Magazine One : Q Magazine
(Bauer Media)
Q Magazine Bauer Media
Publisher
Bauer

have a large headquarters in Hamburg, Germany and produce over
600 magazines, 400 digital products and 50 radio/TV stations around
the world. They distribute there magazines in many different ways for
example post. Bauer employ over 11,000 people across 17 different
countries. The company was founded in 1875. The current CEO of
Bauer is called Yvonne Bauer and she has an 85% share in the
company. The revenue Bauer produce per year is around 2.4 billion

they produced the first copy of the magazine in October of that year. Q

Market Position
Bauer media is the largest media company
in the UK. The evidence that supports this
is the facts that have been released on
Bauer’s website based on circulation from
July – December 2016. The facts stated
include “The World’s-biggest movie
magazine Empire continues to dominate
the film market” and “Iconic music bible
MOJO boosts its circulation by 4.65%”
Bauer also have two music magazines
dominating the market with Q magazine
having circulation figures of around 44,050
and Mojo magazine having around 70,445.
These circulation figures beat the
circulation figures of rival magazines such
as NME produced by IPC media which has
a circulation figure of only 15,000. This
displays how Bauer have more magazines
with a higher readership as their
magazines have a higher circulation figure.

Competitors
IPC Media could be classed as Bauers biggest competitors as IPC Media own large magazines that
focus on the same features that Bauers magazines focus on, for example Q (Bauer) and NME (IPC
Media) both report on new artists. IPC Media also competes with Bauer by producing over 60
iconic media brands across many platforms like print, online and mobile. Some figures that relate
to IPC Media are 26 million UK adults engage with the company in some way and 25 million visitors
to the portfolio of websites IPC Media own per month.
Wenner Media are not such a big competitor to Bauer. This is because they do not
own such a large range of products as a company such a Bauer or IPC Media.
Wenner Medias products include Rolling Stone music magazine, Men's Journal
magazine and US Weekly magazine. These products bring in around 46 million
readers each month. Wenners most famous product is their Rolling Stone magazine.
Rolling Stone magazine reports on music which could link to Q magazine.
Egmont compete with Bauer on a smaller scale. Although a large publishing
company only a very small amount of the products produced compete with Bauer,
for example We ❤ Pop. The magazine has circulation of 115,000. The magazine is
targeted at teenage girls aged 11-17. Egmont also produce large amounts of tv and
film. Mostly European and not English films but they have been involved with films
such as The Hunger Games : Mocking Jay Part 2.

Competitors (Continued)
IPC Media produce NME magazine. NME is a magazine that has a genre very similar to Q magazine.
The pop/rock magazine was founded in 1949 by Theodore Ingham. NME’s editor is called Mike
Williams and has been with the company since June 2012. NME release a magazine on a weekly
basis and have a circulation of around 15,000. NME is an English magazine and is produced in
Southwark, London
Wenner Media produce Rolling Stone magazine. The magazine was founded by Jann
Wenner in 1967. Rolling Stone magazine is an American magazine and is produced in New
York, USA. It is written in English and has a circulation of around 1,400,000. The main
purpose of the magazine is to produce interviews, reviews and stories about the rock and
roll genre of music
Egmont produce We ❤ Pop. The magazine is produced in Denmark and is written in
English. The magazine is released monthly. The main focus of the magazine is pop music
but also includes information about celebrities, fashion and gossip. The target audience of
the magazine is girls aged 11-17. The magazine puts exclusive backstage access, photos &
interviews into an easy to read format. Each issue also comes with a premium free gift,
exclusive reader offers and discounts. The magazine has a distribution of around 115,000
Purpose
Q magazines purpose is to mainly
report on music and artists. The
purpose can be clearly seen in the
strapline of the magazine. Q magazines
strapline is usually “The Worlds
Greatest Music Magazine” in this issue
the strapline is “The 10 Most Exciting
People In Music Now.” This strapline
could connote that Q magazine is
targeting a younger audience as it talks
about “Now” this links to a younger
audience because young people tend to
be more up to date with present day
music.
Genre
The genre of Q is quite varied as they
have previously reported on many
different styles of artists and music.
Mainly Q report on pop music and rock
music. Evidence of this links to issues
such as Plan B and Adele who are both
pop artists. The other issues contain
bands such as The Foo Fighters and artists
such as Paul McCartney.
As primary research I conducted a survey on the website
SurveyMonkey. This question is taken from the survey and it
demonstrates “what is your favourite genre of music?” the main
answer I received back was “Hip Hop” with 70% of people putting it as
there favorite genre. This relates to Q magazine as they focus on the
genre rock. This may mean Q magazine may not attract as many
readers as a magazine that focuses on the Hip Hop genre
Genre (Continued)
Form and Style
The layout of Q magazine is very consistent.
Every issue has the red background and white
text Q masthead in the top left corner with
the strapline “The Worlds Greatest Music
Magazine” written in a black box
underneath. There is then always a main
image in the center of the page. The main
headlines and the sub lines are then written
around the main image. The colours often
used are red, black and white. Inside the
magazine the form and style is also consistent
with features such as page numbers on every
page and images that contain star appeal on
most pages. The fonts used are always similar
and are always simple in order to stick with
Q’s professional and consistent form and
style. It is important for Q to keep consistent
in all their magazines in order to keep a
professional feel and keep customers happy
as they know they can expect quality from Q
Target Audience
According to socio-economic needs this magazine
would relate to categories B – E These categories
include middle class, lower middle class, skilled
working class, working class and casual/lowest grade
workers. Reasons behind this include category E
(casual/lowest grade workers) contains young
students aged 16 – 18 who are most likely to be the
most interested in the magazine due to their large
interest in music. The magazine stems to category B
(middle class) because this category includes teachers
that can have a large interest in music.
In the Katz’s uses and gratifications theory I believe
this magazine targets all the theories. This includes
personal identification as the audience can relate to
the interviews inside the magazine, inform and
educate as the audience learn something reading the
magazine and finally diversion as the audience escape
from reality when reading.
Target Audience (Continued)
According to Hartley’s seven subjectivities Q
magazine relates to the 3 main categories. These
categories include age, gender and class. Evidence of
this is Q’s audience is mostly 16 – 21 year olds, the
magazine applies to both genders and also applies to
around 5 different classes.
Finally using Maslow’s hierarchy of needs it is clear Q
magazine reaches out to each category on the list.
This includes social climbers who believe reading the
magazine will improve their status in society, care
givers where the reader sympathizes with the
situation of the celebrity in the magazine, explorers
who are driven by social change and finally survivors
who want to know if the person they are reading
about is ok.
Front Cover Deconstruction
The colour of the magazine
connotes that this particular
issue could be to stand out to an
older audience as Noel Gallagher
(Main Image Artist) is an artist of
a previous generation. Noel is
also wearing similar colours in his
picture which could link to the
background
This part of the magazine is
attractive to everyone as it
contains what else can be seen in
the magazine. The extra titles are
called cover lines. The cover lines
are effective as Q can attract
more readers as sometimes
readers may not be interested in
the main story in the magazine
This is the main image. The
image could connote the power
and presence of Q magazine
because of a full body image of
Noel Gallagher with his arms
crossed looking directly at the
camera. The image could also
connote that magazine is for
everyday people because Noel is
wearing everyday clothes, just
because he is a celebrity he is no
different
This area includes Q magazines
convergence, barcode, price and
month of issue. This is needed in
order to allow customers to
know the price of the magazine
and purchase the magazine. Also
the convergence is important as
it allows a customer to visit the Q
website
The Q masthead stands out to
people in shops. The colour red
connotes to hot which may mean
Q magazine knows what is hot
right now which attracts
customers as they want to know
about the newest music. The font
of the Q is sophisticated so could
connote to an older audience.
The strapline of Q is “The worlds
greatest music magazine” which
can be seen on every issue. The
word “greatest” shows that Q is a
good music magazine because it
can advertise that it is the
“greatest”
The main cover lines are
important as readers then know
the main story in the issue of the
magazine. Important as people
know what they are buying
Content
Q magazine contains different features every month of
its release. This section would contain interviews with
artists, reports on live concerts and also top people in
music at the present time. There is also a section in the
magazine that is written in every copy this includes,
subscriptions, music based crosswords and the 10
commandments. The crosswords main use is to keep
the audience engaged in the magazine, another
feature produced monthly is Q mail this feature also
engages readers as it allows them to write in and ask
any questions they have.
Double Page Spread
Deconstruction
Star Appeal : The use
of Ed Sheeran attracts
a male and female
audience to the
magazine as the style
of Ed’s music is based
on both genders. Also
using Ed Sheeran is a
good idea as he has
become one of the
biggest stars in a small
amount of time and
lots of people want to
find out more about
him and his life. When
audiences see this
they will be
automatically engaged
Pull Quote : The pull
quote is a quote from
the interview. This is
used to attract readers
because then they
want to know why and
how Ed is “bringing
ginger back”
Drop Capital : The
drop capital is a big
bold letter that is
the first letter that
comes from the
first word in the
letter. This drop
capital is effective
because the colour
red stands out and
the letter “I”
connotes how Ed
will be talking
about himself and
this is what readers
will be reading the
magazine for.
Page Number : The
page number is
used to inform
readers what page
number they are
on. This links to the
contents page as it
will tell readers
where to go veer
page numbers
Stand First : The stand first is a short, captivating introduction to the interview so the reader will
know what, who, why and when about the interview. Then they find out more when reading
Website Annotations
The stand out feature on
Q magazines website is
the large image of the
latest issue of the
magazine. This is good
because it allows readers
to see if they would be
interested in purchasing
the magazine from the
comfort of there own
home as it is online.
The familiar logo of Q is
the first thing that is
visible on the website.
This is so that visitors of
the website can see they
have come to the right
place to find out all
about Q
Underneath the image of
the latest issue there is a
small paragraph
explaining about the
latest issue in more
detail. Once again this is
effective because it allow
customers to be sure
about purchasing the
issue of the magazine
This part of the website
allows a visitor of the
website to order a hard
copy of the latest issue
or a digital copy. The
digital copy is a good
idea due to the large
amount of people using
technology. It is available
on platforms such as
Apple Newsstand, Kindle
Fire and Google Play. In
order to do this the
consumer would click on
the red text and be
redirected to a page
where they can order
their chosen format
This feature allows
consumers to click on a
social media icon that
will redirect a person to
the specific website
clicked on where Q will
have a page to advertise
their magazine. For
example click on twitter
and be taken to Q’s
twitter page
Website Annotations

This headline comes from
the main story of the
latest edition of Q. it is
the first thing readers
read on the web page
which is smart advertising
as then people have to
purchase a copy to find
more about the headline.
The navigation tool
on the website is
filled with many
options to keep
visitors of the
website on the site
for longer periods of
time as there is
interesting subjects
available to see. For
example “Track Of
The Day”
On the right hand side
there is an option to click
that will re-direct users to
a page where they can
pay to subscribe to Q. For
example a yearly
subscription can be
purchased.
There is also many
options to click on
whilst on the home
page of the website,
once again this is in
order to keep users
on the site for
longer. Ways of
doing this are the
playlist Q provide for
people to listen to
On the right hand side
of the website there is
a search option. This is
where users can
search the whole Q
website for there
desired topic they
want to listen to or
read
Synergy
4,189 Subscribers
11,600 Followers
The secondary research I have conducted was to see how
many followers, likes and subscribers Q magazine have
on their social networking accounts.
The stats I found were
•4,189 Subscribers on YouTube
•11,600 Followers on Instagram
•128,000 Followers on Twitter
•122,737 Likes on Facebook
These facts display that Q magazine have an ever
increasing following on social networking. This being
down to the fact technology is becoming used more and
more everyday. This online following of around 260,000
people connotes to how Q magazine have made online
copies of their magazine available . This means now
customers can subscribe online to Q and read the
magazine on any platform of choice. Some examples
include the kindle and the iPad. I believe as Q understand
they target a young audience releasing issues of the
magazine has benefitted them as they are keeping
themselves up to date with the youth of today
Email Evidence
Here I show evidence of emailing the
4 emails addresses I could find for
people who work in Bauer. These
people are
•Cat Martin, Communications
Director, Bauer Media
•Jonny Silver , Communications
Manager, Bauer Media
•Genevieve Potter, Head of Internal
Communications, Bauer Media
•Sophie Ramm, Commercial
Marketing Manager, Bauer Media
I emailed the workers at Bauer in
order to find out about the
production process of Q magazine
Email Replies
These email replies display evidence that I did not get a reply that informed me about
Q magazines production process. This means that I have had to visit a website in
order to learn about the production process of a magazine.
Production Process
There are 9 stages in the production process of the magazine.
Stage 1 – Date of Publication
This is where the magazines publisher (Bauer) set a date of publication for the magazine. The date of
publication is the date the publisher want the magazine to be released as a quality and finished product for the
general public. Once this date has been chosen there is now a schedule to complete the magazine.
Stage 2 - Managing the Schedule
As Q magazine wants to remain a top magazine, Bauer need to successfully stick to the date of publication. The
schedule should include time for mishaps so that if mishaps occur the magazine will still be released on time.
Stage 3 - Editorial and Budgetary Decision
This step is where the magazine’s editorial team begins assembling and deciding what topics will be covered in
the magazine. After deciding the types of articles, topics, news stories, illustrations and photographs that will
be used in the magazine, the team makes decisions of a budget and how they will stick to it. The team will look
at the money that is available to them and the most efficient way to spend it towards the production of the
magazine.

