LADS TO LEADERS, LEADERETTES
There will be a mandatory meeting on Jan 29th
after Bible Classes for everyone who is planning
to attend the Lads to Leaders convention. At
least one adult from each family should be in attendance. It
will be in the fellowship hall.
The Example of Christ
In Peter’s first general epistle we read these in-
structions to those Christians: “For to this you were
called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us
an example, that you should follow His steps” (1 Pet.
2:21). Christ is our example in all things, and the word
Peter used for “example” is very informative. The word is
hupogrammos which literally means “to write under.”
Many of us who are older can remember those sheets of
paper that had the alphabet printed at the top of the page
and we as students would try to copy those letters as
near to perfection as we could. So we who are Christians
are to look to the example of Jesus and try to copy his
example as near to perfection as we can. We should be
of the “same mind” or “attitude” as Jesus (Phil. 2:5). Je-
sus by His actions showed us the perfect example of hu-
mility and obedience. But to fully understand the humility
and obedience of Jesus, we need to first understand that
Jesus existed in the form of God.
There are two different words in the Greek Lan-
guage that can be translated as “form.” First is the word
“schema” that is a reference to the outward form that
changes. The shema of a person is their outward
appearance which does change as we grow from infant to
child to teenager to adult to old age. The other word is
morphe which is a reference to the essential form that
never changes. This word describes the form of Jesus as
God. This means that Jesus was unchangeably God!
This is the testimony of the Scriptures. For example John
began his gospel declaring, “In the beginning was the
Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was
God” (Jn. 1:1). Just a few verses later he added, “And
the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we
beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of
the Father, full of grace and truth” (Jn. 1:14). Then in
2 Cor. 4:4 Paul described Jesus as “the image of God.”
Yet Jesus did not regard equality with God as a
thing to be grasped. The word “grasped” that is used here
is arpagmos which means “to snatch or to clutch or
grasp.” Jesus did not have to “snatch” equality with God
because Jesus already had equality with God. Neither did
Jesus think that equality with God was something to be
held on to. The particular equality that Jesus gave up or
surrendered was NOT His divinity but His being in a glori-
fied state! “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt
among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of
the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and
truth” (John 1:14). Jesus became flesh. Thus Jesus
gave up being only wholly divine to become both wholly
divine and wholly human. Therefore, Jesus “emptied”
Himself and took the “form” of a bond servant.
Again Paul uses the word morphe which means
that Jesus really did become a servant. He really was a
man. There was a group of Gnostics called the docetists
who did not believe that Jesus had a body of flesh. Thus
they did not believe that Jesus was really human. They
claimed that when Jesus walked by the sea, He left no
footprints for He had no physical body. He only
“appeared” to have a physical body.
