Genetically Modified Organisms And Its Effect On The Consumer
For soy and sugar beet [crops], in 2013 genetically modified varieties represented over 90% of the
total [of American soybean and sugarbeet crops]; for maize and cotton it was exactly 90%. Genetically
modified organisms, or commonly abbreviated GMOs, are plants that have had their DNA genetically
altered to create amicable, or abolish undesirable traits. As previously said in the statistic sourced from
gmo compass.org, GMOs are dominant to their counter product, organic foods. On the topic, many
effects are produced from GMOs, not only health effects upon the consumer, but economic effects,
and inflated population rates. Elaborating upon the the economic, as well as population effect, GMOs
are modified to have a higher production rate per plant, making them cheaper to produce, and
inevitably cheaper in market stocks. Populations tend to increase dramatically from a higher food
supply accommodating the demands for a constant flow of food, and expansion of that flow.
Alternatively, many concerns come from the beneficiary health and risks that accompany manipulated
organisms. Two key consternations derive from allergies developed from GMOs, and linkage to
disease in humans. Other external arguments concur with the controversy of adjusted genes. Examples
of this is questioning the morality of permuting natural substances for the selfishness of mankind, as
well as the destruction of biodiversity. Theoretically, with support from a variety of different sources,

Ocean Conveyor Belt
Overview/Description Demonstrates how water has different densities at different temperatures and
salinity levels, then ties this in to the Ocean Conveyor Belt, a deep ocean circulation driven by
temperature and salinity that carries water around the world. Background Thermohaline circulation or
the Ocean Conveyor Belt is responsible for the large scale ocean circulation. It is driven by global
density differences caused by surface heat, and variations in salinity. As the water moves throughout
the globe with total transit times of up to 1000+ years, the water masses transport heat energy, and
matter (dissolved substances, gases, and nutrients) around the globe. The density of ocean water is not
the same throughout the global oceans, but varies significantly and discretely. Warm seawater expands
and is therefore less dense than cooler seawater. Moreover, saltier water is denser than fresher water
because of the dissolved salt that fills the space between water molecules, resulting in greater ... Show

In these regions, winds support evaporative cooling of the ocean water, which makes it denser due to
thermal processes, but also by removing water molecules resulting in a higher salinity. Formation of
sea ice also increases salinity as fresh/pure water is preferentially frozen first, expelling saltier brine.
These cold, saltier masses of water sink relatively rapidly over a small area. These waters of the North
Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) sinks and flows southward along the continental slope of North and
South America toward Antarctica and flows eastward around the Antarctic mixing with Antarctic
waters. The water circulation then flows northward at dept into the three ocean basins. During this
northward flow, they slowly begin to warm and mix with overlying waters and as a result, rise toward
the surface at a rate of about 1 centimeter per day over most of the

Ordinary People Pay Disparity
University of the People Introduction Over half a century ago, the pay disparity between the regular
employee and a multimillion dollar corporation s chief executive officer, according to Mackey
(20140), was at such a low ebb compare to this modern day and time. Life, then, was simple.
Expenditure was at a bare minimum. Most necessities, especially food, were readily available. People
spent less and saved more. The pay gap, to say the least, was appreciable. Nearly six decades ago, the
salary gap kept widening. Those who own the means of production aren t saying anything. The
employees continue to live on starvation wage struggling to make ends meet. What is wrong with us?
The world is getting very unequal. Ordinary people have demonstrated, conducted sit in, and
petitioned governments and international organizations to fix the issue of inequality in all areas of life.
So far, they ve made no headway. Protests like Occupy Wall Street, Occupy Toronto, lack Lives
Matter, the perennial G 20s and its offshoots have so far fallen on deaf ears. These protests called on
business and political leaders to do something about the gap between the haves and the haves not. ...

The disparity is hurting the ordinary citizens. It s affecting them emotionally, psychologically and
physically. If the current pay structure remains in place, it tends to demotivate workers, and
production and its quality will be affected. The current policies must change. Corporations should
begin to chart new plans to reduce the compensation gaps between their CEOs and the ordinary
workers. The world is changing every day for the better. Wages of employees are lower than in 10
years ago (Mishel, L., Bivens, J., Gould, E., Shiertholz, H.

The Incredible Hulk Research Paper
With my eyes wide shut, the following three scientists come to mind:
First, Aristotle (384BC 322BC) Great early Greek scientist who made many researches in the natural
sciences including botany, zoology, physics, astronomy, chemistry, and meteorology, and
geometry.Second, Albert Einstein was a German born physicist who developed the general theory of
relativity, Won Nobel Prize in Physics (1921) for his discovery of the Photoelectric effect, which
formed basis of Quantum Theory. He is considered the most influential physicist of the 20th century.
Third, Sir Isaac Newton (1642 1726) Newton was a polymath who made investigations into a whole

Tudor (1989) notes that between 1951 and 1964 scientists were often portrayed in film as being
responsible for saving as well as endangering humanity. In films of that era science is dangerous, but
science also provides the most appropriate means of dealing with the dangers that science unleashes.
Scientists might, for example, inadvertently create mutant monsters, but scientists also most
commonly figure out how to eliminate the threats they have created. In these films, science is
dangerous but efficacious. In contrast, more recent entertainment films portray scientists as being
unable to solve problems or eliminate threats to humanity. Instead, laypersons most commonly save
the day (Tudor 1989). Scientific expertise is devalued in these films, and may even be portrayed as a
handicap of sorts. In horror films like C.H.U.D. and the 1988 remake of The Blob, laypersons rid the
world of dangerous creatures, but only after the laypersons outwit scientists who either fail to
understand the dangers or who have a vested interest in perpetuating the dangers. In films like E.T.
and Splash, laypersons save the lives of kind and intelligent creatures by rescuing them from scientific
captivity. In these and many other recent films, science no longer provides resources for

Memory Loss Research Paper
I wasn t able to look at the positive aspects of a relationship with someone who passed until I was able
to start to really grieve their death and the loss of the future with them before I was able to truly look
at the positive aspects of our relationship and the memories of. It was too painful to look at until I
started to grieve. The book also mentioned that some children may want to make something in
memory of the loss of the individual. It could be in the form of a collage, memory box, a memory
book, a drawing, a poem, a short movie, a song, a play, a painting, whatever the child feels like
making is good. Some children may even ask others to get involved in the project. Something that
stood out for me in the book as well was that children are encouraged to hold a memorial service. This
is where the child can include their loved ones if desired to share what they would like to share, their
stories, their feelings, whatever they want to share. When my niece had passed, it was suggested by
the grief counselor that my nephew do this and he did. He did this at the cemetery about one month,
after she was buried (when he was ready). He talked about how he was going to miss seeing her.

Persuasive Essay On Global Citizenship
In today s world, it is very important for every person to demonstrate exceptional citizenship as it
proves beneficial to the development of the world. In the video documentary, The Cove, Ric O Barry
and his team of activists are protesting the dolphin slaughter occurring in Taiji, Japan. Their goal is to
reduce the number of dolphins killed each year and hopefully stop the slaughter entirely. Mr. Barry
and his team, are model global citizens as they abide by the law, are extremely informed about the
cause they are protesting, and display purposeful and active citizens greatly through their work.
Therefore, Ric O Barry and his team of activists are remarkable examples of global citizens based off
of the four characteristics describing a good global citizen.
Ric O Barry and his team demonstrate excellent global citizenship through their care and concern for
the endangered dolphins in Japan, even if they do not necessarily abide the law. Firstly, the only
situations in which Mr. Barry and/or the activists feel the need to break the law is when they are trying
to help the dolphins, and the law is unfortunately restricting them. In the video documentary, The
Cove, Ric O Barry is arrested multiple times for trying to free captive dolphins in Florida and on the
Island of Bimini. He shows good civic behavior here because he genuinely cares for animals and the
well being of the environment, thus providing credible reasoning for breaking the cruel laws that
allow companies to keep animals in captivity. Furthermore, Ric O Barry and his team of activists are
law abiding citizens because they ensure that they do not hurt anyone in the process of protesting and
they continuously cooperate with the police and other government officials. For example, when
Mandy Rae Cruickshank and Kirk Krack visit the cove for the first time, they try to keep the
encounter with the Japanese fisherman peaceful even though the fishermen are butting chests with
them. Another example would be the numerous times Taiji officials interrogate Mr. Barry about the
actions he takes against the reoccurring dolphin slaughter, and how he always complies with them,
respectfully answering all their questions. This proves that Ric and his team are

Moneyball
Compared to most other professional sports leagues in the United States, there is a lot of financial
disparity between small market and large market teams in Major League Baseball. Moneyball: The Art
of Winning an Unfair Game is a novel about how an unlikely general manager, Billy Beane, used
unconventional statistical analysis to enable the Oakland Athletics to outplay much wealthier teams in
the league. The problem faced by Beane and the Athletics was competing against large market teams
that were able to afford the services of the best players in the league. Through the use of sabermetrics,
Beane and his staff found a solution to overcome their limited budget ... Show more content on

Baseball is a true team sport .
Sabermetrics, the statistical method applied by Bean and his acquaintance Paul DePodesta deviated
from these overused and overvalued measures, and focused on team players, not volatile superstars
(Moneyball). Sabermetrics revolved around the analysis of undervalued statistics primarily on base
percentage, the number of times a player swings at the first pitch, and the average number of pitches
per at bat a player sees (Moneyball). With this tactic, Billy Beane and the Oakland Athletics were able
to win many more games than they would have if they were constrained by overvalued players. Beane
was able to use this ingenious method of statistical analysis to discern the unique talents of
undervalued players that did not meet the statistical criteria of big market teams. With a very
specifically assembled team, whereby some players were even forced to switch positions, the Oakland
Athletics had seemed to overcome the odds.
A prime example of the potential success of sabermetrics was seen in a player named Scott Hatteberg.
Hatteberg spent most of his career lingering around the Boston Red Sox organization as a catcher both
in the minor leagues and in the major leagues (Moneyball). Hatteberg was seen as a very average
catcher and hitter throughout the big leagues. He did his job well enough, however he did not stand
out in popular statistical categories such as homeruns and RBIs. Unacknowledged by the Red Sox,
however,