production-process/
Production Process
(Continued)
Stage 4 - Content Acquisition
The content acquisition stage is the stage where the content will be gathered for a magazine. It is also at this
stage that artwork and graphics are also worked on. The artwork includes illustrations and pictures that are
going to be placed in the magazine. Graphics are the pictures or images that are designed with a computer
program. Also at this stage research is made by journalists and reporters into the topics and events being
covered. The research can be done via the use of the internet and news databases. Meetings are also arranged
with interviewees
Stage 5 – Sub Editing
Sub editing focuses on quality control. This is the media organization sub-editors job; if there is no sub-editor.
Quality control includes checking the accuracy of all facts in the articles, making sure that words are properly
spelled, making sure that grammar and punctuation are used correctly, making sure that all articles follow the
house-style and working on the page layout.
Stage 6 – Page Layout
A special team responsible for page layouts is called the layout staff. Their job is to typeset and layout the
various pages that come together in the magazine. In performing this task, they use desktop computers to do
this. It is at this stage that adverts from advertisers are placed into the content.
http://hosbeg.com/the-magazine-
production-process/
Production Process
(Continued)
Stage 7 - Proofreading
The next stage is the proofreading. The editorial department will print out a hardcopy of the magazine so they
can read through to find and correct any mistakes in it. Any mistake that is spotted is corrected on the softcopy.
The editorial team keeps proofreading until every member is satisfied that all mistakes have been corrected.
Stage 8 – Sub Editing
The soft copy of the entire magazine is sent to the printer which will print the magazine. The company first
prints a few copies and sends them to the publication’s editor for checking once again. If the editor is satisfied
with the printer’s proofs, then the green light is given to the printer for mass printing to commence.
Stage 6 – Page Layout
The last stage of the production process. The printing company, having finished with the printing of the
magazines will package them neatly and send them to a warehouse. From the warehouse, the magazines are
then distributed and then sold to the public.

The retail outlets that sell Q magazine include WHSmiths,

44,000. It is written in English language. The magazine links to the music industry by writing
about new music, music compilations and live concert reviews.
http://www.qthemusic.com/
Purpose
XXL magazines purpose is to mainly
report on music and artists. The purpose
can be clearly seen in the strapline of
the magazine. XXL magazines strapline is
“Hip Hop on a Higher Level” this
highlights how XXL is about music as the
word “Hip Hop” demonstrates a genre of
music. This strapline could connote that
XXL magazine is targeting everyone as
“Hip Hop” has a large target audience.
The word “Higher” connotes to people
that XXL are the best as they are on a
better level than other hip hop magazine.
The strapline may be to reach out to a
younger audience because young people
tend to be more up to date with present
day music.
Genre
The genre of XXL is largely
based on a Rap, R&B and Hip
Hop genre. XXL does not vary a
large amount. Evidence of this
links to issues such as Lil
Wayne, Notorious Big and Nas.
These artists all produce similar
music that doesn't’t appeal to
very young and elderly people.
The form and style of XXL magazine is
very consistent. Evidence of this is the
bright red XXL logo being in the top
corner of every issue. The colour red
could connote that XXL are trying to make
their magazine stand out because red
catches peoples eyes in retail stores. Also
the font is always similar on XXL’s front
page this is because people then can spot
it easily and they know what they are
buying. There is also always a main image
on the front cover that is very clear and
uses the technique of star appeal. Around
the main image are the headlines and sub
lines of the issue of the magazine. Inside
the magazine the from and style
continues as there is a content page on
every issue and page numbers on every
page. XXL doesn't’t always put a strapline
on their magazine which changes the
form and style.
Target Audience
According to socio-economic needs this magazine
would relate to categories B – E These categories
include middle class, lower middle class, skilled
working class, working class and casual/lowest

category E (casual/lowest grade workers) contains
young students aged 16 – 18 who are most likely
to be the most interested in the magazine due to
their large interest in music. The magazine stems

celebrity in the magazine, explorers who
are driven by social change and finally
survivors who want to know if the person
they are reading about is ok.
Front Cover Deconstruction
The colour and layout of the
magazine connotes a mysterious
feeling as the dark colours and
the way Jay-Z has his hood up
reveals nothing about him so
readers have to purchase an issue
so they can read the secrets that
are inside
This part of the magazine is
attractive to everyone as it
contains what else can be seen in
the magazine. The extra titles are
called cover lines. The cover lines
are effective as XXL can attract
more readers as sometimes
readers may not be interested in
the main story in the magazine
The close up main image links to
the strapline of the magazine
because people believe as Jay – Z
is famous he is on a “higher”
level then they are. This makes
people want to read the
magazine because people want
to understand how to be on his
level. The star appeal of the
image will also attract Jay – Z fans
as they can get an insight into his
life reading the issue
This area includes XXL magazines
convergence, barcode, price and
month of issue. This is needed in
order to allow customers to
know the price of the magazine
and purchase the magazine. Also
the convergence is important as
it allows a customer to visit the
XXL website
The XXL masthead stands out.
This is because the red colour
connotes excitement. The size of
the text also makes the magazine
stand out because as the font is
big people believe the magazine
is big to. This means it would
have the best information inside
The strapline of XXL is “Hip-Hop
on a higher level” which can not
be seen on every issue. The word
“higher” connotes the level that
XXL is on. This increases
readership because people
believe reading the magazine will
improve there social status.
The main cover lines are
important as readers then know
the main story in the issue of the
magazine. Important as people
know what they are buying
Content
The content of XXL differs every month an issue is
released. Unlike Q magazine they do not have an
section of the magazine that is published every
time an issue is released. XXL’s content includes
interviews, backstage information and insights into
artists lives. Every issue has a main story that can
be seen by looking at the headline on the front of
the magazine. The main image also links to the
headline as it is always of the artist that will be the
main story. The side stories that are also posted on
the front of the magazine are listed on the
contents page with a brief paragraph underneath
explaining the story in more detail. The main story
also returns on the contents page as there is once
again an image of the artist that will be covered as
the main story. There is also a pull quote from the
main story on the content page. For example the
issue that featured 50 Cent and Soulja Boy has an
image of the both the artists on the content page
with the pull quote “if there wasn't no 50 Cent,

Synergy
The secondary research I have conducted was to see how many
followers, likes and subscribers XXL magazine have on their social
networking accounts.
The stats I found were
•636,639 Subscribers on YouTube
•763,000 Followers on Instagram
•1.1 million Followers on Twitter
•1,509,342 Likes on Facebook
These facts display that XXL magazine have an ever increasing
following on social networking. This being down to the fact
technology is becoming used more and more everyday. This online
following of around INSERT people connotes to how XXL magazine
have made online copies of their magazine available . This means now
customers can subscribe online to XXL and read the magazine on any
platform of choice. Some examples include the kindle and the iPad. I
believe as XXL understand they target a young audience releasing
issues of the magazine has benefitted them as they are keeping

Email Evidence
This image displays the
evidence that I emailed XXL in
order to try to learn about
the production process of the
magazine. I emailed
XXL@xxlmag.com as this is
XXL’s email address for
general questions, press
and/or fraud alerts.

Retail Outlets
The retail outlets that sell XXL magazine include ASDA,
Morrison's and HMV. These shops are local to most people and
also are mostly large companies.
LO 1 Conclusion
In LO1 I have investigated and research two different publishing
companies and the music magazines they produce. The first was Bauer
Media who produce Q magazine. The second was Townsquare media
and XXL magazine. I first looked at the information behind the
publishing companies. This included information about them, their
market position and their competitors. I then went on to discuss
further in depth about the magazine. This included the magazines
purpose, genre and target audience. Later on I analyzed the inside and
front cover of a magazine by deconstructing a front cover, contents
page and a double page spread. I also deconstructed the magazines
websites. Finally I looked at the production process of the magazines
and the retail outlets they are sold at.

