Criminal Evidence Analysis
Long again before DNA was founded detectives relied on their own instincts, witnesses, and suspect
confession to solve a crime. The past decade has seen great advances in a powerful criminal justice
tool: deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA. DNA can be used to identify criminals with incredible accuracy
when biological evidence exists. By the same token, DNA can be used to clear suspects and exonerate
persons mistakenly accused or convicted of crimes. In all, DNA technology is increasingly vital to
ensuring accuracy and fairness in the criminal justice system (justice.gov,2014). In today s world of
crimes nothing has been founded more reliable in court than a DNA evidence. Evidence can include

Some evidence needs to breath or dry (for example, blood or semen stains), and a paper container will
be needed for that evidence . Each item of evidence must be packaged and preserved separately, so as
not to contaminate or confuse.Evidence should never be mixed (Buckles,2007). If a CSI is assigned to
collect a wet bloodstained clothing from an assault victim who suffered facial lacerations and minor
stab wounds to the torso, the photographs should be taken pictures of the scene before collecting
evidence. First, to collect the wet bloodstained clothing it important to place each item in a clean
unused paper, or plastic bag. Moreover, clothing bloodstain should be packaged in a paper bag or
plastic bag to avoid contamination of other items. In addition, transport the package to a secured lab as
soon as possible where the items need to be taken out of the bag to thoroughly air dry and examine. If
a CIS can not transport the item to a lab right away it is very important to place the blood item in a
refrigerator until it can be transported to the crime lab. The main purpose of evidence tag and labeling
items found in sence is so that it will be easy to identify later on as the case

Awakening Essay
When Kate Chopin s The Awakening was published at the end of the 19th Century, many reviewers
took issue with what they perceived to be the author s defiance of Victorian proprieties, but it is this
very defiance with which has been responsible for the revival in the interest of the novel today. This
factor is borne out by Chopin s own words throughout her Preface where she indicates that women
were not recipients of equal treatment. (Chopin, Preface ) Edna takes her own life at the book s end,
not because of remorse over having committed adultery but because she can no longer struggle against
the social conventions which deny her fulfillment as a person and as a woman. Like Kate Chopin
herself, Edna is an artist and a woman of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Edna finally resolved to end her life it is not because she has been rejected by Robert but
because she can no longer lead the type authentic life which to her is the only life worth living, and
this is the result of the denial of equal rights to women by the society of that day.
Chopin has clearly taken care to anticipate criticisms that her suicide would leave the children
motherless by having her recently visit the children to find that they really had no need of her and are
perfectly content with the grandmother. In having Edna reflect that she would never sacrifice herself
for her children, Chopin was not arguing so much in defense of selfish ness as against the view that a
mother could be expected to deny her own freedom for the sake the children in a manner that was not
expected of the father. Thus, women s struggle is synonymous with Edna s suicide as well as the
events leading up to it. Edna plays a significant role in this story. Overall, I personally construed K.
Chopin s novel as a repudiation of prevailing mores which govern women s behavior during that
period in time. Edna was an outsider. She did not comprehend that the personal freedoms she saw all
about her were well defined within a construct of old established social conventions,

The Importance Of Horror Films
Horror films have slowly but surely become one of the most popular and beloved film genres. Due to
the genre s widespread popularity, it would be assumed that there is a clear identified reason that
people are so dedicated to this specific industry, but that is not the case. The truth is there are a
multitude of reasons. According to Maggie McCutcheon s Too Disturbing, Too Shocking , one reason
for horror movies is it allows the viewer to be scared without the fear of mortal doom following them
out of the theater. Because horror films have many purposes, and this purpose is stated by many, this
paper will discuss the importance that conquering the fear of the supernatural plays in the success of
horror movies.
One purpose of horror films is to allow the audience to confront the fear of the supernatural. Many
experts that are succeeding in both the creation and study of horror films have deemed this as one of
the most common reasons that today s society has so heavily gravitated toward the genre. In Stanley
Solomon s The Nightmare World , he concurs with Dirks claim and believes that one of the biggest
purposes horror films serve is to conqueror fears. In this article, Solomon observes that there are
suppressed fears within every individual that need to be conquered (Soloman 796). These fears need to
be defeated so that people are not consumed and over run by a seemingly irrational fear (Dirks 1). The
Horror films supply a more than adequate environment for

The Life Of A Slave Girl By Harriet Jacob Essay
The Impact of an Audience The introductory line of Harriet Jacob s preface to Incidents in the Life of
a Slave Girl, Reader, be assured this narrative is no fiction , is short yet serving (Jacobs 224).
Although brief in its nature, this statement manages to encompass two major aspects that characterize
African American literature: audience and truth. In all writing, understanding the target audience and
how to arrange an argument or essay to appeal to that specific crowd is paramount. However, it is
especially important for African American authors, who typically need to expose injustices or call for
social change in their works. In particular, two African American authors who understood their
audience and how to manipulate that understanding were Charles W. Chesnutt and Marcus Garvey.
Although they were born only twenty nine years apart, Chesnutt and Garvey technically wrote for
different time periods. While Chesnutt s work is associated with Literature of the Reconstruction ,
Garvey was grouped with authors and activists from the Harlem Renaissance (Gates and Smith 580 ).
The separation of their literary epochs drove Chesnutt and Garvey to write for contradistinctive
audiences that demanded unique written techniques and rhetorical strategies, but that both asked for
utmost honesty. For starters, although born in Ohio, Charles W. Chesnutt was raised in North Carolina.
Consequently, this relocation provided him with a front row seat to witness the Reconstruction that

Telephoto Lens
A telephoto lens can also change the perspective of the picture, giving a completely new angle or
focus to your photo. Also, telephoto lenses are handy at compressing perspective. This is when the
background of a photo appears to be closer to the subject than what is experienced with the naked eye.
This is beneficial when you cannot physically move your subject closer to the background. You can
also fill the frame of your photo by getting shots from a far distance. This will bring in objects further
back into the frame, filling out the edges of your shot nicely. With this lens, you can isolate far away
objects much better than with a wide angle lens. Since the telephoto zoom closes the distance between
you and your subject, it is ideal for capturing pictures of wildlife. Next to using an actual telescope, a
telephoto lens is the best way to photograph the moon. It can show features and definition of the moon
that your DSLR would otherwise not pick up. This lens can also capture action shots, as well as create

The same is true if you were to angle your camera down towards the ground. Generally, you will want
to point your camera straight ahead focused on the object you are capturing. Since wide angle lenses

strong depth of field is when the background seems to go on forever, and there are many defining
features you can pick out. This is very popular in landscape and other environmental pictures when
there is not one specific subject, but instead the scenery is the most important element of the photo. As
you can see, there are many reasons why a wide angle lens may interest you. Prices start in the $150
range, and increase depending on brand and specifications. After the kit and telephoto lens, it is the

The character I chose was from a book titled Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare. I found
Shylock to be an interesting character since there was a tremendous change with regard to his
character. At the beginning on the book, Shylock was depicted as a man who was cruel and selfish.
The plot of the story illustrates how people hated him because he did not show mercy to any person
who default his payments. His cruel character is depicted when he intentionally lend Antonio cash
knowing that he would not be able to pay it back on time. This character is facilitated by the fact that
the terms and conditions laid on the loan are barbaric. Shylock insists on a pound of flesh from

