act and how the the media company run.
The white triangle could represent that Bauer is pure and fresh, which
could mean this Bauer spreading this new version on the modern day.
The blue box could represent the ocean
because the ocean is big, as Bauer, as
they are speeding their products around
the world and is a global company.
In addition, the box could represent
Bauer as they are a global company,
which mean the are well known around
and they won’t stop grow as a company.
The white triangle could also represent the world because Bauer is a global
company, this could mean as Bauer is growing and becoming more
successful, the world(which is the audience) is growing small as everyone
have brought a Bauer’s product, which mean Bauer’ success is making the
world smaller as Bauer is entering us into the new world of entertainment.

Purpose and Meaning
The denotation of the strapline line for Q
magazine is “The World’s Greatest Music
Magazine. This suggests that this magazine has an
eclectic mix of music for all generations to read as
this magazine is made with the best quality for the
reader. The use of the word “World's” convey that
the magazine is a success and is a global magazine.
This could also denote that the magazine,is so
popular that it is sold globally. The superlative
“greatest” suggests that the Q magazine is made
to a high quality, it is one of a kind and you can’t
get the same information about music is another
magazine.
The masthead of the magazine is eye-catching, simple and bold. The letter “Q” on the masthead
suggests that this is a mature magazine because of the front of the “Q”. The masthead is bold and
stands out. The red background is eye catching and bright, this could suggest that this is a powerful
magazine because the red symbolises power and this will give you the exclusive information and
you are able to explore different genres of music. In addition, the white contrasts with the red
background, making the white letters bold and easier on the eye for the target audience.
The main image of Amy Winehouse is on the cover of Q magazine. Her
facial expression is neutral, which could convey that this is the end of
her impact of music, a year after she died. This could bring out an
emotion from the audience as she died and therefore stopped creating
music. In addition, the audience can see her tattoos of the two red and
black hearts, the red could represent her love for music and the black
could represent her drug addiction and how her life ended so tragically .
The barcode, issue date and price,
will inform the audience of the
magazine’s price and the issue date
of the magazine.
The headline of the magazine is “exclusive
Amy Winehouse tribute CD” this means the
audience can read and listen to her best
song in her time alive like Rehab or Back and
Black.
The inside features in the red box, is
the exclusive of which articles will be
mentioned in the magazine, this show s
different artist s mentioned in the
magazine and how they attract
different age range sof audience like
Rizzle kicks and Maroon 5 for the
teenagers and Stewart Lee for adults.
Coverlines/Pull-quote is used to attract
the audience. Red and white have been
chosen as the colour theme for this issue
of the magazine. This could be because
the letters are more eye-catching for the
audience, which could contrast against
the dark, dull, grey.
The background of Amy Winehouse could be a white door, where
there is no light which make the door look grey. This could represent
her life ending and also the ending of her music. This could express an
emotion of sadness, loss of someone who have changed the music
industry forever by her voice. The door could represent a talented
young woman walking out of our lives as the alcohol and drug
addiction took over her life. On the other hand, this could convey that
the alcohol and the drugs entered her life and led to her death. The
door could represent the duality of her life, her love of music and
enjoyment of entertaining her fans and the darkness of her addictions
which happened behind closed doors. The main cover of the magazine is “Amy” in capital letters to
emphasise that it’s been a year since she died. This could
attract the audience to buy this magazine as she is still famous
and still well known for her music, even after she died and
people may want to know more about her life and her death.
The name “Amy” is in large white writing so this can contrast
the white and grey so the letter can be more eye catching for
the audience.
Purpose and Meaning
The banner of Q magazine stated “
Exclusive Amy Winehouse Tribute
CD” this you buy the magazine, as
this come with a free CD as Amy
Winehouse Tribute, as this could be a
collection of her best songs she have
ever made. The buzzword “Exclusive”
connote that this CD is made jus for Q
magazine and therefore you can’t buy
the tribute unless you buy the
magazine. This could also convey that
the CD is limited additions. Moreover,
there is a pug on the magazine as this
come with a free CD, this will make
people want to buy the magazines, as
their know they will be gain CD as well
as new information about music. This
will make the target audience feel that
their money was well spend on this
magazine.
On the magazine there is the anchorage
text, which stated “ New Revelation
About The Voice Of Our Time…And How
We Lost Her” this could that the audience
will find out more about Amy Winehouse
and interesting facts about her or her
music. This could also bring more
information about her death, the lead up
and the seriousness of drugs and alcohol
addiction and how she become addicted
to those substances.
On the magazine, there is a puff which
stated “if your CD is missing please tell
your Newsagent” as this is a warning for
the target audience that the CD may not be
included in the magazine and it is
important to tell the newsagents, where
you brought the magazine, to warn them if
all of the magazine don’t include with the
magazine and they could get you that CD.
There is no secondary
images on this magazine,
as the main focus of the
magazine is Amy
Winehouse as they are