Mood Board - Fusion
Mood Board Conclusion - Fusion
The use of this image was in order to display the kind of artist and genres of music. Chris
Brown (Left) is a hip hop artist. This links to my summary of ideas as the decided genre of my
first music magazine is hip hop. The image also links to fashion. I have included fashion in my
magazine ideas because upon conducting a survey on the website
https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/ (SurveyMonkey) the feed back I received for the question
“what other information would you like to see included in a magazine” the most selected
option was fashion. This connotes how I could gain an audiences attention by including the
features they are most interested in inside the magazine.
The use of this second image is to mainly focus on the music that will be featured inside my
music magazine. The album “2014 Forest Hills Drive” by the artist J Cole is a hip hop album.
This once again links to my summary of ideas because as stated the main genre of my music
magazine (Fusion) is hip hop. The image also displays some kind of features that will be
visible in my music magazine as the image is of an album cover. This links to how I will review
albums in my music magazine.
Mood Board - MMH
Mood Board Conclusion - MMH
This image demonstrates the album cover for JME’s album “Integrity”
I have used this image in my mood board as the artist JME is known
for the grime industry. This is the kind of music I will include inside my
magazine.
This image demonstrates the artist Skepta, I have selected this image
because not only is Skepta an artist who produces music that relates
to the genre of grime. But he also is a fashion icon in the grime
industry. I will be including fashion in my magazine due to the results
of a survey I created on the website SurveyMonkey
(https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk) when asking the question “What
other information would you like to see included in a magazine” the
highest receive answer was “Fashion” with a 65% answer rate.
Inspiration Magazine : Fusion
I have chosen this copy of XXL to be my inspiration
magazine for my first magazine, Fusion.
The reason I have chosen this magazine as
inspiration is because I believe it is good at
capturing the audiences eye. The first reason I
believe it captures the eye is because the main
image is a large headshot. This means that fans of
Kendrick Lamar can see that he is the main story in
the magazine without reading any text. This means
that Lamar’s fans may be encouraged to buy the
magazine. The headshot also slightly covers the
XXL logo demonstrating to people who are not
fans of Kendrick Lamar that he is a powerful artist
because he is allowed to cover the logo of a
popular brand. Secondly the magazine is eye
catching because the background colours of the
front page are different to the normal dull colours
on music magazines. The colours may connote that
the article about the artist inside is the most
interesting available as the colours are interesting.
The one section I will not be following of this
magazine is the font style. I believe the text around
the artist is not interesting enough to draw
audiences to the stories inside the magazine
What will I ‘repeat’ Steve Neale (1980)
Magazine 1, Fusion
The things I will repeat to
make my first magazine,
Fusion, look effective are
the cover lines, the quote
from the magazine
interview with an artist,
the barcode, an image of
the artist inside my
magazine and finally the
colours of the magazine
(pink and green) I have
chosen to not repeat the
font style of the main
heading. This is because I
believe it is boring and
unattractive to the
audience
Inspiration Magazine : MMH
I have chosen this magazine because as my
second magazine of inspiration because I
believe it will be easy to recreate. The simplicity
behind the magazine is also effective because it
captures an audiences eye better as there is
less to look at which may distract the audience.
This magazine also makes it clear who is the
topic in the magazine as the title “TRAVIS
SCOTT Rage Against The Machine” is clearly
visible to people passing by. This means whilst
on the shelves in the shops if a Travis Scott fan
sees the magazine they are likely to buy it. If it
wasn’t clear who the magazine was based on it
may reduce sales. The pink background may
connote that the magazine is not just targeted
at a male audience, as stereotypically the hip
hop/rap genre targets a young black male, it
may also be targeted a the females interested
in Travis Scott. I believe I should recreate this
because it will attract more people to my
magazine. In this issue I will also recreate how
XXL use a red box for the logo because it makes
it stand out.
What will I ‘repeat’ Steve Neale (1980)
Magazine 2, MMH
The things I will
repeat to make my
first magazine,
MMH, look
effective are the
cover lines, the
small paragraph
that explains what
is inside the
magazine, the
barcode, the font
used for the
magazine
headline, an image
of the artist inside
my magazine and
finally the colours
of the magazine
(pink)
Form and style
The from and style of both of my magazines
will be very similar. This means in my first
music magazine, Fusion, I will include my
logo on every page an will also include page
numbers on every page. I will then carry this
idea over into my second music magazine,
MMH, and include my logo and page
numbers on every page in the magazine.
The inspiration behind this comes from
issues of XXL magazine and issues of NME
magazine doing this. As these two magazine
brands are my magazines of inspiration I
believe I should follow there style in order
for magazine to be successful.
The form and style I will design myself is my
front cover of my magazines. For example
different use of fonts, different style of logo
and main image having a different layout.
This is important as it demonstrates a
difference which could connote to some
readers of a magazine that it is something
new and fresh to read.
Target Audience
Socio-economic Needs
The categories from socio-economic needs I will intend to target are C1, C2, D and E. This includes the Lower Middle Class,
Skilled Working Class, Working Class and Casual/Lowest Grade Workers. I have chosen these categories because I believe it
targets a wider audience than attempting to target groups A and B (Upper Middle Class and Middle Class). This is because there
is a very small number of people in these classes and often they do not involve themselves in the Hip Hop genre. There is a
guarantee my magazine would be successful with other categories due to the success of other magazines such as NME and XXL.
Katz Uses and Gratification Theory
Inside my magazine I will attempt to use techniques that will attract people in all categories of Katz Uses and Gratification
Theory. This includes Personal Identification, Personal Relationship, Inform and Educate and Diversion. To attract people from the
Personal Identification category I will post stories in my magazine that the audiences can relate to. To Inform and Educate people
I will post new stories about new facts to guarantee readers will learn something when reading my magazine. Finally I will make
my magazine captivating so that readers can escape from reality when immersing in the text. This connotes to the Diversion
category of Katz Theory
Hartley’s Seven Subjectivities
I will focus on the three main categories in Hartley’s Seven Subjectivities. These three categories are Age, Gender and Class.
Age – 16 to 21 year olds. I will focus on this age category because these ages connote to the ages where my selected magazine
genre, Hip Hop, is most popular.
Gender – Male. I have selected a male target audience because readers can then relate themselves to the people inside the
magazine as the majority of people inside the magazine will be of this gender. This connotes to the person identification category
in Katz Uses And Gratifications Theory.
Class – I will target a lower class as this connotes to intending to target categories C1, C2, D and E from Socio-economic Needs.
This includes the Lower Middle Class, Skilled Working Class, Working Class and Casual/Lowest Grade Workers.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
I will intend to target every category in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs in my target audience so I can have a large amount of
readers of my magazine. These categories include Social Climbers, Caregivers, Explorers and Survivors. The main two focus
groups from Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs I will focus on are Caregivers and Survivors. This is because it easier to share
information with them. To reach out to Survivors I will make sure readers know the person in the magazine is okay. I will then
reach out to Caregivers by creating stories which they can sympathise about the situation.

Fusion Front Cover
I have decided to design my front covers and double page spreads in the
same way just with different colour schemes. This means I will chose my
magazine front cover and double page spread based on the most effective
colour scheme. The scheme I have chose to follow is the purple and green
gradient for my front cover and my double page spread.
Fusion Double Page Spread
In order to make my magazine flow I have selected the purple and green

hand drawn drafts. As I had already used the purple to green gradient for my
first magazine, Fusion, I selected the pink to white gradient colour scheme for
my second magazine MMH.
MMH Double Page Spread
Once again to make my magazine flow I chose the pink colour scheme for my
magazines double page spread. This is a technique chosen in order to keep
the audience interested whilst reading the magazine.

LO2 Conclusion
LO2 has allowed me to display the process of me beginning to create my magazine.
This meant I began to gather resources and ideas I wish to place on and in my
magazine. I started by brainstorming ideas onto a mind map which allowed me to see
the ideas together. I then linked these ideas to come up with two magazine ideas. I
summarized my ideas on a summary of ideas slide. Next I looked at fonts I intended to
use on my magazine. I then created two mood boards, one for each magazine I am
creating, these mood boards had images I wised to include on or inside my magazine.
After this I came up with some magazines of inspiration which I will follow when
creating my magazines, in order to copy some segments of the magazine I stated what
I would repeat on a slide. Next I thought of the target audience of my magazines, I
chose young men as the target audience as these are the people they may be
interested in the music genre I selected for my magazine. Finally I moved on to
designing my magazine. I drew hand drawn drafts for each magazine. This included a
double page spread and a front cover. I created a hand drawn draft as it is a quick,
cheap and simple way to get a rough idea my magazine will look presentable. Next I
created a graphic layout as I was happy with the design of the hand drawn draft. I
once again created a double page spread and front cover for each magazine. I used
graphic layouts before using Photoshop to save time as looking at the graphic layout
revealed to me that my magazines will look good digitally.

The colour scheme I have chosen to use for my magazine fusion is white, green and

background colours on my magazine. I will keep this colour scheme consistent in order
to keep the magazine professional. When using the green and purple I will link them
together using a gradient.
Font Style
The font I will use for all of the text inside my magazine is Euphemia UCAS. I once
again will use this on all pages inside my magazine to make it consistent and
professional. For my masthead I have chosen a font of the website DaFont. The font
style is called Kelvinized. I will use my masthead on every page next to the page

I’m pretty good thanks for asking, How did the last concert from your “Money Making Tour” go last night?
It was lit! Loads of crazy people
We heard! Girls jumping up on stage trying to share the love with you
Yeah…That’s how I like it
Anyway, down to business. The new album “Jhezus” straight to number one, how does that make you feel?
The support of the fans has been amazing, to get to number one in the first week is crazy. There are so many other albums that could of done it.
Speaking of other albums, you knocked Meek Mills of the number one spot and we’ve heard there's been some beef on twitter
Some artists are all about themselves, never give respect to new comers in the music business…if I didn't deserve number one Drake would
never of took me on his tour to be his support act.
We here at Fusion believe you deserve that number one spot!
Thank you
Now, more questions, is there any period in your life that has been inspiring on your music?
So many moments. That’s what the albums about, my life! All the hurt and pain, all the happy and good times and especially the times with
friends. But the track “Carvery in Spain” is one of the ones that really tell the story about some of my favorite times, I guess you guys will have to
give it a listen to find out more.
Interesting that you mentioned “Carvery in Spain” because a little bird has told us that It is your favorite song on the new album. Would you
like to quote on that?
It is my favorite track by a long way, you’re right, without reveling to much its just the memories it brings back, the lyrics speak to me and I just
hope the people are out there now enjoying it just as much as I enjoyed making it
Finally, we want to know what persuaded you to join the A$AP Mob?
It wasn’t about what persuaded me, its about what persuaded them
Expand on that, reveal it to us, what are your true feelings behind being a member?
Excitement mainly, its an unreal feeling to be working with the people that gave me so much inspiration for my music. I remember featuring on
A$AP Rocky’s track way back and thinking nothing of it, but when I got that text telling me to join the Mob and release an album I was running
round naked cause I was so happy I had the guys from the Mobs support
Were happy to hear that everything worked out well for you, you deserve it, thank you for speaking to us today!
Thank you, I enjoyed it
We enjoyed to, carry on making that great quality music and we at Fusion will be sure to come for a second interview
That sounds great

Chosen Magazine
These images display my chosen magazine, MMH,
front cover and double page spread. I have
selected this magazine as I personally feel it is my
stronger piece of work and it looks the most
professional.
House Style
Colour Scheme
The colour scheme have decided to use for my second magazine is pink, white and
black. The way I will use these colours in my magazine are have white and black font
against a pink and white gradient. I have chosen to use black font on top of where the
areas are white in order to make the text stand out. I will use this kind of colour
scheme on my double page spread and my front cover in my magazine. I will link the
pink and white colour together by using a gradient
Font Style
I have selected several font styles that look similar to use on the front cover on MMH
magazine. The first font style I have used on my magazine is for the masthead. This
font was found on the website DaFont, it is called York White letter. To use this on my
magazine I changed the colour of the surrounding box to red rather than black. Next I
used the font Abadi MT Condensed Extra Bold to write all the text inside my magazine
and also on the front cover as cover lines. Finally as the main headline of my magazine
I have used the font Blackoak Std. I added and effect of a stroke to the text stand out
on the page

Magazine Interview
Morning OMEGA, How are you?

It was lit! Loads of crazy people

Anyway, down to business. The new EP “Local Invasion” straight to number one, how does that make you feel?
The support of the fans has been amazing, to get to number one in the first week is crazy. There are so many other albums that could of done it.
Speaking of other albums, you knocked Dave of the number one spot and we’ve heard there's been some beef on twitter

We here at MMH believe you deserve that number one spot!

Now, more questions, is there any period in your life that has been inspiring on your music?
So many moments. That’s what the albums about, my life! All the hurt and pain, all the happy and good times and especially the times with
friends. But the track “My Time” is one of the ones that really tell the story about some of my favorite times, I guess you guys will have to give it
a listen to find out more.
Interesting that you mentioned “My time” because a little bird has told us that It is your favorite song on the new EP. Would you like to quote
on that?
It is my favorite track by a long way, you’re right, without reveling to much its just the memories it brings back, the lyrics speak to me and I just
hope the people are out there now enjoying it just as much as I enjoyed making it
Finally, we want to know what persuaded you to join BBK?
It wasn’t about what persuaded me, its about what persuaded them
Expand on that, reveal it to us, what are your true feelings behind being a member?
Excitement mainly, its an unreal feeling to be working with the people that gave me so much inspiration for my music. I remember featuring on
JME’s track way back and thinking nothing of it, but when I got that text telling me to join BBK and release an EP I was running round naked
cause I was so happy I had the guys from BBK support
Were happy to hear that everything worked out well for you, you deserve it, thank you for speaking to us today!
Thank you, I enjoyed it
We enjoyed to, carry on making that great quality music and we at MMH will be sure to come for a second interview
That sounds great
Step By Step
Step One: When I began to make my magazine front cover I used my magazine of inspiration, hand drawn drafts and
graphic layouts as inspiration. I used the paint brush tool with an opacity of 50% and made the brush soft. I then
increased the size of the brush so the spread of the colour will be greater. I chose a soft brush in order to make the
colours blend together well. In order to make the background look as much like my inspiration magazine as possible I
used the eye drop tool on my magazine of inspiration background.
Step Two: After creating the background I added my main image to my front cover. I used the quick selection tool to
remove the background of the image. In order to make the image stand out against the background I added a stroke
and a drop shadow to the image.
I then added the logo of my magazine on a layer behind my main image. To create my logo I used the shape tool to
create a red rectangular box for the text “MMH” to go inside. To add the text I used the text tool and used the
“Calibri (Body)” font to create a bold designed font. In order to make my logo stand out I added a drop shadow
effect to the red rectangle outlining the “MMH” title
The fourth step to creating my front cover was to add my strapline “Make Music Happen” underneath the logo of
my magazine. In order to add this I used the text tool and typed the the strapline underneath my logo in the same
font I used in the logo of my magazine “Calibri (Body)”. I also placed this behind my main image.
Step By Step (Continued)
The fifth step in creating my magazine front cover was to add a barcode to my front cover. I did this by inserting a
rectangle shape in white with the shape tool and placing the image of a barcode on top of this shape. I then
added the price, £3.99, the social media account, @MMH_MAG (For Twitter and Instagram) and finally the social
media logos.
Next I added the puff promotion to the
front of my magazine, 1 year free of Spotify,
which would be available to win inside the
magazine. I inserted the Spotify logo and
curved the text “WIN WIN WIN” around it.
The next step of creating my front cover was to use a text box to create my main headline of my magazine. I used
the text tool and typed my heading “OMEGA LOCAL INVASION EP” in order to make this stand out I added a
stroke in the colour black behind the text. I used the window character and reduced the size of the gaps between
the text. Finally I tilted the text at an angle in order to make it more interesting for the audience to view
The second to last step of creating my front cover was to add the left hand side cover lines. In order to do this I
used the text tool and typed in the cover line. To make it interesting to the reader I changed the colour of the font
from white to black halfway through the cover line. In order to keep my front cover consistent I used the “Calibri
(Body)” font again and made it bold.
In order to finish my magazine front cover I
created the right hand side cover lines. Once
again I used the “Calibri (Body)’ font to keep
consistency and used the white and black text
colours in order to keep my magazine
interesting. I also used the the shape tool to
create the red line which break up my cover
lines. I added a plus sign that was an intricate
design to keep my magazine interesting.

