2. Magazines
I picked kerrang and Rock sound as the magazines for the analysis
I picked these as they are similar yet different in there style layout
and content however have a genre link, both publishing content
relevant to my analysis and what I have researched about music
magazines.
There Unique Magazines represent a rock/punk style of music with
creative , identifiable and unique images , articles, styles and
content and are a good example of a good yet adventures music
magazines. They both present in different but effective way.
3.
4.
5. Kerrang
• Overall the cover it presented neat
and professional including a master
head , sky lines and sell lines.
• Including suitable images either of
groups or a close up shot of an
individual.
• Font which highlight and have
connotations of the information
inside which has a great effect all
round.
• Now we will look into the cover of a
kerrang magazine in more detail
6. Sky line
• SKY LINE
• The sky line emphasis the content giving extra
and relevant detail of what to expect what’s in
side. The blue and pink writing could be to
appeal to all but also to stand out against the
white background along with the sky line writing
being bold which gives an exaggeration to the
information which runs along the top of the issue
. The corner( edgy of the sky line) is ripped which
suggest maybe the magazine isn’t clean cut and
maybe a little rough and edgy these are subtle
connotations of what's in side also the corner is
important as this is a key part a place you use to
turn the page, every one unconsciously looks at
this so it is a smart idea to put information here.
The 10 posters inside part is on a vibrant colour
which could be so this small information stand
out after research it is evident readers
appreciate the posters so this is a good selling
point to have in Sky line.
7. Masthead
MASTHEAD
The masthead for the magazine is
identifiable this is because it keeps the
concept through issues , it changes colour
depending on the issue but it is the same
style and usually in the same position this
makes it recognizable. The denotation of
the word kerrang has a big relevance to
music. The Font used is bold and is slight
messed/broken which links to the daring
content of the magazine, as they dare to
change the style around ( they dare to
break the rules , like the broken style of
the font). An explanation point is also
used for emphasis of the word as Kerrang.
The font is bold and sharp like the unique
style and content. The typical colour
works with most backgrounds and stands
out on contrasting background to draw
attention even if it is set behind the main
image it is still a key concept of making
the kerrang cover eye catching and
distinguishable
8. Image
There are different points to pull from
the image
• Its a medium close up
• This means it catches the details
like his tattoos and microphone
• It’s the main part of the page
• It is the main focal point but isn’t
distracting
• His look matches the theme/ design
• It looks professional
• It works well and doesn’t contrast
to much
9. • He is the only person in the image and is
the focal point we know this by the look
he has and the eye contact which is
being made. He is the key part of the
cover and the eye contact makes a
connection between the reader and the
cover. The facial expressions and over all
look are large indicators of the genre of
the artist along with showing some
presumed stereotype's to link the artist
with the theme of the magazine
10. Clothes and body langue are a large part
of how the artist is presented. The man
in this cover is wearing dark clothes
which don’t stand out this is because this
isn’t the detail which they want you to
focus on the attention is on his arms and
his hands which have many tattoos these
are identifiable to him which makes a
connection with fan of him but also a
connection with the style of the
magazine. There a stand out part of the
picture but not the over all cover they fit
in with the genre and design and it makes
the picture suitable.
His body langue and how he’s presented
holding the microphone is a key indicator
of him being on stage and a well known
artist as the image looks as if it is him
live and preforming
Plain Black
Vest top
Tattoos
11. Images change on covers like some being
groups they can show more things such as
different things through each member
however with person we can still see
things.
The man is young, we can tell by the
tattoos and hair styles this addresses the
age range giving ideas of youth and
exciting which could lead to the ideas of
free and wild, Wild would be more linked
to the photo as of his facial expression
and his action. The man in the photo has
a tight grip on his shirt which he is pulling
even breaking from ( going wild ) this
could be a link from pulling away from
control or parents orders. This can also
be considered with the stereotypical
mature themes of the bands songs and
albums . The image reflects this
12. The image is centred on the page all of
the parts of the magazine like
straplines and secondary images over
lap it. However it covers the master
head which is just behind the image.
This is noticeable in lots of issues of
the magazine and seems to an
identifiable feature. It’s a clean
professional looking lay out. The image
is the main focus of the magazine and
is a key part of the front cover so it is
important for it to match the layout
but also be the right shot. This is why I
did research into cinematography
13. Sell line
This is the line which indicates the
main article in the magazine, It has a
bold font to emphasis it’s importance
within the magazine. The bright and
vibrant colour used contrasts the
background and the image on the
magazine. It is also mid/ center page
which makes it eye catching. This also
has relevance to the image on the
cover.
