Sweetness and Power by Sidney Mintz
Sweetness and Power by Sidney Mintz
This part basically focuses on how Mintz tries to tie together the disparate geographies from Northern
Europe up to the Caribbean. It will be documented that Sweetness and Power by Sidney Mintz
actually discusses and illuminates the economic and social history revolving around sugar
consumption and production in Europe as well as its colonies, predominantly focusing on England.
Mintz examines the structure of power, which made it probable for sugar to actually turn out to be the
first luxury turned necessity that propelled a revolution within lifestyle and diet, principally within the
working class in the upsurge of capitalism and Industrial Revolution. Mintz further argues that the
contribution of sugar to several developed countries has been substantial, and that, as a result of the
history of sugar in England plus the restructuring within the working class, individuals in United
States and the United Kingdom have actually lost their autonomy towards food . From the novel we
will realize that Mintz essentially attempts to bring together the disparate geographies basically from
Northern Europe up to Caribbean. This has purely been due to the production of sugar in Europe. It
has resulted to trades between the neighboring countries which has increased the interactions between
the people through trade contracts. This evident as Mintz argues that The development of plantation
production beyond the Americas represented the

Pine Island Glacier is the Largest Sheet of Ice on Earch
Pine island Glacier is an enormous stream of ice flowing west northwest along the south of Hudson
mountains into the Amundsen Sea in Antarctica. This ice sheet is the largest chunk of ice on planet
Earth having a volume of a water equivalent to 57m of the global sea level. Hence, this basin has the
largest net contribution of ice to the sea in the world. In the past few decades, the pine island glacier
has been melting at an irreversible rate. Studies show that the ground line of the glacier has retreated
10 kilometres and is in the process of touching a 40 kilometre retreat. The glacier has been losing
approximately 20 billion tons of ice each year for the past quarter of the century and is estimated to
lose four times the ice in the coming quarter.
As said by a glaciologist with France s Grenoble Alps University, Gael Durand, the glacier has started
a phase of self sustained retreat and will continue its decline. The loss of ice from the glacier at this
rate would cause disasters and hence is the latest issue of climatic concern.
It has played a significant role in the rise of the global sea level. It is predicted that at this rate, the
glacier will alone increase the sea level by another centimetre in the next 20 years. The thinning of the
ice in West Antarctica contributes to 10% of the rise in the sea level today. The most recent
acceleration has been monotonic. The warm water flows above the marine ridge which results in
melting of the thick ice which comes out of

Edward Theodore Gein
Edward Theodore Gein (1906 1984), known as The Butcher of Plainfield, was an American serial
killer guilty of the murder of at least two women between 1947 and 1957.
Ed Gein was such a controversial and disturbing figure that his story inspired a lot of plots for thriller
movies and books, such as the character of Norman Bates in Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock and Buffalo
Bill in The Silence of the Lambs, a novel by Thomas Harris.
The life of Ed Gein was significantly marked by several factors: he spent his childhood with George,
an alcoholic and absent father, and Augusta, an overprotective and extremely religious mother,
obsessed by the idea that the world was populated by impure and sinful people. Ed had to face his
father s and brother s death, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The definition of attachment involves an affectional bond that infants need to form with a
differentiated and preferred individual that becomes an attachment figure, consisting in a sustained
nurturing relationship with the sensitive caregiver (Bowlbly, 1979). Attachment is conceptualized as
an evolutionary feature: individuals can create a secure base around which one is able to explore and
gain independence as well as a safe haven to which individuals can return and be reassured in a
situation of distress or danger (Ainsworth et al., 1978; Bowlby, 1969).
On the contrary, unresponsive or atypical ways of parenting can lead to aberrant behaviours or, if
others risk factors are present, to psychopathology (Jacobsen, Edelstein, Hoffman, 1994; Schaffer,
1996). Secure attachment with the primary caregiver is necessary for social and emotional regulation
as well as cognitive and resilience abilities(Bowlby, 1982; Ainsworth Bell,1970); insecure attachment
affects individuals life in many aspects, especially the ability to face distress (Macbeth et al., 2011),
and not too rarely the aftermaths of an insane attachment can culminate in personality disorders

Pros And Cons Of Hacking
Hacking is the process of attempting to gain or successfully gain, unauthorized access to computer
resources. Nowadays this technology has become a crime due to these aspects, we should not neglect
using the technologies for such criminal aspects, and instead we can use it in the better manner like
security purpose.
The Oxford English dictionary, states that there are three main definitions of hack in English: hacking
as cut with rough or heavy blows: hack off the dead branches, gain unauthorized access to data in a
computer: hacking private information from computers, and lastly a piece of computer code providing
a quick or inelegant solution to a particular problem: this hack doesn t work on machines that have a
firewall
On the other hand hacker originally intended one who makes furniture with an ax. Maybe because of
the blunt nature of that approach, the word came to mean someone who takes pleasure in an

The Effects Of Bacteria And Its Effects On The Environment
Introduction
Bacteria are important microorganisms because they are used by humans for many reasons (Goel,
2014). For example, they are being use in the production of food such as cheese and vinegar;
production of medical substances such as drugs; biotechnology, etcetera (Goel, 2014). Thus, such
bacteria have to be mass produced to be exploited for many purposes in the industry (Goel, 2014).
Batch culture, a closed system with limited supply of nutrients for growth, is commonly used for large
scale production of microorganisms (Hall, et al., 2014; Maier, 2009). This suggest that with the
accumulation of toxic waste products, changing pH, oxygen tension, and decreasing supply of
nutrients, cell growth will be inhibited and the culture will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Finally, bacteria cells enter the death phase as death rate exceeds growth rate (Hall, et al., 2014; Maier,
2009). The knowledge of the patterns of growth under specified conditions for any types of bacteria is
necessary for large scale production of cheese, drugs, etcetera (Goel, 2014; Maier, 2009).
Aim
Thus, the aim of the experiment is to show the typical phases of growth of a bacterial population,
Vibrio natriegens, as well as the calculation of the generation time. Also, this experiment aims to
determine how the availability of oxygen affects the growth of a bacterial population, Vibrio
natriegens. The population density will be determined turbidometrically.
Materials and Methods
12 ml of Vibrio natriegens culture was added to 200 ml of BHI medium contained in a pre warmed
flask (either shaking, aerated, or non shaking, non aerated) in a water bath at 37°C. 2 ml of samples of
the cultures were removed after inoculation and at 10 min intervals for approximately 2 hours for
measurement of turbidity by Optical Density (OD) at 590 nm. OD readings were recorded and plotted
using log scale (ordinate) against time after inoculation (abscissa). The mean generation time () and
mean growth rate (g) were calculated using the following equations respectively: and .
Results
To plot the growth curve of Vibrio natriegens under aerated or non aerated condition, 12 ml of Vibrio
natriegens culture was first

