MATERIALS
 Materials are made up of matter.
 Matter maybe in the form of solid, liquid and gas.
ENGINEERING MATERIALS
 Materials that are used as raw material for any engineering
application are known as Engineering Materials.
OVERVIEW OF MATERIALS
METALS
 Good conductor of heat and electricity.
 Example: copper
NON - METALS
 Poor conductor of heat and electricity.
 Example: plastics
FERROUS
 With iron
 Example: Steel & cast iron
NON FERROUS
 Without iron
 Example: Aluminium & Titanium
THERMOPLASTICS
 Can be reused
 Example: Polyethylene terephthalate [PET]
THERMOSETS
 Cannot be reused
 Example: Epoxy [EP]
CERAMICS
 Withstand high temperature
Example:
1. Aluminium oxide Al2O3
2. Silicon carbide SiC
ALLOYS
 Mixture of two or more elements
 Major portion – solvent
 Minor portion - solute
 Atleast one metal
 Homogeneous mixture
 Isotropy in nature
 Identical property at all the points
COMPOSITES
 Mixture of two or more elements
 Major portion – matrix
 Minor portion - reinforcement
 Not necessary
 Heterogeneous mixture
 Anisotropy in nature
 Property will differ based on the loading conditions
 Tailoring the property
