Research
The strengths of my research were that I found similar existing products very easy due
to music videos being so prominent, this gave me a good advantage when gaining
inspiration or comparing my work to others. Another strength of my research was that I
was able to find hundreds of tutorials which taught me how to edit in certain styles and
how to make unique creative effects like datamoshing, I used this to my advantage by
spending lots of my time watching and teaching myself these editing techniques and to
then later implement them into my product. One more strength to my research was the
research I conducted as this proved to be give me an idea on what my audience is
looking for when watching my product, this allows me to tailor my product to my
audiences preferences in order to appeal to them more. The weaknesses of my
research were that I when evaluating the existing products it became very repetitive as
there is only so much to talk about, I feel like I could've improved this by looking at
more abstract music videos especially because I decided to change the style of my
music video and keep adding more ideas to make it more creative and unique. I feel like
this would've given me a better chance of explaining how I wanted my product to look
like and also given me more insight into different styles of music videos.
Planning
The strengths of my planning were that I had a lot of time to create a plan, this allowed me
to make detailed structures on potential products I could make. Using these draft/skeleton
structures of my product allowed me to refine all my skills in adobe premiere and also
helped me get an insight on what my product would look like, this meant I was able to add
or remove footage and editing techniques which I wasn’t too happy with. Another strength
of my planning was that breaking the structure of a music video down is very easy and
planning what and where certain shots would go during the chorus, bridge and verse was a
very simple task. This was very useful for me because it allowed me to have a set structure
to what and how I would create and go about creating my music video, I created things like
shot lists and style sheets which gave me a solid structure to follow when producing the
music video. One more strength of my planning was that finding images or editing
techniques that I intended to use wasn’t too hard as a lot of the abstract editing and shots I
wanted had been covered by editors or been involved in other music videos, this allowed me
to create my style sheet without much hassle and give me inspiration. However the
disadvantages of my planning were that it was hard to try and get what I wanted to make
onto paper and explain what I wanted to do along with my final product changing and
straying away from some of my plans. This effected my planning by making it a little unclear
to the reader what I was intending to create especially with the production set backs. I could
have improved this by constantly updating my planning to be up to date with the changes in
my product.
Time Management
My time management wasn’t very on point throughout creating this product, as soon as I got
to producing my product I spent a lot of time just working on my product and pushing the
time schedule further back due to the demands of my product and the technical issues I
faced when editing or filming especially when trying to get light trail shots which ended up
being a complete failure. I ended up completing my product just short of my deadline making
it hard for me to complete my product reflection and evaluation in as much detail as I would
like, I think that with a just a little extra time my product could have been improved greatly
along with my product reflections and evaluation. This would've allowed me to spend more
time on adding some final touches and tweaking the end part of my product as I feel like I
could've added a few things here and there to just add that extra bit of quality to it. If I had
more time to spend on my product I would have done more datamoshing to my footage as I
intended and added more footage to replace the lyrics as I feel they dragged out for too long.

A$AP MOB – Yamborghini High
Similarities Differences
The similarities of these products are that
they're both music videos featuring
abstract editing.
Both videos feature datamoshing and
distorted looks which is very uncommon
for music videos.
Both videos have unique/abstract colours
used throughout the video which makes
the raw footage seem more creative.
They both cut or have some sort of editing
done to the beat of the music or to match
the music.
The differences in these products are that my
product was produced on a much lower budget
with less equipment and with less skills in
editing.
Another difference is that the Yamborghini High
music video features performances by the artists
and the main focus of the video is on the artists
making it very much a performance music video
whereas mine was more focused on the editing
and didn’t feature appearances from the band
due to scheduling issues.
One more difference is that my product features
the lyrics on screen for a good majority of the
production whereas the Yamborghini High music
video is more focused on the artists performing
Aesthetic Qualities
I Think my product does look good excluding the low render quality my product rendered in
on YouTube it proved to be what I intended to create and was like putting my own
preferences and ideas into a video. I think that my product was creative as I tried very hard to
make it unique and abstract by using unusual editing techniques which weren't too common
in other music videos such as datamoshing, distortion effects, discolouring and VHS effects.