Printing Quotes And Costs
The image above demonstrates a rough estimate on how much it will cost to print and
deliver my magazines ready for distribution to customers. The estimated total to print
15,000 copies of my magazine would be £8093 to £9712. This price is then increased to
around £9000 as there is a £737 delivery charge
https://print24.com/uk/product/magazines/
Distribution To Retailer Costs
After researching distribution to retailer costs I discovered there was no set
fee in order to send out my magazine to retailers. This is partially because this
is my first magazine.
Advertising Revenue
Advert Style Cost
Half Page £2750
Full Page 13 £5000
Double Page Spread 4 £9000
Inside my magazine I have 21 pages of advertisements. This is
based over 61 pages. 13 of my advertisements are full page and
the other 4 advertisements are double page spread, adding up
to 8 more pages. 13 full page advertisements creates £65,000
revenue for the business. 4 double page advertisements
creates £36,000 in revenue for the business. This added
together creates £101,000 in revenue for the company. This
over a 12 month period generates £1,212,000 for the business.
£5000 (Full Page Advert Cost) x 13 (Number Of Full Page Adverts) = £65,000
£9000 (Double Page Spread Advert Cost) x 4 (Number Of Double Page Spread Adverts) = £36,000
£65,000 (Money Raised From Full Page Adverts) + £36,000 (Money Raised From Double Page Spread Adverts) = £101,000
£101,000 (Total Money Raised Per Magazine) x 12 (Months In The Year) = £1,212,000
Social Media Adverts
Using social media to advertise my magazine will be extremely beneficial as it
will not cost any further money to advertise. Often creating a social media
account is free. For example Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Pages can be
made on these social media websites for free and readers of the magazine
can decide whether or not they want to follow or like the page to get regular
updates about my magazine.
Another free social media website I can use is YouTube. Although free to
make account some time and money may need to be invested in creating
videos and advertisements for the channel based around my magazine.
YouTube is extremely useful because as people subscribe and watch videos
based on my magazine it can generate revenue, not only from people
watching the videos themselves but it will make people want to purchase my
magazine.
Overall Costs – Profit and Loss

Staff £315,500

Advertising £3,640
Total £384,568

The following table
demonstrates my

where I can work out
if my business has
made a loss or profit
in the first year. In
order to find my net
profit I took my
expenses away from
my income. This left
me with a £887,282
profit.
Legal and Ethical Issues
When creating my magazine there are rules to which I
and my magazine must follow. This is so there will be a
lack of complaints to deal with when the magazine is
released. This means that no harm or offence will be
experienced from any of the magazines consumers. One
of the main rules when creating magazines “Particular
care must be taken to avoid causing offence on the
grounds of race, religion, gender, sexuality, disability or
age”
One ethnicity issue my magazine may face is the heavy
involvement of more black ethnicity artist than white
ethnicity.
Copyright ©
Copyright is the procedure where somebody obtains a
legal right to any kind of item. This then protects the item
from being copied by a third party assessors. Copyright can
be used to protect many items such as magazines, music
and images.
For Example, Q magazine have copyright on all of the
magazines they produce. Evidence of this can be seen on
Q’s magazines website. The footer of the website states
“©Bauer Consumer Media. All Rights Reserved“
This means that Bauer, Q magazines publisher, have set
laws to protect their products. Looking at the statement
“All Rights Reserved” this means nothing that Bauer
media create can be copyrighted as it is all of their content.
I will need to obtain copyright on my magazine in order to
make sure all my products are safe from being stolen from
any other people or companies.
http://www.qthemusic.com
Watermark
I added the watermark to the front cover
of my magazine in order to protect the
image. This watermark protects the
image as upon trying to edit the image
the watermark would make this
impossible. I needed to watermark this
image because of copyright.
Watermarking this image also means I
am following the data protection act
1998 by keeping the image protected as
stated in my photography consent form
Data Protection Act 1988
The data protection act controls how personal information is used by organizations,
businesses or the government.
• Used fairly and lawfully
• Used for limited, specifically stated purposes
• Used in a way that is adequate, relevant and not excessive

Editors Code of Practice
The editors code of practice are a set of rules by IPSO that all magazines and newspapers have to follow
when creating their products. The latest editors code of practice came into effect on 1st January 2016.
There are 16 segments to the rules, these include…
•Accuracy
•Privacy
•Harassment
•Intrusion into grief or shock
•Reporting suicide
•Children
•Children in sex cases
•Hospitals
•Reporting of crime
•Clandestine devices and subterfuge
•Victims of sexual assault
•Discrimination
•Financial journalism
•Confidential sources
•Witness payments in criminal trials
•Payment to criminals
Calendar Events
I have chosen to release my magazine on the 2nd January 2017. This is
because it is the start of a new week in the new year. I have also chosen to
release my magazine on this day as there are no other calendar events
schedule, such as public holidays, that may reduce the amount of consumers
of my magazine.
Environment Of Presentation
The following images display the
environment I did my pitch in, it also
displays the equipment I used to do
my pitch. In order to do my pitch I
used the software Prezi. I displayed
my pitch on the white board in the
center of the room in order so that
the audience can see it clearly. To
change slides on Prezi I used the
next button on the clicker I had
been provided with. The images
also display the camera and the
tripod that was used to film my
pitch. Finally the image of the iMac
computer displays the computer I
used to create my pitch on and also
what I used to project the pitch onto
the whiteboard.
Evidence Of Pitch
The following images display me delivering my pitch to an audience. My pitch
was filmed in order to allow me to watch it back and find the advantages and
disadvantages of my pitch.
Pitch
The following images display the feedback I received after presenting my
pitch
Witness Statements
The following images
demonstrate my witness
statements written by the
assessors of my magazine
pitch. They state that a
good thing in my pitch was
that I presented well which
evidenced my preparation.
They also state that my
pitch may have been
better if I had displayed my
double page spread better,
it stated flattening the
image
Pitch Feedback
Before presenting my pitch to an audience I created a survey on the website
survey monkey. Once I created the survey I sent a link to all the people who
would be viewing my presentation. The survey contained questions that
would review my pitch in order to allow me to improve next time.
Question One - What star rating would you give my magazine front covers?
1 Star being the worst, 5 Stars being the best
This questions results demonstrate that I created a
good front cover for my chosen magazine as upon
11 people answering my survey I achieved an
average rating of 4.5*. This is due to the fact that
54.55% rated my magazine front cover 5*, 36.36%
of people rated my magazine 4* and finally 9.09% of
people rated my magazine 3*. These facts
demonstrate my front cover being professional
because over half the people answering my survey
over half the people rated my magazine front cover
5*
Pitch Feedback (Continued)
Question Two - What do you think I can do to improve my pitch?
This question demonstrates written
answers I received back about how I
could improve my pitch. The main
answer to this question was to not
read of a script and make more eye
contact with the audience to keep
them involved. I believe this
demonstrates I conducted my pitch
well as this is the only fault the
audience found in my pitch.
Pitch Feedback (Continued)
Question Three - What could I do to improve my chosen magazine cover?
This question also required me to
obtain written feedback. The
feedback received demonstrates
there may still be features that I
need to change to improve my
magazine front cover. Some of the
improvements I intend to make
based upon the feed back is to
increase the size of the spotify logo,
fill up the dead space and
reconstruct the barcode found on
the bottom left of my magazine
Pitch Feedback (Continued)
Question Four - Did I cover everything in the mark scheme in my
presentation?
This question asked the
audience if I covered
everything from the mark
scheme in my pitch. I believe
looking at the feedback I
managed to cover everything
in the mark scheme in my
presentation. This is because
90.91% of people said that I
covered everything the mark
scheme.
Pitch Feedback (Continued)
Question Five - Were my magazine proposals detailed enough?
This question asked the
audience if my magazine
proposals were detailed
enough. I believe looking at
the feedback I managed to
create detailed proposals.
This is because 90.91% of
people said that my
magazines proposals were
detailed enough.
Pitch Feedback (Continued)
Question Six - What would you change about my magazine front cover?
This question once again allowed
the audience to write a written
response. The responses
recommended ways in which the
audience would create the front
cover. Following the responses
would allow me to create a front
cover which stands out to the
audience due to them being the
main idea behind the design of the
magazine. Some recommendations
included change the font style, less
drop shadow on the main image
and show more of the masthead
Pitch Feedback (Continued)
Question Seven – Did I target the right audience?
This question asked if I targeted
the correct audience when
creating my magazine. I believe
I targeted the correct audience
of 16-21 year old males as they
are the main supporters of the
hip hop/grime genre of music.
The feedback received from this
question demonstrates the
audience also believe I targeted
the correct audience as 100% of
people answered yes to the
question “did I target the right
audience”
Risk Assessment
The following two images display my photography consent forms. This
displays how I got consent from the people I have taken images of to use on
my front cover and inside the magazine. The form included an area for the
model in my images to sign there full name, date of birth, address and
contact details. The form also gives the location of the shoot and proof of
permission.
Spending Power
The spending power of the audience of my magazine is low. This is because
my target audience of 16-21 year old males are not very high ranked on the
socio economic needs scale. This means they have a lack of money to spend
on luxuries such as magazines. This is the reason I have chosen to set both my
magazines prices at £3.99. I also set this price because it beats my
competitors making people more likely to purchase my magazine as it is
cheaper.
My magazines spending power will be large after the first year. This is because
my magazine will create a good profit in the first year.
Subscriptions
Magazine subscriptions are where magazine companies
offer a fee to subscribe to their magazine. The fee that
is offered is cheaper than purchasing the magazines
regularly from the shops. There is often benefits of
subscribing to the magazine.
Another way I believe I can create an income for my
magazine is to provide a subscription option to the
magazine after the first year of is release. I would offer
a subscription to customers as it can save them money.
With no subscription the costs to buy all 12 magazines
from the year would be £47.88, if a person chose to
subscribe to my magazine instead the charge of my
subscription would be £35.99, this saves customers
£11.89 a year.
I intend to get around 100 magazine subscriptions in
the second year, this would generate a £3599 income
for my magazine.

