ATTITUDES
According to the Funk and Wagnall’s Standard
Desk Dictionary the word “attitude” means “State of
mind, behavior, or conduct regarding some matter, as
indicating opinion or purpose.” We hear a great deal in
life about heart disease including arteriosclerosis
(hardening of the arteries) as the number one killer in
America. Zig Ziglar, American author, salesman, and
motivational speaker, once said that the “Hardening of
the attitudes is the most deadly disease on the face of
this earth.” William Clement Stone, a successful busi-
nessman, and philanthropist believed in the same idea
of the importance of one’s attitude in life. He said,
“There is little difference in people, but that little differ-
ence makes a big difference. The little difference is atti-
tude. The big difference is whether it is positive or
negative.”
Our attitude reveals our real self! Our attitude
comes out of the core of our being. The wise man Solo-
mon teaches, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is
he” (Prov. 23:7a). I once read an illustration about tak-
ing a jar of water and shaking it vigorously until the wa-
ter drips out. If one then asks the question, “Why did
the water leak out,” you may get different answers.
Some may suggest that it was because the lid was not
on tight enough, or perhaps there was a small hole in
the lid or jar. Still some might suggest that it was be-
cause the jar was shaken so vigorously. However, wa-
ter leaked out because it was water that was in the jar.
Now the point of that illustration is that the attitude that
is manifested in our lives is the attitude that we carry
inside ourselves. When our Lord was questioned on
one occasion as to why His disciples did not wash their
hands before eating Jesus said, “Not what goes into
the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the
mouth, this defiles a man" (Matthew 15:11). Later
Peter asked Jesus to explain the parable to them and
Jesus replied, “Are you also still without under-
standing? 17 "Do you not yet understand that what-
ever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and is
eliminated? 18 "But those things which proceed
out of the mouth come from the heart, and they de-
file a man. 19 "For out of the heart proceed evil
thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts,
false witness, blasphemies. 20 "These are the
things which defile a man, but to eat with un-
washed hands does not defile a man."
When we do or say something that we shouldn’t
we tend to react by saying, “Where did that come
from?” I didn’t mean that.” Time and again I have seen
public figures say something that they should not have
said, and later when they are forced to apologize, they
usually say something like, “I’m sorry. That’s not the
real me. That’s not how I really feel. It just happened in
a moment of anger. I was having a bad day.” But hav-
ing a bad day is not the cause. The “bad day” is just a
shaking of the jar that allows our attitude to be re-
vealed.
