Man’s Plan, God’s Will
Each new year brings about new plans. Whether
we plan our new year with eagerness or
reluctancy, we set up our calendars and prepare
for another ride on the merry-go-round. And year
after year, we learn that “the best laid plans of
mice and men often go awry.” Plans don’t
always pan out as we anticipate. Our successful
plans yield a great sense of accomplishment and
self-confidence. When our plans go awry, it can
be deflating and make us feel as powerless as
mice. Simply put, the plans of man are not
guaranteed. The plans of God, however, are
certain and unshakeable. As Prov. 19:21 says…
“Many plans are in a man’s heart, But the counsel
of the Lord will stand.”
The certainty of God’s plans can be both
comforting and unsettling to us. It can be
comforting because they are for our good and
unsettling because our plans may sometimes be
contrary to God’s plans. It begs the question,
what’s the point of planning if “man plans and
God laughs”? First, it should be understood that
God is not indifferent to our plans. He does not
always support and uphold our plans, but He’s not
out to mischievously undo them either.
Second, God wants us to make wise plans and to
include Him in our plans. As Prov. 16:3 says…
“Commit your works to the Lord, and your plans
will be established.”
The more we include God in our plans, the more
God will endorse and establish our plans. It is
God’s will for us to make plans that are diligent
(Prov. 21:5) and are done with noble purpose (Is.
32:8). In all our plans, we should always account
for and allow for the will of God – which may
be different than ours (James 4:13-15). What
happens when our plans don’t align with God’s
plans? A few verses after Prov. 16:3, we find out
what God does instead when He doesn’t establish
our plans:
“The mind of man plans his way, but the Lord
directs his steps.” Proverbs 16:9
The person who seeks the will of God in all his
plans will be directed by God into the right
path – even when his plans don’t align with God’s
plans. So as we plan out our new year, let us
remember to commit our plans to the Lord and
allow God to direct our steps into His will.
