2. • To make my trailer successful I will have to look into trailers with common
themes and genre. This will help me establish what is successful and what
isn’t as well as giving me some ideas for my own trailer.
I am going to look at the trailers for
• Angus thongs and perfect snogging
• The edge of seventeen
• Sixteen candles
There are other films I have considered however they are similar to these, so I
thought I would go through three different ones all realised at different times
3. The edge of seventeen(2016)
The edge of seventeen is coming of age comedy-drama. Her high school life
gets harder for Nadine when her best friend starts to date her older brother.
I picked this one as the main character is going through personal struggles
and is at a low in her life and things through out the movie change, like her
friendships. I would like to start my trailer at the low point in some life and
then it improves. Which this does but then twists it with comedy but also
happiness.
4. Trailer
• Within seven seconds we get a title of the film
• Which is followed with a sequence which expresses her emotions and
relationship with a character
• 0:49 seconds in we get the credits of production and so on
• This is when the narration starts
• We then see what a strong friendship she has with her best friend christa
• However she finds out that she is seeing her brother
• Some clips show how she is alone
• At 2:10 we then see some more text on the screen about the producer
• We then get another at 2:24
• Meanwhile it shows her at a party which is out of her character.
• At 2:51 a visual message is shown
• Then more at 3:02
• This trailer is 4:43
5. Angus thongs and perfect snogging
(2008)
This film is about a teenage girl and her 3 best friend's. She's struggling at home
with her parents being distant as her dad gets a job in New Zealand. She develops
a crush on a boy who seems to be with one of the most popular girls in school , she
feels immature and young and wants to get older. Her best friends gets a
boyfriend and she feels like she's losing her and this makes her do some strange
things but it all seems to work out in the end.
I have picked this one as the characters go through realistic troubles of everyday
teenage girls. This is what I want to represent in my trailer and the same kind of
audience im trying to appeal to.
6. Trailer
• The trailer starts with up beat music and a clip from the film including some dialogue this is followed by paramount credits
at 0:06
• The film then begins with a long shot of a beach ( setting the location ) and a narration begins
• We see a clip of the four girls happily walking down a path while the narration is still running
• At 0:16 and image of the main character comes up which is placed on a lined paper background to suggest schooling giving
an indication of age. Plus on screen there is writing which says “How to FLAUNT it “
• This reappears however with a different image and different writing at 0:21,0:27
• The music then changes to a more rock style as it gets more into the key points into the story including highlighting male
leads
• Through out there is the narration
• The trailer highlights comedy and romance factors
• The narrator tells us about other films the director has done at 1:18
• At the end at around 1:1 the film comes up
• After one more clip we see coming soon on the screen 1:58
• The trailer is 1;59
7. Sixteen candles(1984)
The main character is about to turn 16 however her family forgets as her
sister is about to get married, and at school life isn’t much better as she
pines after a jock.
I decided to look into this as the main character is about the same age as I
plan for my characters to be , she is struggling with home life and her
feeling which are shown through the movie. It is an older classic however
clearly shows how codes and conventions stay the same through coming of
age drams, so comparing this to more modern films trailers will help me
establish
8. Trailer
• The trailer has commentary at the beginning, it starts off by introducing us to
the character “ this is Samantha baker…”
• This is followed by a sequence of clips, which include her on a buss , her with her
grandparents and her brother. Where she is disappointed that they forgot her
birthday which is enounced in the narration
• At 0:27 a credit comes up introducing universal pictures
• The title then appears at 0:34
• The narration carries on with clips of her life
• It expresses her interest for love interest Jake Ryan
• The trailer then highlights the problems within her life, her friends and family.
• With some more narration
• The trailer is 2:45
9. What I've taken from this
• It has given me an idea about what to look for in secondary research
• It has made me consider having a narration done as it is a common factor of films trailers
• The trailers I have looked at have a very strong feel of romance although I may incorporate
that it wont be my main theme , so its given me ideas on how to work round that and what I
need to include to keep it interesting.
• The sound is a huge part of a trailer and really sets the tone , this will be a big part in the
construction.
• Most trailers start with a chronological sequence as such and then go into a montage I will
consider this when creating my story board from my basic ideas
• These are good trailers to look at and have some similarities however the messages and
genre are different and its good to think about how my trailer is original and may fill a gap
in the market and this may benefit me when looking into institutions.
• 2 of these films have numbers in the name, I may consider this when deciding the name of
the film im making the trailer for
