Proposal client project

Working Title:
Expression
Audience:
My client wanted my project to appeal to an audience of 16-25 year olds so I designed my project
around the topic of mental health as there is a large portion of this audience that will experience
some form of mental health disorder so they would probably benefit the most from hearing about
mental health. I think that by involving people in this age range in my project it would be more
relatable to this audience as they’re hearing a story from someone that is a similar age to them.
Rationale
over the course of this this year I feel like I’ve grown my skills a lot from how I started the course
especially in how I produce and edit my videos. I’ve developed how I research and plan my
projects so that it improves the production of my projects and I’ve learnt how to properly use
techniques such as colour grading and various effects in Adobe premier. I’ve also branched out in
the types of the equipment I’ve been using such as Steadicam and shoulder mounts as it has
helped me to think differently about how I will film certain shots. For my FMP in the first year of the
course I started using different software such as Adobe audacity and garage band for creating and
improving the audio aspects of my project and I intend to do so in this project too. All of the skills
I’ve learnt so far should be useful in helping me create a video that achieves the requirements of
the client.
Project Concept
I’m going to make a 3-4 minute short video on mental health for teenagers/young adults. The video
will focus on an interview with a friend of mine who has struggled with anxiety and depression and
although the video will touch on how this has affected her life I want to mainly talk about way that
she’s been able to control it.
The video will have a secondary focus on art as my friend will be creating an abstract painting as I
interview them which I will adapt my video around in terms of editing and aesthetic. Once I’ve fully
edited the video I will create and film an art exhibition where the video I’ve made is projected onto
the painting that was created in the video.
I want the style of my video to feel very comforting and natural in it’s presentation as I want it to
encourage expression of mental health as something that should be talked about more often as I
think that it’s something that’s very easy for people to bottle up which can be unhealthy. To make
my video feel more natural I will film some footage of natural areas near where I live to add a
scenic quality to my video.
Production Techniques
To make video flow better I may use transitions which I have prepared for in my production
experiments, I think this would work when transitioning from shots of nature to shots of my artist
painting as I think it would make the change in environments less jarring than if it was a regular cut
as it may make the contrast less apparent. I will make a piece of music for the video in garage-
band as I think this would give me much more control in how the music links to the video while also
completely avoiding the risk of using any copy righted music. I will be colour grading my work in
post to make my video look more professional as well as bringing out the colours of the painting
and the different settings I’ll film in. I may need to use more than one camera while filming so I can
get still shots of the painting while filming moving shots with a second camera, this would reduce
the amount of shots I would need to set up while filming. I only have two days where I can film the
artist so I need to make them count by getting as much well made footage as possible within that
time.
Evaluation
At the end of each day I will create an entry for my production reflection, which will help me to have
a strong understanding of my thoughts and creative process at certain points of production, which
will be useful in my final evaluation. Once I have finished my project I will compare my work to pre-
existing and professional work as well as asking for feedback from my peers.