Pitch Improvements
The following slide demonstrates the improvements I have made to my pitch. I have made these
improvements to make my pitch more detailed to ensure my audience understands what I wish
to do with my magazine in the near future. The slides I have added to my pitch include the
competitors of the magazine I have created, the spending power of the audience who reads my
magazine and finally information about how I intend to earn more money in the second year of
my magazines production due to me offering subscription options. I made these improvements
based on the feedback I received in my witness statements from the people who watch me
conduct my pitch.
Magazine Improvements
The following image displays the improvements I should make to my front
cover and double page spread of my chosen magazine MMH. In order to
improve my work based on the consumer feedback I have received I must
make some slight changes.
Front Cover Improvements
Before After
The following two
images display the
differences in my
front cover after
changing it based on
consumer feedback.
When changing the
front cover I reduced
the size of my
strapline “Make
Music Happen” in
order to make sure it
fits inside my
masthead. I have
made this
improvement as it
know makes it easier
for the consumer to
read the headlines
on the front cover of
the magazine
Double Page Spread Improvements
The following images demonstrate the changes I have made to my double page spread based on the
feedback I received on my witness statement. The audiences opinion was I should add the web address of
my magazines website to the bottom of each page of my magazine, I also made my pull quote larger to draw
more attention to the quote. Finally I added credits to the photographer and writer of the article

  • 4. Publisher Bauer Bauer Media Group are a publishing company based in Europe. They have a large headquarters in Hamburg, Germany and produce over 600 magazines, 400 digital products and 50 radio/TV stations around the world. They distribute there magazines in many different ways for example post. Bauer employ over 11,000 people across 17 different countries. The company was founded in 1875. The current CEO of Bauer is called Yvonne Bauer and she has an 85% share in the company. The revenue Bauer produce per year is around 2.4 billion euros. Q Magazine is one of Bauer Media Groups many products. The magazine was founded by Mark Ellen and David Hepworth in 1896 and they produced the first copy of the magazine in October of that year. Q is a music magazine that is published monthly. The circulation of the magazine is around 44,000. It is written in English language. The magazine links to the music industry by writing about new music, music compilations and live concert reviews. https://www.bauermedia.co.uk/ http://www.qthemusic.com/
  • 5. Market Position Bauer media is the largest media company in the UK. The evidence that supports this is the facts that have been released on Bauer’s website based on circulation from July – December 2016. The facts stated include “The World’s-biggest movie magazine Empire continues to dominate the film market” and “Iconic music bible MOJO boosts its circulation by 4.65%” Bauer also have two music magazines dominating the market with Q magazine having circulation figures of around 44,050 and Mojo magazine having around 70,445. These circulation figures beat the circulation figures of rival magazines such as NME produced by IPC media which has a circulation figure of only 15,000. This displays how Bauer have more magazines with a higher readership as their magazines have a higher circulation figure. http://www.bauermedia.co.uk/newsroom/press/bauer-media- july-december-2015-magazine-abcs
  • 6. Competitors IPC Media could be classed as Bauers biggest competitors as IPC Media own large magazines that focus on the same features that Bauers magazines focus on, for example Q (Bauer) and NME (IPC Media) both report on new artists. IPC Media also competes with Bauer by producing over 60 iconic media brands across many platforms like print, online and mobile. Some figures that relate to IPC Media are 26 million UK adults engage with the company in some way and 25 million visitors to the portfolio of websites IPC Media own per month. Wenner Media are not such a big competitor to Bauer. This is because they do not own such a large range of products as a company such a Bauer or IPC Media. Wenner Medias products include Rolling Stone music magazine, Men's Journal magazine and US Weekly magazine. These products bring in around 46 million readers each month. Wenners most famous product is their Rolling Stone magazine. Rolling Stone magazine reports on music which could link to Q magazine. Egmont compete with Bauer on a smaller scale. Although a large publishing company only a very small amount of the products produced compete with Bauer, for example We ❤ Pop. The magazine has circulation of 115,000. The magazine is targeted at teenage girls aged 11-17. Egmont also produce large amounts of tv and film. Mostly European and not English films but they have been involved with films such as The Hunger Games : Mocking Jay Part 2. http://www.timeincuk.com http://www.egmont.com https://corporate- wennermedia.icims.com/jobs/intro?hashed=-435772409 http://www.rollingstone.com
  • 7. Competitors (Continued) IPC Media produce NME magazine. NME is a magazine that has a genre very similar to Q magazine. The pop/rock magazine was founded in 1949 by Theodore Ingham. NME’s editor is called Mike Williams and has been with the company since June 2012. NME release a magazine on a weekly basis and have a circulation of around 15,000. NME is an English magazine and is produced in Southwark, London Wenner Media produce Rolling Stone magazine. The magazine was founded by Jann Wenner in 1967. Rolling Stone magazine is an American magazine and is produced in New York, USA. It is written in English and has a circulation of around 1,400,000. The main purpose of the magazine is to produce interviews, reviews and stories about the rock and roll genre of music Egmont produce We ❤ Pop. The magazine is produced in Denmark and is written in English. The magazine is released monthly. The main focus of the magazine is pop music but also includes information about celebrities, fashion and gossip. The target audience of the magazine is girls aged 11-17. The magazine puts exclusive backstage access, photos & interviews into an easy to read format. Each issue also comes with a premium free gift, exclusive reader offers and discounts. The magazine has a distribution of around 115,000
  • 8. Purpose Q magazines purpose is to mainly report on music and artists. The purpose can be clearly seen in the strapline of the magazine. Q magazines strapline is usually “The Worlds Greatest Music Magazine” in this issue the strapline is “The 10 Most Exciting People In Music Now.” This strapline could connote that Q magazine is targeting a younger audience as it talks about “Now” this links to a younger audience because young people tend to be more up to date with present day music.
  • 9. Genre The genre of Q is quite varied as they have previously reported on many different styles of artists and music. Mainly Q report on pop music and rock music. Evidence of this links to issues such as Plan B and Adele who are both pop artists. The other issues contain bands such as The Foo Fighters and artists such as Paul McCartney.
  • 10. As primary research I conducted a survey on the website SurveyMonkey. This question is taken from the survey and it demonstrates “what is your favourite genre of music?” the main answer I received back was “Hip Hop” with 70% of people putting it as there favorite genre. This relates to Q magazine as they focus on the genre rock. This may mean Q magazine may not attract as many readers as a magazine that focuses on the Hip Hop genre Genre (Continued)
  • 11. Form and Style The layout of Q magazine is very consistent. Every issue has the red background and white text Q masthead in the top left corner with the strapline “The Worlds Greatest Music Magazine” written in a black box underneath. There is then always a main image in the center of the page. The main headlines and the sub lines are then written around the main image. The colours often used are red, black and white. Inside the magazine the form and style is also consistent with features such as page numbers on every page and images that contain star appeal on most pages. The fonts used are always similar and are always simple in order to stick with Q’s professional and consistent form and style. It is important for Q to keep consistent in all their magazines in order to keep a professional feel and keep customers happy as they know they can expect quality from Q
  • 12. Target Audience According to socio-economic needs this magazine would relate to categories B – E These categories include middle class, lower middle class, skilled working class, working class and casual/lowest grade workers. Reasons behind this include category E (casual/lowest grade workers) contains young students aged 16 – 18 who are most likely to be the most interested in the magazine due to their large interest in music. The magazine stems to category B (middle class) because this category includes teachers that can have a large interest in music. In the Katz’s uses and gratifications theory I believe this magazine targets all the theories. This includes personal identification as the audience can relate to the interviews inside the magazine, inform and educate as the audience learn something reading the magazine and finally diversion as the audience escape from reality when reading.
  • 13. Target Audience (Continued) According to Hartley’s seven subjectivities Q magazine relates to the 3 main categories. These categories include age, gender and class. Evidence of this is Q’s audience is mostly 16 – 21 year olds, the magazine applies to both genders and also applies to around 5 different classes. Finally using Maslow’s hierarchy of needs it is clear Q magazine reaches out to each category on the list. This includes social climbers who believe reading the magazine will improve their status in society, care givers where the reader sympathizes with the situation of the celebrity in the magazine, explorers who are driven by social change and finally survivors who want to know if the person they are reading about is ok.
  • 14. Front Cover Deconstruction The colour of the magazine connotes that this particular issue could be to stand out to an older audience as Noel Gallagher (Main Image Artist) is an artist of a previous generation. Noel is also wearing similar colours in his picture which could link to the background This part of the magazine is attractive to everyone as it contains what else can be seen in the magazine. The extra titles are called cover lines. The cover lines are effective as Q can attract more readers as sometimes readers may not be interested in the main story in the magazine This is the main image. The image could connote the power and presence of Q magazine because of a full body image of Noel Gallagher with his arms crossed looking directly at the camera. The image could also connote that magazine is for everyday people because Noel is wearing everyday clothes, just because he is a celebrity he is no different This area includes Q magazines convergence, barcode, price and month of issue. This is needed in order to allow customers to know the price of the magazine and purchase the magazine. Also the convergence is important as it allows a customer to visit the Q website The Q masthead stands out to people in shops. The colour red connotes to hot which may mean Q magazine knows what is hot right now which attracts customers as they want to know about the newest music. The font of the Q is sophisticated so could connote to an older audience. The strapline of Q is “The worlds greatest music magazine” which can be seen on every issue. The word “greatest” shows that Q is a good music magazine because it can advertise that it is the “greatest” The main cover lines are important as readers then know the main story in the issue of the magazine. Important as people know what they are buying
  • 15. Content Q magazine contains different features every month of its release. This section would contain interviews with artists, reports on live concerts and also top people in music at the present time. There is also a section in the magazine that is written in every copy this includes, subscriptions, music based crosswords and the 10 commandments. The crosswords main use is to keep the audience engaged in the magazine, another feature produced monthly is Q mail this feature also engages readers as it allows them to write in and ask any questions they have.
  • 16. Double Page Spread Deconstruction Star Appeal : The use of Ed Sheeran attracts a male and female audience to the magazine as the style of Ed’s music is based on both genders. Also using Ed Sheeran is a good idea as he has become one of the biggest stars in a small amount of time and lots of people want to find out more about him and his life. When audiences see this they will be automatically engaged Pull Quote : The pull quote is a quote from the interview. This is used to attract readers because then they want to know why and how Ed is “bringing ginger back” Drop Capital : The drop capital is a big bold letter that is the first letter that comes from the first word in the letter. This drop capital is effective because the colour red stands out and the letter “I” connotes how Ed will be talking about himself and this is what readers will be reading the magazine for. Page Number : The page number is used to inform readers what page number they are on. This links to the contents page as it will tell readers where to go veer page numbers Stand First : The stand first is a short, captivating introduction to the interview so the reader will know what, who, why and when about the interview. Then they find out more when reading
  • 17. Website Annotations The stand out feature on Q magazines website is the large image of the latest issue of the magazine. This is good because it allows readers to see if they would be interested in purchasing the magazine from the comfort of there own home as it is online. The familiar logo of Q is the first thing that is visible on the website. This is so that visitors of the website can see they have come to the right place to find out all about Q Underneath the image of the latest issue there is a small paragraph explaining about the latest issue in more detail. Once again this is effective because it allow customers to be sure about purchasing the issue of the magazine This part of the website allows a visitor of the website to order a hard copy of the latest issue or a digital copy. The digital copy is a good idea due to the large amount of people using technology. It is available on platforms such as Apple Newsstand, Kindle Fire and Google Play. In order to do this the consumer would click on the red text and be redirected to a page where they can order their chosen format This feature allows consumers to click on a social media icon that will redirect a person to the specific website clicked on where Q will have a page to advertise their magazine. For example click on twitter and be taken to Q’s twitter page
  • 18. Website Annotations (Continued) This headline comes from the main story of the latest edition of Q. it is the first thing readers read on the web page which is smart advertising as then people have to purchase a copy to find more about the headline. The navigation tool on the website is filled with many options to keep visitors of the website on the site for longer periods of time as there is interesting subjects available to see. For example “Track Of The Day” On the right hand side there is an option to click that will re-direct users to a page where they can pay to subscribe to Q. For example a yearly subscription can be purchased. There is also many options to click on whilst on the home page of the website, once again this is in order to keep users on the site for longer. Ways of doing this are the playlist Q provide for people to listen to On the right hand side of the website there is a search option. This is where users can search the whole Q website for there desired topic they want to listen to or read
  • 19. Synergy 4,189 Subscribers 11,600 Followers 128,000 Followers 122,737 Likes The secondary research I have conducted was to see how many followers, likes and subscribers Q magazine have on their social networking accounts. The stats I found were •4,189 Subscribers on YouTube •11,600 Followers on Instagram •128,000 Followers on Twitter •122,737 Likes on Facebook These facts display that Q magazine have an ever increasing following on social networking. This being down to the fact technology is becoming used more and more everyday. This online following of around 260,000 people connotes to how Q magazine have made online copies of their magazine available . This means now customers can subscribe online to Q and read the magazine on any platform of choice. Some examples include the kindle and the iPad. I believe as Q understand they target a young audience releasing issues of the magazine has benefitted them as they are keeping themselves up to date with the youth of today
  • 20. Email Evidence Here I show evidence of emailing the 4 emails addresses I could find for people who work in Bauer. These people are •Cat Martin, Communications Director, Bauer Media •Jonny Silver , Communications Manager, Bauer Media •Genevieve Potter, Head of Internal Communications, Bauer Media •Sophie Ramm, Commercial Marketing Manager, Bauer Media I emailed the workers at Bauer in order to find out about the production process of Q magazine
  • 21. Email Replies These email replies display evidence that I did not get a reply that informed me about Q magazines production process. This means that I have had to visit a website in order to learn about the production process of a magazine.
  • 22. Production Process There are 9 stages in the production process of the magazine. Stage 1 – Date of Publication This is where the magazines publisher (Bauer) set a date of publication for the magazine. The date of publication is the date the publisher want the magazine to be released as a quality and finished product for the general public. Once this date has been chosen there is now a schedule to complete the magazine. Stage 2 - Managing the Schedule As Q magazine wants to remain a top magazine, Bauer need to successfully stick to the date of publication. The schedule should include time for mishaps so that if mishaps occur the magazine will still be released on time. Stage 3 - Editorial and Budgetary Decision This step is where the magazine’s editorial team begins assembling and deciding what topics will be covered in the magazine. After deciding the types of articles, topics, news stories, illustrations and photographs that will be used in the magazine, the team makes decisions of a budget and how they will stick to it. The team will look at the money that is available to them and the most efficient way to spend it towards the production of the magazine. http://hosbeg.com/the-magazine- production-process/
  • 23. Production Process (Continued) Stage 4 - Content Acquisition The content acquisition stage is the stage where the content will be gathered for a magazine. It is also at this stage that artwork and graphics are also worked on. The artwork includes illustrations and pictures that are going to be placed in the magazine. Graphics are the pictures or images that are designed with a computer program. Also at this stage research is made by journalists and reporters into the topics and events being covered. The research can be done via the use of the internet and news databases. Meetings are also arranged with interviewees Stage 5 – Sub Editing Sub editing focuses on quality control. This is the media organization sub-editors job; if there is no sub-editor. Quality control includes checking the accuracy of all facts in the articles, making sure that words are properly spelled, making sure that grammar and punctuation are used correctly, making sure that all articles follow the house-style and working on the page layout. Stage 6 – Page Layout A special team responsible for page layouts is called the layout staff. Their job is to typeset and layout the various pages that come together in the magazine. In performing this task, they use desktop computers to do this. It is at this stage that adverts from advertisers are placed into the content. http://hosbeg.com/the-magazine- production-process/
  • 24. Production Process (Continued) Stage 7 - Proofreading The next stage is the proofreading. The editorial department will print out a hardcopy of the magazine so they can read through to find and correct any mistakes in it. Any mistake that is spotted is corrected on the softcopy. The editorial team keeps proofreading until every member is satisfied that all mistakes have been corrected. Stage 8 – Sub Editing The soft copy of the entire magazine is sent to the printer which will print the magazine. The company first prints a few copies and sends them to the publication’s editor for checking once again. If the editor is satisfied with the printer’s proofs, then the green light is given to the printer for mass printing to commence. Stage 6 – Page Layout The last stage of the production process. The printing company, having finished with the printing of the magazines will package them neatly and send them to a warehouse. From the warehouse, the magazines are then distributed and then sold to the public. http://hosbeg.com/the-magazine- production-process/
  • 25. Retail Outlets The retail outlets that sell Q magazine include WHSmiths, Sainsbury’s and Tesco. These shops are local to most people and also are mostly large companies.
  • 26. Magazine Two : XXL Magazine (Townsquare Media) XXL Magazine Townsquare Media

