Abstarct. This Paper Will Review And Discuss Michael Pollan’S
Abstarct
This paper will review and discuss Michael Pollan s The Omnivore s Dilemma, A Natural History of
Four Meals, which was named a New York Times best seller. Michael holds the prestigious title of the
John S. and James L. Knight Professor of Journalism at Berkeley, as well as being a contributor to the
New York Times Magazine. He also has the distinction of being named one of the one hundred most
influential people in the world by Time magazine. The author will discuss the book, its references to
the omnivores dilemma, but most importantly how the author views the content of the book. Which is

are fed a cocktail of antibiotics, corn, fat supplements, liquid vitamins and synthetic estrogen and

Very concerning, is what was witnessed on Michael s trip, how the diet of the cattle has been changed
from grass to corn solely for financial reasons. It is unfortunate that economics has OMNIVORE S

There is a prevalence of heart disease when there is too high a ratio of omega 6 to omega 3. This ratio
has increased from 1 to 1 to an alarming 10 to 1 in the contemporary diet of many Americans. Just as
concerning is the fact the cattle develop resistant strains of bacteria as a result of including corn in

Essay on Conflict, Disarray, and War in Democratic...
Recently, war has become a huge problem in many countries around the world. War is defined as a
violent mass conflict between two or more armed forces or actors in warfare. The Democratic
Republic of Congo (DRC), previously known as Zaire gained independence from Belgium in 1960
and immediately descended into a state of conflict and disarray. It is a vast country, covering territory
about the size of Western Europe and include a wide variety of geographic regions. However, the war
is ravaging the land in one of the most complex African conflicts. The Democratic Republic of Congo
is currently at war due to several reasons. Conflict prevention was meant to be an integral part of the
operation and was covered by the mandate. Thus, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although the impediments to peace are enormous, there are several observers who believe that the
peace process is effectively important in the country. Third, the positive effect of the war is that the
world now has the best chance for peace, security and development since the founding of the United
Nations. The current President Joseph Kabila has failed to deliver international reconciliation
(Peace).Unfortunately; violence continued until 2009. The DRCis fighting with Rwandan militias
fighting over power control and naturals resources. For example, in 1997 to 2003, there was still
violence and conflict between the two groups. According to the International Rescue Committee ,
5.4million people have been killed, and 3.4 million have left their homes. This war in the Congo is
due to negligence, and nonalignment of the country. Finally, some remarkable progress has been made
in consolidating the peace process, culminating in the imminent installation of the transitional
government and other institutions. 2. Analyze the specific actions that the leadership of the selected
country has taken, through the use of its foreign aid from donor nations and international lending
institutions, to relieve the severe problems caused by warfare. Foreign aid plays an important role in
the developing countries. War has caused famine, malnutrition, and high rate of mortality in the DRC.

Essay on The Devastating Effects of Overpopulation
The Devastating Effects of Overpopulation
Imagine living in a world where darkness reigns continually due to a dense cover of toxic air pollution
which blocks most sunlight. Starvation and death from the lack of energy resources is widespread and
the people who have not perished yet live packed together, in overcrowded communities surrounded
by waste and filth. This grotesque picture of future life on earth may seem far fetched but with the
continued rise in population and the abuse of our planet by billions, this scenario may be closer to
reality then previously thought.
The Earth will soon not be able to sustain life if the population continues to escalate. With the
constantly rising numbers of humans, vital resources ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a result of this, he predicts a drastic population decrease due to insufficient resources to sustain
human life in the near future (Daily 3).
There are two main contributors to overpopulation; a decrease in the death rate and a rise in life
expectancy. Professor of Microbiology, John B. Hall claims that if we value human culture and a high
standard of living in general, there is evident need for an end to further growth of the Earth s
population (Hall 67).
A study done by the National Center for Health Statistics Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
in 1995, reported that in the United States there is a continuing decease in death rates and an increase
in life expectancy from birth. The decrease in mortality is due to preventative technology and
treatments of major health problems such as cancer and heart disease. The mortality rate was
estimated to be at 503.9 per 100,000 deaths annually (Mortality 1). This analysis also found that at
birth the life expectancy was at a record high of 75.8 years (1).
The increase in the world s growth, due to the increasing life expectancy and lower death rate, are
signs of a society s overall level of affluence and quality of life. Some factors pointing toward this rise
in affluence are increased food supplies and distribution, better nutrition, improvements in medical
and public health technology (such as immunizations and

Cinematic Techniques In What Dreams May Come
Cinematic Technique Analysis
Can two tapestries made with similar thread, truly weave two different pictures? Surely if the broad
scope of each tapestry is conceived and developed with the same material interlaced throughout, the
end result will be similar. However, the tiny threads of difference woven amongst those similar strands
can result in one tapestry quite altered from the other. An example of this can be found in comparing
the film What Dreams May Come, directed by Vincent Ward, to Dante Alighieri s book The Inferno,
upon which it is based. The film follows Chris Nielsen as he searches Heaven and Hell for his lost
wife, just as Dante searched for his love in The Inferno. While the fibers of similarity look alike in this
book and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the film, Chris and Annie and their fates are the embodiment of good and evil. Despite these
oppositional forces, Ward shows that similarities exist as well. For example, multiple times throughout
the film they each wore blue. This color symbolizes peace, and even though both characters went
through very challenging trials, they were still able to find joy in the little moments. Additionally, at
different progression points of the film, Ward portrays times where Annie the embodiment of evil is a
help to Chris, and times where Chris the embodiment of good begins to succumb to the despair of evil.
Through this cinematic crossover, Ward creates the idea that there are times of good and evil in
everyone, rather than an undefiled superiority and distance of one from the other. Finally, there is the
cinematic urgency and dedication shown through Chris as he refuses to give up on finding and saving
Annie. This endurance eventually results in both Chris and Annie making it to Heaven, despite Annie
having committed suicide. Once there, Annie s appearance is changed, again through this use of
cinematic technique, conveying that rather than turning Chris to the darker side from seeking out a
sinner, Annie was instead turned to the side of good.

