Q Magazine
Q magazine was founded in 1986 by Mark Ellen and David Hepworth. It’s a popular music magazine
published in the United Kingdom every month. In the early years, the magazine was sub-titled "The modern
guide to music and more’. Originally the magazine was called ‘cue’ this was then found out to be a massive
mistake as people thought it was a snooker related magazine and not music. Today its called Q .
Genre
This connotes that Q magazine covers a range amount of
genres as shown from this review on yahoo answers.

These are the people
that help operate
Bauer Media.
Brand Ideology/Ethos
 The denotation of Q magazines slogan is ‘UKS BIGGEST MUSIC MAGAZINE’.
 By Bauer using the verbal code ‘BIGGEST’ in massive capital letters across the strap
line ‘signifies’ (De Saussure) that not only do they sell a lot of copies but it is the
most popular and beats any competitors when it comes to music magazines. Q
magazine also includes the verbal code ‘UK’ in capital letters, this shows the
audience that when they are purchasing this magazine they know it’s the best
magazine they can get in the country so its most likely got the best information
inside.
 Q magazine has been sold 63,812 times and is still continuing to get bigger.
 The Q magazine which was originally called cue which was a huge mistake as there
potential customers did not notice it was a music magazine as it seemed to be a
snooker related.

that the magazine has a huge amount of
positive thoughts towards it.

Q magazine has a website and publishes issues of their magazine
monthly but it only shows the old issues so that people cant exploit
the system and get a free new magazine online.
Technological Convergence
Cont..
Q magazine also have a mobile app that can
be found on iTunes. This is a quick to use app
which you can purchase various issues of the
magazine at one time. The app also includes;
latest news, album reviews and exclusive
interviews which cannot be seen on the

music-magazine-news-
album/id550103031?mt=8
Q magazine also has a YouTube account that
has over 4,000 fans. This is a fairly low number
compared to the amount of readers Q gets
annually. This could be because the people that
are subscribed to the YouTube are die hard fans
to Q and want t find out more information from
their articles.

they are interested in that artist.

Main Headline.
The front cover is a picture of Ed
Sheeran who is an extremely
successful artist looking up at
something. This matches the
heading ‘Stories of the year. By those
who made them’ the picture matches
because Ed Sheeran is looking up
(almost like he is thinking about his
stories and dreams he’s told Q). The
red writing which stands out hugely
on the black background , this could
metaphorically mean that the artist
‘Ed sheeran’ stands out to all of the
rest of the music artist because of
how talented he is in music.
Masthead.
The letter ‘Q’ is in a classy/modern
font which makes it look smart and
different to other magazines.

the reader want to read on because
he has said an interesting point.

The Drop capital has been put
in place to show the reader
where to start reading. The font
of the H and the T being the
same font matches up with all
the other fonts throughout the
magazine.
Production Process
I have emailed some of the head staff at Bauer Media and I’m now waiting for a response.
Production Process Continued..
Date of publication; First thing to do is to set up a date of publication. This is when the magazine will be published to the public.
Managing the schedule; An extremely important step when it comes to the production. This is the schedule in which your
magazine will be published.
Editorial and budgetary decision; This involves the magazines editorial team assembling and deciding what topics will be
covered in the next issue of the magazine.
Content Acquisition; Important because without content there cannot be a magazine. This is the stage in which artwork and
graphics are worked on. These are the graphics that are used for the pictures and images that are designed with a computer
program.
Sub-Editing; Focuses on quality control, firstly it checks the accuracy of all facts in the articles, then it makes sure that words are
properly spelled and that the grammar and punctuation are used correctly. Lastly, they make sure that all articles follow the house
style and they begin working on the page layout.
Page Layout; Normally , there is a special team that are responsible for the page layouts. Their job is to type set and layout all the
pages that come together in the magazine
Proofreading; Spotting for any mistakes that have been made, any mistake that is spotted is quickly corrected on the DTP file.
File emailed to printer; Before the printing company prints hundreds or thousands of copies requested by the publication, the
company first prints a few copies and sends them to the publications editor for checking once again.
Distribution; This is the final stage of the process and it is when the printing company have finished with the printing of the
magazine and they will package them neatly and send them to the warehouse. From the warehouse, the magazines are then
distributed and then sold to the public.

