Summary Of The Loss Of The CreatureBy Richard...
How someone looks, acts, or is seen means a lot in Rodriguez s society. Complexion is an excerpt
from the memoir, Hunger of Memories, which Richard Rodriguez has wrote. The essay, The Loss
of the Creature was written by Percy Walker who uses many examples to show different outcomes
of different situations. Percy s essay can be related to the chapter Complexion from Hunger of
Memories by connecting the struggle of a person with examples of Rodriguez s struggle throughout
his childhood. Percy discusses the struggle for the person in which Rodriguez explores throughout
the chapter, Complexion in his memoir.
The struggle for the person that Percy describes in The Loss of the Creature is displayed by
Rodriguez s manliness which is being nullified from him. Rodriguez s father does not think that
Rodriguez is manly. His father thought that he was not manly because of two things; he did not
know what real work was and that his hands were soft. Rodriguez had felt like his manliness was
being stripped of him because, At such times I suspected that education was making me
effeminate. (Rodriguez 457) Rodriguez s mother was proud of all her children for getting an
education even if he wasn t. His father and him may think getting an education is effeminate but it
can be manly. School can give you rough hands by spending hours writing with a pencil and
getting callus . Rodriguez can experience hard work through a job that he s earned by working hard
in school. Getting an

Meet Josh. Josh is a 30 year old artist/chef who resides in a transformed stockroom in Hackney,
east Greater london. Josh has a beard, glasses and appreciates the provenance of his coffee. He
pays his tax, does not have a 9 to 5 job and also, along with his 5 polymathic roommates, avoids
public transportation, preferring to use a bike. On paper, Josh is the stereotypical hipster just don

While the meaning of hipster hasn t changed significantly over the years, there was a time when
it was considered to be something both meaningful and particular. The word was created in the
1940s to specify a person who rejected social norms such as middle class white individuals who
listened to jazz. Then came a responsive literary subculture, understood via the work of beatniks
such as Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs. It was Norman Mailer which attempted to define
hipsters in his essay The White Negro as postwar American white generation of rebels, disillusioned
by battle, which decided to divorce oneself from society, to exist without roots, to set out on that
undiscovered trip into the rebellious imperatives of the self . A decade later on, we had the counter
culture movement hippies that lugged their lantern in a relatively obvious manner, divorced from
the mainstream. The word mainly disappeared until the 1990s, when it was redefined so about

The Truth In Edgar Allan Poe s The Raven
In today s world, the news is constantly shrouded in controversy. Stories of violence and crime
are everywhere. Hidden amongst the plethora of articles, there s bound to be a report without a
shred of truth in it. As smart as people like to think they are, mistakes in judgement do occur from
time to time. A mere glimpse of a shocking headline is enough to throw someone off. Given
enough intimidating and persuasive words, it can be quite easy to mislead someone. When a
person is overcome with emotion, it can be even more difficult to distinguish what is real or not.
Edgar Allan Poes most prominent poem, The Raven, gives an example. In The Raven, the Raven
is not actually real, but rather, it is a manifestation of the speaker s built up vexation; this is
relevant to 2017, since people are easily deceived when they are frustrated.
The first implication that the Raven is not real is in the beginning of the poem when the bird
appears spontaneously. At first, the speaker only hears a tapping at his door. Logically, he
assumes that the noise is that of a random visitor. Upon opening the door, however, he sees
[darkness] there and nothing more (Poe 24). The speaker returns to his chamber, but the sound
continues, this time coming from his window. Instead of finding nothing once more, he is
surprised to find a raven fly in and [perch] upon a bust of Pallas just above [his] chamber door (Poe
41). It is hard to explain how the Raven changes its position so quickly. Because

Agenda Setting Theroy
Agenda setting theory Introduction: There is no question that communication is an important
element in our life. We can learn how to communicate either by our experiences which probably
will take a longtime to learn or by studying the experiences and theories of others. In
Communication theory we have learned many theories that are very important to understanding
human Communication. Communication is not more important nowadays than before because it s
always been an important aspect of human existence. These days communication style has been
developed and has changed dramatically due to the media and the technology. Communications
between cultures have never been better than today. A consequence of the development of the
media technology is that media now plays a major influence on societies and in some countries
the media is considered the fourth branch of government. In my discussion, I have selected
agenda setting theory, which is explained by Donald Shaw, Maxwell McCombs, and their
colleagues. I chose this theory because of its significance and because it has more explanation of
what can be explained beyond the TV shows and reports. Media and freedom of speech is an
important thing in America, however I think there is a real communication problem in the way
media portrays the Arab World to the American people. There is a misperception in America about
the Arab world and this problem is a result of the way that the media portrays events and the way
that they pick

Burning American Flag Persuasive Essay
Whether someone is watching the news or simply flipping through their social media pages, one
thing they will certainly see is protesting of some kind. Recently, the first thing that these protestors
want to do it set fire to the American flag. Why would they do this? Why would they burn a
symbol of the freedom they are using to demonstrate their frustrations? Burning the American flag
is wrong not only legally but also ethically and therefore should not be protected under freedom of
speech. When asked why, most protestors who want to burn the American flag respond with an
answer such as it s our first amendment right. Even though the U. S. Supreme court ruled that
burning the American flag is protected under the first amendment right to freedom of expression,
the reality is that it is against the law to desecrate the American flag. According to 18 U.S. Code
В§ 700 Whoever knowingly mutilates, defaces, physically defiles, burns, maintains on the floor or
ground, or tramples upon any flag of the United States shall be fined under this title or imprisoned
for not more than one year, or both. This clearly shows that the legislative branch saw that is was
wrong to burn the American flag.
While the judicial branch said, in United States v. Eichman, the Supreme Court once again ruled
that burning the flag was an example of constitutionally protected free speech (Rothman) they made
it clear that no person can be legally charged under this code it doesn t change that fact

Sino Soviet Relations
To what extent was the deterioration in Sino Soviet relations in the years 1958 69 due to personal
rivalries?
The deterioration in Sino Soviet relations between 1958 1969 is due to a number of different
factorssome historians argue that conflicting personal rivalries between Mao and Khrushchev
contributed to the split until 1964, however other historians argue that other factors influenced the
deterioration. For example both sides were ideologically different, this can be seen as they were
both pursuing different methods of achieving communism, and during many occasions they
disagreed with each other. However the most significant factor causing the split was their
conflicting national interests, as although without the existing personal ... Show more content on

This shows a clear confliction in national interests, and a cause for a deterioration in Sino Soviet
relations was the invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. Due to this, Mao introduced his policy of
active defence towards the USSR and this was because of his paranoia that the USSR could try to
assert dominance over China. This shows a clear confliction of national interests as the USSR was
preventing China from expansion and this added to the initial ideological and personality disputes
stated above. Therefore the deterioration in Sino Soviet relations was due to conflicting national
interests more than personality and ideological clashes as from this, both sides clearly wanted
different things, conflict between them was inevitable.
Finally another argument that some historians put forward is the Ussuri River dispute in 1969
where both sides shared a common border. This was one of the most important reasons for the
deterioration in relations because it was the first time both sides came into direct conflict with the
other during this in which on the first day, over 30 Soviet soldiers died. This showed a direct cause
for deterioration in relations, because two countries cannot be allies if they are constantly at
fighting with one another. These border disputes had been ongoing for many years, showing that a
fundamental cause for the deterioration in relations between the