Life Of Pi Reality Vs Reality Essay
The novel Life of Pi is all about discerning between fact and belief. But which is reality? Yann Martel,
the author of the text, declares that reality is an interpretation, a choice of readings, a choice of stories.
The definition of reality, therefore, is not events which actually occur, but what is real to an individual.
Every person has a different reality, shaped by their experiences, beliefs, interpretations, readings and
stories. In other words, you choose your reality.
In Life of Pi, Pi is always searching for the better story . While Pi is describing agnostics, he
proclaims that they lack imagination and miss the better story (Martel 64) in life. He later inquires of
the men interviewing him, Which is the better story, the story with animals or the story without
animals? (Martel 317) after recounting two versions of his 227 days at sea. The better story is the story
which opens up the mind, the story which provides you with a new way of observing the world. Being
able to see the better story is an act of interpretation and creation. It is how we view the world and
generate meaning from it. In this case, the better story becomes your reality because it is what is real
to you. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An article from the Hermes Reality Creator Series by Tom DeLiso states that you create your world...
the power to change your world rests within yourself within your mind... Thought creation is a fact of
reality, all realities (DeLiso 2001). Michael Brown also claims that You are entirely the creator of your
reality... You create it with your thoughts, feelings and beliefs (Brown 2010). Both of these quotes
explain that we have control over and choose our reality, confirming Martel s idea that reality is our
own interpretation and choices of readings and stories. If we choose our reality, it is made up of stories
that have influenced us, as well as our own interpretations and

Problem of Tyranny of the Majority
Problem of Tyranny of the Majority Federalist papers were a series of essays written by Alexander
Hamilton, John Jay and James Madison and were publish with the pen name Publius . They were first
written to urge the citizens of New York City to support ratification of the proposed United States
Constitution. This paper will analyze the problem of tyranny of the majority in both society and the
government by using Madison s Federalist Papers No.10 and 51. It will also discuss how the
republican government and separation of powers provide remedies. In Federalist Paper No.10,
Madison defines factions as groups of people who have a common self interest. They would be
different to the individual rights of other citizens because they were involved with their own benefits.
He states that factions are inherent to human nature and citizens are no longer living under a state of
liberty. Madison states, liberty is to faction what air is to fire , this means that with out liberty there
cannot be any factions. By destroying the liberty, which is essential to its existence, the other, by
giving to every citizen the same opinions, the same passions, and the same interests. The difference
between those who have and those who don t would always be in existence, and is in fact one of the
most common unavoidable cause of factions. Individuals will always continue to associate themselves
with those who are on the same level, as long as we have different property and economic statues.

Shark Finning Research Paper
Due to the biological and ecological characteristics of sharks, they present an array of issues and
challenges for fishery management and conservation. Many shark species are characterized by
relatively late maturity, have slow growth and low reproductive rates (as they are Apex Predators),
which can make them extremely vulnerable to overexploitation. Concern has grown over the past few
years regarding the status of shark stocks and the sustainability of their numbers in the world of
fisheries. As the demand for shark products such as shark fin soup increases, the number of shark s
species begin to decline as a result of the current trend.

Gender Discrimination And The Workplace
Gender Discrimination
There are many things that a potential employee has to worry about when considering taking a
position within a company. Things like the amount of pay they need, the benefits that will be offered
to them, the values and morals of the company and whether or not those values and morals align with
their own, and if they could see themselves growing within this company throughout the years
because no one wants to work a dead end job for the rest of their life. However, along with all that an
employee has to worry about, there are also things that they should not have to worry about. Things
like equality, fair pay, ADA approved reasonable accommodations should they be required, and being
discriminated against, especially based on their gender.
Problem Situation
One of the most difficult things for someone to deal with within a work place is gender discrimination.
If we lived in a perfect world, it would not exist, but unfortunately we live in a world where all types
of discrimination exist. Gender discrimination happens all around the world and it takes a substantial
amount of time to change. Being discriminated against at your job because of your gender is a difficult
situation. It can negatively impact the organization by making the work environment uncomfortable.
When a gender discrimination problem arises within an organization you will usually also find
tension, decreased production, internal conflict, and increased employee turnover, all of which

Posse Comitatus Act Analysis
As Hurricane Katrina exposed the weaknesses of the levies, it did the same with the New Orleans
Police Department (NOPD) by showing its cracks within the force; it demonstrated a lack of law
enforcement. Despite its many infrastructures in Louisiana, most failed in the aftermath of Hurricane
Katrina. Along with local and state law enforcement, the armed Forces can augment local authorities.
Lack of law enforcement and the enactment of the Posse Comitatus Act yielded new laws to aid after a
natural disaster
For Local, State, and Federal Governments, the hours after a natural disaster are the most vital, it
would be difficult to enforce order in the absence of a police force. Amid any natural disaster people
are inclined to flee the affected area or protect their own family and property. In the case of the New
Orleans Police Department it is reported that roughly a third of the force abandoned their post, which
created a vacuum. During post Hurricane Katrina seventy six officers were fired for abandoning their
positions during a major crisis, eleven officers were fired for neglecting their duties Forty one officers

President Rutherford B. Hayes signed the Posse Comitatus Act into law on June 18, 1878. The original
intent of the Posse Comitatus Act was to end the utilization of government troops to police states
during elections in the former Confederate States. The Navy and the Marine Corps are not included in
the Act, but rather DoD Regulations subject them to it. The Posse Comitatus Act does not apply to the
Coast Guard because this service falls under the Department of Homeland Security. In 2005, President
Bush urged congress to authorize the use of federal troops, under the Posse Comitatus Act, to assist in
a law enforcement in Louisiana to help quell looting and lawlessness. The National Guard remains a

Cymothoa Exigua Research Paper
Cymothoa exigua is slowly becoming a widely known crustacean like parasite. Most people tend to
refer to this parasite as the tongue eating louse due to its evasion and reproduction mechanisms. This
parasite is only attracted to fish but most importantly the snapper fish. Cymothoa exigua is known as
protandric hermaphrodites because they begin as males and later in their life cycle they end up
switching sexes. When Cymothoa exigua causes the fish to lose its tongue, it does not entirely affect
the fish in any other way.
Life Cycle/ Reproduction
The life cycle of Cymothoa exigua is unknown but one thing for sure is that they undergo sexual
reproduction. Scientists believe that when the juvenile parasite first attaches to the fish s gills, they