who lift weights and do cardiovascular exercises. The Ultra pills have been a big success. Part of
NutroBalance s strategic goals is to build off of that success by formulating the Ultra pills to target
other segments of the work out population. NutroBalance s board of directors has decided to invest in
a pill called UltraMAX geared toward women who also lift weights and do cardiovascular exercises.
Since the core of the product has already been produced, the project to introduce UltraMAX to the

Ultra does in men. You have been chosen to be the project manager of this weight loss drug study. The

Child Welfare In Canada Essay
It is the assumption of many that Canada is a nation free of racism. Canadians pride themselves on
being culturally diverse and accepting, and on having relatively progressive social policies such as that
of universal healthcare. However, there are many ways in which the current and historical policies
have expressed explicit racism that have left an already marginalized population with the crumbs of
society. A prime example of this can be demonstrated in the mass overrepresentation of Aboriginal
youth in care. By the year 2010, there were around twenty seven thousand Indigenous children in the
Canadian child welfare system who were living in some sort of out of home care (Chappell, 2014).
Although they represented only seven percent of the children in Canada, they made up 48 percent of
all children in foster care. (Yukselir Annett, 2016). This phenomenon is not a recent trend, as it has
been occurring since the very creation of modern child welfare in Canada as it is known, and it has its
roots deep in Canadian history. This paper will demonstrate a timeline of the events which have lead
to this phenomenon in Canada, specifically focusing on the province of Ontario. Important facts which
may have contributed to the overrepresentation of this population will be discussed, such as historical
methods of colonization in regards to child welfare including the implementation of the residential
school system and the Sixties Scoop. Policies that have also had a profound impact,

Once they do something great or if they are following certain instructions, they sometimes find it

Review Of The Fall Of Constantinople Essay
Jeffery Jacob World History [Teacher name here] December 21st, 2016 The Fall of Constantinople
Byzantium was one of the many Greek city states that stratled along the coasts of the Aegean Sea. As
an abundant source of Grains, fish, and trade, she played a pivotal role as a landing for Darius colossal
army against the Greeks; a battleground between Athens and Sparta during the Pelloponessian war;
and a prized tributary under Roman supervision. The Roman Emperor, Constantine I, renamed the city
after himself and the newly christened Constantinople grew to eclipse Rome as the greatest Capital of
Europe. Even after the continent was plunged into the so called Dark Ages ; protected by the
indominable Theodosian Wall, The Queen of Cities , as the Greek speaking Byzantines called her,
retained her position as the most prestine City of the early Middle Ages. And became the seat of power
for the great Basilieis, Greek plural for Emperors, and the venerated Patriarchs of the Eastern
Orthodox Church. Yet the middle ages made life more turbulant for the aged Byzantine Empire as it
lost vast swathes of land to the surging Muslim Caliphate; struggled with internal corruption
throughout its lifetime; clung desperately to its commercial power in the face of competition from
merchant republics such as Genoa and Venice; and embroiled itself into several centuries of conflicts
with the Turks over control of Anatolia, modern day Turkey. However, its Religious influence grew

place at a railroad station with no shade nor trees. The story was told in someone else s point of view
looking through a camera from the inside of the station. The short story uses symbolism comparing
the big white hills to elephants, the bamboo bead curtain, and the train station and the luggage. First,
the hills were a lovely view from a distance at the train station. The shape of the hills looked like big

Essay about The 2012 Dilemma and the Media
It hasn t been even ten years and here we are all over again. For some reason the human race can not
wait to be extinct, and we are already on track for another Y2K scare. Every time you turn on the
History Channel there is another new program telling us how the world as we know it will end in a
little more than two years, sending every viewer into a state of shock, and turning every Tivo into a
doomsday prediction recorder from then on out. Now, I am all about putting out as much information
about our everyday world out there for all to bear witness, but I also believe in unbiased coverage of
events. For some reason television channels, the internet, and even movies have been telling the public

The possible risks far outweigh the benefits in my eyes. 2012 also clashes with another idea, the idea
of virtue ethics. Now, these channels will cry out that they are merely educating the public about these
predictions (I use the term loosely) in order to allow the people to make the decision on their own. I
cry fowl play. The virtuous thing to do would to not only educate the public on the downs, but also the
ups, give both sides to the story, and make it a fair game. The History Channel is a well respected
station (I pick on them because they seem to have the most invested interest in 2012) that many people
get real factual updates, on , well history. For some reason the claim to be the future channel now, and
that is anything but virtuous. Unfortunately in this day and age, if any news reporter or television
show give the public any information on anything, it is automatically consumed as fact by assumption.
We all would like to believe, why would they lie to us , well there are many, many reasons why a
station would make false claims, report false news, and over exaggerate any claim made out there.
Why? Because nobody is held responsible. It boils down to this, just like any asshole on the internet
can post a blog hiding behind a computer screen, television can in essence be used the same way. Do
we really get to talk to the people behind Fox News, History Channel, or MSNBC face to face, person

Hegel s Views On Religion
Religion for Hegel was something that was discussed throughout some of his different writings, and
was something that he had strong views on. It can be argued that his view on religion in the state for
the citizens creates the most liberal society when comparing with that of Locke or Hobbes for those
who desire to practice their faith. He gives the choice to be involved in religion, or not, and shows
how religion can benefit the functioning of civil society.
Hegel s views on religion in the state cannot be sufficiently aligned with that of Hobbes or Locke, and
Hegel s views are very much his own. In a sense, he combines elements of both of these two writers,
and takes aspects that make it difficult to draw a final conclusion that his ideas are more like one than
the other. Hegel s views on religion in relation to politics greatly differ from that of Hobbes and
Locke, but he believes that religion can play a vital role in creating ethical political communities.
Practicing your faith can provide information on morals to live by, ad create a stronger society.
Hegel believed that Christianity is able to become a public religion that all citizens can become a part
of. He thinks this religion is important because it aligns itself closely with his views on the way of
living an ethical life, and he believed that you can only become ethical by having this religious
support and faith in something. Christianity can be argued to be a religion of Sittlichkeit. This religion

