1. Evaluation- Question 1
In what ways does your media product
use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media product?
2. The Masthead:
• I wanted the title of the magazine to grab the
audience’s attention straight away, so i made the
title short and snappy like most magazines the
title is one or two words. ‘The Choice’ the colour
of the masthead is bright to attract the reader’s
attention, from my research i gained knowledge
that the left third is always visible on the
magazine stand. I placed the masthead on the
top left of the front cover as it will be visible on
the left third of the magazine on the stand.
3. The Images:
• The images in my magazine are very important to attract the
audience to my magazine and play a vital part in trying to get my
magazine recognised. My main image had to represent the
magazine and the genres my magazine represented, i believe my
model done this perfectly as his pose was quite hard and his face
was straight to show his attitude. He wore a hoodie with the hood
on to also portray the genre and attitude this specific artist is part
of. The pose he holds is quite rude and has an attitude, he crosses
his arms and this is to show his rap attitude. His clothes also stand
out against the background and this also helps for the masthead to
stand out. The actual image i believe is quite professional as it
didn’t need any editing, also there is more light on one side of his
face then the other and many magazines use this technique as it is
very effective. I also believe that the plain backdrop helped for the
cover lines to stand out.
4. Contents:
• My contents was split into two pages: one for my
regulars and one for my features. I kept the colour
scheme and font the same as on the front cover to
show consistency. On my features contents page there
was only one image of the main feature, in this image
he was smiling and this was to show a different side to
him. In my research of ‘xxl’ magazine it also done the
same. In my regulars contents page there was 2 images
of two different topics, these images were put there to
show who featured. The image of the main feature was
considerably bigger than the other two images to show
that he was the main feature of this magazine.
5. DPS:
• My dps was split in half, one side was one image of the
artist whilst the other side was the interview with artist
this idea was taken from various reading of different
magazines. I thought this was a good idea because
readers like having pictures to look at whilst reading,
also because having half the page for an interview this
means the interview didn’t have to be too long and
could be short and sweet just to keep the reader
interested for other features. The main image was a
close up of the artist this was a different sort of shot to
the contents and front cover, the lighting of this shot
was also very good as the white background stood out
to the models hair and clothing.
6. Font and Style:
• I used this font as it looks like a graffiti style
sort of font and this reflects on the genre i was
doing. I wanted a font that was cool but also
easy to read and simple and for me this font
ticked all of them boxes. The lettering was
simple and easy to read and this fitted the
conventions of the font. The ‘the’ of the
masthead was smaller than ‘choice’ to show
that choice was the main part of the title.
7. Written Content:
• The written content was one the most important parts
of the magazine as it is to read. I used language suited
best for my target audience, this was a good tweek to
my magazine as it then is better for them to
understand. I wanted to make the headings clear with
a brief description of what is contained in the article
which i have seen in several other magazines that i has
researched. The double page spreads written content
was fairly easy for me to do, as i a part of the target
audience of the magazine i found it easy to base the
interview around my views and what i’ll be interested
in. My double page spread contained all dps
conventions e.g a pull out quote.
8. How my magazine portrays the
genre ?
• There are several ways a magazine can display its genre.
The artists costume and pose is one of the ways in my
magazine the model is wearing a hoody and is crossing his
arms i believe that these both contrast the rap genre as he
shows his laid back attitude. This helps to show the genre
as it is the first thing you see once you look at the
magazine. The colour scheme is also important i personally
used a bright blue to go against the ‘xxl’ colour scheme as i
want this magazine to be the competition to ‘XXL’. My
magazine is also targeted at males and this blue is a more
masculine colour and it also works well with the black and
white, these colours help for the blue to stand out.
9. Layout:
• The layout of my magazine is very important as it
helps the looks of the magazine and the reader
really takes the layout into consideration when
reading. I wanted to keep the layout simple but
also affective and appealing to reader. I had the
masthead in the left third of the magazine as it is
always visible on the shelf. I had my main image
in the centre of the page with the main cover line
below it. I put the rest of the cover lines around
the main image to show the importance of the
main image. I also had a lists of artists that were
in the magazine to show that they were in it.
10. Contents:
• My contents layout was simple and had the word ‘Inside’
instead of contents to make it more informal. Below that was
a banner with either ‘features’ or ‘regulars’ in it. This is
because contents page was split into to two and this was
features and regulars, in my features page there was one main
image of the main feature to show he is the main attraction.
On my regulars page there is two images of two of the
regulars. One convention that my contents has is that there
are sub headings with a description.
• Overall i believe my layout was fit to the codes and
conventions of a real product as i done lots of research and
used my own ideas to make my own magazine unique.