The Effects Of Deceptive Pictures On Hong Kong
2.3.2. Deceptive Pictures
According to Kim (2004), there are several instances that he has witnessed of the deceptive pictures
presented in the websites of the online retail stores. The consumers correspondingly find a different
product during the purchase of the product, which leads to extreme level of dissatisfaction from the
customers end. Subsequently, the consumers find it difficult to purchase the product again from the
same retail store. Lodorfos et al (2006) in this regard commented that the online retail organisations
those have witnessed these sort of deceptive pictures in order to attract online consumers have
ultimately not been able to retain the same. Similar instances are also notable among the consumers in
Hong Kong, who are highly conscious regarding the quality aspects of a product. Therefore, it is
eminent that deceptive pictures are regarded as one of the factors that restrict consumers in Hong
Kong to purchase products through the online platform (Lodorfos et al, 2006).
2.3.3. Diminished Instant Satisfaction
Mittal (2013) suggested that in online retail shopping the consumers receives the products after certain
amount of time. It is worth mentioning that although in Hong Kong the delivery of the online
purchased products are relatively quick, still it is not feasible to witness immediate consumption of the
product at the time purchase. Bashir (2013) further commented that this infeasibility to deliver the
products immediately leads to the diminishing of

Comparing The Immigrant Contribution And A Quilt Of A Country
The two stories, The immigrant Contribution by John F. Kennedy, and A Quilt of a Country by Anna
Quindlen are similar in many ways, but the passages are also very different from each other. Even
though they are both the same type of writing, they both have very different approaches on how to get
across their ideas to the reader. Quindlen who wrote A Quilt of a Country used a formal diction,
whereas John F. Kennedy used a concrete diction in The immigrant Contribution . Kennedy makes it
very clear that every American citizen has either been an immigrant or come from the descendants of
immigrants. Unlike Kennedy, Anna Quindlen talks more about the ethnic groups that make up
America. She also talks about terrorist attacks that happened

Zindal Kordan Analysis
Nineteen year old Zindal Kordan stood at the window on the 409th floor of the unfinished Pax City

into view, motionless in the flutter of movements around Zindal. When Zindal met his eyes, he was
surprised to find sorrow there, actual sorrow. He said nothing. The group of people lifted Zin from the
table and lowered him into a narrow container. They pulled a door over the top of it was it a coffin?
Were they burying him alive? Panic burned in his stomach but light still made its way to his
unresponsive eyes. Again, he tried to move, and again, he failed. Something started to churn beneath
him. The temperature dropped until he could see his breath. A thick, freezing liquid pumped out of the
holes in the walls surrounding him. It inched higher, sending goosebumps down his arms. He was
going to drown. The realization sprung tears from his eyes, and again, he looked for Io. The liquid
covered his legs and chest, inched its way up to his ears, seeped into his mouth and nose. He held his
breath for as long as he could, but soon, he was forced to inhale. To his surprise and relief, he could

Unmanned Aircraft Systems ( Uas )
Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) have become a quickly growing part of the aviation community
over the last five to ten years. More and more of these aircraft are flying in the National Airspace
System (NAS) with each passing year, without any set rules governing their operation. With the
growing population of UAS in the NAS, for military, civil, and commercial use, the need for
regulation is becoming increasingly obvious. How to regulate this type of aircraft is no simple task.
Taking into consideration the many factors of these aircraft such as size, purpose, who is using them,
and location of use, it is difficult to determine what regulation is required. That is the task that has
been set before the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). To determine what type of regulation is
needed to integrate and ensure the safe operation of UAS in the NAS since the skies that they share
are shared with manned aircraft. Integration of UAS into the NAS
Since the first flight of Orville and Wilbur Wright s aircraft at Kitty Hawk, the development of new
aircraft types and technology in these and existing aircraft has moved along at a quick and steady
pace. Moreover, since 1903, aircraft limits continually have been pushed and surpassed. Aircraft now
fly higher, faster, farther and carry more cargo or passengers than ever before. Nevertheless, it would
only seem logical the next step in aviation evolution is removal of the human factor in flight.

Analysis Of Woodrow Wilson s The Straw That Broke The...
Following WW1, Europe was left in a bad state. Empires were destroyed and states were being
formed. The Minority question that arose following the war, albeit important, was not as much of a
destabilizing force in this time as people like to think. It was only the byproduct of events that took
place. These events include the publishing of the fourteen points, the settlements made during the
Paris Peace conference, and the creation of state constitutions. The minority question was, in essence,
the straw that broke the camel s back, breaking the already damaged infrastructure of post war Europe.
In order to answer the question on why minority rights became such a destabilizing force after the war,
we must first look at what caused this problem to become the forefront of many European minds. Two
pivotal events took place following the war that left stains on Europe; stains that, to some, indirectly
led to the start of World War 2. The first and most important event was the publishing of Woodrow
Wilson s fourteen points on January 8, 1918. These points were created in the hope to promote peace
and harmony among the recently war stricken nations of Europe. One prominent point that came from
this document was the idea of self determination. This encouraged people to form their own nation
where they could choose rulers and live amongst others who share the same culture. This piqued the
interest of the millions of people living in the various, and heavily

Advantages Of Prep School
A prep school is a place for students to learn, grow, and practice skills that will help them be
successful later in life. They offer different possibilities for students, that other schools often cannot or
do not have available. While public schools are where the majority of students go, due to a variety of
factors, prep schools are frequently more beneficial than public schools. Prep schools have better
facilities and higher success rates, and are therefore superior to public schools, despite what Holden
experiences. A prep school is a school that offers a higher set of learning to its students, through
various advantages. They only accept the best of the best students, which is one of the reasons that so
many of their students go on to attend prestigious colleges as well (College Admission from Prep
Schools | Ivy Coach Admissions Blog). These schools are known for offering diverse academic
programming led by teacher scholars, many of whom hold advanced degrees in their subject areas
(The 50 Best Boarding Schools in the U.S). Holden Caulfield in the novel Catcher in the Rye by J.D.
Salinger attended prep school, and although he disliked it immensely, he still formed a close
relationship with one teacher in particular. That teacher, Mr. Antolini offers Holden a place to stay
when he needs it, which shows the kind of bond formed between teacher and student at a prep school,
compared to a public school. Shamus Raham Khan says small classes and individualized attention

Preparing exit strategies now, not only for fiscal stimulus, but also for government support for the
financial sector and hard hit industries, will enhance the effectiveness of these measures in the short
term, as this depends upon clarity regarding the pace with which such measures will be withdrawn.
Since financial markets, businesses and consumers are forward looking, expectations are factored into
decision making today. The precise timing of exit strategies will depend on the strength of the
recovery, the exposure of Member States to the crisis and prevailing internal and external imbalances.
Part of the fiscal stimulus stemming from the EERP will taper off in 2011, but needs to be followed up
by sizeable fiscal consolidation in following years to reverse the unsustainable debt build up. In the
financial sector, government guarantees and holdings in financial institutions will need to be gradually
unwound as the private sector gains strength, while carefully balancing financial stability with
competitiveness considerations. Close coordination will be important. Vertical coordination between
the various strands of economic policy (fiscal, structural, financial) will ensure that the withdrawal of
government measures is properly sequenced an important consideration as turning points may differ
across policy areas.