The Origin Of Transatlantic Accents In The English Language
Transatlantic accent had a strong resemblance to musical type of speaking compared to details that
accompany the world s many leading phonetics that come from a sustained form of education. The
fact that transatlantic accent was mainly spoken by the affluent people in the society, means that it
copied the phonetics that educated people used to speak and dropped the letter r form the words used
in the accent, especially from the British accents. In fact, transatlantic accent upon embracing the
culture of r less pronunciation was promoted as the correct and right international English. Schools of
acting, speech, and elocution adopted transatlantic accent and the r less pronunciation as a method and
taught it in the schools. Speech schools in the United States advanced the accent, thereby, attracting so
many people from the elite families to join acting, elocution, and speech schools in order to learn the
transatlantic accent (Jenny).
The official origin of transatlantic accent traces its roots in Australian phonetics. The accent was
popularized by the William Tilly who taught in Columbia University, who introduced the Australian
phonetic consistency in the United States. The professor introduced the consistency of Australian
phonetics using a conscious standard of American speech. The phonetic grew to define the American
classical accent that was eventually identified as transatlantic accent that started declining during the
Second World War. Transatlantic attracted

Dinosaur Dinosaurs: Extinct or Natural Causes
As geologic time goes, all the dinosaurs living on earth suddenly disappeared. How did these
dominated and gigantic creatures really die? Was it a slow extinction through natural causes, or did it
happen suddenly? These questions give rise to many different beliefs on how the dinosaurs
disappeared over sixty five million years ago. Something happened sixty five million years ago, at the
end of the Cretaceous period that was so devastating that it altered the course of life on earth.
Extinction is easily defined: the birth rate fails to keep up with the death rate. However, the definition
does not answer the question about the nature or causes of extinction. Since so many ... Show more

A massive eruption may have saturated the atmosphere with carbon dioxide so the that a sharp rise in
temperature occurred worldwide. The excessive carbon dioxide would have permitted solar energy to
enter the atmosphere but would have blocked the radiation of most surface heat back into space,
causing the greenhouse effect . rising temperatures could have killed off or reduced the activity of
plankton, disrupting food chains and also disrupting the plankton s normal role in converting carbon
dioxide to oxygen through photosynthesis. It would have taken long for dinosaurs to become extinct.
Dinosaurs may have also killed themselves. It is possible that they consumed poison from plants. The
emergence of flowering plants could have poisoned them. These plants contained alkaloids. Smaller
animals with lesser appetites could have survived the doses, but perhaps the dinosaur could not. Most
mammals are smart enough to avoid these poison ness plants because of the bitter taste. The
dinosaurs, however, may have not had the sense or the liver. They could not taste the bitterness or
detoxify the ingested substances. This theory is not scientifically significant because there is no way
of telling if the dinosaurs could taste, or how their digestive system worked.

The Debate Over Abortion Essay
With the ongoing debate and the advancement of technology in determining the viability of a fetus,
abortion, the ending of a pregnancy by removing a fertilized egg, has become increasingly
controversial. The morality of abortion has caused many to separate into opposite sides of the
spectrum, pro life and pro choice. The arguments over abortion has stirred a continuous debate
between a pro choice stance such as that presented by the analogical reasoning of Thomson or Glover
s examination of social context and a pro life position argued by a moral view of personhood by
Noonan. The ethical arguments presented by the conflicting views in the abortion debate has caused
others to taken into consideration a sociological account visible in ... Show more content on

Thomson concludes that it does not matter whether or not a fetus is a person because even if a fetus is
granted a right to life, it is not accurate to assume that abortion is murder (2, Thomson, CC p.192).
Murder is an intentional act that is unjustified while abortion is not direct killing but results in the
death of the fetus. For instance, in cases involving rape or other conditions of unintended pregnancies,
a woman undergoing abortion is not necessarily committing murder since she was not responsible for
an unwanted pregnancy. Therefore, in no case should the personhood of the fetus determine the
morality of abortion. Thomson suggests that having a right to life does not grant the right to use
another person s body (3, Thomson, CC p.191). In other words, the fetus s right to life does not apply
to any moral obligation of the mother s body. Abortion is justifiable because there is no obligation on
part of the women for an unwanted pregnancy. In the case of the sick violinist, the kidnapped person is
not morally obligated to make sacrifices and save the life of the violinist. Since the violinist has no
right to use another person s body, it would not be considered murder or a violation of the violinist s
rights if the kidnapped person was to refuse and pull the plug. On the other hand, John Noonan

UBI To Combat Economic Inequality
The dominant in group of men have subjected women to a minority out group. This separation has
caused unequal treatment, double standards, and stereotypes, which all help keep women in a state of
economic inequality. In order for women to experience equality, men most lose some of their power
and share it with women. Although, many men would love women to have more economic freedom,
they do not want it to come at the cost of their power. Therefore, inter group conflict occurs. Another
in group and intergroup dynamic, which is taking place, is between the rich and the poor. A Pew

