Broken or Fixed?
How do you prefer most things: broken or fixed?
Typically, people prefer things that are fixed over things
that are broken. The reason is obvious. Broken things do
not function as they are intended. But anything that was
broken and becomes fixed functions as it was
originally designed to. These facts are simplistic. But
when it comes to who we are as Christians, what are we:
broken or fixed?
A common sentiment about Christians today
can be summarized in this quote from Anita Krizzan:
“God shines through the cracks of broken people.” Like
broken vessels through which Christ’s light can shine
through, so it is often viewed that Christians are broken
people who God uses. But is this the picture of
Christians that God’s Word paints? We do indeed find
one place in which the Bible portrays brokenness as
positive thing for God’s people. In Ps. 51:17, God
desires to see in His people “a broken (humble) and
contrite heart.”
But when it comes to who we are as His people,
God never calls us broken. On the contrary, in Christ we
are identified as being complete (Col. 2:10) and
perfectly holy before God (Heb. 10:14). We are new
creatures (2 Cor. 5:17), not old broken creatures. This
completeness, perfect holiness, and newness that we
possess did not come about by our doing, but is
attributed to us by Christ’s doing (1 Cor. 1:30). People
come to Christ broken in sin, living lives contrary to
God’s intent and design for man (Ecc. 7:29). But those
who come to Christ are healed from the wounds and
brokenness of their sin (1 Pet. 2:24). He heals those who
are sick and lost in sin, and calls them to new living in
repentance (Lk. 5:31-32). They are fixed.
Broken vessels are never portrayed in a positive
light in the Bible (Ps. 31:12; Jer. 48:38). So it is true that
God does not portray Christians as broken vessels, but
as clean and renewed vessels, fully capable of
functioning and serving the Lord according to their
design (2 Tim. 2:20-21). In Christ, God fixed us as
His workmanship and created us for good works (Eph.
2:10).
It may be tempting and easy to view Christians
as broken vessels who serve God because Christians do
sometime sin (1 John 1:9). However, a Christian’s life
is not characterized by the brokenness of sin, but rather
freedom from sin and the newness of life found in Christ
(Rom. 6:3-7). God can certainly be glorified in our
weaknesses (our difficulties, hardships, limitations, etc.
– 2 Cor. 12:9-10), but God and Christ are never glorified
in the flaws and brokenness of sin. All sin
obscures God’s glory (Rom. 3:23). Instead, God and
Christ are glorified the more that we live holy lives (1
Thess. 4:7; 2 Tim. 1:9). While God can indeed work
powerfully in our brokenness of spirit and in our
weaknesses, let us never forget that God has fixed us in
Christ as restored vessels, fully capable of serving His
purpose. ~Jeffrey Howell
