2. • The art/ science of motion picture photography.
• There are different shot types
• ELS- used to introduce settings
• LS – used to show dynamics and relationships of a group of people or setting
• MS- helps to see from knee to head of a person and read body langue is popular and most
used
• CU- frames the face/head. To get details of the person and can be used to draw attention to
particular features
• Over the shoulder- can get both characters , feelings and reactions
• Low angle- can change the atmosphere of the scene or how we see the character
• High angle- has the same effect but portrays a different feel this, high angle has the link to
looking down on something more venerable
• For the magazine some of these shots will be needed for photos inside and the cover photos.
3. FRAMING
• Closed framing – the person seems closed in/ boxed
• Open framing- can see beyond the character will have a lot of frame
• There is a basic principle of thirds, which also applies to magazine covers
• This will need to be considered for the photos in the magazine as we will want to to
send the right messages through images as they are a key part of the front cover
4. HOW ITS USED IN MAGAZINES
• We will look at a content page , a cover and article and do research on how
cinematography is used so it can be taken into consideration when taking the
photos for my magazine.
• The magazine will have a photo on the front page along with secondary images and
a main image on the article page.
• Next to learn more I will evaluate the images in a magazine to see what shots ,
techniques are used
5. COVER PAGE
The cover page for this kerrang magazine used a chest to head shot
of the artist, it seems that open framing is used for the photo, this
might be so that it seems open to encourage people to open the
magazine.
Chest head shots are common on magazines unless it’s a full body
shot, but most examples are CU shots to focus on the main aspect
and on details.
6. COVER PAGE
As you can see all the cover pages have the shot in common , pictures of single artists usually
have a chest and head shot which emphasis the features of the individual where as the group
ones use the shot to include all the member
When taking my own photos I will take into consideration how other magazines lay out there
photos , it must be open and inviting and not to much that will distract from the main image.
7. CONTENT PAGE
The content page has more than one image , however has a main image as a
focal point , this image is similar looks to the cover it has an open frame and is
CU shot, however other shots are used such as LS shots if more than one person
wants to be included in a photo this could be a picture of a band of an event
where all the detail of the event would want to be included.
8. CONTENT PAGE
We can see the content pages have arrange of different images which come in different types of
shots depending on what wants to be presented, the images reflect the articles and what is inside so
the framing and shots vary.
9. ARTICLE
The article inside has a similar layout of the photos but
it depends on the content of the article this one is
about a single artist however bands may use different
shots. The framing is open so that it blends with the
background and the lay out of the page , it doesn’t
stand out but is still the centre point of the double
page spread
10. ARTICLE
We can see from the double page spread that most of
one of the pages is taken up by the photo the other has
the article information , this helps with the positioning of
are article photo and what side the image will have to be.
The overall intention is to have an image which relates
and looks like part of the page as it is all one , it is
different from having a poster page inside the magazine
the picture is part of the article and needs to look part of
it so it shouldn’t be closed framing as that would separate
it from the article. Where it should work well together as
it is part of the same double page spread.