The Legend Of Faust Research Paper
To begin, Faust is a fictional scholar in literature who sells his soul to the Devil. The legend is loosely
based on an actual magician who lived in northern Germany during the fifteenth century. Faust was
once idealistic, but now disillusioned and bitter with despair. He foresakes God and makes a perilous
deal with the Devil in which he commits his soul to eternal damnation in return for power and
knowledge in this life (The legend of Faust from the Renaissance times, 2016). Faust has studied for
years without pleasing progress and loses his faith in his idealism. In his frustration, Faust becomes a
black magic sorcerer and beckons the Devil. The demon he summons is named Mephistopheles.
Together they make a pact in which the devil offers to serve Faust for a period of time, in return for his
soul and damnation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Background Information
1. Outline the major symptoms of the disorder discussed in the case. The major symptoms of Attention
Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are problems with attention; in this area the child seems to
ignore detail, they are easily distracted, and they are unable to complete tasks. The next symptom is
hyperactive behavior; in this area the child is restless and unable to sit quietly. The third area or
symptom is called excessive impulsivity, in this stage ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
ADHD symptoms usually appear early in life, often between the ages of 3 and 6 (NIMH, 2006, pp. 5).
Some factors that contribute to predisposition of ADHD can be attributed to cultural factors (both
psychological and biological), inherited factors, or genetic factors. Researchers are really focused on
the gene factor that can make the person more likely to have ADHD (Faraone, S.V., Perlis, R.H.,
Doyle, A.E., Smoller, J.W., Goralnick, J.J, Holmgren, M.A., Sklar, P., 2005, Khan, S.A., Faraone, S.V.,
2006) . Studies also look into how a preschooler can possibly have ADHD by being exposed to lead in
plumbing at a high level or from the painting in old buildings (NIMH, 2006, pp. 4).
Observations
1. Describe symptoms that you observed that support the diagnosis of the individual. During the
interview, David showed signs of hyperactivity. He was fidgeting and caused the interviewers to
become nervous around him. David can be seen doing flips over and over again on his trampoline,
which shows us just how hyperactive he really is. David is unable to focus for more than a few
minutes and his peers ostracize him for his hyperactivity. He also distracts himself with little noises
and talks to himself as well as daydreams, which shows disruptive behavior. David has a difficult time
studying and says the words jump around on the page. He also has difficulty in expressing good
judgment and gets very excitable

The Reaction Of Polymerase Chain Reaction
Polymerase Chain Reaction:
Polymerase chain reaction, also known as PCR, a technology that has made a tremendous impact on
researchers, and has also affected many aspects of our everyday lives. The introduction of
recombinant DNA technology has revolutionized the study of life as a tool for the biological sciences.
Molecular cloning allowed the study of individual genes of living organisms; however there was
dependence of obtaining a relatively large quantity of pure DNA. Scientists found it extremely
difficult to get a specific DNA in quantity from the mass of genes present in a biological sample. A
technique that amplifies DNA through a simple enzymatic reaction, was developed by Karry Mullis at
that time which enabled scientists to make millions or even billions of copies of a DNA molecule in a
very short time. PCR is a quick, less expensive and a very simple way of copying a specific DNA
fragments from minute quantities of source DNA material, even if the source DNA is of relatively
poor quality.
Reasons for the amplification of DNA.
1) To create multiple copies of a portion of DNA which is very rare. For example a forensic scientist
may need to amplify a small fragment of DNA from a crime scene or a parenting test.
2) To compare two different samples of DNA to know which one is more abundant. Because DNA is
microscopic so we cannot visualize it in a tube. However, if we amplify both samples at the same rate,
we can calculate which sample was more to begin with by

Optimism In The Novel Candide By Voltaire
The novel, Candide by Voltaire, is about Candide who grows up in the home of Baron Thunder ten
tronckh in the German province of Westphalia. His tutor, Pangloss, teaches him that their world is the
best of all possible worlds, and everything that transpires in this world is for the best. Candide accepts
Pangloss s teachings as absolute truth. Pangloss optimism can be considered as exaggerated and blind.
Optimism is defined as a disposition or tendency to look on the more favorable side of events or
conditions and to expect the most favorable outcome; the belief that good ultimately predominates
over evil in the world; the belief that goodness pervades reality; and the doctrine that the existing
world is the best of all possible worlds. Throughout the story, Pangloss encounters suffering that
contradicts his beliefs that this is the best possible world to live in. His struggle and suffering make us
think that Voltaire was creating a satire of the beliefs of the time. With this era of time being known as
the Age of Enlightenment, one might think that the intention of Voltaire was to represent extreme
optimism in an era where you were supposed to think with rational and reason. ... Show more content

Essay about Isolation in Winesburg Ohio and Death in The...
Isolation in Winesburg Ohio and Death in The Woods
In 1919, Sherwood Anderson composed his work Winesburg Ohio, which depicts the inner lives of
small town America. Anderson s fascination to explore what s beneath the surface of human lives
results in another story in 1933 called Death In The Woods . These two works, incidentally, share a
common theme of isolation. The characters in these works, are portrayed as grotesques or people who
live their lives by one truth, thus living a life of falsehood and isolation from the rest of the world.
This essay will examine the theme of isolation in the two works described, and will also relate it to
Anderson s idea of the grotesque .
In Winesburg Ohio, the reader is first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These short stories are linked through the character of George Willard, who is essentially the main
character. Because of this, Winesburg is considered a Bildungsroman, the character development of
George the artist to George the man . His development occurs through his contact and dealing with the
characters in the stories. Each character offers something new in his development, as in advice or
wisdom. These grotesques rely on George to take notice of their isolation and falsehood, in hopes of
George publishing their truths : Each in turn comes forward to offer his secret (the material of art)
And to give up whatever fragmentary wisdom he may possess Toward the development of the artist
who will be the spokesman. For everyone. (Fussell, p.111). So, it is through these encounters with
George that the reader is introduced to the strong sense of isolation and underdevelopment the
characters possess.
The first example, is in the story Hands . Here, the character of Wing Biddlbaum is introduced, and
right from the start, appears to have isolated himself from the rest of society. Among all the people of
Winesburg but one had come close to him. (p.27). This one person, is of course George Willard, who
is portrayed in this first story as a friend of Wing Biddlbaum. George is someone he can talk to, break
free temporarily of his isolation. In addition to talking openly with George enthusiastically, he also
was very expressive and active

Persuasive Essay On Body Cameras
There is an argument that police officers are getting out of hand with handling arrest. The most recent
solution to the problem is having every policeman have a body camera, in order to make the police
officer feel as if their every movement is being watched. Recently, there has been discussion if police
officers using body cameras is a Liberty Issues and that it gives the police force way too much
unchecked power. Some citizens believe that body cameras leads into privacy issues (4th
Amendment), violation of civil rights (1st Amendment), and may give too much power to the
government (Limited Government via James Madison).
Body cameras come in all shapes and sizes. There are many commercial businesses in the United
States that already use body cameras for private industry work. According to Jay Stanley a body

