Stage 2
Research + Experiments
Carter smith
Production techniques research
• Research potential production techniques you might want to use or
feel would be most appropriate – these can be related to camera,
editing, story, sound, etc
• You should look at a minimum of 3 related products in your research.
• You should collect clips/still images/how to guides/etc that might
help you. When watching scenes from films, etc you could also ask
potential target audience what they think.
• You may need to add extra slides!
• With each technique you should assess whether you can use it or
how you might employ or why you may want to disregard it
completely
• Always think about your investigations links to your intentions and
production!
Product 1
I like the effect of using the lines in
each frame for a spilt second, it
draws your eyes to location part
you are needed to look and looks
very visually appealing and good
for the audience watching. I will
want to use this in my product
because it works very well for the
type of music I am doing and will
be doing for the final product. I also
like it because not all music videos
use this technique.
I also want to do some zoomed in scenes to make
the skateboard look more effective for the style of
flow from the music I have chosen to use. The
skateboard works very well when its zoomed in
because you can see the rhythm of the song through
the video. I also like the skateboard because it fits
for the type of indie chilled out music. This fits
perfect for song melody and style.
I have decided to put this
image of one of my favorite
songs in this because it has
my favorite scene. This scene
is where Joji(artist) is against
a bus shelter glass side with
the rain poring down, I very
much like this scene and want
to include a scene like this in
my final product because I
feel that It works well with
the song I have chosen.
Product 2
I like this side profile of this scene
because it makes the main artist
and also the background and
surrounding stand out to the
audience watching and keeps
your attention on the music
video rather than just have the
song playing without any visual
meaning. This is because the
music gives a meaning to the
song on its own.
I like this image of the main artist in the central part of
the music video and the effect of having the background
blurred so the main image that is central is brought to the
surface and stands out more than anything in the shot. I
also like the effect of it being a old vintage camera role,
this is because it will make the video more unique and
different to other peoples work.
I like the way on this image
of the music video works
with the overlapping video
clips and images, this is
because I feel that it works
good for the type of music I
am thinking about
producing. This is because
it is different and works
very well to a professional
standard.
Product 3
I like this angle of the image
because it makes the main
artist stand out, I also like the
way the camera is positioned.
This is because it makes the
artist face down and the
combination of the artist and
the sky makes them stand
out and seems to be unique
and professional.
I like the scene of the artist being used as a figure in the
dark and I feel that it works well with the mood of the
song. I would like to use this technique because I feel
that it fits well with the type of music I am using for my
product experiment and also my final product. I also like
the zoomed in image of the artist because I feel that this
works well so you can see the artist you want to see.
I like the scene of this song
where the central part of the
image is the main singer, this
works very well with the clothes
she is wearing to make the
ground and the background
stand out. The sky with the out
fit makes the scene stand out
and looks very good. I want to
use this technique in my
product.
Genre and artist breakdown
• Think about the conventions of music video and which of these you
feel are the most appropriate for you video and why
• Think about the genre characteristics for your chosen artist – how do
you plan to employ these?
• Which techniques and styles do you think fans of your chosen genre
prefer? What should you expect to see in that type of music video?
• Use the following slides to show your ideas and explain these using
good illustrative examples – this is where your research and
explorations should start. Remember to consider the aspects we
looked at in class [and the academic things from Goodwin, etc].
Conventions
• Music videos include many shots for the taking of recordings and also single
shot images. This is to emphasis the image of the artist and the location with
the creative aspect. The shots will also show how the song with go with the
recordings, this can be from the way the video is shot or just the way the
artist is lip sinking the audio to the video. Using tilts and pans work very well
for the product, it makes the product unique and look very professional. This
is why music videos can look very good.
• Another thing that makes a music video good with conventions is when
people use the insight of Mise-en-scene, this is because sticking by this
means the clips will be crisp and clean without any mistakes of the props or
the surroundings. This idea works very well for professional music videos
because It gives the audience to see what the back story is and what the
music video may infer.
Genre Chacteristics
• All genres have varieties of different characteristic, this is show in slow
music where the main genre is smooth/classic. This type of music is
slow and steads because of the main instruments used are slow and of
smooth nature. This means the music video will be dark coloured
without any exciting scenes. Genres such as rock and heavy metal seem
to use a lot of graphic and hard scenes. This is because of the intensity
of the music and how they want to shown in the public eye.