Synergy
You can also get the next issue online as they have an app on the app store where
you can read it on your phone/tablet. This then creates a bigger target market for Q
magazine as potentially more customers could occur.
Throughout the whole magazine they advertise all the latest gigs and albums that are
coming out soon with a link showing what shops they are available in.
123,467 likes128,800 followers 4,202 subscribers
Q magazine uses lots of different social media, they use sites like; Facebook, twitter,
YouTube. They use this so that their readers know what kinds of things the magazine is going
to talk about in their next issue and this should then keep their readers intrigued.
Contents Page
Masthead; The masthead
is bold and simple which
makes the red and White
‘Q’ sign stand out which
should also boost sales in
shops.
Content of magazine; Sub-
headings and sublines The
page number and titles are
down the left side of the page.
Each title has a brief
description of what occurs on
the page.
Small Image; the big
image at the top of the
page signifies to the
reader with a number, with
this number they can see
what page their favourite
artist is on.
Main Image;
The main on the contents page is
what the reader will see first and it
and takes up most of the page. This
straight away gives the reader an
idea about what the magazine
consists of. The image then has a
number to the bottom left of it, that is
a page number and if you go to the
page you can see the article
Issue Number; This
number is what issue
of the magazine that it
is or what week the
magazine is on.
Form and Style
The form and style throughout the Q magazine maintains the same simple design. The magazine the
majority of the time will include a black background with white font or sometimes the other way around, a
red font for the use of the drop capitals so that it keeps within the theme but does stand out between the
usual basic colours of white and black. The font in all of the Q magazines are always the same, its just a
simple text. This might appeal to the reader because one, they will find it easy to read and two, with the
basic text the other basic features but the red and white different designs also makes the magazine
atheistically pleasing. Additionally, the front covers of the magazine also will normally have this design
and will always have a page number and web address so they can advertise more and keeps everything
the same . This then makes it become easy to recognise so potentially more customers may think about
buying the Q magazine.
Purpose
The purpose of this magazine is shown in the strap line ‘The 10
most exciting people in music right now’ by the artist Jay Z being
a close up shot on front of the magazine signifies that more
people will want to buy the magazine as he is a very successful.
Inside the music magazine it consists of exclusive interviews,
amazing photography that are made into a4 posters, it also
includes the latest information of all of the artists within the
genre of the magazine which is pop/rock. Their strapline is
‘discover great music’ , this connotations behind this strapline is
that Q magazine contains all the best information of the best
genre of music. This signifies that Q magazine will be the most
popular magazine because it contains everyone's favorites
magazine.

Demographics
Q magazine has a demographic of 66% ABC1
consumers and more males read the magazine
than females. Throughout the range of ages, the
most common age for the people who read this is
young and that is because they have the highest
percentage of 33.3% from age 15-24 years old. In
this age the spending power will be low as they will
most commonly be students which means they
wont have a lot of money to purchase. It is mainly
ABC1 because these people will have a fair bit of
money to purchase the magazine compared to the
C2DE because they will have jobs that pay a much
higher wage because they are managers and not
students or a low office worker. Also, they may
have a busy lifestyle consisting of various business
work but also going out.

