STAGE 2
RESEARCH +
EXPERIMENTS
Your name here
 You MUST conduct a questionnaire/survey/interview or a combination of all three.
Summarise this and add in any other primary research you feel is appropriate
 https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/5R2CXVP
 The answers to my survey display a wide variety of opinions and preferences, and
show the distances between people when it comes to what they consider to be
quality entertainment. My questions are primarily qualitative in nature, as they ask
for more personalised information, dependent on the personality, interests, and
influences of the answerer. This helps me to gauge the reaction of my audience
and the appeal of the project relative to them, based on the genre, plot, and
execution of the finished production.
 Research viewing figures, sales figures, demographic and psychographic info.
Look up article, features or stories related to your potential audience
 https://io9.gizmodo.com/top-10-greatest-apocalyptic-comedies-of-all-time-
1689203033
 For this you should summarise your primary and secondary research, through this
you should then be able to produce an audience outline that you intend to target.
For this you could also produce an audience profile.
 Physically, the audience should probably be aged around 14 upwards, as the
product contains references to the apocalypse, which can be disturbing to
younger audiences. The product’s genre is comedy with a surrealist leaning,
grounded in a mundane, slice-of-life scenario that serves to contrast the
fictionalised nature of the setting. This would appeal to a late adolescent and early
to late adult demographic, as such mundane tasks would be commonplace in their
lives, empathizing with the struggle of what the main character is trying to
accomplish.
 Given your idea generation and your audience research, what sort of content
would you define as the appropriate. Consider issues of taste, certification [BBFC
might be a good starting point for this], etc. Look at what you’d like to include and
what you are allowed to include.
 Due to the project brief specifying that only a certain phrase can be spoken or
displayed for the entirety of the film, spoken language and the possible offensive
content that it can be used to describe is immediately ruled out, such as curse
words or insults. As such, most of the communication in the film occurs through
action, demeanour, and expression, whether it is between characters or towards
the audience. Because of these restrictions, I would prefer it if the actor portraying
the main character was comfortable with performing exaggeratedly and primarily
comedically, to display a wider array of emotions and character depth. In terms of
setting and plot, there is nothing obviously offensive about the material in
question, but could upset the audience regarding the bleak background of the film,
necessitating a focus on comedy and slice-of-life shenanigans.
 Research potential production techniques you might want to use
or feel would be most appropriate – these can be related to
camera, editing, story, sound, etc
 You should look at a minimum of 3 related products in your
research.
 You should collect clips/still images/how to guides/etc that might
help you. When watching scenes from films, etc you could also
ask potential target audience what they think.
 You will need to add extra slides!
 With each technique you should assess whether you can use it or
how you might employ or why you may want to disregard it
completely
 SLICE-OF-LIFE STORYTELLING
 A genre that focuses on stories in a mundane setting with rote, ordinary actions
and events at their core. Products that make use of this genre are generally of a
light-hearted or realistic disposition, and a large focus is placed on character
development and interaction, with the primary intention of making the situations
and characters in them as relatable and realistic as possible. A common technique
within this genre is the mundane fantastic, in which exceptional occurrences by
the audience’s standards are treated as commonplace and standard by the
characters.
 NOTABLE PRODUCTS – Due to the genre’s prevalence in Japanese
entertainment, a large amount of these are anime.

7_Fault_I%27m_Not_Popular!
 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GJ_Club
 LACK OF SPECIAL EFFECTS
 By disregarding any additional effects such as digital colouration, computer-made
graphics, or editorial techniques, the product becomes more grounded in reality,
further selling the premise to the audience as a possibility in mundane life. This
enhances the previously stated slice-of-life aesthetic, and furthermore establishes
the material shown in the product as a realistic and relatable scenario.
 NOTABLE PRODUCTS – By excluding the more flashy special effects from
production, it gives producers and directors more time and resources to funnel
into other aspects of the project.
 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_Blonde
 EXAGGERATION & EXPRESSION
 By having the actor portray a frustrated and emotionally expressive character, the
comedic value of the product is raised through the exaggerated and ridiculous
aura that is presented. Without this element, the final product would be too
sombre and pitiable, turning the audience off and misrepresenting the themes that
the creator is trying to convey.
 NOTABLE PRODUCTS – The products that rely on these techniques are
often based within an unlikely narrative, commonly incorporated unusual or
fantastical elements.

EXPERIMENTS
Camera/Editing/Audio Experiments
Be prepared to add extra slides
The test film shown to the left was
used to teach us how to competently
operate basic filming equipment and
the steps necessary to produce the
shots we needed, such as finding the
correct locations.
 What elements of your experiments will you include in your final
product?
 I believe that I will stick to the filming techniques displayed in the experiment,
which will help to sustain the down-to-earth nature of the project.
 Our editing experiment was
the same as the video
displayed above. It was used
to let us sharpen and review
what we already knew how to
do with the available
software.
 What elements of your experiments will you include in your final
product?
 Similarly, I do not believe that I will deviate from the norm in terms of the editing
stage, as it would strain the realism of the project.
This experiment was used to
instruct us on how to correctly
use audio equipment and how to
properly insert into a flowing
piece of film.
 What elements of your experiments will you include in your final
product?
 As the experiment shows, I do not think I will be needing to use non-diegetic audio
effects, as it would further negatively effect what the product is trying to convey,
which is a sense of relatability and normalcy.
 List all the potential constraints that might affect or limit your production, you
should consider issues from each of these categories:
 Time/Personnel/Cost/Technical/Location/Organisational

