This document provides a proposal for a short film project titled "Surprise". It includes sections on the audience, which is identified as 16-19 year old males who enjoy violent films. The concept involves a character who returns home to find someone in their window, grabs a bat to investigate, and ends up hitting an unconscious person at a surprise party. Working Title: Surprise
It references the quote in the film. Before viewing the film,it would sound mysterious and would give the
assumption thatitrepresents the negative shock that the character has from seeing the person in the window.
Audience:
My audience is aged between 16 and 19 year olds. The reason is because that’s the age range
that will appreciate the type of violence shown in my film, as it will practically show what happened
through the sound effects, and the impact it caused when they turned on. my age range will
understand the situation better, whilst the younger demographic may be a bit oblivious to what
happened, as they aren’t used to this type of violence. For gender, it mainly aims at the male
audience. The reason is because they tend to like more violent films compared to films, and their
demographic like films like jaws and Face/off, which are violent and a bit gory. My film doesn’t
reference any sexuality in this, so it doesn’t really apply to my film. My film is a short film, and will
target some social statuses. I believe that my film is aimed at ABC1. This is based off the
characters lifestyle, seen as he has a standard house. The house in the short film will be a
standard suburban house. The house is a typical middle class house, as it’s in a good area and a
fair size, in which the higher grade can relate to more, compared to the lower grade. For the
lifestyle, I believe my audience fit in with the belonger category. The first reason for classing this
lifestyle would be because of the way it relates to the films plot. The character clearly lives in a
small area and is clearly close to his family, as they go out of their way to throw him a surprise
party. They could also be classed as the emulator. They can relate to the action the character
takes for the greater good. The character may not do it to seem like a hero, but it would be an
action the emulator would do. For the geo-demographics. There wouldn’t be a certain area that it
would target, as the short film doesn’t really reference where it is or biases any certain area. For
the Gratification, I believe that the audience will gain entertainment from the Short film. It will act as
an enjoyment and escapism, as it allows them to watch something that is fictional.
Rationale (approx. 100 words)
For the rational, I have learnt skills through out the year to prepare me for the FMP. The first would
be my editing. I understand the adobe products more better; especially premier pro. I understand
with cutting and adding effects to the footage. I have also gained knowledge from the camera
techniques. From the short film project, I understand how to get the right shot that I’m looking for in
a film. For example, when I created the dolly shot in The SF project, which gave me the skill to
improvise with the lack of equipment, and to create something out of nothing. The reason I’ve
chosen to do a short film is because it was what I enjoyed the most creating. I can personally be
more creative with a film, as with picking the right shots, and adding effects to it. I have studied on
how other films use some techniques, which will help with including meaning for the specific thing
I’ve added and why it’s necessary to my film.
Project Concept (approx. 200 words)
I ammaking a short film. It is a comedic/suspense short film that ends with a comedic and
unexpected twist. It’s about someone who leaves their house to go to work. After a while, they
walk back to their house, to see someone through their window. (Dolly zoom to characters face in
shock). The character runs to their house, and grabs a bat, and slowly sneaks to the front door.
The character is in the house which is pitch black; you hear a swoosh and a whack sound. The
lights turn on, to seeing people yell surprise. The character is stood still with a gobsmacked face
whilst holding his bat, with there being an unconscious person on the floor. The film will include
items in which I need to research into. I will need to look at similar films/short films to mine, that
have similar techniques to see how they present them. I will also need to find my audience by
making some people do a survey, so that I know who my film is being presented to. Lastly, I will
also need to experiments on the different techniques I am wanting to do; so that I’m firstly, more
confident in doing them and secondly, see other alternatives in doing that technique.

Evaluation (approx. 50 words)
For the evaluation of my work, I will be doing a weekly reflection on my progress and what I’ve
done in each week. It will also have strengths, weaknesses and improvements so that I know how
I can do better in the next week. When I’ve done my production, I will be doing a final evaluation to
conclude the work that I’ve produced by seeing what went well and what I could do better etc.

you with finding out the target audience.
Conclude what has been found out at each

 Look into demographics and ratings of films
to see who likes the films and figure out why
the film reaches that demographic
 BBFC research to see what age rating the
film is
 Interview two different people, and see what
they have to say about your idea.

what the looks on it represent.

the chosen items represent in the film.
 Get permission for location and cast
 List the location(s) address
 Breakdown what happens in every scene of
the film, mentioning the visual and audio
used for the scene.
 Create a shot list, listing every shot in the
film, and the type it is.
 List the recourses used in the film
 Get a cast list, showing everyone’s role in
the film, and a call sheet, showing their
information and schedule for the day.
 Create a contingency list and a health and
safety list, showing the potential issues of
making the product. Health and safety is
showing the dangers of the crew, and the
contingency showing the technical,
organisational, logistical and personnel
issues.
 Make a schedule for the production days.
5 Production filming  Film the shots
 Book equipment and take it home.
 Film in location areas that are set, and make
sure the area is cleared out. The same goes
for the indoor shots.
 Go get the props.
 Use the wanted camera techniques that are
researched from the experiments.
6 Production editing  Place the videos in chronological order
 Put the cinematic lines in the shot.
 Adjust the colours in the first few shots
 Go ahead and record sounds that are
needed for the film
7 Production  Creating the music for the shots
 Sort the colour scheme for the inside scenes
 Add in any special effects or extras in the
film
8 Production  Create the introduction to the film
 Make the credits
 Add the sound effects where necessary to
the film.
 Export it.
9 Evaluation  Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses for
both the plan and the research.
 Talk about how time was managed and what
to do if additional time was given
 Look at aesthetic quality’s of the film, and
compare it to an existing.
 Compare the technical quality’s of the film to
existing products
 Look at what my film has shown to appeal to
the target audience
 Get peer feed back and look at what they
were right with, what they were wrong with
and what I could have done differently in the
film.