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS)
The Edmonton Police Service s (EPS) vision is as follows: To make Edmonton the safest major city in
Canada and for the EPS to be recognized as a leader in policing (Edmonton Police Service, 2014). In
comparison, the city of Edmonton s vision can be summarized as follows: by the year 2040,
Edmonton is an energy driven city mindful of renewable energy sources; Edmonton is a design city,
rich in urban, architectural, and environmental design; Edmonton s streets are safe to walk and there is
accessible transportation; Edmonton links the continent with the north and Asia and is a city of

ValuesThe values outlined by the EPS are integrity, accountability, respect, innovation, courage, and
community (Edmonton Police Service, 2014). For the city of Edmonton s values I referred to their
conditions of success which they outline as follows: organizational capacity (for example, fiscal and
human); sound management practice and process; enabling infrastructure (for example, information
technology); and, effective communication (The Way Ahead, 2018). Comparison of ValuesObviously,
the EPS find it imperative to be a professional police force that is accountable in their actions and
integral in their methods. Also, they find it important to be courageous and treat people with respect.
The city of Edmonton mentioned effective communication and sound management practices as a
value towards creating their mission. This is similar to the EPS values of integrity, accountability, and
respect. In order for both entities to meet their outlined missions / visions they will be required to
ensure that among their employees and management there is an effective dialogue that promotes
accountability amongst their employees. Furthermore, the city of Edmonton s value of organizational
capacity aligns with EPS value of innovation. Essentially, EPS will need to expand their technologies,

Theme Of Power In Watership Down
First there are many different different systems of power in the book Watership Down.
There are four different warens with very different systems of power. The Sandleford warren is a
warren where power is those with a title. The Watership Down and Cowslip warrens are both warrens
where power is those with wit. The Efrafa warren is a warren where power is strength. Power is
distributed between the rabbits by those with wit, strength, and a title. Additionally In the Sandleford
warren power is given to those with a title. For example in the sandleford warren fiver and hazel go to
the Threarah to suggest that everyone should leave but he turns them down. Because Thererah doesn t
like anything he hasn t thought of for himself. This represents the fact that the Threarah doesn t want
to lose his title by people hearing that someone else is coming up with ideas that isn t him. Second
Hazel is not large enough to become a warrior and join the Owsla deeming him an Outsider. This

Methicillin Resistant Enterococci
Similar to the majority of living organisms, bacteria are able to adapt and change depending on their
environment. Contrary to other larger living organisms such as humans, bacteria are able to transform
and multiply at a more rapid pace, allowing these microorganisms to evolve and become resistant to
medications that are commonly used to treat them such as antibiotics. These altered bacteria are
oftentimes referred to as super bugs as they are unaffected by typical treatments involving the use of
antibiotics (NIH, n.d.). Two highly infectious examples of these bacteria are Methicillin Resistant

implemented a way to identify MRSA within their specific patient population before they are

Computer Network Topology Essay
NETWORK TOPOLOGIES
Computer network topology is an extension of basic topology. In this discipline we examine the
configuration of computer system elements and their interconnections of network lattice. Physical
network topology deals with the hardware components associated with the computer system including
workstations, servers, remote terminals and the cabling associated with them. Logical network
topology deals with representation of data flow between nodes which can be dynamically reconfigured
once the selected network equipment such as router is available.

Bus topology:

also called the network backbone. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the traffic intensity between the nodes is large then this topology is preferable. In this topology,
a certain proportion of nodes have multiple paths to another destination node. Each of the traditional
network topologies (Bus, Ring, Star and tree network topologies) had only single path from message
source to message destination. Since Mesh Network topology provides multiple paths from source to
destination so that greatly reduces the probability of single point network failure. The advantage of
mesh network over other networks is that source node determines the best suitable route from source
to destination based on factors such as connectivity, speed and pending node activities. Mesh topology
is not cost effective, this proves to be a major disadvantage for setting up the network. Another
disadvantage of this type of network is the need of a routing algorithm by each node for path
computation. When each node in the network is directly connected to every other node then it is called
a full mesh. This type of network topology works best with small number of nodes in the network.
When some nodes in the network are indirectly connected to other nodes in the network then it is
called partial mesh. Figure 1 provides an example of both partial and full mesh

Social Deviance And Social Deviance
Social deviance is considered a broad term, it tends to describe actions or behaviors that violate
society s norms. Norms, in a simple context, are rules by, which members of society are expected to
conform to. When it comes to discussing the term deviance, it tends to mean a person s failure to
conform to unspoken rules established by society. Social deviance can have many forms and
interpretations. Deviant acts are primarily relative to the setting because deviance in one place could
be considered non deviance in another place. Theft, violence, murder, or any kind of criminal
behavior, can be considered either deviant or non deviant, depending on the context. It s coming up to
countries, establishments, and governing bodies to determine, which acts are and aren t acceptable. An
example, could be murdering someone for drugs is not acceptable, but murdering someone in an act of
self defense is. It can be concluded, all acts of deviance are subjected to review and accepted on the
condition that it fits what society holds acceptable. Acts of deviance can result in some very positive
outcomes.(Why is this here?) Everyone has unconsciously committed an act of deviance, in addition,
have conformed to society s norms, as well. A un establish rule in society is to always pay for one s
food prior to consumption. However, I do not always conform to this social norm. For example, when
I go grocery shopping I tend to consume food that has not been purchased, yet, while walking

Tally In Uglies By Scott Westerfeld
Would you like to live in a world where you are born ugly and forced to transform pretty by age 16
and you have no say? Well the book Uglies by Scott Westerfeld is about a girl named Tally who meets
Shay, a teenager just like her, that decides not to turn pretty and escape to a city called The Smoke.
This gets Tally in trouble as she is threatened by a doctor in Special Circumstances, named Dr. Cable,
that she will stay ugly for life if she doesn t find and return her friend, along with other people that
escape too. I enjoyed this book very much because I felt that it kept me interested while reading
instead of boring me. Throughout the book the main characters showed a variety of different character
traits. Also some scenes demonstrate when the character is applying values either positive or negative.

Spinal Cord Injury Essay example
Running head: SPINAL CORD INJURY
Spinal Cord Injury
Shannon G. Johnston, RN, CEN
Liberty University
Abstract
There are many types of spinal cord injuries (SCI). Patients with SCI can symptoms that range from
mild neurologic impairment (such as numbness and tingling of extremities or neck pain) to
devastating total body paralysis depending on the extent of damage and where in the spinal cord the
damage occurs. Management of airway, breathing and circulation are key with SCI patients, as well as
immediate immobilization. With proper care and intervention, chances of survival are greatly
improved.
Spinal Cord Injury
Spinal cord injuries (SCIs) most commonly occur as a result of falls, motor vehicle accidents,
violence, sports ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These injuries can also be classified as complete or incomplete. A complete SCI indicates no motor
function below the site of injury while incomplete SCIs can have some remaining level of sensory
and/or motor function below the level of injury.
Most vertebral injuries occur along the most mobile areas of the spinal cord, including C1 C2, C4 C7,
and T10 L2 (Huether, 2010). All of these injuries have the potential to be devastating. Spinal shock
can occur, resulting in complete loss of function. This is a temporary occurrence and usually lasts up
to 3 months after injury. It involves paralysis, loss of reflex, loss of bladder/bowel control and sexual
dysfunction. It can also cause systemic changes, such as loss of temperature control, decrease in blood
pressure, and poor venous circulation. When function returns, it is usually demonstrated by return of
movement, reflexes, and bowel/bladder control (Heuther, 2008).
As function returns, an uncompensated cardiovascular response can occur called autonomic
hyperreflexia. This is a life threatening emergency and must be treated immediately. If left untreated,
the result is death. Autonomic hyperreflexia displays as a dramatic rise in blood pressure, pounding
headache, excessive diaphoresis (sweating), nausea and bradycardia. This is caused by stimulation of
the skin or pain

Self Perceived Prototypicality In Self-Verification Of...
The Role of Self Perceived Prototypicality in Self Verification of Group Members In many of previous
theories and research, the concept of prototypicality has been highly relevant in examining the nature
of group membership and inter and intra group behaviours (Kleef et al., 2007; Steinel et al., 2010;
Ellemers Jetten, 2013). Based on self categorisation theory, prototypicality is defined as the position
within the group according to the degree to which one represents the group s most typical
characteristics (Oakes, 1996; Gómez, Jetten Swann, 2014). An individual is considered to be a core
member when they possess most of the defining features of the group, and a peripheral group member
when they display only some of the features. Numerous

The Effects Of Cloud Based Music Streaming On Piracy And...
The effects of cloud based music streaming on piracy and music consumption.

With the advent of modern technology, the way our culture consumes music has changes dramatically
in the last ten years. With technology developing as rapidly as it is; music piracy has been prosperous
while traditional music sales have declined. This essay explores how cloud based music services have
affected music consumption and piracy.