The Pawnee Rangers Essay
To demonstrate how this show has managed to weave positive feminist ideals into every aspect
of the show, it is not hard to find examples in almost every episode. Truly one of the strongest
example of this takes place is the episode The Pawnee Ranger, where Leslie fights the
discriminating policies of the males only Pawnee Rangers, which is led by her boss Ron
Swanson. They proceed to fight over their rivaling youth camp organizations, with Ron s spartan
Pawnee Rangers, who learn to appreciate fishing, camping, and complete silence, up against Leslie
s supportive and indulgent Pawnee Goddesses, who practice arts and crafts and self confidence
building exercises. This episode, while still remaining to be very funny, also shows the importance
of genderequality, depicting the value in teaching young girls to be self confident, independent

is able to inspire those around her to action, training the world to be a better place by being

The Science Fiction Film Genre Essay
Science Fiction Films
The science fiction film genre has been around almost as long as movies have, but like the cinema
it is still a fairly young art form. This genre came into existence shortly after the invention of the
movie camera in 1888 and has endured for over one hundred years. Science fiction is adaptive; it
changes with the times and this trend can be seen in its incorporation of other genres, cultural
history and technology. This essay will attempt to define the genre, chronicle the history and
evolution, and explore its relation to technology. This is in general and in the cinema.
When discussing the science fiction film genre a problem occurs. The distinction between science
fiction and other genres is not always clear cut. Many movies span between the science fiction
genre and other genres. Movies such as The Ring (2002) or the Alien series (1979, 1986, 1992,
and 1997) illustrate how the distinction between science fiction and horror films can be obscure.
Some comedies, such as Mars Attacks (1996) and Back to the Future (1985), are very much
science fiction. In fact there is an example of a science fiction film fitting into almost any genre.
Starship Troopers (1997) parallels a war film and Outland (1981) resembles a western in many
respects.
The characteristics that define the science fiction genre can be difficult to pin down. A genre such
as the western has easily identifiable characteristics such as cowboys, guns, the Wild West, and bad
guys with

Chevy Vs Corvette Research Paper
Is the Chevrolet Camaro SS a 2+2 version of the Corvette? It sure seems that way.
Both models share a 6.2 liter, V 8 engine making 455 horsepower. The Camaro has an output of
455 foot pounds of torque; the Corvette comes in at 460 foot pounds. In the Camaro, you get a 6
speed manual transmission; the Corvette has an additional shift point.
From there, the differences become more apparent as the Camaro is at least 300 pounds heavier,
a foot longer and sits five inches higher than Chevrolet s sports car. The styling separation is
apparent as well, but if you were to drive both models back to back, you d quickly note the
performance levels are nearly the same.

The Psychology of Serial Killers Essay
The Psychology of Serial Killers Many things today confuse, yet enthrall the masses. War, murder,
medical science, incredible rescues, all things you would see on The History Channel. There is
another topic that is also made into documentaries however, serial killers. Dark twisted people that
commit multiple murders are of interest to the population, but what caused them to be this way.
What horrible tragic set of events could twist a man to murder one or many people. Could
Schizophrenia, psychopathy, or sociopathy? Many people have researched this topic and believe
that childhood trauma, heavy drugs during the growing phase of life, as well as many other things

The case is very different with incipient serial killers. Fixated at a shockingly primitive stage of
emotional development, they never lose their craving for cruelty and domination. Quite
contrary: it continues to grow in them like a cancer. Eventually when dogs, cats, and other
small, four legged creatures can no longer satisfy it, they turn their terrifying attentions to a
larger, two legged breed: human beings.? The author mentions the ?primitive stage of emotional
development? in which the person would be retaining that would also explain the bed wetting

Fire is something that can be controlled by a man and twisted into an idea of power. Fire for
these individuals brings power and excitement. Henry Lee Lucas, who murdered over 450
people, burned down a house near his own at the age of six. Pyromania and animal torture
/mutilation is a manifestation of the need for power that serial killers posses and never progress

for nearly 60% of serial killers. These characteristics may later develop into sexual sadism,

Crisis Communication Research Paper
Over the past couple of years public safety agencies have discovered the importance of crisis
communication; meaning that communication is key in crisis situations, whether it be the use of
social media or building strong rapport with the public. Understanding that viewing the public as
an asset instead of a burden can greatly improve the overall response in a crisis situation and lessen
the burden on public safety professionals.

and emphasis for people to stay away because said individual is dangerous. This allows people to

Disadvantages of Social Media
Although social media has improves our rate of communication it is important to remember that it
is not flawless. One example is the age demographic, the older generation might not have twitter or
Facebook therefore, will not receive an agencies emergency post. At the same time the younger
generation (8 16 years) might not be interested in police agencies Facebook pages therefore, they
will also not receive an agencies emergency post.
The major flaw in the relationship between social media and police agencies it that they have to
establish a relationship. People have to physically like or follow a certain group on Facebook or
Twitter it is not automatic. A vast majority of people do not do this, for example the population of
Edmonton as of 2011 was 812,200 yet the amount of people who follow the Edmonton police
service on Facebook is only 89, 555 which equates to

The One Minute Manager By Kenneth Blanchard And Spencer...

readers an innovative idea of one minute management through an allegory of an anonymous man in
search for an effective manager for his management secrets (Blanchard Johnson 26). Throughout the
anonymous man s journey, he learns many lessons, which Blanchard and Johnson have summarized
into the following three essential secrets . First, Blanchard and Johnson advocate One Minute Goal
Setting is the first [secret] and the foundation for One Minute Management(27). One Minute Goal

example, to illustrate how such goal setting method works in practice. After Trenell clearly
identifies the discrepancy between the actual and desired state and the causes, he is able to find a
suitable solution to the problem, making him arriving at his desired state. After introducing the One
Minute Goal Setting as the fundamental of effective management, the authors also demonstrate the
way of doing One Minute Praising the second secret. One Minute Praising is simply:
1. Tell people up front that you are going to let them know how they are doing.
2. Praise people immediately.
3. Tell people what they did right be specific.
4. Tell people how good you feel about what they did right, and how it helps the organization and
the other people who work there.
5. Stop for a moment of silence to let them feel how good you feel.
6. Encourage them to do more of the same.
7. Shake hands or touch people in a way that makes it clear that you support their success in the
organization (44) While presenting the elements in the On Minute Praising, the authors also use a
practical detailed example to emphasize its benefit and importance on encouraging hard work and
good performance. Blanchard and Johnson believe that

BATTLE OF BLAIR MOUNTAIN
Terry M. Deener
West Virginia History HIST225
March 10, 2013
In the early 20th Century, West Virginia was a place where coal barons held immense power.
Coal companies owned towns, mayors and governors. Miners were forced to live on coal camps
and rent houses from them, as well as purchase all of their coal and other items required to survive
from the companies. With this control, mining families where forced to live and work in brutal
conditions. In 1921, after a generation of violent suppression, miners erupted in the largest class
war in US history. For 5 days miners fought the coal barons, over 1 million rounds of ammunition
were fired, this is known as the Battle of Blair Mountain.