The visuals that I liked the most in my production was probably the VHS, TV turn on/off,
colour distortion and datamoshing effects as I spent a lot of time creating those effects and
learning how to create them. If I were to do this project again I think I would improve the
quality that the video rendered in so it was 1080p, I would also shorten the length that the
lyrics are on screen and add more footage between those points, one more thing I would
improve would be the types of shots I got and add more creative shots to allow me to fully
take advantage of my editing techniques. There are many aesthetic strengths of my project,
such as the editing techniques I used like the light trails which I created in Adobe After Effects,
the VHS effect which I created by splitting the footage into 3 and changing the RGB values of
all three. The TV turn on/off effect which I created in Adobe premiere by using key frames to
change the size of the noise on the black video, The colour distortion which I did by adding
the same footage over each other and changing the colour and highlights along with the
opacity settings to “difference”. The datamoshing effects which I did by using avidemux and
deleting frames.
TV on/off effect – As you can see this is the TV on/off effect I
used in the beginning and end of my product, I used this
effect as I thought it would seem authentic to the VHS and
distortion effect I have already used in my product.
Datamoshing effect – Here you can see the datamoshing
effect I have used, as you can see from this image it seems
like the pixels are runing/bleeding down the screen. I used
this to make my product seem more abstract and creative.
Discolouration effect – In this screenshot you can see that
I have played with the colours of the footage making it
have a pink and purple look to it, I did this because I
thought it made the footage look more creative and
entertaining to watch along with it going to the beat of the
guitar or drums
VHS effect - As you can see in this screenshot I have used
the VHS effect on this footage as I thought it made the plain
footage more creative and also gave my whole project a very
retro styled inspired look.
Audience Appeal
I appealed to my target audience by making my
product accessible to all as it is free and
published online which is where my audience
watches the majority of their music videos, I
have also appealed to my audience by making a
music video which is to my audiences preferred
music taste which I managed to find out through
the survey monkey I conducted. I have also used
the knowledge gained from my survey to help
me appeal to my audience by making a visual
based music video which was my audiences
preferred style of music video, along with this I
have also focused on the editing of the music
video as my audience thought the editing was
more important compared to the shot types. To
appeal to my audience more I decided to take
the information from my survey on what makes
them want to watch a music video again and
tried to implement that into my project as my
audience said that the effects and creativity was
what would bring them back to watch the video
again.

Feedback
Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
– I think the product is very well made and shows a
large range of skills throughout the video. The use
of colour and distorted image suits the music and
works effectively with the song.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– Less lyrics used and more footage
Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
– I really liked how artistic and abstract the video was. I think if you showed someone this video and
they didn’t know it was an FMP project they would thing the video was a really 1980s music video.
The effects such as the raindrops on the camera lens and the shots of the forest mixed in with static
and flickering colouring visuals gives it a really good distorted VHS style effect.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
• I think there should have been more thing happening in the background during the parts were the lyrics
were appearing on the screen. The reason I say this is because they appear for quite a while at a time and
something happening in the background could increase its visual appeal for the audience so they are less
likely to get bored whilst watching it. Not that they would anyway as throughout the video the effect is
consistent and in some places is very interested with the variety of colours shifting and changing.
Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
– I like the 80 graphical distortion, which adds a nice transition for the
text.
– I like the colours applied to the video. Thee lack of many colours
(basically a few colours in a shot)together makes the video look like it
comes from the 80s
– The no signal ending is a perfect way to outro the video
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
• Maybe you could have made it 4:3 resolution to make it look like it came from the 80s
Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer
feedback?
• I agree that I should’ve used a wider range of shots when the lyrics were on screen
as it got a bit repetitive.
• What do you disagree with from your peer
feedback?
• I don’t really disagree with any of the points made from my peers as I think they
are very valid and were points I feel like I could have improved upon.
Peer Feedback Summary
The main changes I would make from my peer feedback would be to make my product
have more shots in the background whilst the lyrics were on screen and to possibly try
out a 4:3 resolution to make my video really seem like it’s more retro and authentic.