Audience Theories
Gratifications and uses (Katz)
The theory is about how the use of media can be different for all different people and that the choices made
are their own and its what they want to do. When they do this, they are supposed to get gratification instead of
just watching a video or reading something. The Q magazine audience would be a variation of ‘inform and
educated’ as well as diverse reviews and other information that can make the audience learn something from
the magazine or they may be focused on what happens in the artist interviews.
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
This is the theory in which the audience can become motivated to achieve a specific need and when they have
achieved this they try to achieve the next activity, this ends up working in a pyramid shape. Q magazine would
more likely to be ‘explorers’ because they are people that become intrigued by social change. This is good for
them because Q magazine includes features of the calendar that shows what the next music artists or bands
will be doing next.
https://prezi.com/r4htgkotfaby/audience-theory-in-media-studies/
Audience Theories
Cont..
Hartley
John Hartley say there are 7 socially grouped categories when identifying the audience;
1. Self interests of the audience
2. Gender
3. Age Group
4. Class (Social Classes)
5. Ethnicity
6. Family
7. Nation
In Q magazine, the use of this audience theory for the magazine is, the self interests of the
reader would be the genre of music Q magazine consists of, the gender would mostly like to
be males (stereotypically). The age group would be from ages 16-24 years old, social class
would be working/middle as it’s a fairly high priced magazine at £5.99, the ethnicity would
stereotypically be a white male who lives in England as these are places where rock music is
most listened to.
https://prezi.com/r4htgkotfaby/audience-theory-in-media-studies/
Audience theories cont..
Socio-economics
This is based on the status of the person in what group
they are in because of what job they are in. This means
that the socio-economics for q magazine is; A, B and
C1 because they price of the magazine is fairly high.
This is proven as on the Bauer media website it says
that 66% of the audience are from; A,B or C1.
Physiographics
This is based on how people come across and what
they look and act like stereotypically. The readers for q
magazine would be quite strange and wear clothes that
are beige and brown with ripped jeans and boots.
http://www.investopedia.com/terms/s/social-economics.asphttp://study.com/academy/lesson/physiographic-regions-
definition-features-factors.html
Primary research
From my results I can see that 10/10 people that answered my
survey are students. This means that Q magazine is at the right
price, cheap, as the main target audience will be students who
don’t have a lot of money to spend on a magazine. This also
suggests that Q should base their magazine around what the
chosen age group would like (what's popular at the moment) this
then may boost sales for Q and their subscription could
eventually go above competitors Kerrang.
Most people who answered my survey read XXL
and that is a hip hop/rap magazine, this is different
to Q because they are a mixed genre with pop and
rock music which is not the most popular so
therefore wont get the most potential customers.
However, if Q magazine changed their genre to hip
hop/rap then it might receive more success because
more people will be interested.
Primary Research Cont..
From these results I can tell that Q magazine should sell their magazine from ÂŁ3.01-ÂŁ4.50.
This is because it is the most chosen answer and I will know that Q magazine will be popular
because there potentially more customers will choose it because of the price. At the moment
Q magazine is sold for ÂŁ3.99 an issue, this is a perfect price for Q to select as that is the
most chosen on my survey.
Secondary Research
Q magazine has 129.3k followers on twitter, which
connotes that it is a successful magazine across the
e media platform. However, its main competitor
Kerrang magazine is doing a lot better as it has 670k
followers showing it is extremely more successful
than Q and that Q should look to see if they can add
things to the magazine that might gain followers and
boost sales. Also on YouTube Q magazine has a
channel that has over 4,000 subscribers, these
people will be the strong fans that want extras from
the magazine through seeing the content on their
page. However, Q magazine lose out to Kerrang
again as they have over 7,000 subscribers. With this
research I can tell that Q magazine need to come up
with better ideas and content if they want to overtake
their competitors.

Above the line
The denotation above the line advertising is when promotions use mass media methods. This type of
promotion focuses on advertising to a large audience.
This picture shows guerilla marketing, this is because through a picture
of goldfish and a hedgehog it is showing the new park assist in the new
Volkswagen.

Distribution
In the uk (where Q is most popular) you can either; subscribe, digital copy or have a paper
copy to Q magazine, however this can also be available around the world (230 countries). If
some people subscribe for the paper copy then they can receive a copy before that issue
reaches the shelves in the shops as it will get delivered straight to your house address. Also
by subscribing to the magazine you can get a lot more offers and some issues for a cheaper
price, you cant get this from the shops because they wont do these offers. The most
common website people use to subscribe to the magazine is greatmagazines.com, tis is
because its reliable and easy to use. The magazine is published in English and doesn't’t
really get published in any other languages. Lastly, Q magazine is available in most shops
that stock books or supermarkets (for example; Whsmiths&Tescos).

Advertising (Costs and Social
Media Marketing)
Above the line; The denotation of above the line advertising is where mass media is used to
promote brands and reach out to the target consumers. These include conventional media as we
know it, television and radio advertising, print as well as internet.
Q magazine used below the line marketing through using social media to tell their fans/customers
what new information is in their new issues of the magazine or if there is an offer on in which they
can get the magazine for cheaper annually because of an offer code.
The costs to advertise in Q magazine is ÂŁ10,072 for a full page of your advert or the price for a half
page it is ÂŁ5, 036. The prices have gone up recently due to the fact that Q has become more
popular recently.

TV
Q magazine use music awards events for their promotion, this is a good use of promotion
because people will think that Q magazine will have the best information about the artists in
there because if it can host a TV awards show in which hundreds of thousands of viewers
tune in to watch it then it will obviously have the best information and latest news on all of
their favourite artists. Also, in 2014, q magazine released a TV advert dedicated to its new
special issue which had a huge amount of content to do with AcDc if you look at the advert
as well as information on Barack Obama and the sugababes. The advert is just simply a 30
second video of previews of the articles and their song lyrics.