Winehouse a year after her
death.
In addition, pug include a smaller free magazine for the music albums guide. This is important because
the target audience will feel like that they are benefits buying the magazine, as this come with a free
guide as the smaller magazine can them to explore different genre of music and also they find new
information about their favourite genre of music.
Double Page Spread Analysing
The drop capital is to attract the audience to read about Elle
Goulding’s albums and learn fun facts about her albums and
rumours about her songs. Also, it named the producers, the
release date, where the albums were recorded and tracks on
the drop capital.
The technical code of the double
page spread focuses on Ellie
Goulding . The photograph of Ellie
Goulding is taken with a medium
shot, as her hands are over her
headphone. This could suggest that
music is really important to her as in
the background, she is in the
recording studio planning one of
her many hits. Her face shows high
concentration, which implies that
she wants to make the best music
possible. She has chosen to wear
black clothing instead of bright
coloured clothing which suggests
she could be trying to rip off her
good girl image and become more
rebellious . This implies that as she is
changing, also her music will change.
On the left of the image there is a pull quote which is in bold
white capital letters. This is accompanied by a specific quote that
was included from the interview. The pull quote from Q “ Hear Me
Roar” conveys that we haven’t heard the best of Ellie Goulding
yet. In addition, this could suggest that she was never number
one on the music magazine in the past and is determined to
achieve that position now and she won’t be second best without a
fight, as she is the number one female artist for Q.
The stand first on the double page spread is below the pull quote as
her name is highlighted in yellow to ensure the she actually said that
to Q . It is also eye-catching to the audience so they can quickly read
her threat to the music industry as she will become a global artist. In
addition, the quote is in red with the rest of the interview text in
black. Also the front is bold in colour and eye-catching for the reader
who will be drawn to read this quote.
Having another drop capital
in pale yellow about the next albums of
other artists such as CeeLo Cool, Wilko
Johnson or Deadmaus, suggests that all of
these artists mentioned are her rivals in the
music industry. During the double page
spread the focus is on Ellie Goulding as the
public eye is on her as she is the up and
coming artists and her album will change her
clean image and also the audience will have
high expectations for this album because she
has put all of her energy and power into the
new albums. She has expressed some
emotive phrases that will keep the readers
wondering about her new attitude to her
music.
Contents Analysis
In the sub line of the
magazine these
summaries of the
artist, interviews and
also the page number
of the review, which is
called the Q Review,
suggest that writers
interview the artist
and what they have
done or write a review
of what they have
done.
On the right side of the
magazine the Q logo can be
found along with the issue
date of the magazine.
On the content page the page number
anchors the main picture of the artist and
directs the audience to read the story
about their favourite artists. In addition,
below the page number there is a
summary of what the artist has achieved
or facts about them so the audience can
understand them more as the person
than a celebrity.
On the main picture of U2
on the content page, they
a flash which stated
“Cover Story” this suggests
that they are the main
focus of this issue of Q,
therefore this will attract
the audience to read the
interview of one of the
most famous band in the
world.
The masthead of this issue of Q stated the name of
the content page, the logo of Q and the issue date.
This will inform the reader what page this is so they
can find different sections of the magazine they
want to read. For instance, if they want to read
about 50 Cent and his music and business. They can
refer to the content page. This Logo is a type of
branding advertisement to let the reader know that
they are reading Q magazine. The logo also refers to
the issue number of the magazine because this will
let the audience know if they have read the recent
issue of Q or not, so they can buy the newest Q
magazine if they don’t have the newest issue of Q.
In addition, some people collect magazines so the
collector can buy Q to add to their collection so that
they can prove that they have every single issue of
Q.
Genre
Q magazine
Q magazine has a variety of different genres of music.
Evidence of the eclectic music in the magazine is on their homepage where
there are exclusive images and songs of Paul McCartney in 1981, which
premieres a remix of his song Tug of War, which is rock and pop genre music.
Also, further down the homepage, there is an article about 50 Cents, who are
a modern hip hop music. Also in the magazine, there are different examples
of artists who all have a different genre of music such as Amy Winehouse the
year after she died, Cheryl Cole and David Bowie .
The magazine is supported by the demographics of the Q magazine. As all age
ranges do read the magazine because of the eclectic range of articles . The
highest percentage of people who read Q magazine is male between the ages
of 15-24 , as they would be interested in different generation of music, like U2
or David Bowie. So they can explore their music interest.

important stages of the
magazine’s production as
the editors of the magazine
have to chose between in-
house writer or the external

specific topic, so the
content of the magazine will
be decided. In addition, the
illustrations will also be
created, whilst the editor is
deciding about the in-house
writers versus the external
writers.
1) Date of
Publication
This step is to set a
date of the
publication. This is the
date that the
magazine must be
released to the
general public. Once
the date has been
decided, you can start
working on the
magazine and start to
plan what to do.

Production Processes

quality checks of the
magazine. This means
the magazine staff
will have to check if
all of the facts in the
magazine are all true,

the magazine, they
will start to print
mass copies of the
magazine

Production Processes
I have emailed the publisher about the production process of their music magazine.
The reason I have emailed the publisher is because the information given to me will
help me use the same production for my magazine as Q magazine. Q magazine has no
contacts on their official website or on their magazine, so this is why I have emailed
the publisher and not the magazine itself. However, Bauer have not responded to my
email and therefore I have no answer about the production process of Q magazine.
Format and Style
Format
The length of the magazine is 21.6cm whilst the width is 28.3cm .
You can download Q on the customers’ tablet and phone if they subscribe to Q. For 12 issues before buying another
subscription for the following year. The content of the music magazine is thicker than the other magazine, as this will
pack in more information about the music and the artists.
Language
The Strapline of Q is “The World’s Greatest Music Magazine "suggesting that they are a bold and confident magazine
which means the information will be bold and also give the audience confidence that they are paying for the better
information about music than other magazines like Mojo or Kerrang!.
The quote on the front cover of Q is “World Exclusive”, which means no one else in the world has the information that
Q has about U2, also that it is the first time U2 has released the information to the public, which means they must buy
the magazine to know more about U2.
On the editor’s letter, which is a single page spread, they addressing the reader by saying “Your new issue of Q is a
collection of stories about the value of taking your time”, this suggest that Q belong to everyone not to the publishing
company, Bauer Media Group. Moreover, this suggests that the audience is the part of Q and is just as important as
the music itself.
On the double page spread, it was an interviewed with Ellie Goulding, it stated that “it could shatter Goulding’s nice girl
image. This suggests that Goulding doesn’t want to be a pop star and wanted to be taken more seriously as an artist.
So by having an interview with Q, she is being rebellious and shattering her clean image, as she is growing in her music
and fame, which implies that she is an artist that will take over the music world.
Colour Scheme
The main house colour of Q is red as this is the colour of the logo on masthead. In addition, white is another house
colour as the letter Q is in white and also when there is a dark page in the magazine, they would use a white colour
font. Also, they would use a black colour font to be presented on each page.
However, on the front cover of the magazine in the October 2015 issue, they also use the colour yellow because
throughout the magazine there are text boxes on some pages that are yellow, which suggests that they feel yellow is a
bright colour that makes people feel good. In addition, they may use yellow in the magazine because they have an
exclusive interview with U2 as this is the biggest band in the world so Q use the colour yellow to attract the readers to
the magazine. Achieving an exclusive interview with U2 is a big scoop for the magazine as well as a huge selling point.
House Style
The house style of Q magazine is to repeat their mastheads throughout the magazine next to the page number. This is
a type of brand Identity, as they are always branding themselves on each page. Moreover, Q magazines always include
their house colours of red, white and black on each page. Moreover, throughout the music magazine, individual pages
of text are all the size for each box of text and all of the font is in the same style.
Form
Q is a type of music magazine. This mean Q
magazine is non- fiction, as this is based on facts
and interviews with the artists/bands
themselves. The frequency of Q magazine is
monthly and therefore Q cost £4.20.

