Tim Shoemaker ATTENDANCE FOR JULY 15, 2018 AM 369 PM 182 Upcoming Events for the Youth Gospel Meeting July 29-Aug. 1 Encouragement to the Church A young Scotsman was fighting for the light- weight boxing championship against an opponent that was six years younger. The match was held in Glas- gow, Scotland. I believe the Scotsman’s name was Jim Watts. From the beginning it was evident to all present that it was going to be a tough and closely contended bout. Then something strange happened. The men in the crowd began singing, very faintly at first but then it became louder and louder. They were singing a Scottish melody. They were singing encour- agement to their champion, and it worked for Watt won the match with a KO in the 12th round. Encouragement can be a great asset is aiding one another as children of God to keep on and not to give up; to continue the struggle against our spiritual foe that we might be able to say like the apostle Paul, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith” (II Tim. 4:7). Paul’s message to the church at Philippi in the fourth chapter, verses 1-9 is a message of encourage- ment, a message that we need today as much as the church at Philippi needed it nearly 2,000 years ago. First, it was encouragement to be steadfast. He began telling them, “Therefore, my beloved and longed-for brethren, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, beloved. 2 I implore Euodia and I implore Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. 3 And I urge you also, true companion, help these women who labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and the rest of my fellow work- ers, whose names are in the Book of Life” (Phil. 4:1-3; NKJV). Paul’s encouragement to be steadfast is made the more effective because of his obvious love for them. He addresses them as “My beloved brethren.” The word used here is agapao, the word used in the New Testament to describe the love that God has for Jesus and for mankind in general. It was the highest form of love and it described the “unconquerable benevolence” toward the one that is loved. He follows with his description of them as “My longed-for brethren.” We greatly desire to see those whom we love and Paul is merely repeating here what he had said earlier in chapter one and verse eight – “For God is my witness, how greatly I long for you all with the affection of Jesus Christ.” Then he calls them his “joy and crown.” Those brethren are the rea- son for Paul’s being joyous. Their care for and help for him and their continued faithfulness to God has caused Paul to be happy, to be filled with joy! -to be continued August 8– Serge Shoemaker –Prayer August 15– Austin Johnson –Bible Study August 22– Drew Kiser –Image SERIES Teaching Opportunity We are in need of a gentleman who would like to teach a class at St. Clair Prison.