Q magazines impact on the
audience
Q magazines impacts their audience by including the biggest artist in music in their magazines
hoping that repeat purchase will occur and also their audience attract other people and spread the
word about Q magazine. The magazine appeals to mostly the age group of 24-35, this is because it
includes a lot of mature content and also its music that suits the more older generation and so once
said to to others they might be interested in the content of the magazine and may subscribe or buy
the magazines. A theory called ‘hypodermic needle theory’ is that if they read an article that is in Q
that may not be true, they would believe it because there is no other information from any other
magazines to disagree with that article forcing them to believe it, causing an effect on the reader. Q
magazine released a David Bowie special issue for his death, this created an effect and impacted on
the audience because Q magazine pulled them into thinking that this issue was the only place you
could exclusive information on the artist. Furthermore, this then persuades the audience to buy more
issues of the magazine because they feel that Q are supplying the most exclusive information.
Relevant issues on
representation
Stereotype definition; a set idea that people that people have about what someone or something
is like.
(source; http://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/stereotype )
For Q magazine the stereotype would be a scruffy looking student (18-25 years old) who are white
males that’s dress sense is very casual and informal, for example, ripped jeans with a plain white
t-shirt and a pair of chelsea boots. Furthermore, the fact that most the women on the front cover of
Q magazine are dressed inappropriately it promotes ‘male gaze’ by Laura Mulvey, this is because
the male reader is most likely to look at the women dressed inappropriately and the women who's
had the photo shoot knows that her pictures are going to be looked at by these males. This is a
reason why males are more likely to purchase than females because of the photos, also, the
reader is more likely to be white because they stereotypically listen to rock and pop music more
than a black person.
Relevant issues on
representation continued..
The front cover of Q magazine denotes a picture of Damon
Alburn who was a artist in groups such as the Gorrilaz and
Blur. This is an example a stereotype because he looks like
someone who would read the magazine.
Male Gaze ‘Laura Mulvey’ this is because it
is Lady Gaga with no top on and only her
arm is covering to make it less inappropriate
and acceptable on shelves
Copyright
http://www.dictionary.com/browse/co
pyright
Definition; The exclusive and assignable legal right, given to the originator for a fixed number of
years, to print, publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic, or musical material.
The copyright law changed in 1998, this means that photographer or anyone else that has a major
involvement a piece of work now have their own rights for photocopying from a paer version and if a
book is reproduced then the person with major involves can claim because their rights have been
taken away
In Q magazine, there are a huge amount of copyright laws and even in adverts you can see the
copyright sign (which is normally a little c in the corner and the date it was made). For example, if an
image is used that isn't theirs.
Legal Issues
The link https:www.theguardian.com/media/2010/apr/19/bauer-media-freelance-contracts-rowis
about how Bauer Media wanted freelances who has work for them to sign a contract which would
take away their rights, this means that Bauer can use their work whenever they want without
referencing anyone so they cant lose money. On a couple of occasions Bauer have got into some
legal battles such as a couple of years ago Tom Cruise tried to sue Bauer for writing an article of
him abandoning his daughter, however, the magazine had done their research and saw that Tom
cruise didn't’t see his daughter for an extremely long time and therefore it was an unsuccessful
law suit for Tom Cruise.
Bauer Media have been involved in legal issues of their own with Tom Cruise, Q magazine has
never been involved in any legal issues. For example copyright.
Royalties
NLA is an newspaper licensing company which sell copying licenses for magazines and
newspapers. The term royalties is used when a magazine has included content which is
copyrighted and if someone else includes the information then they have to pay the
magazine from what they used it from. This means that NLA ensues that every publisher
gets their royalties. NLA is also used by Bauer Media and Q magazine as they are
subscribed to the company

Ethical Issues
Definition; A problem or situation that requires a person or organization to choose between
alternatives that must be evaluated as right (ethical) or wrong (unethical).
By producing magazines, companies have rules in place that they have to follow once it is
published and sold that it will not cause offence or harm to any of the customers. A rule n
particular is that care must be taken to avoid causing offence to grounds of
race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability or age. It will then be judged on its context,
audience, medium, product and its prevailing standards.

Complaint
A complaint, for example, could be when artists on the front cover of Q magazine are
wearing hardly any clothing or are topless. This could be bad for Q magazine because it
doesn’t put a nice message across about their magazines to the younger generation. I
also don’t think many parents would want to see their children looking at magazines like
these in a shop because even though they aren't revealing anything they still give off a
flirtatious image especially to the younger ages who might walk past the magazine on the
shelf in the shop.
Q magazine’s complaint
procedure
If you look on Q magazines website there is a tab which is all about complaints and
how you can complain. It takes you through how to complain and how long it would
be until your complaint gets read and also what to specifically include in your email
when you are writing it.