14. Other than the information on the
main article in bright yellow , there
are extra details on the strapline this
is the part in pink. It is on a banner as
such and has white writing. One of
which is a direct quote from what's
inside the magazine like a sneak
preview. The pink background banner
also indicates it’s importance to the
magazine. This part of the sell line is
as important however doesn't distract
from the main sell line which is on the
cover.
15. Secondary image
• Not all magazines have more than
one image on the cover however
the example I am using shows one
secondary image
• The purpose is just another
indication of what's inside the
magazine however showing it
rather than telling you , this could
be more appealing to people who
prefer images over text.
• Looking through Kerrang
magazines some have secondary
images and others don’t
Do
16. Key aspects
• There are many things each issue has in
common these things must be things
which the customers like and what the
customers like in the magazine
• A very noticeable one for Kerrang is
posters, there is lots of information on
what posters are included such as little
notes on the corners or a strip along the
bottom of the page to aware the readers
of this. These must be things there
audience enjoy and look for in the
magazine so they carry on to include this
over time.
17. Review of the cover
• Over all the magazine is presented
well and professionally, it is effective
along with being unique and daring.
• There is always a division between
genre these are as they have bands
which mix from rock , metal and pop
punk however they show this in
different way.
• Now we will look at rock sound
magazine.
The magazines are reliable to readers,
this is more in content than anything
else the contain information they know
there audience will enjoy such as
including bands and information which
they represent and show through the
cover to gain the readers interest.
18. Rock sound
• The cover is colorful and includes a lot of text.
• After looking through many covers of the
magazine , it takes a risk in using brighter
colour’s and changes them around this
contradicts the stereotypes of ”rock “ music
which is even in the name of the magazine
• even though there is a lot of text the image is
till important and visible, it has been laid out
well to include all the information however not
look messy and cluttered.
• You can see the change in style through the
many issues of the magazine.
• We can look in more detail in the individual
aspects of the magazine
19. Skyline
There seems to be some things in common
with straplines , they seem to contain
relevant information which doesn't’t need to
be there.
Posters seem to be a common thing included
in skylines. The small images are good
advertisement as it gives you a slight idea
what you might get if you purchase it
however you need to buy the magazine to
get it in large.
The font used for ” HUGE POSTER SPECIAL ”
is a normal bold font which stands out as
the white and yellow contrast the blue
background, meaning even though it is small
it is still visible on the cover of the
magazine. It puts an emphasis on the words
20. MastHead
• The mastheads for the rock sound
magazine change , usually in colour
however keep the same style. Block
letters In bright colour’s with a white
and black outline which gives it a 3D
look. It looks modern and stands out
with the other bright colour's and
also make a logo from the R in the
master Head. Like Kerrang the
master head is set back however still
stands out.
21. Image
A lot of the image is covered by
straplines and items, however it still
shows a band on the cover. It’s a close
up shot of the band members the way
the front man is more forward and
takes priority over the others suggests
he plays a large role or is the face of
the band for example the lead
vocalist, he has a very serious
expression compared to the others and
the emotions vary between each
member of the band. The faces of the
people is the key part as it is the
majority of the cover
22. His features are happy which
gives a youthful and
adventurous look to the band
and it expressive positivity
The facial expressions
changed for each
member, some are more
positive and others have
a darker more serious
look which reflects
stereotypes of the genre
There is a mix of
emotions some
overly happy , some
neutral and others
more serious. The
different emotions
link to different
things such as looking
youthful and
adventures but also
edgy and fitting
typical ideas of the
sterotypes.
23. The image is a close up shot of the people, they are in an
open frame so it looks less messy as it is a busy cover. The
band is large so there is a lot of people and must all be
dressed to expresses ideas and themes as well as there
stances and position.
The background is not busy or bright as the overall cover is ,
it makes its layout good. The picture on this cover is a little
unique as it is covered by a lot however it doesn't’t mean its
not effective.
24. Sell line
The magazine has a lot of sell lines
each one expressing something new ,
there in bright colour's and stand out on
the background. The change of writing
colour points out different things and
makes it obvious there is different
information it is clear and readable and
that makes it effective.
However this takes up a large section of
the front cover and may be distracting
and unappealing to some people.