  • 28. Market Position XXL Magazine, owned by Town Square Media Group, is one of the largest magazines in the world. This is because they have circulation figures of around 135,000, which even beats Q magazine produced by Bauer Media. XXL magazines position in the market is a male audience of around 70% with an age of around 27. In the UK XXL is the biggest grossing magazine. XXL magazine is top of the market globally beating second place Rolling stone magazine by around 6000 more copies being distributed http://www.ame ricasmedia.com/ mediakits/XXL%2 0MediaKit.pdf
  • 29. Some figures that relate to IPC Media are 26 million UK adults engage with the company in some way and 25 million visitors to the portfolio of websites IPC Media own per month. http://www.timeincuk.com Bauer Media Group are a publishing company based in Europe. The revenue Bauer produce per year is around 2.4 billion euros. https://www.bauermedia.co.uk/ http://www.qthemusic.com/ Wenner Media are not such a big competitor to Bauer. Rolling Stone magazine reports on music which could link to Q magazine. https://corporate- wennermedia.icims.com/jobs/intro?hashed=-435772409 http://www.rollingstone.com
  • 30. The main purpose of the magazine is to produce interviews, reviews and stories about the rock and roll genre of music https://corporate- wennermedia.icims.com/jobs/intro?hashed=-435772409 http://www.rollingstone.com Q is a music magazine that is published monthly. The circulation of the magazine is around 44,000. It is written in English language. The magazine links to the music industry by writing about new music, music compilations and live concert reviews. http://www.qthemusic.com/
  • 31. Purpose XXL magazines purpose is to mainly report on music and artists. The purpose can be clearly seen in the strapline of the magazine. XXL magazines strapline is “Hip Hop on a Higher Level” this highlights how XXL is about music as the word “Hip Hop” demonstrates a genre of music. This strapline could connote that XXL magazine is targeting everyone as “Hip Hop” has a large target audience. The word “Higher” connotes to people that XXL are the best as they are on a better level than other hip hop magazine. The strapline may be to reach out to a younger audience because young people tend to be more up to date with present day music.
  • 32. Genre The genre of XXL is largely based on a Rap, R&B and Hip Hop genre. XXL does not vary a large amount. Evidence of this links to issues such as Lil Wayne, Notorious Big and Nas. These artists all produce similar music that doesn't’t appeal to very young and elderly people.
  • 34. Form and Style The form and style of XXL magazine is very consistent. Evidence of this is the bright red XXL logo being in the top corner of every issue. The colour red could connote that XXL are trying to make their magazine stand out because red catches peoples eyes in retail stores. Also the font is always similar on XXL’s front page this is because people then can spot it easily and they know what they are buying. There is also always a main image on the front cover that is very clear and uses the technique of star appeal. Around the main image are the headlines and sub lines of the issue of the magazine. Inside the magazine the from and style continues as there is a content page on every issue and page numbers on every page. XXL doesn't’t always put a strapline on their magazine which changes the form and style.
  • 37. Front Cover Deconstruction The colour and layout of the magazine connotes a mysterious feeling as the dark colours and the way Jay-Z has his hood up reveals nothing about him so readers have to purchase an issue so they can read the secrets that are inside This part of the magazine is attractive to everyone as it contains what else can be seen in the magazine. The extra titles are called cover lines. The cover lines are effective as XXL can attract more readers as sometimes readers may not be interested in the main story in the magazine The close up main image links to the strapline of the magazine because people believe as Jay – Z is famous he is on a “higher” level then they are. This makes people want to read the magazine because people want to understand how to be on his level. The star appeal of the image will also attract Jay – Z fans as they can get an insight into his life reading the issue This area includes XXL magazines convergence, barcode, price and month of issue. This is needed in order to allow customers to know the price of the magazine and purchase the magazine. Also the convergence is important as it allows a customer to visit the XXL website The XXL masthead stands out. This is because the red colour connotes excitement. The size of the text also makes the magazine stand out because as the font is big people believe the magazine is big to. This means it would have the best information inside The strapline of XXL is “Hip-Hop on a higher level” which can not be seen on every issue. The word “higher” connotes the level that XXL is on. This increases readership because people believe reading the magazine will improve there social status. The main cover lines are important as readers then know the main story in the issue of the magazine. Important as people know what they are buying
  • 38. Content The content of XXL differs every month an issue is released. Unlike Q magazine they do not have an section of the magazine that is published every time an issue is released. XXL’s content includes interviews, backstage information and insights into artists lives. Every issue has a main story that can be seen by looking at the headline on the front of the magazine. The main image also links to the headline as it is always of the artist that will be the main story. The side stories that are also posted on the front of the magazine are listed on the contents page with a brief paragraph underneath explaining the story in more detail. The main story also returns on the contents page as there is once again an image of the artist that will be covered as the main story. There is also a pull quote from the main story on the content page. For example the issue that featured 50 Cent and Soulja Boy has an image of the both the artists on the content page with the pull quote “if there wasn't no 50 Cent, there would be no Soulja Boy”
  • 39. Double Page Spread Deconstruction Pull Quote : The pull quote is a quote from the interview. This is used to attract readers because then they want to know why B.G. is “starts a fourteen-year bid behind bars” Drop Capital : The drop capital is a big bold letter that is the first letter of the first word in the article. This drop capital is effective because the colour blue links to the pull quote. The way the letter “T” has an opaque look and covers some of the text from the article may connote to how B.G. will be behind bars. Page Number : The page number is used to inform readers what page number they are on. This links to the contents page as it will tell readers where to go veer page numbers Star Appeal : The use of B.G. attracts a male audience to the magazine as the style of B.G. music is based on males. Also using B.G. automatically engages his fans to the magazine Stand First : The stand first is a short, captivating introduction to the interview so the reader will know what, who, why and when about the interview. Then they find out more when reading
  • 40. Website Annotations The familiar logo of XXL is the first thing that is visible on the website. This is so that visitors of the website can see they have come to the right place to find out all about XXL This section of the website is where there are a list of stories what a visitor can click on and be re direct to anther web page where the story will be readable online. This increases XXL’s magazine readership online. There is also many options to click on whilst on the home page of the website, this is in order to keep users on the site for longer. Ways of doing this are the gallery XXL provide for people to look at On the right hand side of the website there is a search option. This is where users can search the whole XXL website for there desired topic they want to view
  • 41. Website Annotations (continued) The navigation tool on the website is filled with many options to keep visitors of the website on the site for longer periods of time as there is interesting subjects available to see. For example “Shop” where visitors can purchase XXL items. XXL magazines strapline is “Hip Hop on a Higher Level” is visible on the XXL website. The word “Higher” connotes to people that XXL are the best as they are on a better level than other hip hop magazine This part of the website allows a visitor of the website to order a hard copy of the latest issue or a digital copy. The digital copy is a good idea due to the large amount of people using technology. It is available on platforms such as Apple Newsstand, Kindle Fire and Google Play. In order to do this the consumer would click on the image and be redirected to a page where they can order their chosen format This feature allows consumers to click on a social media icon that will redirect a person to the specific website clicked on where XXL will have a page to advertise their magazine. For example click on Facebook and be taken to XXL’s Facebook page
  • 42. Synergy The secondary research I have conducted was to see how many followers, likes and subscribers XXL magazine have on their social networking accounts. The stats I found were •636,639 Subscribers on YouTube •763,000 Followers on Instagram •1.1 million Followers on Twitter •1,509,342 Likes on Facebook These facts display that XXL magazine have an ever increasing following on social networking. This being down to the fact technology is becoming used more and more everyday. This online following of around INSERT people connotes to how XXL magazine have made online copies of their magazine available . This means now customers can subscribe online to XXL and read the magazine on any platform of choice. Some examples include the kindle and the iPad. I believe as XXL understand they target a young audience releasing issues of the magazine has benefitted them as they are keeping themselves up to date with the youth of today 636,639 Subscribers 763,000 Followers 1.1 million Followers 1,509,342 Likes

  • 48. LO 1 Conclusion In LO1 I have investigated and research two different publishing companies and the music magazines they produce. The first was Bauer Media who produce Q magazine. The second was Townsquare media and XXL magazine. I first looked at the information behind the publishing companies. This included information about them, their market position and their competitors. I then went on to discuss further in depth about the magazine. This included the magazines purpose, genre and target audience. Later on I analyzed the inside and front cover of a magazine by deconstructing a front cover, contents page and a double page spread. I also deconstructed the magazines websites. Finally I looked at the production process of the magazines and the retail outlets they are sold at.