Demographic
A Higher management, bankers, lawyers, doctors and
other professionals.
B Middle management, teachers, creative and media
people e.g. graphic designers etc.
C1 Office supervisors, junior managers, nurses,
specialist clerical staff-white collar.
C2 Skilled manual workers, plumbers, builders-blue
collar
D Semi-skilled and unskilled manual workers.
E Unemployed, students, pensioners, casual workers.
The target audience of my target audience by the demographic for Q magazine is E
and D. This is important because my target audience will student, which mean they
will be find what style of music they will like and up and coming artists as well as
old artists/bands. So by the demography chart, I can identify what my target
audience will be like and also why they will read Q magazine.
Psychographic
Mainstreamers SEEK SECURITY. Tend to be domestic, conformist, conventional, sentimental-favour value for
money family brands. The largest group. .
Aspirers SEEK STATUS. Materialistic, acquisitive, orientated to image and appearance, persona and
fashion. Typically younger people.
Succeeders SEEK CONTROL. Strong goal, confidence, work ethic and organisation. Typically higher
management and professionals.
Resigned SEEK SURVIVAL. Rigid and authoritarian values. Interested in past and tradition. Typically
older people.
Explorers SEEK DISCOVERY. Energy, individualism and experience. Values difference and adventure.
Typically a younger demographic (students).
Strugglers SEEK ESCAPE. Alienated and disorganised. Few resources beyond physical skills. Buy alcohol,
junk food, lottery tickets. Typically lower demographics.
Reformers SEEK ENLIGHTENMENT. Freedom of restrictions and personal growth. Social awareness and
independent judgment. Anti-materialistic but aware of good taste.
Psychographic
My target audience will be ‘Aspirers’ as they will
care more about their fashion and their image, so
they will read Q magazine for inspiration of what
style their favorite artists/bands are wearing in the
photos. In addition my target audience will be
‘Explorers” as they will be discovering new music
because of Q magazine. Also my target audience
will be ‘survivors’ they will be committed to by Q
magazine monthly.
Target audience
The target audience of Q is aimed at people between the ages 15-
24. However, more males read Q magazine than female as the
percentage of readership is 68.3 for males and 31.7% for females
between 15-24 is 35.3%. This suggests that more males between
15-24 read Q magazine. This could be because there is a different
eclectic mix of music, so this is why Q is so popular with different
people. Q magazine matches people’s different music styles, for
instance, people who may like 50 Cent’s style or Sam Smith.
However, some people may like the old style of music like U2 or
David Bowie, which the Q mention in the magazine. This music
magazine also helps people to explore their interest of music by
using different artist or genre of music, which is included in the
magazine.
By referring to the ‘Hartley’s 7 Subjectivities’ they would be
considering the age, gender, class, ethnicity, self-image, nationality
and family when analysing the reasons why different groups may
like the same thing. Q magazine appeals to the age range between
15-24 as they will most likely be in the social group of E, D and
maybe C2.
https://ncrafts.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/socio-economic-needs.png
https://brianinsua6055.wordpress.com/unit-13-planning-pitching-uk-print-
product/unit-13-lo1/
The readership of the socio-economic perspective is categorised in the
ABC1 profile in a percentage. The ABC1 profile for Q magazine is 70% ,
which is quite high. The demographic profile suggests that they are more
interested in the music than the other age range, therefore, maybe they
are interested in working in the music industry as this is the age when
people start to decide what they want to do or decide working for the
first time.
The psychographics looked at personality, values, opinions, attitudes,
interests, and lifestyles. Q magazine is aimed at the lower ABC1 profile
readership as this is aimed at 15-24 year olds , as this is a younger age
range on the socio-economic chart. As the magazine is cheap for a
monthly issue they are able to afford it and get the most for their money.
Target Audience
According to the Katz theory of ‘diversion’ the audience can escape from reality by reading the
music magazine because then they don’t have to think about their real life like work and do
something that they are interested in themselves by reading their favourite music magazine.
Furthermore, the audience can be ‘informed’ and ‘educated’ because they can learn more about
the artists/bands, the music industry.
By referring to the Maslow theory, the audience would be ‘survivors’ as this connotes they like
to know that the magazine will be there every month. They will gain the knowledge about the
music through the magazine. In addition, they would be ‘explorers’ as they like to know different
music information and also explore different genre of music as well.
According to the Psychographic theory they would be ‘explorers’ as they are searching for new
information about the music through the magazines and therefore they maybe interested in the
music industry. The ‘explorers’ would normally be the younger demographic like students or
young adults. ‘Reformers’ are also included in psychographic theory as now they have a new
sense of freedom and want to know what music they like and what music they don’t like and they
seek help within the music magazine. As now as ‘reformers’ they would start to be more socially
aware of information.

Uses and gratification theory (Blumler
and Katz 1974)
The term of “Diversion” is when someone is escaping from their life. So they are living through the pages of the magazine.
Another term is “Personal relationship” is when someone build up a relationship with some who they like which is well known in
the media. This process normally happen by social media such as Facebook and snap chat. This reason why they will build up the
bond with the famous person is for emotion and social support, as they may not be able to gain in their normally day to day life.
In addition the term “Personality” suggest that some people act different on social media rather than real life. This could be
because they want to be the person who they are on social media rather than being themselves. This will reflecting your identified
between the person on social media and the person in reality
Lastly, the term of “Surveillance” to gain information about the band and the artist as they want to know more about them. Also
this will educate them on the up and coming artist and band to they can express their opinion about them.
Contraction to the music magazine
The audience may read music magazine because to escape from their normal life as they could be dreaming of a life in the music
industry and therefore it will it is a means of escape to life out their dream in their mind. By reading a music magazine you could
build a personal relationship with the artist or the band by reading their interview or looking at exclusive picture of the artist or
band. In some music magazine, people are able to write their opinion on a concerts that they have been to.
The main reason why someone read a music magazine is because they want to gain knowledge about the artist, band or the
music industry and how it function. They will be able to use this in their real life as they can make their dream come true as they
will know all of the function of how to be a singer .
Elihu KatzJay Blumler
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
Buying a magazine isn’t every needs. As
people will put their basic supplies of
food or water and also their safety will
come first as well. Someone with money
will more likely to buy a music magazine
as they can afford the magazine and
don’t have to worry about he money to
buy the magazine.
Someone when buy a music magazine in
“love/belonging” as the person could of
form a relationship the music magazine
brand and therefore they have the need
to but every issue of the magazine. The
section “love/belonging “ would include
family and friendship.
Abraham Maslow
Stuart Hall (1980) and Katz
The Stuart hall (1980) their a different kind of readers when they read magazine. The term ‘dominant reading’ reveals
that the acceptation of the reader, prefer to read. Another term is ‘the negotiated reading’, this is when the reader
also prefer to read, however they also believe a little the codes. In addition, they will also reflects on their own
position in life and also reflect on their experience and also their interests. The last term that Stuart Hall use is the
‘the oppositional reading’ is when the don’t want to read. Moreover, this relate to the reader social position as this
make them oppositional to relate the dominate codes.
Katz theory of ‘diversion’ the audience can escape from reality by reading the music magazine because they don’t
have to think about their real life like work and do something that they are interest themselves by reading their
favourite music magazine. Furthermore, the audience can be ‘informed’ and ‘educated’ because they can learn more
about the artists/bands, the music industry.
The Stuart Hall (1980) relate with my target audience because they will be known as ‘dominant reading’ the they
chose to buy Q magazine not force and therefore they will believe what ever is written in the magazine because all of
the information in the magazine is accurate as most of the information comes from the artist in an interview. The
Katz theory relate to my garget audience because they will be ‘diversion’ because as students they may want to
escape their real life because therefore be too much work they need to be and therefore want to read something that
will relax them. However, if my target audience is interested in music they will be classed as ‘informed’ and
‘educated’.