Traditional Solar Cells Advantage And Applications
Traditional solar cells advantage and applications Solar cells technology, as a clean power source of
new generation, has been great developed in the past 35 years. The market needed for this for the solar
cells technology is also greatly increased while module cost is decreased.
However, around 80 percent of all the solar panels sold around the world is traditional solar cells,
because of their efficiency for residential use. The applications for traditional solar cells are still
dominant in the area. And here are some main types of traditional solar cells and their applications.
Monocrystalline silicon cells Mono crystalline silicon cell technology is the oldest solar cell
technology, but it s still the most popular and efficient solar cell technology nowadays. The
monocrystalline silicon module is made from a single silicon crystal; it is usually complex and huge.
And its color is usually blue or black. As the earliest solar cell technology, it has a lot of advantages
that s make it still popular in the area. One of the most important one is its longevity, some websites
indicate that the single crystalline solar panels can last up to 50 years, until 2015, some panels are still
doing their duties after 40 years. Even though the panel will suffer an efficiency drop as time goes by,
it is still a very reliable in the long run. Its efficiency is another big advantage; single crystalline cells

are informed by the author s purpose, the genre of the work, and the effects of the depiction upon the
rest of the specific work. These works are of course Thucydides , The History of the Peloponnesian
War and Plato s Symposium, and the man discussed is the Athenian giant, Alcibiades of the
Alcmaeonidae. The authors, of course, have their own aims and reasons for writing their works, Plato,
writing an allegory on love likely to defend his teacher Socrates, and Thucydides, to inform on what
he believes to be the most significant war in history. The genres of the works being philosophy and
history respectively also affects the rhetoric of Alcibiades speech; as well as his greater portrayals in
the works. It is important to note the differences in the depictions as they are significant not only to
understanding the literary merit of the works, but also furthering the knowledge with respect to the
author s motives and the state of higher opinion on a maverick of a man in the late 5th and early 4th
Centuries BC in Athens. The first significant variance one must note between the author s works is the
rhetoric and aims of the speeches Alcibiades makes in the two works. In Plato s Symposium all the
major characters are at a dinner party and are giving speeches about eros, the Greek concept of love,
and there is quite an awkward relationship squabble occurring between Socrates and

Peaceful Resistance In Henry David Thoreau s Civil...
In a free society such as the United States, peaceful resistance usually comes in the form of peaceful
protests such as people marching in the streets or people staying put in a public area for symbolic
reasons. Peaceful resistance of this form is allowed because the government of this country seems to
support an ideal set forth in Henry David Thoreau s Civil Disobedience: That government is best
which governs least. In other words, the role of government is to protect the individual freedoms of its
people, and the constitution that the United States government adheres to works to protect those
individual freedoms, including the freedom of speech. Therefore, peaceful resistance in the form of
peaceful protests are protected by the constitution. And even when peaceful protests cause individuals
to break laws, these actions can bear fruits of justice and advancement within society.
Henry David Thoreau is an example of the morality within peaceful protests. By not paying poll ...

Examples Of Dualism In Snow Falling On Cedars
Welcome esteemed guests, ladies and gentlemen, today I am here at this forum to speak to you about
the power of the media, and the effect that it has on our lives. Like many things people experience, the
media can change an individual s perspective. It possesses the power to influence and sway existing
attitudes, values and beliefs on issues in society. By doing so, text creators are able to create a desired
context; an in invited reading in such was so that the audience has a narrow perspective. As such,
through the use of specific literary and cinematic techniques created by these invited readings, media
texts are able to persuade groups to favour values and ideas that align those of the text. The novel,

It can be inferred from the title that this cartoon is set in America, similar to the novel s setting. Like
Guterson s use of duality, the cartoon clearly contrasts the different social experiences between races
by posing the same scenario. In both frames respectively, a White and African American child propose
the same statement, I m goin out mom! . However, the difference between frames is the response by
the assumed mother. The view pertaining to the white child dictates a simple answer, put on your
jacket , whereas the African American view dictates the response in the first frame as well as measures
to prevent the attention of authorities. Clearly, Sargent s use of text implies that the African American
youth population experience a harsher life due to prejudice. This is demonstrated by just a fraction of
the instructions the African American child is given, don t make any sudden moves and keep your
mouth shut around police . This scenario of race and cultural difference is undeniably relatable to the
American and Japanese populations of Snow Falling on Cedars . Within the novel, after the attack on
pearl harbour, Fujiko huddles her daughters and delivers a line similar to that of assumed African
American mother in the cartoon, We bend our head, we bow and are silent, because we understand
that by ourselves, alone, we are nothing

Broken Bone Vs Closed Fracture
1. The rib cage shields both the lungs and the heart from any danger. The skull also functions to
protect the brain from dangerous collisions. Another bone that helps protect an organ is the pelvic
girdle. It protects the bladder and several other organs from both the reproductive and urinary system.
2. An open fracture would affect the body s homeostasis more than a closed fracture because it breaks
through the skin. In a closed fracture, the body only worries about the fractured bone, but in an open
fracture, the body has to worry about both the fractured bone and the skin that was ripped. However,
both fractures can cause other body systems to go awry, but the open fracture causes more damage to
the body. 3. Doctors can treat broken bones

Altruism and Egotism Portrayed in Ayn Rand s The Fountainhead
In the world today, altruism is associated with the common good of man while egotism is associated
with evil and non consideration of the fellow man. In contrast to the world s view, Ayn Rand provides
and proves a new definition for egotism through her book, The Fountainhead. She defines egotism in
the context of ethics. She states: Man every man is an end in himself, not a means to the ends of
others; he must live for his own sake, neither sacrificing himself to others nor sacrificing others to
himself; he must work for his rational self interest, with the achievement of his own happiness as the
highest moral purpose of his life. Howard Roark, the protagonist in the book is a selfish and egoistical

The ego is strengthened as the only source of survival by this theory; and the man who strengthens
this theory is Howard Roark. Selfishness is not defined as the lack of care for others rather; it is
defined as letting others decide for themselves. A selfish man is defined as a man who holds his truth
above all things and against all men (678). Being selfish is the only way to stand alone as a means of
breeding success and strength. Heroism is closely associated with egoism because heroism entails
independence likewise egoism.
A hero an undeterred individual who comes out triumphantly despite obstacles faced (699). In a time
when conventionality was the name of the game in architecture, no one dared to come up with a new

the tide. He came up with a modernistic view of architecture, risking the label of criminal rather than
of a great man, which he truly deserved (25). He rated the Parthenon as rotten even though all have
said the Parthenon was a great masterpiece. He voiced and practiced a modernistic style that would
combine Renaissance, Gothic and any other architectural style possible. Doing this made him vilified
by the public and fellow architects spearheaded by the A.G.A. This confusing yet true idea Howard
Roark came up with made every one in the field of architecture call him an egoist. He was called an

ceding the property to the U. S. after the Mexican American War of 1846 1848. Mexico and most of
South America had been settled by Spain upon encountering the New World in 1492. So South
American Spanish colonies spoke Spanish, had a ruling class that was not native born called

