Who’s Working Here?!
For every guy digging a hole, there’s at least 4
or 5 other guys actively “monitoring” the situation. For
every physician, there are a team of nurses, nurse
practitioners, and physician assistants doing his grunt
work. So, from low man on the totem pole to
overseeing manager, it’s not always immediately
apparent who is really doing the work. Should all get
equal credit for working? Who’s really pulling the
weight in different professions? The answer may vary
from circumstance to circumstance.
But more importantly, when it comes to working
for the Lord, who is actually doing the work? God or
us? Most Christians would likely say that any spiritual
work is God’s work – not ours. And for good reason.
God gives us life and breath (Acts 17:25) and the very
strength that we possess to serve Him (1 Pet. 4:11). Paul
seems to confirm this view when he calls the inclusion
of Christians in the kingdom of God as being “the work
of God” (Rom. 14:20). Makes sense. After all, God
deserves ultimate credit for any good that He
created and made possible. But does this mean that all
the Lord’s work is only to be understood as being His,
and His alone?
When we consider what God, Himself tells us,
the answer may surprise you. When you do the Lord’s
work, God’s Word tells us that you can consider it “your
work” (Col. 3:23; Heb 6:10; 1 Thess. 1:3) too. “The
work of the Lord” is identified as “your toil” in 1 Cor.
15:58. Even Paul calls the Corinthian church “my work
in the Lord” (1 Cor. 9:1). Do these words express a lack
of humility? Or is there another explanation?
Phil. 2:12-13 tells us to work out our own
salvation. But it also tells us that God is working in us,
both to will and to work. So, we must choose to work,
but God is ultimately the one empowering us to do so.
So, who’s working here? The answer is both God and
us. It must be understood however that since God and
Jesus gave us everything we have so that we can serve
them, they deserves credit first and foremost. This is
why Paul said in Rom. 15:18…
“For I will not presume to speak of anything
except what Christ has accomplished through me…”
God and Christ accomplish their work through us and
our willingness to participate in their work. For this
reason, God generously allows His work to be called our
work too – even though He deserves all the credit. We
are willing participants in God’s work (Phil. 1:5). So,
when we are working for the Lord, it is our work and
God’s work. Let us then take ownership in God’s work
so that God can work in us and through us as His hands
and feet on earth. ~Jeffrey Howell