Question 1
The set of results is presented
of the chart. This show the
target audience may be
females, however this is
opposite than Q magazine
readership. This suggests that I
have asked more females than
male, which could be a bit bias.
This could shows the gender
readership for my music
magazine as more females has
filled out mu music magazine
than males.
Question 2
The sets of results will
reveals the target audience
of the age range. The main
age range for the readership
is 14-16, as I have ask more
people between the 14-16
because I have ask more
people between the age
range. This is important
because my magazine can
targeted at the younger
target audience, so I can
created a magazine, which is
designed for that specific
target audience.
Question 3
This set of results can determine
the most popular genre for my
music magazine. The most
popular genre for my music
magazine is pop music. As, my
music magazine will have a
electric of genre for my music
magazine. Even so I haven't done
have R&B as one of the choice for
the question, someone choice
other and then mention R&B. this
means that I will mention R&B
artists in my magazine as well as
pop, rock and indies artists and
bands.
Question 4
All of my target audience reveal that
will be willing to buy a magazine
between £2-£3. this is important
because students will not have
enough money to buy a music
magazine over £3. However all
magazine who have a monthly
frequency is over £3 because it have
more contents in the magazine and
therefore its more expensive. So I
cannot meet with the target audience
request of a cheap monthly music
magazine because my magazine will
be made in a high quality. This will
inform me the price of my music
magazine
Question 5
This sets of results reveal that
most of my target audience
never brought a music
magazine. However the target
audience who do buy music
magazine, would mostly buy
their music magazine monthly.
Also there is an equal amount
of people who do buy the
magazines weekly and
fortnightly. This could inform
my the frequency of my music
magazine.
Question 6
The set of results from my target
audience reveals that they would
prefer to read an interview fro an artist
than another else. Equally, some of
my target audience will like to look at
pictures and advertisement in the
music magazine. As well as one of my
target audience will like to articles and
artist information. However, no one
would like to read about he music
awards. This is important their need
to be a main features in my magazine
and I also need to know what my
target audience enjoy to read. This
could inform me what I could feature
the most of my music magazine.
Question 7
The set of results will determine
how is the best way to market my
new music magazine. Most of my
target audience thought that social
media is the best way to market a
new magazine, as teenagers use
social media and therefore it will
be easier to advertise the a new
magazine. Therefore 75% of my
target audience decided that using
social media to promote my new
music magazine. However, no
thought that the word of the
mouth is not a good way to
advertise a new magazine, even so
in the past the word of mouth will
be the best way to advertise a
magazine. This tell me that way to
advertise my music magazine.
Question 8
Most of my target audience will
buy a music magazine because
a free gift, as they may seem
that they are gaining something
if they buy a magazine. Some
people may buy a magazine if
the free gift good enough and
not something bad. Only one
person will not buy a music
magazine because of a music
magazine. The information from
the chart tell me that the best
way for my music magazine to
be popular and eye catching is
to have a free gift.
Question 9
The results on the chart reveal
that the most popular free gift for
my target audience will be
concerts tickets discount voucher.
This could be because most of the
teenagers will prefer to go to a
concert and hear live music.
However some of the target
audience will like to get earphone
or headphone free in the
magazine so they can listen to
their music. Equally amount of
people will like to receive signed
autograph from the artist and
band and a CD. One person will
like to receive a free T- Shirt from
the magazine. The chart tell me
that all of these free gift would be
popular as a free gifts.
Question 10
By looking at the set of results, there
are more people who never
subscribed to the magazine than
have. This could seem like more
people go the the shop than
subscribed yearly to the magazine.
This is important because if you
subscribed to a magazine and then
go bored of the magazine, you can
not stop the magazine of coming
monthly and get you money back,
unlike if you don’t have a subscribe to
the magazine and buy the magazine
monthly, you can stop buying the
magazine anytime if they are bored
of the magazine. This tell me that
most of my target audience do not
subscribed to any magazines.
Primary Research
Primary research is when someone gather new
information and have been collected not going on online.
Examples of how someone receive the primary research
is by an questionnaires, survey monkey or in a focus
group by interview a group of people.
Advantages Disadvantages
It is easy to do like to create a
questionnaire.
For a larger survey it can take a lot of
time.
You have the freedom to to design the
primary research like questionnaires,
phone survey or face to face survey.
This can cost a lot of money if its on a
large scale.
It is cheap and quick foe a samples for
the survey.
It could be out of date by the time of the
research id finish.
You may receive information that you
may not want.
Primary Research
There is other ways to find information about the
music magazine to ask a range of people on the street.
I have done a online questionnaire and also a paper
base questionnaire as well. By asking random people
on the street, you can have a range of response that
could help your music magazine. For the Survey
Monkey you can chose who to send the questionnaire
to whilst asking people on the street they may answer
it or just walk away and therefore you have to ask all
different age range.
So asking people on the street you are involving the
general public to get their opinions about the music
magazine such as the price or the house style. Also
you ca see their facial expression when the question is
given to them, as you can tell if the questions are good
important question or if the question that is not
important to this investigation.
Evidence of Primary Research
This is the forms of
primary research as on
a word document I
have wrote out ten
question and then I
have applies the
questions on
SurveyMonkey so
people can answer my
questions.
Secondary Research
Secondary research is when the information you want already
been products, so other people can use the information to help
them. Examples of where you can find secondary research is the
internets, newspaper or in books.
Advantages Disadvantages
The information is easy to access. Might have information that is not
necessary for your research.
It is easy to find the information you
need.
There could be out of date information.
You can find different resources, which
can help you like historical documents.
Not all of the information you find on
the will accuracy unless you look
through books
There could have a low cost to
acquirement.
Also their could have not finish
information in the secondary research.
Evidence of Secondary Research
This is a form of Secondary
research on amazon because
a reader express their
opinion about the magazine
online, so that other
potential customers can
know whether they can buy
the magazine or not. Also the
customers reviews can judge
the magazine on its quality,
service and appearances.

Product Advertising & Marketing
Define
The definition of above the line appeals to the mass audience way of advertising and also a quicker way to reach to their
generalized target audience. The ways you can advertise products are on poster, television advertisement or mention in
newspaper, social media and online. One way that Q magazine advertise their brand is when their masthead is included as a
album front cover. I think this is a good way for a music magazine to advertises because the fan of the artist or band will see the
main image on the album will have the magazine logo, so the fan can refer the artists to the magazine and then start to read the
magazine as it will features similar genre of music.
The definition of below the line when target to the smaller specific target audience rather than the mass generalized audience.
Example of the below the line promotion is when companies will send a direct email you someone or a leaflet through a house
door. Example of a magazine is mot magazine when the advertise below the line is by sending email to their customer to promote
their product.
Guerrilla marketing and Viral marketing
The definition of Guerrilla marketing is when a company spend a little bit of money to advertise themselves not
a conventional way. This would include looking for the public attention in a memorable way or have high energy
what promotion their company. Some ways that companies will advertise themselves as the company KitKat
made a bench that look like an open KitKat wrap with chocolate in it.
The definition of Viral marketing a company will advertise themselves electronically such as typing a tweet or
posting a picture on Instagram. Most company have themselves on social media. Examples of viral marketing is
the John Lewis’ Christmas advert. The reason why this advert went viral is because its got over 1 million view.
The link to the Christmas advert is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuz2ILq4UeA.
Magazine Advertising
This is an example of Vogue
magazine adverting
themselves on a billboard.
This is why this is a type of
above the line adverting.
Music magazine wouldn’t
advertise in this way as they
would normally promote
themselves on the shelf at
shops.
Relationship Between The Magazine
And Audience
Q magazine has a cross media convergence through
social media. The social media outlet lets the audience
and the producer to become closer. This is called
prosumer so the audience, contact directly to the Q. In
addition, this social media help Q to advertise their