  • 2.  You MUST conduct a questionnaire/survey/interview or a combination of all three. Summarise this and add in any other primary research you feel is appropriate  https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/5R2CXVP  The answers to my survey display a wide variety of opinions and preferences, and show the distances between people when it comes to what they consider to be quality entertainment. My questions are primarily qualitative in nature, as they ask for more personalised information, dependent on the personality, interests, and influences of the answerer. This helps me to gauge the reaction of my audience and the appeal of the project relative to them, based on the genre, plot, and execution of the finished production.
  • 3.  Research viewing figures, sales figures, demographic and psychographic info. Look up article, features or stories related to your potential audience  https://io9.gizmodo.com/top-10-greatest-apocalyptic-comedies-of-all-time- 1689203033
  • 4.  For this you should summarise your primary and secondary research, through this you should then be able to produce an audience outline that you intend to target. For this you could also produce an audience profile.  Physically, the audience should probably be aged around 14 upwards, as the product contains references to the apocalypse, which can be disturbing to younger audiences. The product’s genre is comedy with a surrealist leaning, grounded in a mundane, slice-of-life scenario that serves to contrast the fictionalised nature of the setting. This would appeal to a late adolescent and early to late adult demographic, as such mundane tasks would be commonplace in their lives, empathizing with the struggle of what the main character is trying to accomplish.
  • 5.  Given your idea generation and your audience research, what sort of content would you define as the appropriate. Consider issues of taste, certification [BBFC might be a good starting point for this], etc. Look at what you’d like to include and what you are allowed to include.  Due to the project brief specifying that only a certain phrase can be spoken or displayed for the entirety of the film, spoken language and the possible offensive content that it can be used to describe is immediately ruled out, such as curse words or insults. As such, most of the communication in the film occurs through action, demeanour, and expression, whether it is between characters or towards the audience. Because of these restrictions, I would prefer it if the actor portraying the main character was comfortable with performing exaggeratedly and primarily comedically, to display a wider array of emotions and character depth. In terms of setting and plot, there is nothing obviously offensive about the material in question, but could upset the audience regarding the bleak background of the film, necessitating a focus on comedy and slice-of-life shenanigans.
  • 6.  Research potential production techniques you might want to use or feel would be most appropriate – these can be related to camera, editing, story, sound, etc  You should look at a minimum of 3 related products in your research.  You should collect clips/still images/how to guides/etc that might help you. When watching scenes from films, etc you could also ask potential target audience what they think.  You will need to add extra slides!  With each technique you should assess whether you can use it or how you might employ or why you may want to disregard it completely
  • 7.  SLICE-OF-LIFE STORYTELLING  A genre that focuses on stories in a mundane setting with rote, ordinary actions and events at their core. Products that make use of this genre are generally of a light-hearted or realistic disposition, and a large focus is placed on character development and interaction, with the primary intention of making the situations and characters in them as relatable and realistic as possible. A common technique within this genre is the mundane fantastic, in which exceptional occurrences by the audience’s standards are treated as commonplace and standard by the characters.  NOTABLE PRODUCTS – Due to the genre’s prevalence in Japanese entertainment, a large amount of these are anime.
  • 9.  LACK OF SPECIAL EFFECTS  By disregarding any additional effects such as digital colouration, computer-made graphics, or editorial techniques, the product becomes more grounded in reality, further selling the premise to the audience as a possibility in mundane life. This enhances the previously stated slice-of-life aesthetic, and furthermore establishes the material shown in the product as a realistic and relatable scenario.  NOTABLE PRODUCTS – By excluding the more flashy special effects from production, it gives producers and directors more time and resources to funnel into other aspects of the project.
  • 11.  EXAGGERATION & EXPRESSION  By having the actor portray a frustrated and emotionally expressive character, the comedic value of the product is raised through the exaggerated and ridiculous aura that is presented. Without this element, the final product would be too sombre and pitiable, turning the audience off and misrepresenting the themes that the creator is trying to convey.  NOTABLE PRODUCTS – The products that rely on these techniques are often based within an unlikely narrative, commonly incorporated unusual or fantastical elements.
  • 14. The test film shown to the left was used to teach us how to competently operate basic filming equipment and the steps necessary to produce the shots we needed, such as finding the correct locations.
  • 15.  What elements of your experiments will you include in your final product?  I believe that I will stick to the filming techniques displayed in the experiment, which will help to sustain the down-to-earth nature of the project.
  • 16.  Our editing experiment was the same as the video displayed above. It was used to let us sharpen and review what we already knew how to do with the available software.
  • 17.  What elements of your experiments will you include in your final product?  Similarly, I do not believe that I will deviate from the norm in terms of the editing stage, as it would strain the realism of the project.
  • 18. This experiment was used to instruct us on how to correctly use audio equipment and how to properly insert into a flowing piece of film.
  • 19.  What elements of your experiments will you include in your final product?  As the experiment shows, I do not think I will be needing to use non-diegetic audio effects, as it would further negatively effect what the product is trying to convey, which is a sense of relatability and normalcy.
  • 20.  List all the potential constraints that might affect or limit your production, you should consider issues from each of these categories:  Time/Personnel/Cost/Technical/Location/Organisational
