarts. Something bad did happen. It was the chamber. It was being opened and attacks were coming from it. Harry was trying to figure out who was planning the attacks, what was in the chamber, and who opened it. Harry, Hermione, and Ron made assumptions about who opened it before, and tried to figure out who it was by making potions, spying, and talking to different people about it. They often met in the girls prefects bathroom to talk. Once when they were in there making a potion to get ideas out of people, they came across a magical diary by a person named Tom Riddle. Hindu women have the opportunity to express themselves creatively through the daily creation of kolams, also known as Rangoli. These kolams can express many meanings such as announcing that their home is welcome to others, announce special events, worship deities, and celebrate festivals. The presence or absence of the kolam on the front stoop is equivalent to announcing that a household is open or closed to the world, a cultural category that sends off a capacious sense of hospitableness or hospitality, specifically, the willingness and ability to feed stranger, (Pintchman, 88). This can be interpreted as the idea that the family has a surplus of food and is willing to help people in the community who need it. This means if there were someone wandering the streets: a community member, visitor, or stranger, they would read this kolam as a very strong encouraging sign that they might be able to receive a bowl of hot food or other hospitality from this family. Another way that kolams can be used is to announce special events for a household, such as births, deaths, or menstruation cycles. In some households, when a child is born, special elaborate designs may be made for the kolam of that day, to announce the child s birth. Certain symbols and figures would be used to indicate that it was the birth of a child. In other castes and parts of India, the birth of a child may not be announced through the design of a special kolam. IAU proposed three conditions to becoming a planet. The first condition being: (a) is in orbit around the Sun; the second condition being: (b) has sufficient mass for its self gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape; the third condition, in which Pluto has not met the standards to, being:(c) has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit. Mild behavior (Redirection, interrupting, talking while teacher is talking) 1.Token economy (earn tickets or money for prize or preferred activity) Overview: A token economy is an intervention designed to promote appropriate classroom behavior. Students are rewarded for selected behaviors with a token. They have the opportunity to cash in for a desired item or activity once they have earned a set number of tokens. Tokens may be awarded over a period of time for acceptable effort and work (Shea Bauer, 2012). The tokens provide immediate feedback for positive behavior and earning multiple tokens will give more choices of a reward at the designated purchasing or cash in time. The teacher should determine what behaviors earn students a token (i.e. raising a quiet hand). The desired behaviors are explained to students using positive terms and posted where they are easily visible. A physical token should be chosen, such as a raffle ticket or paper coin. Students should be aware of what they are able to buy with their tokens (i.e. pencils, extra break time). The prizes should be based on student interests. Para Use of Strategy: Paraprofessionals can provide input on target behaviors based on observations. Once the teacher has gone over the rules with students, paras can help enforce the intervention by reminding students of the rules and distributing tokens as students earn them. Stephen Crane, an American author, wrote the story The Open Boat . The story is about a boat sinking in the middle of the ocean with four men. The characters presented by Crane in the story are a cook, an oiler, a correspondent, and the captain. Although the story is narrated from the view of the correspondent; Crane gives the reader some particular characteristics of the captain. The goal of this paper is to interpret the character of the captain by discussing his actions, feelings, and quotes presented by Crane. People think that a captain can just be found in large ships; however, captains are necessary in any kind of boat, ship, or yacht. Therefore, in the story Crane gives the authority to the captain. The captain is the one in charge in the boat and the one that gives directions to the other three men. Mechanical calculators came on the scene shortly after the slide rule was developed. Instead of needing the operator to apply algorithms to perform calculations as was the case with manual calculators, a mechanical calculator implemented algorithms autonomously. The operator entered the numbers for the calculations and pulled a lever/turned a wheel and the calculation would be carried out. Mechanical calculators were developed in 1623, one of them was called Shickard s calculator, which contained a series of interlocking gears. It had ten spokes and each spoke on a gear represented a digit. Each time that the gear made one complete revolution, it moved on to the next gear which was one notch to the left in order to carry the one . Moving on to 1642, Blaise Pascal developed what was known as the pascaline. A pascaline was a mechanical device that was used for both addition and subtraction as well as division and multiplication. Gottfried Whilhelm von Leibniz created a similar calculator in 1673. In 1820, however, Thomas de Colmar s Arithmometer was the first mass produced mechanical calculator. In order to quantify the amount of electricity generated through the spontaneous redox reaction, a multimeter was used to measure the follow of electricity between the Copper and the anode. This gave us an increased reliability and accuracy than using an analogue voltmeter. When it was calculated, the reaction between the Copper and Magnesium in theory had a potential difference of 2.58v. The Copper and Zinc reaction was also calculated to have the expected potential difference of 1.1v whilst the Copper and Lead had 0.7v. When looking at the half equations of the various reactions, the electron transfer direction can be gathered. The place of oxidation is the side which loses electrons and the place of reduction, which gains them. Therefore, it can be determined that the electron flow direction is from the anodes [ which are Zinc, Magnesium, and Lead], the oxidization agents, to the Copper cathode, the reduction agent. ...