Regulatory Issues
This is content that is covered by copyright. This is content is protected by law and stops
anyone who will try to copy it. It also can be referred to ‘Intellectual property’ and means it
is divided into two different types; industrial property and copyright. Intellectual property
means that if any photographs or written work you have taken cannot be copied onto
your work. There is also a digital watermark available which will help protect your work
from getting copied because there will be a watermark in the way with your name on and
therefore the person who is looking at the work can see that it is not their work and can
see that it is yours because of the watermarked name. However there are some
negatives to this such as when protecting your IP you will have to pay a certain amount of
fees like a seven thousand pounds bill and it can take over 5 years to get and be able to
get used. Q magazine also state on their website for anyone to use their work they have
to be able to show a licence which means they can use it and that means that they have
copyrights on all of their work that Bauer media and Q magazine have to offer.

Regulatory issues cont.

Data Protection Act
This act is very important to have protected but the data protection act protects any information that is
personal held within the business. The rules of data protection are that it is used fair and completely,
this is extremely important for the company to be kept in a safe place because someone's life can
affect Bauer Media and Q magazine and all the workers that are included in the business should have
their own privacy within the company. Also, a point that should be made clear to everyone is health and
safety as everyone within the business needs to make sure that they know how to use all of the
equipment correctly so there is less chance of any harmful acts happening to them.

IPSO Editors Code of Practice
The editors code of practice are rules set up that newspapers and
magazines regulated by IPSO have agreed to follow. It contains 1-16
categories in which rules are implied that vary from whether or not the
articles accurate to serious stories such as reporting suicides or
children in sex cases. The newspaper needs to conform these laws in
order to get their newspaper published, this means following the rules
when covering a certain genre in your article, such as, if the
newspaper is writing up an article on children in sex cases, which
would normally be covered in The Mirror because they focus on the
serious genre. They have to follow the following rules which are; The
child's name should never be identified however the adult may have
their name used in the article and also care must be taken that
nothing in the report implies the relationship between the accused and
the child. If the newspaper follows these rules then their newspaper
can be published and sent to the public.
https://www.ipso.co.uk/editors-code-of-practice/
The 16 categories in
which are covered in
the editors code of
practice
Conclusion
In Conclusion, I have stated everything Q magazine has done in order to be
the successful magazine it is today. I have also covered the fact that they
are going to stay out of many legal issues due to the regulations now.

  • 4. The Publisher of Q http://www.bauermedia.co.uk/about http://www.qthemusic.com Bauer Media The denotation of the institution that publishes the magazine is BAUER. They publish magazine products, radio stations and TV stations which have been extremely successful. The Media group has a turnover of over ÂŁ2,000,000,000. It has made a new distribution strategy and shows its appreciation and passion for its people and brands. The brand uses the slogan ‘We think popular’, which connotes the Bauer Media Group’s perception of its own brand as a publisher of media that is popular and provides inspiration and motivation to its more than 11,000 employees in 16 countries over the world. Q Magazine Q magazine was founded in 1986 by Mark Ellen and David Hepworth. It’s a popular music magazine published in the United Kingdom every month. In the early years, the magazine was sub-titled "The modern guide to music and more’. Originally the magazine was called ‘cue’ this was then found out to be a massive mistake as people thought it was a snooker related magazine and not music. Today its called Q .
  • 5. Genre This connotes that Q magazine covers a range amount of genres as shown from this review on yahoo answers. https://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110503 001900AA0WwSm The genre for Q magazine is pop/rock music, the image on the left shows a famous pop musician/artist and on the right shows a rock musician/artist on the front page.
  • 6. Ownership Structure The Bauer brand covers a range of various brands from car magazines to music. The company was found by Ludolph Bauer in 1875. The Bauer media institution are the largest consumer company in the UK at publishing. The company is the sister company of H Bauer publishing and in 1953 their first magazine published was the angling times. http://www.bauermedia.co.uk/about/our-company Bauer media also own other media institutions such as radio stations KISS FM and Absolute radio which are 2 very popular radio stations used in the UK. They also own TV station 4 music and the box which are very popular music TV stations used on a day to basis in the UK.
  • 8. Brand Ideology/Ethos  The denotation of Q magazines slogan is ‘UKS BIGGEST MUSIC MAGAZINE’.  By Bauer using the verbal code ‘BIGGEST’ in massive capital letters across the strap line ‘signifies’ (De Saussure) that not only do they sell a lot of copies but it is the most popular and beats any competitors when it comes to music magazines. Q magazine also includes the verbal code ‘UK’ in capital letters, this shows the audience that when they are purchasing this magazine they know it’s the best magazine they can get in the country so its most likely got the best information inside.  Q magazine has been sold 63,812 times and is still continuing to get bigger.  The Q magazine which was originally called cue which was a huge mistake as there potential customers did not notice it was a music magazine as it seemed to be a snooker related. http://www.bauermedia.co.uk/brands www.pressgazette.co.uk/full-breakdown-of- magazine-sales-for-first-half-of-2012/
  • 9. Technological Convergence As you can see from the screen shot Q magazine are in synergy with apple music, facebook and twitter. The number of likes underneath facebook signifies to the audience that the magazine has a huge amount of positive thoughts towards it. http://www.qthemusic.com Q magazine has a website and publishes issues of their magazine monthly but it only shows the old issues so that people cant exploit the system and get a free new magazine online.
  • 10. Technological Convergence Cont.. Q magazine also have a mobile app that can be found on iTunes. This is a quick to use app which you can purchase various issues of the magazine at one time. The app also includes; latest news, album reviews and exclusive interviews which cannot be seen on the magazine. https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/q- music-magazine-news- album/id550103031?mt=8 Q magazine also has a YouTube account that has over 4,000 fans. This is a fairly low number compared to the amount of readers Q gets annually. This could be because the people that are subscribed to the YouTube are die hard fans to Q and want t find out more information from their articles. https://www.youtube.com/user/Q4music/vi deos?view=0&flow=grid&sort=p