Over the past decade, cloud streaming has made its way into consumer s lives. These cloud services
allow users to access music from a central database via a website. Users can access this music for free.
But only as long as they are connected to the internet. Consumers may also choose to purchase a
subscription to these sites which eliminates advertisements and allows unlimited listening online or
off. Cloud streaming services have made a large impact on the music industry. It has made such a
sizeable impact that Billboard has created a chart for streamed music.
Cloud streaming services provide access through subscriptions which are often paid. Meanwhile
piracy offers users free and unlimited access to all music without any limitations. Almost all
consumers of pirated music claim that the practice of piracy does not hurt the music industry at all.
The book Moser on Music Copyright (2006) argues that piracy does in fact hurt the music industry by
examining a study produces by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The RIAA

Analysis Of The Novel Asterios Polyp Color
Color is commonly used in various art forms as a way to represent feeling and symbolize a greater
meaning than a written text or black and white shading could. In David Mazzucchelli s graphic novel
Asterios Polyp color is used to express both emotion and time through his use of the printer primary
colors, cyan, magenta and yellow. Because of Mazzuccehlli s use of color and the abstract form of his
comic panels, his comic is considered an alternative comic. Breaking the barriers of what readers are
familiar with when it comes to the aesthetics of a comic, while at the same time being able to make it
not seem vastly unfamiliar. Asterios Polyp takes the reader to a whole other world as they are
navigated through the mind and memories of Asterios by narration from his dead twin brother. Similar
to Mazzuccehlli, Paul Thomas Anderson incorporates meaning through color in his film Punch Drunk
Love (2002). In this essay I will compare the use of color in both Asterios Polyp and Punch Drunk
Love with regards to its significance in both, and how form is used to express both emotion and time.
With regards to form, I will focus on the Mazzuccehlli s eccentric panel distribution and the variation
of space in between the panels, which separates it from most comics. Anderson s film alike separates
itself from the classic romantic movie form through both its plotline and cinematography. Had either
Mazzuccehlli or Anderson not incorporated the symbolism of color within their works, I feel

The Effect Of Mechanical Ventilation On The Medical Field
Greetings my fellow classmates, I am Calvin Tanoto and today I will be presenting on the mechanical
ventilator.
This presentation is about mechanical ventilation and it will include the function and the role of
mechanical ventilation in the medical field and also the history on the creation of the first mechanical
ventilator to the current ventilator that are being used. It will also give a detailed knowledge on how
the mechanical ventilator works and the social issue that has risen up which is Should mechanical
ventilation be continued to allow for progression to brain death so that organs can be donated? .
Lungs play a vital role in the respiratory system as it is where gas exchange from the atmosphere to
our body occurs. Oxygen is essential to our body to function and what the lungs do is that they supply
oxygen while discharging carbon dioxide before it gets to a dangerous quantity (Taylor ND).
When lungs are not capable of doing so, this condition is called respiratory failure. It is when there are
not sufficient oxygen into our blood through our lungs and also when our lungs fail to expel carbon
dioxide (NIH 2011). This can be caused by acute asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease,
overdosage of drugs that affect our respiratory system and other. When they are not treated, it can be
fatal (TheMerckManual ND) as our organs requires oxygen to function properly and if the amount of
carbon dioxide is too much, it can be harmful to our organs, and to prevent this

Mr. Kapasi s Interpreter Of Maladies
In Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri, Mr. Kapasi tries to interpret other people s difficult
marriages although by passing his own. He interprets the marriage of the Das family and reveals their
problems, but the problems of his own marriage he leaves hidden. He is trying to take away the agony
of his own marriage through the enjoyment of fantasizing about Mrs. Das. When Mrs. Kapasi doesn t
recuperate from her lost son, Mr. Kapasi tries to help her but she doesn t use the attention. Mr. Kapasi
feels bad, but looks towards Mrs. Das to help his pain.
The interpretation of the Das s marriage shows how Mr. Kapasi reveals the bad relationship. Mr.
Kapasi pinpoints the bad objects in the Das s relationship but nullifies his own problems with his wife.

Kapasi lacks affection towards Mr. Kapasi. She never asked him about the patients who came to the
doctor s office, or said that his job was a big responsibility (53). In contrast, Mr. Kapasi shows Mrs.

eventually had. And the countless other ways he tried to console his wife and keep her from crying in
her sleep (53). In this passage, Mr. Kapasi feels that he is deserving of affection but his wife is not
giving him what he deserves. This leads Mr. Kapasi to thinking that Mrs. Das s affection is special to
him and he enjoys it. And when Mr. Kapasi sees the affection Mrs. Das shows towards him, he is
moved by it. When Mr. Kapasi thought once again about how she had said romantic , the feeling of

By fantasizing about Mrs. Das, Mr. Kapasi tries to disregard the problems he has with his own wife.

A Career Of A Pilot
A Career in The Clouds Since the beginning of time, flight is something that humans have tried to
master. Now that we have it figured out, it is considered a luxury. If you are a pilot, you will get to
experience this beautiful luxury regularly. As many people are, I have always been fascinated with the
idea of flying. Even when I was young I entertained the idea of becoming a pilot. I believe this is a job
that will challenge me and help me grow as a person. This paper will explore the job description,
requirements, and salary expectation for a pilot. First, a pilot s job description is very extensive.

Depending on your specific job as a pilot, the pay is extremely good, which is always a plus to me. I
think the job in general and the work environment sound like they would fit me very well. I feel as
though I would work best and be most comfortable in a job where I work closely with only a few
people. I now know the extent of difficulty this job comes with, but luckily the most difficult aspect is
the schooling and not the job itself. In summary, there are many elements in the job description of a
pilot. Second, it is important to consider the educational and personal qualifications of being a pilot.
To begin, the Occupational Handbook describes what education requirements you need. To be a
commercial pilot you will need a high school diploma or the equivalent before you can even begin
training; in order to fly for an airline, you will need a bachelor s degree. As for pilot specific training
you will need six certificates: a Student Pilot Certificate, Private Pilot License, Instrument Rating,
Commercial Pilot License, Multi Engine Rating, and an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate. Education
received through the military is also highly valued, but not necessary (OCO). Next, there are a few
available places to receive pilot training in Kansas. Spartan College notes that they have a 33 month

Essay Analysis of Cousin Kate by Christina Rossetti
Analysis of Cousin Kate by Christina Rossetti
Cousin Kate by Christina Rossetti describes a cottage maiden who was seduced and used by the lord
of the estate for which she worked. She was surprised and taken a back by the fact that someone so
great and powerful could be slightly interested in her, and so she automatically fell in love with him. It
wasn t until after he had slept with her that he left her for her cousin, Kate. The cottage maiden was
devastated that he had done that to her. She felt unclean and unwanted. The lord asked for Kate s hand
in marriage and she accepted.
The cottage maid thought that he married Kate because she was innocent and pure, Because you were

Men would then look down on you in disgust, as would friends and family. The poem demonstrates
how a man can love a woman, then throw her away and move onto another as he pleases, and because
he was a Lord the cottage maiden could not say a thing. This brings into light the difference between
higher and lower class people. If the cottage maiden had said anything, people would not believe her
and turn a blind eye to her and to her accusations. According to the maiden, Kate s love was not real.
O cousin Kate my love was true, your love was writ in sand .
This tells us that Kate s love was going to disappear and was only a temporary emotion which was
later just blown away like writing in the sand, whilst the maiden s love was real. The maiden may just
be saying this for revenge against Cousin Kate to try and make herself feel better but we do not know.
The Lord s love towards the maiden was not real, His plaything and his love . Plaything and love are
two very different contrasts with each other. Did he really love her for a while or was it all just a game
to him? He used her and made her believe that he liked her then left her for Kate.
The maiden was infatuated by the Lord and fell in love with him instantly. He used this, his power and
his wealth against the maiden.
The Lord casts off the female once he meets Kate, who is fairer than the narrator. This shows that
males do not always get emotionally involved in

Port Chicago Mutiny Essay
This paper will focus on the evaluation of the historic investigative report done by the History
Channel, The Port Chicago Mutiny. Following two intense explosions on July 17, 1944, that killed
321 people in San Francisco at Port Chicago. From the movie, it can be surmised that the investigation
is about how the United States Navy knowingly placed black sailors in danger, causing their deaths
and refusing, then and now, to exonerate survivors of the tragic explosions. To begin with, the
documentary started to explain the racial history of the United States and the Navy. Because of Jim
Crow Law s, there was a clear racial divide in the nation, and the military had only then begun to
allow people of color to join. Black people that joined the Navy were not allowed to serve in combat.
Instead, they were put to pack dangerous ammunition on ships at Port Chicago. The ammunition was

Analysis Of Borderlands By Gloria Anzaldua
Speaking of Texas U.S. Southwest/Mexican border, the first thing appears in many people s mind is a
horizontal line with US on the upper side and Mexico on the lower, as depicted in maps. However, in
reality, a border serves more than just to separate states. In many occasions, it witnesses and bridges
social networks that stretch across border. These two functions seem to contradict each other but in
fact they exactly reflect the complex nature of borders, or, more realistically, borderlands, a term
coined to uproot in people the misleading image of a line. In her book Borderlands, the author Gloria
Anzaldua, as a descendent of Indians and Mexicans living close to the America Mexico border in
Southern Texas, defies such dualistic and simplistic thinking about the border/double sided or multi
sided dilemma, suggesting a new mestiza consciousness , a tolerance of ambiguity and a way of
creating new personal culture from her accounting with all three cultures, as opposed to adopting only
one of them without independent thinking and confronting against the rest. This new way of thinking
stems from the reality of borderlands but instead of stopping there the author expands its application
to establishing both cultural and sexual identities.
For Anzaldua, any borderland is a place of contradictions (preface 19), rendering border residents to
suffer from constant insecurity and perplexity as they struggle to keep their multiple identities intact.
Nonetheless, as she writes