Dubose s fight with addiction and her willingness to face the illness head on despite knowing that it s

courageous act is when the mob confronts Atticus at the jail, determined to kill not only Tom but also
Atticus, if necessary. Jem refuses to obey father for the first time in his life. Scout explains, In the
midst of this strange assembly, Atticus stood trying to make Jem mind him. I am not going, was the
steady answer. Scout recognizes that Jem is exhibiting great courage. Scout, however, is braver by
addressing the mob, although, ironically, she has no idea how brave she s being. Not until she s safety
tucked in bed that night does Scout realize that the line between bravery and foolhardiness is thin.
This act of bravery enables Jem to separate the men in the mob into individuals, so they are no longer
thinking as a mob and more and more as in individuals. She also reminds them that they have children
at home and less hate and more love fill their minds as they listen to her ask usual questions. With this,
Scout and Jem were able to separate the mob and stop them from fighting Atticus. The issue of slavery

Somali Ethnic Groups
The History, Religion, and Traditions of Somalia s Ethnic Groups Somali ethnic groups do not only
live in Somalia, they live in northern Kenya, the Ogaden region of eastern Ethiopia, and Djibouti.
Even though Somali ethnic groups live in different places around Somalia, they still consider
themselves as one. The country of Somalia is best understood by learning about the Horn of Africa,
defining its common religion, and examining its rich traditions. Comprehending the history of the
Horn of Africa is important in order to understand its effect on Somali ethnic groups. Unlike most of
African nations, Somalia is made up of single, homogeneous ethnic groups (Lewis). Somalia shares a
uniform language, religion, and culture that leads to a common ancestor. In the mid 1800s, Somalia
was broken down into several territories by Colonies. The French controlled the northern region (the
area that is now Djibouti), the British colonized northern Somalia (creating a country called British
Somaliland), Italians governed southern Somalia (creating Italian Somaliland), Ethiopia controlled the
region of Ogaden, and Kenya controlled the northern border that contains Somalis (Lewis). In 1900,
British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland peacefully obtained independence and were united to form
the current borders of Somalia (Lewis). After World War II, British gain control of Ogaden which was

prior damage from predecessor Jimmy Carter, including the issue of the Iranian Hostage Crisis as well
as damage inflicted by the Vietnam War from years prior. Reagan s start in politics was not the normal
approach. Coming from a successful career as a popular Hollywood actor, Reagan acquired his
interest in politics in a more unconventional way. As president of the Screen Actors Guild, Reagan

when he left office it had dropped to 9.72% . Under Reaganomics, 16 million new jobs were created.
Not only did he cut tax rates, but the Tax Reform Act of 1986 simplified the income tax code by
eliminating many tax shelters, reducing the number of deductions and tax brackets. Reagan s dream of
tax returns fitting on a postcard has been nullified as Congress has regressed and continued to make
the tax code more complex, necessitating a new push for reform. Reagan played a large part in

The World Trade Organization s Agenda And Implementation...
INTRODUCTION Dating back to 1949, the World Trade Organization was preceded by the General
Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. The primary purpose of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade
was to reduce tariffs and other barriers to trade, as well as to eliminate preferences in order for trade to
be mutually advantageous. Currently, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade is still in effect
under the World Trade Organization, which was established to facilitate international trade, economic
growth and development. However, the goals of the World Trade Organization have been called into
question. Although the intergovernmental organization was established in order to aid developing
states to succeed into developed states, the World Trade Organization has been criticized for widening
the social gap between the Global North and South. The World Trade Organization s agenda and
implementation of its agreements have all served to advance the interests of developed states,
sidelining the interests of developing states. What is increasingly more alarming is the fact that three
fourths of the members within the World Trade Organization compromise of developing states. This
paper will aim to analyze the various ways in which the World Trade Organization has marginalized
and allowed for the exploitation of developing states. Through examining the consequences of foreign
direct investment, the dispute settlement process, tariff escalation and the TRIPS agreement, this paper

Sympathy By Paul Laurence Dunbar
With it all, I cannot help being overwhelmed by self doubts. I hope there is something worthy in my
writings and not merely the novelty of a black face associated with the power to rhyme that has

experienced many difficult encounters with being African American ( Paul Laurence Dunbar 2 ).
Therefore, going through these multiple sorrows in his life is what inspired his greatest works as a
poet. He uses these difficulties to make poetry that can be influential to readers. Many poets have been
influential on American literature, including Paul Laurence Dunbar (Munroe Paul Laurence Dunbar ).

In the poem Dunbar associated his life and experiences with the words he uses in his poem. He
describes the tougher times in his life, that other people can relate too. Dunbar went through a variety
of events where he couldn t do something because of his ethnicity. That is another example of what he
is trying to relate to in Life s Tragedy . In the poem Dunbar uses alliteration and consonance. For
example in line seven and eight, There the potent sorrow, there the grief, the pale, sad staring. The
people he is speaking to is anyone that has gone through tragedies in their life that struggle to find joy.
Dunbar s perspective in the poem is he has gone through too much sorrow and pain in his time, that
when the good things do come it is difficult to enjoy them as you should. For example in line fifteen
till the end he says, We count our joys not by what we have, But by what kept us from that perfect
thing (Paul Laurence Dunbar Poem Hunter). The theme of this poem is to try and cherish the positive
things in life when they come along, rather than always think about the negative that has happened in
the past. Paul Laurence Dunbar s poem Life s Tragedy is spoken in the terms of reflection and

The Death Of A Rush Hour Horde
The air was heavy with the smell of beer, fumes of cigarettes, smoke stacks from the large industrial
work buildings, and a foul stench reaping from the human labor of long hours, and hard days. The
infamous rush hour horde scurried from cab to bus to train station all seeking an outlet of relief after a
long day, whether it be at a bar or where they respectively reside. Jensen, a weary man with enough
corrugation throughout his face resulting from the tireless stress making him look 20 years older than
he truly was, was sitting on a beaten down wooden bar stool with one of those typical red cushions,
sleeves rolled up, tie distorted, wiping the grease of his face, and attempting to signal the bartender, of
whom always was scowling.
Hey there, stranger, the woman just out of his peripheral view had said.
At first he didn t even acknowledge it; just another voice among the many in the distance. He was just
kicking his stool in with his big brown work boots and was on the way to his friends at a nearby table,
when he suddenly heard that same woman s voice again:
Hi stranger
But this time, she had come so close to his ear that he could feel her warm breath upon him. Abruptly
stopping in his tracks towards the table, he was now intrigued by this voice, thinking:
Why was this woman speaking to me? Where did I know her from?
Jensen turned. He wouldn t have recognized the voice or the face if any further. She looked aged, huge
bags under her eyes and almost too skinny.