People can subscribe to Q magazine on their

When subscribing online the customer have

You are can subscribe to the paper base
magazine online over 50 different countries.
However, there is no evidence that Q
magazine come in different language.
By referring to this chart you can see the
circulations of Q magazine sale in 2014.
Bill Address detail
Music magazine don’t advertise
themselves above the line, as they
would normally, self promote
themselves on the self of the shop. This
is important because they wouldn’t
promote themselves because of the
artist/band on front or because it is a
well known brand of music magazine.
Shop like WHSmith or Sainsbury will sell
Q magazine.
The definition of distribution is a process that will market a product and also

Q magazine’s impact and effect on
the Audience.
The majority readership of Q magazine between the ages of 15- 24 and the most
popular gender who would buy Q is males rather than females. This would be depend
of the audiences’ social group. This is important because if everyone in the social but
Q magazine, therefore they would buy it because they not want to be left out of the
conversion if they are discussing Q. therefore, Q magazine had impacted someone life
style. Even so ages between the ages of 15-24 have the highest percentage that read
Q magazine, the editor of Q, Mark Ellen and David Hepworth actually meant to target
Q magazine at older target audience, as they felt that people was “ignoring a
generation of older music”. This could explain way the language in Q is mature and
also Q magazine features older generation artist. The theory hypodermic needle
explain that people will absorb information which they just read into their brain,
without challenging the information or want to ask any questions about the
information. This could link to some of Q target audience because every week they
buy the magazine without any complains, as they may think that Q magazine contain
the correct information. However, this could link to another theory ‘Strugglers’, as they
are struggling keep their quality of life is not good lifestyle health as they would buy
alcohol, junk food or lottery tickets and they would normally be lower demographics.
this is the term from the psychograph chart. However, Q magazine have a impact on
theses type of target audience because they will keep on buying Q magazine even so
they could spend the money more sensibly.
Representation; Ethical issue to
consider- UK teens Tribes
UK tribes are different categorise, alternative, mainstream, leading edge, urban
and aspirant that teenagers fit in. they will demined which categorise they are in
by their social and culture preferences.
For my music magazine, the target audience will fit in the categorise ‘mainstream’
as they want to keep updated with the latest music and the latest gossip about
their favourite artists and band . This is important because if they started talking
about the music magazine to other people, they will be promoting the magazine
to their friends. Therefore, their friends because it was recommend by their
friends will buy the magazine and their will be larger profit merge.
http://www.uktribes.com/
Ethical issue to consider- UK teens
Tribes
Q magazine wouldn’t fit into a teen tribe, as Q magazine is targeted at young
adult not at teenager.
If I have to put myself in a teen tribe, I would be a townie in the mainstream
section. The definition of a townie in the teen tribe is “Townies are as
Mainstream as you can get – high street fashion, pop chart music, Saturday
night TV and a night on the town. As the rest of the Tribal map is becoming
more fashion-forward and fast-moving, the Townies are still in the local
Weatherspoon or on the bus to college – they are likely to be friends with
Blingers and other Tribes, but prefer to go with the flow and don’t want to stand
out.” this is because I don’t mind what we do I go out with friends and also I don’t
mind which film we watch in the cinema. I do like to watch Saturday night TV and
my fashion are causal but also from the high street because of my causal fashion I
don’t stand out from the crowd. In addition, my friends and I are always in local
places instead of going to London.
http://www.uktribes.com/
Ethical issue to consider- the male
gaze
The definition of the male gaze ( Laura Mulvey- 1975) concepts is the
males' attitude toward the women’s appearance so that their product
will sale. It’s the tendency to show the world and women from a male
perspective.
The black panther is the male
version of a cat, as a panther is
a type pf predator and
therefore is will attract the
male to danger. Whilst the
female cat would be small and
fluffy
Also on the magazine,
Lilly Allen is topless and
can see her bare back.
This will attract the
attraction of men as she
is promoting sex because
she is topless.
Laura Mulvey
For Q magazine it will give a impression of male have to be
successful, rich and dress to impress. Therefore one of the
stereotypes of Q magazine is successful young men.
Another, stereotypes that Q magazine reveals that female
have to change their appearance in order to impress other
people. This is shown in Q magazine as female artist is shown
in a sexier ways. So this give the impression to female
audience that they have to dress sexier in order to impress
males.
The stereotypes of rap is that the are black, wear gold and also
is a gangster. They are also not educated well as they use word
such as ‘init’, smoke weed all day and have no respect for the
laws or society.
Stereotypes
The definition of a stereotypes is when you are put in a specific categorise because of their
gender, ager range, race or background. By this people will expect you to act in a specific way
or have a specific appearance.
Racism and Sexism
The definition of racism is the belief that some race are superior than other race. This mean that
they will be discriminate at other race because of this belief.
Magazine have to go through a process to check for any racism words or phrases before it is release
to the general public. This would be checked by the editor of the magazine, so that the Q magazine
wouldn’t receive any complained from the general public.
One magazine called Cosmopolitan that got caught with racism is when a black model wearing a
black lipstick which have a subheading of ‘R.I.P’ whilst a white model with a beery colour lipstick
have the subheading of ‘Hello, Gorgeous’. Also the rest of the model in the artist have the
subheading of ‘Hello, Gorgeous’ apart from the black model and Nicole Richie who is mixed race.
Some of the reader thought that this was racist because it ‘was suggesting that the black model
‘need to die’ and was only use to represent ‘dead’. Soon after the magazine did apologise for its
action and this act of racism
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/media/press/cosmopolitan-apologises-for-using-black-
models-to-illustrate-dead-looks-in-racist-beauty-feature-10153873.html
The definition of sexism when discriminate someone because of their gender and also prejudging
them because of their gender. This is normally against females and girls.
In an issue of Glamour magazine it have apologises afters phrase which was sexist in an article
about how to ‘make a man fall hard for you’. In the articles it use phrases such 'stock the fridge with
his favourite drinks‘ and 'make him a snack after sex‘. This is sexist as this is suggesting that the
women should serve men every needs in order for him to be in love with him.#
http://www.thedrum.com/news/2015/08/01/glamour-apologises-sexist-blog-how-make-man-fall-
hard-you
Q magazine is sexist as it is targeted at male audience with offensive images of women, so that it
can appeal to the male target audience. One of image shown a female artist topless with black
panther next to her.
The definition of the male gaze ( Laura Mulvey- 1975) concepts is the males' attitude toward the
women’s appearance so that their product will sale. It’s the tendency to show the world and
women from a male perspective.
Role Model
The role model for Q magazine is targeted
at young males.
Q magazine created an idea that young
male get to the top to be successful.
In Q magazine, the target audience will
copy behaviours from their role. This will
make the target to become determined
by this. This could make them ruthless and
don’t care who they are hurting in the
process of them becoming successful.
The young males personality would
become ruthless as their aim to be
successful such as their role models in Q
magazine and what they advertises. The
males could become cocky if they do
become successful.
Copyright and royalties
The definition of copyright is when a print, publish, film, music or something have a legal right or
exclusivity to a person or a company. This mean if anyone uses the material without permission,
then the person or the company have the legal right to sue them.
The definition of royalties is when some is getting pay when their material is shared. Such as a
song is getting played on the radio, the royalties will go to the artist who sung the song.
Royalties in magazine, song tilted in their magazine such as in the magazine hit
songwords, they have a images of Madonna and the title of the main story that
were features on the front cover is ‘bedtime story’. This is the same name as
one of their album. So Madonna would of got paid to allow the magazine to
features the album's name.
This is the copyright symbol. This is important because
if magazine use this symbol it means the picture or the
information is exclusive to them and therefore no one
can use it without their permission.
The advertising rate reveal how much
company would pay to advertise their
product within a magazine. This is important
because magazine will get pay to advertise
and therefore will make a profit.
Offensive material and censorship
Magazine would post offensive materials on the magazine to cause offensive to other people. By posting
offensive materials on their magazine, this means that the magazine will build up a reputation that will be use
offensive material. This will mostly likely be targeted at younger target 15-24, as they will think that magazine is
rebellious and therefore this could increase the sales.
The definition of censorship is when something offensive in a magazine, social media, internet, television have
been covered up or blurred out in order to not cause any offensive to the audience. This mean in some
magazine if they used a swear word then they will try to cover up the word by using beep censor
In 2012 at the Brit, their accepted speech were cut short and
therefore to put up her middle finger. This was shown on live
TV, so they had no way to block the middle finger. However,
when OK! magazine wrote a story about Adele’s middle finger
at the Brit, instead of should her middle finger. They covered
the middle finger with the OK!’s Masthead.
For the April 2010 issue of Q magazine, Lady Gaga was
posing topless on the front cover. This front cover was
too offensive as she were showing too much breast
that the United Stated have banned this issue of Q
magazine to be at their stores as it was too offensives
for them to have.
Privacy and public right to know
The definition of privacy is when someone is apart from
someone and in their own place or state.
Celebrities should be allow to have private life. This is
important because when they are out in public, they are
celebrities which mean they will get recognised in public and
therefore they won’t have have any privacy in public place.
However, they should have privacy at their homes with
friends and family, so that they can have a normal life and if
they have any children, then their children can have a normal
upbringing. In addition, they should be allowed to publicly
give any information about their life if they want to and
people should be allowed to leak information about them or
their family.
The definition of the public right is the belief that the public
should know or to be aware of someone’s personal life,
action with someone life or in the world.
Some people have the public right to know about celebrities
because they chose to be in the public eye. This is important
because their fans look up to them and therefore want all
about their life and their personal life. Celebrities is given the
press the permission to photograph them, so this help them
to keep up with the public appearances, which could help
them to get more exposure for themselves.