This was an interesting book and I also took the time to watch the movie as well which helped

Willie is only there to grabbed the piano, Lymon has other plans to stay in Pittsburgh. While in the

Lab Report On Microbial Unknowns Essay
Microbial Unknowns Objective: In the past couple of weeks, our class received a single broth that
contained two species of bacterium. One bacterium was gram positive and one bacterium was gram
negative. We were required to use our techniques and knowledge we learned in class to separate and
identify the two species we were given in our broths. Methodology: Day One: On the first day of our
Biochemical Unknown Lab we were given a tube that contained broth media which held two different
types of bacterium. Once we were given our broths, we had to streak two Nutrient Agar plates with the
mixed culture tube by using a loop. After I streaked my Nutrient Agar plates, I decided to perform a
gram stain. First I flamed the loop and set it aside to cool. After I flamed the loop I prepared two slides
with a drop of water in the middle. Once the loop was cool I dipped the loop into the broth and
smeared the loop onto both slides mixing the unknown bacterium with the water. I flamed my loop, set
it aside, heat fixed both slides, and let the slides air dry. Once the slide were dry I set them on two rods
above the drainage area and covered the smears with Crystal Violet. I let the Crystal Violet sit on the
smear for one minute and rinsed off the Crystal Violet. Once the Crystal Violet was rinsed I applied
Grams Iodine and let that sit for one minute. After one minute passed I rinsed the slide again and
moved on to applying the alcohol. I dripped the alcohol onto the slide until the

Sor Juana Ines De La American Colonialism Analysis
The theme of colonialism has been one that I have found to be particularly interesting. Looking at this
theme with a contemporary lens, I think has caused me to lose sight of what its real intentions were. I
believe that this theme was meant to show the people that the taking of these new lands does not
comes easy, particularly when there are people already living there. One thing colonialism always
does, is make sure that of it the conquerors are always glorified, while the conquered are mainly
silenced. Colonialism s main goal is the justification of either the enslavement or genocide of the
native peoples, claiming to be saving these natives. As is stated in an online textbook by OpenStax
The exploits of the most famous Spanish explorers have provided Western civilization with a narrative
of European supremacy and Indian savagery. we see that the reason for colonialism is to gain power
by any means necessary. This is where colonialism does not work for me, it is simply an excuse for
their destruction of a culture. After reading the works of two great spanish playwrights, Sor Juana Ines
de la Cruz and Pedro Calderon de la Barca, in which they use this theme to drive their plot. These two
texts explore colonialism in two very different ways. Loa to the Divine Narcissus by Sor Juana de la

The Implications Of The Rebound Effect On Resource Efficiency
Summary The implications of the Rebound Effect on resource efficiency strategies implies that, if
rebounds associated with energy savings are significant, then efficiency measures will have far less
effect in reducing the rate of resource production, consumption and the increasing environmental
impacts. The ongoing debate on rebound between experts in industry, focuses on how much of an
impact The Rebound Effect has on efficiency schemes and policies. Analysts such as; Harry Saunders
(Breakthrough Institute (BI)), Steve Sorrell (UK Energy Research Center (UKERC)), and Robert
Michaels (Institute for Energy Research (IER), claim that the effects of rebound are grossly
underestimated and overlooked as result of imprecise quantifying models needed to influence policy
changes for more effective green solutions. Others such as; James Barrett (Clean Economy
Development Center), Amory Lovins (Rocky Mountain Institute)and Kenneth Gillingham (Yale
University), assert that the impact of the rebound on efficiency is not as grand and substantial as it is
made out to be. While the debate goes on, the key point is that rebound does occur, and the sooner
better measures and policies are outlined to counter its effects, the better for further and future
efficiency strategies. Introduction The European Commission has termed Resources to include all

Fairies In A Midsummer Night s Dream
Alas, love can be a great source of confusion and sorrow, but it is nevertheless probably the most
powerful feeling a human being can experience. In Shakespeare s A Midsummer Night s Dream,
Lysander says that the course of true love never did run smooth (Shakespeare 1.1.134), which is seen
in the quarrels between the couples throughout the play. Shakespeare makes use chiefly of the fairies
supernatural powers to settle the love conflicts and portrays the irrationality in love of the characters,
thereby creating numerous comic situations and leading to the unification of the couples towards the
end of the play. First, one of Shakespeare s techniques to bring about the comedic climax is the use of
fairies whose supernatural powers create ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Consequently, Demetrius falls in love with Helena, as it should have been in the first place, so two
[men] at once woo one [woman], as Puck says in line 3.2.118. Helena is completely mixed up when
Demetrius states that he is now in love with her because then both of Hermia s suitors are now wooing
her. The conflicts in love that Shakespeare presents here are a way for him to start solving the love
issues by bringing the couples together using the fairies magic powers. Indeed, by making Demetrius
fall in love with the lady who loves him, he pleases Helena, who should normally be happy to have
won her quest. However, since Lysander is also in love with her, she is not fooled, and knows that
there is something unusual going on. She suspects that the gentlemen are teasing her scornfully by
flout[ing] at [her] insufficiency (2.2.128). More confusion arises when Hermia arrives, and Helena
says in line 3.2.192 that she is one of this confederacy of people who make fun of her. Then, Hermia
comes to think that it is actually Helena who is playing a trick on her: I scorn you not. It seems that
you scorn me (3.2.221). This mixup and inability to understand other people s intentions are
Shakespeare s ways of demonstrating how hard it is to understand the behaviour of love struck people.

The Woman Of A Tradesman Essay
recently discovered love won t meddle with her freedom and independence: Mr. Knightley as of now
has a fortune of his own and even consents to move into Hartfield after their marriage. In spite of the
fact that Emma is unmistakably a flight from the usual and ordinary Austen s depiction of women, the
other female characters in the novel bring to light the challenges confronting ladies without monetary
autonomy. Miss Bates, Jane Fairfax, and Harriet Smith represent three conceivable situations for the
women who do not have high social status and position like Emma. Miss Bates never wedded and is
reliant on her mother s insignificant wage. With the passage of time, her neediness builds, as does the
measure of disparagement that she must persevere from those around her. Similarly, Harriet is poor
and subject to those around her. The girl of a tradesman, she has few prospects until Robert Martin,
and, on account of Emma s impact, is constantly in risk of extending past her social capacities. Jane
Fairfax is considered as a foil to Emma, and, from various perspectives, appears to be more proper as
an Austen s female character. She has the majority of Emma s beauty, magnificence, and insights,
however fails to offer the pay of a refined and well off man, a reality that appears to fate her to a life
as a tutor. It is through the character of Emma and her monetarily independence, Austen attacks the

Do the Right Thing is a 1989 film by Spike Lee. According to Entertainment Weekly, it is one of the
25 most controversial films ever. It was deemed culturally significant by the Library of Congress in
1999, and then placed in the National Film Registry. The story follows the lives of citizens of the
Bedford Stuyvesant District in New York City, on the hottest day of the summer, and what they do to
cope with the heat. To summarize the entire plot it ends in a riot. I d like to analyze some of the
situations found in the movie, and discuss how, if at all, it related to race relations in America. When
watching the film, I wasn t overly interested in the plot. Nothing interesting happened (until the end of
the movie) and there was nothing that made me (as a viewer) intrigued to continue watching. What I
found important, however, was the character portrayals in the movie, and this is what kept me
watching. I m not sure what Lee wanted from this movie, because to me, it seemed as if he was being
a) overtly racist towards non African Americans, and b) stereotypical of his own race. Throughout the
movie I was astounded by the portrayal of the black characters in this movie. Specifically, Buggin Out
s character. While I realize that the character s name is a direct reference to his personality, I think Lee
went a bit too far. For example, when the white cyclist accidentally scuffed his

Katy Perry Firework
The song by Katy Perry entitled Firework is a very beautiful song that has a very powerful meaning.
This song talks about revealing one s real self to the world instead of keeping it a secret. It tells us not
to be afraid of what we have and who we really are but to be proud of it. The song is about being
proud of ourselves without feeling embarrass or scared. The song begins with the speaker asking a few
questions. The list of questions is basically to ask the listeners about their feelings. There is some time
that we feel down, hopeless, and useless because we think that we are not good compared to others. In
the next stanza, the speaker is trying to say that each of us has strength and speciality inside of us
which we should not be afraid ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Firstly, the speaker uses simile to compare a person s feeling with plastic bags. The plastic bags imply
as useless and weak. The imagery of a plastic bag that is drifting through the wind conveys a sense of
helplessness and having no control over one s direction as the plastic bag will easily change it
direction depend on wind blow. Just below this part, the speaker illustrates using a house of cards as a
simile. It shows how strong a person to withstand the surrounding pressure and the demands other
people have on us. The repeated idea of wind blowing in this and the previous line alludes to the idea
that the wind is a metaphor for the external pressure we face. In both comparison, we are being
compared to plastic bags and a house of cards, putting us in a vulnerable state that can be easily
destroyed by external pressure. The next part, the speaker use metaphor to compare the listeners to the
fireworks. The fireworks are bright, vivid, explosive, and powerful. This comparison encourages the
listeners to be themselves, and show the world about their ability. Another element that is used by the
speaker is onomatopoeia. The boom boom boom is just like how the sound is made only when the
fireworks have been released into the dark sky. It implies us to create out our own path and make our
success spectacular, and to stand boldly as the sound; loud and