There are a lot of pro and cons when looking at body cameras through a Privacy Issue lens. According
to the study of PhD Barak Ariel, a professor at Hebrew University s Institute of Criminology, If body
worn cameras become common practice, it means more electronic surveillance, more digitized tagging

Willy Loman Hallucinations
Literature has often been used to explain problems within society. This can be seen in Arthur Miller s
play Death of a Salesman. Arthur Miller s play was set in the late 1940 s in a post World War II
economy. Willy and Linda Loman and their two sons: Biff and Happy, live in Brooklyn, New York
and are the main characters. Death of a Salesman discusses the life of Willy and the struggles he goes
through everyday. Willy Loman is a suicidal man, whom searches for reasoning within the world. In
Arthur Miller s play Willy Loman often has hallucinations about life when he was a young man.
Along with his hallucinations, Willy is very paranoid, constantly feeling that life is very unfair and
that someone is out to get him. Some see these symptoms and believe that Willy has a mental disorder.
Within this time period mental illness was not to be spoken about or acknowledged. Due to the
hallucinations, the voices within Willy s head, and his suicidal thoughts one may see Willy Loman as a
schizophrenic. Many people whom have schizophrenia have hallucinations. A hallucination is when

Dear Ms. Stewart,

Omnimedia (MSO). Perhaps the one issue that you are grappling with at present is about the Imclone
scandal. You have been accused of selling $227,000 worth of Imclone stock based on inside
information. Because of these charges of insider trading, your critics have summarily associated you
with other disgraced company directors: Kenneth Lay of Enron and Bernard Ebbers of WorldCom.

However, it is perhaps not entirely right to say that your actions, or what you have been accused of,
have nothing to do with MSO. Joan Didion, in her essay Everywoman.com, suggests how your
reputation is integral to MSO, and she quotes from MSO s 1999 prospectus: Our (MSO s) business
would be adversely affected if Martha Stewart s public image or reputation were to be tarnished (146).
Indeed, a New York Times article by Constance L. Hays, dated 1 May 2003, reports that MSO s total
revenue fell 14.6 percent in the first quarter and that the share price, battered after Ms. Stewart s name
surfaced in connection with the ImClone insider trading investigation last summer, fell another 11.3
percent. One could argue that MSO s poor performance is necessarily due to the difficult state of the
economy at present, but according to MSO s accounts, your company was in fact posting growing
revenue figures until you were implicated in the Imclone scandal. So as you can see, your public
image is closely intertwined with the survival and prosperity of MSO. Your actions do indeed affect
your stakeholders.

subversive. That s communist. So tonight, you have to kill them. Don Lazaro, the mayor of the war
torn village, San Martin Comitan, seems to have no choice but to carry out this heartless command.
His response is indicative of a desperate man searching for answers, yet already resigned to carrying
out the task at hand. What can I say? you tell me! cries an anguished Don Lazaro to the villagers. Is he

The feeling of fear and sadness is further portrayed by the crying of the village women, . . . a woman s
anguish pierced the still, early morning, followed by yet a duet of wails, and then a full chorus of
cries. Clearly, these women intuitively or otherwise , know of wrenching torment awaiting the village.
The somber mood continues with the procession of religious officials making their way to the same
destination as the wailing women. In contrast, however, the religious principales have assumed a
formation of some sort; marching in six files, two abreast, ceremoniously fulfilling their obligation as
if all hope had already eroded.
That hope further dissipated when the young men, now being led each by an older man, made their
way to the cemetery. The cemetery was an eery prediction of what was surely now about to happen.
Don Lazaro has protested so much that there is nothing he can do, it now borders on the pathetic. Does
he know of some additional harm that would befall him if he doesn t carry out this sinister plan? The
young men, now willing to sacrifice their lives, and resigned to doing so, bravely meet their fate. The
five young men, each escorted now by an older man, followed the cofrades over the ridge of the hill
and dropped down on the other side just out of sight. Certainly the reader can see that, with the
movement of the young men out of sight, the terrible command is surely about to be carried out. Still
there may be time to

Persuasive Speech On Homework
Being a kid is not easy, trying to juggle sports, school, and a social life is stressful and time
consuming. We have lives outside of the classroom and keeping track of our work is very difficult, but
there are ways to help keep the two balanced. Here are some helpful ways to keep your school life
managed and still have a productive lifestyle. I ve been in school for a little while now and one of the
things I dreaded the most was the teacher saying Your homework for tonight is... Hearing those words
just ruined my mood. However, homework may not be the most enjoyable thing in the world it is
important. It s 10% of your grade but also allows to practice more on what you re learning. Once you
get home, homework should be the first thing on your mind so you can just get it out of the way.
When working on homework you should definitely turn off all electronic devices so it won t get in the
way of you focusing. Another thing that could be distracting is family. As much fun as family might
be, having someone there when you re trying to do classwork could get you really off topic. I have a

about a test before? Well guess what, you re not alone. Test and exams are so stressful and sometimes
they could either make or break your grade. Having that kind of pressure put on you doesn t feel good

It began in the ?70s with funky beats resonating at house parties, at basement parties, and the streets of
New York (Fernando, 1994.)
In the early ?70s, a Jamaican d.j. known as Kool Herc moved from Kingston to NY?s West Bronx. He
attempted to incorporate his Jamaican style of dj, which involved reciting improvised rhymes over the
dub versions of his reggae records. Unfortunately New Yorkers were not into reggae at this time.
Because of this, he adapted his style by chanting over instrumental percussion sections of the day?s
popular songs. Since these breaks were relatively short, he learned to extend them indefinitely by
using an audio mixer and two identical records in which he continuously replaced the desires segment.
In those early days, young partygoers initially recited popular phrases and used the slang of the day.
This would usually evoke a response from the crowd, who began to call out their own names and
slogans. As this culture evolved, the party shouts became more elaborate as the dj, in an effort to be
different, began to incorporate little rhymes. It was not long before people began drawing upon
outdated dozens and schoolyard rhymes. Many would add their own twist and customize these rhymes
to make them suitable for the party environment (George, 1998).
At that time it was not yet known as ?rap? but called emceeing. As the interest in rap music grew, so
did its message. Rap caught on because

