Please pray for the 40 youth and adults that are traveling this week. An Appointment with God Most of us have a calendar to keep up with our different appointments. It may be some medical appointment with a doctor, a dentist, or for some medical surgery or procedure. It may be some business appointment, or some social engage- ment. Even the church has a calendar to keep up with all the scheduled events that have been planned. Recently we here at Deerfoot have had Mission Sunday and Vacation Bible School. This coming Wednesday begins our summer series in which we have a different speaker each Wednesday. Our youth group left Friday for a campaign work with the North Tampa Church of Christ. July 9-14 will be out week at May- wood Christian Camp and on July 30 we have the beginning of our Gospel Meeting with Jeff Jenkins. On and on it goes with various Wedding Showers, and Baby Showers, Lads to Leaders/Lasses to Leaderettes and other special events. It’s too much to keep track of in our heads and some of it is just too important for us to forget or ignore. Sometimes we might have to change things and reschedule certain events. We also have regular appointments with God and the Lord Jesus Christ each first day of the week. The writer of Hebrews reminds us of this when he warned about forsaking such gatherings. “And let us consider one another to pro- voke unto love and to good works: 25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching” (Heb. 9:24, 25). The early church gathered together to worship God on the first day of each week (I Cor. 16:1, 2; Acts 20:7). This they did from the beginning of the church (Acts 2:42). There are also the appointments we have with death and with judgment. Again the Hebrew writer tells us that “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: 28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation” (Heb. 9:27, 28). As I wrote this I thought of a poem from one of my litera- ture classes in high school by Alan Seeger entitled “I Have a Rendezvous with Death.” It was not Seeger alone who has such an appointment but all of mankind has such a day. The apostle Paul told his audience at Athens, “And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: 31 Because he hath ap- pointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead” (Acts 17:30). The date is on God’s calendar. God alone knows the date. Our Lord said, “But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only” (Mt. 24:26). That is why it is so important that we each be ready for that day, by being ready every day. That is why we are commanded to repent. It is neither an invitation to re- pent nor a polite suggestion, it is a command! There have been appointments I have missed because I failed to record in on my calendar or put it in my weekly planner. However these are appointments we all will keep whether we remember or not. We do not know the date of our death nor do we know the time of Christ’s return and the judgment for all of us, but we will keep those appointments. That is why it is so important that we live in preparation for those days everyday of our exis- tence. The day has been set, the Judge has been ordained, the assurance of that event has been given and we are com- manded. Let all of us examine our own lives and act accord- ingly to be sure that each is ready for those appointments. MEET THE HARPS RICHARD & MARY Gabriel & James 7 weeks till They will be joining us on July 30, 2017
