INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH
 To be able to creative an effective and professional product I need to
do some research into real companies and institutions which create
films and magazines.
 There are main stream and independent companies. Which both have
there advantages and disadvantages
 In this I will look into a Varity of different companies who may be
interested in my products and distributing them. Some companies may
have a gap in what the have already distributed.
 Some company's are involved in the distribution and the production
however the main focus in looking for companies that distribute films
 Some examples are Lionsgate , 20th century fox , Sony pictures , universal
and more
DISTRIBUTORS
 Distributors are there to market the film.
 Distributors are usually different to the production company however
they company can do both but not necessary for the same film
 Films can have multiple distributors for example here is a screen shot
from The Duffs IMDB page on distributors.
Lionsgate is a main stream distribution company. It is an
entertainment and media company. Lionsgate's generates nearly
$2 billion annually at the worldwide ( average ).
Some of the films that they have distributed are
• The Duff
• La La land
• The hunger games
• The cabin in the woods
After looking Through films the have distributed, I have noticed
that compared to other genres, there is a slight lack of teen drama
films. There is a larger amount of action and other kinds of drama.
This could be useful as it adds a different kind of film to what the
already have.
This benefits my product as having a mainstream distribution
suggest to an audience that it is a good quality like the other films
distributed by this company.
Some of the films they have distributed
like the duff are some of the films I have
been looking at for inspiration.
 Paramount is one of Americas oldest motion picture companies. It
celebrated 100 year in 2012. Through research it is clear they do
quite a bit of production however they have distributed films such
a
 Saving private Ryan
 Love rosie
 Star trek
 The wolf of wall street
 Through research it is clear they do a lot of distribution for Tv
shows most significantly crime TV shows.
 With that in mind it may be a could company consider as many of
the films distributed are well known and popular this could
benefit my product. Many of the films are successful as well as the
Tv shows.
 20th century fox are an American company and is one of
the big six major film studios.
 20th century fox have distributed many successful films like
 Juno
 Gifted
 Miss peregrines home for peculiar children
 Kingsman : the secret service
 Gone girl
 What's your number
 Marely and me
The company have distributed a large range of films of different
genres , this could be a disadvantage as they may less likely
consider distributing my product as they don’t have a gap to fill
in there market. However it is evident from there success that if
they did distribute it then it would be well done.
 Entertainment one is a multinational distribution company.
That is based in Canada. The have partnered with
companies such as Lionsgate
 Here are some of the films they have distributed
 Now you see me 2
 Sinister 2
 That awkward moment
 Warm bodies
 Letters to Juliet
Entertainment one is not one of the major six. However does
partner with them meaning you could still get good quality but
it could be cheaper and easier to get a deal with.
BIG SIX STUDIOS
 The big six American studios are
 Paramount
 Warner bros
 Columbia pictures
 Walt Disney pictures
 Universal pictures
 20th century fox
These are all main stream distributors although this can benefit the product.
Such as a good reputation and standard and maybe a larger budget.
Independent companies also have advantages
Studio ( subsidiary) Conglomerate ( parent)
Warner bros Time warner
Paramount Viacom
20th century fox News Corp
Walt Disney pictures The Walt Disney company
Columbia pictures Sony corporation
Universal pictures GE and Comcast
 Vertigo films is an independent British film production
and distribution company. It was created in 2000 and has
distributed 35 films.
 It has distributed films such as
 Shroom’s
 Spring breakers
 Street dance 2
 The diary of a teenage girl
The company is new then many of the others and has only
distributed 35 films, however this means they may want to add
to what they’ve already done. On the other hand it might not
be as good or have a budget as high as main stream
companies. The films distributed aren’t as successful or well
known.
 Samuel Goldwyn films distributes art house , foreign and independent
films. Doing the film as an independent film could be an option. The
research and finding the company was hard however I found it through
the distributors of the film the first time which is a film with a similarly
aged target audience and themes.
 This may be an effective way of distribution if the film brief met what
the company does produce.
 Finding and independent company which specialises in a specific genre
may help