25. The cover has a lot of information more
than the Kerrang magazine however it
works well together , this information
isn't as stand out so it reflects the
relevance. This information is
important for some people however
isn't there to catch new readers eyes.
This however is a key part for regular
readers as this is a key part in the
audience and what they want, things
like this is what they have discovered
from research. This can be labeled as
puff’s .
26. Lay out and style
The layout stays similar through out ,
however certain parts change this
makes it identifiable which is a good
aspect for the cover to have.
• The colour's change however stand
out and are bright ( master head)
• The images are laid out similar, with
slight changes in the stance and
facial expression
• The sell lines font changes however
is usually in the same place on the
cover. It will reflect what looks best
for the style of the magazine
27. Review
• Over all it shows how to use text in a
a way which isn't cluttered
• It doesn't’t have a secondary image
but makes up with this in text
• It has bright and vibrant colour's
which make it stand out
• Over all it is effective and
informative
The magazine cover contains a lot of
things and shows a different style and
how to make things work with a lot of
text.
It is bright and modern and maybes
shows more Pop than Kerrang, the
images are all clear. Even though lots
is going on it isn't cluttered
There is a colour scheme which works
well however changes through each
and all seem to change. This works for
the magazine but might not appeal to
some people
28. Content pages
There many things which make a good
content page and should be included
• Page numbers
• Categories
• Images
• Content
A good content will include these and
also look professional, magazines do this
in different ways and we can compare
and identify key features of the 2
magazines we picked.
I tried to get my own copies however
could not find one for rock sound.
29. Rock sound
The rock sound content page is mostly
darker pages which could link to the
ideas of the genre of being dark. This
could also be reflected in the red colours
used as they have connotations of danger
and evil.
The content is done in categories which
are in white to stand out on the dark
background. The colour red is also used
as it matches the artist hair along with
the word danger being highlighted in red/
pink.
There is also quotes to give a taster of
what's inside. Like the information
provided on this page is a guide to what
you can find in the magazine
30. The picture of the artist takes up most of the page , it is a
chest shot/ close up. His facial expression is serious and he's
not looking at the camera which makes it a little bit more
relaxed. He looks as if he's deep in thought ( maybe thinking
of song lyrics) this could be to represent him in a specific
way. Along with a brighter light being used in the direction
he is looking into to emphasis he is looking towards
something.
He’s wearing dark clothes and a leather jacket which contrast
the bright colours of his hair. His hair looks fun and indicates
he's young as well as being stand out and identifiable.
However even though his hair is bright and vibrant the colour
red also has negative connotation however these can link to
the stereotypes of the genre of music.
31. The writing on the page is easy to read
and isn’t fancy , along with being bold
like the artist we can make this
connection because of the unique hair
colour.
The change in font sizes indicates the
importance of the information and the
colour, like page numbers being in
different colours. And the main title is
highlighted with a background in red/
pink. This highlights key points on the
page for key navigation
The name of the magazine is also in
the top corner.
32. Kerrang
For the kerrang magazine I got my own
picture of a content page. The is the
may 2016 issue ( number 1620)
The content page for this issue has
similar aspects to the rock sound
magazine , it has images and
categories and so on however there
laid out differently and have different
messages.
33. Similar to Rock sound the colours of
the page still have a darker theme,
like the image the clothes hairs and
background are all darker , the image
is trying to set a spooky feel to the
page , as the artist is dressed in what
could be interrupted as costume along
with there being spooky props like a
skeleton. Props set the screen for the
image used along with costume and
background. This Image has a kind of
Halloween vibe we can tell this by the
props such as a skeleton with red eyes
and a Ouija board.
However this darker theme could
relate to ideas around the artist ,this
could relate to there songs or albums.
34. This section is the category's of the
content and a list of what's inside. The
yellow backing to the bold black words
could resemble warning tape / crime
scene tape and could link to the idea
of something spooky happening. Bright
yellows could have connotations of
toxic or a warning
The lay out of content is different ,
page numbers aren’t emphasised
however it does categorises. The
writing is clear and bold however so
we can identify categories. Along with
it being clear to read and provides
relevant information
35. • To achieve this I will include
• Relevant images
• Easy and clean writing
• Colour schemes and a working layout
• Titles and categories
• themes
There are a lot less key aspects to a
content page. The content page needs
to inform readers and have a
professional layout along with
matching other parts of the magazine
Images on both content pages and
covers need to be open and stand out
the artist or bands need to expresses
them selves and there image through
the facial expressions , body language
and outfits.