Cost to build a new semiconductor fab has gone up from $200 million in 1985 to $3 Billion in 2004.
Incumbent companies have capabilities to design newer generations of semiconductors with greater
amounts of memory and processing abilities that make older generations obsolete. Older generations
tend to drop half their amount in price one year after a new model is reduced (exhibit 6). The United

The business level strategy of Samsung s memory chip business unit is an integrated strategy.
Remarkably, they have both a cost advantage and a value advantage over their competitors. In this
section we will describe how Samsung widens the wedge through cost and value drivers. The data
presented in Appendix 1 shows that Samsung s cost advantage accounts for majority of their
competitive advantage.
Value drivers: quality/reliability; large product mix including frontier products; customization; HR
Policies; and employees.
Cost drivers: economies of scale; learning and experience curve; product design; and single
production Site.
Learning and experience Curve: Between 1983 and 1985, Samsung allocated more than $100 million
in into DRAM technology, even paying another firm to teach them how to produce 64k DRAMs. As
the market grew, firms tried to catch up to where Samsung already had a foothold. To further make
advancements efficiently, Samsung has had separate R amp;D groups compete within their company
to come up with the same solution.
Product Design: The chairman chose a stacking design that proved be advantageous over companies
that chose a trenching design. A core design was also used for their customized products.
Economies of scale: Samsung invested $1 billion dollars to create a production process that made a 12
inch wafer. A larger wafer meant more chips could be cut at the same time. See A2
Single production Site: It is estimated that this saved

Viability of Non-Nuclear Deterrence Strategies
Near the end of World War II, the United States (U.S.) atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
demonstrated that nuclear weapons can technically be used as a strategic imperative [1]. Nuclear
capability, thereafter, was much sought after by states as the basis for deterrence and thus fuelled the
nuclear arms race during the Cold War, especially between the U.S. and the Soviet Union [2].
However, several literatures [3] [4] [5] have debated that nuclear deterrence and utilisation of nuclear
weapons are morally and ethically unacceptable. Several others [6] [7] argued that nuclear capability
is not the be all and end all of deterrence. In addition, the existence of Nuclear Non proliferation
Treaty (NPT) measures, theoretically, makes it difficult for non nuclear states to acquire the
capabilities to produce nuclear weapons and to do so without being detected [8]. Hence, this essay
seeks to examine the viability of non nuclear deterrence strategies, particularly to address the question
Who are the potential adversaries of non nuclear states and what are the deterrence strategies that are
viable?
Setting the Context
The potential adversaries that non nuclear states may face will be generalised into three types for the
purpose of this discussion. These are nuclear state actors, non nuclear state actors, and non state actors
(NSAs). Nuclear state actors includes the five nuclear weapon states under the NPT, as well as the
three non NPT and one undeclared nuclear powers [9].

Symbolism In Big Two Hearted River By Hemingway
Ernest Hemingway became one of the most notorious writers in the 20th century, likely due to his
abnormal style of writing. Hemingway in his writing introduced the new concept of Iceberg Theory
which gives the story a implicit meaning made by the author that should be further inferred by the
reader. In order to achieve this style Hemingway throughout his works used objects and movements
by characters to symbolize emotion, actions and other deeper objects. Many of Hemingway s symbols
reoccur among different stories; one of his most recurring symbols is a train/tracks which is used in
following Big Two Hearted River , Canary ,and Hills like White Elephants . In the first story Big Two

upcoming journey of being divorce and without each other. The final use of the train symbol is in Hills
like White Elephants . He looked up the tracks but could not see the train This short read takes place at
a train station with a couple the girl and the man argue about a topic.Near the end they made an
agreement, the man then goes around and looks up the tracks; the tracks and train then symbolize the
new start to the agreement . In these three stories written by Hemingway a train symbolizes all styles
of new journey that occur in

How Did Joseph Bruce Ismay Survive The Titanic
The unsinkable Titanic took an unexpected turn on its voyage and left few survivors to tell about it.
The Titanic was said to be very high quality, but the crew proved themselves wrong soon after the
voyage set off. One passenger, Mr. Joseph Bruce Ismay, was on the ship when the tragedy took place.
Did he survive? With much carelessness, the crew of the Titanic ignored all warning messages due to
confidence in the ship; consequently, they were not so confident when they found themselves rushing
to passengers rescue. One passage, R.M.S. Titanic, by Hanson W. Baldwin, tells about the sequence of
unfortunate events. The ship took 3 years to build and with much careful construction, many thought
that the ship was, in fact, unsinkable. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

recruited to go to work at White Star Line s office for a further year; he was appointed the company s
agent at the end of that year. Ismay accompanied many ships on their voyages and the Titanic was no
exception. On April 10, 1912, he boarded the Titanic with his valet, his secretary, and was also
assisted by Ernest Freeman who unlike the other employees was listed as a crew member. He survived
the sinking of the Titanic; Ismay was rescued from the Titanic in Collapsible C. Why did Ismay