• Some genres are including dancing scenes and very bright and exciting
cuts that make the video jumpy and happy. These dance scenes are
usually for music genres for pop and hip-hop. This is because of the style
of the music. This type of music is very popular for the younger
generation because of partying and having fun.
Chosen approach/justification
• My main approach to this product is that I want it to be different and
unique, I also want it to be seen and used in a way that may be clear
and clean. I want my approach of my research and my production to
be neat and understandable for the audience reading. I want the
music genre of this music video to be a mix of indie and rap, this is
because of the music video I have chosen for this final product.
• For my experiment I want the product to be different and add a lot of
different and unique effects to make it stand out and seem like a
good first attempt. With the research I have gained from the internet
and other places. I feel that I have a lot of information that can help
me.
Experiments
Camera/Editing/Audio Experiments
This is for you to evidence the filming and editing tests we did.
Be prepared to add extra slides.
You can add more experiments as you do them as the project progresses.
Experiment 1 - Process
• I used a variety of tools to produce my
product experiment, I used tools such as
cutting tools so I could match the video
clips with the overlay of the song that
way playing in the background until final
edit. I also used smoke overlays that I
blended with the screen effect so it could
be perfectly fitted. I also used effects
such as colour keys, I did this so I could
remove some colours that I didn’t need
in the final edit. I did this because it
makes it professional and clean.
Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you include in your final product?
• For my final product I want to Include the way I used the studio for all of my production, this is
because it gives me a chance to change my background and also the colours of the main
characters. For my final product I also want to include a variety of shots that I can editing
within the program of premier pro and also the use of after effects. This is because I want the
unique and different shots to be used for the editing and also for the final product. Within the
production use of premier pro it gives me the chance to change the background colour, the
size of the image and also the way the image looks. I also want to include the filming
techniques “mise en scene”, this is because it will make my production technique skilled but
also looking good for my final product. I feel that this will also be good because in future my
skills will be developed and finalised in certain skills. One large part of my production that I
want from my experiment is that I want to produce something with a lot of editing, this editing
will include colour keying and also background overlays.

2. research mv 2018

  • 1. Stage 2 Research + Experiments Carter smith
  • 2. Production techniques research • Research potential production techniques you might want to use or feel would be most appropriate – these can be related to camera, editing, story, sound, etc • You should look at a minimum of 3 related products in your research. • You should collect clips/still images/how to guides/etc that might help you. When watching scenes from films, etc you could also ask potential target audience what they think. • You may need to add extra slides! • With each technique you should assess whether you can use it or how you might employ or why you may want to disregard it completely • Always think about your investigations links to your intentions and production!
  • 3. Product 1 I like the effect of using the lines in each frame for a spilt second, it draws your eyes to location part you are needed to look and looks very visually appealing and good for the audience watching. I will want to use this in my product because it works very well for the type of music I am doing and will be doing for the final product. I also like it because not all music videos use this technique. I also want to do some zoomed in scenes to make the skateboard look more effective for the style of flow from the music I have chosen to use. The skateboard works very well when its zoomed in because you can see the rhythm of the song through the video. I also like the skateboard because it fits for the type of indie chilled out music. This fits perfect for song melody and style. I have decided to put this image of one of my favorite songs in this because it has my favorite scene. This scene is where Joji(artist) is against a bus shelter glass side with the rain poring down, I very much like this scene and want to include a scene like this in my final product because I feel that It works well with the song I have chosen.
  • 4. Product 2 I like this side profile of this scene because it makes the main artist and also the background and surrounding stand out to the audience watching and keeps your attention on the music video rather than just have the song playing without any visual meaning. This is because the music gives a meaning to the song on its own. I like this image of the main artist in the central part of the music video and the effect of having the background blurred so the main image that is central is brought to the surface and stands out more than anything in the shot. I also like the effect of it being a old vintage camera role, this is because it will make the video more unique and different to other peoples work. I like the way on this image of the music video works with the overlapping video clips and images, this is because I feel that it works good for the type of music I am thinking about producing. This is because it is different and works very well to a professional standard.
