Production Process Evaluation
Contextual
Positives
Having a contextual PowerPoint has allowed me to gather lots
of different types of research early on. I was able to identify
different practitioners, existing products and tutorials that I
would be researching. This helped me gather my thoughts and
plans for my research PowerPoint. The contextual PowerPoint
also helped me to express my views and reasons for why I
chose this project and what pushed me to do it. It also gave
me the opportunity to show and touch on my development
throughout the year. I was able to talk about where I started,
the dream and goals I had and how I have manged to improve
and get to where I am now. Being able to discuss this helped
to really put my project into perspective and gave it a
purpose.
Research
Relevant
practitioners
I researched 2 relevant practitioners.
They were both video production
companies that specialise in corporate,
commercial and live broadcasting videos.
I chose these two companies to research
because they had lots of pre-production,
production and post-production methods
that were professional and valuable to
learn. I wanted to learn how these
mainstream companies, find clients,
produce work and share the work. All
these points helped me build a better
structure and gave me a good insight into
how these things are handled in the real
world.
Existing Products
I researched one existing product. It was an after
movie made by a video production company
called Final Kid Films. Final Kid Films is a film
production company based in Amsterdam,
Netherlands. They specialise in emotive
filmmaking all over the world. I wanted to
research the after movie that they made
because the video looked sleek, powerful,
visually sound and professional. The video was
for the Ultra festival in Miami America. It was a
live production which is one of the main reasons
I researched into it. I was able to see how they
operated around the festival, how they worked
with the crowds and what it takes to make a
production on that scale. I used lots of different
techniques from this video in my work.
Venue/ Location
research
I researched a few different venues and locations for this
project. I worked with my client to decide the choice of
venue. We both wanted a location that would match the
style of his music. This meant we wanted a warm, intimate
vintage style location. I put lots of mind maps and images
together and we decided that a room with an exposed
brick wall would be perfect. The location was easily
accessible and available to us whenever we wanted it. I
had planned everything in plenty of time and had a solid
production schedule, therefore we could pencil a concrete
date in. It was an extremely good thing to research location
choices as I could match lots of different venues and match
them to the style of my client.
Kit Research
I did a lot of kit research and kit testing during the
research stage of my project. This was because I planned
on using lots of kit that I had never used properly before.
I watched lots of informative, step by step guides and
learned lots of different techniques and things I could do
with the different pieces of kit. The main piece of kit I
focused on was the Atem Mini Pro. This piece of
equipment was one of the biggest keys to my project's
success. I was able to learn everything I needed to know
about it. I had a drive to learn this piece of kit not just for
my final project but because it is what I want to do in the
future.
Planning
Production
schedule
My planning document covered
everything. I had a detailed generic
production schedule and a detailed shoot
schedule. These schedules helped me to
keep on track with where I was
throughout the production and if I was
ahead or behind schedule. The shoot day
schedule was imperative as I knew the
times that I was shooting from till and
what I was shooting when. Overall, It
helped me keep on track with everything
and helped me keep a strong structure.
Location Reece
I did lots of location scouting and
planning and I was able to find the
perfect venue. During planning I wrote
another important document that is
used lots in the professional world. It
was there to check I had all the vital
necessities for the shoot, safety issues,
permissions and site contact details.
Call sheet
A call sheet is one of the most
important documents for a
shoot as it is sent to all the crew
and contributors. It has all the
relevant location information
and call times for each role. It is
a heavily used document in the
professional working world, so it
was good to get used to using
them regularly.
Kit
I planned and listed all the kit I needed in my planning
document. This was so I knew exactly what I needed to
use and book out. I was able to follow my list and book
out the appropriate kit. This was a strong point in my
planning.
Layout
plan
I also made a layout plan in my
planning document. This outlined
the dimensions of the room and
the layout of everything. I was
able to place each camera in a
position, label where the lighting
was, pin where my desk was and
any other things that needed
highlighting. I did however have a
negative to this plan. I did this
brief layout plan very early on,
before I was certain on the
location. A few things changed
and I didn’t end up fully using
this layout plan. Next time I will
do this brief layout plan but also
do a final detailed plan as well.