  • 20. Form and Style The form and style throughout the Q magazine maintains the same simple design. The magazine the majority of the time will include a black background with white font or sometimes the other way around, a red font for the use of the drop capitals so that it keeps within the theme but does stand out between the usual basic colours of white and black. The font in all of the Q magazines are always the same, its just a simple text. This might appeal to the reader because one, they will find it easy to read and two, with the basic text the other basic features but the red and white different designs also makes the magazine atheistically pleasing. Additionally, the front covers of the magazine also will normally have this design and will always have a page number and web address so they can advertise more and keeps everything the same . This then makes it become easy to recognise so potentially more customers may think about buying the Q magazine.

  • 24. Demographics Q magazine has a demographic of 66% ABC1 consumers and more males read the magazine than females. Throughout the range of ages, the most common age for the people who read this is young and that is because they have the highest percentage of 33.3% from age 15-24 years old. In this age the spending power will be low as they will most commonly be students which means they wont have a lot of money to purchase. It is mainly ABC1 because these people will have a fair bit of money to purchase the magazine compared to the C2DE because they will have jobs that pay a much higher wage because they are managers and not students or a low office worker. Also, they may have a busy lifestyle consisting of various business work but also going out. ÂŁ5.99
  • 25. Audience Theories Gratifications and uses (Katz) The theory is about how the use of media can be different for all different people and that the choices made are their own and its what they want to do. When they do this, they are supposed to get gratification instead of just watching a video or reading something. The Q magazine audience would be a variation of ‘inform and educated’ as well as diverse reviews and other information that can make the audience learn something from the magazine or they may be focused on what happens in the artist interviews. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs This is the theory in which the audience can become motivated to achieve a specific need and when they have achieved this they try to achieve the next activity, this ends up working in a pyramid shape. Q magazine would more likely to be ‘explorers’ because they are people that become intrigued by social change. This is good for them because Q magazine includes features of the calendar that shows what the next music artists or bands will be doing next. https://prezi.com/r4htgkotfaby/audience-theory-in-media-studies/
  • 26. Audience Theories Cont.. Hartley John Hartley say there are 7 socially grouped categories when identifying the audience; 1. Self interests of the audience 2. Gender 3. Age Group 4. Class (Social Classes) 5. Ethnicity 6. Family 7. Nation In Q magazine, the use of this audience theory for the magazine is, the self interests of the reader would be the genre of music Q magazine consists of, the gender would mostly like to be males (stereotypically). The age group would be from ages 16-24 years old, social class would be working/middle as it’s a fairly high priced magazine at ÂŁ5.99, the ethnicity would stereotypically be a white male who lives in England as these are places where rock music is most listened to. https://prezi.com/r4htgkotfaby/audience-theory-in-media-studies/
  • 27. Audience theories cont.. Socio-economics This is based on the status of the person in what group they are in because of what job they are in. This means that the socio-economics for q magazine is; A, B and C1 because they price of the magazine is fairly high. This is proven as on the Bauer media website it says that 66% of the audience are from; A,B or C1. Physiographics This is based on how people come across and what they look and act like stereotypically. The readers for q magazine would be quite strange and wear clothes that are beige and brown with ripped jeans and boots. http://www.investopedia.com/terms/s/social-economics.asphttp://study.com/academy/lesson/physiographic-regions- definition-features-factors.html
  • 28. Primary research From my results I can see that 10/10 people that answered my survey are students. This means that Q magazine is at the right price, cheap, as the main target audience will be students who don’t have a lot of money to spend on a magazine. This also suggests that Q should base their magazine around what the chosen age group would like (what's popular at the moment) this then may boost sales for Q and their subscription could eventually go above competitors Kerrang. Most people who answered my survey read XXL and that is a hip hop/rap magazine, this is different to Q because they are a mixed genre with pop and rock music which is not the most popular so therefore wont get the most potential customers. However, if Q magazine changed their genre to hip hop/rap then it might receive more success because more people will be interested.
