3D GIS FOR URBAN
DEVELOPMENT
YASH SHAH
 Geographic Information System (GIS) is for performing
detailed analysis of spatial information and solving complex
problems. Traditional GIS data is based on mapping in two
dimensions, an x and y-value, which can be limiting in some
applications. Utilizing 3D GIS software lets users engage with
data from a whole new perspective that results in more
nuanced insights and detailed visualizations.
YASH SHAH
GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM (GIS)
 GIS or Geographic Information System is a computer-based
framework for gathering, managing, and analyzing
geographical data.
 GIS can be used to analyze spatial locations and convert
layers of visualizations and information using maps and 3D
scenes to create valuable data.
 GIS has proven to be valuable among businesses and decision-
makers in environmental science, realty, manufacturing,
public safety, petroleum, mining, and education.

 Smart cities, on one hand present a substantial growth
opportunity in the coming years while on the other offers various
challenges as well.
 Smart city projects are rather complex with residential and
commercial spaces supported by an infrastructure backbone for
power, roads, water, drainage and sewage i.e. a virtual living and
breathing city.
 A critical success factor is a need for a common technology
platform to enable integration, coordination and synergistic
functioning of different participants of the smart city ecosystem.
 A centralized information system based on GIS (Geographical
Information System) provides an IT framework which integrates
not only every stakeholder but also every aspect of smart city
processes – starting from conceptualization, planning, and
development to maintenance.
YASH SHAH
GIS FOR SMART CITIES
 3D GIS brings enhanced depth into data collection and
analysis by incorporating a z-value into mapping. Most
commonly, that means including elevation data, but users
have many options for adding layers of information.
 For instance, a map might include a dimension based on the
concentrations of certain chemicals and minerals or which
parcels of land are best suited for development. Working with
three dimensions, GIS professionals can often apply their
findings to address real-world issues with greater accuracy.
 While 3D models are more difficult to create and maintain
than 2D ones, there are myriad 3D GIS applications where this
technology is greatly beneficial.
YASH SHAH
WHAT IS 3D GIS?
 The 3D-GIS in the Cloud main purpose is to evaluate the
use-efficiency of both existing and planned spatial
space.
 The application is an information-based decision
making tool used when designing regional or
neighborhood plans, or when considering regulatory and
incentive strategies.
 The application creates a detailed Smart 3D City model
of both above and below ground structures and features.
 The model includes maps and imagery that are placed
on their exact spatial location based on their position
and elevation information.

THESE FIVE EXAMPLES DEMONSTRATE HOW
AN INVESTMENT IN 3D GIS MODELING CAN
GENERATE ADDED VALUE:
 Cities have a way of growing to encompass previously under- or
undeveloped areas in a process often called urbanization or
urban sprawl.
 There are many reasons behind urban sprawl, including a desire
to build improved infrastructure, affordable land or tax rates, or
overcrowding inside the city. Urban sprawl can have a major
impact on people who decide to leave the city as well as those
who remain.
 For example, as residents move farther away from the city
center, infrastructure such as roads or public transportation
systems must accommodate their commutes, and traffic can
lead to higher rates of air pollution.
 To minimize the negative impacts of urban sprawl and increased
development, it’s important for city planners to determine way to
grow urban areas.
YASH SHAH
1. CITY PLANNING
 Urban development needs to take into consideration today’s
requirements, potential changes in demand and the long-term
effects of building upward and outward.
 3D GIS can help planners visualize what their proposed
changes will look like and predict the outcomes for current
residents and future generations.
 A 3D model spotlighted building information, aerial photos,
energy performance, air pollution, lieder elevation data, noise
and traffic.
 The wide range of integrated information allowed architects,
planning engineers and others to collaborate effectively. As
the district develops further, the 3D model will help future
planners with energy and environmental modeling and guide
public participation initiatives.