Outcome Based Education is a basic distinct from conventional education and involved the full

the educational models that had come before. With OBE, students focus on what is to be learned, by

The premises are: 1. All students can learn and succeed but not on the same day and not in the same
way; In OBE, the idea that all students can learn is interpreted in two ways, one follows the claim of
the early behaviourists such as John Watson that anyone can be taught anything, given good teaching
and sufficient time, and focuses not on standards of achievement, but increments of progress. It means
that each student has the same time and opportunity in getting learning and achieve their success, even

The Popularity Of Fast Casual Dining
A question that is asked every day is what do we want to eat? This question has many different
answers; but some answers everyone would agree with is something fast, cheap, and good quality.
This is the market that fast casual has been dominating over the years, and a market that seems to be
on the rise for the foreseeable future. Whether it is a concept created by an unknown player in the
industry, or a Michelin Star chef, the fast casual concept s rising popularity is still at the beginning of
its revolution. History shows that the concept of fast casual dining is not new. According to Erin
DeJesus of Eater.com The expansion happy Wolfgang Puck launched his chain Wolfgang Puck

The largest fast casual chain in the world is Panera Bread, with Chipotle trailing at a close second
place. These two brands have not only represented this growing industry, but inspired many other
concepts trying to replicate the success that they have achieved. The prosperity achieved by Panera
and Chipotle have encouraged many world famous chefs to try and create their own concepts. In her
article, DeJesus talks about how two Michelin starred chef Joshua Skenes is partnering with Adam
Flieschman of Unami Burger to introduce a fast casual Chinese noodle concept called Fat Noodle.
Here guests will be able to dine on the recipes of Joshua Skenes for $6 10 per meal. So now we have
high quality chefs who want to dive into this industry by creating a fast fine casual restaurant. These
restaurants can be characterized by their quality of food, speed of service, as well as their price point.
According to Ethan Stowell, the chef s approach to product and the guest s experience is where the
fine dining sensibility can make the biggest impact on a fast casual restaurant. I don t think they are
much different than running higher end places, he says of the fast casual market. The goals are still the
same. The goals are have somebody come in to have a good time, try to offer them good value for
what they get.

Descriptive Essay On The Desert
The hot, arid air burned into my soul as I faced the barren desert surrounding me. My family and I
were on a long awaited vacation to the Grand Canyon, yet we had to drive over 15 hours I radiated
impatience throughout the journey. Walls of heat shrouded me as I gasped for air my efforts were
fruitless, however, swallowing nothing but fire. As the fire in my lungs grew, I looked out the window
and into the looming suns heart. Suddenly, my eyes collapsed and tears engulfed them till they took
their true form; a forest blanketed with soft, gleaming snow. However, I was evoked from my reverie
by a vehement cry and I was staring into the eyes of tattered vultures, of every discrepancy, who
recited a prophecy only I could hear. Who dares enter our land! they screeched in a dissonant manner.
Trembling, I gazed at the sun and was standing amidst a perpetual desert the vultures eyes glued to
me. I froze with fear, though the sun baked my skin. A meal for today, the vultures rasped
flamboyantly, cooked to a crisp! Uh, I sighed, I couldn t wait 10 minutes to save me from you
repulsive demons! I woke up like a corpse rises from the grave, my red eyes flooded with tears. The
cool air lulled my throat; dissipating the faint memory of a raging fire and loathsome vultures
scavenging my flesh. As the tears coated my face, I sat up until a symphony of cracks sang from my
spine. Despite the agonizing pain, I turned around and the world revealed itself as a contemporary

Almost 80% of our population lives in rural areas. So their economic empowerment is a must for real

A Christmas Memory Truman Capote
In the story, A Christmas Memory by Truman Capote, Buddy is the main character in the story that
doesn t have a real family that looks after him, except for his older cousin, who is the only person who
has ever offered to foster him and who would give up everything just for him. Buddy and his older
cousin have such a strong bond because they have been one another s family for a long time, they
have become best friends since they have done everything together while their other relatives have left
them to fend for themselves; true friends are the ones who would do anything to make you happy
when you re at your worst, this is exactly what buddy s cousin was for him and what he was for her.
To start off, Buddy doesn t have a family to fall back on except for his cousin, he makes sure that his
cousin is always well taken care of and is always happy. Buddy will do absolutely anything for his
cousin, just as she would do for him. Buddy went to pick out a tree far from where they had gone
before because it made his cousin happy, Queenie wades the stream first, paddles across barking
complaints about the swiftness of the current. (69) Buddy would never go against his cousins wishes
knowing that it would disappoint her, Buddy goes to get the tree with his cousin even though he
knows that is it dangerous. Buddy knows that the tree is something that she wanted and it meant
something big to her, she is the only person Buddy has ever really had to care about, he wants the best
for her no matter what it is that he has to do.
Additionally, Buddy and his cousin maintain a successful life by working together and coming up with
creative ways to earn money, they never grew up having enough money, so they had to make up for it
by earning it themselves. Last summer others in the house contracted to pay us to a penny for every
twenty five flies we killed. Oh, the carnage of August: the flies that flew to heaven! (66) They worked
well together that summer in order to get the money from their relatives, they most likely figured that
if their relatives were going to give them anything, let it might as well be money. Buddy and his
cousin may not have liked each other, but they sure did work well together when they were given

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Summary
Summary
For this article there were no research questions, but the authors wanted to focus on the pathogenesis,
diagnosis and treatment of PCOS. They found that polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is common in
women, with a10% prevalence in women of reproductive age. Polycystic ovary syndrome is defined
as ovarian dysfunction with polycystic ovaries. It also includes androgen excess which is shown by
testosterone levels being elevated. Increased levels of testosterone can be seen through excess body
hair. Obesity is seen in many women with PCOS, this can lead to insulin resistance and Type II
Diabetes. Genetics has an impact on polycystic ovary syndrome with 20 40% of people with PCOS
having first degree relatives with the syndrome.
The authors also found that PCOS can cause many long term side effects, including Type II diabetes,
cardiovascular disease, mood disorders, and malignancy. Type II diabetes is due to the high prevalence
of obesity leading to insulin resistance in PCOS. Women with PCOS are at higher risks for
cardiovascular diseases including increased levels of low density lipoproteins. Polycystic ovary
syndrome can also lead to anxiety, depression and binge eating. Women with obesity have a ... Show

Domestic Violence Is A Major Issue Throughout Today s...
Domestic violence is a major issue throughout today s society, and the domestic violence spotlight
usually shines in the direction of professional sports. The less than glamorous limelight usually shines
upon major sports leagues including the NBA, NHL, (DeGette). NFL, and NASCAR. (Taylor). From
all of the recent controversy, one thing is clear; domestic violence cases should be left to U.S.
Congress due to the sports leagues rule violations against the offenses. The Commissioners of all of
the sports teams, a.k.a. the police of the leagues, often do not take a stance against domestic violence
issues or charges, unless these felons are put into the public eye, causing the league to lose appeal.
Domestic violence happens for various ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(DeGette). Ray Rice is currently in the spotlight for the NFL after beating his then wife, and now
fiancé, although he definitely is not the only one. (Taylor). NASCAR star Kurt Bush has also been
accused of abusing his girlfriend during the peak of his career. (Taylor).
People blame domestic violence occurring through sports for various reasons, but there is truly no
reason for domestic violence. In contact sports, players are trained to use violence and intimidation,
and after they have been trained to enforce that for so long, there is no on/off switch to stop said
aggression. ( Out ). Athletes are supposed to be a symbol of manliness, and domestic violence can
create such forms of masculine unity. ( Out ). This sense of unity can spawn from the common locker
room talks about physical and sexual aggression towards women as an attempt to fit in with the peers
on their team. (Cord). Wins and losses also play a huge role in the occurrence of domestic violence. If
a team experiences an at home upset, then the chance of domestic violence occurring increases by ten
percent. (Cord). Sadly, this outrageous statistic doesn t affect the athletes alone, but their dedicated
fans. (Cord).
Athletes are more prone to domestic violence than the Average Joe due to some of the factors
previously stated. ( Out ). Some people believe that the media portrays this felony to be worse in
sports leagues than it genuinely is, but let the

Civil War Dbq
The civil war was an ugly fight between the North, which was called the Union, they were against
slavery, and the South who were called the Confederacy, they were for slavery. During the civil war
both the south and north needed African American to serve in many things such as, helping build
fortifications, to put artillery in place and meet other military needs. This connects to my learning by
saying that the military needed help building forts and putting things together. The Northern and
Southern armies had very different views of African Americans military service in the Civil War. One
way that we know this is by looking at two recruitment posters. A confederate recruitment poster from
1862 shows that the south viewed blacks as laborors.

