5. Advertisement layout design
I chose to make a fashion/photography magazine because of my passion
in photography and putting together the mise-en-scene for a certain look
for whole images.
A personal favorite aspect of magazines are the glossy pages of
advertisements, how an image scan represent a whole brand, and all the
cool concepts that different brands come up with. And all they add to it, is
the name of the brand it their traditional fonts. I wanted to keep the codes
and conventions of high-end adverts because I like how the photography
is the focal point, the mise-en-scene is portraying all the emotions
meanings of the certain image a brand wants to portray itself as.
Therefore most of my adverts will be centered around the image and text
will be added as use of a logo. On some of my adverts I will add a source
of contact, for example a website URL or a social media badge. I did this
to add some authenticity and also to add a design element.
6. Feature Article layout Design
Sketched plans When a magazine has a cover star,
(especially in the fashion magazine
industry) they have a specific featured
article which links directly to the cover and
the theme of the issue and also features
the cover star. The feature article is the
biggest aspect of content in a fashion
magazine as all the other content
wouldn't directly link to the theme as much
as the feature article does.
Because I chose to make an art issue I
want the feature article to relate a lot to art
therefore I have the idea of doing an
interview with a model in an art gallery
(York Art Gallery), and have the model
have an interest in the art scene.
I'm going to make the feature article 6
pages long, 3 pages for images and 3
pages for text, I'll keep the layout clean
and simple so that the images are the focal
point and also the text won't be over
powering and will be easier and clearer to
read.
I wanted to begin the feature with a striking front facing image of Emily
and a large heading and a small introduction. I did it like this because I
felt it fit the normal convention of a fashion magazines feature
article; main images to represent who or what the feature will be about
and a little insight following. By laying it out like this the reader will be
intrigued to read on as they have been given a little teaser and also the
image I will, my model will stare down the camera to add the eye
contact to engage the reader. Following it on I kept the style of main
image and the text on a separate page, I also will add some shapes from
the cover but changed the colors to match more towards to colors from
my images.
7. Article layout design
I want different types of content in my magazine, including smaller articles that’s have a small
amount of information relating to the image. I have an idea to have a celebrity figure, releasing
her won clothing line, and the double page article would be the first released news. Therefore one
image will be used, (an image which will stand out and the clothes will be quirky) and a small
proportion of text giving the information to the reader alongside a small quote from the celebrity
herself.

I wanted my front cover to reflect
the theme of the issue, "art issue".
But I wanted to show this meaning
without narrowing the design
elements to a particular style art,
therefore I thought quirky/obscure
shapes would fit nicely. I also
specifically went out and bought a
top for the cover. The top was
white with lots of different
colored long thing lines all over it, I
liked how the top linked well with
my theme of art and particularly
links nicely to my feature spread of
my cover model on how color is a
huge aspect in her style. Therefore
I used the colors from the top as
inspiration towards the quirky
shapes I was designing to
represent the art aspect of my
magazine and also for the
visually aspect of filling the
negative space of the magazine.

I wanted to keep the design
element of the shapes following
through to my content page. For
the same reasons as my cover
page, to keep the theme portrayed
to the reader in a neutral way.
I used a very similar font for my
title, "content" as one of the fonts
on my cover, I did this to again
keep the style following through,
and I like the ideal of using
different colors for each letter and
with this font it works very well,
due to the tilt and space between
letters.
