Words of Life
Our daily lives are often organized according to our
priorities. Our most important and pressing tasks receive
attention first, and then everything else follows. Anyone
who knows our daily routine will have a very
accurate idea of what we prioritize in life. There are
certain things that we almost never fail to neglect on a
daily basis – and for good reason. Many aspects of our
daily lives cannot be neglected without severe
consequences. For example, neglect eating long enough,
and you will die. This is so obvious that even the
greatest simpleton can understand this. But not all of
our vital needs are this obvious. For what mankind truly
needs to sustain his life is not physical in nature, but
rather, spiritual.
Jesus made this point abundantly clear when He spoke
these words to a manna-hungry crowd: “Do not work
for the food which perishes, but for the food which
endures to eternal life…” (John 6:27a). What kind of
food was Jesus referring to? Jesus explained later, “…
the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are
life” (John 6:63b). Jesus’ point was that only through
His Words and the Word of God (Mat. 4:4) can mankind
have everlasting life. What priority then could possibly
take precedence over the Word of God?! And yet, as
Christians, do our daily routines reflect the vitalness of
God’s Word to our lives?
It’s obvious to us that on the basis of God’s Word one
becomes a Christian and is born again (1 Pet. 1:23). But
what about after being born again? How vital is our rela-
tionship with God’s Word after this? According to James
1:21, we have to be continually receptive to the Word of
God if we want to be saved in the end. We must contin-
ue to feed on God’s Word in order to grow
towards salvation (1 Pet. 2:2). These facts from
Scripture teach us an exceedingly important point: Our
spiritual survival as well as our very life in the future
depends on our personal commitment to consuming
God’s Word. So how can we ensure that we do not fail
to be committed to God’s Word?
The Bible itself shows us what true commitment to
God’s Word looks like. Continual devotion (Acts 2:42),
daily examination (Acts 17:10-11), and daily
meditation (Ps. 1:1-2; Josh. 1:8) are Biblical examples
of true commitment to the Word of God. So as certain as
the fact that there is hardly a day that goes by without us
failing to eat, so it should be equally certain that a day
should not go by without us failing to feed on the Word
of God – which is even more vital to our existence. If
we meditate daily as God’s Word tells us to do, we will
certainly grow towards salvation and eternal life.
So, in this New Year, prioritize reading God’s Word
daily. Never forget that your very life depends on
continuing to consume God’s Word.