The Immediate Responsiveness Of Conditioned Pain Modulation
The purpose of the study is to assess the immediate responsiveness of conditioned pain modulation
(CPM; formerly known as diffuse noxious inhibition control or DNIC) as an outcome variable and its
association with neck pain and global rating of change (GROC) in neck function among chronic neck
pain sufferers between the 1st to 5th years from the onset of condition. Chronic neck pain is largely
non specific in nature and requires a biopsychosocial understanding of risk factors to mitigate their
poor outcome. Practice guidelines highlight the importance of classifying these patients, which
includes a biopsychosocial perspective for effective intervention (Cote et al 2016). Recent evidence
also points to the success of personalized pain management that is anchored on specific
neurophysiologic mechanism underpinning the pain experience of each individual (Nir and Yartniksy
2015). There is emerging evidence that simultaneously evaluating this neurophysiologic mechanism,
along with biopsychosocial variables identified risk factors related to the development of chronic neck
pain at one year (Shahidi et al 2015). There is extensive literature on pain and function outcome
variables relating to biopsychosocial factors. In the past few years, there is growing evidence in the
neurophysiologic mechanisms literature that includes CPM/DNIC s validity and reliability in various
chronic pain states. There is a call for CPM/DNIC to be used as outcome variable because it signifies
the status

Injustice And Social Injustices
Introduction
Though the concept of social injustice is universal in nature, the experience varies with each person.
Factors like a person race, or gender can further influence the severity of the injustice; victims caught
in the overlap between discriminations often go unrecognized by the law and society. Many people
recognize the names Michael Brown, Eric Garner, and Tamir Rice as African Americans who were
murdered by local police. But names like Michelle Cusseaux, Tanish Anderson, and Meagan
Hockaday often receive less feedback even though they are also murdered African Americans. The
only distinction between the sets of names is gender. Even within racial injustice, discrimination is
present between genders as some cases get national ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a publication titled Black Women in Academe , author Yolanda Moses describes how isolation,
invisibility, hostility, indifference, and a lack of understanding of the Black women s experiences are
all too often part of the climate Black women may face on campuses (Moses, 1989). The detrimental
environment surrounding these women frequently results in sullenness, lack of social assertiveness,
and belief that they are less competent than male students. Even if time spent at an academic
institution is minimal, with this kind of prejudice faced at an early age, any woman black or otherwise,
would suffer the rest of their life. In response to the discrimination faced at universities, some have
created programs to aid black students and other minorities; these programs tend to generalize the
needs of all its black students and do not fully support black women specifically.
Double discrimination and its effects are not only seen in academe. Social injustice occurs in any
situation where people are treated unequally and includes discrimination and racism. For much of the
twentieth century, crime and punishment have provided some of the most powerful symbols of racial
divide in America (Rosich, 2007). Generally tried in a white dominated legal system, black victims
often face harsher punishment, longer sentences, and unfair trials. Rosich s research indicates that
white Americans widely believe that people of

The Face Of Battle By John Keegan
John Keegan describes his book, The Face of Battle, as a personal attempt to catch a glimpse of the
face of battle. This personal aspect that Keegan mentions is essential to his book and is excellently
articulated, driving home his point. Keegan, who taught at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst for
over 25 years, begins by acknowledging his uneasiness with the fact that even though he taught British
cadets military history, I have not been in a battle; not near one, nor heard one from afar, nor seen the
aftermath . . . And I grow increasingly convinced that I have very little idea of what a battle can be
like. Keegan is clear to state his proposition that almost all military history has functioned simply as a
battle piece description in which one can see all the larger moving aspects followed by the outcome.
However, this sort of recounting fails to acknowledge the personal side of war, the experience of
battle. What really ensues when a cavalry unit meets an infantry unit? What are the vital features in
determining whether soldiers stand and fight or turn and run?
Having proposed that military history has been failing in its duty, Keegan then continues to
demonstrate how it should be done. The battles of Agincourt, Waterloo, and the Somme are the main
interests of the book; these battles took place centuries apart and all involved British armies. He
examines, in detail, which aspects of war changed or remain constant between the three battles.
Keegan brilliantly and

TheThe difficulty, however, about such an inquiry is that nearly all the available data are confined to
those concrete survivals like graves, sacred places and their contents, sculptures, bas reliefs,
engravings and paintings that have escaped the ravages of time. Their interpretation must be to some
extent conjectural, but much of the material has survived, little changed, in everyday occurrence
among the peoples who live today under conditions very similar to those of early humans. If employed
with proper caution such evidence can afford useful and illuminating clues to the purpose and
meaning of prehistoric religion. Short history of Prehistoric of Europe Prehistoric people lived on the
European continent as long ago as the Ice Age. Civilization began to come from Egypt and Asia by
way of the islands of the Aegean Sea in about 2000 BC. In time this flowered into the splendors of
Greek and Roman culture. Europe s recorded history begins with these cultures. After centuries of

In May it is said how Mama Elena, Tita s mother, held her own against the rebels using a shotgun in
order to protect Tita, Chencha(the house maid), and the ranch. When the rebels confront her she is told
to step aside but she doesn t and holds her ground against the leader. The leader at a lost for words
looks Mama Elena in the eye and notices that Mama Elena is not an individual to be reckoned with
and so he commands his troops to follow Mama Elena s orders and only take what is outside. They
fell prisoner to a childlike fear of maternal authority (pg 90). The rebels and their leader coward from
Mama Elena out of fear of being punished by her; as if they were her children. Furthermore this shows
how Mama Elena s strict and stern attitude not only puts fear in her daughters but also puts the same
exact fear in those who challenge her. By Mama Elena putting fear into anyone that challenges this
shows that she may not be caring but uses her power to shape individuals into what she thinks is best.
Therefore this shows that Mama Elena uses fear as power over her daughters in order to shape them
into proper women. Another example of how Mama Elena s actions are perceived by other people is

Figurative Language In The Chocolate War By Robert Cormier
In the novel The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier, the characters are over exaggerated, to state a
clear point that this is not a normal story. The story does not follow a regular story line, but one that
Robert Cormier decides is fit in his mind and he over exaggerates it aswell for an effect to state his
point that, not every time you disturb the universe something good comes out.
Robert Cormier wanted the characters be different, he did not make them how others wanted, being
socially acceptable, he wrote the book how he thought it should have went in his mind, and doing so
he gave the readers some new to read not just the everyday novel. Cormier gives the reader many
examples of figurative language to express the real meaning of the story for example, Caroni watched
the chalk in Brother Leon s hands, the way the teacher pressed it, rolled it, his fingers like the legs of
spiders with a victim in their clutch. (90) In this quote Cormier gives a similar to exaggerate about
how Brother Leon was holding the chalk in his hands. It sends a powerful message to the reader that
Brother Leon is a horrible man, who had no mercy and he is seen by others as a powerful
administrator in the school using quid pro quo in his own evil type of way. Cormier also uses more
figurative language to give a specific emotion that Cormier was trying to express throughout his
novel, that not every time someone disturbs the universe something good comes out of it. What
happened with Renault was bad enough, but there was violence in the air. (209) This quote is the the
example that even though Renault did disturb the universe and did try to stop the chocolate sale, he
failed and something bad happened to him for trying. In the end Jerry s attempts to stop the chocolate
sales failed, and still there was still violence in the air meaning the enemy he tried to defeat was angry,
but still undefeated. And many readers dislike Cormiers way to end the book in a way that the hero
does not defeat the villain(s). Like Richard Peck said The young will understand the outcome. They