  • 29. Primary Research Cont.. From these results I can tell that Q magazine should sell their magazine from ÂŁ3.01-ÂŁ4.50. This is because it is the most chosen answer and I will know that Q magazine will be popular because there potentially more customers will choose it because of the price. At the moment Q magazine is sold for ÂŁ3.99 an issue, this is a perfect price for Q to select as that is the most chosen on my survey.
  • 30. Secondary Research Q magazine has 129.3k followers on twitter, which connotes that it is a successful magazine across the e media platform. However, its main competitor Kerrang magazine is doing a lot better as it has 670k followers showing it is extremely more successful than Q and that Q should look to see if they can add things to the magazine that might gain followers and boost sales. Also on YouTube Q magazine has a channel that has over 4,000 subscribers, these people will be the strong fans that want extras from the magazine through seeing the content on their page. However, Q magazine lose out to Kerrang again as they have over 7,000 subscribers. With this research I can tell that Q magazine need to come up with better ideas and content if they want to overtake their competitors. 128.9k followers 671k followers

If some people subscribe for the paper copy then they can receive a copy before that issue reaches the shelves in the shops as it will get delivered straight to your house address. Also by subscribing to the magazine you can get a lot more offers and some issues for a cheaper price, you cant get this from the shops because they wont do these offers. The most common website people use to subscribe to the magazine is greatmagazines.com, tis is because its reliable and easy to use. • 37. TV Q magazine use music awards events for their promotion, this is a good use of promotion because people will think that Q magazine will have the best information about the artists in there because if it can host a TV awards show in which hundreds of thousands of viewers tune in to watch it then it will obviously have the best information and latest news on all of their favourite artists. Also, in 2014, q magazine released a TV advert dedicated to its new special issue which had a huge amount of content to do with AcDc if you look at the advert as well as information on Barack Obama and the sugababes. The advert is just simply a 30 second video of previews of the articles and their song lyrics. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78UVEVzPeX4

  • 39. Q magazines impact on the audience Q magazines impacts their audience by including the biggest artist in music in their magazines hoping that repeat purchase will occur and also their audience attract other people and spread the word about Q magazine. The magazine appeals to mostly the age group of 24-35, this is because it includes a lot of mature content and also its music that suits the more older generation and so once said to to others they might be interested in the content of the magazine and may subscribe or buy the magazines. A theory called ‘hypodermic needle theory’ is that if they read an article that is in Q that may not be true, they would believe it because there is no other information from any other magazines to disagree with that article forcing them to believe it, causing an effect on the reader. Q magazine released a David Bowie special issue for his death, this created an effect and impacted on the audience because Q magazine pulled them into thinking that this issue was the only place you could exclusive information on the artist. Furthermore, this then persuades the audience to buy more issues of the magazine because they feel that Q are supplying the most exclusive information.
  • 40. Relevant issues on representation Stereotype definition; a set idea that people that people have about what someone or something is like. (source; http://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/stereotype ) For Q magazine the stereotype would be a scruffy looking student (18-25 years old) who are white males that’s dress sense is very casual and informal, for example, ripped jeans with a plain white t-shirt and a pair of chelsea boots. Furthermore, the fact that most the women on the front cover of Q magazine are dressed inappropriately it promotes ‘male gaze’ by Laura Mulvey, this is because the male reader is most likely to look at the women dressed inappropriately and the women who's had the photo shoot knows that her pictures are going to be looked at by these males. This is a reason why males are more likely to purchase than females because of the photos, also, the reader is more likely to be white because they stereotypically listen to rock and pop music more than a black person.
  • 41. Relevant issues on representation continued.. The front cover of Q magazine denotes a picture of Damon Alburn who was a artist in groups such as the Gorrilaz and Blur. This is an example a stereotype because he looks like someone who would read the magazine. Male Gaze ‘Laura Mulvey’ this is because it is Lady Gaga with no top on and only her arm is covering to make it less inappropriate and acceptable on shelves