It is a vast country, covering territory about the size of Western Europe and include a wide variety of geographic regions. Essay on The Devastating Effects of Overpopulation The Devastating Effects of Overpopulation Imagine living in a world where darkness reigns continually due to a dense cover of toxic air pollution which blocks most sunlight. Starvation and death from the lack of energy resources is widespread and the people who have not perished yet live packed together, in overcrowded communities surrounded by waste and filth. This grotesque picture of future life on earth may seem far fetched but with the continued rise in population and the abuse of our planet by billions, this scenario may be closer to reality then previously thought. As a result of this, he predicts a drastic population decrease due to insufficient resources to sustain human life in the near future (Daily 3). There are two main contributors to overpopulation; a decrease in the death rate and a rise in life expectancy. Professor of Microbiology, John B. Hall claims that if we value human culture and a high standard of living in general, there is evident need for an end to further growth of the Earth s population (Hall 67). A study done by the National Center for Health Statistics Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 1995, reported that in the United States there is a continuing decease in death rates and an increase in life expectancy from birth. The decrease in mortality is due to preventative technology and treatments of major health problems such as cancer and heart disease. The mortality rate was estimated to be at 503.9 per 100,000 deaths annually (Mortality 1). This analysis also found that at birth the life expectancy was at a record high of 75.8 years (1). The increase in the world s growth, due to the increasing life expectancy and lower death rate, are signs of a society s overall level of affluence and quality of life. Some factors pointing toward this rise in affluence are increased food supplies and distribution, better nutrition, improvements in medical and public health technology (such as immunizations and ... Surely if the broad scope of each tapestry is conceived and developed with the same material interlaced throughout, the end result will be similar. However, the tiny threads of difference woven amongst those similar strands can result in one tapestry quite altered from the other. An example of this can be found in comparing the film What Dreams May Come, directed by Vincent Ward, to Dante Alighieri s book The Inferno, upon which it is based. The film follows Chris Nielsen as he searches Heaven and Hell for his lost wife, just as Dante searched for his love in The Inferno. While the fibers of similarity look alike in this book and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the film, Chris and Annie and their fates are the embodiment of good and evil. Despite these oppositional forces, Ward shows that similarities exist as well. For example, multiple times throughout the film they each wore blue. This color symbolizes peace, and even though both characters went through very challenging trials, they were still able to find joy in the little moments. Additionally, at different progression points of the film, Ward portrays times where Annie the embodiment of evil is a help to Chris, and times where Chris the embodiment of good begins to succumb to the despair of evil. Through this cinematic crossover, Ward creates the idea that there are times of good and evil in everyone, rather than an undefiled superiority and distance of one from the other. Finally, there is the cinematic urgency and dedication shown through Chris as he refuses to give up on finding and saving Annie. This endurance eventually results in both Chris and Annie making it to Heaven, despite Annie having committed suicide. Once there, Annie s appearance is changed, again through this use of cinematic technique, conveying that rather than turning Chris to the darker side from seeking out a sinner, Annie was instead turned to the side of good. ... • 8. Child Welfare In Canada Essay It is the assumption of many that Canada is a nation free of racism. Canadians pride themselves on being culturally diverse and accepting, and on having relatively progressive social policies such as that of universal healthcare. However, there are many ways in which the current and historical policies have expressed explicit racism that have left an already marginalized population with the crumbs of society. A prime example of this can be demonstrated in the mass overrepresentation of Aboriginal youth in care. By the year 2010, there were around twenty seven thousand Indigenous children in the Canadian child welfare system who were living in some sort of out of home care (Chappell, 2014). Although they represented only seven percent of the children in Canada, they made up 48 percent of all children in foster care. (Yukselir Annett, 2016). This phenomenon is not a recent trend, as it has been occurring since the very creation of modern child welfare in Canada as it is known, and it has its roots deep in Canadian history. This paper will demonstrate a timeline of the events which have lead to this phenomenon in Canada, specifically focusing on the province of Ontario. Important facts which may have contributed to the overrepresentation of this population will be discussed, such as historical methods of colonization in regards to child welfare including the implementation of the residential school system and the Sixties Scoop. Review Of The Fall Of Constantinople Essay Jeffery Jacob World History [Teacher name here] December 21st, 2016 The Fall of Constantinople Byzantium was one of the many Greek city states that stratled along the coasts of the Aegean Sea. As an abundant source of Grains, fish, and trade, she played a pivotal role as a landing for Darius colossal army against the Greeks; a battleground between Athens and Sparta during the Pelloponessian war; and a prized tributary under Roman supervision. The Roman Emperor, Constantine I, renamed the city after himself and the newly christened Constantinople grew to eclipse Rome as the greatest Capital of Europe. Even after the continent was plunged into the so called Dark Ages ; protected by the indominable Theodosian Wall, The Queen of Cities , as the Greek speaking Byzantines called her, retained her position as the most prestine City of the early Middle Ages. And became the seat of power for the great Basilieis, Greek plural for Emperors, and the venerated Patriarchs of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Yet the middle ages made life more turbulant for the aged Byzantine Empire as it lost vast swathes of land to the surging Muslim Caliphate; struggled with internal corruption throughout its lifetime; clung desperately to its commercial power in the face of competition from merchant republics such as Genoa and Venice; and embroiled itself into several centuries of conflicts with the Turks over control of Anatolia, modern day Turkey. I cry fowl play. The virtuous thing to do would to not only educate the public on the downs, but also the ups, give both sides to the story, and make it a fair game. The History Channel is a well respected station (I pick on them because they seem to have the most invested interest in 2012) that many people get real factual updates, on , well history. It can be argued that his view on religion in the state for the citizens creates the most liberal society when comparing with that of Locke or Hobbes for those who desire to practice their faith. He gives the choice to be involved in religion, or not, and shows how religion can benefit the functioning of civil society. Hegel s views on religion in the state cannot be sufficiently aligned with that of Hobbes or Locke, and Hegel s views are very much his own. In a sense, he combines elements of both of these two writers, and takes aspects that make it difficult to draw a final conclusion that his ideas are more like one than the other. Hegel s views on religion in relation to politics greatly differ from that of Hobbes and Locke, but he believes that religion can play a vital role in creating ethical political communities. Practicing your faith can provide information on morals to live by, ad create a stronger society. Hegel believed that Christianity is able to become a public religion that all citizens can become a part of. He thinks this religion is important because it aligns itself closely with his views on the way of living an ethical life, and he believed that you can only become ethical by having this religious support and faith in something. The morality of abortion has caused many to separate into opposite sides of the spectrum, pro life and pro choice. The arguments over abortion has stirred a continuous debate between a pro choice stance such as that presented by the analogical reasoning of Thomson or Glover s examination of social context and a pro life position argued by a moral view of personhood by Noonan. