Learning to Be Content – Part 2
Paul’s contentment did not come by the methods
taught by the Stoic philosophers but by relying upon God.
Paul told the Philippian brethren, “I have learned in what-
ever state I am, to be content” (4:11). Contentment is
not something we are born with it is something that we
must learn. Paul learned this contentment by relying, not
upon himself, but upon God. Two verses later he wrote, “I
can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
(Phil. 4:13). The American Standard Version translates
this verse as, “I can do all things in him that strength-
eneth me.” The name “Christ” is not in the best manu-
scripts but it has been noted that “the preposition “in” is
more important than the choice of noun or pronoun.” Why?
Because Paul’s ability to be content in any state is due to
that relationship with Christ. Paul was not some superhu-
man being that could attain to such abilities that the rest
of us could never have. It was because he was “in Christ.”
Paul’s contentment was not based upon his outward cir-
cumstances. Paul would have that inner peace even if the
Philippians had not sent to meet his needs. Paul could not
imagine any situation in life that he and the Lord could not
handle. Paul had an inward sufficiency in the Lord.
Paul learned by experience. Again he told the
brethren at Philippi, “I know how to be abased, and I
know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I
have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to
abound and to suffer need” (Phil. 4:12). The word
“abased means “to make low.” Paul had abased himself
when he preached to the Corinthians without compensa-
tion. “Did I commit sin in humbling myself that you
might be exalted, because I preached the gospel of
God to you free of charge? (II Cor. 11:7). To abound is
“to overflow.” This is the very opposite of being abased.
Thus Paul had experienced both extremes. Paul knew
what it meant to be full, a word when used of animals,
meant “to fatten, to satiate.” When used of persons it
meant “to satisfy with food.” Likewise he understood what it
meant to be hungry. Paul knew what it was like to be with-
out the food sufficient for the body’s health. To suffer need
meant “to come behind, to be lacking,” and again certainly
experienced that often in his life as a Christian (cf. 2 Cor.
11:27; 12:20).
Paul obtained contentment and so must we. Our
contentment is not to be decided by our situation in life.
Martha Washington, wife of our first president wrote, “I am
still determined to be cheerful and happy in whatever situa-
tion I may be; for I have also learned from experience that
the greater part of our happiness or misery depends on our
dispositions and not on our circumstances. We carry the
seeds of the one or the other about with us in our minds,
wherever we go.” This is why Paul had earlier said that we
were to think on whatever was true, honorable, just, pure
lovely and of good report. He learned it by experience and
by his being in Christ.