Evidence of complain against Bauer
Media Group
You can see that Tom Cruise sued the
Bauer Media Group for $50 million ,
as one of the Bauer Media Group’s
magazine Life & Style stated that
Tome Cruise has ‘abandoned’ and
also ‘cut all tie’ with his young
daughter Suri.
However, the California federal court
had over turned his claim, so his
didn’t win the $50 million .

This could be because the letters are more eye-catching for the audience, which could contrast against the dark, dull, grey. The background of Amy Winehouse could be a white door, where there is no light which make the door look grey. This could represent her life ending and also the ending of her music. This could express an emotion of sadness, loss of someone who have changed the music industry forever by her voice. The door could represent a talented young woman walking out of our lives as the alcohol and drug addiction took over her life. On the other hand, this could convey that the alcohol and the drugs entered her life and led to her death. The door could represent the duality of her life, her love of music and enjoyment of entertaining her fans and the darkness of her addictions which happened behind closed doors. The main cover of the magazine is “Amy” in capital letters to emphasise that it’s been a year since she died. This could attract the audience to buy this magazine as she is still famous and still well known for her music, even after she died and people may want to know more about her life and her death. • 21. Production Processes I have emailed the publisher about the production process of their music magazine. The reason I have emailed the publisher is because the information given to me will help me use the same production for my magazine as Q magazine. Q magazine has no contacts on their official website or on their magazine, so this is why I have emailed the publisher and not the magazine itself. However, Bauer have not responded to my email and therefore I have no answer about the production process of Q magazine.
  • 22. Format and Style Format The length of the magazine is 21.6cm whilst the width is 28.3cm . You can download Q on the customers’ tablet and phone if they subscribe to Q. For 12 issues before buying another subscription for the following year. The content of the music magazine is thicker than the other magazine, as this will pack in more information about the music and the artists. Language The Strapline of Q is “The World’s Greatest Music Magazine "suggesting that they are a bold and confident magazine which means the information will be bold and also give the audience confidence that they are paying for the better information about music than other magazines like Mojo or Kerrang!. The quote on the front cover of Q is “World Exclusive”, which means no one else in the world has the information that Q has about U2, also that it is the first time U2 has released the information to the public, which means they must buy the magazine to know more about U2. On the editor’s letter, which is a single page spread, they addressing the reader by saying “Your new issue of Q is a collection of stories about the value of taking your time”, this suggest that Q belong to everyone not to the publishing company, Bauer Media Group. Moreover, this suggests that the audience is the part of Q and is just as important as the music itself. On the double page spread, it was an interviewed with Ellie Goulding, it stated that “it could shatter Goulding’s nice girl image. This suggests that Goulding doesn’t want to be a pop star and wanted to be taken more seriously as an artist. So by having an interview with Q, she is being rebellious and shattering her clean image, as she is growing in her music and fame, which implies that she is an artist that will take over the music world. Colour Scheme The main house colour of Q is red as this is the colour of the logo on masthead. In addition, white is another house colour as the letter Q is in white and also when there is a dark page in the magazine, they would use a white colour font. Also, they would use a black colour font to be presented on each page. However, on the front cover of the magazine in the October 2015 issue, they also use the colour yellow because throughout the magazine there are text boxes on some pages that are yellow, which suggests that they feel yellow is a bright colour that makes people feel good. In addition, they may use yellow in the magazine because they have an exclusive interview with U2 as this is the biggest band in the world so Q use the colour yellow to attract the readers to the magazine. Achieving an exclusive interview with U2 is a big scoop for the magazine as well as a huge selling point. House Style The house style of Q magazine is to repeat their mastheads throughout the magazine next to the page number. This is a type of brand Identity, as they are always branding themselves on each page. Moreover, Q magazines always include their house colours of red, white and black on each page. Moreover, throughout the music magazine, individual pages of text are all the size for each box of text and all of the font is in the same style.
  • 23. Form Q is a type of music magazine. This mean Q magazine is non- fiction, as this is based on facts and interviews with the artists/bands themselves. The frequency of Q magazine is monthly and therefore Q cost £4.20.