YASH SHAH
 Building information modeling (BIM) is a technology that
generates digital representations of facilities and relevant
processes.
 BIM has given facilities managers the ability to closely review
structures, beginning with the construction planning phase.
 Used in conjunction with 3D GIS data, BIM can help create robust
building management plans and allow for more detailed analysis.
 BIM and 3D GIS can also come together to support
the preservation and restoration of historical buildings.
 The combination of BIM and GIS provides the necessary know-
how to build a robust model.
 The combination of 3D GIS and BIM can help produce error-free
building management plans that would eventually allow for a
more detailed analysis of data.
YASH SHAH
2. BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING
 Its critical for planners to understand the factors that affect
construction and maintenance for shipping ports, fisheries,
mineral mining operations and wilderness preservation areas.
 Responsible coastal development must be informed by
underwater topography, local vegetation and predictions for the
long-term environmental impact.
 Resource planning systems that draw on GIS can provide
insights into the economic, environmental and cultural
results of activities along the coast.
 When preparing for the extraction of resources on the
coastline, organizations benefit from synthesizing information
like:
Findings from 3D GIS mapping that suggest the likely outcomes
of dredging material in the water
Lidar topographical surveys
Data sets from past extraction activities
Trends in coastal change YASH SHAH
3. COASTAL MODELING AND ANALYSIS
 Planning a wind farm requires a detailed analysis of an
environment and the potential effects of the structures.
 By using 3D GIS modeling, planners and other stakeholders
can get a better idea of the impact from wind farm
development on wildlife and people.
 For example, when assessing possible wind farm locations in
two dimensions, a bird’s migratory path might make a
location seem inaccessible.
 However, reviewing that same space using 3D GIS data, may
reveal that the elevation of birds’ flight paths and the height
of the wind farm are compatible.
YASH SHAH
4. WIND FARM ASSESSMENT
 3D GIS can help people and societies better handle natural
disasters. In case of a calamity, detailed mapping may give a
broad idea to disaster response teams by making them aware
of the environment they would be dealing in.
 This would also include providing information like:
Proper coordinates of the point of action and the best route to
reach
Detail of the area including the type of terrain
An alternative route for proper evacuation
YASH SHAH
5. DISASTER RESPONSE
 Site Selection & Land Acquisition
 Environmental / Legal Compliance
 Planning, Design & Visualization
 Construction & Project Management
 Sales & Marketing
 Operations & Reporting
 A 3D geographic information system can be used to create a
realistic simulation of a project, environment, or critical
situation.
YASH SHAH
GIS APPLICATIONS FOR SMART CITIES
 Providing the ability to easily understand complex urban planning
regulation as 3D visualization.
 Offers comparison capabilities between existing and planned
buildings to a specific area regulation.
 Create realistic simulations of proposed urban development plans and
test-case different scenarios.
 Support local governments in achieving planning consents with
communities and industries.
 Ability to visualize and analyze the volumetric shadow created by
planned structures in consideration with the time of day.
 Thorough analysis of data and impacts not achievable in a 2D
environment.
 Easily visualize how proposed urban development plans change the
city skyline and evaluate its impacts.
 Create realistic 3D flythrough animations of any scenario such as
touring within a proposed project or to evaluate situational impacts.

YASH SHAH
VARIOUS SOFTWARE USED FOR 3D GIS
 3D GIS provide urban designers and planners with a useful
tool for modeling and analysis.
 GIS is an ideal technology that has the ability to scale across
any expanse, from the individual asset within a building to a
virtually global context tying all aspects of a Smart City
planning and development.
 The 3D GIS application was developed in order to evaluate
urban space efficiently and to provide information about
urban planning to local communities.
 This application enables users to visualize complicated urban
planning information in the 3D way, to evaluate the allowable
capacity of the block and to simulate building plans.
 With visualization and analysis capability, 3D GIS is
considered a powerful tool to solve various issues which
modern cities confront. YASH SHAH