Integrating Quotes Into Paper
Tips on Introducing Quotes General Principles Writers use quotations for a variety of purposes: to
argue with another author s definition of a term, to provide statistical evidence or testimony to validate
a claim; to present the reader with a statement we wish to refute or discuss in detail. If writers overdo
and include too many quotations in a research essay, readers will form the negative impression that the
authors of those sources are more authoritative than the writer of the research paper. Often the voices
of those authorities drown out the writer s voice, in a sense taking over authorship of the paper.
Writers should use direct quotations only when the source s words are particularly relevant, powerful,
and/or an extremely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Lysander s Masculinity In The Disappointment
The 17th century provides a treasure trove of literary greatness. The authors cultivated such a tight
circle so that everyone s work kept in dialogue. Aphra Behn uses her poem, The Disappointment, as
an opportunity to respond to common tropes found in male authored writing. In lines 111 140, Behn
dismantles Lysander s masculinity in The Disappointment through comparisons to figures from Greek
mythology, thus creating situational irony around his character s ego. In stripping Lysander of all his
awful fires (ll. 113) in this selection, Behn reveals Lysander s true feelings of impotence and, by
extension, women.
Behn immediately ties Lysander to a warrior, a traditionally masculine figure, with his name. Lysander
refers to the Spartan admiral in Greek mythology. Lysander s name undermines his masculinity
because the fierce and aggressive reputation of the Spartan culture does not align with Lysander s
sexual performance. Behn uses this identification to make him seem like he is an ideal romantic
partner, but she describes him as [the] god of her desires,/ Disarmed of all his awful fires/ And cold as
flowers bathed in the morning dew. (ll. 112 114) Behn refers to Lysander as a god and foreshadows the
connections to other Greek figures later on in the selection. The fires Behn mentions represent
Lysander s sexual passion. He is disarmed of them and bathes in the morning dew, which is a
euphemism for his premature ejaculation. He is fiery, passionate beforehand, and ashamed of himself
after. Impotence is a negative quality and does not fit the typical image of masculinity. Behn uses his
impotence and Cloris s beauty to make allusions to mythological figures to provide further insight into
their characters.
After he proves to be impotent, Cloris runs away. Behn explains, Like lightning through the grove she
hies,/ Or Daphne from the Delphic god. (ll. 121 122) Behn hyperbolizes Cloris s speed by comparing
it to lightning emphasizes the chimerical tone in these final stanzas. The Delphic god, Apollo,
aggressively pursued a nymph, Daphne, in Greek mythology. Apollo is the god of many things, but
one of them being plagues. The nymph is a mythological spirit of nature imagined as a beautiful
maiden.

Case Study Partisan Elections
1) The vast majority of the Texas judiciary is chosen through partisan elections. Is this a good way to
select judges?
I personally agree with the PBS Frontline episode in that partisan elections can promote corruption in
the political world. Thus, I do not believe that partisan elections is a good way of selecting judges.
Due to its structure, judges are elected by the people based on their likeability/appeal and political
party affiliation, aspects I do not think should be the primary reasons to vote in a judge. Rather, the
judge should be judged and elected based on their character and accountability as a political
figurehead. Citizens want a reliable, impartial, and sustaining judge who is able to make the right
decision based on the laws and current facts provided. How can a judge be impartial when working a
case if a lawyer present donated a large sum to his campaign during election? I, along with the public,
do not think the judge could be impartial as evident by the poll taken and found that 83% of the public
believe judges are influenced by outside campaign contributions (PBS Frontline). This is the same
concept found in the baseball reference of allowing an umpire, who has been paid by baseball players,
to impartially referee a game (PBS Frontline). In both situations, I do not believe the judges would be
able to fairly and neutrally preside over the case, making the system potentially corrupt over time and
not a preferred method of selecting judges. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