The copyright law changed in 1998, this means that photographer or anyone else that has a major involvement a piece of work now have their own rights for photocopying from a paer version and if a book is reproduced then the person with major involves can claim because their rights have been taken away In Q magazine, there are a huge amount of copyright laws and even in adverts you can see the copyright sign (which is normally a little c in the corner and the date it was made). For example, if an image is used that isn't theirs.
  • 43. Legal Issues The link https:www.theguardian.com/media/2010/apr/19/bauer-media-freelance-contracts-rowis about how Bauer Media wanted freelances who has work for them to sign a contract which would take away their rights, this means that Bauer can use their work whenever they want without referencing anyone so they cant lose money. On a couple of occasions Bauer have got into some legal battles such as a couple of years ago Tom Cruise tried to sue Bauer for writing an article of him abandoning his daughter, however, the magazine had done their research and saw that Tom cruise didn't’t see his daughter for an extremely long time and therefore it was an unsuccessful law suit for Tom Cruise. Bauer Media have been involved in legal issues of their own with Tom Cruise, Q magazine has never been involved in any legal issues. For example copyright.

  • 46. Complaint A complaint, for example, could be when artists on the front cover of Q magazine are wearing hardly any clothing or are topless. This could be bad for Q magazine because it doesn’t put a nice message across about their magazines to the younger generation. I also don’t think many parents would want to see their children looking at magazines like these in a shop because even though they aren't revealing anything they still give off a flirtatious image especially to the younger ages who might walk past the magazine on the shelf in the shop.
  • 47. Q magazine’s complaint procedure If you look on Q magazines website there is a tab which is all about complaints and how you can complain. It takes you through how to complain and how long it would be until your complaint gets read and also what to specifically include in your email when you are writing it. http://www.bauermediacomplaints.co.uk
  • 48. Regulatory Issues This is content that is covered by copyright. This is content is protected by law and stops anyone who will try to copy it. It also can be referred to ‘Intellectual property’ and means it is divided into two different types; industrial property and copyright. Intellectual property means that if any photographs or written work you have taken cannot be copied onto your work. There is also a digital watermark available which will help protect your work from getting copied because there will be a watermark in the way with your name on and therefore the person who is looking at the work can see that it is not their work and can see that it is yours because of the watermarked name. However there are some negatives to this such as when protecting your IP you will have to pay a certain amount of fees like a seven thousand pounds bill and it can take over 5 years to get and be able to get used. Q magazine also state on their website for anyone to use their work they have to be able to show a licence which means they can use it and that means that they have copyrights on all of their work that Bauer media and Q magazine have to offer. http://www.nahc.org/advocacy-policy/regulatory- issues/

Data Protection Act This act is very important to have protected but the data protection act protects any information that is personal held within the business. The rules of data protection are that it is used fair and completely, this is extremely important for the company to be kept in a safe place because someone's life can affect Bauer Media and Q magazine and all the workers that are included in the business should have their own privacy within the company. Also, a point that should be made clear to everyone is health and safety as everyone within the business needs to make sure that they know how to use all of the equipment correctly so there is less chance of any harmful acts happening to them. http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/ict/legal/0datap rotectionactrev1.shtml

It contains 1-16 categories in which rules are implied that vary from whether or not the articles accurate to serious stories such as reporting suicides or children in sex cases. The newspaper needs to conform these laws in order to get their newspaper published, this means following the rules when covering a certain genre in your article, such as, if the newspaper is writing up an article on children in sex cases, which would normally be covered in The Mirror because they focus on the serious genre. They have to follow the following rules which are; The child's name should never be identified however the adult may have their name used in the article and also care must be taken that nothing in the report implies the relationship between the accused and the child. If the newspaper follows these rules then their newspaper can be published and sent to the public. https://www.ipso.co.uk/editors-code-of-practice/ The 16 categories in which are covered in the editors code of practice