Miners along the Little Coal River were among the first to militarize, and began to patrol and the

The troopers were quickly overthrown, apprehended, disarmed, and sent back running from the
miners. Frank Keeney and Fred Mooney, the leaders of the UMWA District 17, called a rally at the
state capitol in Charleston. The two met with Governor Ephraim Morgan, and presented him with a
petition spelling out the miners demands. Governor Morgan rejected the miners demands which
caused the miners to become more restless. Miners began to talk about organizing a march on
Mingo to free the confined miners, end martial law, and organize the county; unfortunately, the only
things standing in their way were Blair Mountain, Logan County, and Sheriff Don Chafin.
The first altercations occurred on August 25, 1921. The majority of miners were still 15 miles
away. President Warren Harding threatened to send in federal troops and Army Martin MB 1

Importance Of Storytelling In Moulin Rouge
Both Baz Luhrmann in the 2001 romantic musical Moulin Rouge and Angela Carter in the 1984

These two texts, both fin de siГЁcle, set in 1899 to the dawning age of the 1900s, feature tales of
extravagant performers, Satine and Fevvers, and their writer lovers, Christian and Walser, on their
journeys of self discovery and revolution. Both texts feature main female characters with theatrical
professions, a Courtesan for an extravagant nightclub and an Aerialist for a travelling circus. These
professions and settings allow for vivid and theatrical characters, with heady description in the novel
and extravagant sets in the film that create lush worlds for the authors to form their stories.
Both texts explore storytelling Moulin Rouge features a play, within a story, as Christian recounts
his time at the Moulin Rouge and creating said play; Spectacular Spectacular. This technique and
continuous flashback allows the audience to see the events as if they were happening for the first
time and adds contextual information to the story, alluding the audience to the plot from the
beginning. Luhrmann also utilizes dramatic irony through the plot of Spectacular Spectacular,
which neatly summarises and foreshadows the plot of Moulin Rouge itself.

The Limits Of Growth ( Tltg )
Introduction
At the time it was written, The Limits to Growth (TLTG) was groundbreaking in its modeling,
analysis and subsequent predictions of future trends. It is a policy paper pushing for sustainable
development, coupled with technological modernisation. This essay will examine TLTG through
an ecocentric lens. First, this paper will briefly summarise ecocentrism. Second, it will discuss
TLTG and its findings in a contemporary context. It will be argued that TLTG ultimately failed in
its ambition, because it utilised a discourse system that did not address key systematic causes of
resource depletion. TLTG recognises human s overconsumption and disregard for the Earth s finite
resources as a cause of exponential growth. However, it very much focuses on the survival of
people rather than the Earth s intrinsic value. An ecocentric perspective argues that each fragment
of the Earth has an intangible value and should be treated accordingly; a concept that TLTG does
not address.
An ecocentric perspective has the propensity to halt the over exploitation that occurs at such an
alarming rate. Ecocentrism should be applied on a systemic, domestic and individual level to avoid
the Earth s further degradation. Indeed, this would require the re structuring of capitalism.
Subsequently, a seemingly radical and alternative discourse system is needed to dominate policy
documents such as TLTG. This essay does not suggest that ecocentric perspectives would be
successful in creating

The Causes Of The Persian And Peloponnesian Wars
From 3000 BCE to 1500 CE their has been many events and people who have had an major
impact on Western European civilization. The event I think had the most important affect is The
Persian and Peloponnesian wars. The Persian war begun because the lonians city states owed
money to Persia and the lonians city states were conquered by Cyrus II of Persia. The reasons for
the Peloponnesian war are the democratic reforms of Cleisthenes but Spartaalways denied this and
Athenian control of the Delian League. Both of these wars affected Greek history.
These wars occurred during and after Pericles and lasted until the end of Alexander the Great. It
ended with the defeat of Athens. The Persian wars were fought because Darius I was out to
attack the land of the Greeks. Their were two Persian wars that occurred. The first was the Battle
of Marathon, under control of Darius I was a battle of Persia vs Athens. During the first war the
Athenians used phalanx formation which meant they had long spears to defeat the Persians. The
second war was when Persia was under control of Xerxes I. The Persians invaded them so badly
that Athens was to weak to fight back on their own. They had to request help from other city states.
Athens asked Sparta to be their allies in war and Sparta agreed to help defeat the Persians. The
Battle of Thermopylae was the next when it was the Persians against the Spartans. They fought the
battle in the mountain of Thermopylae. The Spartans distracted Persian troops

The Best American Essays Of The Century By Robert Atwan
Throughout the 1900 s, America has grown exponentially in its values, struggles, and art. The Best
American Essays of the Century, written by Robert Atwan, showcases the progress this country has
made through a series of essays ordered chronologically. Although many underlying topics existed
in these pieces, three common themes particularly stood out. In How It Feels to Be Colored Me by
Zora Neale Hurston, The Old Stone House by Edmund Wilson, and The Handicapped by Randolph
Bourne, identity is an important subject. Injustice is a clearly shared theme in Coatesville by John
Jay Chapman, The Devil Baby at Hull House by Jane Addams, and Of the Coming of John by
W.E.B. Du Bois. Finally, in Corn pone Opinions by Mark Twain, Tradition and the Individual
Talent by T.S. Eliot, and What Are Masterpieces and Why Are There So Few of Them by
Gertrude Stein, the aspect of non personality and the removal of one s self seems to be commonly
spoken of in terms of creation.
The first motif, identity, appears initially in How It Feels to Be Colored Me where it says, But I
am not tragically colored. There is no great sorrow damned up in my soul, nor lurking behind
my eyes. I do not mind at all. (p. 115) Here, it is obvious that the author holds no shame in her
skin nor self. She is proud of who she is despite the prejudice some hold against her. Hurston
identifies as colored and does not care what others think. Her identity is unwavering. Also
applicable to this idea is

several other such implied superiority claims she had recently seen, realized that it was, indeed,
a popular technique. Steve reminded Betty that there is a distinction between deceptive
advertising, which creates false impressions and misleads a consumer acting reasonably, and
trade puffing, which is exaggerated praise of the product (e.g., Almost Home cookies are the
moistest, chewiest, most perfectly baked cookies ever; NestlГ© makes the very best chocolate
). Puffery is viewed as acceptable in a society of the superlative. Consumers are assumed to see
through the exaggeration or at least engage in a willing suspension of disbelief. He explained to
her that whereas deceptive advertising is illegal, the Federal Trade Commission, which monitors
national advertising for accuracy and fairness in claims, views puffery as legitimate. What s more,
Steve concluded somewhat sarcastically, using your line of reasoning, Betty, we shouldn t
advertise parity products at all, since all brand advertising is designed to create a brand distinction
in the buyer s mind. Advertising is necessary to differentiate yourself from the pack of imitators.
And it helps a small, underdog brand like Great State get a leg up on its big, deeppocketed
competitors. Betty