Essay on Comparing Dubliners and To the Lighthouse
Comparing Dubliners and To the Lighthouse
In Dubliners and To the Lighthouse, James Joyce and Virginia Woolf explore the depressing results of
lives devoid of growth or meaning versus those who dare to live their lives in spite of all strife and
adversity. Joyce and Woolf are both concerned with the meaninglessness of stagnant lives, the first
operating in pre WWI Ireland, the second in England during and after the war. The Dead and To the
Lighthouse both reveal the despair of lives that occupy but do not fill the short span of time between
birth and inevitable death.
With The Dead , Joyce brings his lament for Ireland s plight to its depressing yet strangely peaceful
conclusion. Like all the previous stories in Dubliners, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the dinner table, the party begins to discuss the greatest legitimate opera (209) singers of the past
and present. Soon the reader must realize that all these celebrated figures are either long since dead, or
living singers who are so obscure that only a single person has ever heard of them. It seems that the
present society is totally devoid of all beauty, for the glory of the past is lost, and the buds and timid
blooms of the present are fatally obscured.
Yet still these people gather yearly around the massive banquet table to engage again and again in the
same sort of conversation, as Gabriel himself notes:
But yet, continued Gabriel, his voice falling into a softer inflection, there are always in gatherings

absent faces that we miss here to night. Our path through life is strewn with many such sad memories:
and were we to brood upon them always we could not find the heart to go on bravely with our work
among the living. We have all of us living duties and living affections which claim, and rightly claim,

Public Nudity And Public Sexuality
As most of us understand, a large portion of the English speaking countries now claims themselves to
be liberate among the public and this could be observed through the legal system they now possess.
However, some resident still questions the system by evaluating the level of freedom of their actions.
One of the few general hotly debated subjects of freedom is public nudity, where there are residents
that totally reject this idea and there are others whom receive this as a part of the freedom of actions.
Public nudity to some is how we humans are designed to be, it is the nature, and on the other hand the
culture formed upon us believes nudity can be carried out only in private otherwise it is violation. And
as more issues regarding public nudity arises from the society this topic is taken into account of the
formation of new legislations, this action by the government is to protect the public from potential
harm. However, public nudity has not always been a widely discussed topic due to the religious nature
these countries started on. The distinctive nature and history of a country will determine the type of
legal structure and the legislations that create boundaries in public nudity actions. I have chosen three
countries to research on, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. These are all English speaking
countries but they hold relatively different legal structures and legislations on nudity. There are 53

Symbolism within in A Worn Path
Symbolism is a literary device that uses objects or events that hides the even greater idea beyond what
the text it gives you. For example, the bald eagle may seem like a fascinating bird, but to the eyes of
an American the bald eagle represents freedom. Symbolism can be found throughout our everyday
lives. Shoes have logos that are used to show what brand of shoes ones self is wearing, also money
may seem like just paper, but it can also represent power.
In the short story, A Worn Path, the main character Phoenix Jackson ventures through the forest to get
to her main destination Natchez. Phoenix Jackson is an old, little woman that is blind and needs to be
carrying a cane due to her almost complete blindness. Phoenix Jackson travels through the dangerous
forest alone. On her venture she meets many obstacles such as a crossing a river by walking over a log
that lay across it. During her advances she often drifts into a daydream and dreams about events
happening, but it turns out to be her mind playing games on her. While on her way to Natchez she
encounters a white hunter, the hunter shows no respect for her by calling her granny and even pointing
a gun at old Phoenix herself. During Phoenix s time of living segregation was still prevalent because

Descriptive Basketball Game
When you re stressed out where do you go? We all have a place where we can go and relieve our
stress. Whether it s a physical place or a state of mind we all have a place where we feel untouchable.
Where the never ending piles of class work and the constant nagging of friends seem to dissolve like
kool aid in water until left with nothing but a smooth mixture of me, myself, and I. For me this place
is the court: the basketball court. When I open the doors of the gym I am met with the familiar sound
of squeaking shoes and balls bouncing on the hardwood floors. I go to sit on the aged wooden
bleachers and watch the game that is currently taking place. The weight my worries are being lifted a
little as I get wrapped up in the game. The guard is bringing the ball up the court his eyes scanning for
an opening to either pass or shoot the ball. The opposing team has every man covered leaving little to
no room for the guard and his teammates to set up the play. As soon as the guard sets foot pass half
court two defenders go to trap him. Wrong move. The guard quickly, almost effortlessly sidesteps one
of the defenders and dribbles the ball through the leg of the other and proceeds to pass the ball to one
of his teammates who take the ball straight to the rim. I can t help but smile at this perfectly executed
play as the game continues. There are several more plays like this made on both sides but, they all
seem to dull in comparison with the first one.
While their game is coming to an end, my problems slowly begin to creep their way back into my
mind as I begin to stretch. Loosing up my body for the intense workout that is coming. As they get off
the court I decide to begin my workout with some basic ball handling drills. Through the left leg,
behind the back, around the right, switch, through the right leg, behind the back, around the left leg,
repeat. The ball flowing smoothly through my legs like water as I continue to increase the pace until I
ve done this ten times on each leg. As I continue my problems are beginning to matter less and less.
Next, I start my shooting drills and I am soon welcomed by the feeling of the ball leaving my hand.
And like when an archer releases his arrow from his bow and is

The Historical Context Of The Laguna Pueblo Reservation
The historical context of the Laguna Pueblo reservation deals with the Native American culture, as
well as with the differing racial views of that time.
The people of the Laguna Pueblo reservation had a respect for the land they lived on. Exhibiting the
beliefs of most Native American tribes, they always hunted in certain places and knew the balance of
the earth. When other people, the white people (page 172), started to overtake the land, they knew
they would not be able to stop them from demolishing both the land and the animals that lived there.
This shows the evolution of the Native American culture and life as other settlers with differing beliefs

Societal Standards of Feminine Beauty Essay
While women have made historical strides in the past decades, the culture at large is bound to the
narcissistic constraints about how women should look. These unattainable beauty standards, largely
proliferated through the media, have drastic impacts on women and their body image. Societal
standards of feminine beauty are presented in all forms of popular and alternative media, bombarding
women with images that portray the ideal body. Such standards of beauty are almost completely far
fetched for most women. A majority of the celebrities and models seen on television and in
advertisements are well below what is considered normal for American women. The average
American woman is 5 4 tall and weighs 140 pounds, while the average American ... Show more