  • 29. Target audience The target audience of Q is aimed at people between the ages 15- 24. However, more males read Q magazine than female as the percentage of readership is 68.3 for males and 31.7% for females between 15-24 is 35.3%. This suggests that more males between 15-24 read Q magazine. This could be because there is a different eclectic mix of music, so this is why Q is so popular with different people. Q magazine matches people’s different music styles, for instance, people who may like 50 Cent’s style or Sam Smith. However, some people may like the old style of music like U2 or David Bowie, which the Q mention in the magazine. This music magazine also helps people to explore their interest of music by using different artist or genre of music, which is included in the magazine. By referring to the ‘Hartley’s 7 Subjectivities’ they would be considering the age, gender, class, ethnicity, self-image, nationality and family when analysing the reasons why different groups may like the same thing. Q magazine appeals to the age range between 15-24 as they will most likely be in the social group of E, D and maybe C2. https://ncrafts.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/socio-economic-needs.png https://brianinsua6055.wordpress.com/unit-13-planning-pitching-uk-print- product/unit-13-lo1/ The readership of the socio-economic perspective is categorised in the ABC1 profile in a percentage. The psychographics looked at personality, values, opinions, attitudes, interests, and lifestyles. Q magazine is aimed at the lower ABC1 profile readership as this is aimed at 15-24 year olds , as this is a younger age range on the socio-economic chart. As the magazine is cheap for a monthly issue they are able to afford it and get the most for their money.
  • 30. Target Audience According to the Katz theory of ‘diversion’ the audience can escape from reality by reading the music magazine because then they don’t have to think about their real life like work and do something that they are interested in themselves by reading their favourite music magazine. Furthermore, the audience can be ‘informed’ and ‘educated’ because they can learn more about the artists/bands, the music industry. By referring to the Maslow theory, the audience would be ‘survivors’ as this connotes they like to know that the magazine will be there every month. They will gain the knowledge about the music through the magazine. In addition, they would be ‘explorers’ as they like to know different music information and also explore different genre of music as well. According to the Psychographic theory they would be ‘explorers’ as they are searching for new information about the music through the magazines and therefore they maybe interested in the music industry. The ‘explorers’ would normally be the younger demographic like students or young adults. ‘Reformers’ are also included in psychographic theory as now they have a new sense of freedom and want to know what music they like and what music they don’t like and they seek help within the music magazine. As now as ‘reformers’ they would start to be more socially aware of information. https://ncrafts.wordpress.com/ctec-level-3-introductory-diploma-in-media-candidates/unit-30-uk-media-publishing/
  • 31. Uses and gratification theory (Blumler and Katz 1974) The term of “Diversion” is when someone is escaping from their life. So they are living through the pages of the magazine. Another term is “Personal relationship” is when someone build up a relationship with some who they like which is well known in the media. This process normally happen by social media such as Facebook and snap chat. This reason why they will build up the bond with the famous person is for emotion and social support, as they may not be able to gain in their normally day to day life. In addition the term “Personality” suggest that some people act different on social media rather than real life. This could be because they want to be the person who they are on social media rather than being themselves. This will reflecting your identified between the person on social media and the person in reality Lastly, the term of “Surveillance” to gain information about the band and the artist as they want to know more about them. Also this will educate them on the up and coming artist and band to they can express their opinion about them. Contraction to the music magazine The audience may read music magazine because to escape from their normal life as they could be dreaming of a life in the music industry and therefore it will it is a means of escape to life out their dream in their mind. By reading a music magazine you could build a personal relationship with the artist or the band by reading their interview or looking at exclusive picture of the artist or band. In some music magazine, people are able to write their opinion on a concerts that they have been to. The main reason why someone read a music magazine is because they want to gain knowledge about the artist, band or the music industry and how it function. They will be able to use this in their real life as they can make their dream come true as they will know all of the function of how to be a singer . Elihu KatzJay Blumler
  • 32. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Buying a magazine isn’t every needs. As people will put their basic supplies of food or water and also their safety will come first as well. Someone with money will more likely to buy a music magazine as they can afford the magazine and don’t have to worry about he money to buy the magazine. Someone when buy a music magazine in “love/belonging” as the person could of form a relationship the music magazine brand and therefore they have the need to but every issue of the magazine. The section “love/belonging “ would include family and friendship. Abraham Maslow
  • 33. Stuart Hall (1980) and Katz The Stuart hall (1980) their a different kind of readers when they read magazine. The term ‘dominant reading’ reveals that the acceptation of the reader, prefer to read. Another term is ‘the negotiated reading’, this is when the reader also prefer to read, however they also believe a little the codes. In addition, they will also reflects on their own position in life and also reflect on their experience and also their interests. The last term that Stuart Hall use is the ‘the oppositional reading’ is when the don’t want to read. Moreover, this relate to the reader social position as this make them oppositional to relate the dominate codes. Katz theory of ‘diversion’ the audience can escape from reality by reading the music magazine because they don’t have to think about their real life like work and do something that they are interest themselves by reading their favourite music magazine. Furthermore, the audience can be ‘informed’ and ‘educated’ because they can learn more about the artists/bands, the music industry. The Stuart Hall (1980) relate with my target audience because they will be known as ‘dominant reading’ the they chose to buy Q magazine not force and therefore they will believe what ever is written in the magazine because all of the information in the magazine is accurate as most of the information comes from the artist in an interview. The Katz theory relate to my garget audience because they will be ‘diversion’ because as students they may want to escape their real life because therefore be too much work they need to be and therefore want to read something that will relax them. However, if my target audience is interested in music they will be classed as ‘informed’ and ‘educated’. Elihu Katz

So I cannot meet with the target audience request of a cheap monthly music magazine because my magazine will be made in a high quality. This will inform me the price of my music magazine

  • 45. Primary Research There is other ways to find information about the music magazine to ask a range of people on the street. I have done a online questionnaire and also a paper base questionnaire as well. By asking random people on the street, you can have a range of response that could help your music magazine. For the Survey Monkey you can chose who to send the questionnaire to whilst asking people on the street they may answer it or just walk away and therefore you have to ask all different age range. So asking people on the street you are involving the general public to get their opinions about the music magazine such as the price or the house style. Also you ca see their facial expression when the question is given to them, as you can tell if the questions are good important question or if the question that is not important to this investigation.