The Loss Of Habitat Degradation
Loss of habitat is a known contributor to the global reduction of biodiversity within a multitude of
taxonomic assemblages (Fischer and Lindenmayer 2007; Brudvig et al. 2015). Most ecosystems
today are under the influence of human activity and are no longer without human interaction
(Vitousek et al. 1997). The underlining cause of such habitatdegradation can be attributed to
anthropogenic activity (e.g., overexploitation, land clearing for agriculture, urbanization, etc).
Human influence on ecosystems ultimately results in the detachment of a single populated areas
into habitat patches, which, in turn, can hinder the dispersal and overall movement of individuals
within a population (Luo et al. 2016). Interference of dispersal becomes a concern with wildlife
species that exude large home ranges, such as large carnivores (Treves and Karanth 2003). Lack of
connectivity within a wildlife population contributes to inbreeding and intensified demographic
stochasticity, which then affects a population s adaptation capability and can ultimately result in
extinction; a definite threat to species of concern such as the Louisiana black bear (Frankham
2005; Luo et al. 2016).
Although their effectiveness is argued, conservationist implement habitat corridors to combat the
effects of fragmentation (Brudvig et al. 2015). Corridors not only serve to connect habitats but can
also increase home range of a population (Hilty et al. 2006). Machtans et al. (1996) found that
habitat corridors not

How Did Charles Darwin Impact Society

Charles Darwin
Many people get involved in negative aspects in life. Nowadays, it is all about violence and
robberies. To some people, the world is seen as a bad place to be because of all the negative
minded people and the impact they leave on others. Fortunately, not all people are negative
minded; the world has good people who do positive things to impact the world. In fact, Charles
Darwin is a prime example of a good person who made a positive impact on the world. Darwin
signed to become a naturalist, came up with the theory of evolution, and he also wrote a book,
Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection explaining his life s work. It is important that
people know and understand the importance of Darwin and the theory of Evolution and Natural
Selection. Darwin was an English naturalist. According to an article, Darwin established that all
species of life have descended over time from common ancestors, and proposed the scientific
theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that he called natural
selection, in which the struggle for existence has a similar effect to the artificial selection involved
in selective breeding. Darwin s theory of Evolution and Natural Selection shows how humans
developed from one stage to the next. According to the article Darwin s Theory of Evolution: The
Origin of Species by Parmentier, Romain and Probert, Carly, Darwin came to the

Analysing the Financial Performance of Domestic Dog Homes
In this part of my report, I will explain in depth how these ratios are used to monitor the financial
state of Domestic Dogs Homes. I will also assess the company s performance generally.
Part 3: Analysing the financial performance of Domestic Dog Homes
Profitability ratios
Gross Profit Margin:
This ratio is used to assess a company s financial performance by revealing the money left over
from the revenues. Gross Profit Margin also serves as the source for paying additional expenses
and future savings.
According to Domestic Dog Homes profit and loss account, it has obtained a reasonably high
percentage of gross profit which means that the company is doing well and will be able to control

Thus, this ratio helps a business to get rid of bad debts. According to the balance sheet of Domestic
Dog Homes, the debtors have 9 days to pay back to the company which is good as the business
would be able ton get its money back quicker and make the necessary changes to get rid of bad
debts.
Conclusion: Overall it seems that Domestic Dog Homes is financially in an unstable state as it is
either performing reasonably well in order to survive or it is not doing so well is particular areas,
e.g. current ratio and asset turnover.
Part 4: the advantages and limitations of using Ratios
There are several advantages and disadvantages of using ratios to assess and monitor the
financial state of Domestic Dog Homes and they are: The ratios forecast the future: They
indicate whether Domestic Dog Homes will be able to pay its debts and whether it will be able
to survive. For instance the current ratio gives the company an insight of whether it will have
enough money to pay back its debts and whether it will have to gain more money in order to
cover the costs of its expenses as well as its debts. However the disadvantage of this is that these
ratios focuses on specific areas of the company s financial state and does not look at the overall
performance hence it is the duty of Domestic Dog Homes to check whether it is progressing
overall. Strengths and weaknesses: The ratios also point out the strengths and weaknesses of a

Managing You Time
An analogy that underscores the value of assigning, delegating and controlling
Richard T. Christensen, Management Consultant
In any organization, the manager s bosses, peers and subordinates, in return for their active support,
impose some requirements, just as the manager imposes some requirements upon them when they
are drawing upon his or her support. These demands constitute so much of the manager s time that
successful leadership hinges on an ability to control this monkey on the back effectively.
Why is it that managers are typically running out of time while their subordinates are typically
running out of work? In this article, we shall explore the meaning of management time as it relates

Send me a memo on that.
Let us analyze this one. The monkey is now on the subordinate s back because the next move is
his, but it is poised for a leap. Watch that monkey. Johnson dutifully writes the requested memo
and drops it in his out basket. Shortly thereafter, the manager plucks it from his in basket and
reads it. Whose move is it now? The manager s. If he does not make a move soon, he will get a
follow up memo from the subordinate (this is another form of supervision). The longer the
manager delays, the more frustrated the subordinate will become (he ll be spinning his wheels )
and the more guilty the manager will feel (his backlog of subordinate imposed time will be
mounting).
Or suppose once again that at a meeting with a third subordinate, Smith, the manager agrees to
provide all the necessary backing for a public relations proposal he has just asked Smith to
develop. The manager s parting words to her are Just let me know how I can help. Now let us
analyze this. Here the monkey is initially on the subordinate s back. But for how long? Smith
realizes that she cannot let the manager know until her proposal has the manager s approval.

Landfills and their Effects on the Enviroment Essay
Landfills And Their Effects On Humans And The Enviroment
Every year Americans collectively create approximately 208 million tons of municipal solid
waste, which breaks down to 4.3 pounds of waste generated per American per day. In addition to
this normal waste, the United States produces roughly 279 million tons of hazardous waste per
year.1 All of this waste has to go somewhere. Two good methods of waste disposal, infrequently
used, are incineration and recycling. However, any waste that is not recycled or incinerated ends
up in America s landfills. Landfills that are not in proper working order can pose a serious threat to
humans and the environment, but ones that safely store all of their waste may possibly be helpful

The rock should be as nonporous as possible to stop waste from seeping into the groundwater, but
one must be able to predict where the waste will go if it escapes through the liner of the landfill.5
The next layer is the bottom liner of the landfill, which can be made of one or more layers of
natural or synthetic materials. The liner is the landfill s defense to keep the waste out of the
environment. This liner can be made of clay, plastic, or a composite of plastic and clay soil.
Natural liners, made of clays and shales, often crack and allow the waste to enter the environment.
In addition, some chemicals can soak into the clay, thus causing additional harm to the
environment.6 The Geomembranes, liners made of plastic, may seem like they are the best
available today, but many household chemicals can break down the plastic, and it can be easily
punctured.7 Thus, like natural liners, Geomembranes may also allow waste to enter the
environment. Combinations of the different kinds of liners can be more effective than the use of a
single material.8
The leachate collection system is what collects any water that has been contaminated by seeping
through the waste in a landfill. Leachate refers to the water that has been contaminated. If the
system happens to fail for any reason, the leachate can contaminate groundwater, the source of
many communities drinking water.9

Language And Michael Jakobson s Functions Of Language
Functions of language Language is the method of human communication, either spoken or written,
consisting of the use of words in a structured and conventional way.
Language is a source of communication along with it performs many functions that are defined by
many linguists in a different way. They have variety of approaches that are used to explain the
functions of language.
Michael Halliday s functions of language
Michael Alexander Kirkwood Halliday (often M. A. K. Halliday; born 13 April 1925) is a British
born Australian linguist who developed the internationally influential systemic functional linguistic
model of language. His grammatical descriptions go by the name of systemic functional grammar
(SFG).[1] Halliday describes language ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This function is associated with the sender factor. Sender is bold to his/her feelings. Interjections
are found in almost all languages of the world to express happiness and sadness through sounds
and words. It also shows the internal state of a person that how he/she is feeling about an event or
an object.
EXAMPLE
Wow! Muree hills are amazing.
Bravo! You did well in the examination.
THE CONATIVE FUNCTION OF LANGUAGE
Conative function is associated to the receiver of the message. The person is directly called or
addressed and the functions are associated with him. Different characteristics or traits are assigned
to the receiver. Imperatives or vocatives are best examples of conative function of language as the
receiver is clearly addressed.
EXAMPLE
Ahmed is running on the road.
Aslam is driving the car.
THE PHATIC FUNCTION
This function is associated with the channel factor. This function is only for intreraction. This
function is used to start a communication or to end a conversation. The language is used for formal
discussions , greetings and to talk with strangers.