Master Harold vs No Exit Essay
The setting of a play is extremely vital. It could a form of symbolism, foreshadowing, or it can affect
the characters in the play. The is exactly the case in both No Exit by Jean Paul Sartre and Master
Harold ...and the boys by Athol Fugard. The setting in both plays contain of one room that mainly
consists of three major characters. The setting has an enormous impact on the behavior of the
characters. The time period in which both plays are form also effect the style of writing and the
characters. No Exit has an existentialist style of writing were as Master Harold ...and the boys was
written in the apartheid era of South Africa. Both books have similar settings, but also involve some
dissimilarity. The stage directions and the dialogue ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This play is based in a small coffee shop in South Africa. A rainy day forces the shop to very
unproductive. Still there are two African workers with the son of the white owner. Look at the three of
us this afternoon (Fugard 46). Sam is talking to the rest saying that only the three of them are here this
afternoon. Fugard uses the one room to keep all of the characters together. He is trying to get the
audience to perceive them as friends at the beginning of the play. He wants to show the effect of
staying in a room with a select few can change the atmosphere of the room. Sartre and Fugard are both
trying to show the harmless side of the characters before the setting changes them and the
circumstances. The effect of the one room on anyone for a long period of time will result in hatred and
bias. In No Exit the two female characters, Inez and Estelle, want to kill each other by the end of the
play. Right! In that case, I ll stop her watching. (She picks up the PAPER knife and stabs Inez several
times.) (Sartre 45). Estelle is say that she will not let her watch her and Garcin. She takes the paper
knife in the room and starts to stab Inez. Estelle forgets that since they are in hell, she is already dead
and the knife has no effect on her. Estelle has a strong sense of hatred for Inez and vice versa. The
people also start to favor one over the other. Now then. Your lips. Give me your lips (Sartre

The Importance Of Happiness In Literature
Humankind, regardless of geography, gender, sexual orientation, religion, race, education or economic
status all come to down to one thing within everyone, which is happiness. Through literature that
authors provide insight, comfort, and oftentimes advice to help us cope with our humanity. In
literature, it illustrates all the human conditions that we humans face. We are so fond of some
literature because we can relate to the human condition even though we may not know it sometimes.
Through a few literatures I am going to link the human condition, Happiness , and connect it to our
society to see where that relativeness comes in.
Happiness is usually the human condition, we struggle to understand. In the poem, Who understands

She is in envy of her sister is because she compares herself to her. She s looking at the positive of her
sister and the negatives of herself. Maggie hasn t accepted her scars that is why she is not happy with
herself. Often times people today compare themselves to other people and they find it hard to accept
themselves. Another thing it says I did something I never had done before: hugged Maggie to me, then
dragged her on into the room, snatched the quilts out of Miss Wangero s hands and dumped them into
Maggie s lap. (Walker L84) and then Maggie smiled; maybe at the sunglasses. But a real smile, not
scared. (Alice Walker) Affection wasn t apart of Maggie and her mom s relationship. No affection
could lead Maggie to think that she s not loved. How could she accept herself if no one else accepted
her? That reassurance her mom gave her was a relief that she was loved and accepted. In this story
Maggie learned to accept herself with the help of her mom, she then was able to smile. Acceptance is
the key to happiness.

Pythagoran Influence On Greek Society
The world of chaos and disorder has become the world of order and harmony. Ever since the ancient
Greek times, chaos has been in existence. This led people to start thinking outside of the box. Many
people started questioning why somethings were the way they were. As a result many philosophers
emerged in the pre Socratic times. Many people did not understand the world around them back in
those times. Gods were created for various reasons so that they can help explain certain phenomenons.
For many years, people used to live like this until some people started using logic and reasoning to
explain how things happened in the universe. These people that started thinking differently are known
as pre Socratic philosophers. Greek mythology came out ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However these were not the only fields in which discoveries were being made. One of the many men
that had made a huge impact on Greek and modern culture is Pythagoras. He is known for many
things including the Pythagorean Theorem. Pythagoras was from the same city Thales was from,
Miletus. As his life went on he moved to Croton, which was in the southern part of Italy. This is where
the secret religious society: Pythagoreans, was established. The Pythagoreans had taken over Croton
and various other Greek cities in the southern part of Italy. Pythagoras was also know for discovering
harmonics and shapes. The concept of harmonics is known as music in the modern word. The
Pythagoreans identified a pentagram on their hands. They called it the golden rectangle because it had
special properties. As the number of Pythagoreans increased and all of this knowledge started
emerging, cosmos was starting to build. Cosmos was a fundamental Pythagorean belief. Cosmos
means orderly universe. The Greek culture transitioned from a society filled with chaos where all gods

Bill Gates Vs Bill Gates Similarities
For people in my own age group, our oldest memories of computers are most likely the pinball game
on Windows XP, and Google s website showing a different font. A little earlier than that, documents
were saved on floppy disks instead of USB drives, and before that, network connections were made
over a phone line. However, it is hard for anyone to imagine a time when having a computer on every
desk and in every home was regarded as an impossibility, even if they remember those years
(Academy of Achievement). The personal computer has evolved into an essential tool in the daily
lives of most Americans, because of the wave of innovations that Bill Gates kicked off in 1975. Bill
Gates was raised as a fierce competitor, which he demonstrated at a young age when waterskiing or
playing tennis with his family. However, he was even more intense when he went up against
intellectual challenges, which his parents found out soon after enrolling him in the Lakeside School. In
1967, a terminal was set up in the Seattle private school, which could use the resources of an off site
computer for the duration of a paid session, and Gates was immediately hooked. Along with Paul
Allen, he learned the programming language, BASIC, which was in use at the time, and the two
students took every opportunity for computer time they could get. When Paul Allen reflected on this
time, he noted one key difference between Gates and himself: Where I was curious to study
everything in sight, Bill would

A Brief Note On Ann Landers, An American Advice Columnist...
Ann Landers, was an American advice columnist and eventually a nation wide media celebrity. A 1978
World Almanac Survey named her the most influential woman in the United States. She had once
mentioned that Television has proved that people will look at anything rather than each other. It means
that people would rather look that a screen than facing towards to people. This reminds me of a time in
my life when I was alone in both freshman and sophomore years. There were any times when I have
nowhere to go for lunch. No one really talked to me. It was really dreadful for me. As the years go by I
eventually improve my interaction significantly. Now to the present day, I know why I was like that.
Sense I had some experience with social media and how I see my older cousins change over the time.
It turned out that I was antisocial, I eventually notice that I don t really open up. I don t really got out
of my comfort zone. That was my problem in school, but in my older cousins case. It was going the
opposite direction, on what I have notice, we all have different interpretations on how we view certain
things, and I think thats is the major cause on why we don t have that type of connection, with each
other. But what doesn t make sense to me is that we are family we should be able to communicate with
each other without judging our differences, but that was just my own perspective on what family
should be. Anyway, I will do my best to find a way to get to know my cousins once