I chose this font as it looks similar to my magazine of inspiration, XXL Magazine, I intend to change the colour of the box to red and keep the white bold font
  • 54. Mood Board - Fusion
  • 55. Mood Board Conclusion - Fusion The use of this image was in order to display the kind of artist and genres of music. Chris Brown (Left) is a hip hop artist. This links to my summary of ideas as the decided genre of my first music magazine is hip hop. The image also links to fashion. I have included fashion in my magazine ideas because upon conducting a survey on the website https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/ (SurveyMonkey) the feed back I received for the question “what other information would you like to see included in a magazine” the most selected option was fashion. This connotes how I could gain an audiences attention by including the features they are most interested in inside the magazine. The use of this second image is to mainly focus on the music that will be featured inside my music magazine. The album “2014 Forest Hills Drive” by the artist J Cole is a hip hop album. This once again links to my summary of ideas because as stated the main genre of my music magazine (Fusion) is hip hop. The image also displays some kind of features that will be visible in my music magazine as the image is of an album cover. This links to how I will review albums in my music magazine.
  • 57. Mood Board Conclusion - MMH This image demonstrates the album cover for JME’s album “Integrity” I have used this image in my mood board as the artist JME is known for the grime industry. This is the kind of music I will include inside my magazine. This image demonstrates the artist Skepta, I have selected this image because not only is Skepta an artist who produces music that relates to the genre of grime. But he also is a fashion icon in the grime industry. I will be including fashion in my magazine due to the results of a survey I created on the website SurveyMonkey (https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk) when asking the question “What other information would you like to see included in a magazine” the highest receive answer was “Fashion” with a 65% answer rate.
  • 58. Inspiration Magazine : Fusion I have chosen this copy of XXL to be my inspiration magazine for my first magazine, Fusion. The reason I have chosen this magazine as inspiration is because I believe it is good at capturing the audiences eye. The first reason I believe it captures the eye is because the main image is a large headshot. This means that fans of Kendrick Lamar can see that he is the main story in the magazine without reading any text. This means that Lamar’s fans may be encouraged to buy the magazine. The headshot also slightly covers the XXL logo demonstrating to people who are not fans of Kendrick Lamar that he is a powerful artist because he is allowed to cover the logo of a popular brand. Secondly the magazine is eye catching because the background colours of the front page are different to the normal dull colours on music magazines. The colours may connote that the article about the artist inside is the most interesting available as the colours are interesting. The one section I will not be following of this magazine is the font style. I believe the text around the artist is not interesting enough to draw audiences to the stories inside the magazine
  • 59. What will I ‘repeat’ Steve Neale (1980) Magazine 1, Fusion The things I will repeat to make my first magazine, Fusion, look effective are the cover lines, the quote from the magazine interview with an artist, the barcode, an image of the artist inside my magazine and finally the colours of the magazine (pink and green) I have chosen to not repeat the font style of the main heading. This is because I believe it is boring and unattractive to the audience
  • 60. Inspiration Magazine : MMH I have chosen this magazine because as my second magazine of inspiration because I believe it will be easy to recreate. The simplicity behind the magazine is also effective because it captures an audiences eye better as there is less to look at which may distract the audience. This magazine also makes it clear who is the topic in the magazine as the title “TRAVIS SCOTT Rage Against The Machine” is clearly visible to people passing by. This means whilst on the shelves in the shops if a Travis Scott fan sees the magazine they are likely to buy it. If it wasn’t clear who the magazine was based on it may reduce sales. The pink background may connote that the magazine is not just targeted at a male audience, as stereotypically the hip hop/rap genre targets a young black male, it may also be targeted a the females interested in Travis Scott. I believe I should recreate this because it will attract more people to my magazine. In this issue I will also recreate how XXL use a red box for the logo because it makes it stand out.
  • 61. What will I ‘repeat’ Steve Neale (1980) Magazine 2, MMH The things I will repeat to make my first magazine, MMH, look effective are the cover lines, the small paragraph that explains what is inside the magazine, the barcode, the font used for the magazine headline, an image of the artist inside my magazine and finally the colours of the magazine (pink)
  • 62. Form and style The from and style of both of my magazines will be very similar. This means in my first music magazine, Fusion, I will include my logo on every page an will also include page numbers on every page. I will then carry this idea over into my second music magazine, MMH, and include my logo and page numbers on every page in the magazine. The inspiration behind this comes from issues of XXL magazine and issues of NME magazine doing this. As these two magazine brands are my magazines of inspiration I believe I should follow there style in order for magazine to be successful. The form and style I will design myself is my front cover of my magazines. For example different use of fonts, different style of logo and main image having a different layout. This is important as it demonstrates a difference which could connote to some readers of a magazine that it is something new and fresh to read.
  • 63. Target Audience Socio-economic Needs The categories from socio-economic needs I will intend to target are C1, C2, D and E. This includes the Lower Middle Class, Skilled Working Class, Working Class and Casual/Lowest Grade Workers. I have chosen these categories because I believe it targets a wider audience than attempting to target groups A and B (Upper Middle Class and Middle Class). This is because there is a very small number of people in these classes and often they do not involve themselves in the Hip Hop genre. There is a guarantee my magazine would be successful with other categories due to the success of other magazines such as NME and XXL. Katz Uses and Gratification Theory Inside my magazine I will attempt to use techniques that will attract people in all categories of Katz Uses and Gratification Theory. This includes Personal Identification, Personal Relationship, Inform and Educate and Diversion. To attract people from the Personal Identification category I will post stories in my magazine that the audiences can relate to. To Inform and Educate people I will post new stories about new facts to guarantee readers will learn something when reading my magazine. Finally I will make my magazine captivating so that readers can escape from reality when immersing in the text. This connotes to the Diversion category of Katz Theory Hartley’s Seven Subjectivities I will focus on the three main categories in Hartley’s Seven Subjectivities. These three categories are Age, Gender and Class. Age – 16 to 21 year olds. I will focus on this age category because these ages connote to the ages where my selected magazine genre, Hip Hop, is most popular. Gender – Male. I have selected a male target audience because readers can then relate themselves to the people inside the magazine as the majority of people inside the magazine will be of this gender. This connotes to the person identification category in Katz Uses And Gratifications Theory. Class – I will target a lower class as this connotes to intending to target categories C1, C2, D and E from Socio-economic Needs. This includes the Lower Middle Class, Skilled Working Class, Working Class and Casual/Lowest Grade Workers. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs I will intend to target every category in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs in my target audience so I can have a large amount of readers of my magazine. These categories include Social Climbers, Caregivers, Explorers and Survivors. The main two focus groups from Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs I will focus on are Caregivers and Survivors. This is because it easier to share information with them. To reach out to Survivors I will make sure readers know the person in the magazine is okay. I will then reach out to Caregivers by creating stories which they can sympathise about the situation.
  • 67. Hand Drawn Drafts - Conclusion The previous images display my hand drawn drafts for my double page spreads and my front cover of my first magazine, Fusion. Fusion Front Cover I have decided to design my front covers and double page spreads in the same way just with different colour schemes. This means I will chose my magazine front cover and double page spread based on the most effective colour scheme. The scheme I have chose to follow is the purple and green gradient for my front cover and my double page spread. Fusion Double Page Spread In order to make my magazine flow I have selected the purple and green gradient for my double page spread of my first magazine, Fusion. This is because it connotes to my front cover. I also believe these colour are eye catching and will draw the audiences attention.
  • 71. Hand Drawn Drafts - Conclusion The previous images display my hand drawn drafts for my double page spreads and my front cover of my second magazine, MMH. MMH Front Cover The front cover hand drawn drafts are the same design yet different colour schemes. This is because I felt the layout would be effective in attracting an audience. This meant I chose two different colour schemes to display in my hand drawn drafts. As I had already used the purple to green gradient for my first magazine, Fusion, I selected the pink to white gradient colour scheme for my second magazine MMH. MMH Double Page Spread Once again to make my magazine flow I chose the pink colour scheme for my magazines double page spread. This is a technique chosen in order to keep the audience interested whilst reading the magazine.

  • 84. LO2 Conclusion LO2 has allowed me to display the process of me beginning to create my magazine. This meant I began to gather resources and ideas I wish to place on and in my magazine. I started by brainstorming ideas onto a mind map which allowed me to see the ideas together. I then linked these ideas to come up with two magazine ideas. I summarized my ideas on a summary of ideas slide. Next I looked at fonts I intended to use on my magazine. I then created two mood boards, one for each magazine I am creating, these mood boards had images I wised to include on or inside my magazine. After this I came up with some magazines of inspiration which I will follow when creating my magazines, in order to copy some segments of the magazine I stated what I would repeat on a slide. Next I thought of the target audience of my magazines, I chose young men as the target audience as these are the people they may be interested in the music genre I selected for my magazine. Finally I moved on to designing my magazine. I drew hand drawn drafts for each magazine. This included a double page spread and a front cover. I created a hand drawn draft as it is a quick, cheap and simple way to get a rough idea my magazine will look presentable. Next I created a graphic layout as I was happy with the design of the hand drawn draft. I once again created a double page spread and front cover for each magazine. I used graphic layouts before using Photoshop to save time as looking at the graphic layout revealed to me that my magazines will look good digitally.

  • 101. Magazine Interview Moring A$SAP FENN, How are you? I’m fine thanks, what about you? I’m pretty good thanks for asking, How did the last concert from your “Money Making Tour” go last night? It was lit! Loads of crazy people We heard! Girls jumping up on stage trying to share the love with you Yeah…That’s how I like it Anyway, down to business. The new album “Jhezus” straight to number one, how does that make you feel? The support of the fans has been amazing, to get to number one in the first week is crazy. There are so many other albums that could of done it. Speaking of other albums, you knocked Meek Mills of the number one spot and we’ve heard there's been some beef on twitter Some artists are all about themselves, never give respect to new comers in the music business…if I didn't deserve number one Drake would never of took me on his tour to be his support act. We here at Fusion believe you deserve that number one spot! Thank you Now, more questions, is there any period in your life that has been inspiring on your music? So many moments. That’s what the albums about, my life! All the hurt and pain, all the happy and good times and especially the times with friends. But the track “Carvery in Spain” is one of the ones that really tell the story about some of my favorite times, I guess you guys will have to give it a listen to find out more. Interesting that you mentioned “Carvery in Spain” because a little bird has told us that It is your favorite song on the new album. Would you like to quote on that? It is my favorite track by a long way, you’re right, without reveling to much its just the memories it brings back, the lyrics speak to me and I just hope the people are out there now enjoying it just as much as I enjoyed making it Finally, we want to know what persuaded you to join the A$AP Mob? It wasn’t about what persuaded me, its about what persuaded them Expand on that, reveal it to us, what are your true feelings behind being a member? Excitement mainly, its an unreal feeling to be working with the people that gave me so much inspiration for my music. I remember featuring on A$AP Rocky’s track way back and thinking nothing of it, but when I got that text telling me to join the Mob and release an album I was running round naked cause I was so happy I had the guys from the Mobs support Were happy to hear that everything worked out well for you, you deserve it, thank you for speaking to us today! Thank you, I enjoyed it We enjoyed to, carry on making that great quality music and we at Fusion will be sure to come for a second interview That sounds great

  • 105. House Style Colour Scheme The colour scheme have decided to use for my second magazine is pink, white and black. I will use this kind of colour scheme on my double page spread and my front cover in my magazine. I will link the pink and white colour together by using a gradient Font Style I have selected several font styles that look similar to use on the front cover on MMH magazine. The first font style I have used on my magazine is for the masthead. This font was found on the website DaFont, it is called York White letter. To use this on my magazine I changed the colour of the surrounding box to red rather than black. Next I used the font Abadi MT Condensed Extra Bold to write all the text inside my magazine and also on the front cover as cover lines. Finally as the main headline of my magazine I have used the font Blackoak Std. I added and effect of a stroke to the text stand out on the page

  • 117. Step By Step Step One: When I began to make my magazine front cover I used my magazine of inspiration, hand drawn drafts and graphic layouts as inspiration. I used the paint brush tool with an opacity of 50% and made the brush soft. I then increased the size of the brush so the spread of the colour will be greater. I chose a soft brush in order to make the colours blend together well. In order to make the background look as much like my inspiration magazine as possible I used the eye drop tool on my magazine of inspiration background. Step Two: After creating the background I added my main image to my front cover. I used the quick selection tool to remove the background of the image. In order to make the image stand out against the background I added a stroke and a drop shadow to the image. I then added the logo of my magazine on a layer behind my main image. To create my logo I used the shape tool to create a red rectangular box for the text “MMH” to go inside. To add the text I used the text tool and used the “Calibri (Body)” font to create a bold designed font. In order to make my logo stand out I added a drop shadow effect to the red rectangle outlining the “MMH” title The fourth step to creating my front cover was to add my strapline “Make Music Happen” underneath the logo of my magazine. In order to add this I used the text tool and typed the the strapline underneath my logo in the same font I used in the logo of my magazine “Calibri (Body)”. I also placed this behind my main image.
  • 118. Step By Step (Continued) The fifth step in creating my magazine front cover was to add a barcode to my front cover. I did this by inserting a rectangle shape in white with the shape tool and placing the image of a barcode on top of this shape. I then added the price, £3.99, the social media account, @MMH_MAG (For Twitter and Instagram) and finally the social media logos. Next I added the puff promotion to the front of my magazine, 1 year free of Spotify, which would be available to win inside the magazine. I inserted the Spotify logo and curved the text “WIN WIN WIN” around it. The next step of creating my front cover was to use a text box to create my main headline of my magazine. I used the text tool and typed my heading “OMEGA LOCAL INVASION EP” in order to make this stand out I added a stroke in the colour black behind the text. I used the window character and reduced the size of the gaps between the text. Finally I tilted the text at an angle in order to make it more interesting for the audience to view The second to last step of creating my front cover was to add the left hand side cover lines. In order to do this I used the text tool and typed in the cover line. To make it interesting to the reader I changed the colour of the font from white to black halfway through the cover line. In order to keep my front cover consistent I used the “Calibri (Body)” font again and made it bold. In order to finish my magazine front cover I created the right hand side cover lines. Once again I used the “Calibri (Body)’ font to keep consistency and used the white and black text colours in order to keep my magazine interesting. I also used the the shape tool to create the red line which break up my cover lines. I added a plus sign that was an intricate design to keep my magazine interesting.