California Cuisine Essay
California leads as the largest agricultural powerhouse and farm income in the United States by
providing for consumers over two hundred types of crops; and represents about 73% of the state s
agricultural revenues collected from crops (Economy of California, 2009). The perception of
Californian cuisine is based on the fact that Californiahas lots of agricultural products from which a
variety of fresh ingredients are made. The foundation of today s Californian cuisine and how it
has flourished in to its current style can be considered very subjective or can be defined as
individual s opinion based on their own experiences .In general, Californian cuisine is characterized

characterization of Californian cuisine.
California is a huge melting pot of different cultures, which not only reflects in California culture
but also in cuisine. The population of California shows dramatic change of size from year to year
especially from Hispanics and Asians population. There are also a growing percentage of
multiracial populations. California is much more diverse than many other states and because of
this degree of diversity has brought together many different walks of life including food. Fusion
cuisine is very popular in California and because of the diversity it brings together many flavors.
One example is Wolfgang Puck, who began his fame as a chef in Southern California with fusion
Chinese and French cuisine. There are many other chefs that have contributed and played a role
to the growing of Californian cuisine. One chef that is famous to the actual birth of Californian
cuisine is Alice Waters, in the early 1970s, and her restaurant known as Chez Panisse in Berkeley,
California (Shearer, 2008). Alice Waters believe that Californian cuisine as cooking should be
based on the finest and freshest seasonal ingredients that are produced sustainable and locally

Prisoners were systematically beaten, unarmed civilians sometimes murdered, whole villages

Gambling and Sports
Should Sports Gambling Be Legalized?
Gambling is a common practice throughout human history, one that appeals to the individual s
desire for gain and offers the thrill of risk or uncertainty. Sports gambling is the wagering of
money or other items of value on the outcome of a sporting event, dependent either wholly or in
part on chance (Thompson, 2008, p. 1). Sports gambling generates billions of dollars annually,
with large events like the Super Bowl or World Series alone able to generate wagers in the
billions of dollars. This research will explore the arguments of those who oppose sports gambling
and those who support it in order to answer the question: Should sports gambling be legalized?

According to Thompson (2008), as of 2008 there were over 150 racetracks operating in the U.S.,
with annual wagers on horse racing totaling more than $16 billion. Dog racing is also legal in a
number of states, but it is not as popular or widespread as horse racing. Proponents of sports
gambling maintain betting on such events generates lucrative revenues, provides thousands of
jobs, and offers sports bettors a means of entertainment and a chance for gain. Despite these
arguments, there are a number of sound arguments put forth by those who remain staunchly
opposed to legalizing sports gambling in the U.S. One of the biggest reasons opponents of
sports gambling are opposed to wagering on sporting events is because of the potential for
sports gambling to result in fixed sporting events and ultimately undermining the integrity of
professional and amateur sports in the U.S. As Thompson (2008) explains, sports gambling
remains illegal and heavily regulated by the government because of the potential for events to be
fixed, or illegally influenced (using bribes or other forms of compensation) (p. 2). It is not that
difficult to see how this might happen, since numerous sports gambling scandals have occurred
in the past. The 1919 World Series was fixed by Chicago White Sox players. Pete Rose was
banned from baseball and denied admittance to the Baseball Hall of Fame because of his admission
to gambling on sporting events while he

Production Overheads Based On Direct Labour Hours Essay
Costing
At present PC4U apportions its production overheads based on direct labour hours. With a range
of products available and opportunity for customising these products individually to meet the
retailer s needs, this report aims to assess the effectiveness of this traditional method of allocating
production overheads. It will discuss the drawbacks of the current approach used by PC4U, as well
as an alternative approach in the Activity Based Costing system, which is intended to overcome the
weakness of the traditional method by having various pools of costs and then allocating each pool s
costs on the basis of its root cause. (Averkamp 2007) As well as comparing the benefits and
drawbacks of these costing systems to determine what recommendations should be given regarding
the approach PC4U should adopt, the report shall also discuss the impact an activity based
management system may have on the company.
The current method of apportioning production overheads based on direct labour hours can be
described as a traditional approach to product costing. In a manufacturing company s financial
statements, each item produced must be allocated some of the production overheads to make the
statements compliant. Sometimes the individual costs of these items can be calculated incorrectly
based on overall production overhead and the system of allocating in place, however the overall
financial statement can still be accurate. This traditional method of allocating the production

The West Point Cheating Scandal Essay
The West Point Cheating Scandal
Description:
In April of 1976 it was found that there was a possibility that over half of the junior class at West
Point Academy had violated the West Point honor code by cheating on a case assignment. The
honor code states A cadet will not lie, cheat, or steal, nor tolerate those who do. This was by far the
largest violation of the honor code in West Point history and presented some unusual challenges to
the administration. As the year dragged on it was found that more and more students possibly had
cheated on the assignment and was also becoming a public relations nightmare in the press and
internally to the Army branch of the United States military.
The honor code at West Point was... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The empowerment and enforcement of the code has always been up to the ethics committee
which is made up of cadets itself. This had always been to exert pressure on all students to comply
with the code by means of having to face your peers in hearings.
The one part of the honor code that was a staple of controversy was the end that says no cadet
will tolerate any action that violates the honor code. This implied that if you knew anything
about a violation that you were just as liable as the offender himself. This part of the code was
troubling for many considering you were dealing with comrades who were training next to you in
close quarters and with serious future implications. This can be a very precarious situation for
many and by holding students to it can promote more honor code violations. The problem here is
the fact that anyone can make mistakes and in the situations involving the honor code West Point
has taken the honor out of supporting your comrades as well as the honor of admitting to your
mistakes. They have done this by issuing expulsion to all violators. It can be said that someone
who can admit to their mistakes knowing the consequences that will ensue is of a stronger moral
background than one who may not violate the code in the first place or someone who does not get
caught. (Note: the current honor code allows for reacceptance to the academy after violations and

