TASK 1
Idea Generation and Research
RESEARCH
Our audience is predominantly 16-18 year old males
from York. Our audience also interact with lots of music
content. They listen to music, watch music videos and
interact with other content involving music. We are
creating a content social media platform for music,
why and how young people engage with it. How music
affects them and where this comes from. It will also look
at how young people react and engage with art. These
elements will be tangible and will connect with this
audience. We will make a space for them to enjoy this
content and share their thoughts and ideas.
IDEA GENERATION
IDEA GENERATION
After analysing all my ideas, I have decided that I will be
making the live band recording. I have chosen this idea
because it would appeal to my audience better than any
of the other ideas I had. This is because the live band idea
is with a local band, and we have identified the audience
as being more engaged with local bands. I will be using a
4-camera setup. I will have 3 static cameras and one
handheld camera. I want one static on the singer/
singers, one camera on a guitarist and one camera as a
wide shot to collect everything. I will then edit all the
shots together in time with the music and make a live
band show.
POTENTIAL TECHNIQUES TO
USE
Four camera setup
Three static cameras on tripods and one handheld camera
One wide camera on the whole band in the shot
One static camera on a guitarist
One static camera on the vocalists
One camera on a gimbal
Forward gimbal movements
Half orbit gimbal movements
Jib gimbal movements
Match the shots with the music and who is playing/singing
Crossfade and dip to black transitions
Logo at the start and end
CONVENTIONS OF YOUR
CHOSEN FORMAT/GENRE
YOU ARE WORKING TO
Live Indie Music performance with a 5-person band. 2
vocalists, 2 guitarists and 1 bass. Indie artists typically like
performing live and showing off their own style and brand.
They typically wear bright, stylish clothing that stands out
and shows them off. Live performances also promote the
artist as people. It will make the audience realise how natural
they are and that they can sing well and sound the same
when live. It takes a lot of charisma and skill to be able to
play an instrument and still perform so the live performance
option highlights artists talents in a good way and can
therefore attract their target audience. There are multiple
shot types commonly used in videos like this. For example,
extreme close ups are commonly used as they introduce us
to the artist and band members. This shot may be used to
highlight the emotions the band are trying to convey to the
audience. Wide shots are also commonly used to show the
setting of the video and give us a clear view of the artists
and their outfits. This is important as a lot of artists are seen
as stylish and trendy. This shot also shows the location to
SUMMARY
OPPORTUNITIES OF MY IDEA
My idea has the potential to target a high number of
niche audience members and can reach out to a wider
audience interested in music or live events. This idea also
gives me the chance to work in a new, professional
environment and with different types of people. This will
help develop my professional working standard and help
me develop as a creator. Another opportunity I am
gaining from this idea is the chance to conduct and
operate a multicamera setup. I will be orchestrating a 4-
camera setup in this production. There will be 3 static
cameras and one handheld camera. I have the
responsibility of placing the three static cameras in prime
positions and in charge of operating the handheld
camera, which will be on a gimbal. Overall, this idea has
many good opportunities that can help me develop my
industry knowledge and work.
SUMMARY
RESTRICTIONS TO MY IDEA
Some restrictions to my idea could be that there is only
one handheld camera operator. This could mean that I
don’t have a massive variety of handheld shots to use but
I am able to cut to a static to fill the gaps. Another
restriction I could have with my idea is mistakes/
problems. Because the production is live, me and the
band only have one attempt. Due to this there is lots of
things that could go wrong. For example, a camera
problem could occur which leaves me with a minimum
number of camera angles and shots. I would have to work
harder to get all the band members on video at the
correct time. The band could also make a mistake or have
a technical issue which could ruin the video.
FINAL IDEA – RATIONALE
I have chosen this idea because I think it is a good way to
target my audience and it is good, compatible content for
our platform. I think I will also be unique content for the
platform that has never been seen before. I have skills in
live production work as I have been a camera operator on
multiple different events. I have worked on a food and
agricultural festival as a camera operator, and I have also
worked on other live music events. I have also used a
gimbal on live events to get different shot types and more
stable footage. The skills I have learned from these events
makes this the best sector for me to work in. I am looking
forward to learning some new skills such as, different
more intrusive camera angles with the use of go pros and
longer lenses. I also want to explore more camera
movement with the use of a gimbal. I want to explore
more gimbal movements and broaden my camera skills.
FINAL IDEA – CREATIVE
CONCEPT
I want to make a live music video of a band playing in a
dark theatre like location with tube lighting strips and
pyros. I want the low light and shadow look as it will be
perfect for the band's genre. I want each bad member to
be in their own bay in a semi circle. The bays will be
marked by a tube light at each side with an amplifier in
each bay. I think this will look aesthetic and will be
pleasing on the eye for the audience.

CONCEPT BOARD
CONCEPT BOARD
DISCUSSION/EXPLANATION
My concept board has lots of similar themes throughout
the whole board. The theme is easily identifiable from my
concept board. The theme throughout is live band music.
There is also lots of mise-en-scene elements included in
my concept board. For example, there are images with
smoke and pyros in them. There are also images of
lighting such as tube lights. The lighting is pictured going
through the smoke and making a nice-looking set. I want
to incorporate all these elements in my product and get
the feel and theme shown in this concept board.
SHOT LIST - VIDEO
I will not need a shot list as I am recording a live
production so my shots will be mostly improvised. I can
only plan a couple of static shots. One shot will be a wide
angle on the whole band. I will also have a static camera
on one of the guitarists. Finally, I will have a static camera
on the two vocalists. The rest of the shots will be in a ‘run
and gun’ style and not planned in detail.
AUDIO AND OTHER PLANNING
Audio will be recorded by the bands music team
externally. They will record each band members
instrument/voice and then take the track away and edit it.
The team will then send me the music and I will edit my
footage with the audio.