  • 5. Product 3 I like this angle of the image because it makes the main artist stand out, I also like the way the camera is positioned. This is because it makes the artist face down and the combination of the artist and the sky makes them stand out and seems to be unique and professional. I like the scene of the artist being used as a figure in the dark and I feel that it works well with the mood of the song. I would like to use this technique because I feel that it fits well with the type of music I am using for my product experiment and also my final product. I also like the zoomed in image of the artist because I feel that this works well so you can see the artist you want to see. I like the scene of this song where the central part of the image is the main singer, this works very well with the clothes she is wearing to make the ground and the background stand out. The sky with the out fit makes the scene stand out and looks very good. I want to use this technique in my product.
  • 6. Genre and artist breakdown • Think about the conventions of music video and which of these you feel are the most appropriate for you video and why • Think about the genre characteristics for your chosen artist – how do you plan to employ these? • Which techniques and styles do you think fans of your chosen genre prefer? What should you expect to see in that type of music video? • Use the following slides to show your ideas and explain these using good illustrative examples – this is where your research and explorations should start. Remember to consider the aspects we looked at in class [and the academic things from Goodwin, etc].
  • 7. Conventions • Music videos include many shots for the taking of recordings and also single shot images. This is to emphasis the image of the artist and the location with the creative aspect. The shots will also show how the song with go with the recordings, this can be from the way the video is shot or just the way the artist is lip sinking the audio to the video. Using tilts and pans work very well for the product, it makes the product unique and look very professional. This is why music videos can look very good. • Another thing that makes a music video good with conventions is when people use the insight of Mise-en-scene, this is because sticking by this means the clips will be crisp and clean without any mistakes of the props or the surroundings. This idea works very well for professional music videos because It gives the audience to see what the back story is and what the music video may infer.
  • 8. Genre Chacteristics • All genres have varieties of different characteristic, this is show in slow music where the main genre is smooth/classic. This type of music is slow and steads because of the main instruments used are slow and of smooth nature. This means the music video will be dark coloured without any exciting scenes. Genres such as rock and heavy metal seem to use a lot of graphic and hard scenes. This is because of the intensity of the music and how they want to shown in the public eye. • Some genres are including dancing scenes and very bright and exciting cuts that make the video jumpy and happy. These dance scenes are usually for music genres for pop and hip-hop. This is because of the style of the music. This type of music is very popular for the younger generation because of partying and having fun.
  • 9. Chosen approach/justification • My main approach to this product is that I want it to be different and unique, I also want it to be seen and used in a way that may be clear and clean. I want my approach of my research and my production to be neat and understandable for the audience reading. I want the music genre of this music video to be a mix of indie and rap, this is because of the music video I have chosen for this final product. • For my experiment I want the product to be different and add a lot of different and unique effects to make it stand out and seem like a good first attempt. With the research I have gained from the internet and other places. I feel that I have a lot of information that can help me.
  • 10. Experiments Camera/Editing/Audio Experiments This is for you to evidence the filming and editing tests we did. Be prepared to add extra slides. You can add more experiments as you do them as the project progresses.
  • 11. Experiment 1 - Process • I used a variety of tools to produce my product experiment, I used tools such as cutting tools so I could match the video clips with the overlay of the song that way playing in the background until final edit. I also used smoke overlays that I blended with the screen effect so it could be perfectly fitted. I also used effects such as colour keys, I did this so I could remove some colours that I didn’t need in the final edit. I did this because it makes it professional and clean.
  • 12. Reflection • What elements of your experiments will you include in your final product? • For my final product I want to Include the way I used the studio for all of my production, this is because it gives me a chance to change my background and also the colours of the main characters. For my final product I also want to include a variety of shots that I can editing within the program of premier pro and also the use of after effects. This is because I want the unique and different shots to be used for the editing and also for the final product. Within the production use of premier pro it gives me the chance to change the background colour, the size of the image and also the way the image looks. I also want to include the filming techniques “mise en scene”, this is because it will make my production technique skilled but also looking good for my final product. I feel that this will also be good because in future my skills will be developed and finalised in certain skills. One large part of my production that I want from my experiment is that I want to produce something with a lot of editing, this editing will include colour keying and also background overlays.

Editor's Notes