This Paper Offers A Critical Reflection And Analysis Of
This paper offers a critical reflection and analysis of my genogram. My family consists of two
completely different families thrown together who coexist together without much intermingling.
When viewed as one unit, I would describe my family as a loose knit, hardworking, Black middle
class, southern, Christian family. I use the term loose knit because my family is not close at all. We
can go months without talking to or seeing each other and there is nothing wrong with that. There
have been many times I have been in conversation with family friends and find out information
about my family because we do not interact with family members often. The anchor that each of us
is close to is our mother, Sandra Smith Graves.
Black middle class is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another southern custom in my family is the unspoken expectation that nothing or nobody comes
before family. Though we are distant as a family when our family is involved everything else
becomes secondary. The last custom that my family places a huge emphasis on is the honoring and
respect for elders.
The last way I want to describe my family is as Christian. All of my family members are
practicing Christians. My father s side of the family has traditionally been Baptist, while my
mother s side of the family has deep roots in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Through
doing this assignment, I found out that my maternal grandfather was an AME pastor. Church has
always been a pillar of my family. As children, we had no choice but to attend church because it is
what our parents felt was best for us.
Now that I have offered analysis and reflection on the extended family field of my family system
on a macro level, I want to provide a microscopic look as it relates to individuals and individual
relationships within my family system. As previously mentioned my family tends to have a level
of homeostasis that is comfortable with distance and long periods of not interacting. This does not
mean we do not love each other; we are just comfortable loving at a distance. This is connected to
one of our unspoken rules and expectations, which is do not feel bad if I do not call you or interact

separate clauses and parts of a sentence to make it clear and easier for the reader to understand.
Nichomachean Ethicsis known to be one of Aristotles most important books on ethics. It follows
Aristotle s definitions of different concepts like: Moral virtues, good wills, and justice. According
to Aristotle, a moral virtue is a concept that depends on our behaviors, actions, and determines our
character which helps us achieve a good life. The book is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Punctuations are important as the meaning of a sentence depends on the punctuation that is used
and as it helps bring the right type of expressions into writing. Without the use of different types of
punctuations; the writing would sound vague, incomplete, and difficult to understand. The use of
Commas is important as it adds a meaning to the language that Aristotle uses in his concept of
moral virtues. Aristotle states that, Excellence, then, being of these two kinds, intellectual and
moral, intellectual excellence owes its birth and growth mainly to instruction, and so requires time
and experience, while moral excellence is the result of habit or custom, and has accordingly in our
language received a name formed by a slight change from ethos (Aristotle, 34). In this quote, the
commas add a meaning to it as it separates the ideas and gives a pause between the sentences and
words.

Another form of research is the consumer based research.
Primary research involves collection of data directly from the consumers. It is quite an expensive
method of research though quite effective. Customer feedbacks are collected through telephonic
interviews, surveys and group discussions. The primary research is further categorized into
quantitative and qualitative research.
Quantitative research: In quantitative researches, surveys are conducted to collect numerical data.
Most of the surveys include close ended questions which are less time consuming. It is quite easy
to collect such data as consumers tend to be more co operative. The collected data is further
analyzed for a proper conclusion.

Lynching Case
Lynching falls into the category of a Holocaust because Blacks were hung and lynched for trivial
offenses or no reason at all, but mostly racial prejudice. They could have been lynched for arguing
with a white man, being too close to a white woman or even attempting to vote. Additionally,
lynching happened at large throughout the United States. It was not a sectional crime or a Southern
phenomenon. Lynching cases could have been found in Southern, as well as, Western and Northern
states. Moreover, their publicity and advertising was massively promoted and published. An
outrageous crime was turned into a social show meant to entertain some and frighten others. How

POLI 310
Policy Memorandum: Title XI
September 10th, 2016
Students Seek Change for Title XI Title XI at Glance Every time an American citizen turns on the
news, there is a headline involving a sexual harassment case or unfortunately, cases of rape. Most
news stories are focused on a questionable school policy that fails to have reasonable judgment and
punishment for students involved. Recent cases in the news, like the Brock Turner case has turned
viral due to the publicity and exposure it had among young people. This particular case was
something that was so real to students in both high school and college, that millennial s began to
alter their perception of how insensitively harassment cases are handled. The Title XI policy that
is being enforced in school systems now, is a policy that has been up for debate by those who
enforce the policy and those the policy effects for years now. The policy belongs to the education
amendments of 1972. One might say that the policy is outdated. Although the policy has seen
some updates to its history, the language of the act is irrelevant in context to current situations the
school systems are facing now. The question remains, how does one change the policy and what
policies need to be made. The policy itself states that, No person in the United States shall, on the
basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to
discrimination under any education program or

Women Leaving Her Husband Analysis
Butler explains to her readers the ample reasons why wives of the medieval time period would
decide to leave their husbands. In fact, on page 338 of her article, Butler writes, The goal of this
paper is to provide a more comprehensive perspective of husband desertion, including the risks
involved in deserting one s husband, the wifes motivations, and the logistics of desertion (Butler
338). She begins her article with some background information in hopes to enlighten her readers
that at this point in history, men had all the power in any marriage. Following the brief history of
the misogyny found in medieval marriages, Butler uses the rest of her article to explain to her
readers the trials and tribulations these wives had to go through, the risk of others knowing she
wanted to leave, and what made the wives want to leave at all. Butler first chooses to explain what
the risks were when a wife left her husband during the medieval era. Due to the misogyny found in
medieval marriages, if a womandecided to leave her husband, she had to be well aware of the
consequences that would follow. For instance, Butler points out to her audience that if a woman
decided to leave her husband, then must live with the label of adulteress. This label guarantees that
this woman would never be able to claim any inheritance in... Show more content on

