For Goodness Sake
“Santa Claus is Coming to Town” is an upbeat
and joyful song. But if you pay attention to the lyrics,
you may actually find it rather disturbing. Santa Claus
and his minions stalk children year around to determine
their moral character and whether or not they should be
rewarded or punished for their behavior. Not exactly
light stuff for what sounds like a light-hearted children’s
song. But it appears clear that it was intended to
incentivize children to good behavior year around. Not
necessarily a bad thing. But it makes the line “so be
good for goodness sake” all the more puzzling. The
main idea behind the song is for children to be good all
year long so that when Santa comes they will be
rewarded with presents. But being “good for goodness
sake” is not about that. It has nothing to do with reward
or incentive. It brings up an important question: what
motivates us to behave morally? Are we “good for
goodness sake” or are we good for the sake of a reward?
Are we good simply to avoid punishment?
When we look at Scripture, it becomes clear that
the incentives of reward and punishment are powerful
and important. But are these incentives alone enough?
When Satan challenged Job’s morality before God, he
insisted that Job lived a life of convenient morality. Why
would Job not live morally when it resulted in an
exorbitant amount of blessings from God? (Job 1:9-10)
But without the reward, without the immediate
incentive, would Job be “good for goodness sake”? As
we know, Job held onto his integrity, and did not turn
to cursing God and to living a life of sin. For Job, being
good was a principled and sincere commitment to God
for life – come what may. When our lives get turned
upside down and blessings are removed, what is our
response? We may ask, what benefit is there to doing the
right thing when blessings are taken and are replaced
with sorrow?
For this reason, the love of good itself must be
present in the hearts of God’s people. As God’s Word
says, “Hate evil, love good…” (Amos 5:15a). To love
what is good goes beyond incentive. It is living and
knowing that doing what is right is best for
everyone in the long run – even when it is not rewarding
in the moment. Such love and commitment to goodness
transcends the troubles of this world – especially when
doing what is right is inconvenient.
Scripture tells us that God will not forget us
when we are morally committed to Him. He will
vindicate, justify, and reward us when we do what is
right (Heb. 6:10-12; Ps. 26:1). This doesn’t always come
immediately, and for that reason, we must be steadfast
in being “good for goodness sake.”