Across The World, There Are Many Global Health Issues Which
Across the world, there are many global health issues which are being played out in which society
faces. Whether it be a developing issue or one that has been plaguing society for an amount of time, as
the world becomes a more globalized entity, many are beginning to realize that while we may face
challenges individual to more local levels, there are just as many challenges that we must take on
together. Climate change, and its effect upon human health, is one of these uniting challenges. While
climate changes have occurred throughout the course of planet Earth s history, the world is now
witnessing a dramatic increase in the amount of negative impacts caused by changes in our climate. At
an alarming rate, these changes are occurring and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For the sake of this paper, there will be two different types of impacts of climate change on human
health: physical impact and mental impact. Now, the majority of the effects of climate change are
indeed physical impacts, for this includes problems such as severe weather events, raising
temperatures, and an increase in numerous disease across the globe. These physical impacts are what
many of the sources in regards to the topic mainly focus on. A few, however, do take time to mention
the importance of mental health in regards to climate change. In often cases, mental health can be a
result of physical impacts, but as the issue of global climate change becomes progressively more
crucial, that is not always the case. Both physical and mental impacts can have impacts on how
society, on all levels, functions, and if we are not careful to take appropriate action, society may begin
to crumble, at least only slightly. It is now coming to light that both the physical and mental impacts
are important to be addressed when discussing climate change action.
What remains important, is that even though climate change is, or may, effecting the health of us all in
some way, and it is a global issue, that each region of the world in impacted differently. This means
that while it

Essay Constructing Complex Synthetic Gene Circuits
Regulation of any biological phenotype is a complex and tuned phenomenon (Weng et al, 1999).
Biological systems face frequent change in the environment, both at intrinsic and extrinsic levels.
These systems have evolved themselves to integrate these fluctuations and take an appropriate
decision (Helikar et al, 2008). Classical genetics and DNA sequencing have provided a lot of
information about different types of genes and their functions, but how do these genes interact and
integrate environmental signals to encode different phenotypic responses, is not clearly understood.
Emergence of synthetic biology has enabled biologists to characterize these genetic components in
isolation and predict the behavior of complex networks. Synthetic ... Show more content on

Each repeat comprised of 33 to 34 amino acids. Different repeats vary mostly at position 12 and 13.
Amino acids present at these two positions are called repeat variable di residues (RVDs). Each RVD
has preference for a nucleotide. Repeats are modular and can be assembled in required way to bind
with any target DNA sequence (Gaber et al, 2014; Meckler et al, 2013). TALEs are thus a powerful
and modular tool, which can be engineered to target any DNA sequence. Riboswitches are non protein
coding regulatory RNA, present in 5´ untranslated (UTR) region of mRNA, that upon binding with
small molecules or peptides undergo conformational changes to control gene expression at
translational level. Riboswitches are conceptually comprised of two parts (i) ligand specific aptamer
domain, and (ii) expression platform, which undergoes structural changes in response to the changes
in the aptamer (Winkler Breaker, 2005). Ligand driven conformational change regulates translation
either by sequestering ribosome binding site or by releasing it (Caron et al, 2012). Engineered
riboswitches have been reported to be modular and work in dose dependent manner (Ceres et al, 2013;
Dixon et al, 2010).
Modular nature of Riboswitch and TALE encouraged us to design a novel set of regulatory systems,
RiboTALEs, which have multidimensional input control, like natural complex gene circuits, target
specificity, and shall have ability of scale up to virtually control

Girolamo Savonarola s Influence On The Renaissance
Girolamo Savonarola was a controversial figure in the late 1400s. Savonarola, through divine visions,
would predict the coming of a great tyrant that sought to ruin Florence. King Charles VIII of France
would be that tyrant and Savonarola a hero for convincing the king to leave Florence undisturbed.
This connection with the divine and his deep religious beliefs would play a big role in renaissance
Florence. It is these religious beliefs that would influence his politics and how he fit within the role of
the Renaissance. Savonarola fits into the Renaissance context as a force that wishes to maintain
absolute devotion to god. He is someone who wants to keep away humanist thought and have
everyone submit to God in all aspects of life. While people like Pico della Mirandola and Cardano
were very religious men, their approach to thought put more emphasis on humankind than God. This
way of thought would soon become ever more dominate as time carried on. To start, looking at how he
mixed politics and religion may give a better understanding of what type of person he was.
Savonarola being the deeply religious man he was, it is of no surprise that these beliefs in god would
work their way into his political ideas. When he was brought on as an advisor for the government of
Florence, he was asked how Florence was best to be governed. Drawing on his divine beliefs, he
stated that the world is governed by one Being, Who is God, and that all natural things in which one
can see some form

An Array Of Patterns Of Nonrandom Mating
Species that mate assortatively choose their mate according to their own phenotypic characteristics
(Molles Jr. Cahill Jr., 2014). It is a term used to describe an array of patterns of nonrandom mating
(Molles Jr. Cahill Jr., 2014). It encompasses a correlation, which can be positive or negative, between
the male and female phenotypes, similarities or dissimilarities, respectively (Ng Williams, 2014).
Assortative mating has several impacts on the evolution of a species or population. When it is positive
it can increase homozygous characteristics, thus decreasing the less favorable intermediate phenotypes
and going more towards the phenotypes that increase fitness and survival but can also work to keep
the species/population phenotypically the same when it is thriving (Molles Jr. Cahill Jr., 2014). It also
increases speciation, especially sympatric speciation (Molles Jr. Cahill Jr., 2014). By comparison,
negative assortative mating can increase heterozygous characteristics, this is favorable to create a
stabilizing evolution for the species (Molles Jr. Cahill Jr., 2014). Species can choose the way they
mate, depending on what is best for the species, and there can be a mixture of the species for the
intermediate phenotypes versus the extreme phenotypes (Ng Williams, 2014). In each of the three
studies the species (the convict cichlid fish (Amatitlania siquia), bridge spider (Larinioides
sclopetarius), and dioecious mangrove snail (Littoraria ardouiniana))

Religion And Its Influence On Religion
Religion Influencing Kingship
Religion and the influence it has on kingship has fascinated scholars in fields such as history and
religious studies. Kingship has been influenced by the use of religion for the purpose of legitimizing
power, keeping promises to its people, and finding reason for life. Religious influence on kingship
seems to be an almost universal concept in human history. The acceptance of religion has changed
many kings lives, for the better. All throughout history, religion has expressed the answer to our
deepest questions that we ask. It has been dedicated to be centrally place in the lives of all civilizations
and cultures. Religion had a great influence on how Ashoka, Clovis and Charlemagne ruled their
people.
Ashoka was born in the year 304 BC to a military family who did not practice religion. After a civil
war in India, the warrior Ashoka became the third emperor of the powerful Mauryan dynasty. Emperor
Ahsoka was soon to gain the reputation of being a very cruel and evil emperor. He began his reign by
dedicating to expand the empire that already had been established. In the year 263 BC Ahsoka
conquered the Kalinga nation and soon he ruled a sizeable portion of India. But in the process of
conquering the Kalinga nation, Ashoka shamelessly killed roughly 200,000 people during the Kalinga
Battle. After living with such regret and remorse for the huge amount of lost life, he decided to turn to
religion. The Rock Edicts of King Ashoka Excerpts