More than half of teenage girls are, or think they should be, on diets. They want to lose some or all of
the 40 pounds that females naturally gain between ages 8 and 14. About 3% of these teens go too far,
becoming anorexic or bulimic (Being Truly Beautiful). Mainstream magazines and advertisements are
another potent source of idealized images of women. Findings of one study indicate that 83% of
teenage girls reported reading fashion magazines for about 4.3 hours each week (Thompson Heinberg,
1999). Female s motivation behind reading these magazines and advertisements are to obtain
information about beauty, fitness, grooming and style. Magazine and advertisements are marketed to
help women better themselves by providing information and products that are supposed to make them
look and feel better. Women read these magazines with the hope that is they follow the advice given,
they will be more acceptable and attractive (Serder, Female Body Image and the Mass Media:
Perspectives on How Women Internalize the Ideal Beauty standard). Marketing strategies lure women
into purchasing these forms of media, and most have the potential to be a powerful influence on
women s sense of self satisfaction with their appearance. The social comparison theory offers some
level of explanation for how media images actually come to impact the way women feel about their
bodies. Social comparison theory examines how individuals evaluate themselves in relation to peers,

The Causes Of The Cultural Revolution Of China
Revolution: the deconstruction phase in the circle of societal reconstruction. In most cases, the society
rebuilds itself, improves, takes mistakes from the past, and makes sure to establish itself as something
new, distancing itself from its past faults. However, that is not always the case. The cultural revolution
of China, lasting from 1966 1976, was a revolution unlike many others; it resulted in the destruction of
traditional Chinese culture, as well as the reshaping of the Chinese political mentality.
Mao Zedong, the chairman of the Communist Party of China, was the chief instigator of the
revolution. Much of his motivations stemmed from his poor relationships with other party leaders.
This tension with the other members was caused by the Great Leap Forward, an attempt by Mao to
increase agricultural and industrial production in China within a very short span of time. This resulted
in the overworking of farmers, a famine with an estimated 40 million deaths, and a disgrace for Mao
(Ramzy). Even his intended successor, Liu Shaoqi, who was groomed to perfection by Mao himself,
turned his back on him after the disastrous attempt at reforming the agricultural industry. However,
due to Mao s well placed use of propaganda, he managed to climb back to power, establish a loyal
base, and spread his ideology across China. He believed the Communist Party to be corrupt and need
to be cleansed of those poisoned by intellectualism. Liu Shaoqi, the newly elected president of China,

How The Bible Changed My Life
How The Bible Changed My Life Intimidating was the first word that came to mind when I set out to
read The Bible from start to finish. Containing 66 books, written by about 40 authors over the span of
nearly 1,500 years, and as the most widely accepted true word of God, my mission seemed more of a
chore than an adventure. My parents stressed the importance of reading both fiction and nonfiction
since my birth. By ten months old I could identify and sound out every letter of the alphabet, and they
were stunned when they noticed my friends could not. Books quickly consumed my childhood. I read
everything, from The Magic Tree House to The Royal Diaries to nearly every Bluebonnet Book
available. And when space on my bookshelf dwindled after the addition of classics like Heidi and
David Copperfield, I adored animal encyclopedias and a children s dictionary. School was a breeze. I
loved every minute of it: reading, learning, pleasing my parents and teachers with good grades, and
making friends. As a zealous bookworm, my interests leaned more along the language arts, history,
and music ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I won t say my fears don t rear their heads every once in a while, but they no longer have the same
crippling hold that they once did. I am closer with my family, I have more friends, and I ve learned
that my body can only take so much pressure before it will break. I know my limits now and how to
push without exceeding. My health has improved and I find myself smiling more than I did before. I
thank God for my life, for His sacrifice, and for the good and the bad in my life, because I wouldn t be
the same without both. I thank Him for the written word, and most of all for His Word. Nothing else
no book, poem, speech, lyric, script, or short story can have anywhere near the same impact that the

A simple intranet consists of an internal email system and perhaps a message board service. More
sophisticated intranets include Web sites and databases containing company news, forms, and
personnel information. Besides email and groupware applications, an intranet generally incorporates
internal Web sites, documents, and or databases. The business value of intranet solutions is generally
accepted in larger corporations, but their worth has proven very difficult to quantify in terms of time
saved or return on investment.
An extranet is a computer network that allows controlled access from the outside for specific business
or educational purposes. Typically a company extranet is used for people to connect to the company to
conduct any number of tasks behind a password protected area. A common application of an extranet
is a partner area where partners and resellers can download sales resources such as graphics and
content to aid in the sales process. Sometimes referred to as a portal, an extranet can also be used to
service clients who need support for products and services purchased from the organization. An
enterprise level extranet application can be built upon most technology available today, including dot
net, asp, php, html, and other systems. Extranets are extensions to, or segments of, private intranet
networks that have been built in many corporations for information sharing and ecommerce. Most
extranets use the Internet as the entry point for

The Health Disparities In The Hispanic Population
The information cited in this paper provides an insight into the health disparities that exist in the
Hispanic population. It shows that Hispanics have increased rates of health problems when compared
to other racial groups in the United States. These disparities have been shown to be connected to
socioeconomic status. The information cited in this paper show that Hispanics have lower
socioeconomic status than whites and their low socioeconomic status is implicated as a risk factor for
health status. Furthermore, Hispanics face increased barriers to accessing care, receive poorer quality
care, and ultimately experience worse health outcomes. For example, Hispanics have higher morbidity
rates for diabetes, obesity, cancer, asthma and proliferative