  • 2. Summary Of The Loss Of The CreatureBy Richard... How someone looks, acts, or is seen means a lot in Rodriguez s society. Complexion is an excerpt from the memoir, Hunger of Memories, which Richard Rodriguez has wrote. The essay, The Loss of the Creature was written by Percy Walker who uses many examples to show different outcomes of different situations. Percy s essay can be related to the chapter Complexion from Hunger of Memories by connecting the struggle of a person with examples of Rodriguez s struggle throughout his childhood. Percy discusses the struggle for the person in which Rodriguez explores throughout the chapter, Complexion in his memoir. The struggle for the person that Percy describes in The Loss of the Creature is displayed by Rodriguez s manliness which is being nullified from him. Rodriguez s father does not think that Rodriguez is manly. His father thought that he was not manly because of two things; he did not know what real work was and that his hands were soft. Rodriguez had felt like his manliness was being stripped of him because, At such times I suspected that education was making me effeminate. (Rodriguez 457) Rodriguez s mother was proud of all her children for getting an education even if he wasn t. His father and him may think getting an education is effeminate but it can be manly. School can give you rough hands by spending hours writing with a pencil and getting callus . Rodriguez can experience hard work through a job that he s earned by working hard in school. Then came a responsive literary subculture, understood via the work of beatniks such as Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs. • 4. The Truth In Edgar Allan Poe s The Raven In today s world, the news is constantly shrouded in controversy. Stories of violence and crime are everywhere. Hidden amongst the plethora of articles, there s bound to be a report without a shred of truth in it. As smart as people like to think they are, mistakes in judgement do occur from time to time. A mere glimpse of a shocking headline is enough to throw someone off. Given enough intimidating and persuasive words, it can be quite easy to mislead someone. When a person is overcome with emotion, it can be even more difficult to distinguish what is real or not. Edgar Allan Poes most prominent poem, The Raven, gives an example. In The Raven, the Raven is not actually real, but rather, it is a manifestation of the speaker s built up vexation; this is relevant to 2017, since people are easily deceived when they are frustrated. The first implication that the Raven is not real is in the beginning of the poem when the bird appears spontaneously. At first, the speaker only hears a tapping at his door. Logically, he assumes that the noise is that of a random visitor. Upon opening the door, however, he sees [darkness] there and nothing more (Poe 24). The speaker returns to his chamber, but the sound continues, this time coming from his window. Instead of finding nothing once more, he is surprised to find a raven fly in and [perch] upon a bust of Pallas just above [his] chamber door (Poe 41). It is hard to explain how the Raven changes its position so quickly. Because ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Agenda Setting Theroy Agenda setting theory Introduction: There is no question that communication is an important element in our life. We can learn how to communicate either by our experiences which probably will take a longtime to learn or by studying the experiences and theories of others. In Communication theory we have learned many theories that are very important to understanding human Communication. Communication is not more important nowadays than before because it s always been an important aspect of human existence. These days communication style has been developed and has changed dramatically due to the media and the technology. Communications between cultures have never been better than today. A consequence of the development of the media technology is that media now plays a major influence on societies and in some countries the media is considered the fourth branch of government. In my discussion, I have selected agenda setting theory, which is explained by Donald Shaw, Maxwell McCombs, and their colleagues. I chose this theory because of its significance and because it has more explanation of what can be explained beyond the TV shows and reports. Media and freedom of speech is an important thing in America, however I think there is a real communication problem in the way media portrays the Arab World to the American people. There is a misperception in America about the Arab world and this problem is a result of the way that the media portrays events and the way that they pick ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Burning American Flag Persuasive Essay Whether someone is watching the news or simply flipping through their social media pages, one thing they will certainly see is protesting of some kind. Recently, the first thing that these protestors want to do it set fire to the American flag. Why would they do this? Why would they burn a symbol of the freedom they are using to demonstrate their frustrations? Burning the American flag is wrong not only legally but also ethically and therefore should not be protected under freedom of speech. When asked why, most protestors who want to burn the American flag respond with an answer such as it s our first amendment right. Even though the U. S. Supreme court ruled that burning the American flag is protected under the first amendment right to freedom of expression, the reality is that it is against the law to desecrate the American flag. According to 18 U.S. Code В§ 700 Whoever knowingly mutilates, defaces, physically defiles, burns, maintains on the floor or ground, or tramples upon any flag of the United States shall be fined under this title or imprisoned for not more than one year, or both. This clearly shows that the legislative branch saw that is was wrong to burn the American flag. While the judicial branch said, in United States v. Eichman, the Supreme Court once again ruled that burning the flag was an example of constitutionally protected free speech (Rothman) they made it clear that no person can be legally charged under this code it doesn t change that fact ... • 7. Sino Soviet Relations To what extent was the deterioration in Sino Soviet relations in the years 1958 69 due to personal rivalries? The deterioration in Sino Soviet relations between 1958 1969 is due to a number of different factorssome historians argue that conflicting personal rivalries between Mao and Khrushchev contributed to the split until 1964, however other historians argue that other factors influenced the deterioration. For example both sides were ideologically different, this can be seen as they were both pursuing different methods of achieving communism, and during many occasions they disagreed with each other. However the most significant factor causing the split was their conflicting national interests, as although without the existing personal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This shows a clear confliction in national interests, and a cause for a deterioration in Sino Soviet relations was the invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. Due to this, Mao introduced his policy of active defence towards the USSR and this was because of his paranoia that the USSR could try to assert dominance over China. This shows a clear confliction of national interests as the USSR was preventing China from expansion and this added to the initial ideological and personality disputes stated above. Therefore the deterioration in Sino Soviet relations was due to conflicting national interests more than personality and ideological clashes as from this, both sides clearly wanted different things, conflict between them was inevitable. Finally another argument that some historians put forward is the Ussuri River dispute in 1969 where both sides shared a common border. This was one of the most important reasons for the deterioration in relations because it was the first time both sides came into direct conflict with the other during this in which on the first day, over 30 Soviet soldiers died. This showed a direct cause for deterioration in relations, because two countries cannot be allies if they are constantly at fighting with one another. These border disputes had been ongoing for many years, showing that a fundamental cause for the deterioration in relations between the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Pawnee Rangers Essay To demonstrate how this show has managed to weave positive feminist ideals into every aspect of the show, it is not hard to find examples in almost every episode. Truly one of the strongest example of this takes place is the episode The Pawnee Ranger, where Leslie fights the discriminating policies of the males only Pawnee Rangers, which is led by her boss Ron Swanson. They proceed to fight over their rivaling youth camp organizations, with Ron s spartan Pawnee Rangers, who learn to appreciate fishing, camping, and complete silence, up against Leslie s supportive and indulgent Pawnee Goddesses, who practice arts and crafts and self confidence building exercises. • 10. The Science Fiction Film Genre Essay Science Fiction Films The science fiction film genre has been around almost as long as movies have, but like the cinema it is still a fairly young art form. This genre came into existence shortly after the invention of the movie camera in 1888 and has endured for over one hundred years. Science fiction is adaptive; it changes with the times and this trend can be seen in its incorporation of other genres, cultural history and technology. This essay will attempt to define the genre, chronicle the history and evolution, and explore its relation to technology. This is in general and in the cinema. When discussing the science fiction film genre a problem occurs. The distinction between science fiction and other genres is not always clear cut. Many movies span between the science fiction genre and other genres. Movies such as The Ring (2002) or the Alien series (1979, 1986, 1992, and 1997) illustrate how the distinction between science fiction and horror films can be obscure. Some comedies, such as Mars Attacks (1996) and Back to the Future (1985), are very much science fiction. In fact there is an example of a science fiction film fitting into almost any genre. Starship Troopers (1997) parallels a war film and Outland (1981) resembles a western in many respects. The characteristics that define the science fiction genre can be difficult to pin down. A genre such as the western has easily identifiable characteristics such as cowboys, guns, the Wild West, and bad guys with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is a policy paper pushing for sustainable