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thomson concludes that it does not matter whether or not a fetus is a person because even if a fetus is granted a right to life, it is not accurate to assume that abortion is murder (2, Thomson, CC p.192). Murder is an intentional act that is unjustified while abortion is not direct killing but results in the death of the fetus. For instance, in cases involving rape or other conditions of unintended pregnancies, a woman undergoing abortion is not necessarily committing murder since she was not responsible for an unwanted pregnancy. Therefore, in no case should the personhood of the fetus determine the morality of abortion. Thomson suggests that having a right to life does not grant the right to use another person s body (3, Thomson, CC p.191). In other words, the fetus s right to life does not apply to any moral obligation of the mother s body. Abortion is justifiable because there is no obligation on part of the women for an unwanted pregnancy. In the case of the sick violinist, the kidnapped person is not morally obligated to make sacrifices and save the life of the violinist. Since the violinist has no right to use another person s body, it would not be considered murder or a violation of the violinist s rights if the kidnapped person was to refuse and pull the plug. The Reaction Of Polymerase Chain Reaction Polymerase Chain Reaction: Polymerase chain reaction, also known as PCR, a technology that has made a tremendous impact on researchers, and has also affected many aspects of our everyday lives. The introduction of recombinant DNA technology has revolutionized the study of life as a tool for the biological sciences. Molecular cloning allowed the study of individual genes of living organisms; however there was dependence of obtaining a relatively large quantity of pure DNA. Scientists found it extremely difficult to get a specific DNA in quantity from the mass of genes present in a biological sample. A technique that amplifies DNA through a simple enzymatic reaction, was developed by Karry Mullis at that time which enabled scientists to make millions or even billions of copies of a DNA molecule in a very short time. PCR is a quick, less expensive and a very simple way of copying a specific DNA fragments from minute quantities of source DNA material, even if the source DNA is of relatively poor quality. Reasons for the amplification of DNA. 1) To create multiple copies of a portion of DNA which is very rare. For example a forensic scientist may need to amplify a small fragment of DNA from a crime scene or a parenting test. 2) To compare two different samples of DNA to know which one is more abundant. These grotesques rely on George to take notice of their isolation and falsehood, in hopes of George publishing their truths : Each in turn comes forward to offer his secret (the material of art) And to give up whatever fragmentary wisdom he may possess Toward the development of the artist who will be the spokesman. For everyone. (Fussell, p.111). So, it is through these encounters with George that the reader is introduced to the strong sense of isolation and underdevelopment the characters possess. The first example, is in the story Hands . Here, the character of Wing Biddlbaum is introduced, and right from the start, appears to have isolated himself from the rest of society. Among all the people of Winesburg but one had come close to him. (p.27). This one person, is of course George Willard, who is portrayed in this first story as a friend of Wing Biddlbaum. George is someone he can talk to, break free temporarily of his isolation. In addition to talking openly with George enthusiastically, he also was very expressive and active ... Memo to Martha Stewart, CEO of Martha Stewart Omnimedia Dear Ms. Stewart, I am writing to address some concerns I have about the future of your company, Martha Stewart Omnimedia (MSO). Perhaps the one issue that you are grappling with at present is about the Imclone scandal. You have been accused of selling $227,000 worth of Imclone stock based on inside information. Because of these charges of insider trading, your critics have summarily associated you with other disgraced company directors: Kenneth Lay of Enron and Bernard Ebbers of WorldCom. Joan Didion, in her essay Everywoman.com, suggests how your reputation is integral to MSO, and she quotes from MSO s 1999 prospectus: Our (MSO s) business would be adversely affected if Martha Stewart s public image or reputation were to be tarnished (146). Indeed, a New York Times article by Constance L. One could argue that MSO s poor performance is necessarily due to the difficult state of the economy at present, but according to MSO s accounts, your company was in fact posting growing revenue figures until you were implicated in the Imclone scandal. The conflict is immediately apparent : Don Lazaro, you ve got five boys in Comitan teaching the campesinos how to read. That s subversive. That s communist. So tonight, you have to kill them. Don Lazaro, the mayor of the war torn village, San Martin Comitan, seems to have no choice but to carry out this heartless command. The somber mood continues with the procession of religious officials making their way to the same destination as the wailing women. In contrast, however, the religious principales have assumed a formation of some sort; marching in six files, two abreast, ceremoniously fulfilling their obligation as if all hope had already eroded. That hope further dissipated when the young men, now being led each by an older man, made their way to the cemetery. The cemetery was an eery prediction of what was surely now about to happen. Don Lazaro has protested so much that there is nothing he can do, it now borders on the pathetic. Does he know of some additional harm that would befall him if he doesn t carry out this sinister plan? The young men, now willing to sacrifice their lives, and resigned to doing so, bravely meet their fate. The five young men, each escorted now by an older man, followed the cofrades over the ridge of the hill and dropped down on the other side just out of sight. Viability of Non-Nuclear Deterrence Strategies Near the end of World War II, the United States (U.S.) atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki demonstrated that nuclear weapons can technically be used as a strategic imperative [1]. Nuclear capability, thereafter, was much sought after by states as the basis for deterrence and thus fuelled the nuclear arms race during the Cold War, especially between the U.S. and the Soviet Union [2]. However, several literatures [3] [4] [5] have debated that nuclear deterrence and utilisation of nuclear weapons are morally and ethically unacceptable. Several others [6] [7] argued that nuclear capability is not the be all and end all of deterrence. In addition, the existence of Nuclear Non proliferation Treaty (NPT) measures, theoretically, makes it difficult for non nuclear states to acquire the capabilities to produce nuclear weapons and to do so without being detected [8]. Hence, this essay seeks to examine the viability of non nuclear deterrence strategies, particularly to address the question Who are the potential adversaries of non nuclear states and what are the deterrence strategies that are viable? Setting the Context The potential adversaries that non nuclear states may face will be generalised into three types for the purpose of this discussion.