  • 2. Genetically Modified Organisms And Its Effect On The Consumer For soy and sugar beet [crops], in 2013 genetically modified varieties represented over 90% of the total [of American soybean and sugarbeet crops]; for maize and cotton it was exactly 90%. Genetically modified organisms, or commonly abbreviated GMOs, are plants that have had their DNA genetically altered to create amicable, or abolish undesirable traits. As previously said in the statistic sourced from gmo compass.org, GMOs are dominant to their counter product, organic foods. On the topic, many effects are produced from GMOs, not only health effects upon the consumer, but economic effects, and inflated population rates. Elaborating upon the the economic, as well as population effect, GMOs are modified to have a higher production rate per plant, making them cheaper to produce, and inevitably cheaper in market stocks. Populations tend to increase dramatically from a higher food supply accommodating the demands for a constant flow of food, and expansion of that flow. Alternatively, many concerns come from the beneficiary health and risks that accompany manipulated organisms. Two key consternations derive from allergies developed from GMOs, and linkage to disease in humans. Other external arguments concur with the controversy of adjusted genes. Examples of this is questioning the morality of permuting natural substances for the selfishness of mankind, as well as the destruction of biodiversity. Theoretically, with support from a variety of different sources, genetically ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Ocean Conveyor Belt Overview/Description Demonstrates how water has different densities at different temperatures and salinity levels, then ties this in to the Ocean Conveyor Belt, a deep ocean circulation driven by temperature and salinity that carries water around the world. Background Thermohaline circulation or the Ocean Conveyor Belt is responsible for the large scale ocean circulation. It is driven by global density differences caused by surface heat, and variations in salinity. As the water moves throughout the globe with total transit times of up to 1000+ years, the water masses transport heat energy, and matter (dissolved substances, gases, and nutrients) around the globe. The density of ocean water is not the same throughout the global oceans, but varies significantly and discretely. Warm seawater expands and is therefore less dense than cooler seawater. Moreover, saltier water is denser than fresher water because of the dissolved salt that fills the space between water molecules, resulting in greater ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In these regions, winds support evaporative cooling of the ocean water, which makes it denser due to thermal processes, but also by removing water molecules resulting in a higher salinity. Formation of sea ice also increases salinity as fresh/pure water is preferentially frozen first, expelling saltier brine. These cold, saltier masses of water sink relatively rapidly over a small area. These waters of the North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) sinks and flows southward along the continental slope of North and South America toward Antarctica and flows eastward around the Antarctic mixing with Antarctic waters. The water circulation then flows northward at dept into the three ocean basins. During this northward flow, they slowly begin to warm and mix with overlying waters and as a result, rise toward the surface at a rate of about 1 centimeter per day over most of the ... • 4. Ordinary People Pay Disparity University of the People Introduction Over half a century ago, the pay disparity between the regular employee and a multimillion dollar corporation s chief executive officer, according to Mackey (20140), was at such a low ebb compare to this modern day and time. Life, then, was simple. Expenditure was at a bare minimum. Most necessities, especially food, were readily available. People spent less and saved more. The pay gap, to say the least, was appreciable. Nearly six decades ago, the salary gap kept widening. Those who own the means of production aren t saying anything. The employees continue to live on starvation wage struggling to make ends meet. What is wrong with us? The world is getting very unequal. Ordinary people have demonstrated, conducted sit in, and petitioned governments and international organizations to fix the issue of inequality in all areas of life. So far, they ve made no headway. Protests like Occupy Wall Street, Occupy Toronto, lack Lives Matter, the perennial G 20s and its offshoots have so far fallen on deaf ears. These protests called on business and political leaders to do something about the gap between the haves and the haves not. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The disparity is hurting the ordinary citizens. It s affecting them emotionally, psychologically and physically. If the current pay structure remains in place, it tends to demotivate workers, and production and its quality will be affected. The current policies must change. Corporations should begin to chart new plans to reduce the compensation gaps between their CEOs and the ordinary workers. The world is changing every day for the better. Wages of employees are lower than in 10 years ago (Mishel, L., Bivens, J., Gould, E., Shiertholz, H. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Incredible Hulk Research Paper With my eyes wide shut, the following three scientists come to mind: First, Aristotle (384BC 322BC) Great early Greek scientist who made many researches in the natural sciences including botany, zoology, physics, astronomy, chemistry, and meteorology, and geometry.Second, Albert Einstein was a German born physicist who developed the general theory of relativity, Won Nobel Prize in Physics (1921) for his discovery of the Photoelectric effect, which formed basis of Quantum Theory. He is considered the most influential physicist of the 20th century. Tudor (1989) notes that between 1951 and 1964 scientists were often portrayed in film as being responsible for saving as well as endangering humanity. In films of that era science is dangerous, but science also provides the most appropriate means of dealing with the dangers that science unleashes. Scientists might, for example, inadvertently create mutant monsters, but scientists also most commonly figure out how to eliminate the threats they have created. In these films, science is dangerous but efficacious. In contrast, more recent entertainment films portray scientists as being unable to solve problems or eliminate threats to humanity. Instead, laypersons most commonly save the day (Tudor 1989). Scientific expertise is devalued in these films, and may even be portrayed as a handicap of sorts. In horror films like C.H.U.D. and the 1988 remake of The Blob, laypersons rid the world of dangerous creatures, but only after the laypersons outwit scientists who either fail to understand the dangers or who have a vested interest in perpetuating the dangers. In films like E.T. and Splash, laypersons save the lives of kind and intelligent creatures by rescuing them from scientific captivity. In these and many other recent films, science no longer provides resources for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Memory Loss Research Paper I wasn t able to look at the positive aspects of a relationship with someone who passed until I was able to start to really grieve their death and the loss of the future with them before I was able to truly look at the positive aspects of our relationship and the memories of. It was too painful to look at until I started to grieve. The book also mentioned that some children may want to make something in memory of the loss of the individual. It could be in the form of a collage, memory box, a memory book, a drawing, a poem, a short movie, a song, a play, a painting, whatever the child feels like making is good. Some children may even ask others to get involved in the project. Something that stood out for me in the book as well was that children are encouraged to hold a memorial service. This is where the child can include their loved ones if desired to share what they would like to share, their stories, their feelings, whatever they want to share. When my niece had passed, it was suggested by the grief counselor that my nephew do this and he did. He did this at the cemetery about one month, after she was buried (when he was ready). • 7. Persuasive Essay On Global Citizenship In today s world, it is very important for every person to demonstrate exceptional citizenship as it proves beneficial to the development of the world. In the video documentary, The Cove, Ric O Barry and his team of activists are protesting the dolphin slaughter occurring in Taiji, Japan. Their goal is to reduce the number of dolphins killed each year and hopefully stop the slaughter entirely. Mr. Barry and his team, are model global citizens as they abide by the law, are extremely informed about the cause they are protesting, and display purposeful and active citizens greatly through their work. Therefore, Ric O Barry and his team of activists are remarkable examples of global citizens based off of the four characteristics describing a good global citizen. Ric O Barry and his team demonstrate excellent global citizenship through their care and concern for the endangered dolphins in Japan, even if they do not necessarily abide the law. Firstly, the only situations in which Mr. Barry and/or the activists feel the need to break the law is when they are trying to help the dolphins, and the law is unfortunately restricting them. In the video documentary, The Cove, Ric O Barry is arrested multiple times for trying to free captive dolphins in Florida and on the Island of Bimini. He shows good civic behavior here because he genuinely cares for animals and the well being of the environment, thus providing credible reasoning for breaking the cruel laws that allow companies to keep animals in captivity. Furthermore, Ric O Barry and his team of activists are law abiding citizens because they ensure that they do not hurt anyone in the process of protesting and they continuously cooperate with the police and other government officials. For example, when Mandy Rae Cruickshank and Kirk Krack visit the cove for the first time, they try to keep the encounter with the Japanese fisherman peaceful even though the fishermen are butting chests with them. Another example would be the numerous times Taiji officials interrogate Mr. Barry about the actions he takes against the reoccurring dolphin slaughter, and how he always complies with them, respectfully answering all their questions. This proves that Ric and his team are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Professional Sports League Baseball Ryan Mahn Professor Matheson Economics of Sports October 27, 2014 Moneyball Compared to most other professional sports leagues in the United States, there is a lot of financial disparity between small market and large market teams in Major League Baseball. Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game is a novel about how an unlikely general manager, Billy Beane, used unconventional statistical analysis to enable the Oakland Athletics to outplay much wealthier teams in the league. The problem faced by Beane and the Athletics was competing against large market teams that were able to afford the services of the best players in the league. Through the use of sabermetrics, Beane and his staff found a solution to overcome their limited budget ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Baseball is a true team sport . Sabermetrics, the statistical method applied by Bean and his acquaintance Paul DePodesta deviated from these overused and overvalued measures, and focused on team players, not volatile superstars (Moneyball). Sabermetrics revolved around the analysis of undervalued statistics primarily on base percentage, the number of times a player swings at the first pitch, and the average number of pitches per at bat a player sees (Moneyball). With this tactic, Billy Beane and the Oakland Athletics were able to win many more games than they would have if they were constrained by overvalued players. Beane was able to use this ingenious method of statistical analysis to discern the unique talents of undervalued players that did not meet the statistical criteria of big market teams. With a very specifically assembled team, whereby some players were even forced to switch positions, the Oakland Athletics had seemed to overcome the odds. A prime example of the potential success of sabermetrics was seen in a player named Scott Hatteberg. Hatteberg spent most of his career lingering around the Boston Red Sox organization as a catcher both in the minor leagues and in the major leagues (Moneyball). Hatteberg was seen as a very average catcher and hitter throughout the big leagues. He did his job well enough, however he did not stand out in popular statistical categories such as homeruns and RBIs. Unacknowledged by the Red Sox, however, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Comparison of ValuesObviously, the EPS find it imperative to be a professional police force that is accountable in their actions and integral in their methods. Also, they find it important to be courageous and treat people with respect. The city of Edmonton mentioned effective communication and sound management practices as a value towards creating their mission. This is similar to the EPS values of integrity, accountability, and respect. In order for both entities to meet their outlined missions / visions they will be required to ensure that among their employees and management there is an effective dialogue that promotes accountability amongst their employees. The Sandleford warren is a warren where power is those with a title. The Watership Down and Cowslip warrens are both warrens where power is those with wit. The Efrafa warren is a warren where power is strength. Power is distributed between the rabbits by those with wit, strength, and a title. Contrary to other larger living organisms such as humans, bacteria are able to transform and multiply at a more rapid pace, allowing these microorganisms to evolve and become resistant to medications that are commonly used to treat them such as antibiotics. These altered bacteria are oftentimes referred to as super bugs as they are unaffected by typical treatments involving the use of antibiotics (NIH, n.d.). As a result of this increased risk of spreading the MRSA infection, the Shepherrd Center implemented a way to identify MRSA within their specific patient population before they are admitted. They proposed that as individuals come in, each one is given nasal swabs while their medical histories and current evaluations are taken. This initial assessment allows for the healthcare staff to be better prepared for the possible infections that each patient may carry into their treatment facility. Since executing this practice, the Shepherred Center has seen a 43% reduction in healthcare acquired MRSA rates (Testing for MRSA, 2013). The Shepherred Center is able to continue with this initial screening assessment without increasing patient cost because the money saved from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Computer Network Topology Essay NETWORK TOPOLOGIES Computer network topology is an extension of basic topology. In this discipline we examine the configuration of computer system elements and their interconnections of network lattice. Physical network topology deals with the hardware components associated with the computer system including workstations, servers, remote terminals and the cabling associated with them. Logical network topology deals with representation of data flow between nodes which can be dynamically reconfigured once the selected network equipment such as router is available. Figure: 1 Bus topology: In this topology, a single cable is used to connect all the nodes/devices on the network. This cable is also called the network backbone. