Dig Right and You will Get Right.
In today’s lesson, we will be picking up from the final
point last week: lean into the shovel.
We gave the picture of turning the shovel around from a
state of leaning on it, to leaning into it. It is a call to get
to work, having first found our rest in Jesus.
After the lesson Sunday, I was told one funny anecdote
and one common misperception about roadcrews and
their trusty shovels.
The anecdote: A department of transportation team
that left the shop without their shovels. They phone in,
requesting their shovels to be brought by another crew.
They were informed that it would take a while for them
to be supplied, and that they would have to look for
something else to lean on in the meantime.
The misperception: A roadcrew was digging one
single hole. There was one man digging in the hole, and
a line of his coworkers leaning on their shovels. To this,
a passerby complained that all those men were doing
nothing while watching one man break his back. The
foreman replied: “They’re waiting their turn.”
Now, this is a fresh perspective on the need for being
rested and fresh to “share the load.”
Again, it is a call to get to work, having first found our
rest in Jesus.
Like too many cooks in the kitchen, one can have too
many workers in one hole. All it takes for a Spiritual
perceptive is to look around and find an area that needs
digging and grab a shovel, because it is time to get to
planting.
There might be too many cooks, but not enough servers.
We have an opportunity to get involved on Thursdays.
Our Christians in Action (CIA) class is on Thursday
mornings at 9:30 AM, and we deliver meals to members
in need afterward. You may want to spend that time
helping out in and around the kitchen getting the meals
prepped and ready for that delivery. You just might be
the one blessed most in that process.
The simple theme that brother Jerry used to say was “Do
Right.” Doing what is right will create a hole for
planting. It will create a hole (whole) lot of
opportunities to get involved. It might be relieving the
person digging. It might be getting involved in Bible
studies. Familiarizing yourself with the simple “Back to
the Bible” 3 lesson series. You could be ready to shadow
Jeffrey, JJ, or Richard in a Bible Study. Ask around and
see what right thing you can accomplish. You will be so
glad you did.
