Your Clean Slate
Today is Resolution Sunday, and with any resolution,
it begins with a new resolve on a clean slate. What is
a clean slate? If you have been in my office you may
notice a strange flat rock on the shelf as you enter. It is
a slate tile from the roof of the Univeristy of Glasgow. I
did not scale the wall to remove the tile, I was
simply walking by and I saw it and one other laying on
the ground, perfectly intact. The single nail that held
them had gone through the tiles, and they slid to the
ground below. They were covered with years of grime
and weathered. I spent quite a lot of time wiping and
scrubbing, so now I guess you could say I have a “clean
slate.” I gave the other to my dad, and he too has a clean
slate.
What does the phrase “a clean slate” really mean? It
does not mean you have a new roof, it comes from a
Victorian era classroom. Students did not use paper,
but would use a smooth slate with a writing implement
made of slate. Later, this concept made way for the
development of chalk on a chalkboard. When the
assignment was done, the slates were wiped clean for
the next lesson. A clean slate would forever be
synonymous with a new beginning or to describe one’s
potential.
Another use for slate is my favorite and one I am
reminded of every day in my office. Slates, at one time,
were used by local merchants and their customers. The
grocer, for instance, would have a slate that
represented the buyer’s bill, or tab, as it was called. The
buyer would “run up the tab” throughout the week, and
after pay day they returned to pay the grocer what was
owed. The grocer would then wipe the slate clean.
Jesus’ model prayer has an example of a clean slate
when it comes to our relationship with God. Jesus said,
“Pray then like this: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be
your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on
earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our
debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from the evil one (Matthew 6:9-13).
With the new year, we have an opportunity for a new
beginning. Resolution Sunday is a day to affirm our
commitment to God. A day in the beginning of the year
to commit to a steadfastness in faith. A private inner
pledge that recognizes the words of Jesus in John 5:17.
“My Father has been working until now, and I am
working”! It’s a resolution in tightening our grip on
what we are already holding dear. This year, what will
you do with your clean slate?

Thank you
I would like to take the opportunity to express my thanks
for the get well cards, etc while I was in rehab for
several months. Also, I appreciated your prayers and
support. It truly made my day extra special. I’m so
grateful and thankful for having Christian friends. At
present, I’m out of rehab and back home. I’m not
walking on my own yet. I’m using a walker. I’m doing
ok thus far.
Thanks in Christian Love,
Violet Whitman
