2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Working Title:
The artist I am creating the music video for is called
Audience:
My main audience I am aiming for with be the age group I am within, this is because the age 16-21
is the main range of this type of music, and the most popular type of music varies with the age.
The main genres of my music for this age are hip-hop with bits of rap and indie. This type of music
is what I am using in the music video. The gender of my audience will mainly be males. This is
because of the main artists surrounding this type of music is mainly males because of the rapping
style. This is because generally in this type of music males enjoy it more for some reason; this may
be because of how the industry works. The social status of my product will be for the lower clas s.
This is because it will be free to watch and listening to using a free site called YouTube or using
the website and application soundcloud. The psychographic of my product will be balanced
because it’s a perfect fit because of the specification of a balanced psychographic. I chose this
because it means the audience will be open minding and will try and understand the music and
product with enjoyment. My project will be appealing to my audience because the song is catchy
and sounds different and unique rather than being same to the normal soundcloud rapper. This
means it will aim towards someone that wants to hear something new and different. In the future I
will be using this audience for my research, I will do this by having a variety of people listening and
watching my video to find out what they enjoy about it and how I can make improves that will make
it better and more of a professional design and product.
Rationale (approx. 100 words)
I have gained many skills through the years of my production from secondary school and from the
levels of creative media. I have gained a large amount of skills within the use of adobe programs,
these programs are photoshop and InDesign, there are also other programs that I use but the
biggest development are in the edit and adding of clips with cutting and workings. I have
developed knowledge within the use of premier pro, I have done this because of my video game
production and also other productions, such as adverts and radio broadcasts. The knowledge I
have got from this has helped me with my photoshop, this is because I can now use photoshop
with accuracy and professionalism. This knowledge has helped me with my product, this is
because I can now design and create my work with confidence and quality. I have decided to
produce this product in this way because of what I have done in previous projects. This is because
I have gained skills from then that I can use, I have used this to my advantage to make it better
and clearer. This will directly impact my work for the better and will be shown in my product.
Project Concept (approx. 200 words)
My concept from what I want from this music video is a different and a creative concept, this is
because I want different shots that will make the music video unique and different. I will do this by
filming in different locations such as building and filming some of the video upside down with water
pouring so it seems the water is rising. My interpretation of the song is that It is a creative mind
field for video production, this is because of the unique sound track. Through the center of the
track there is a chill and vibe moment. I wanted to do some running shots with cameras
backwards. These shots are adding to the concept of my different and unique design, I feel that
this is a very good idea because it will make my product professional and different to everyone
else’s. this will make my product stand out. The research I will need for this will be music videos for
the type of music I will be using for this product, these music videos that I will be researching will
be unique and different to the regular popular ideas. This is because of the genre of music.

Production Techniques (approx. 150 words)
What specialist techniques do you need to consider? (e.g. green screen, Steadicam, post-
production, sound, etc)
Does this require any specialist equipment/training/demos?
What I want from my product is that it should be different. I want to use a rig for the camera shoots
filming the video so it can be sturdy and to a good standard of product, I will do this because it will
make the video more professional and cleaner. I also want to use different equipment such as
GoPros and a drone. We have all of these available at our use so I could make this happen and I
will because I want this music video to look well and to a good standard for my product. I also want
the style of the video to be a mix between a rap video and also indie style of music video. I will
want a lot of transitions in the editing side of things with some effects to make the recordings look
crisper and more effective. I feel like all of this an work very well for producing my work.
Evaluation (approx. 50 words)
How do you plan to evaluate the work? Reference conducting on-going evaluation and your final
self-reflection, analysing your work and its outcomes.
For my evaluation I will be using some of my audience to decided what they like about my product.
I will do this by using the surveys and also using the product to show to people an get what they
like and what they would improve to the product to make it better for the final product. This would
be good for my future in product because it shows me what to improve on and change for the final
product.