The Role Of Mass Media On Politics
Studies show how the role of mass media has triggered an enormous influence in the lives of our
nation s citizens. Nevertheless, what I have observed over the course of my life is how the mass media
have predominantly swayed, persuaded and changed various people s views and opinions of the world
quite drastically. A journalist s influence on politics and the election process can influence various
undecided voters for they are the ones choosing what appears in the media. Pertaining to the press, we
observe how exactly mass media play a role in shaping public opinion. Consequently, mass media
have changed from a time when the government used the media as a medium to influence voters,
committees, and communities. However, the media have the authority and ability to inform the people,
yet, repeatedly, the stories given to the public come across as biased and distorted for reasons we don t
fully comprehend. Through the practice of slant and sensationalism, we begin to understand the ways
the media have begun to form our views and interpretations in society as well as the method by which
we choose our nation s leaders.
Sometime in the near future, once I become a reporter/journalist, my usage of mass media will greatly
influence elections. Research shows that journalists are the individuals who hold the power over the
U.S. political process since they are the watchdogs of elections. Through inquiry, I discovered that the
first way journalists become involved in elections is by

Jung Typology Test Essay
In the Jung Typology Test, it measures your personality type. I have taken a similar test before so I

like that I tried to figure out what I did the most. To be honest I had to ask my husband what he
thought, because sometimes people know you better than you know yourself. I was also in denial with
myself on some of the questions. My personality type is ENFJ. Extravert 41%, iNtuitive 38%, Feeling

are helpers and enablers. It also said that I was a global learner and see the big picture. What really hit
home for me is that they mentioned organization, decisiveness, feelers and neglect my own needs. I
consider myself a very charismatic person. In previous jobs people loved to work with me because I