  • 125. Printing Quotes And Costs The image above demonstrates a rough estimate on how much it will cost to print and deliver my magazines ready for distribution to customers. The estimated total to print 15,000 copies of my magazine would be £8093 to £9712. This price is then increased to around £9000 as there is a £737 delivery charge https://print24.com/uk/product/magazines/
  • 126. Distribution To Retailer Costs After researching distribution to retailer costs I discovered there was no set fee in order to send out my magazine to retailers. This is partially because this is my first magazine.
  • 127. Advertising Revenue Advert Style Cost Half Page £2750 Full Page 13 £5000 Double Page Spread 4 £9000 Inside my magazine I have 21 pages of advertisements. This is based over 61 pages. 13 of my advertisements are full page and the other 4 advertisements are double page spread, adding up to 8 more pages. 13 full page advertisements creates £65,000 revenue for the business. 4 double page advertisements creates £36,000 in revenue for the business. This added together creates £101,000 in revenue for the company. This over a 12 month period generates £1,212,000 for the business. £5000 (Full Page Advert Cost) x 13 (Number Of Full Page Adverts) = £65,000 £9000 (Double Page Spread Advert Cost) x 4 (Number Of Double Page Spread Adverts) = £36,000 £65,000 (Money Raised From Full Page Adverts) + £36,000 (Money Raised From Double Page Spread Adverts) = £101,000 £101,000 (Total Money Raised Per Magazine) x 12 (Months In The Year) = £1,212,000
  • 128. Social Media Adverts Using social media to advertise my magazine will be extremely beneficial as it will not cost any further money to advertise. Often creating a social media account is free. For example Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Pages can be made on these social media websites for free and readers of the magazine can decide whether or not they want to follow or like the page to get regular updates about my magazine. Another free social media website I can use is YouTube. Although free to make account some time and money may need to be invested in creating videos and advertisements for the channel based around my magazine. YouTube is extremely useful because as people subscribe and watch videos based on my magazine it can generate revenue, not only from people watching the videos themselves but it will make people want to purchase my magazine.
  • 129. Overall Costs – Profit and Loss Breakdown Income Advertising Revenue £1,212,000 Sales £59,850 Total £1,271,850 Expenses Equipment £56,428 Staff £315,500 Printing £9000 Advertising £3,640 Total £384,568 Net Profit (Income – Expenses) £887,282 The following table demonstrates my profit a loss breakdown. This is where I can work out if my business has made a loss or profit in the first year. In order to find my net profit I took my expenses away from my income. This left me with a £887,282 profit.
  • 130. Legal and Ethical Issues When creating my magazine there are rules to which I and my magazine must follow. This is so there will be a lack of complaints to deal with when the magazine is released. This means that no harm or offence will be experienced from any of the magazines consumers. One of the main rules when creating magazines “Particular care must be taken to avoid causing offence on the grounds of race, religion, gender, sexuality, disability or age” One ethnicity issue my magazine may face is the heavy involvement of more black ethnicity artist than white ethnicity.
  • 131. Copyright © Copyright is the procedure where somebody obtains a legal right to any kind of item. This then protects the item from being copied by a third party assessors. Copyright can be used to protect many items such as magazines, music and images. For Example, Q magazine have copyright on all of the magazines they produce. Evidence of this can be seen on Q’s magazines website. The footer of the website states “©Bauer Consumer Media. All Rights Reserved“ This means that Bauer, Q magazines publisher, have set laws to protect their products. Looking at the statement “All Rights Reserved” this means nothing that Bauer media create can be copyrighted as it is all of their content. I will need to obtain copyright on my magazine in order to make sure all my products are safe from being stolen from any other people or companies. http://www.qthemusic.com
  • 132. Watermark I added the watermark to the front cover of my magazine in order to protect the image. This watermark protects the image as upon trying to edit the image the watermark would make this impossible. I needed to watermark this image because of copyright. Watermarking this image also means I am following the data protection act 1998 by keeping the image protected as stated in my photography consent form

The latest editors code of practice came into effect on 1st January 2016. • 135. Calendar Events I have chosen to release my magazine on the 2nd January 2017. This is because it is the start of a new week in the new year. I have also chosen to release my magazine on this day as there are no other calendar events schedule, such as public holidays, that may reduce the amount of consumers of my magazine.

  • 137. Environment Of Presentation The following images display the environment I did my pitch in, it also displays the equipment I used to do my pitch. In order to do my pitch I used the software Prezi. I displayed my pitch on the white board in the center of the room in order so that the audience can see it clearly. To change slides on Prezi I used the next button on the clicker I had been provided with. The images also display the camera and the tripod that was used to film my pitch. Finally the image of the iMac computer displays the computer I used to create my pitch on and also what I used to project the pitch onto the whiteboard.
  • 138. Evidence Of Pitch The following images display me delivering my pitch to an audience. My pitch was filmed in order to allow me to watch it back and find the advantages and disadvantages of my pitch.
  • 139. Pitch The following images display the feedback I received after presenting my pitch
  • 140.
  • 141. Witness Statements The following images demonstrate my witness statements written by the assessors of my magazine pitch. They state that a good thing in my pitch was that I presented well which evidenced my preparation. They also state that my pitch may have been better if I had displayed my double page spread better, it stated flattening the image
  • 142. Pitch Feedback Before presenting my pitch to an audience I created a survey on the website survey monkey. Once I created the survey I sent a link to all the people who would be viewing my presentation. The survey contained questions that would review my pitch in order to allow me to improve next time. Question One - What star rating would you give my magazine front covers? 1 Star being the worst, 5 Stars being the best This questions results demonstrate that I created a good front cover for my chosen magazine as upon 11 people answering my survey I achieved an average rating of 4.5*. This is due to the fact that 54.55% rated my magazine front cover 5*, 36.36% of people rated my magazine 4* and finally 9.09% of people rated my magazine 3*. These facts demonstrate my front cover being professional because over half the people answering my survey over half the people rated my magazine front cover 5*
  • 143. Pitch Feedback (Continued) Question Two - What do you think I can do to improve my pitch? This question demonstrates written answers I received back about how I could improve my pitch. The main answer to this question was to not read of a script and make more eye contact with the audience to keep them involved. I believe this demonstrates I conducted my pitch well as this is the only fault the audience found in my pitch.
  • 144. Pitch Feedback (Continued) Question Three - What could I do to improve my chosen magazine cover? This question also required me to obtain written feedback. The feedback received demonstrates there may still be features that I need to change to improve my magazine front cover. Some of the improvements I intend to make based upon the feed back is to increase the size of the spotify logo, fill up the dead space and reconstruct the barcode found on the bottom left of my magazine
  • 145. Pitch Feedback (Continued) Question Four - Did I cover everything in the mark scheme in my presentation? This question asked the audience if I covered everything from the mark scheme in my pitch. I believe looking at the feedback I managed to cover everything in the mark scheme in my presentation. This is because 90.91% of people said that I covered everything the mark scheme.
  • 146. Pitch Feedback (Continued) Question Five - Were my magazine proposals detailed enough? This question asked the audience if my magazine proposals were detailed enough. I believe looking at the feedback I managed to create detailed proposals. This is because 90.91% of people said that my magazines proposals were detailed enough.
  • 147. Pitch Feedback (Continued) Question Six - What would you change about my magazine front cover? This question once again allowed the audience to write a written response. The responses recommended ways in which the audience would create the front cover. Following the responses would allow me to create a front cover which stands out to the audience due to them being the main idea behind the design of the magazine. Some recommendations included change the font style, less drop shadow on the main image and show more of the masthead
  • 148. Pitch Feedback (Continued) Question Seven – Did I target the right audience? This question asked if I targeted the correct audience when creating my magazine. I believe I targeted the correct audience of 16-21 year old males as they are the main supporters of the hip hop/grime genre of music. The feedback received from this question demonstrates the audience also believe I targeted the correct audience as 100% of people answered yes to the question “did I target the right audience”
  • 149. Risk Assessment The following two images display my photography consent forms. This displays how I got consent from the people I have taken images of to use on my front cover and inside the magazine. The form included an area for the model in my images to sign there full name, date of birth, address and contact details. The form also gives the location of the shoot and proof of permission.
  • 150. Spending Power The spending power of the audience of my magazine is low. This is because my target audience of 16-21 year old males are not very high ranked on the socio economic needs scale. This means they have a lack of money to spend on luxuries such as magazines. This is the reason I have chosen to set both my magazines prices at £3.99. I also set this price because it beats my competitors making people more likely to purchase my magazine as it is cheaper. My magazines spending power will be large after the first year. This is because my magazine will create a good profit in the first year.
  • 151. Subscriptions Magazine subscriptions are where magazine companies offer a fee to subscribe to their magazine. The fee that is offered is cheaper than purchasing the magazines regularly from the shops. There is often benefits of subscribing to the magazine. Another way I believe I can create an income for my magazine is to provide a subscription option to the magazine after the first year of is release. I would offer a subscription to customers as it can save them money. With no subscription the costs to buy all 12 magazines from the year would be £47.88, if a person chose to subscribe to my magazine instead the charge of my subscription would be £35.99, this saves customers £11.89 a year. I intend to get around 100 magazine subscriptions in the second year, this would generate a £3599 income for my magazine.
  • 153. Pitch Improvements The following slide demonstrates the improvements I have made to my pitch. I have made these improvements to make my pitch more detailed to ensure my audience understands what I wish to do with my magazine in the near future. The slides I have added to my pitch include the competitors of the magazine I have created, the spending power of the audience who reads my magazine and finally information about how I intend to earn more money in the second year of my magazines production due to me offering subscription options. I made these improvements based on the feedback I received in my witness statements from the people who watch me conduct my pitch.
  • 154. Magazine Improvements The following image displays the improvements I should make to my front cover and double page spread of my chosen magazine MMH. In order to improve my work based on the consumer feedback I have received I must make some slight changes.
  • 155. Front Cover Improvements Before After The following two images display the differences in my front cover after changing it based on consumer feedback. When changing the front cover I reduced the size of my strapline “Make Music Happen” in order to make sure it fits inside my masthead. I have made this improvement as it know makes it easier for the consumer to read the headlines on the front cover of the magazine
  • 156. Double Page Spread Improvements The following images demonstrate the changes I have made to my double page spread based on the feedback I received on my witness statement. The audiences opinion was I should add the web address of my magazines website to the bottom of each page of my magazine, I also made my pull quote larger to draw more attention to the quote. Finally I added credits to the photographer and writer of the article Before After