3D GIS for urban development

  • 1. YASH SHAH YASH SHAH 3D GIS FOR URBAN DEVELOPMENT
  • 3.  Geographic Information System (GIS) is for performing detailed analysis of spatial information and solving complex problems. Traditional GIS data is based on mapping in two dimensions, an x and y-value, which can be limiting in some applications. Utilizing 3D GIS software lets users engage with data from a whole new perspective that results in more nuanced insights and detailed visualizations. YASH SHAH GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM (GIS)
  • 4.  GIS or Geographic Information System is a computer-based framework for gathering, managing, and analyzing geographical data.  GIS can be used to analyze spatial locations and convert layers of visualizations and information using maps and 3D scenes to create valuable data.  GIS has proven to be valuable among businesses and decision- makers in environmental science, realty, manufacturing, public safety, petroleum, mining, and education. YASH SHAH
  • 6.  Smart cities, on one hand present a substantial growth opportunity in the coming years while on the other offers various challenges as well.  Smart city projects are rather complex with residential and commercial spaces supported by an infrastructure backbone for power, roads, water, drainage and sewage i.e. a virtual living and breathing city.  A critical success factor is a need for a common technology platform to enable integration, coordination and synergistic functioning of different participants of the smart city ecosystem.  A centralized information system based on GIS (Geographical Information System) provides an IT framework which integrates not only every stakeholder but also every aspect of smart city processes – starting from conceptualization, planning, and development to maintenance. YASH SHAH GIS FOR SMART CITIES
  • 7.  3D GIS brings enhanced depth into data collection and analysis by incorporating a z-value into mapping. Most commonly, that means including elevation data, but users have many options for adding layers of information.  For instance, a map might include a dimension based on the concentrations of certain chemicals and minerals or which parcels of land are best suited for development. Working with three dimensions, GIS professionals can often apply their findings to address real-world issues with greater accuracy.  While 3D models are more difficult to create and maintain than 2D ones, there are myriad 3D GIS applications where this technology is greatly beneficial. YASH SHAH WHAT IS 3D GIS?
  • 8.  The 3D-GIS in the Cloud main purpose is to evaluate the use-efficiency of both existing and planned spatial space.  The application is an information-based decision making tool used when designing regional or neighborhood plans, or when considering regulatory and incentive strategies.  The application creates a detailed Smart 3D City model of both above and below ground structures and features.  The model includes maps and imagery that are placed on their exact spatial location based on their position and elevation information. YASH SHAH
  • 10. YASH SHAH THESE FIVE EXAMPLES DEMONSTRATE HOW AN INVESTMENT IN 3D GIS MODELING CAN GENERATE ADDED VALUE:
  • 11.  Cities have a way of growing to encompass previously under- or undeveloped areas in a process often called urbanization or urban sprawl.  There are many reasons behind urban sprawl, including a desire to build improved infrastructure, affordable land or tax rates, or overcrowding inside the city. Urban sprawl can have a major impact on people who decide to leave the city as well as those who remain.  For example, as residents move farther away from the city center, infrastructure such as roads or public transportation systems must accommodate their commutes, and traffic can lead to higher rates of air pollution.  To minimize the negative impacts of urban sprawl and increased development, it’s important for city planners to determine way to grow urban areas. YASH SHAH 1. CITY PLANNING
  • 12.  Urban development needs to take into consideration today’s requirements, potential changes in demand and the long-term effects of building upward and outward.  3D GIS can help planners visualize what their proposed changes will look like and predict the outcomes for current residents and future generations.  A 3D model spotlighted building information, aerial photos, energy performance, air pollution, lieder elevation data, noise and traffic.  The wide range of integrated information allowed architects, planning engineers and others to collaborate effectively. As the district develops further, the 3D model will help future planners with energy and environmental modeling and guide public participation initiatives. YASH SHAH
  • 14.  Building information modeling (BIM) is a technology that generates digital representations of facilities and relevant processes.  BIM has given facilities managers the ability to closely review structures, beginning with the construction planning phase.  Used in conjunction with 3D GIS data, BIM can help create robust building management plans and allow for more detailed analysis.  BIM and 3D GIS can also come together to support the preservation and restoration of historical buildings.  The combination of BIM and GIS provides the necessary know- how to build a robust model.  The combination of 3D GIS and BIM can help produce error-free building management plans that would eventually allow for a more detailed analysis of data. YASH SHAH 2. BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING
  • 15.  Its critical for planners to understand the factors that affect construction and maintenance for shipping ports, fisheries, mineral mining operations and wilderness preservation areas.  Responsible coastal development must be informed by underwater topography, local vegetation and predictions for the long-term environmental impact.  Resource planning systems that draw on GIS can provide insights into the economic, environmental and cultural results of activities along the coast.  When preparing for the extraction of resources on the coastline, organizations benefit from synthesizing information like: Findings from 3D GIS mapping that suggest the likely outcomes of dredging material in the water Lidar topographical surveys Data sets from past extraction activities Trends in coastal change YASH SHAH 3. COASTAL MODELING AND ANALYSIS
  • 16.  Planning a wind farm requires a detailed analysis of an environment and the potential effects of the structures.  By using 3D GIS modeling, planners and other stakeholders can get a better idea of the impact from wind farm development on wildlife and people.  For example, when assessing possible wind farm locations in two dimensions, a bird’s migratory path might make a location seem inaccessible.  However, reviewing that same space using 3D GIS data, may reveal that the elevation of birds’ flight paths and the height of the wind farm are compatible. YASH SHAH 4. WIND FARM ASSESSMENT
  • 17.  3D GIS can help people and societies better handle natural disasters. In case of a calamity, detailed mapping may give a broad idea to disaster response teams by making them aware of the environment they would be dealing in.  This would also include providing information like: Proper coordinates of the point of action and the best route to reach Detail of the area including the type of terrain An alternative route for proper evacuation YASH SHAH 5.