FMP overall management
Time Management
Overall, I thought that my time management was good. In the past I have
struggled with keeping on top of things. For example, I would spend too much
time on one task and put too many hours into making it perfect. Due to this I
would forget about other things that needed doing. This project I actively
followed the schedule and if I hadn't finished something I put extra hours,
outside of college, into it. This has helped me keep on top of my work very
effectively.
Technical
Qualities Audio
I used lots of different technical qualities in this project. For example, I worked a lot with audio
and audio balancing effects. One of the things that went wrong was the audio that I shot live
was slightly distorted as it was a level too loud. This unfortunately led to some slight peaking in
a couple of the belty songs. It isn't too noticeable, but I wanted to fix it the best way I could. To
do this I used an audio peak limiter which works by capping the audio beyond the set decibel.
This took most of the noticeable clipping out of the audio. I was left with a slight bit of audio
peaking at the end, but I had to deal with that as there was nothing else, I could do. After
troubleshooting I believe the reason, I can't fix it is because the audio goes through 2 separate
recorders that were level for them but too loud for the vision mixer causing a clip in the audio.
The lesson I have learned from this is that you can never check enough times. In the future I will
always do an extra check even if I am happy with what I hear at the time.
Aesthetic
Qualities
Audience Appeal
I think that I have successfully appealed to my clients target audience and included
many elements that would attract them to interact with this project. The audience will
interact well with the aesthetic qualities that I previously spoke about. My client's
audience are broad and come from every different type of online platform. He also
has lots of fans that have seen him in person at gigs, so I was able to get a profile on
the audience and see what they interact with the most. The videos where premiered
as live videos on my client's social media. This meant that the audience could watch
him performing in a 'Live' environment. Most audiences and most fans ,in general,
prefer watching live music so I believe I have used this to target them positively. Using
these techniques, I believe I was successfully able to target the audience well and
intrigue them.
Peer
Feedback
Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
– The location was very suited and perfect for the
artist.
– The camera angles worked very well and look very
nice.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– Maybe some minor attention to sound
design and peaking.
Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
– The whole product looked very professional from the initial setting of
the "work place," the interaction with the subject Joe Doonan who
was put at ease and knew exactly what was required to the actual
filming of the set. I have seen the final product fully edited and again
it looks like a professional piece of work. I am sure the subject is
extremely pleased, and I do know that he has used the product on his
media pages.
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
• This is a tough one because like I have said this looks like a
professional piece of work to me, but if I must find an improvement
it would be some very slight peaking issues in the sound on one of
the songs. I really am being "picky" here!
Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
• The images and audio were brilliant.
• The lighting was very nice and intimate.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
• I would like to have seen another camera
angle.
Feedback 4
• What did you like about the product?
– I really enjoyed watching the performance, I thought the
lighting made the product feel more intimate and matched
the style of the artist.
– I liked the moving camera angle as it
kept you engrossed with the artist.
• What improvements could have been made to the
product?
– I enjoyed the whole product overall and there was not
much I can think to criticise. If there was one thing, then it
would be the distorted audio in one or two songs
Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
– I agree that I needed to pay a bit more attention towards
the sound peaking issues.
– I agree that it did look professional and there was a lot of
pro industry elements to it.
– I agree that the lighting gave off a very professional look
and a good aesthetic appeal.
• What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
– I disagree with the fact that there needed to be another
camera angle. This is because I believe it would have been
way to overcrowded and unnecessary.
Peer Feedback Summary
To summarise, my peer feedback form has been incredibly helpful. I got four
different feedback forms from people, and they were all helpful for future
work. Some of the points I agree with. For example, I need to work on my
audio a lot more. I need to be able to spot when something is peaking or
distorting in the video. This point was mentioned three times in three
different forms. I did however disagree with one of the points made. This was
that I should have added another camera angle. I think that I had enough
angles to keep the audience entertained and to give the client enough
coverage. If I added another camera angle I feel as though it would have been
too crowded, but it would have also been too much to think about. I agreed
with all the positive points such as the use of different camera angles, the
lighting and the professional workplace environment. All these positive
elements helped build the product and made it look and feel like a
professional production.