  • 2. Sweetness and Power by Sidney Mintz Sweetness and Power by Sidney Mintz This part basically focuses on how Mintz tries to tie together the disparate geographies from Northern Europe up to the Caribbean. It will be documented that Sweetness and Power by Sidney Mintz actually discusses and illuminates the economic and social history revolving around sugar consumption and production in Europe as well as its colonies, predominantly focusing on England. Mintz examines the structure of power, which made it probable for sugar to actually turn out to be the first luxury turned necessity that propelled a revolution within lifestyle and diet, principally within the working class in the upsurge of capitalism and Industrial Revolution. Mintz further argues that the contribution of sugar to several developed countries has been substantial, and that, as a result of the history of sugar in England plus the restructuring within the working class, individuals in United States and the United Kingdom have actually lost their autonomy towards food . From the novel we will realize that Mintz essentially attempts to bring together the disparate geographies basically from Northern Europe up to Caribbean. This has purely been due to the production of sugar in Europe. It has resulted to trades between the neighboring countries which has increased the interactions between the people through trade contracts. This evident as Mintz argues that The development of plantation production beyond the Americas represented the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Pine Island Glacier is the Largest Sheet of Ice on Earch Pine island Glacier is an enormous stream of ice flowing west northwest along the south of Hudson mountains into the Amundsen Sea in Antarctica. This ice sheet is the largest chunk of ice on planet Earth having a volume of a water equivalent to 57m of the global sea level. Hence, this basin has the largest net contribution of ice to the sea in the world. In the past few decades, the pine island glacier has been melting at an irreversible rate. Studies show that the ground line of the glacier has retreated 10 kilometres and is in the process of touching a 40 kilometre retreat. The glacier has been losing approximately 20 billion tons of ice each year for the past quarter of the century and is estimated to lose four times the ice in the coming quarter. As said by a glaciologist with France s Grenoble Alps University, Gael Durand, the glacier has started a phase of self sustained retreat and will continue its decline. The loss of ice from the glacier at this rate would cause disasters and hence is the latest issue of climatic concern. It has played a significant role in the rise of the global sea level. It is predicted that at this rate, the glacier will alone increase the sea level by another centimetre in the next 20 years. The thinning of the ice in West Antarctica contributes to 10% of the rise in the sea level today. The most recent acceleration has been monotonic. The warm water flows above the marine ridge which results in melting of the thick ice which comes out of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ed Gein was such a controversial and disturbing figure that his story inspired a lot of plots for thriller movies and books, such as the character of Norman Bates in Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock and Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs, a novel by Thomas Harris. The life of Ed Gein was significantly marked by several factors: he spent his childhood with George, an alcoholic and absent father, and Augusta, an overprotective and extremely religious mother, obsessed by the idea that the world was populated by impure and sinful people. The definition of attachment involves an affectional bond that infants need to form with a differentiated and preferred individual that becomes an attachment figure, consisting in a sustained nurturing relationship with the sensitive caregiver (Bowlbly, 1979). Attachment is conceptualized as an evolutionary feature: individuals can create a secure base around which one is able to explore and gain independence as well as a safe haven to which individuals can return and be reassured in a situation of distress or danger (Ainsworth et al., 1978; Bowlby, 1969). On the contrary, unresponsive or atypical ways of parenting can lead to aberrant behaviours or, if others risk factors are present, to psychopathology (Jacobsen, Edelstein, Hoffman, 1994; Schaffer, 1996). Secure attachment with the primary caregiver is necessary for social and emotional regulation as well as cognitive and resilience abilities(Bowlby, 1982; Ainsworth Bell,1970); insecure attachment affects individuals life in many aspects, especially the ability to face distress (Macbeth et al., 2011), and not too rarely the aftermaths of an insane attachment can culminate in personality disorders (Crawford et al., ... • 6. The Effects Of Bacteria And Its Effects On The Environment Introduction Bacteria are important microorganisms because they are used by humans for many reasons (Goel, 2014). For example, they are being use in the production of food such as cheese and vinegar; production of medical substances such as drugs; biotechnology, etcetera (Goel, 2014). Thus, such bacteria have to be mass produced to be exploited for many purposes in the industry (Goel, 2014). Batch culture, a closed system with limited supply of nutrients for growth, is commonly used for large scale production of microorganisms (Hall, et al., 2014; Maier, 2009). This suggest that with the accumulation of toxic waste products, changing pH, oxygen tension, and decreasing supply of nutrients, cell growth will be inhibited and the culture will ... Aim Thus, the aim of the experiment is to show the typical phases of growth of a bacterial population, Vibrio natriegens, as well as the calculation of the generation time. Also, this experiment aims to determine how the availability of oxygen affects the growth of a bacterial population, Vibrio natriegens. The population density will be determined turbidometrically. Materials and Methods 12 ml of Vibrio natriegens culture was added to 200 ml of BHI medium contained in a pre warmed flask (either shaking, aerated, or non shaking, non aerated) in a water bath at 37°C. 2 ml of samples of the cultures were removed after inoculation and at 10 min intervals for approximately 2 hours for measurement of turbidity by Optical Density (OD) at 590 nm. OD readings were recorded and plotted using log scale (ordinate) against time after inoculation (abscissa). • 7. Life Of Pi Reality Vs Reality Essay The novel Life of Pi is all about discerning between fact and belief. But which is reality? Yann Martel, the author of the text, declares that reality is an interpretation, a choice of readings, a choice of stories. The definition of reality, therefore, is not events which actually occur, but what is real to an individual. Every person has a different reality, shaped by their experiences, beliefs, interpretations, readings and stories. In other words, you choose your reality. In Life of Pi, Pi is always searching for the better story . While Pi is describing agnostics, he proclaims that they lack imagination and miss the better story (Martel 64) in life. He later inquires of the men interviewing him, Which is the better story, the story with animals or the story without animals? (Martel 317) after recounting two versions of his 227 days at sea. The better story is the story which opens up the mind, the story which provides you with a new way of observing the world. Being able to see the better story is an act of interpretation and creation. It is how we view the world and generate meaning from it. In this case, the better story becomes your reality because it is what is real to you. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... You create it with your thoughts, feelings and beliefs (Brown 2010). • 8. Problem of Tyranny of the Majority Problem of Tyranny of the Majority Federalist papers were a series of essays written by Alexander Hamilton, John Jay and James Madison and were publish with the pen name Publius . They were first written to urge the citizens of New York City to support ratification of the proposed United States Constitution. This paper will analyze the problem of tyranny of the majority in both society and the government by using Madison s Federalist Papers No.10 and 51. It will also discuss how the republican government and separation of powers provide remedies. In Federalist Paper No.10, Madison defines factions as groups of people who have a common self interest. They would be different to the individual rights of other citizens because they were involved with their own benefits. He states that factions are inherent to human nature and citizens are no longer living under a state of liberty. Madison states, liberty is to faction what air is to fire , this means that with out liberty there cannot be any factions. By destroying the liberty, which is essential to its existence, the other, by giving to every citizen the same opinions, the same passions, and the same interests. The difference between those who have and those who don t would always be in existence, and is in fact one of the most common unavoidable cause of factions. Things like equality, fair pay, ADA approved reasonable accommodations should they be required, and being discriminated against, especially based on their gender. Problem Situation One of the most difficult things for someone to deal with within a work place is gender discrimination. • 13. The Effects Of Deceptive Pictures On Hong Kong 2.3.2. Deceptive Pictures According to Kim (2004), there are several instances that he has witnessed of the deceptive pictures presented in the websites of the online retail stores. The consumers correspondingly find a different product during the purchase of the product, which leads to extreme level of dissatisfaction from the customers end. Subsequently, the consumers find it difficult to purchase the product again from the same retail store. Lodorfos et al (2006) in this regard commented that the online retail organisations those have witnessed these sort of deceptive pictures in order to attract online consumers have ultimately not been able to retain the same. Similar instances are also notable among the consumers in Hong Kong, who are highly conscious regarding the quality aspects of a product. Therefore, it is eminent that deceptive pictures are regarded as one of the factors that restrict consumers in Hong Kong to purchase products through the online platform (Lodorfos et al, 2006). 