  • 2. Criminal Evidence Analysis Long again before DNA was founded detectives relied on their own instincts, witnesses, and suspect confession to solve a crime. The past decade has seen great advances in a powerful criminal justice tool: deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA. DNA can be used to identify criminals with incredible accuracy when biological evidence exists. By the same token, DNA can be used to clear suspects and exonerate persons mistakenly accused or convicted of crimes. In all, DNA technology is increasingly vital to ensuring accuracy and fairness in the criminal justice system (justice.gov,2014). In today s world of crimes nothing has been founded more reliable in court than a DNA evidence. Evidence can include weapons, tape recorder, photographs, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some evidence needs to breath or dry (for example, blood or semen stains), and a paper container will be needed for that evidence . Each item of evidence must be packaged and preserved separately, so as not to contaminate or confuse.Evidence should never be mixed (Buckles,2007). If a CSI is assigned to collect a wet bloodstained clothing from an assault victim who suffered facial lacerations and minor stab wounds to the torso, the photographs should be taken pictures of the scene before collecting evidence. First, to collect the wet bloodstained clothing it important to place each item in a clean unused paper, or plastic bag. Moreover, clothing bloodstain should be packaged in a paper bag or plastic bag to avoid contamination of other items. In addition, transport the package to a secured lab as soon as possible where the items need to be taken out of the bag to thoroughly air dry and examine. If a CIS can not transport the item to a lab right away it is very important to place the blood item in a refrigerator until it can be transported to the crime lab. The main purpose of evidence tag and labeling items found in sence is so that it will be easy to identify later on as the case ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Awakening Essay When Kate Chopin s The Awakening was published at the end of the 19th Century, many reviewers took issue with what they perceived to be the author s defiance of Victorian proprieties, but it is this very defiance with which has been responsible for the revival in the interest of the novel today. This factor is borne out by Chopin s own words throughout her Preface where she indicates that women were not recipients of equal treatment. (Chopin, Preface ) Edna takes her own life at the book s end, not because of remorse over having committed adultery but because she can no longer struggle against the social conventions which deny her fulfillment as a person and as a woman. Like Kate Chopin herself, Edna is an artist and a woman of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Edna finally resolved to end her life it is not because she has been rejected by Robert but because she can no longer lead the type authentic life which to her is the only life worth living, and this is the result of the denial of equal rights to women by the society of that day. Chopin has clearly taken care to anticipate criticisms that her suicide would leave the children motherless by having her recently visit the children to find that they really had no need of her and are perfectly content with the grandmother. In having Edna reflect that she would never sacrifice herself for her children, Chopin was not arguing so much in defense of selfish ness as against the view that a mother could be expected to deny her own freedom for the sake the children in a manner that was not expected of the father. Thus, women s struggle is synonymous with Edna s suicide as well as the events leading up to it. Edna plays a significant role in this story. Overall, I personally construed K. Chopin s novel as a repudiation of prevailing mores which govern women s behavior during that period in time. Edna was an outsider. She did not comprehend that the personal freedoms she saw all about her were well defined within a construct of old established social conventions, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Importance Of Horror Films Horror films have slowly but surely become one of the most popular and beloved film genres. Due to the genre s widespread popularity, it would be assumed that there is a clear identified reason that people are so dedicated to this specific industry, but that is not the case. The truth is there are a multitude of reasons. According to Maggie McCutcheon s Too Disturbing, Too Shocking , one reason for horror movies is it allows the viewer to be scared without the fear of mortal doom following them out of the theater. Because horror films have many purposes, and this purpose is stated by many, this paper will discuss the importance that conquering the fear of the supernatural plays in the success of horror movies. One purpose of horror films is to allow the audience to confront the fear of the supernatural. Many experts that are succeeding in both the creation and study of horror films have deemed this as one of the most common reasons that today s society has so heavily gravitated toward the genre. In Stanley Solomon s The Nightmare World , he concurs with Dirks claim and believes that one of the biggest purposes horror films serve is to conqueror fears. In this article, Solomon observes that there are suppressed fears within every individual that need to be conquered (Soloman 796). These fears need to be defeated so that people are not consumed and over run by a seemingly irrational fear (Dirks 1). The Horror films supply a more than adequate environment for ... • 5. The Life Of A Slave Girl By Harriet Jacob Essay The Impact of an Audience The introductory line of Harriet Jacob s preface to Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Reader, be assured this narrative is no fiction , is short yet serving (Jacobs 224). Although brief in its nature, this statement manages to encompass two major aspects that characterize African American literature: audience and truth. In all writing, understanding the target audience and how to arrange an argument or essay to appeal to that specific crowd is paramount. However, it is especially important for African American authors, who typically need to expose injustices or call for social change in their works. In particular, two African American authors who understood their audience and how to manipulate that understanding were Charles W. Chesnutt and Marcus Garvey. Although they were born only twenty nine years apart, Chesnutt and Garvey technically wrote for different time periods. While Chesnutt s work is associated with Literature of the Reconstruction , Garvey was grouped with authors and activists from the Harlem Renaissance (Gates and Smith 580 ). The separation of their literary epochs drove Chesnutt and Garvey to write for contradistinctive audiences that demanded unique written techniques and rhetorical strategies, but that both asked for utmost honesty. For starters, although born in Ohio, Charles W. Chesnutt was raised in North Carolina. Consequently, this relocation provided him with a front row seat to witness the Reconstruction that ... Also, telephoto lenses are handy at compressing perspective. This is when the background of a photo appears to be closer to the subject than what is experienced with the naked eye. This is beneficial when you cannot physically move your subject closer to the background. You can also fill the frame of your photo by getting shots from a far distance. This will bring in objects further back into the frame, filling out the edges of your shot nicely. With this lens, you can isolate far away objects much better than with a wide angle lens. Since the telephoto zoom closes the distance between you and your subject, it is ideal for capturing pictures of wildlife. I found Shylock to be an interesting character since there was a tremendous change with regard to his character. At the beginning on the book, Shylock was depicted as a man who was cruel and selfish. The plot of the story illustrates how people hated him because he did not show mercy to any person who default his payments. His cruel character is depicted when he intentionally lend Antonio cash knowing that he would not be able to pay it back on time. Not until she s safety tucked in bed that night does Scout realize that the line between bravery and foolhardiness is thin. This act of bravery enables Jem to separate the men in the mob into individuals, so they are no longer thinking as a mob and more and more as in individuals. She also reminds them that they have children at home and less hate and more love fill their minds as they listen to her ask usual questions. • 10. Somali Ethnic Groups The History, Religion, and Traditions of Somalia s Ethnic Groups Somali ethnic groups do not only live in Somalia, they live in northern Kenya, the Ogaden region of eastern Ethiopia, and Djibouti. Even though Somali ethnic groups live in different places around Somalia, they still consider themselves as one. The country of Somalia is best understood by learning about the Horn of Africa, defining its common religion, and examining its rich traditions. Comprehending the history of the Horn of Africa is important in order to understand its effect on Somali ethnic groups. Unlike most of African nations, Somalia is made up of single, homogeneous ethnic groups (Lewis). Somalia shares a uniform language, religion, and culture that leads to a common ancestor. In the mid 1800s, Somalia was broken down into several territories by Colonies. The French controlled the northern region (the area that is now Djibouti), the British colonized northern Somalia (creating a country called British Somaliland), Italians governed southern Somalia (creating Italian Somaliland), Ethiopia controlled the region of Ogaden, and Kenya controlled the northern border that contains Somalis (Lewis). • 12. The World Trade Organization s Agenda And Implementation... INTRODUCTION Dating back to 1949, the World Trade Organization was preceded by the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. The primary purpose of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade was to reduce tariffs and other barriers to trade, as well as to eliminate preferences in order for trade to be mutually advantageous. Currently, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade is still in effect under the World Trade Organization, which was established to facilitate international trade, economic growth and development. However, the goals of the World Trade Organization have been called into question. Although the intergovernmental organization was established in order to aid developing states to succeed into developed states, the World Trade Organization has been criticized for widening the social gap between the Global North and South. The World Trade Organization s agenda and implementation of its agreements have all served to advance the interests of developed states, sidelining the interests of developing states. What is increasingly more alarming is the fact that three fourths of the members within the World Trade Organization compromise of developing states. I hope there is something worthy in my writings and not merely the novelty of a black face associated with the power to rhyme that has attracted attend , by Paul Laurence Dunbar. ( Paul Laurence Dunbar quotes ) Dunbar was a poet that experienced many difficult encounters with being African American ( Paul Laurence Dunbar 2 ). Therefore, going through these multiple sorrows in his life is what inspired his greatest works as a poet. He uses these difficulties to make poetry that can be influential to readers. He describes the tougher times in his life, that other people can relate too. Dunbar went through a variety of events where he couldn t do something because of his ethnicity. That is another example of what he is trying to relate to in Life s Tragedy . In the poem Dunbar uses alliteration and consonance. For example in line seven and eight, There the potent sorrow, there the grief, the pale, sad staring. The people he is speaking to is anyone that has gone through tragedies in their life that struggle to find joy. Dunbar s perspective in the poem is he has gone through too much sorrow and pain in his time, that when the good things do come it is difficult to enjoy them as you should. For example in line fifteen till the end he says, We count our joys not by what we have, But by what kept us from that perfect thing (Paul Laurence Dunbar Poem Hunter). The Death Of A Rush Hour Horde The air was heavy with the smell of beer, fumes of cigarettes, smoke stacks from the large industrial work buildings, and a foul stench reaping from the human labor of long hours, and hard days. The infamous rush hour horde scurried from cab to bus to train station all seeking an outlet of relief after a long day, whether it be at a bar or where they respectively reside. Jensen, a weary man with enough corrugation throughout his face resulting from the tireless stress making him look 20 years older than he truly was, was sitting on a beaten down wooden bar stool with one of those typical red cushions, sleeves rolled up, tie distorted, wiping the grease of his face, and attempting to signal the bartender, of whom always was scowling. Hey there, stranger, the woman just out of his peripheral view had said. At first he didn t even acknowledge it; just another voice among the many in the distance. He was just kicking his stool in with his big brown work boots and was on the way to his friends at a nearby table, when he suddenly heard that same woman s voice again: Hi stranger But this time, she had come so close to his ear that he could feel her warm breath upon him. Abruptly stopping in his tracks towards the table, he was now intrigued by this voice, thinking: Why was this woman speaking to me? Where did I know her from? Jensen turned. He wouldn t have recognized the voice or the face if any further. She looked aged, huge bags under her eyes and almost too skinny. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Immediate Responsiveness Of Conditioned Pain Modulation The purpose of the study is to assess the immediate responsiveness of conditioned pain modulation (CPM; formerly known as diffuse noxious inhibition control or DNIC) as an outcome variable and its association with neck pain and global rating of change (GROC) in neck function among chronic neck pain sufferers between the 1st to 5th years from the onset of condition. Chronic neck pain is largely non specific in nature and requires a biopsychosocial understanding of risk factors to mitigate their poor outcome. Practice guidelines highlight the importance of classifying these patients, which includes a biopsychosocial perspective for effective intervention (Cote et al 2016). Recent evidence also points to the success of personalized pain management that is anchored on specific neurophysiologic mechanism underpinning the pain experience of each individual (Nir and Yartniksy 2015). There is emerging evidence that simultaneously evaluating this neurophysiologic mechanism, along with biopsychosocial variables identified risk factors related to the development of chronic neck pain at one year (Shahidi et al 2015). There is extensive literature on pain and function outcome variables relating to biopsychosocial factors. In the past few years, there is growing evidence in the neurophysiologic mechanisms literature that includes CPM/DNIC s validity and reliability in various chronic pain states. In a publication titled Black Women in Academe , author Yolanda Moses describes how isolation, invisibility, hostility, indifference, and a lack of understanding of the Black women s experiences are all too often part of the climate Black women may face on campuses (Moses, 1989). The detrimental environment surrounding these women frequently results in sullenness, lack of social assertiveness, and belief that they are less competent than male students. Even if time spent at an academic institution is minimal, with this kind of prejudice faced at an early age, any woman black or otherwise, would suffer the rest of their life. In response to the discrimination faced at universities, some have created programs to aid black students and other minorities; these programs tend to generalize the needs of all its black students and do not fully support black women specifically. Double discrimination and its effects are not only seen in academe. Social injustice occurs in any situation where people are treated unequally and includes discrimination and racism. For much of the twentieth century, crime and punishment have provided some of the most powerful symbols of racial divide in America (Rosich, 2007). Generally tried in a white dominated legal system, black victims often face harsher punishment, longer sentences, and unfair trials. • 19. The Face Of Battle By John Keegan John Keegan describes his book, The Face of Battle, as a personal attempt to catch a glimpse of the face of battle. This personal aspect that Keegan mentions is essential to his book and is excellently articulated, driving home his point. Keegan, who taught at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst for over 25 years, begins by acknowledging his uneasiness with the fact that even though he taught British cadets military history, I have not been in a battle; not near one, nor heard one from afar, nor seen the aftermath . . . And I grow increasingly convinced that I have very little idea of what a battle can be like. Keegan is clear to state his proposition that almost all military history has functioned simply as a battle piece description in which one can see all the larger moving aspects followed by the outcome. However, this sort of recounting fails to acknowledge the personal side of war, the experience of battle. What really ensues when a cavalry unit meets an infantry unit? What are the vital features in determining whether soldiers stand and fight or turn and run? Having proposed that military history has been failing in its duty, Keegan then continues to demonstrate how it should be done. The battles of Agincourt, Waterloo, and the Somme are the main interests of the book; these battles took place centuries apart and all involved British armies. He examines, in detail, which aspects of war changed or remain constant between the three battles. Keegan brilliantly and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The leader at a lost for words looks Mama Elena in the eye and notices that Mama Elena is not an individual to be reckoned with and so he commands his troops to follow Mama Elena s orders and only take what is outside. They fell prisoner to a childlike fear of maternal authority (pg 90). The rebels and their leader coward from Mama Elena out of fear of being punished by her; as if they were her children. Furthermore this shows how Mama Elena s strict and stern attitude not only puts fear in her daughters but also puts the same exact fear in those who challenge her. By Mama Elena putting fear into anyone that challenges this shows that she may not be caring but uses her power to shape individuals into what she thinks is best. • 22. Figurative Language In The Chocolate War By Robert Cormier In the novel The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier, the characters are over exaggerated, to state a clear point that this is not a normal story. The story does not follow a regular story line, but one that Robert Cormier decides is fit in his mind and he over exaggerates it aswell for an effect to state his point that, not every time you disturb the universe something good comes out. Robert Cormier wanted the characters be different, he did not make them how others wanted, being socially acceptable, he wrote the book how he thought it should have went in his mind, and doing so he gave the readers some new to read not just the everyday novel. Cormier gives the reader many examples of figurative language to express the real meaning of the story for example, Caroni watched the chalk in Brother Leon s hands, the way the teacher pressed it, rolled it, his fingers like the legs of spiders with a victim in their clutch. (90) In this quote Cormier gives a similar to exaggerate about how Brother Leon was holding the chalk in his hands. It sends a powerful message to the reader that Brother Leon is a horrible man, who had no mercy and he is seen by others as a powerful administrator in the school using quid pro quo in his own evil type of way. Cormier also uses more figurative language to give a specific emotion that Cormier was trying to express throughout his novel, that not every time someone disturbs the universe something good comes out of it. What happened with Renault was bad enough, but there was violence in the air. (209) This quote is the the example that even though Renault did disturb the universe and did try to stop the chocolate sale, he failed and something bad happened to him for trying. In the end Jerry s attempts to stop the chocolate sales failed, and still there was still violence in the air meaning the enemy he tried to defeat was angry, but still undefeated. And many readers dislike Cormiers way to end the book in a way that the hero does not defeat the villain(s). Like Richard Peck said The young will understand the outcome. They won t like it but they ll understand. (10) And this is exactly what Cormier had in mind when he was writing the book, that the readers wouldn t like the ending, but ... A little earlier than that, documents were saved on floppy disks instead of USB drives, and before that, network connections were made over a phone line. However, it is hard for anyone to imagine a time when having a computer on every desk and in every home was regarded as an impossibility, even if they remember those years (Academy of Achievement). The personal computer has evolved into an essential tool in the daily lives of most Americans, because of the wave of innovations that Bill Gates kicked off in 1975. Bill Gates was raised as a fierce competitor, which he demonstrated at a young age when waterskiing or playing tennis with his family. However, he was even more intense when he went up against intellectual challenges, which his parents found out soon after enrolling him in the Lakeside School. In 1967, a terminal was set up in the Seattle private school, which could use the resources of an off site computer for the duration of a paid session, and Gates was immediately hooked. Along with Paul Allen, he learned the programming language, BASIC, which was in use at the time, and the two students took every opportunity for computer time they could get. Biological systems face frequent change in the environment, both at intrinsic and extrinsic levels. Classical genetics and DNA sequencing have provided a lot of information about different types of genes and their functions, but how do these genes interact and integrate environmental signals to encode different phenotypic responses, is not clearly understood. Repeats are modular and can be assembled in required way to bind with any target DNA sequence (Gaber et al, 2014; Meckler et al, 2013). TALEs are thus a powerful and modular tool, which can be engineered to target any DNA sequence. Riboswitches are non protein coding regulatory RNA, present in 5´ untranslated (UTR) region of mRNA, that upon binding with small molecules or peptides undergo conformational changes to control gene expression at translational level. Riboswitches are conceptually comprised of two parts (i) ligand specific aptamer domain, and (ii) expression platform, which undergoes structural changes in response to the changes in the aptamer (Winkler Breaker, 2005). Ligand driven conformational change regulates translation either by sequestering ribosome binding site or by releasing it (Caron et al, 2012). Engineered riboswitches have been reported to be modular and work in dose dependent manner (Ceres et al, 2013; Dixon et al, 2010). • 31. Girolamo Savonarola s Influence On The Renaissance Girolamo Savonarola was a controversial figure in the late 1400s. Savonarola, through divine visions, would predict the coming of a great tyrant that sought to ruin Florence. King Charles VIII of France would be that tyrant and Savonarola a hero for convincing the king to leave Florence undisturbed. This connection with the divine and his deep religious beliefs would play a big role in renaissance Florence. It is these religious beliefs that would influence his politics and how he fit within the role of the Renaissance. Savonarola fits into the Renaissance context as a force that wishes to maintain absolute devotion to god. He is someone who wants to keep away humanist thought and have everyone submit to God in all aspects of life. While people like Pico della Mirandola and Cardano were very religious men, their approach to thought put more emphasis on humankind than God. This way of thought would soon become ever more dominate as time carried on. To start, looking at how he mixed politics and religion may give a better understanding of what type of person he was. Savonarola being the deeply religious man he was, it is of no surprise that these beliefs in god would work their way into his political ideas. • 32. An Array Of Patterns Of Nonrandom Mating Species that mate assortatively choose their mate according to their own phenotypic characteristics (Molles Jr. Cahill Jr., 2014). It is a term used to describe an array of patterns of nonrandom mating (Molles Jr. Cahill Jr., 2014). It encompasses a correlation, which can be positive or negative, between the male and female phenotypes, similarities or dissimilarities, respectively (Ng Williams, 2014). Assortative mating has several impacts on the evolution of a species or population. When it is positive it can increase homozygous characteristics, thus decreasing the less favorable intermediate phenotypes and going more towards the phenotypes that increase fitness and survival but can also work to keep the species/population phenotypically the same when it is thriving (Molles Jr. Cahill Jr., 2014). It also increases speciation, especially sympatric speciation (Molles Jr. Cahill Jr., 2014). By comparison, negative assortative mating can increase heterozygous characteristics, this is favorable to create a stabilizing evolution for the species (Molles Jr. Cahill Jr., 2014). Species can choose the way they mate, depending on what is best for the species, and there can be a mixture of the species for the intermediate phenotypes versus the extreme phenotypes (Ng Williams, 2014).