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the traffic intensity between the nodes is large then this topology is preferable. In this topology, a certain proportion of nodes have multiple paths to another destination node. Each of the traditional network topologies (Bus, Ring, Star and tree network topologies) had only single path from message source to message destination. Since Mesh Network topology provides multiple paths from source to destination so that greatly reduces the probability of single point network failure. The advantage of mesh network over other networks is that source node determines the best suitable route from source to destination based on factors such as connectivity, speed and pending node activities. Mesh topology is not cost effective, this proves to be a major disadvantage for setting up the network. Another disadvantage of this type of network is the need of a routing algorithm by each node for path computation. When each node in the network is directly connected to every other node then it is called a full mesh. This type of network topology works best with small number of nodes in the network. When some nodes in the network are indirectly connected to other nodes in the network then it is called partial mesh. Figure 1 provides an example of both partial and full mesh ... • 14. Social Deviance And Social Deviance Social deviance is considered a broad term, it tends to describe actions or behaviors that violate society s norms. Norms, in a simple context, are rules by, which members of society are expected to conform to. When it comes to discussing the term deviance, it tends to mean a person s failure to conform to unspoken rules established by society. Social deviance can have many forms and interpretations. Deviant acts are primarily relative to the setting because deviance in one place could be considered non deviance in another place. Theft, violence, murder, or any kind of criminal behavior, can be considered either deviant or non deviant, depending on the context. It s coming up to countries, establishments, and governing bodies to determine, which acts are and aren t acceptable. An example, could be murdering someone for drugs is not acceptable, but murdering someone in an act of self defense is. It can be concluded, all acts of deviance are subjected to review and accepted on the condition that it fits what society holds acceptable. Acts of deviance can result in some very positive outcomes.(Why is this here?) Everyone has unconsciously committed an act of deviance, in addition, have conformed to society s norms, as well. A un establish rule in society is to always pay for one s food prior to consumption. However, I do not always conform to this social norm. These injuries can also be classified as complete or incomplete. A complete SCI indicates no motor function below the site of injury while incomplete SCIs can have some remaining level of sensory and/or motor function below the level of injury. Most vertebral injuries occur along the most mobile areas of the spinal cord, including C1 C2, C4 C7, and T10 L2 (Huether, 2010). All of these injuries have the potential to be devastating. Spinal shock can occur, resulting in complete loss of function. This is a temporary occurrence and usually lasts up to 3 months after injury. It involves paralysis, loss of reflex, loss of bladder/bowel control and sexual dysfunction. It can also cause systemic changes, such as loss of temperature control, decrease in blood pressure, and poor venous circulation. When function returns, it is usually demonstrated by return of movement, reflexes, and bowel/bladder control (Heuther, 2008). As function returns, an uncompensated cardiovascular response can occur called autonomic hyperreflexia. This is a life threatening emergency and must be treated immediately. If left untreated, the result is death. Autonomic hyperreflexia displays as a dramatic rise in blood pressure, pounding headache, excessive diaphoresis (sweating), nausea and bradycardia. • 20. Analysis Of The Novel Asterios Polyp Color Color is commonly used in various art forms as a way to represent feeling and symbolize a greater meaning than a written text or black and white shading could. In David Mazzucchelli s graphic novel Asterios Polyp color is used to express both emotion and time through his use of the printer primary colors, cyan, magenta and yellow. Because of Mazzuccehlli s use of color and the abstract form of his comic panels, his comic is considered an alternative comic. Breaking the barriers of what readers are familiar with when it comes to the aesthetics of a comic, while at the same time being able to make it not seem vastly unfamiliar. Asterios Polyp takes the reader to a whole other world as they are navigated through the mind and memories of Asterios by narration from his dead twin brother. Similar to Mazzuccehlli, Paul Thomas Anderson incorporates meaning through color in his film Punch Drunk Love (2002). In this essay I will compare the use of color in both Asterios Polyp and Punch Drunk Love with regards to its significance in both, and how form is used to express both emotion and time. With regards to form, I will focus on the Mazzuccehlli s eccentric panel distribution and the variation of space in between the panels, which separates it from most comics. Anderson s film alike separates itself from the classic romantic movie form through both its plotline and cinematography. • 27. Analysis Of Borderlands By Gloria Anzaldua Speaking of Texas U.S. Southwest/Mexican border, the first thing appears in many people s mind is a horizontal line with US on the upper side and Mexico on the lower, as depicted in maps. However, in reality, a border serves more than just to separate states. In many occasions, it witnesses and bridges social networks that stretch across border. These two functions seem to contradict each other but in fact they exactly reflect the complex nature of borders, or, more realistically, borderlands, a term coined to uproot in people the misleading image of a line. In her book Borderlands, the author Gloria Anzaldua, as a descendent of Indians and Mexicans living close to the America Mexico border in Southern Texas, defies such dualistic and simplistic thinking about the border/double sided or multi sided dilemma, suggesting a new mestiza consciousness , a tolerance of ambiguity and a way of creating new personal culture from her accounting with all three cultures, as opposed to adopting only one of them without independent thinking and confronting against the rest. This new way of thinking stems from the reality of borderlands but instead of stopping there the author expands its application to establishing both cultural and sexual identities. Looking at this theme with a contemporary lens, I think has caused me to lose sight of what its real intentions were. I believe that this theme was meant to show the people that the taking of these new lands does not comes easy, particularly when there are people already living there. One thing colonialism always does, is make sure that of it the conquerors are always glorified, while the conquered are mainly silenced. Colonialism s main goal is the justification of either the enslavement or genocide of the native peoples, claiming to be saving these natives. As is stated in an online textbook by OpenStax The exploits of the most famous Spanish explorers have provided Western civilization with a narrative of European supremacy and Indian savagery. we see that the reason for colonialism is to gain power by any means necessary. The Implications Of The Rebound Effect On Resource Efficiency Summary The implications of the Rebound Effect on resource efficiency strategies implies that, if rebounds associated with energy savings are significant, then efficiency measures will have far less effect in reducing the rate of resource production, consumption and the increasing environmental impacts. Analysts such as; Harry Saunders (Breakthrough Institute (BI)), Steve Sorrell (UK Energy Research Center (UKERC)), and Robert Michaels (Institute for Energy Research (IER), claim that the effects of rebound are grossly underestimated and overlooked as result of imprecise quantifying models needed to influence policy changes for more effective green solutions. • 33. Fairies In A Midsummer Night s Dream Alas, love can be a great source of confusion and sorrow, but it is nevertheless probably the most powerful feeling a human being can experience. In Shakespeare s A Midsummer Night s Dream, Lysander says that the course of true love never did run smooth (Shakespeare 1.1.134), which is seen in the quarrels between the couples throughout the play. Shakespeare makes use chiefly of the fairies supernatural powers to settle the love conflicts and portrays the irrationality in love of the characters, thereby creating numerous comic situations and leading to the unification of the couples towards the end of the play. First, one of Shakespeare s techniques to bring about the comedic climax is the use of fairies whose supernatural powers create ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Consequently, Demetrius falls in love with Helena, as it should have been in the first place, so two [men] at once woo one [woman], as Puck says in line 3.2.118. Helena is completely mixed up when Demetrius states that he is now in love with her because then both of Hermia s suitors are now wooing her. The conflicts in love that Shakespeare presents here are a way for him to start solving the love issues by bringing the couples together using the fairies magic powers. Indeed, by making Demetrius fall in love with the lady who loves him, he pleases Helena, who should normally be happy to have won her quest. However, since Lysander is also in love with her, she is not fooled, and knows that there is something unusual going on. She suspects that the gentlemen are teasing her scornfully by flout[ing] at [her] insufficiency (2.2.128). More confusion arises when Hermia arrives, and Helena says in line 3.2.192 that she is one of this confederacy of people who make fun of her. Then, Hermia comes to think that it is actually Helena who is playing a trick on her: I scorn you not. It seems that you scorn me (3.2.221). This mixup and inability to understand other people s intentions are Shakespeare s ways of demonstrating how hard it is to understand the behaviour of love struck people. • 34. The Woman Of A Tradesman Essay recently discovered love won t meddle with her freedom and independence: Mr. Knightley as of now has a fortune of his own and even consents to move into Hartfield after their marriage. In spite of the fact that Emma is unmistakably a flight from the usual and ordinary Austen s depiction of women, the other female characters in the novel bring to light the challenges confronting ladies without monetary autonomy. Miss Bates, Jane Fairfax, and Harriet Smith represent three conceivable situations for the women who do not have high social status and position like Emma. Miss Bates never wedded and is reliant on her mother s insignificant wage. With the passage of time, her neediness builds, as does the measure of disparagement that she must persevere from those around her. Similarly, Harriet is poor and subject to those around her. The girl of a tradesman, she has few prospects until Robert Martin, and, on account of Emma s impact, is constantly in risk of extending past her social capacities. Jane Fairfax is considered as a foil to Emma, and, from various perspectives, appears to be more proper as an Austen s female character. She has the majority of Emma s beauty, magnificence, and insights, however fails to offer the pay of a refined and well off man, a reality that appears to fate her to a life as a tutor. It is through the character of Emma and her monetarily independence, Austen attacks the norms of the society which leaves women with so less options and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Do the Right Thing is a 1989 film by Spike Lee. According to Entertainment Weekly, it is one of the 25 most controversial films ever. It was deemed culturally significant by the Library of Congress in 1999, and then placed in the National Film Registry. The story follows the lives of citizens of the Bedford Stuyvesant District in New York City, on the hottest day of the summer, and what they do to cope with the heat. To summarize the entire plot it ends in a riot. I d like to analyze some of the situations found in the movie, and discuss how, if at all, it related to race relations in America. When watching the film, I wasn t overly interested in the plot. Nothing interesting happened (until the end of the movie) and there was nothing that made me (as a viewer) intrigued to continue watching. What I found important, however, was the character portrayals in the movie, and this is what kept me watching. I m not sure what Lee wanted from this movie, because to me, it seemed as if he was being a) overtly racist towards non African Americans, and b) stereotypical of his own race. Throughout the movie I was astounded by the portrayal of the black characters in this movie. Specifically, Buggin Out s character. While I realize that the character s name is a direct reference to his personality, I think Lee went a bit too far. For example, when the white cyclist accidentally scuffed his ... This song talks about revealing one s real self to the world instead of keeping it a secret. It tells us not to be afraid of what we have and who we really are but to be proud of it. The song is about being proud of ourselves without feeling embarrass or scared. The song begins with the speaker asking a few questions. The list of questions is basically to ask the listeners about their feelings. There is some time that we feel down, hopeless, and useless because we think that we are not good compared to others. The imagery of a plastic bag that is drifting through the wind conveys a sense of helplessness and having no control over one s direction as the plastic bag will easily change it direction depend on wind blow. Just below this part, the speaker illustrates using a house of cards as a simile. It shows how strong a person to withstand the surrounding pressure and the demands other people have on us. The repeated idea of wind blowing in this and the previous line alludes to the idea that the wind is a metaphor for the external pressure we face. In both comparison, we are being compared to plastic bags and a house of cards, putting us in a vulnerable state that can be easily destroyed by external pressure. The next part, the speaker use metaphor to compare the listeners to the fireworks. The fireworks are bright, vivid, explosive, and powerful. This comparison encourages the listeners to be themselves, and show the world about their ability. Another element that is used by the speaker is onomatopoeia. • 49. Lysander s Masculinity In The Disappointment The 17th century provides a treasure trove of literary greatness. The authors cultivated such a tight circle so that everyone s work kept in dialogue. Aphra Behn uses her poem, The Disappointment, as an opportunity to respond to common tropes found in male authored writing. In lines 111 140, Behn dismantles Lysander s masculinity in The Disappointment through comparisons to figures from Greek mythology, thus creating situational irony around his character s ego. In stripping Lysander of all his awful fires (ll. 113) in this selection, Behn reveals Lysander s true feelings of impotence and, by extension, women. Behn immediately ties Lysander to a warrior, a traditionally masculine figure, with his name. Lysander refers to the Spartan admiral in Greek mythology. Lysander s name undermines his masculinity because the fierce and aggressive reputation of the Spartan culture does not align with Lysander s sexual performance. Behn uses this identification to make him seem like he is an ideal romantic partner, but she describes him as [the] god of her desires,/ Disarmed of all his awful fires/ And cold as flowers bathed in the morning dew. (ll. 112 114) Behn refers to Lysander as a god and foreshadows the connections to other Greek figures later on in the selection. The fires Behn mentions represent Lysander s sexual passion. He is disarmed of them and bathes in the morning dew, which is a euphemism for his premature ejaculation. He is fiery, passionate beforehand, and ashamed of himself after. Impotence is a negative quality and does not fit the typical image of masculinity. Behn uses his impotence and Cloris s beauty to make allusions to mythological figures to provide further insight into their characters. After he proves to be impotent, Cloris runs away. Behn explains, Like lightning through the grove she hies,/ Or Daphne from the Delphic god. • 50. Case Study Partisan Elections 1) The vast majority of the Texas judiciary is chosen through partisan elections. Is this a good way to select judges? I personally agree with the PBS Frontline episode in that partisan elections can promote corruption in the political world. Thus, I do not believe that partisan elections is a good way of selecting judges. Due to its structure, judges are elected by the people based on their likeability/appeal and political party affiliation, aspects I do not think should be the primary reasons to vote in a judge. Rather, the judge should be judged and elected based on their character and accountability as a political figurehead. Citizens want a reliable, impartial, and sustaining judge who is able to make the right decision based on the laws and current facts provided. How can a judge be impartial when working a case if a lawyer present donated a large sum to his campaign during election? I, along with the public, do not think the judge could be impartial as evident by the poll taken and found that 83% of the public believe judges are influenced by outside campaign contributions (PBS Frontline). This is the same concept found in the baseball reference of allowing an umpire, who has been paid by baseball players, to impartially referee a game (PBS Frontline). In both situations, I do not believe the judges would be able to fairly and neutrally preside over the case, making the system potentially corrupt over time and not a preferred method of selecting judges. ...