  • 51. Product Advertising & Marketing Define The definition of above the line appeals to the mass audience way of advertising and also a quicker way to reach to their generalized target audience. The ways you can advertise products are on poster, television advertisement or mention in newspaper, social media and online. One way that Q magazine advertise their brand is when their masthead is included as a album front cover. I think this is a good way for a music magazine to advertises because the fan of the artist or band will see the main image on the album will have the magazine logo, so the fan can refer the artists to the magazine and then start to read the magazine as it will features similar genre of music. The definition of below the line when target to the smaller specific target audience rather than the mass generalized audience. Example of the below the line promotion is when companies will send a direct email you someone or a leaflet through a house door. Example of a magazine is mot magazine when the advertise below the line is by sending email to their customer to promote their product.
  • 52. Guerrilla marketing and Viral marketing The definition of Guerrilla marketing is when a company spend a little bit of money to advertise themselves not a conventional way. This would include looking for the public attention in a memorable way or have high energy what promotion their company. Some ways that companies will advertise themselves as the company KitKat made a bench that look like an open KitKat wrap with chocolate in it. The definition of Viral marketing a company will advertise themselves electronically such as typing a tweet or posting a picture on Instagram. Most company have themselves on social media. Examples of viral marketing is the John Lewis’ Christmas advert. The reason why this advert went viral is because its got over 1 million view. The link to the Christmas advert is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuz2ILq4UeA.
  • 53. Magazine Advertising This is an example of Vogue magazine adverting themselves on a billboard. This is why this is a type of above the line adverting. Music magazine wouldn’t advertise in this way as they would normally promote themselves on the shelf at shops.

  • 58. Q magazine’s impact and effect on the Audience. The majority readership of Q magazine between the ages of 15- 24 and the most popular gender who would buy Q is males rather than females. This would be depend of the audiences’ social group. This is important because if everyone in the social but Q magazine, therefore they would buy it because they not want to be left out of the conversion if they are discussing Q. therefore, Q magazine had impacted someone life style. Even so ages between the ages of 15-24 have the highest percentage that read Q magazine, the editor of Q, Mark Ellen and David Hepworth actually meant to target Q magazine at older target audience, as they felt that people was “ignoring a generation of older music”. This could explain way the language in Q is mature and also Q magazine features older generation artist. The theory hypodermic needle explain that people will absorb information which they just read into their brain, without challenging the information or want to ask any questions about the information. This could link to some of Q target audience because every week they buy the magazine without any complains, as they may think that Q magazine contain the correct information. However, this could link to another theory ‘Strugglers’, as they are struggling keep their quality of life is not good lifestyle health as they would buy alcohol, junk food or lottery tickets and they would normally be lower demographics. this is the term from the psychograph chart. However, Q magazine have a impact on theses type of target audience because they will keep on buying Q magazine even so they could spend the money more sensibly.
  • 59. Representation; Ethical issue to consider- UK teens Tribes UK tribes are different categorise, alternative, mainstream, leading edge, urban and aspirant that teenagers fit in. they will demined which categorise they are in by their social and culture preferences. For my music magazine, the target audience will fit in the categorise ‘mainstream’ as they want to keep updated with the latest music and the latest gossip about their favourite artists and band . This is important because if they started talking about the music magazine to other people, they will be promoting the magazine to their friends. Therefore, their friends because it was recommend by their friends will buy the magazine and their will be larger profit merge. http://www.uktribes.com/
  • 60. Ethical issue to consider- UK teens Tribes Q magazine wouldn’t fit into a teen tribe, as Q magazine is targeted at young adult not at teenager. If I have to put myself in a teen tribe, I would be a townie in the mainstream section. The definition of a townie in the teen tribe is “Townies are as Mainstream as you can get – high street fashion, pop chart music, Saturday night TV and a night on the town. As the rest of the Tribal map is becoming more fashion-forward and fast-moving, the Townies are still in the local Weatherspoon or on the bus to college – they are likely to be friends with Blingers and other Tribes, but prefer to go with the flow and don’t want to stand out.” this is because I don’t mind what we do I go out with friends and also I don’t mind which film we watch in the cinema. I do like to watch Saturday night TV and my fashion are causal but also from the high street because of my causal fashion I don’t stand out from the crowd. In addition, my friends and I are always in local places instead of going to London. http://www.uktribes.com/
  • 61. Ethical issue to consider- the male gaze The definition of the male gaze ( Laura Mulvey- 1975) concepts is the males' attitude toward the women’s appearance so that their product will sale. It’s the tendency to show the world and women from a male perspective. The black panther is the male version of a cat, as a panther is a type pf predator and therefore is will attract the male to danger. Whilst the female cat would be small and fluffy Also on the magazine, Lilly Allen is topless and can see her bare back. This will attract the attraction of men as she is promoting sex because she is topless. Laura Mulvey
  • 62. For Q magazine it will give a impression of male have to be successful, rich and dress to impress. Therefore one of the stereotypes of Q magazine is successful young men. Another, stereotypes that Q magazine reveals that female have to change their appearance in order to impress other people. This is shown in Q magazine as female artist is shown in a sexier ways. So this give the impression to female audience that they have to dress sexier in order to impress males. The stereotypes of rap is that the are black, wear gold and also is a gangster. They are also not educated well as they use word such as ‘init’, smoke weed all day and have no respect for the laws or society. Stereotypes The definition of a stereotypes is when you are put in a specific categorise because of their gender, ager range, race or background. By this people will expect you to act in a specific way or have a specific appearance.
  • 63. Racism and Sexism The definition of racism is the belief that some race are superior than other race. This mean that they will be discriminate at other race because of this belief. Magazine have to go through a process to check for any racism words or phrases before it is release to the general public. This would be checked by the editor of the magazine, so that the Q magazine wouldn’t receive any complained from the general public. One magazine called Cosmopolitan that got caught with racism is when a black model wearing a black lipstick which have a subheading of ‘R.I.P’ whilst a white model with a beery colour lipstick have the subheading of ‘Hello, Gorgeous’. Also the rest of the model in the artist have the subheading of ‘Hello, Gorgeous’ apart from the black model and Nicole Richie who is mixed race. Some of the reader thought that this was racist because it ‘was suggesting that the black model ‘need to die’ and was only use to represent ‘dead’. Soon after the magazine did apologise for its action and this act of racism http://www.independent.co.uk/news/media/press/cosmopolitan-apologises-for-using-black- models-to-illustrate-dead-looks-in-racist-beauty-feature-10153873.html The definition of sexism when discriminate someone because of their gender and also prejudging them because of their gender. This is normally against females and girls. In an issue of Glamour magazine it have apologises afters phrase which was sexist in an article about how to ‘make a man fall hard for you’. In the articles it use phrases such 'stock the fridge with his favourite drinks‘ and 'make him a snack after sex‘. This is sexist as this is suggesting that the women should serve men every needs in order for him to be in love with him.# http://www.thedrum.com/news/2015/08/01/glamour-apologises-sexist-blog-how-make-man-fall- hard-you Q magazine is sexist as it is targeted at male audience with offensive images of women, so that it can appeal to the male target audience. One of image shown a female artist topless with black panther next to her.