2.3.3. Diminished Instant Satisfaction Mittal (2013) suggested that in online retail shopping the consumers receives the products after certain amount of time. • 16. Unmanned Aircraft Systems ( Uas ) Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) have become a quickly growing part of the aviation community over the last five to ten years. More and more of these aircraft are flying in the National Airspace System (NAS) with each passing year, without any set rules governing their operation. With the growing population of UAS in the NAS, for military, civil, and commercial use, the need for regulation is becoming increasingly obvious. How to regulate this type of aircraft is no simple task. Taking into consideration the many factors of these aircraft such as size, purpose, who is using them, and location of use, it is difficult to determine what regulation is required. That is the task that has been set before the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). To determine what type of regulation is needed to integrate and ensure the safe operation of UAS in the NAS since the skies that they share are shared with manned aircraft. Integration of UAS into the NAS Since the first flight of Orville and Wilbur Wright s aircraft at Kitty Hawk, the development of new aircraft types and technology in these and existing aircraft has moved along at a quick and steady pace. Moreover, since 1903, aircraft limits continually have been pushed and surpassed. Aircraft now fly higher, faster, farther and carry more cargo or passengers than ever before. Nevertheless, it would only seem logical the next step in aviation evolution is removal of the human factor in flight. Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 17. Analysis Of Woodrow Wilson s The Straw That Broke The... Following WW1, Europe was left in a bad state. Empires were destroyed and states were being formed. The Minority question that arose following the war, albeit important, was not as much of a destabilizing force in this time as people like to think. It was only the byproduct of events that took place. These events include the publishing of the fourteen points, the settlements made during the Paris Peace conference, and the creation of state constitutions. The minority question was, in essence, the straw that broke the camel s back, breaking the already damaged infrastructure of post war Europe. In order to answer the question on why minority rights became such a destabilizing force after the war, we must first look at what caused this problem to become the forefront of many European minds. Two pivotal events took place following the war that left stains on Europe; stains that, to some, indirectly led to the start of World War 2. The first and most important event was the publishing of Woodrow Wilson s fourteen points on January 8, 1918. These points were created in the hope to promote peace and harmony among the recently war stricken nations of Europe. One prominent point that came from this document was the idea of self determination. This encouraged people to form their own nation where they could choose rulers and live amongst others who share the same culture. This piqued the interest of the millions of people living in the various, and heavily ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They offer different possibilities for students, that other schools often cannot or do not have available. Prep schools have better facilities and higher success rates, and are therefore superior to public schools, despite what Holden experiences. A prep school is a school that offers a higher set of learning to its students, through various advantages. These schools are known for offering diverse academic programming led by teacher scholars, many of whom hold advanced degrees in their subject areas (The 50 Best Boarding Schools in the U.S). Holden Caulfield in the novel Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger attended prep school, and although he disliked it immensely, he still formed a close relationship with one teacher in particular. The War And Plato s Symposium, And The Man Discussed In two very different works we see two equally different portrayals of the same man; these differences are informed by the author s purpose, the genre of the work, and the effects of the depiction upon the rest of the specific work. These works are of course Thucydides , The History of the Peloponnesian War and Plato s Symposium, and the man discussed is the Athenian giant, Alcibiades of the Alcmaeonidae. The authors, of course, have their own aims and reasons for writing their works, Plato, writing an allegory on love likely to defend his teacher Socrates, and Thucydides, to inform on what he believes to be the most significant war in history. The genres of the works being philosophy and history respectively also affects the rhetoric of Alcibiades speech; as well as his greater portrayals in the works. It is important to note the differences in the depictions as they are significant not only to understanding the literary merit of the works, but also furthering the knowledge with respect to the author s motives and the state of higher opinion on a maverick of a man in the late 5th and early 4th Centuries BC in Athens. The first significant variance one must note between the author s works is the rhetoric and aims of the speeches Alcibiades makes in the two works. In Plato s Symposium all the major characters are at a dinner party and are giving speeches about eros, the Greek concept of love, and there is quite an awkward relationship squabble occurring between Socrates and ... In a free society such as the United States, peaceful resistance usually comes in the form of peaceful protests such as people marching in the streets or people staying put in a public area for symbolic reasons. Like Guterson s use of duality, the cartoon clearly contrasts the different social experiences between races by posing the same scenario. In both frames respectively, a White and African American child propose the same statement, I m goin out mom! . However, the difference between frames is the response by the assumed mother. The view pertaining to the white child dictates a simple answer, put on your jacket , whereas the African American view dictates the response in the first frame as well as measures to prevent the attention of authorities. Clearly, Sargent s use of text implies that the African American youth population experience a harsher life due to prejudice. This is demonstrated by just a fraction of the instructions the African American child is given, don t make any sudden moves and keep your mouth shut around police . This scenario of race and cultural difference is undeniably relatable to the American and Japanese populations of Snow Falling on Cedars . • 44. The Causes Of The Cultural Revolution Of China Revolution: the deconstruction phase in the circle of societal reconstruction. In most cases, the society rebuilds itself, improves, takes mistakes from the past, and makes sure to establish itself as something new, distancing itself from its past faults. However, that is not always the case. The cultural revolution of China, lasting from 1966 1976, was a revolution unlike many others; it resulted in the destruction of traditional Chinese culture, as well as the reshaping of the Chinese political mentality. Mao Zedong, the chairman of the Communist Party of China, was the chief instigator of the revolution. Much of his motivations stemmed from his poor relationships with other party leaders. This tension with the other members was caused by the Great Leap Forward, an attempt by Mao to increase agricultural and industrial production in China within a very short span of time. This resulted in the overworking of farmers, a famine with an estimated 40 million deaths, and a disgrace for Mao (Ramzy). Even his intended successor, Liu Shaoqi, who was groomed to perfection by Mao himself, turned his back on him after the disastrous attempt at reforming the agricultural industry. However, due to Mao s well placed use of propaganda, he managed to climb back to power, establish a loyal base, and spread his ideology across China. He believed the Communist Party to be corrupt and need to be cleansed of those poisoned by intellectualism. Liu Shaoqi, the newly elected president of China, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Containing 66 books, written by about 40 authors over the span of nearly 1,500 years, and as the most widely accepted true word of God, my mission seemed more of a chore than an adventure. My parents stressed the importance of reading both fiction and nonfiction since my birth. By ten months old I could identify and sound out every letter of the alphabet, and they were stunned when they noticed my friends could not. Books quickly consumed my childhood. I read everything, from The Magic Tree House to The Royal Diaries to nearly every Bluebonnet Book available. And when space on my bookshelf dwindled after the addition of classics like Heidi and David Copperfield, I adored animal encyclopedias and a children s dictionary. School was a breeze. I loved every minute of it: reading, learning, pleasing my parents and teachers with good grades, and making friends. As a zealous bookworm, my interests leaned more along the language arts, history, and music ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I am closer with my family, I have more friends, and I ve learned that my body can only take so much pressure before it will break. I know my limits now and how to push without exceeding. My health has improved and I find myself smiling more than I did before. I thank God for my life, for His sacrifice, and for the good and the bad in my life, because I wouldn t be the same without both. I thank Him for the written word, and most of all for His Word.