development, coupled with technological modernisation. This essay will examine TLTG through an ecocentric lens. First, this paper will briefly summarise ecocentrism. Second, it will discuss TLTG and its findings in a contemporary context. It will be argued that TLTG ultimately failed in its ambition, because it utilised a discourse system that did not address key systematic causes of resource depletion. TLTG recognises human s overconsumption and disregard for the Earth s finite resources as a cause of exponential growth. However, it very much focuses on the survival of people rather than the Earth s intrinsic value. An ecocentric perspective argues that each fragment of the Earth has an intangible value and should be treated accordingly; a concept that TLTG does not address. An ecocentric perspective has the propensity to halt the over exploitation that occurs at such an alarming rate. Ecocentrism should be applied on a systemic, domestic and individual level to avoid the Earth s further degradation. Indeed, this would require the re structuring of capitalism. Subsequently, a seemingly radical and alternative discourse system is needed to dominate policy documents such as TLTG. The event I think had the most important affect is The Persian and Peloponnesian wars. The Persian war begun because the lonians city states owed money to Persia and the lonians city states were conquered by Cyrus II of Persia. The reasons for the Peloponnesian war are the democratic reforms of Cleisthenes but Spartaalways denied this and Athenian control of the Delian League. Both of these wars affected Greek history. These wars occurred during and after Pericles and lasted until the end of Alexander the Great. It ended with the defeat of Athens. The Persian wars were fought because Darius I was out to attack the land of the Greeks. Their were two Persian wars that occurred. The first was the Battle of Marathon, under control of Darius I was a battle of Persia vs Athens. During the first war the Athenians used phalanx formation which meant they had long spears to defeat the Persians. The second war was when Persia was under control of Xerxes I. The Persians invaded them so badly that Athens was to weak to fight back on their own. They had to request help from other city states. The Best American Essays of the Century, written by Robert Atwan, showcases the progress this country has made through a series of essays ordered chronologically. Although many underlying topics existed in these pieces, three common themes particularly stood out. In How It Feels to Be Colored Me by Zora Neale Hurston, The Old Stone House by Edmund Wilson, and The Handicapped by Randolph Bourne, identity is an important subject. Injustice is a clearly shared theme in Coatesville by John Jay Chapman, The Devil Baby at Hull House by Jane Addams, and Of the Coming of John by W.E.B. Du Bois. Finally, in Corn pone Opinions by Mark Twain, Tradition and the Individual Talent by T.S. Eliot, and What Are Masterpieces and Why Are There So Few of Them by Gertrude Stein, the aspect of non personality and the removal of one s self seems to be commonly spoken of in terms of creation. The first motif, identity, appears initially in How It Feels to Be Colored Me where it says, But I am not tragically colored. There is no great sorrow damned up in my soul, nor lurking behind my eyes. I do not mind at all. (p. 115) Here, it is obvious that the author holds no shame in her skin nor self. • 22. The Loss Of Habitat Degradation Loss of habitat is a known contributor to the global reduction of biodiversity within a multitude of taxonomic assemblages (Fischer and Lindenmayer 2007; Brudvig et al. 2015). Most ecosystems today are under the influence of human activity and are no longer without human interaction (Vitousek et al. 1997). The underlining cause of such habitatdegradation can be attributed to anthropogenic activity (e.g., overexploitation, land clearing for agriculture, urbanization, etc). Human influence on ecosystems ultimately results in the detachment of a single populated areas into habitat patches, which, in turn, can hinder the dispersal and overall movement of individuals within a population (Luo et al. 2016). Interference of dispersal becomes a concern with wildlife species that exude large home ranges, such as large carnivores (Treves and Karanth 2003). Lack of connectivity within a wildlife population contributes to inbreeding and intensified demographic stochasticity, which then affects a population s adaptation capability and can ultimately result in extinction; a definite threat to species of concern such as the Louisiana black bear (Frankham 2005; Luo et al. 2016). Although their effectiveness is argued, conservationist implement habitat corridors to combat the effects of fragmentation (Brudvig et al. 2015). Corridors not only serve to connect habitats but can also increase home range of a population (Hilty et al. 2006). Machtans et al. (1996) found that habitat corridors not ... Darwin signed to become a naturalist, came up with the theory of evolution, and he also wrote a book, Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection explaining his life s work. It is important that people know and understand the importance of Darwin and the theory of Evolution and Natural Selection. Darwin was an English naturalist. According to an article, Darwin established that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors, and proposed the scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that he called natural selection, in which the struggle for existence has a similar effect to the artificial selection involved in selective breeding. The liner is the landfill s defense to keep the waste out of the environment. This liner can be made of clay, plastic, or a composite of plastic and clay soil. Natural liners, made of clays and shales, often crack and allow the waste to enter the environment. In addition, some chemicals can soak into the clay, thus causing additional harm to the environment.6 The Geomembranes, liners made of plastic, may seem like they are the best available today, but many household chemicals can break down the plastic, and it can be easily punctured.7 Thus, like natural liners, Geomembranes may also allow waste to enter the environment. The soldiers of Charlie Company became demoralized as they lost nearly one third of their troop in two months. Many in the company had given in to an easy pattern of violence. Prisoners were systematically beaten, unarmed civilians sometimes murdered, whole villages burned, and wells poisoned. Rapes were not uncommon. Many military leaders encouraged and rewarded kills in an effort to produce impressive body counts that could be reported to Saigon as an indication of progress. On March 16, 1968. Gambling is a common practice throughout human history, one that appeals to the individual s desire for gain and offers the thrill of risk or uncertainty. Sports gambling is the wagering of money or other items of value on the outcome of a sporting event, dependent either wholly or in part on chance (Thompson, 2008, p. 1). Sports gambling generates billions of dollars annually, with large events like the Super Bowl or World Series alone able to generate wagers in the billions of dollars. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Thompson (2008), as of 2008 there were over 150 racetracks operating in the U.S., with annual wagers on horse racing totaling more than $16 billion. Dog racing is also legal in a number of states, but it is not as popular or widespread as horse racing. Proponents of sports gambling maintain betting on such events generates lucrative revenues, provides thousands of jobs, and offers sports bettors a means of entertainment and a chance for gain. Despite these arguments, there are a number of sound arguments put forth by those who remain staunchly opposed to legalizing sports gambling in the U.S. One of the biggest reasons opponents of sports gambling are opposed to wagering on sporting events is because of the potential for sports gambling to result in fixed sporting events and ultimately undermining the integrity of professional and amateur sports in the U.S. As Thompson (2008) explains, sports gambling remains illegal and heavily regulated by the government because of the potential for events to be fixed, or illegally influenced (using bribes or other forms of compensation) (p. 2). It is not that difficult to see how this might happen, since numerous sports gambling scandals have occurred in the past. The 1919 World Series was fixed by Chicago White Sox players. With a range of products available and opportunity for customising these products individually to meet the retailer s needs, this report aims to assess the effectiveness of this traditional method of allocating production overheads. It will discuss the drawbacks of the current approach used by PC4U, as well as an alternative approach in the Activity Based Costing system, which is intended to overcome the weakness of the traditional method by having various pools of costs and then allocating each pool s costs on the basis of its root cause. (Averkamp 2007) As well as comparing the benefits and drawbacks of these costing systems to determine what recommendations should be given regarding the approach PC4U should adopt, the report shall also discuss the impact an activity based management system may have on the company. The current method of apportioning production overheads based on direct labour hours can be described as a traditional approach to product costing. In a manufacturing company s financial statements, each item produced must be allocated some of the production overheads to make the statements compliant. This had always been to exert pressure on all students to comply with the code by means of having to face your peers in hearings. The one part of the honor code that was a staple of controversy was the end that says no cadet will tolerate any action that violates the honor code. This implied that if you knew anything about a violation that you were just as liable as the offender himself. This part of the code was troubling for many considering you were dealing with comrades who were training next to you in close quarters and with serious future implications. This can be a very precarious situation for many and by holding students to it can promote more honor code violations. The problem here is the fact that anyone can make mistakes and in the situations involving the honor code West Point has taken the honor out of supporting your comrades as well as the honor of admitting to your mistakes. They have done this by issuing expulsion to all violators. It can be said that someone who can admit to their mistakes knowing the consequences that will ensue is of a stronger moral background than one who may not violate the code in the first place or someone who does not get caught.
